Oh, and before I close out this particular thread, here is ‘Mr. Anderson’, the deeply pastoral Protestant Anglican minister who reads the General Thanksgiving (in full) at the end of “A Night to Remember” (1958). What a moving conclusion the General Thanksgiving becomes to that marvelous movie. The prayer itself is almost never read or heard any longer because the church has become “Bedazzled” (1967) by the siren song of an over-estimation of the ‘Holy Eucharist'. It’s a “Desert Song” (1953 or 1929, take your pick), people, a sad, sad song that has diminished our preaching – terminally – and emptied our pews. I’ve watched it happen, over 50 years. I’ve actually seen it happen. M. and I well remember going to hear Theodore Parker Ferris in Trinity Church, Copley Square, Boston during the fall of 1970. The church was packed and you could barely get in. It was Morning Prayer (Holy Communion the first Sunday of the month). He preached, I guess the word is, electrifyingly. Certainly it felt heart to heart. I was only Nineteen (Paul Hardcastle, 1985). Only 19, for crying out loud. P.S. It is Jay Haug who reminded me of the scene at the end of “A Night to Remember”. 'Mr. Anderson’ was played by Philip Ray.
