"What other plans do you have today?" Ric asked, casting a curious glance in Nova's direction. He was carrying a bookbag that had some towels in it, a speaker, his phone charger, and the case for his sunglasses. In one of his hands, he holds a bag of breakfast sandwiches he had made for them and his iced french vanilla coffee. The beach was one of his favorite places to be, especially during a nice summer morning. He was happy when he was able to get Nova to come join him today, things always seemed that much better when she was around, she was his platonic soulmate after all.

"And I hope you like the sandwich," he says, giving a small grin. "I got the freshest Italian bread I could find, cut that up in half, added scrambled eggs, slices of avocado, tomato, some spinach leaves, and a bit of cheese. I brought some mayo packets too, in case you want to add some, some people like mayo on their breakfast sandwiches and I might be one of them." He come to a stop at a spot not too far from the shoreline, Ric looks around a bit, "I think we should be good to set up here. What do you think?"

X-Men Black: Juggernaut #1 “Stoppable”

X-Men Black: Juggernaut is the fourth of these one-shots, offering up a fairly compelling character study of Cain Marko. This one quite literally takes us inside the character, telling a tale of Juggernaut working through a mental landscape (or is it?), challenging himself to discover what’s going on and overcome the obstacles placed in his way.

It’s interesting how Robbie Thompson and Shawn Crystal lay out this story, as everything from the onset is unstable. Everything doesn’t quite line up for time period or appearances, and we get this through both art and dialogue, with interesting destruction through the setting and panel layouts, characters wearing old costumes, and the Juggernaut working out for himself several times that something is amiss.

The art from Crystal and Rico Renzi is particularly impressive, keeping us on our toes throughout the story with some impressive layouts, character designs, and panel transitions.

Unlike the other three one-shots so far, this one more securely places itself in continuity, as a follow-up to Juggernaut’s recent appearance in Thor, it changes a bit of his status quo, allowing him access to newfound power, and gives a loose thread for a possible next story for him searching for the remaining gems of Cyttorak.

It really does make me wonder what X-Men Black is leading to. Whether or not the lead stories are just a feature for the villains, or if the lead-in to the Uncanny X-Men relaunch is solely in the Apocalypse back-up. Either way, this is another entertaining, well-told single issue story and worth your time if you like the Juggernaut and/or good storytelling.

“Apocalypse - Degeneration Part Four”

The fourth chapter of the story acts as a turning point, with the devolved “Ape-ocalypse” serving as an experiment to his own once test subjects. It’s a very interesting role reversal, continuing to make me wonder whether or not Apocalypse will actually learn anything from this.

The art from Geraldo Borges and Rachelle Rosenberg continues to be a real selling point for this story, the detail on the simian creatures in particular.

I’m very interested to see how this concludes in the next chapter. Finding out where exactly this happens to be and how Apocalypse will extricate himself from the situation is something I really want to know. The entire creative have done a wonderful job at setting up this compelling story.

Quick Bits:

Black Panther vs. Deadpool #1 is an entertaining start to this limited series from Daniel Kibblesmith, Ricardo López Ortiz, Felipe Sobreiro, and Joe Sabino. Kibblesmith does a good job at capturing the humour and oddity of Deadpool’s voice and the art from López Ortiz and Sobreiro is perfect for the action.

Return of Wolverine #2 continues to be a lesson in how to jerk around readers with a long, drawn-out, and largely pointless “event”. This issue embraces some of the worst excesses of decompressed storytelling, spending this entire issue on a boat. I do not recommend throwing out $4+ on this or the previous issue, and I certainly do not recommend buying any of the preceding Hunt for Wolverine. It is a waste of your time and your money.

X-Men Red #9 brings us closer to the end and a final confrontation with Cassandra Nova as Jean does her best to rescue Rachel from Nova’s clutches. This is another great issue from Tom Taylor, full of humour and interesting character moments. Joining Taylor, Rain Beredo, and Cory Petit for the line art is Rogê Antônio, whose style meshes well with previous artists Mahmud Asrar and Carmen Carnero.
