              Despite knowing it was Theo’s day off and that his girlfriend would actually be home today,   Kareem still stopped by the White Oleander to pick some flowers and bring home since the witch also knew how much Theo liked having fresh flowers adorning her place. He wanted to keep her wishes alive while she was spending some time at his apartment. Give it a little touch of her own, too. 

He first spotted the reaper by the dying lilies and even though he had apparently bumped into some of these creatures since the borders of Portum had allowed them in, it didn’t make it easy for the witch to accept that there was not only one, but two reapers surrounding his girlfriend’s workplace.

“So…” He approached the curly-haired creature, hands innocently clasped behind his back. "Rumor has it you’re the one who likes dying flowers. Any specific reason as to why?"

Kareem would have stayed home that morning, but something stirred him awake and kicked out of the house. A feeling, he called. So, here he was, standing in line for his first cup of coffee of the day and it seemed like he wasn't the only one. "Shouldn't you be heading home by now, beautiful?" He asked Mari, hoping the witch didn't mind the pet name that in any way, came in a derogatory way and by now, she would've know that. "If it had been a long night, that is." He added, to let her know that he indeed had paid attention to what she'd said. "Just an early start for me. If you let me walk you home, I'll add something tasty to munch on while we go. How's that?"

with  a  faint  jingle  of  the  bell  announcing  her  arrival,  marisela  pushed  open  the  door  to  hallowed  grounds.  she  was  tired  –  dead  tired,  really  –  but  she  was  certain  it  was  nothing  a  strong  cup  of  coffee  couldn’t  fix.  marisela  had  worked  all  night,  the  end  of  her  shift  coming  with  the  daylight,  and  she  practically  dragged  herself  to  portum’s  favorite  coffee  shop.  she  just  wanted  a  little cafecito  before  trudging  home  to  rest.  the  smells  wafting  through  the  air  were  promising,  to  say  the  least.  marisela  glanced  over  the  menu,  trying  to  muster  the  energy  to  make  a  decision,  but  her  eyes  were  blurring  making  it  a  near  impossible  task.  slightly  defeated,  marisela  sighed  and  stepped  up  to  the  counter  to  make  her  order,  one  hand  rubbing  at  her  temple.  ��something  strong,  please.  the  strongest  you’ve  got,”  she  said  to  the  barista,  giving  them  a  tired  but  grateful  smile.  marisela  paid  for  her  order  and  stepped  aside  to  wait  for  her  name  to  be  called.  she  caught  someone’s  gaze,  and  felt  slightly  obligated  to  engage  in  some  small  talk.  “long  night  too,  or  just  an  early  start?”  maybe  small  talk  would  keep  her  awake  long  enough  until  the  caffeine  kicked  in.

Although Kareem really liked being a professor, there were some days that he wished he didn't have any responsibilities or didn't answer to anyone but himself. The young apprentice that kept blowing up his phone by sending several e-mails with the most off-topic questions about a paper had made Kareem turn his phone off for the evening.

"Hey, Rob." He said to his favorite barista as he noticed her by the bar at the old haunt. "What are you having tonight?" He then motioned to one of the bartenders and ordered Robin a second round, then one whisky sour for himself. "How are things?"

WEEK 9 - Wrap Up

ELECTION EDITION

Yes, I know. Politics and football don't mix. And yes, I wish the Presidential election's in this country were as fun and entertaining as the Reese Witherspoon/Matthew Broaderick film "Election", but they are not. Nevertheless, this is a big week for our country. No matter who you vote for or what your belief's are - it's good to remember we are all American's who love football. Let's go!

FUNK GUY vs TREE HUGGERS

This one was the "too close to call" game. It spurred a flurry of chatter on the text thread and apparently really upset the Funk Guy...as he lost maybe because of a field goal? I must be honest and tell you that I didn't watch this one very close but from looking at the line ups if I were going to blame anyone I would say Cole Kmet who put up 0 points for Dana. Scott as usual found a great defense to play and took home the win. Sorry Dana. Maybe focus on your Strategery moving forward.

TuPADRE vs TRADE WITH ME

Look at Brett. Pushing Gully out the way. Gully showed up this week and put up 114 points but Brett is like...doesn't matter I will put up 126 and take the win. It looks to me like he has Smith-Njigba to thank for the big win. Gully has now lost 2 in a row and might be on a downward trend. Nice win Brett!

LONG LEFT BALLERS vs LANAKILA

C'mon man! What the hell is going on with Bebo. This can't be possible. No one is this bad. Not trying to take anything away from Cliff. He will probably take high point after tonight so congrats on that but 1-8. It's just sad. Sad like an old man who should have retired decades ago still trying to do the job like he's young and ambitious. You know what i am talking about? Not a joke! Ah, anyway -you know the thing.

HOWARD vs MR AWESOME

Yeah...Rob Howard is probably the Frank Underwood of this league. He runs the show. Finds a way to win. And will shoot at his neighbors to get what he wants, as seen in the draft order video. This week he was up against Gabe Scott...and although he didn't grab the high point again this week - he did grab the win...easily. Just like Frank would. Nice win Rob.

MOOSES ON THE LOOSES vs THE HUNT FOR BROCKTOBER

And here we come to the "what the hell is going to happen game of the week". Mitch goes into MNF with 85.10 points facing Kyle with 81.42. Kyle with Kareem Hunt still to play and Mitch with the gift I gave him earlier this season - Baker Mayfield. Hunt did have an amazing game - with 106 rushing yards...and a game winning TD...but Kyle comes up a bit short (3 points). So with 107 electoral points, The Moose becomes the Winner elect.

CHEERLEADER OF THE WEEK

Yes, I thought about making it Nancy Pelosi (so many pictures that would have worked for that joke) but we all know who the hottest girl in the House of Representative is....AOC. Undisputed.

          Kareem let out a sigh before he unlocked his door and stepped into his apartment with Theo by his side.   He’d been feeling more exhausted than usual these days, like his energy had been drained somehow. Lucky, he had Theo to make him chuckle with her jokes and everything and make him feel less like death, because honestly… that’s how he’d been feeling lately. And with the dead vampire after the new years, Kareem was feeling out of himself. “Thanks for picking what we’d eat tonight.” He said as he placed the take-out food package on the table. “I wasn’t in the mood to cook tonight.” A smile graced his lips as he looked at her and shortly after, Kareem made his way to her. He brushed her dark strands behind her ears and pressed a soft kiss upon her lips. “Have I ever told you how much glad I am that you wanted to stay here?”

          Kareem ran a hand over his face as the other held the cupholder for their coffees.   These last few weeks had been draining to say the least, add a corpse to the mix and the witch was feeling unlike himself. And then... he'd found the coin in one of his pockets, so of course, he couldn't help but feel like the witches were next and that he was being targeted as the next victim. He'd kept his discovery as a secret to his loved ones, not wanting to raise any worries or suspicions until he had a concrete answer to his inquiries. Luckily, he had his friend Charvitha to count on and maybe, try and help him finding answers.

“So…” He offered the fellow witch a fading smile. “I’m taking a page off your book and offering some coffee in exchange for your time if you have some to spare?” Placing the holder on the counter, Kareem handed Vitha the one he’d got her and took his own. “I could use your expertise on something.”

Kareem usually didn't get his mother flowers because to him, it felt like there was always an apology attached to the bouquet of flowers, however, the woman had been awarded with a community recognition for her doings in Portum, so he figured flowers would give her house a nice touch. "Hi, Theo." He complimented the shop owner with his usual, charming smile. "Are chrysanthemums a good type of flower to gift your mother with?" He asked, since Kareem didn't really know much about flowers in the first place. "Have in mind I'm looking for a 'congratulations' type of bouquet, so..."

         “  i’ll  be  there  in  a  sec  !  ”  theo  calls  out  from  the  back ��as  the  bell  by  the  front  door  sounds  .  she  lets  out  a  satisfied  sigh  as  she  eyes  her  latest  arrangement  before  picking  up  the  bouquet  and  venturing  out  towards  the  front  of  the  shop  .  “  what  can  i  getcha  ?  lookin���  for  something  specific  ?  or  do  you  want  some  suggestions  ?  we’ve  got  some  beautiful  chrysanthemums  that  just  came  in  today  .  ”

There was sly chuckle that escaped from Kareem lips when he spotted Kiyan in the distance, looking as flamboyant and as hot as the demon could while dressed as a sexy nun. Apparently, Kareem hadn't gotten the memo that he was supposed to be wearing his blue shirt with a couple of buttons off or something in order to fit in. "How is this not hurting you?" He asked the other while using his powers to lift the cross that reddened Kiyan's chest slightly around the shape of the object. Lucky for Kareem, rosaries still had metal beads connecting them to the other beads, and the cross was also made of some kind of metal. "Wait... pain is sort of your thing, isn't it?" He chuckled yet again, once more using his powers to tug on the rosary around Kiyan's neck.

                 Theo was doing it again…     they were pulling away from Kareem, just like they did back when the professor was having trouble with his health. Had it not been Theo’s imput and Kiyan finding that old coin deeply hidden inside his coat’s pocket, Kareem wasn’t sure he would be pulling up into his partner’s driveway with beers and food for them to enjoy a quiet night together. In a way, he owed them a lot. Both Theo and Kiyan. And while there wasn’t much he could do to get back into the demon’s graces but to wait, with Theo, he felt like there was more to be done.

“Hello, beautiful.” He smiled, leaning in to steal a soft kiss from her lips, before lifting up both hands. “I come bearing gifts. Beer and your favorite.” Another kiss was stolen and then the witch was allowed into his partner’s house. “And lots of cuddling after that. I heard those are your favorite?” Kareem looked over his shoulder, his tone playful as it usually got around her. 

He set the beers and the takeout bags on her kitchen island and opened one of the bottles to give Theo, then another bottle for himself. The others, he placed in her fridge. “Did you have a good day?” He asked as he started getting the containers out of the bags.

                   Kareem double-checked their watch,     making sure they still had time to brew themselves some coffee before Daniel’s session. Usually, they liked making their patients as comfortable as possible, which meant having some coffee, water or some cookies (provided by sweet Billie at the Sweetest Tooth) to munch on during their sessions. Daniel, Kareem had noticed, enjoyed hot chocolate more than he ever did coffee, so, when the witch opened their office’s door to welcome the young Banshee in, they had hot chocolate (sadly, a nespresso pod type) and cookies ready for him.

“How have you been, Daniel?” They smiled, motioning for the comfortable sofa across from their chair. “I bought new chocolate pods. See if you like this one.” Again, their voice was calm. Soothing, even, as they picked up their cup of coffee and sipped on it. “How has this week been for you? Anything in particular you'd like to start with?”

               Kareem had just left their classes for the day and figured they could stop at the Sweetest Tooth to get Theo something sweet to eat.      Their partner had been feeling a little low these last few days and, as much as Kareem wanted to insist on Theo telling them what was wrong, they had also learned not to push when it came to their partner. So, they texted the florist and asked if they were home, the idea of having a cozy movie night in with some greasy food, sweets and beer coming to mind, before putting their phone away and stepping into the bakery.

It was just their luck that someone Theo had mentioned being from their past, was leaving the shop at the same time, which caused the witch to excuse themselves as they stepped aside. “Hey–you’re… Fletcher, aren’t you? Theo's friend.” They asked, smiling a little and then offering their hand. “I’m Kareem. I don’t know if they’ve spoken about me, but I’ve definitely heard a lot about you.”

               With everything going on in town and his latest advances when it came to Theo,     when Valerian suggested catching up with drinks and the like, Kareem actually welcomed the change. Not that he wanted to be away from his partner, but he also knew the florist needed some time by herself to think things through, so, he agreed on having it happen in his own apartment.

By the time Valerian arrived, Kareem had already finished organizing their favorite snacks from their college years on the center table and was finishing moving two more beer cans from the fridge to the freezer. 

The witch opened the door, welcoming his friend further in. The commotion caused Binx to lift up his head from where he laid on the couch and move to hide behind the furniture, as an attempt not to be disturbed by anyone. “How have you been, Val?” The witch asked after breaking away from the hug and stepping aside. “Have you been adapting well to Portum?”

               Imbolc had always been one of Kareem’s favorite celebrations of the year,    quickly followed by Litha, and this year more specifically, the witch had more things to celebrate and be thankful for. The witches had just finished doing their offerings and thanking the Goddess when he spotted Vitha and Bisma not too far from the offerings altar. He’d always hoped to become a father someday, and although it was way too soon to be bringing it up to Theo, it was also nice to practice with some of the witch’s children.

He was about to approach the little girl when he noticed the seven-year-old holding something as if it were a secret she was trying to keep. Maybe, since people were more preoccupied with other things, she would have succeeded. Her mother was chatting with other people, so this was probably something she didn’t know about or, she hadn’t noticed yet.

“Hey Bisma, how are you?” He approached the little girl, crouching down in front of her to talk to her while being on her eye level. He tried being as nice as possible, after all, she was just a child. He'd been a child too, a curious child who had wanted nothing more than to run around doing magic and practicing different spells in the company of his mother and sisters. So, of course he was nice enough to tell her that syphoning from other witches was dangerous, that she could end up hurting them and, he knew she was a good girl. He knew she was nice and wouldn't want to hurt anyone, of course.

Once Kareem had finished talking to her, he held onto her hand and found Vitha in the crowd, gently touching her shoulder to catch her attention. “Mind if we steal you for a minute?” His charming persona was still there, trying not to act like Bisma wasn’t syphoning from another young witch in broad daylight.

He picked Bisma up, adjusting the seven-year-old to his hips while facing her mother. “So… Bisma and I were just chatting. Do you know what this is, Vitha?” He asked, fishing the token the little girl was holding from his pocket and handing it to Charvita. “I–think she should hear it from her mom that syphoning can be dangerous… maybe over some ice cream?” He smiled, tickling the young child in his arms to make her laugh. "Hm? What do you say? Should mom buy us some ice cream?"

Once he was done with his morning classes, Kareem figured he could stop by Rosie’s and get himself something to eat before heading back to his office. Winter classes were usually slow-paced, even when he tried keeping things in a fun and open to discussion environment. Not many people would bother getting out of their beds, especially on particularly cold days such as this one. He didn’t mind it, though. It meant that he could do just that: ignore the lunch in his bag and stop by Rosie’s to have something he hadn’t made, himself.

As he approached the line, he saw someone thanking the waitress, the interest in his pie piquing as he watched the little interaction. His aura was exactly like Valerian’s. Reaper. “Is the pie any good today?” He asked, motioning his head towards the object of his question. “I’m wondering if I should order a slice or if I should just stop by The Sweetest Tooth for a dessert.”

His work in Portum was slow paced, it was true. Working as a paramedic in a city compared to a small town like Portum was an entirely different animal altogether. But one thing stayed consistently true - his hours were long and they were irregular. He didn't mind it, he supposed. It gave him a sense of purpose. It was thursday, and he was on call. But emergencies in this town seemed to be few and far between ⸺ even given recent events. He suspected he would have the entire day to himself without incident. Still, he had his ear to the ground. He always did. Cyrus looked up from his worn leather-bound notebook now, fountain pen in hand. He'd decided to spend his lunch writing at Rosie's. "Thank you," he said to his waitress, smiling politely as she left him with a coffee, black, and a cherry pie.
