“What’ll it be?” Raff asked when someone approached the bar, too busy cleaning out glasses to give them a proper greeting. It might not have been a busy night, but it was Ivy’s day off which meant that Raff was lumped with Richard, the lazy, good-for-nothin’ nephew of his boss who’d only been given a job due to his mother’s plea that he do something with his life. Raff only wished that the ‘something’ she’d been talking about didn’t involve Richard lumbering his way into his personal space, phone in hand as he tried to ‘vlog’ his working experience. Whatever the fuck vlogging was.
Not that he’d ever admit it, but he wished Ivy were here instead. She might have been a pain in his ass, but she was a damn sight better at bartending than Richard was who’d asked if an IPA was something you got at the bank the other day.
Still glowering in the young man’s direction as he typed out something on his phone, Raff heard a familiar Southern lilt float over from the man who’d approached. He turned around, quicker than anyone would describe to be casual. Richard forgotten about, his eyes widened a little when he recognised Harlow.
“Oh. Hey,” he said, busying himself with getting the beer that Harlow had ordered. He had to awkwardly shimmy around Richard in order to get the bottles out of the fridge and was immediately presented with a phone screen in his face, the camera mirroring his own unimpressed reflection back to him.
“Raff, say hi to my followers, I’m livestreaming,” Richard insisted, his floppy fringe bouncing as he eagerly nodded his head at Raff. Like some sort of goddamn chicken.
With his free hand, Raff grabbed the phone off of Richard and quickly tossed it into the sink where it landed with a clatter. Maybe he’d even cracked the phone screen. It was possible that it was going to come out of his paycheck but he also knew that his boss wasn’t going to properly reprimand him over something like this. He couldn’t afford to lose Raff, seeing as there was no one else eagerly lining up to sell overpriced beer to strangers and deal with fucking Richard of all people.
Ignoring the indignant squawking from the man in question, Raff headed back over to Harlow.
“Sorry about that,” he said, not sounding very apologetic at all. He pushed the bottles towards Harlow. The two bottles.
“You got company or are you just thirsty?” he asked, curiosity getting the better of him. Harlow wasn’t exactly a regular in the way that Raff usually labeled people regulars, which was to say he didn’t view him in any sort of derogatory light. ‘Regular’ was reserved for the old, greasy men who barely managed to stumble their way over to a bar stool and relied on Raff to carry them back out and dump them in the backseat of a taxi at the end of the night. They were the kind of men to try and knock someone else out with a pool cue or threaten Raff with a broken bottle if he told them he was cutting them off. No, Harlow wasn’t a regular. A familiar face at the bar though? Raff could call him that, he supposed.
That being said, he’d never seen Harlow here with anyone else. So if the man wasn’t drinking alone tonight, could Raff be blamed for wanting to know more?

“You’ve got it all wrong, Mav. Honestly, we’re just friends. Best friends.”
If that was the argument Ellie was sticking with, then Maverick Rojas was not going to be the one to disagree with her. That said, he couldn’t help but smile at her over his coffee, tittering as she rewarded him with a roll of her eyes, her contagious laughter soon following the action. Elizabeth Smith was probably his favourite coworker, though it would take an army to get him to admit as much. It wasn’t that he disliked any of the other teachers, not by a longshot, but Ellie was the only one who truly shared his passion for teaching, the only one that even seemed to like her students at all. Her friendship – as she so delicately kept insisting that’s all it is! – with her best friend Mac was the talk of the town. Or, at the very least, their little Elementary School staff room. The teachers, Maverick included, loved to tease her about how dreamy her friend was, the tips of Ellie’s ears tinging a deeper shade of pink. Maverick, inexperienced as he was, had always thought that Mac – or perhaps Reid, as only she seemed to call him – was in love with Ellie, but the young teacher seemed to insist otherwise. Still, it made for some light, but terribly fun, ribbing over a cup of coffee before the start of their working day.
There was still over an hour to go until the bell tolled, calling for the start of the school day. 7:00am and both Ellie and Maverick were chitter chatting in the staff room like two old maids, delighting in one another’s company and always the first to arrive – with the exception of the caretaker. As the two nattered away, swapping stories about students, gushing over pictures of Dylan – Ellie's little boy, who was prepping hard for the upcoming talent show – the door to the faculty lounge swung open, creaking on its hinges as it went.
“There’s a delivery waiting for you outside, Mr Rojas,” Anette told him. Anette was their school secretary, and try as he might to love and adore her, she seemed to detest him with all her might. Her accent made his name sound dirty and broken, her disdain plain on her face whenever she passed him in the hallway, or when he greeted her upon her arrival for the day. It hurt a little, to know that she thought ill of him for whatever reason, and yet he couldn’t help but be charmed by the reproachful way she looked down at him, glasses perched on the very tip of her nose. Ellie had once said she resembled Roz from Monsters Inc, and despite his best behaviour, it had always stuck with him. “Vice Principal Diaz said he assigned you to handle it. Lord knows why.”
With that, she turned on her heel, offering him no more information, nor even so much as a kindly smile for young Elizabeth. The latter of the two then stuck out her tongue, blowing raspberries in a delightful way to announce Anette’s departure, and Maverick grinned back at her, crinkling his nose in delight.
“You’re so naughty!” he laughed, shaking his head. He gave her a playful wink and a quick flourish of his hand, waving her goodbye for the time being. “Righty-o, off to work I go!”
Pushing to his feet, Maverick set his coffee to the side and gave the front of his jeans a quick wipe down, ridding himself of any residue crumbs that his cookie may have left behind. He knew exactly what the delivery was, and why he’d been left in charge. With such a good friend in Simon Hudson, the two had managed to sweet talk Billy into helping the school out. In a gesture that Maverick thought was just the darn sweetest, Billy had told him that every year A Novel Idea donates a number of money and books to varying organisations, schools, libraries, and children that they thought might benefit from them. Luckily for Maverick, his students were about to benefit greatly from the other man’s kindness.
“Thank you kindly for all your hard work, my sweet li’l messenger bird,” Maverick doted on Anette as he strolled through the door behind her, smiling sweetly as he did so.
She did not return his smile in kind, nor did she seem particularly happy with his assessment of her, but such was life. You couldn’t please everybody, after all. Turning his attention away from her desk, his eyes finally strayed to the entryway before him. Squinting through the glass door, his gaze landed on several large boxes that were placed, somewhat precariously, on the steps leading into the building. Beside them, frankly, was a man so handsome that, were it the 1950’s, Maverick might have been caught clutching his pearls while Anette fanned him desperately with her paperwork.
“Now that sure is a mighty delivery you have there,” Maverick stated, slipping out onto the small set of steps, the automatic doors now open wide behind him. “You, sir, are about to make my kiddos very happy.”

“Alright, handsome, you’re home,” Marley laughed as Scoob tugged at his leash. Evidently the golden retriever had realised just how close he was to his usual haunt, the cute little sign for A Novel Idea swinging in the breeze further along the street. She highly doubted that Scoob could actually read the sign, but if any dog were to suddenly develop an interest in phonics then it would be him. Definitely not Bucket, whose leash was looped around the wrist of her other hand, dopily content to walk alongside her and try to poke his nose into every overspilling trash bag they came across.
“Aw, don’t you dare get your stink all over Scoob, you shit,” she warned her own dog. He’d tried to mount Scoob on numerous occasions before, so it wasn’t like the caution was unheeded. Plus, she’d just groomed Scoob to within an inch of his life and wasn’t about to let her own blue heeler mess up her handiwork.
Scoob let out a low whine outside the door of the bookstore-slash-cafe, obviously knowing his handsome owner was inside. She’d offered to walk him back after his appointment seeing as Scoob was her last client and she knew that Billy would be snowed under with business right now, what with Christmas approaching and everyone in New York deciding that their loved one needed a new cookbook or smutty romance novel. She’d thought that they’d timed it pretty well and gotten here quickly, but Scoob was obviously impatient to see Billy. Taking pity on him, she pushed the door open, spilling in after him and dragging Bucket along with her.
She’d only been in the store a handful of times - a reader she was not - but it had a nice, homely feel to it. It felt lived in, like not totally a shop, but something cozier. She understood why it had so many regulars. Plus, it helped that Billy was so freaking nice to literally everyone that he met.
The store owner in question, however, was nowhere to be seen. Even Scoob seemed to have given up on looking for him and was suddenly busy licking his paws.
“Nuh uh, big guy. I did not spend hours on you so you could get yourself all matted again,” Marley said, pushing herself up onto her tiptoes to see if she could magically make herself taller than a shelf in order to see Billy. Giving up fairly quickly, she noticed a gap in the line of customers over by the coffee counter and taking the reprieve for the lucky strike that it was, she walked both dogs over to the till.
“Hiya,” she smiled at the older man behind the counter. Salt-and-pepper beard and an easygoing smile on his face, he was the exact kind of older man that Marley interacted with for less than ten seconds and immediately wanted to gain the good favour of. She liked it when older people thought she was nice and polite instead of taking one glance at her beanie and combat boots and writing her off as another hooligan youth. To be fair, when she hung out with Diego, she sort of was a hooligan youth, but that was by the by.
“Is Billy around?” she asked the man. “I have a special delivery for him.” She lifted up the hand still holding onto Scoob’s leash to illustrate her point.

Ivy silently cursed the day Billy McHale opened this stupid little bookshop with its stupid little café. Sure, maybe a little dramatic, but she was in a rut. She’d hoped to pick the bookseller’s brain and find some assistance in getting Wardo a Christmas present, but the bastard had gone on vacation, leaving her high and dry. She’d been walking up and down the Fiction aisle for 30 minutes, her hideous little Apple Watch (a gift from her hideous little Ex) having a field day, and she felt uninspired. Mostly because she’d been staring at the books with so much indifference, none of the titles or authors meaning a damned thing to her in the slightest. Ivy was not a reader, never had been a reader, and never planned on becoming a reader.
With a groan, she glanced across to where she could see a slither of the café. She didn’t recognise the barista on the till, and she knew that Billy had been having a quick turnaround of both baristas and booksellers recently, so she didn’t expect to recognise much of the staff – bar maybe Simon and, as lovely as he was, she wasn’t sure he’d be her best bet for literary recommendations. When you looked up the word himbo in the dictionary, all you got was a photo of Simon – and a very pretty photo, at that.
She wondered then, if maybe she should just give up for the day. Call it what it was – a lost cause – and head home. Christmas was still a few weeks ago, she still had time, and maybe Billy would get his ass back, do his job, and find her a damn book before the Holiday Season rolled around. With that thought, she settled on leaving, and vacated the aisle, turning the corner into Poetry so fast that she collided, full pelt, with a man. Tiny as she was, Ivy’s body shook with the impact as she lost her footing slightly, stumbling backwards before steadying herself. A litany of curse words died on the tip of her tongue as she stared up at literal Sex-In-Human-Form that towered over her, a look of embarrassment evident in his features.
“Well fuck me, aren’t you just the most beautiful man I’ve ever seen?” Ivy muttered to herself, unfiltered and entirely without shame. The man – if you could even dare to call him that – that she’d collided was huge, both in height and in stature – and in Dick Size, she was so positive, too. Her sudden desire to leave the shitty little bookstore was overcome with an urge to memorise every book in Wardo’s catalogue just so that she could convince this Specimen that she was a literary Goddess, worthy of his head between her legs. Honestly, she was suddenly a little surprised he hadn’t shattered her in two with that collision, though the idea wasn’t something she was opposed to, either. She’d let him snap her in two and eat her from within if it suited him.
Taking a slightly more elegant step back – not that Ivy had ever had any idea how to exude elegance – she pressed a hand to her chest, feigning remorse. Doing her best to channel the prissiest, most entitled fucker you’ve ever met, she offered up an apology.
“I am so sorry,” she told the man, fluttering her lashes up at him, a pout on her lips that she hoped perfectly toed the line between timid damsel in distress and sexy minx in dire need of a punishment. “I didn’t see you there at all. I was just so eager to get to the poetry section, I lost all my senses entirely.”

“Fifteen years?” Raff asked, once he’d calculated the math. It surprised him, in all honesty. Harlow still tended to speak about his wife as if the split was still a fresh memory, like no time at all had passed and he still held a torch for her. It was the only reason Raff could think of to explain the blatant fondness in his tone.
But it had been fifteen years, apparently. Enough for Harlow and his wife’s daughter to be classed as a full-blown adult now. He frowned a little, something itching at the back of his mind.
“Did I know you had a kid?” he asked, maybe too bluntly.
He couldn’t remember if that was something Harlow had shared with him before, or if Raff’s mind had had just been completely overtaken by the revelation of Harlow liking men that it had overwritten every other piece of information he had on the other man. He hoped Harlow had just forgone mentioning his daughter before, if only for the sake of Raff’s pride not suffering too big a dent.
Then, Harlow turned around and asked Raff if he had any kids. Without thinking, Raff let out a harsh laugh, one lacking any humour. Although there was something a little bit funny when it came to thinking of Rafferty Reyes as a father. He’d thought about it a long time ago, during the early days of his marriage to Helen, when they’d been young newlyweds who adored each other and Ted was just Raff’s best friend, nothing more. He’d thought that he and Helen would no doubt go down the road of starting a family.
Then, things had turned ugly between them. He wasn’t stupid enough to think he wasn’t largely to blame. They’d still tried for kids though, or rather Helen would insist they did. Raff would lay on his back, allowing Helen to take what she needed from him, but she’d always grow frustrated and he’d never been able to stay hard for her. She’d rip herself off him, hands clenched tight into fists as she rolled over onto the space next to him and cried herself to sleep. Eventually, she stopped that too and Raff moved into the guest room. The relief he felt at Helen no longer trying to sleep with him somehow didn’t manage to outweigh the guilt.
Realising Harlow had no explanation behind the bitter sound he’d made, Raff shook his head.
“No. No kids for me. Probably for the best,” he answered, eyes darting down to the countertop.
The implication of Harlow’s ex-wife being similar to Helen, enough for them to swap stories about unfortunate dinner parties, was almost enough to make Raff laugh again. Instead, he just smirked, pushing his curls back from where they’d fallen over his eyes and gave Harlow a small shrug.
“Doubt you’d wanna hear my stories,” he said.
Shamefully, he’d almost hoped that the man who’d come into the bar had been Harlow’s date after all, if only so he would no longer have to keep navigating a conversation where he was constantly in danger of embarrassing himself. He’d already blushed in front of Harlow enough for one night. Still, that didn’t stop the twinge of sympathy he felt when he caught sight of Harlow’s downtrodden expression as the other man checked his watch and confirmed the evening to be dead in the water.
Eyes trained on the other man, in an unthinking way that would only cause him to awkwardly clear his throat if he got caught, Raff chewed on his bottom lip for a moment before he moved back over to the fridge. He leaned down and grabbed a beer bottle before making his way back to Harlow. Gently, he slid it over to him.
At the other man’s questioning look, he said, “It’s on the house. You can still tell your wife a guy got you a drink tonight. If that helps.”
Harlow knew he had this terrible habit, really, of talking about Laurel in the present tense. His wife this, and his wife that. It was awfully confusing and he supposed, a little misleading. It was coming up on fifteen years since Harlow had had the privilege of calling beautiful, vivacious Laurel Buckley his wife, and he just knew all the guys back home were slapping their upper thigh, asking, how could he let a good thing like that go? He wondered himself sometimes. He knew there was still of a hell of a lot of love there, but just not the kind where they could call each other man and wife.
"She's my ex wife, actually." Harlow admitted, wrinkling his nose slightly, as though it were some kind of dirty secret. "We split when my little girl was ten. She's gonna be twenty five next year."
Bringing the bottle to his lips, Harlow swallowed down another mouthful of bitter beer. He was a chatterbox, and could happily talk about Laurel til the cows came home, but it took a little bit of alcohol lining his stomach to get him talking about Rosie in any depth. He missed her something fierce, but it was clear she just didn't miss him back.
"You got any kids, Raff?" Harlow asked, a shy smile on his features. He was aware he was talking about himself a lot. He wasn't sure if this deflection was a sure-fire way to get the attention off of him, or to talk more about Rosie. He'd be open to either, depending on how the night ended up. His attention was already slowly waning away from his potential no-show of a date.
As self involved as Harlow could be when he got chatting, he didn't miss the way the other man's body language changed when Harlow dropped a dirty word or two. Raff seemed a little uncomfortable, his face turning the color of a ripe radish freshly dug up, standing ramrod straight and white-knuckling the bar. He didn't take Raff for the kind of man who embarrassed easily, and well, he hadn't said anything to suggest he had a problem with Harlow being out here with a guy... maybe it was merely the intimate window into Harlow's sex life (or lack of) that had the other man blushing like an unfortunate matador!
"Oh yeah? Bet we could swap some stories." Harlow raised a single eyebrow, wondering on what occasion Raff had been strong-armed into a fancy dinner party. Not that Laurel's dinner parties had been anything high class. Usually a couple of friends on their back porch, beer and good conversation. But still, on the odd chance they hosted a sit-down dinner, the Texan was surely to run his mouth.
When Raff jerked his head towards the door, Harlow almost forgot just why he was here in the first place. He followed Raff's line of sight, feeling hope rise in his stomach, only for it to plummet and fall spectacularly. Either the man looked nothing like his profile picture, or that wasn't the guy. His mind was made up for him as he watched him settle into a seat next to a gorgeous woman. Harlow turned back to the bartender with a fresh wince on his face.
"She seems to like it fine." he tried to joke, the words sounding odd on his tongue. Shoulders slumping a little, Harlow sighed, "At what point do I admit this guy probably ain't swanning through the door any time soon?"
Shucking his sleeve back, Harlow peered at his watch.
"Time of death? 7:25." he stated, trying to tail end his words with a laugh. "Listen, you just don't keep a lady waitin' for nearly half an hour."
