what's nice about written correspondence is that I can take the time I need to organize my thoughts, subtly look up a pop culture reference I didn't get, or quickly double check the meaning of a word before I use it. I also like having records of conversations, partly because I'm sentimental about literally everything and partly because sometimes your mom will try to send you mail without including your apartment number and then irritably INSIST that YOU must have never given it to her in the first place
the downside of written correspondence is that it is so so so easy to see a message, think 'oh I'll respond to that when I get a second' and then never ever actually do it
#thoughts brought to you by an etsy seller being friendly and me thinking 'hhh I didn't wanna have a conversation'#and realizing that- no- I'm not a misanthrope I just feel weird about typing up a Small Talk Response two days later#and ALSO feel weird about ghosting#whereas if I'd been buying wool at a farmer's market it would have been a perfectly lovely nonstressful two minute chat-- you know?#but no I get an email that I have a message and then I have to redirect to etsy which redirects me to the purchase rather than the messages#which has a HUGE popup for 'IF YOU HAVE AN ISSUE WITH YOUR PURCHASE CONTACT ETSY FIRST' that covers the messages that you can't even X out#and it's A Whole Thing so I see the email that I have a message and think 'ughh I'll mess with that later' and then I just simply don't#the opposite of this could have been an email. this could have been thirty seconds of small talk#about me
