Sadistic Love (Oh baby)

I love Hollywood romance, but not the run of the mill ones, no “Dear John” or “Remember Me” will do. No, I like the ones that depict just how cruel and soul-crushing romance can be, I like the ones where no one gets a happy ending because from personal experience, those are far and few between when it comes to romance. I like the ones where the main character is left in a puddle of misery and self-loathing because of the heart-wrenching experiences they have gone through, I don’t mean things like physical abuse, that is of no interest to me, I find no entertainment in something so deplorable.

For example, there is a movie called “Oh, Ramona”, which I highly recommend to any and everyone who will listen. It centers around a teenage boy named Andrei who has spent many of his formative years obsessing over the titular character Ramona. Without spoiling anything, he soon becomes her plaything and she seems to derive great joy in knowing that no matter how much she ruins his social life, he will still come running when she calls. Further, into the movie Andrei actually finds another girl named Anemona, Anemona is the opposite of Ramona, she is stable(er), compassionate, and seems to be a much healthier option for Andrei. Again without spoiling anything, that doesn’t work out, and Andrei finds himself once again running to Ramona when she calls. Now the average person will look at this situation and cheer for Anemona and Andrei as a couple, I, on the other hand, prefer Ramona. I admit that Anemona is without a doubt the healthier option for Andrei’s sanity, but were I in his shoes I would be so pulled to Ramona and her chaos, that Anemona would quickly become an afterthought.

I could never put into words why such chaos and instability are so intoxicating to me and believe me, I have tried a million times. I have tried to write characters that would encapsulate all those traits about women like Ramona that drive me wild, but I fail literally every time. I think that it’s because that is such a specific type of woman, one that is about as rare as it gets, clingy but not in the way where they cry when you leave, in the way that they will manipulate your emotions in the most calculating ways to ensure that you will never want anyone else but them. The kind of woman who only wants you, but will constantly keep you in doubt, but just as you begin to decide to pull away, she shows you the smallest sign of affection and you come running right back. Yes, yes I know that this is incredibly unhealthy and probably borders on emotional abuse, but hey everyone has their kinks, mine just happens to be the kind that is emotionally destructive, so no judgments. But as I was saying before, trying to capture this kind of character on a page has proven to be incredibly difficult, obviously, people have done it, but they seem to draw from personal experience. I have small experiences with such women, but it’s usually been scattered experiences like if you took all the flaws in my past relationships and compiled them into one woman she would be perfect. I mean, perfect is a strange word to use in this situation but in terms of what I want, it fits. God, the more I write the more fucked up I sound, but hey this is about as real as I can be, I love the chaos, I love the drama, I love the pain and the small spells of joy.

My love life has been a pretty big mess to be honest, which can most likely be attributed to this strange desire of mine. Ninety-nine percent of all my relationships involved me being played for a fool, or being left in a position where I was constantly questioning the dynamic of the relationship itself. The absolute worst was one where no the woman involved was so close to fully capturing the traits I was talking about, she knew she had me, and she played with me like a damned puppet. A few months back she waltzed back into my life after several years and all though I convinced myself that I was older and less likely to fall for the same tricks, low and behold… it happened all over again. At least, this time I was smart enough to not pursue when she left this time, effectively ending the game. As much as I say I am glad that I didn’t fall into the same trap, as much as I want to say that this shows personal growth, there is still that part of me that wants to fall back in just to feel that same flurry of emotions. The infatuation, the suffering, hope that I can earn her affection, the ecstasy whenever she affirmed that I wasn’t the only one feeling things, god damn it’s a feeling like no other.

I have given this a great deal of thought in the past, I always wonder why I seem to only be attracted to the broken and the breakers. The only truly healthy relationship I had ended in a heartbeat because the ex I had before her came calling and like a loyal puppy I came right back to her side. Turns out, it was really just her wondering if she could still have me whenever she wanted, turned out she could and like a fool I fell right into it. The saddest part is that the girl who I so coldly abandoned was so into me and she had no problem showing it, she begged me to stay, offered to do things that it would be ungentlemanly of me mention, she completely surrendered her dignity in hopes that I would stay and her friends guilted me for weeks about how often she was crying. Needless to say, I have never felt like a bigger piece of shit in my life and I felt like I completely deserved to be toyed with in the way I was, the only solace I find in this anecdote is knowing that she went on to find a man who was and still is very good too her and last I heard they were engaged to be married. I wish her only the best, and I will always be sorry from the depths of my heart because no one deserves to be cast aside in such a callous way.

Holy shit I had no intention of getting sad when I started typing this, but here I am now thoroughly depressed and lamenting over what could have been and what has been. I hate the way that I am, well not the whole product, but the aspect that can only be happy in misery, as much as I wish it wasn’t that way, I am so terrified of being bored in a relationship, I am absolutely terrified of finding someone who will be a steady rock, someone I can always rely on, because above all things I fear complacency, and while I know those two things are not mutually exclusive, knowing myself, it is very likely to happen. God, this is really bringing me down, I hate getting all really like this, I hate introspection, for me, it never ends in a positive place. Signing Off.

Wow, thanks for blessing my inbox with such a fantastically awful leading statement. What, you want me to say Destiel shippers won’t do that? I mean, there’s a bazillionity of them and a lot of them think Destiel is going canon or should do or at least would take canon as utter vindication of everything they’ve read in the text, which is a quantifiable, serious amount of storytelling and tropes which all directly imply Destiel. If people throw a street party because it happened, that’s their street party, you know?

I am not very well qualified to talk about wider shipping culture but Destiel fans who see it in canon have a certain axe to grind with the show because of the feeling that it’s textually present and many (myself included) would not have thought to ship it until something in the text flipped them and sheer incredulity about the depth of this story brought them to fandom and interacting with others to analyse and understand the story better.

I don’t believe other ships including ones involving Cas and Dean elsewhere have anywhere near the same textual level of storytelling and tropes to give them a shadow of what Dean and Cas have. I posted last night about how early Destiel was ship teasing without storytelling intent, and other prominent ships never moved beyond ship teasing and one of them certainly never will and can’t. But for YEARS Destiel has been running on the rails of a narrative between and about the characters which can be taken romantically. If it went canon it would not be the show just randomly picking one of 12 out of a hat and giving it their blessing.

Like, yes I suppose it does make the shippers look entitled if you ship on different means, e.g. chemistry, blurred lines between actor and character, which ones are hot and you think would look good fucking each other, and all the reasons which are great for shipping characters (and I’m not judging - I like ships which are completely implausible, not implied in canon, or are otherwise deeply unsuitable for shipping like Destiel. 3 of my coda fics this season were Mary/Charlie, Mary/Ketch and Cas/Benjamin instead of Destiel, and of those only Mary/Ketch was actually based on canon, and Mary/Charlie was hauling out a dead character who I thought would be great to ship Mary with from the realms of implausibility. And I can understand if you have all or a main ship which is in these sort of brackets instead of rooting for the canon storyline and waiting for it to provide you with all your material, then it’s different and feels different.)

But I don’t think Destiel shippers enjoying the idea of it going canon (because this is what’s upsetting you RIGHT NOW, not the idea that it POTENTIALLY goes canon and everyone’s a dick, you obviously feel like people enjoying it IN canon are being dicks RIGHT NOW) is offensive to other shippers, or that if you meet us on the grounds of fanon where all the shipping goes on, we’re anything more than more well-fed by canon than other shippers who don’t ship off of canon, because we get a lot of material for our ship from canon.

But great transformative works always add to the experience, and there’s so many interpretations of the characters in fanon which have moved 1000 miles from canon, in every possible way, which really just end up on what people LIKE to read, if they like D/s or AUs where they’re socially awkward hipsters or tentacle porn or canonverse but huge drastic changes. EVERY ship in every fandom has variations and fanon lives of the characters and if the fandoms are large enough, sub-fandoms within them that specifically enjoy certain dynamics. Canon HELPS but it does not define Destiel shippers in what we write about and how we enjoy the ship, and some people enjoy it only in fanon because they think canon Dean is a dick or they hate what’s happened to Cas since whenever or they just like an old dynamic which is easier to wallow in in increasingly AU settings and end up just reading coffee shop romances where the mains happen to be called Dean and Cas, and some people can probably only get into it if it’s so gritty and canon they can still taste the last episode on their tongue when they read the coda fic.

As a cumulative experience of what fandom is, Destiel going canon is ONLY vindication, because we can enjoy it in fanon as is, but the issues around the canon debate and representation and what have you are an entirely other thing and on THAT playing field canon is the only vindication.

But in that world, it’s not about other ships at all. I’m sorry, but something like Sastiel is just not part of the argument because in canon it’s not teased, not laid down in the depths of the show’s foundations as important, and it’s not part of the massive metatextual, media and fandom and show dance about the show sucking it up and making Dean bi and Destiel canon because that is only the MEDIUM in which the show needs to deal with the representation problem. If the thing had been swirling around Sam n Cas the entire time, then the debate would be about Sam and Cas. But it’s not. It’s about Dean and Cas.

Like, I’m sorry if other shippers want in on the idea of ship going canon vindication but on this show there’s such an entrenched, weird battle about Destiel’s place in the narrative, it’s 9 years too late on this one for it to be any other ship in any other way on this show.

I mean I’d say to other shippers, don’t go out and be a dick to people if it DOES go canon, just enjoy it and try not to be too horrible even if you do get involved in ship wars, like, just take the win and be the bigger person, but that comment isn’t exactly going to do much because I’m not the queen of this ship issuing decrees which seems to be the only positive outcome you’d ever think you could get out of asking me this ridiculous question. Like. What the heck were you expecting me to say? Oh no boo hoo we’re so nice, we’d never do that? It’s a gazillion shippers and a lot of them feel bitter and disenfranchised and they’re not going to consider that they are somehow being rude to other ships, because this is not the side of fandom where you ought to be respectful to people’s fanon practices, but essentially a conflict and we all walked into it where the battle lines were already drawn and it’s this ship and it’s inherently political to ship it if you do so from canon rather than politely excusing yourself to fanon.

If you feel threatened by the ship’s presence in canon because you can see as well as everyone else and are just pretending there’s an equivalence between Destiel and other fanon ships, as if the fanon stage and the canon battle are the same thing, then you’re just being deliberately obtuse as a troll. I mean, I don’t even fucking fight the canon thing that hard, I am a chill shipper who enjoys watching it unfold in canon and don’t make strong demands of canon, but I still know my ship is politicised on this stage about being canon or not and we have to think abou that all the time and if I HAVE to I will wade in as fight hard that it has full right to go canon and should, and that is NOT disrespecting other ships, it’s working with what I already have in my hands immediately from the moment I went “shit, there really is something to all this lovelorn staring they do at each other, isn’t there?”

Anyway YOUR SHIPS, DESTIEL INCLUDED, ARE SUPER DUPER IMPORTANT IN FANON AS MUCH AS EACH OTHER AND BECAUSE THEY MEAN SO MUCH TO WHOEVER IS SHIPPING THEM. END OF.

But fanon is fanon and you’re making a ridiculous argument equating “meaning” aka what fans draw from shipping and what makes them feel good about it into creating transformative works about their ship, to the idea of Destiel going canon as if it’s somehow going to do ANYTHING to the fanon.

Like, people with radically different from canon ideas ABOUT DESTIEL can cope with the show consistently not actually being what they really dig but use it just as a jumping off point to their personal interests in what they use fanon for - whether it’s kink or emotional healing or personal empowerment or just for writing and imagination like the fic writers who mostly just enjoy creating stories and like using fanworks rather than original works to hone their craft and feel confident and comfortable with what they’re doing. I mean, fan artists do the same. They might have the faces of the characters but they’re being depicted in a million different ways nothing LIKE the show.

Fanon is not threatened by canon. Even when canon trounces fanon, fanon rolls its eyes and carries on. And mostly fanon is so far beyond the realm of canon that it’s fairly untouchable anyway. The show can’t do much to fuck up my Cas works in a diner and Dean comes and hangs with him there AU because Cas does not work in a diner and Dean is not exactly up to flirting with a dude across a diner counter all day every day while Sam is literally sitting in the corner the entire time rolling his eyes. If Destiel still goes canon, I still hold the means of production here - I get to decide on my own terms if and when one of them snaps and asks the other to marry them. I would have the luxury to put off making them canon in my fanon even though in real canon they already were together. It’s a fearsome power :P

And I mean, something like Sabriel has enough little connections to canon that its fans can at least show them in the same room interacting and draw from that, but 99.99999999% of that ship is built out of tropes and fun and reading each other’s works and building off of that and creating a ship pretty much out of nowhere for their own amusement and gratification. Canon Destiel’s going to have a hard job doing anything to upset that boat, you know? If you’re offended you WANT to be offended.

Anyway I have now finished my cup of tea so that’s enough grumbling from me but seriously what the heck did you even send me this for? It’s such a petty, miserable view about fandom. If you enjoy your ships you enjoy your fucking ships and nothing can upset that and everyone should leave each others’ fanon fun the hell alone.

So there’s something I’ve been seeing around the fandom neighborhood that has me worried. I’m not going to be expressing a particularly popular opinion, but I hope you’ll at least hear me out.

As kpop fans, we all really love the bands we follow. We make gifs, write fic, draw art, buy albums, learn the songs by heart, know the members so well we could identify them by their pinkie – we’re passionate in our love for our baes. But, sometimes I think we forget that idols are actual, living, breathing human beings. I mean, sasaeng fans literally would not exist if everyone treated idols like people.

When we forget that idols are people, we (as fans) can sometimes cross lines of propriety and respect – often without realizing what we’re doing. There are a lot of ways this can happen, from following bands to their hotels to tweeting inappropriate things an idol. But, there is one issue in particular I want to talk about: NSFW art. In particular, I want to talk about NSFW ask blogs. (And just as a heads up, I will be talking about sex work, abuse, rape, and other sensitive subjects as part of this conversation.)

Recently, there’s been something of a boom in 18+ ask blogs, particularly in some of the bigger fandoms like BTS. These blogs, with their camperson/prostitute/slave themes, often take the likeness of a particular idol (or even multiple idols) and present that likeness in graphically sexual situations. The artists behind these blogs say it is “art” or that it’s only a blog so it cannot do any harm. Some will even dismiss it as “sin,” as though somehow labeling it as such makes it less harmful.

But here’s the thing. NSFW artwork of idols is harmful. By taking the likeness of a real person and drawing them in sexual situations, you are dehumanizing them and objectifying them. More than that, though, AUs that depict campersons or prostitutes often dehumanize sex workers and perpetuate negative stereotypes. So, the harm is doubly present. Let me explain what I mean.

One of the most important things we talk about with sex is the need for consent. If someone does not give clear and coherent consent, having sex with that person is considered rape. If a person is under the influence of drugs or alcohol, they are not able to give consent either. Having sex with a person who is under the influence and thus unable to knowingly give consent is considered rape. The same goes for having sex with someone who is unconscious or someone who withdraws consent during the sex act – they’re all considered rape. And I shouldn’t have to say it, but I will just for the sake of clarity: Rape is not sensual nor desirable, it is wrong. Recovering from rape or sexual assault of any kind can take years, and you never really fully lose the scars from it – at least, not in my experience.

So what does this all have to do with NSFW ask blogs and art? Well, when you have a job as a sex worker, you generally function under the dictates of a contract. This contract determines how much you earn, what you are willing to do for a client, how much money your company receives (if you are working under one), and other important legal matters. A contract not only makes it clear what your job is, but it also affords you protections should one of your boundaries be transgressed. An important part of these contracts, however informal they are, is the sex worker’s right to consent to participating in the sexual activities the client is paying for. A sex worker of any kind should have the right to say no to any act that makes them feel uncomfortable or goes beyond the limits of their job; it’s the same as a normal person having the right to withdraw consent at any point in a sexual engagement with another person. (Money of course complicates the withdrawal of consent in sex work, but the right to no longer consent still exists even when money is involved.) Furthermore, sex workers have the right to fair compensation for the work that they do; anything less is abusive. There are many intricacies to sex work – realities of the job – that most people don’t bother to research before rushing in to depict prostitution or campersons in their creative works. Without this necessary research, there is no way you can really represent what their lives are like, and you are basically saying that they are nothing more than a trite stereotype. And y’all, you shouldn’t be dealing with serious matters without doing your research. @j-ungah recently wrote a really nice little blurb about how the lack of research in creative works can perpetuate harm; I suggest you take a glance at it. Tangent, I know, but still relevant.

Back on track: Everyone has the right to give consent.

When a sex worker is depicted in art, it is important to have that person’s consent. Their likeness is something that cannot be changed about them and is actually part of their intellectual property, particularly since depicting sexual acts can reasonably fall under “private or semi-private acts.” If you do not have that person’s consent to depict them engaging in a sexual act, you are sexually exploiting them. This is doubly true if you stand to gain anything from this art, be it notoriety or money. (Yes, notoriety and a bevy of followers counts as gaining something from the exploitation of someone else’s likeness.)

But wait, idols are famous! They consent, by being in the public, to have artwork of them rendered. Idols happily receive fanart – some even using it on their social media. That means this whole need for consent doesn’t apply, right?

Wrong.

Idols do give consent, by being public figures, to have certain things become public property. Drawing fanart and engaging in fanfic writing can be well within the boundaries of copyright, because it is engaging in social commentary. I would even argue that skinship culture and the teasing of ships by the companies does in fact permit the depiction of idols as queer figures, particularly with their bandmates. But, this consent is not all encompassing. Recently a number of idols have expressed concern and even fear about fan behavior when it crosses the line between public to private matters. T.O.P from BigBang, for instance, asked fans to stop ringing his doorbell night and day. EXO’s Lay had fans try to break into his hotel room. I.O.I had photos taken of them in a bathroom posted online. SuJu’s Heechul had fans surprise him in a urinal, just to steal a look at his body. Zico even said that, “Invading my privacy is no different than abusing me. This is never what you call fan love.” And you know what, he’s right. Idols deserve to have privacy and the opportunity to be treated (and respected!) like actual human beings.

Drawing pornographic art of an idol crosses the boundary into the realms of what should be private. Idols give a lot of things to their fans. They share their talents, they go on horrific diets, work out so they look nice, undergo plastic surgery, and go out of their way to make fans feel special. However, just because they share those things with us does not mean they belong to us. You do not own an idol’s body just because they go topless or just because you “saranghae” them. Unless an idol produces and mass releases a porno, you do not have the right to depict them in sexual situations. Why? Because they have not given consent to their likeness being used in that highly private context in a public forum. Without an idol’s direct consent, depicting them in these ways is sexual exploitation not love.

This lack of consent is particularly true with the camperson/prostitute/slave ask blogs. You might remember I mentioned the need for contracts and consent in sex work. Right? (If not, go back and read the first half again. I can wait.) Right. An important part of any sexual relationship is the establishment of clear boundaries – kink negotiations, if that helps you conceptualize of it better. However, ask blogs are inherently unable to establish consent. They take the likeness of a person and essentially masquerade as that person. Yes, we all know they are not the actual Min Yoongi or the actual Park Chanyeol. But, that person’s name, likeness, and personality are all being used in order to create an ask blog. There are ways in which to do this that are harmless, such as blogs that promote the band or fall within the established consent of being a public figure. NSFW blogs, however, trespass into the realms where consent has not been given. Furthermore, the idol has no say in what they are depicted doing, which often leads to fetishizing and misrepresentation among many other things.

You might say, “But it’s just art.” If that were the case, why would someone say something like this:

The intent to reproduce the exact likeness of someone in a pornographic situation is beyond the limits of art. It is dehumanizing and objectifying that person, so much so that their consent doesn’t matter in the face of your own desires. Furthermore, just because something is art doesn’t mean that it’s okay.

Again, let’s make it a little more personal. Let’s say I decide to start an ask blog where I am posting as you. Yeah, you. And I go to your blog, find all of your selfies, and use your likeness in order to draw you in pornographic situations. Better yet, I open it to my followers, letting them dictate what sexual acts you perform in my artwork. Would you honestly feel like that was acceptable? Or let’s say I do it to one of your friends or your little sister or your favorite teacher. Regardless of who is depicted, if I did not have their consent and drew them in pornographic situations, it would still be wrong. This would be particularly true if my subject were underage or were being viewed by people who were underage; child pornography laws are no joke, and I don’t think y’all take them nearly seriously enough.

Idols are people. They are actual, living and breathing human beings who deserve our respect. If we actually love them, we should respect their right to privacy and not objectify them. If you really want an ask blog focused on a camperson or prostitute, do your research. Talk to people in the field. Read books about personal experiences doing that sort of work. Then, create an original character. An original character might not come with a built in fanbase, but if you’re really dedicated to art and progressing as an artist that shouldn’t be your goal anyway. Don’t perpetuate harm for the sake of getting followers.
