You know, the first draft of my book is about 50% finished, technically speaking. But with how a lot of scenes are out of order and how I still have a lot to add to fill in the gaps, it's gonna be a while before the whole thing is actually finished. And by the end of it all, I'll have a second draft! And then I get to rework it until it's comprehensible.

Character you want?
katalina rao. yeah, i’m doing the ding dang thing
Please describe the character for us
god, where to start? Katalina is a mess of abandonment issues and self-destruction and cunning and sensitivity being held together by sheer determination. in truth, in order to get an idea of who Katalina is, you have to look at the people who’ve been most important to her.
first, there’s Shadow Weaver. Katalina learnt early just how cruel the world could be, and she has Shadow Weaver to thank for that. this is where her more callous side was born, as well as her blunt and disrespectful attitude towards authority. after all, what has that woman ever done to earn her respect? Shadow Weaver is also a key part of why Katalina has always found herself feeling second best. the woman hated her, putting Adora on a pedestal and treating Katalina as nothing more than a worthless screw-up. that kind of thing does a number on you. Katalina eventually gave up trying, choosing to adopt a persona of laziness rather than sacrifice her pride by continuing to try and fail, but she never stopped craving the validation she was deprived of.
and then there’s Adora. everything with Adora is so… much. Adora is Katalina’s best friend, her everything. or, she was. when Adora left, the foundations of Katalina’s very existence were ripped away from her. the betrayal was two-fold; first, Adora was willing to leave her - after everything they’ve been through, after promising that it didn’t matter what anyone else did as long as they were together - for people she’d just met. second, Adora only realising the awful nature of the Horde now, because of strangers, when Katalina had been suffering their whole childhood.
to her, Adora’s choice was deeply personal, because Katalina herself has always placed personal loyalty over morality. often, morality doesn’t even factor into her thought process. she isn’t wired that way, thanks to her upbringing. essentially, Adora was the only person who ever cared about Katalina. Katalina was fine suppressing her resentment because she was just happy to have Adora with her. when she left, it broke Katalina’s heart.
now, left in a hostile environment with her primary source of safety and support gone, she’s latching onto what coping mechanisms she can. she wants power and control, so no one can ever hurt her again. she wants people to fear her, rather than push her down. deep down, she’s only ever wanted respect and agency (and Adora). this way maybe, just maybe, she’ll get the admiration and validation she seeks.
Katalina is complicated. she’s passionate and playful and rebellious. she’s also emotional and callous and downright destructive. she has so much potential, but she has a substantial amount of trauma and unhealthy coping mechanisms too.
also, she’s gay.
Second character choice
all or nothing BABY
It’s time to see that sample para.
Force Captain Katalina.
No, Force Captain Rao.
It sounded - it sounded powerful. It sounded like vindication - a laugh in the face of everyone who had ever looked down on her. Shadow Weaver, the other cadets, they couldn’t touch her now. Not if she played her cards right.
She brushed a thumb over the badge in her hands as she leant her forearms on a sink in the empty locker room. It seemed so small up close. It had been small when she’d first seen it, when it had been Adora’s and -
No.
She closed a fist around the badge, contemplative expression hardening. Adora wasn’t here. Adora didn’t want to be here. This wasn’t Adora’s achievement, not anymore. For once - for once - Katalina had been given a chance to prove herself, and Adora - Adora was gone. She left.
Katalina dug her nails into her palms, raising her gaze to meet her own eyes in the mirror. At some point, the face staring back at her had started clenching her teeth in anger. The eyes looking back at hers had started watering. She wiped at them frantically, before hot tears of anger and hurt could fall. She wouldn’t last long as Force Captain if she was fragile and emotional and crying, and -
(Adora’s not here to protect you anymore.)
She was on her own and that was fine. She was fine. She was certainly doing better than any of her fellow cadets, that was for sure. They were the ones who should be scared. So she reached into her heart and wrapped a hand around that bright burning anger and pulled it to the forefront until that all there was, until the pain of betrayal and fear for her own safety were indistinguishable from the fury that tore a ragged yell from her throat and sent a fist rocketing at the mirror until it was a shattered mess and she’d gouged scratches in the wall behind it and thrown several other things in the room for good measure.
The metal of the badge in her hand dug into her skin as she collapsed to her knees. Her knuckles were bloody, her hair even messier than normal. After a long moment, in which she did nothing but hope Shadow Weaver wouldn’t make one of her surprise visits for the sole purpose of being condescending, she pinned the badge to her shirt. She wiped at her eyes. She ran a hand through her hair. She got to her feet. She made a half-hearted attempt to neaten up some of the damage done to the room (though she couldn’t bring herself to care much and gave that up almost as soon as she’d started).
She left, and did her best to busy herself in not thinking about Adora until Shadow Weaver was ranting about bringing her back again.
Anything else, love?

Don’t Make Me Play Pretend || Self-Para
Tagging→  Blaine Anderson, Cooper Anderson, Mrs. Anderson (mentions of Rachel Berry and Kurt Hummel) Where→  Blaine’s bedroom, his apartment. When→ 10/18/19 Warnings→  n/a
“ I been doing a good job of makin' 'em think I'm quite alright But I hope I don't blink You see its easy when I'm stomping on a beat But no one sees me when I crawl back underneath “
It was nice to have an evening to himself to focus on cleaning without having to worry about drama or homework. Blaine was free to turn his music up and just tune out everything else. It was a chance to ignore the situation with Rachel (more so than he already was). He felt guilty for not texting her more or hanging out with her like they used to before the whole boyfriend/girlfriend debacle last week. At least this week he had an excuse in the form of preparations for his violin showcase. But he could no longer use that as a reason for staying away.
Kurt was right. Blaine needed to tell Rachel he wasn’t interested in her that way, before it got too far. It would only get messier from here on out. Even if Blaine wasn’t ready to tell anyone the real reason, he had no desire to be with Rachel, he needed to think of her. Halfway through folding his laundry and putting it away he realized that the time he wanted to use for himself he spent doing just what he didn’t want to do, thinking of Rachel and the things Kurt said to him. And to make matters worse, Blaine glanced over to his phone vibrating on his bedside table with Cooper’s face and name lighting up the screen.
He rolled his eyes and ignored the call. That was the last thing Blaine had the energy for. A few more seconds passed before the phone went off again. Blaine angrily folded one of his undershirts and set it aside on the bed before accepting the call and placing his brother on speaker.
“What do you want Coop?” Blaine asked in lieu of a proper, respectful, greeting.
Someone’s bowtie was tied a little too tight today.
“Coop, I’m a little busy right now so if don’t need anything-“
No! Hey, calm down. I called for a reason. I didn’t like the way we left things when I came to see you.
“You came to promote your book.” Blaine said glaring over at the phone.
Right. That was wrong, I see that now. I really did want to see my baby brother, though. I know we said some things we didn’t mean-
Blaine finished putting his socks in his top drawer and closed it a little harder than he needed to.
“Oh, I meant what I said, Coop.” Blaine replied, heated. “You only care about yourself and you’ve never once been there for me so I’d really like to know why you’re calling me right now, I have to go put towels in the dryer.”
There was silence between them for several long seconds. And when Cooper spoke again, Blaine could tell there was some restraint in the other’s voice.
That’s why I’m calling. If you would just let me talk, I could explain that. I do care about you. Of course I do, you’re my brother for crying out loud. I know I don’t show it as often as I should but I do. Whether you believe it or not, I do. That’s why it hurts when you don’t feel like you can tell me the truth. Like about your girlfriend.
Blaine froze. Did Cooper say girlfriend? His eyes grew wide and he began to stammer. “Wh—how—what are you talking about, my girlfriend?”
I wish you could feel like you were able to talk to me about things like that. Because I would like to hear them and hear about you.
“I don’t..” Blaine scoffed. “I don’t understand how do you know I have a girlfriend?”
Another long pause from Cooper’s end.
I..have my sources.
Sources? Blaine’s brow furrowed trying to quickly think of how on Earth Cooper would have found out about Rachel. Cooper didn’t manage his own social media pages and therefore wouldn’t have seen it online. Blaine sure as hell didn’t mention it to him. What sources could he—
“Are you FOLLOWING ME?” Blaine roared.
No! No! I would never have you followed. I just asked a leader of local fanbase in the area to...check on you. Audrey. Sweet girl. She goes to Ginsburg too! Small world, right?
“I..” There were no words that Blaine could form in that moment. He was too busy processing the fact that his, insane, older brother had someone spying on him.
You won’t talk to me and I’m worried about you, Blaine. She said she was in a theater class with you last year and word around campus is that you’re dating a Miss Rachel Berry.
“Cooper. You are insane! What the hell is your problem?”
My problem? Blaine. You are clearly crying out for help and I am merely trying to provide said help. Frankly, I’m happy that you have a girlfriend! I just wish you—
“You hired someone to essentially spy on me, Coop. You don’t think that’s just a little insane?”
I mean. Okay. I could see how you would think it’s a little excessive.
Blaine buried his face in his hands trying to calm down as much as he could. Furious did not cover extra how he was feeling toward Cooper in this moment. It was bad enough half of the campus knew that Blaine and Rachel were dating but now Cooper knew, and lord knows how long it would take for Cooper to tell their parents. Blaine’s head snapped up. Shit.
“Cooper, you didn’t tell mom and dad did you?” And he held his breath waiting for his brother to reply. Please say no. He thought.
Well, yeah. Of course, I did! They’re happy too, Squirt. You know, you should include us more into your life.
They’re happy too. Blaine seriously doubted that. They were hardly ever happy with Blaine’s decisions.
Should I not have told them? Is everything okay? I can help if you’re having relationship trouble.
“No!” Blaine said quickly. He sighed. “No. I’m not having relationship problems. It’s just..it wasn’t your news to tell.”
I’m sorry if I crossed any line.
“You’re sorry? Cooper you are so beyond the line that...that you basically have come up on the other side of the line.”
That doesn’t really make—
“Stop having me followed or surveyed, or whatever. Just stop!” Blaine interrupted.
Alright. Alright, hint taken. I’ll stop having her report back.
A pause, and just a little softer Cooper continued.
But Blaine…she recorded your violin showcase and I have to say, you were amazing. I’m sorry that I wasn’t there in person. I sent it to mom and dad too, I thought you’d want them to see it. You’re really good!
Blaine stood silent, staring at his phone and the anger replaced by surprise. Cooper had seen his showcase? He blinked and Blaine wasn’t sure if the tears he felt coming on were out of frustration and anger or because Cooper had genuinely praised him and something he had done. Blaine didn’t say anything and after a minute, Cooper went on.
Next time you have one of those showcase things, I’d like to get an invitation. …Blaine?
“Uh, yeah I’m still here.” His voice caught in his throat. “Sure. I’ll uhm, I’ll let you know. Thanks Coop.”
You’re welcome, Squirt. Have a good night, okay?
“Yeah. You too.” Blaine was still in shock. “Night, Coop.”
The call ended and Blaine was still standing beside his bed staring down at his phone. There was a lot to process in that call. And the whiplash of emotions that Blaine had just experienced drained him. He turned and flopped back onto his bed, ignoring the fact that some of his laundry was still there unfolded, and stared at the ceiling. He tried to remember the last time Cooper had actually complimented Blaine that didn’t also somehow manage to be a compliment on himself. Cooper had never been to any of Blaine’s performances in high school, namely because Cooper was already moved out by that time. Blaine thought on it. It was the first proper performance Cooper saw of his. And he said Blaine was amazing.
His phone buzzed again after what might have been fifteen minutes of Blaine just staring at the ceiling. Blaine rolled his eyes expecting Cooper to be calling. Instead it was a text message from his Mom.
MOM 8:03PM: We saw your showcase. You were really good, honey. Dad and I also heard you have a new girlfriend. We’d love to get to meet her. Maybe she could come back with you over the fall break? Thanksgiving, perhaps? We’d love to meet her.
MOM 8:04PM: Proud of you darling.
Proud? Proud?
Blaine blinked and reread the text multiple times making sure his brain wasn’t playing tricks on him. No, that definitely said that she was proud of him. He had heard that word a few times, but he hardly put stock into when it came from his parents. Namely because it was typically followed with the ways Blaine could continue to improve. But there was no criticism of any kind that came through after that last text.
And they wanted to meet Rachel. If he broke up with her now with no legitimate reason to give how would it appear to his family. Especially if it was so soon after they started “dating”. Disappointment. And since Blaine couldn’t leave the message without a response and his brain still doing too many things, he found himself on autopilot going through the motions.
BLAINE 8:10PM: Thanks, Mom. I can’t wait for you guys to meet her either.
And just like that it became even more complicated between him and Rachel.
And how was he going to explain this to Kurt?
