controversial art take:
using references is good and everyone should be doing it. BUT. people shouldnt be dogpiled for saying something was drawn without reference
lemme explain.
I started art doing fine art, which means I learned to copy pictures/real life super good and nothing else. after a fuck ton of practice and hard work, I got to be able to draw things using only vague references (ie a pose reference or hair or outfit and combining them). but finding a pose reference or making one in a program for Every Piece took fucking forever. so after a lot more practice and hard work, I started being able to draw things without reference.
turns out, it takes a Lot of knowledge about how things work, anatomy, material physics, light, color, perspective, etc etc to be able to draw without reference and I cant express pride over the amount of work that went into learning all of that by specifying a piece was made without references without coming off as a jackass and everyone going ‘its okay to use references >:(‘
it is absolutely okay to use references, everyone should do it, I still do it a lot, but being proud of being able to draw without them shouldnt be automatically a bad thing, and it doesnt automatically mean you’re shitting on people who Do use them
anyways, these were drawn without references and represent the cumulation of a whole lot of work and learning. sure, theyre not perfect, and ill probably start seeing glaring issues as I get better (I already see issues in every single one) but I was able to do them completely from my head and I think that’s pretty neat

Steve Harrington x Plus size!reader
Word Count: 1744 words
Warnings: Violence but not too graphic
Summary: Billy’s girlfriend reacts surprisingly to the fight between both men and ends up in hot water through the night.
———————————————————————————————————
You had seen Billy in fights before, but never this close or against little kids. He was way out of his league and you weren’t going to stand it.
At first it was just hollering at him to knock it off and get his head out of his ass, but it quickly turned into much more than that. Before you knew it, you were wrestling Billy to try and get him off of Steve Harrington but nothing was working.
In fact, it wasn’t until Max tranquilized him in the neck that Billy finally stopped his horrific attack on Steve’s face.
You were in shock, in all the time that you’d known Max, she’d never been that aggressive and take charge. It was kind of bad-ass if you were being honest.
It should have upset you.
As Billy’s girlfriend, you should have been all over him, making sure that he was okay. However, as you stared at the scene in front of you, you were more concerned with Steve.
He was laying on the floor, practically gasping for air. His face was bloodied and already starting to swell.
He did not look good at all, and it was hard not to be upset with Billy for making the other man that way when he’d only been trying to help. Normally when Billy got into fights, you didn’t have much concern for the other guy.
But there was something about watching Steve there on the ground, just rolling around in pain that snapped something in you.
He’d been protecting the kids, and it was hard not to see him as the clear victim in this whole thing.
“Oh my God! Are you okay?” You gasped, kneeling down on the floor beside him, your hands falling to each of Steve’s shoulders to position him better so that his head was in your lap.
You could tell he was out of it, but he managed a nod.
Everyone in the room was surprisingly shocked at your reaction, considering they’d been expecting you to react the same way as you initially did at first. It really didn’t make any sense that you’d care about Steve to them, because you were Billy’s girlfriend.
No one good would choose to spend all their time with a guy like Billy right? It didn’t make any sense.
“Thank God” you breathed, brushing the sweat-drenched hair from his forehead. He didn’t look good at all, covered in his own blood and bodily fluids, leaking from various wounds in his face.
Billy had really done a number on him, it was almost hard to believe...almost.
You thought you should have been content with just making sure he was alright but that didn’t seem to be enough. You knew that someone had to get him all cleaned up or he could get some nasty infection or worse.
There was no way to know what he could be exposed to in a place like Hawkins, so, without thinking about anything, you turned toward Dustin.
The young boy was understandably shook up by your sudden attention, but that was just because you two had never really interacted. Typically you were just a piece of eye-candy on Billy’s arm...none of them knew there was anything more to you.
"Do you have a first aid kit in this place?" it was a simple question but it took the boy a second to comply. He wasn't sure what you were going to do with it but little did he know, you had a lot of experience in this department.
Billy had gotten into plenty of fights in his day and you were the only person in the world who was willing to help him out. It became your job to patch him up after every single one and you had developed a talent for it.
"Go now little man" you shooed, sending him out of the room quickly that time. It was obvious that if you were going to get anything done in this point, you were going to have to use a little bit of a heavier touch.
Billy was still passed out at this point from his tranquilizer but you needed to get them all out of here before he woke up to do some damage control. He wasn't going to be in a good mood once it wore off.
By the time Dustin returned, Steve's face was swollen around his eyes and cheekbones but it was nothing a little ice and salve couldn't fix.
"Are you alright Steve? Not dizzy or anything?" you checked, momentarily worried that he may have been concussed. There could have been something serious rattled in his head but all he could do was groan back, shaking his head lightly to let you know that he wasn't, in fact, dizzy.
Satisfied that he wasn't going to need a hospital, you started working through the first aid kit Dustin brought. There were a few different creams for numbing and a whole box of dinosaur bandages. Along with that, you found a tube of neosporin that should work nicely to make sure his cuts didn't fester.
After asking Max to find a bag of frozen peas, you looked down at your handy work. You were pretty satisfied. You knew he was probably going to swell a little more and it would get worse before it got better, but he would heal.
He already looked better and he wasn't bleeding anymore, so you started getting to work on the kids, making sure they had everything they would need to get on the road and as far away from here.
"Alright, let’s get out of here before Billy comes to" you urged, hugging Max into your side carefully before letting her go. You were proud of her for sticking up for her friends, and herself. It couldn’t have been easy for her.
It took a little bit of finagling to get Steve into the car but you all managed to get it done with some teamwork and before long, you were ready to get on the road.
Maybe it was a bad idea to steal Billy’s car but it was better than waiting around for him to wake up. You had to get Steve and the kids somewhere safe and that was more important than not upsetting Billy right now.
It felt strange to be sitting in the front seat of the Camaro, seeing as Billy had never let you drive it before but you didn’t really have time to revel in it at first.
You had a task to attend to.
It wasn’t until you got a decent way down the road that you realized you had no idea how to get to Steve Harrington’s house but luckily, Dustin could be of help in that department.
He gave you the address and then had you drop them all off at Will’s house which you did happily. You needed to know that they were all safe before you could do anything.
Those kids were Steve’s top priority and seeing as he couldn’t do it, you had to step up and protect them in his place.
You pulled up to the curb of Will’s street, making sure everyone got their belongings as they left the car.
Satisfied with the job you’d done, you prepared to head to the Harrington house to get Steve all taken care of.
“Y/N, hold on one second”
But just as you were about to pull away, Dustin stopped you, rifling through his bag. He was searching for something.
When he’d finally found what he’d been looking for, he presented you with a walky-talky.
“This is Steve’s, it’s how we all communicate. Take it so we can make sure everything is alright...I have one, so does Mike, Will, and Lucas” he suggested, handing it over ceremoniously before scurrying back in the house with the others.
You couldn’t help but smile as you held the boxy little thing in your hand, thinking over how far you had come with the group over the past few hours. Before all this, they wouldn’t have even talked to you, led alone trusted you with something like this.
It was sweet.
“Y/N?” a groan from the backseat brought you back to reality, reminding you of what you were actually doing.
It was Steve, who was currently trying to sit up in the backseat, causing the bag of frozen pea to slip onto the floor. It had been resting over his eye, to keep the swelling down.
You didn’t want him to get a black eye.
“It’s me Harrington, don’t worry” you suggested, shifting the car into drive before speeding off toward his house.
Lucky for you, when you arrived there was no one home. You weren’t really in the mood to explain the whole predicament to his parents, and it made the whole thing less messy.
The least amount of people who knew about it, the better.
“Are we at my house? How do you know where I live?” he wondered, barely making out the shape of his front step through the one eye that wasn’t swollen shut.
Without a word, you held up the walky-talky Dustin had given you, explaining it all in a single motion. It all seemed to click in Steve’s head in that moment and he knew that you were trying to help.
So he let you. What was the worst that could happen?
First, you helped him into the house, with your arm around his back to help stabilize him so he could walk to the door. Then, you set him up on the couch with his head back against one of his mother’s feather down pillows.
“You comfortable?” you asked, adjusting his position so he was sitting up better, not noticing how close your two faces are to one another.
There wasn’t really anything going on between the two of you. Still, he could get in a lot of trouble with Billy Hargrove’s girlfriend in his house.
“Yeah, I think I’m alright” he answered, those eyes keeping you locked in place. You felt like you were stuck where you were standing, with your face an inch from his.
You were in way too deep with Harrington at this point, but luckily before you could do anything, Dustin’s voice rang out through the walky.
“You two aren’t dead right?”
If only he knew how very much alive you were feeling.
