Friendly note/reminder that Þorrablót, in its original context, has no verifiable link to Þórr in name or practice. Etymologically, "Þorra-" is the genitive form of "Þorri", both the name of one of the months on the Old Icelandic and (likely) Old Norse calendars and a personal name meaning "frozen snow". A being by the name of Þorri, either personifying the month itself or appearing as a sort of Old Man Winter, may have been worshiped during this time. Þorrablót, then, means "Sacrifice of Þorri", whereas the equivalent for Þórr would be "Þórsblót".
It's not totally clear whether the month itself or the personified figure was the major focus of Þorrablót, but in either case the claim that Þorrablót is a feast in honor of Þórr is a result of a poor understanding of the name and its etymology. The modern revival of Þorrablót was initiated by Danish university students during the 19th century who may well have misunderstood the festival's name, and this misunderstanding has been further proliferated through organizations such as The Ásatrú Community in more recent decades.
Of course a person can make offerings to Þórr at this time if they wish, but Þorrablót itself is not a historically designated time for it.

15 days of Thor devotion ⚡ sacred days and holidays.
Technically Thor can be celebrated any time but here are some specific times.
Thursday is named after Thor.
There's thorrablot, a holiday celebrated in Iceland with parties and a feast. Officially Thor wasn't a part of this celebration, it's named after a month. takes place Jan 14.
Thor is celebrated on midsummer/summer solstice ☀️
May day is also a time Thor is honored. (Though it's more of Thor a time Freyr and Freyja)🌱
Yule ☃️

Today is thorrablot so I'm going to honor Thor by lighting a candle on my altar for him, eating a charcuterie board, drinking whiskey, and playing board games with my wife.
Frankly I can think of no better way to honor Thor than by eating well, drinking well, and playing games with loved ones.
(I mean maybe I could work out or something but that's not going to happen today and I did some stretching so that's got to count for something)

HAPPY THORRABLOT, 2018!
Tumblr media
Today, January 23rd 2018 is Bóndadagur, also known as Farmer’s Day in Iceland! It’s also the first day of Þorri, a month denoting midwinter, though technically the icelandic month actually began on the 19th if Im not mistaken. Now, I’m no expert (see: shitty hobbyist) but as far as I know, it’s a day referencing both Orkneyinga saga and the Hversu Noregr byggðist, in which Þorri Snærsson (King Winter) is described in a semi-mythical account.
In Iceland it’s customary for the man of the house (known as the ‘bóndinn’) on the morning of Bóndadagur to run outside in only a shirt with one leg-in-pant and one out, jumping up and down on one leg. He’s gotta greet Þorri and bid him welcome. Othewise, well... I really don’t know. Outside of that particular tradition then there is Þorrablót to look forward to, or the midwinter feast.
As a side note, some modern pagans may also take it as a reference to the god Thor. While I’m not sure how correct this is historically speaking, Þorrablót is nonetheless an opportunity to celebrate the Gods and welcome them respectfully into your home.
Here are some ways that you can celebrate, if you so choose —
Try some traditional icelandic dishes, like svið, blóðmör or hákarl. Most of the old-style cuisine for Icelanders had to be preserved somehow, so you’ll find a lot of it is either smoked or dried. While not everyone may be capable of this, I’ve included some recipes nonetheless!
Drinking and dancing. I will be having apple juice, but mead also comes highly recommended. Triple bonus points if you also offer some to the Gods.
Try rereading the Sagas. Or, if you have friends around, try reading some of your favorite heathen stories aloud and/or retelling them from memory. It’s okay if you mess a few of the details up. The most important thing is your participation in a rich and longstanding oral tradition.
Pamper your partner. Technically Bóndadagur is also known as “men’s day” in Iceland, but I don’t really go for gendered holidays so this is just a great chance to spend one-on-one romantic time with your lover. Try taking a walk. Do some netflix and chill. Go out to eat somewhere. Talk shit and have a LAN party. You know. Cherish one another, however that looks to you.
Spend some time alone with nature, especially if you happen to be in a place with snow and/or frost. Take a long walk. Raise up a (biodegradeable) offering somewhere. This may also be a wonderful opportunity to spend time with a winter or ice-coded deity, such as Ullr, Skaði, Gerðr or any of the other hrímþursar.
Sacrifice something. Technically Þorrablót is a sacrificial holiday. While that bit is largely edited out of most modern celebration, the sacrifice does not have to be literal. Something like a bad habit, an unhealthy attachment or a relationship can be trimmed back, clearing the way for new growth. Offering these things to the Gods can be a way of honoring them—showing a willingness to work and improve oneself is an integral part of Heathenry and worship in general. Just be sure to be mindful of any oath you choose to make!
Happy Holiday and enjoy! I hope this year is kinder than the last, but still not as kind as the next one. ❄️

The Icelandic midwinter festival Thorrablot is fast approaching. On January 20th Icelanders will indulge in "unusual" culinary delicacies such as rotten shark’s meat, boiled sheep’s head and congealed sheep’s blood wrapped in ram’s stomach. Mmm... mouth watering.
