I Finally Popped My Shoulder

was anyone else not exactly a nintendo kid but a nintendo adjacent kid? because before i got my own ds i spent so many years (jealously) watching over my cousin’s shoulder as he played pokemon alpha sapphire and zelda and apparently the same thing happened with my friend and her older sister so im curious as to whether this is a common experience

thinking again about dangly ropes now that it was brought up in my brain but specifically thinking about ndrv3 which has somehow surpassed sdr2 in like every aspect in my head (tho sdr2 still has my fave memes........ haha, memes, the anime was such a hot mess but the memes were good—)

ndrv3 is just such a good game to end the entire series on. its literally a game that tells you everything is up to you at the end, truth or lies, illogical or logic, magic or tricks, whether you want its world to continue or not, but either way, for the characters living in it, it's book end and they're moving on to who knows what. its literally that one post about that specific kinda media where the world is out of the audience's hands.

everyone's said the scrodinger's dangly ropes joke a thousand times when discussing ndrv3's ending but that really is what it is............ and goshhhh i love it for that, the writer in me looooovessssss that!!

HEADCANON // IRMINSUL & MEMORIES

Because of Sylvie's birth circumstances and the inherent connection between Dendro and Irminsul—noted to be the root of Dendro itself—Sylvie is semi-sensitive to the ebb and flow of information with Irminsul, especially with things getting altered. This does not mean they keep memories that have gotten overwritten / erased, but they are aware of something having changed. Akin to like when you enter a room and remember that you forgot something, but for the life of you, you cannot tell what it is.

They can sift through Irminsul memories and look through information themselves, but because Irminsul / Leylines are of the Human Realm—and although they've acclimated to it, they are still a creature of the Light Realm—to them there is a sense of weirdness and discomfort in doing it and actively avoid it. It both feels familiar yet foreign, so more often than not they'll avoid interacting with things tied to Leylines unless they need to ( since there is no strain in doing so, the amount of elemental flow and energy within Leylines is nothing that'd overwhelm them ).

Because of that, they have not opted to look into why they have the sensation of change, though it definitely is a thing that bothers them when they sense it because they can never put a proper finger on it. Unlike Nahida, they've not made any contingency plans to 'save' memories in more abstract ways, but may consider looking into after feeling the odd sensation of loss twice in a very short span of time, especially since they may go to Nahida to discuss it ( and it may be likely that discussion of history changes could come up because of the inherent connection they both have to Irminsul, confirming their theory that there are gaps and alterations in their own memories ).

Sylvie truthfully is / was not aware of this functionality of the Irminsul—because of their general aversion of it—until this Archon Quest, bringing into question the validity of their own memories and perhaps causing them to pre-plan ahead of time for any future changes, wanting to document their own, current memories in hopes to avoid losing more. Of course, they'll still need a nudge from someone like the traveller, but this way, memories will be preserved.

I have also felt it unnecessary to know someone's <insert identity label here>, unless it's an important aspect of the person that they want to project to the world (and so therefore respectful to address appropriately), what does it matter? (Some people have answers for this, if it isn't some form of 'MY religion', or 'I might have been "tricked" into wanting to bonk them otherwise', it'll be a new one to me).

And I'm sure people appreciate the IDGAF attitude, it's perfect for how I live my "non-professional" life :)

My elderly father started talking about how frustrating he finds “the pronouns thing” and I was like. Oh no. He had such a good stand on this, he’s been they/them-ing his cishet siblings for god’s sake! Is he regressing?? And he was talking about how difficult it is to remember, and how onerous it feels to expect strangers to keep track of it, and I’m like oh no oh no.

Then he says, “I mean, the problem isn’t the gender thing. The problem is four words: she, her, he, and him. We got rid of stewardess and turned it into flight attendant. It doesn’t matter if the flight attendant is a man or woman, so we got rid of it. We just need to get rid of those. I don’t need to know.”

“You don’t need to know… people’s gender?”

“No. I don’t care, I don’t need to know, and I don’t want to remember it.”

So we can relax. It’s just a continuation of his crusade to they/them the world. He doesn’t want to remember anyone’s gender. He’s abolishing the genders.

And here’s 2023! I started this year having no experience how to draw mews or backgrounds and I ended it with knowing quite a bit! It’s been interesting to start the year from scratch artistically, as I mostly focused on humans and lineart up this point ;3

(this place is soooooooooooooooo gorgeous i loooooveeeeee it also its really a treat after suffering through (almost) 100% fontaine map exploration, like yessss after all that swimming and running around i get to enjoy a truly nice and scenic place all to my own preference!!!!!!!!!!!!!

also um this crack is very pretty and also very entertaining to me considering the first thing that comes to mind when i see this crack is:

also the implication that teyvat after a great cataclysm looks similar to what that area is like............ oh my god the thonkies i have for my tol toni, considering She journeyed through a teyvat after a great cataclysm - which would essentially correspond to a cataclysm/end as per jakob's world formula

tho i specifically hc that she returned to teyvat when it was in a "transition" state, from utter annihilation to rebuilding into an empty slate for the next iteration of history. as such everything was in dead ruins but there was still land and very, very few people around. which could still fit the lore provided during the quest, i just gotta update visuals in my own head for it lol)

Hi Ashe, love your stuff. You mentioned finding a typing layout that won't lead to long term strain? I'm primed to face similar wrist-related injuries in my future, and I was curious if you'd be willing to share? (No pressure if not!)

Okay, this got really long so I'm gonna append it under a read more for everyone's sake.

tldr; arm and hand angle while typing are very important. also stretching!! additionally, paying very close attention to how you use your wrists in all aspects of your life, not just while typing.

It's been a while since I rehashed this, but just for the sake of everyone who wasn't here in 2020: one major reason I stopped writing and posting Pearlina fanfic was because I had repetitive strain injuries in both of my wrists and had to basically stop writing for a year.

My writing speed is high; I'm not saying this to brag, just to illustrate. My WPM is 90 and I can do 2k words in an hour on a good day. Because I was so inspired, I was writing a lot and I was writing quickly, and, as a result, I basically injured myself badly enough to get my ass benched for a full calendar year.

Of course, you can do this to yourself if you have a slower writing speed. Listen to your body! If you wrist hurts, stop.

This time around, I've been troubleshooting. I have three keyboards: a mechanical, a split mechanical (a keyboard that's basically two big pieces, cut right down the middle), and one of my most behated Apple butterfly switch monstrosities. I've slowly rotated between the three as my wrist pain has gotten worse.

Wrist alignment matters. I write at work when I'm not busy, and I realized that I don't end up in pain there. Why? The keyboard is angled down and the travel distance between the keys is very low.

Unfortunately, I've discovered that my ideal typing setup to avoid strain is to use the awful Apple keyboard with very little travel distance between the keys. Because of the butterfly switches, I don't have to press down hard on the keys either. I miss my thonky click clack keyboards every day, but since switching, I've had more days without pain than I have in a while. I also got a new desk that sits lower so my arms are at a natural resting position.

I still have to take whole days where I can't use a keyboard. It's a struggle, but it's getting better. I've also realized that my left wrist, which is the one most prone to strain, is the one that I use to prop myself up with the most, like when I brush my teeth or get up off the couch. It's def worth paying attention to when you're not sitting at your desk.

Of course, stretch, stretch, stretch! Also, it can't hurt to get a 2 pound weight and do some strengthening exercises. This is not medical advice, but my doctor told me to grip the weight and lift it using just my wrist. This will strengthen the tendon that runs through the wrist and make it less prone to strain.
