Happy birthday Lena Martell, born May 15th 1940 in Possilpark, Glasgow.

Born Helena Thomson, she began singing at the age of 11 with her eldest brother’s band. After his untimely death, Martell decided to pursue a career in music as a tribute.

Her rising popularity among the easy listening elite allowed for the release of Lena’s Music Album in 1979. The record spawned a number one hit, One Day at a Time, written by Kris Kristofferson and Marijohn Wilkin, it helped launch Lena’s career. Producer and bandleader George Elrick and Martell continued to release records throughout the 1980s, she recorded more than 30 albums, some of which went silver, gold and platinum, including By Request, Beautiful Sunday , Love Songs, and Feelings, before her retirement in the early ‘90s, for a decade Lena also had her own Saturday night BBC TV show with over 12 million viewers. Lena worked with Liza Minnelli and understudied for Barbra Streisand in Funny Girl on Broadway.

She has been through a lot in the years since her hey day, She almost lost her voice with cancerous nodes, has had a double mastectomy, had two nervous breakdowns and the death of her mum after caring for her through the ravages of Alzheimer’s, she has also had surgery to replace a valve in her heart, and in March 2008 underwent a triple heart bypass operation- Lena is really one of life’s survivors.

In 2004, her comeback CD My Homeland outsold Kylie Minogue and Britney Spears in Scottish record shops and went gold.

In 2012 she celebrated 50 years in show business with a tour that kicked off in Glasgow. Sean Connery quoted at the Edinburgh Festival in 2004; “The best singer not to record a Bond soundtrack was Lena Martell”

How One Show is Changing an Industry

The rise of streaming services, specifically Netflix, has brought an increase in LGBT (Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender) representation in film & television. Films such as Call Me By Your Name, Atypical, and Elite have all addressed LGBT topics and relationships. However, not all shows are made equal, and many LGBT-themed shows feature inaccurate stereotypes, over-sexualization of gay relationships, and often exclude transgender individuals. These misrepresentations damage the LGBT community because it affects how the mostly straight population views the community, making it harder for straight people to understand non-straight people. One show recently released on Netflix, Heartstopper, has begun to change how LGBT topics are addressed in television, taking a different, and much-welcomed, approach to representation.

Heartstopper originally started out as a series of graphic novels created by Alice Oseman, with the novels later being adapted into the hit Netflix show of the same name. To understand why this show has had such an impact, we must analyze how it does away with typical stereotypes of the gay community. One way Heartstopper achieves this is by including transgender individuals in the show, as well as in the graphic novel series. Transgender representation is especially important when discussing LGBT representation because the trans community is critically underrepresented in the media.

This is due to a variety of reasons from politics to social norms surrounding the trans community, and while representation has gotten better in recent years as transgenderism is more accepted, it is still lacking when compared to gay, lesbian, and bisexual representation. This lack of representation can lead to trans individuals being “stereotyped or overly negatively portrayed” (Thomson, 2021) more often than their lesbian, gay, and bisexual counterparts because they are not as well understood.

In the show, the main trans representation comes from the character Elle, who transitioned from male to female and is part of the core friend group in the show. The show does not, however, solely focus on Elle being trans, as so many representations of transgenderism in the media seem to do. Instead, an emphasis on her close friendship with Tao and befriending of Tara and Darcy shows how Elle being transgender is not the sole defining characteristic about her, but rather just one part of who she is. When the topic of her gender does come up, it is used to address how one of her teachers had been transphobic during her transition, reminding us of the fact that although trans acceptance has come a long way, not everybody views it positively. In short, Elle being trans is not what defines her, and her character is not solely centered around that. Heartstopper breaks away from other portrayals of trans people by portraying Elle as a normal person who just happens to be trans, which is something that can connect with the show’s transgender audience.

Heartstopper also depicts gay relationships differently than other shows, focusing less on drama and toxicity and shining a light on the good parts of a relationship. Emphasizing the good aspects of a relationship is vital because TV has “the power to shape people’s perceptions” (Thomson, 2021) and if all people see are toxic gay relationships on TV, they might be inclined to think that is how gay relationships are in real life. In the Netflix show Elite, gay couples are depicted as constantly fighting, cheating, being dramatic, etc. In Heartstopper, more importance is placed on communication in relationships and how communicating can help them evolve and grow stronger.

An example of this can be found in the relationship between Tara and Darcy, a lesbian couple who befriends Elle and the rest of the main friend group. The two have a heartfelt conversation about Tara’s experience after coming out on social media and how people viewed Tara as a different person after she came out. The main characters, Nick and Charlie, also have multiple mature, heartfelt conversations throughout the show. The inclusion of these conversations and the emphasis on open communication in young relationships, especially young LGBT relationships where people must deal with increased judgement, is an important and often under-discussed aspect of representation. Young characters are often depicted as immature, not capable of talking through issues or bottling everything up inside. Displaying these relationships with strong communication, as well as facing problems that young LGBT people face, such as coming out or dealing with bullying, can be encouraging to those dealing with such issues in their lives. This focuses on the idea of people responding well to seeing persons like them on-screen. Seeing characters go through the same struggles you’ve gone through can be comforting and make a person feel seen, while simultaneously giving other people a better understanding of the group being represented.

The actors who play Charlie, Elle, and Nick are also representative of their character’s sexualities. Yasmin Finney, who plays Elle, is transgender herself. Joe Locke, playing the role of Charlie, is gay, and Kit Connor, playing Nick Nelson, is bisexual. This not only adds another layer of positive representation by having actual LGBT people act as LGBT characters but also adds to the authenticity of the show. The actors can connect more with the roles they play because they have personal connections to those roles, as opposed to having heterosexual people act as LGBT characters.

In addition to the topics mentioned already, Heartstopper represents an especially important topic for most LGBT people: coming out to their family and friends. The show addresses coming out a few times throughout the series. The first is when Charlie talks about how he was accidentally outed by one of his friends, something that many young gay people worry about, and can be a big reason why they may choose not to come out. The show shows how Charlie was able to find refuge with one of his teachers, where he went to eat lunch in the classroom when the bullying was bad. This again is one of the many examples of the show displaying real struggles and experiences LGBT people face that other shows do not focus on.

The second instance is when Nick Nelson, Charlie’s boyfriend and one of the main characters in Heartstopper, comes out as bisexual to his mom in the last episode. Coming out can be a difficult and scary event for many LGBT people, even more so if a person knows it will not be received well by friends and family. Nick’s journey of exploring his sexuality, from anxiety over developing feelings for Charlie to his eventual coming out, is a great example of an accurate coming out story that viewers can relate to. It does away with stereotypes about coming out being a big announcement to the world and parents reacting negatively when their kid tells them they are gay, although negative reactions do happen. We get an insight into what it can be like to figure out your sexuality, with one scene in particular showing Nick taking an “am I gay?” quiz and later stumbling upon a video explaining what bisexuality is. This journey can connect on a personal level with part of the audience who are going through the struggles Nick faced. It also helps break down the stigma of bisexuality being “just a phase,” a stereotype that has become too familiar when discussing the topic. This is further reinforced by showing Nick’s friends being supportive of his journey and explaining how they discovered their own identities as well.

In a world of stereotypes and misrepresentation, Heartstopper presents a change in representation for the LGBT community. The show portrays young LGBT relationships not as some completely different thing than straight relationships, but rather capable of being mature and full of communication. It has given a platform to multiple LGBT actors, who can use the show and its positive attitude to help shape the film industry and provide meaningful representation for the community. There is still a lot of progress to be made, but with Heartstopper, representation in TV for the LGBT community is finally becoming more accurate and fulfilling.

 Happy birthday Lena Martell, born May 15th 1940 in Possilpark, Glasgow.

Born Helen Thomson, she began singing at the age of 11 with her eldest brother's band. After his untimely death, Martell decided to pursue a career in music as a tribute.

Her rising popularity among the easy listening elite allowed for the release of Lena's Music Album in 1979. The record spawned a number one hit, a polished interpretation of Kris Kristofferson's "One Day at a Time," that helped launch the singer's career. Producer and bandleader George Elrick and Martell continued to release records throughout the 1980s, she recorded more than 30 albums, some of which went silver, gold and platinum, including By Request, Beautiful Sunday , Love Songs, and Feelings, before her retirement in the early '90s, for a decade Lena also had her own Saturday night BBC TV show with over 12 million viewers. Lena worked with Liza Minnelli and understudied for Barbra Streisand in Funny Girl on Broadway.

She has been through a lot in the years since her hey day, She almost lost her voice with cancerous nodes, has had a double masectomy, had two nervous breakdowns and the death of her mum after caring for her through the ravages of Alzheimer's, Lena is really one of life's survivors.

In 2004, her comeback CD My Homeland outsold Kylie Minogue and Britney Spears in Scottish record shops and went gold, how proud are we Scots of our homegrown talent!

In this version, he's called Hiccough, which is an old-fashioned way of saying hiccup.   Astrid (Race to the Edge) as Jane. She starts off, hunting for dragons, and ends up protecting dragons. Alvin the Treacherous (Riders of Berk) as Clayton Rouge Whispering Death (Riders of Berk) as Sabor. She has the dragon equivalent to rabies. The White Bewilderbeast as Kerchek. Unvaccinated Sperm…the New Gold

It was only a matter of time before some group capitalized on unvaccinated sperm that’s free from Covid contamination.   Cue up:  The world’s first unvaccinated dating service in Hawaii.   Online dating in Hawaii has upped its game with participants being asked the “deal-breaking” question: Are you vaccinated?   At the height of the Covid madness and faced with discrimination and censorship, many unvaccinated people lost jobs and relationships because they chose to remain unvaccinated. And the “un-jabbed” didn’t have the option to say they were unvaccinated” to potential online dating partners. But that’s what prompted businesswomen, moms, and best friends, Shelby Thomson and Heather Pyle of Maui, Hawaii to launch “Unjected,” a dating app for the unvaccinated, on the Google and Apple stores. And soon after its launch Thomson and Pyle started receiving hate emails, then negative publicity in the media. Apple decided to remove “Unjected” from the app store, claiming it provided medical disinformation. Now that is unadulterated censorship. But it shouldn’t surprise anyone who’s been paying attention. Unvaccinated Sperm Database?   Thomson said “Unjected” is more than a dating service for the unvaccinated. It’s also a blood bank database and a fertility bank for the unvaccinated. Which makes perfect sense, if you’re having surgery to have access to blood that’s unvaccinated.   And although Unjected was faced with a Pandemic of Censorship from the Medical Tyranny Boyz, they managed to succeed.   And like everything else, it’s about making choices from coercion. And it’s giving new meaning to dating in the Roaring 2020s.       All kidding aside, this is a great victory against the Medical Tyranny that was simultaneously launched with the CoronaHoax. But we’re not out of the woods yet. Why? Apparently, it takes nearly three years for "the masses" to "wake up." And it’s no wonder the self-anointed elites consider the masses expendable. As a result, the masses waking up is worrisome to the techno-tyrant Boyz in the “Club.” Because now they have to change their game plan from deadly pandemic to extra-terrestrial alien attack…coming to a theater near you soon. Think I’m kidding? Then ask yourself why are we being conditioned to F-16s shooting down random UFO’s and/or Balloons up in Alaska? It’s called “preparing the Sheeple for WW3”. Moto-x Hill....

Rooty, muddy, sandy, rocky loose and torn to bits by moto-x riders - this tiny section of the magnificent GR36 has been my nemesis for the 12 years I have lived here, until today!

A combination of ‘good’ conditions,  27.5x3″ rubber, 34x42 gear and the superb handling characteristics of my Jones SWB Plus spaceframe and truss fork worked in my favour today.  I managed this terrible 1 km of trail without resorting to dabbing my feet or hike-a-biking.  I pedalled all the way to the top! As unimportant as it might seem (in the grand scheme of things) I am stoked!

It also meant that I rode the 38km off road trail without once putting my feet down! - just pedalling all the way.  The way it should be! :-)
