Pocahontas (1995)
tiny meta under the cut
i just think it's a lil fucked up, right? it;s just a little insane that these are the only two times in the entire film that john ever addresses thomas first. all of their other interactions, thomas is the one talking, and john is reacting. these two times are the only exception and both times are related to gun safety. that's fucking wild to me.
thomas is starring in his own movie alongside the rest of the action. it's a love story and a tragedy and for thomas he's experiencing the charlie sheen arc from platoon. he's losing innocence and he doesn't have a guide. he's caught between his own barnes and elias in a battle for his soul. he's just experienced what it is to actually kill a man. he's even got a green fuckign beret.
the first casualty of war is innocence and all that. thomas, the worm has certainly turned for you

I noticed in your chibi drawing that you added Pocahontas' son, Thomas. Do you have a story for him? If so do you mind sharing a little bit?
I don't have a story for him quite yet, I'm working on one for the Dancing Princesses Crossover though as Pocahontas is one of the Twelve. And since everyone else's kids were in there I thought it was only fair to include him too.
Still working on which kids will actually play any big parts in the narrative, some of them will probably only be cameos to establish time frame/where the characters are in life at the time the story starts to happen.

So when exactly did it came a time for Kaokee did get along with her own Half-Brothers despite the Said Siblings have only the same Mom but Different Fathers?
I assume that it was once a Sour but then turned to Sweet relationship, right?
Tumblr media
Well Kaokee shares the historical timeline with Thomas. So in this version of events—- since we don’t have a lot of archival material on her. John Rolfe abandoned Thomas to his brother to look after. After all, marriage to Pocahontas was for publicity to the royals that “savages could be civilized” since she converted. Now she was dead and he’s already lost two wives now— he remarried— and left Thomas. Since being a “haft-bred” is not a cool thing to be back then.
Thomas is treated more like an anomaly since there aren’t many like him. He feels like an outsider. He gets word of his father’s death at James Town and agrees to go and see the place form himself when he was old enough. Plus his native grandpa did leave him some land for him to return to. He knows precious little about the tribe, but is eager to know.
Kaokee was raised by her grandpa after her dad was murdered trying to save Pocahontas from being taken away. When he passed away she was raised by her great uncle who was preparing her for the role as leader. When she was old enough she lead the charge in James Town and killed many people. Including John Rolfe.
By the time Thomas came in the settlement was still making repairs and updates. He bumped into his step mother who did manage to escape from the attack and told him what happened. But Thomas was still curious about the tribe he was related to. He knew it was dangerous, but he had to try. Since even now he felt like he had a foot in two worlds he didn’t belong in. So the first time he met Kaokee she tried to kill him. But was paused when it began to rain. Thomas didn’t understand it then, but to her, their mother was in the rain. She brought him back where everyone greeted Thomas. Some more warmly than others. For he was still a son of Pocahontas. But it wasn’t perfect. Eventually he found out about the attack being lead by Kaokee herself and she killed his father. Thomas didn’t know how to feel about it. The man was estranged from him, but he was his father…. Could he really turn away from Kaokee?
So instead Thomas accepted the gift of land from their late grandfather. He’d still accept Kaokee as family, but he couldn’t live among them. He’d have to make this journey alone. Kaokee for once felt sad, but she knew she couldn’t take back what she had done.
As for Turner, he came from a completely different timeline. So neither really knew what to think of him since he didn’t suffer the slings and arrows of the past like they did.

oh! What if the reader joins Eric on one of his voyages and accidentally falls overboard? How would Eric react?
Tumblr media
[•] it happened so fast one moment you were on the ship and the next a big wave knocked you off the ship sending you plummeting into the water
[•] a pit would form in his stomach as he ran over towards the railing, where you’d fallen into the water and would start calling out for you
[•] causing the other sailors to quickly figure out the situation. his heart would be pounding against his chest as he scanned the water for any sign of you
[•] until there was a break on the surface and you broke the surface. struggling to stay up in the water as waves crashed into you pulling you under
[•] he shouted for the crew to tie a rope around something to they could toss the other end into the water to pull her up
[•] but they needed to do something now or you would drown. Your arms started to become tired even with the adrenaline you started to falter and could barely keep afloat
[•] Eric the entire time would be a wreck worried and panicking despite trying to keep calm b
[•] too much time had passed and he needed to take this into his own hands. so he quickly tied the rope around his waist (think of that scene that John Smith did in Pocahontas to save Thomas)
[•] the moment he finally got you in his arms, and once back on soild ground started doing CPR getting the water out of your lungs after a bit more panic sank in as you weren’t coughing up water and started to think that you were gone
[•] *cough up water* he breathed a sigh of relief and watched as coughed up water and he immediately wrapped his arms around you pulling you closer to his chest and kissing your forehead
[•] begging you not to scare him like that again despite you not wanting to get any special treatment he basically ordered you to get some rest
[•] so how would eric react he’d be a wreck

Disclaimer: Keep in mind, I'm counting ONLY the Walt Disney Animation Studios line-up.
Okay, I had to snip a few corners towards the end, but here's my criteria:
the song in question has to be about the MAIN COUPLE
the song has to be sung by one or both of the romantically-involved characters, OR:
the song has to be sung ABOUT the characters in their presence
I also wanted to include as much variety as possible, since several of these songs are beautiful, but less popular than recent ones.
Happy voting! ❤
Side-note: I also technically cut several "looser" examples (listing them below to cover my bases):
"Love is a Song That Never Ends" from Bambi (opening credits)
Basically ANY romantic song from the Package-Era films, which is a LOT
"A Most Befuddling Thing" from The Sword in the Stone (about the one-sided attraction between Arthur and the lovesick squirrel)
"My Own Home" from The Jungle Book
"Thomas O'Malley Cat" from The Aristocats (more like O'Malley bragging about himself/flirting with Duchess)
"Tomorrow is Another Day" from The Rescuers (romantic imagery, but more a soft pop song in the background)
"Natural Attraction" from The Fox and the Hound
"Let Me Be Good to You" from The Great Mouse Detective (..... look, it SLAPS, but it's from a burlesque show)
"Heaven's Light/Hellfire" from The Hunchback of Notre Dame (both songs are sung about the romantic feelings for Esmeralda, except both are unrequited, and the latter is............. well.....)
"Strangers Like Me" from Tarzan (there's ..... one or two stanzas about Tarzan's Feels for Jane, but the song is mostly about his character arc)
"Ma Belle Evengeline" from The Princess and the Frog
"Love is an Open Door" from Frozen (this one is Complicated™)
"Lost in the Wood" from Frozen 2 (honestly, I just ran out of room 😭)
And look.... I HAD to count "If I Never Knew You!" It was cut from the theatrical release, yes, but they eventually animated it and stuck it into an anniversary DVD, so! It! Counts! That song never should have been cut, it's so gorgeous 😭

Disney princes/princesses I keep imagining have siblings (even though they don't canonically)
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Prince Florian (the prince from "Snow White and the 7 Dwarves"; not his official name, but he's been marketed with this name before and I like it) really gives off a "third son of the king" that you read in fairy tales" vibe to me for some reason.
When Aladdin was feeding the kids in poverty with the loaf of bread that he stole, I kept imagining him being an older brother being the parent figure to his younger siblings, trying to make sure they can all survive.
Belle had older sisters in one of her earlier concepts followed by a younger sister in a later concept. It would've been interesting to see her as a big sister; I can totally imagine her trying to act like a mom to her younger siblings.
Perhaps it's due to Pocahontas' relationship with Nakoma and John Smith's relationship with Thomas, but I could see both of them having siblings (close in age to them, probably younger in John's case).
Mulan did have a younger brother (and I think an older sister) in original retellings, and the historical vibes the film goes for makes it hard for me not to imagine her coming from a larger family. Same goes for Shang with a younger brother.
Tiana feels like in a similar boat to Aladdin where I imagine her looking after younger siblings and part of her motivation is making sure they're alright (though she they have the benefit of having a parent).
Raya feels like she should have siblings, perhaps I'm getting this based on her dynamics with Boun and Noi. Again, she gives big sister vibes.

I have a question about your next generation ocs
How did you make the ocs and where did you even get the names, age and appearances?
By the way, I love summer and your art style.
✨The origins of Disney NextGen✨
Settle in kiddies
I’d always kind of been coming up with the hypothetical children of Disney characters since forever; the first original designs of the characters tho were for a Modern AU type world which made a lot of differences from the designs you see today.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Some of the original ideas :
Cheyenne; daughter of John smith and Pocahontas and half sister or Jonathan (aka, Thomas Rolfe)
Rapunzel was going to have two daughters (Lilly and Blume) instead of twins (Heidi and Finn)
Summer was going to be an only child (no Axel)
Hercules kids were just gonna be three; twins boys and one very young daughter instead Macaria being 14 and having three older brothers (twin thing stayed tho)
Had a love story between Cedric (Cinderella’s son) and Gusto who was Gaston’s son (character changed to Gabriel)
Juliana was gonna be named Tonya or Talia, Lian was gonna be named Asumi and Adrian was gonna be named Arrison?
There’s probably a dozen more you’ll notice that I haven’t added…
I attempted a digital version of the modern characters…
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
But ended up scrapping it due to not liking my art style that much during that time (bit of a perfectionist if haven’t noticed).
I kept the characters in mind constantly changing small things until eventually I was at a point where my art style was good (in my opinion) and worked the characters into a more in universe adaption which I think worked out better.
I do plan on making a Modern Au of the Disney NextGen characters I’ve made and even their parents and see them all interact.

POCAHONTAS LIVE REACTION BABEYYY!!!
Note: The last time I watched this movie, I was a wee little babe. So I guess I'll be in for a wild ride.
——————————————————————————————
Damn, so many people kissing in just one or two scenes. Good for them, I guess, considering they might not see each other again.
——————————————————————————————
Pfft- Did I just see a background character carrying a pig? I wonder who among the crew owned that pig.
——————————————————————————————
*John Smith jumps into a stormy ocean to save Thomas.*
"ARE YOU CRAZY!?"
Most relatable line I've ever heard. Thank you, nameless side character.
——————————————————————————————
"You'd do the same for me"
Nah, man. They wouldn't be able to do acrobatics like you do.
——————————————————————————————
Damn, the first actual introduction of the villain, Governor Ratcliffe, and the first thing I'm greeted with is the god-awful angle of his nose holes staring back at me.
——————————————————————————————
Wait a minute, is this dude wearing lavender eyeshadow?? Damn, good for him. Wish I could pull that off.
——————————————————————————————
Oh damn, I keep forgetting this movie is racist. I remembered it so differently.
——————————————————————————————
It has very pretty visuals though.
——————————————————————————————
First intro of Pocahontas and the bitch be smoldering into the distance with the wind flowing through her hair. What a woman.
——————————————————————————————
Pocahontas: *high dives off a cliff into the water.*
The female best friend of the protagonist: "Show-off"
You took the words right off my mouth, nameless character number 2. Show-off indeed.
——————————————————————————————
Pfft-
"I especially love his smile"
*Shows character with a serious face.*
Another relatable line.
——————————————————————————————
Damn, this bitch is absolutely fearless. Just kayaks herself off a raging waterfall and narrowly avoiding the large rocks in her path.
——————————————————————————————
"Men like Smith, don't they?"
Well, I mean "like" as in admire or "like" as in a gay way? Cuz either way, it's probably a yes.
"I've never been... Popular."
Gee, I wonder why. Also Wiggins is so adorable man. Wtf.
——————————————————————————————
The way he says "success will be mine at last" is so weird, is it just me?
——————————————————————————————
Damn, this whole time, I thought the old shaman like person with the chief was an old woman with a really deep voice.
Awkward...
——————————————————————————————
How many times have I already seen this guy's nostrils? 5, 8 times? Seriously, I like Governor Ratcliffe, but even I'm getting tired of him hautily raising his chin up to show off his second set of eyes.
——————————————————————————————
Ngl, I kinda like how this girl be slowly creepin' like a graceful spider of sorts while stalking a man.
Wish I could do that without looking stupid and dumb.
——————————————————————————————
Bruh. Guy loads a flintlock pistol and jumps through a waterfall. How is that thing still loaded? How is it gonna shoot??
——————————————————————————————
Ok, this bitch has serious plot armor. She just met the guy and heard him speak english a couple of times once, and already she can speak english because she "listened with her heart."
Is that what I have to do in order to understand math now?
——————————————————————————————
Pfft- I'm getting Avatar vibes from this whole interaction with Pocahontas and John Smith.
The big blue alien Avatar that is.
——————————————————————————————
Ugghhh. I'm cringing so hard. John Smith is digging his own grave. Stop dissing her people and culture in front of her man. That's so ick.
——————————————————————————————
Yea gurl! Pop off in musical!! Beat that boy's small minded view in song!!! Eviscerate that man's perception of reality!!!! PAINT WITH ALL THE COLORS OF THE WIND!!!!!
——————————————————————————————
Damn, ngl, Ratcliffe is kinda attractive... If he didn't have those weird ass front pigtails constantly on. Like, he wears two ribbon bows for his front hair but leaves the rest of his back hair untied? Is this old rich people fashion??
——————————————————————————————
AHAHAHAHAH, I'M LAUGHING SO HARD AT THESE MENS REACTIONS. John Smith looking like he just won the crazy award while looking up at a talking tree. And then the two nameless character's facial expressions when they fell to the ground and see the tree roots move. XD
——————————————————————————————
... I hate to say this, but damn does Ratcliffe have big boobs. Is he secretly wearing a corset under that purple blouse? XD
——————————————————————————————
Screw John Smith and Pocahontas. Percy and Miko are the real love team here.
Change my mind.
——————————————————————————————
"I'd rather die tomorrow than live a hundred years without you."
Ok. I hate John Smith, but damn is that not a romantic ass line.
Could have been said better, though.
——————————————————————————————
Dear god the face he makes when he looks at her and the way he leans into her touch like a man starved.
——————————————————————————————
I know the Savages song is bad, but like... Why does it sound so good? Why do I like it?? What is wrong with me??? Is it because Ratcliffe is singing it???? Do I like Ratcliffe now????? Man, I need serious help.
——————————————————————————————
Girls got balls, willing to take a hit for a man. Is this how it actually happens in the real story of Pocahontas? Idk history, man. I'm just vibing.
——————————————————————————————
Hm. A weird little detail I noticed in Governor Ratcliffe is that his face slowly grows red when he's angry or frustrated, like, the change is subtle enough that you don't notice it until it's there.
...
Why am I paying so much attention to him?
——————————————————————————————
Damn, girl knows where her priority lies and sticks with her peeps.
Good for her...
——————————————————————————————
I just noticed I say "Damn" a lot...
Damn...
——————————————————————————————
Just finished the movie, it was surprisingly ok
...
Welp. Time for Pocahontas 2.

does thomas rolfe show up as a canon descendent? yes, he was a real person, but it could be another element to link our realm to the everrealm. also we know if there was a 3rd pocahontas movie, the villain would be john smith, who was not a good person in real history.
My thoughts have been that he does exist within the DisneyVerse yes. Technically there is a stained glass window of Pocahontas in Descendants though that has her with John Smith, and any hypothetical Canon Descendants I did would have her still with John Rolfe as I actually like him and it is who she canonically had a child with irl.
I doubt they would make John Smith a villain in any hypothetical third Pocahontas. The John Smith in the Disney movies is a good man, not a perfect one by any means but one who I think improves by meeting Pocahontas.
And as "Our World" in the DisneyVerse doesn't always reflect the actual Real World (presence of magic, historical events going somewhat differently ala Pocahontas, fictional characters like Tarzan exisiting, aliens proven ect) John Smith wouldn't be a Villain in any thing I might choose to do either.
I usually choose to shy away from Pocahontas stuff too much since it is such a controversial film, though I will admit that I still enjoy both films for what they are, and I do plan to have Pocahontas show up in the 12 Dancing Princesses idea as she is one of the 12 Princess movies referenced when Sofia travels to the Secret Library, which is the idea that sparked using the official Disney Princess line as the 12 Princesses in the first place
(Magical boat underground traveling to a secret location and all like in the fairytale)
But other than that, I probably won't do much more for Pocahontas just because it can get so controversial so quickly even with the best intentions and I don't want that sort of discourse on a blog thats meant to just be enjoyable for everyone.
Maybe I'll do a design for Thomas Rolfe. Suffice to say that the Pocahontas who exists in the DisneyVerse would not die young and would continue to work to improve relationships between the Native Americans and the English settlers. A similar situation to how Anya from Anastasia is an alternate universe counterpart to her tragic real life inspiration.
