Just finished Rot in Paradise. I was expecting a game about you and your friends being stranded on the beach and turning into water addicted zombies, not an allegory for toxic relationships where you can't help those who clearly don't want your help and how the good moments you had doesn't take away their mistreatment of you and how despite how much you love your friends you need to mourn and move on before they (literally) drown you with them.

Saint Seiya Question Game

-- Thank you for the tag, my friend! --
Remove my answers and put yours under the questions!
How did you find out about Saint Seiya?
My sister is actually a huge fan of Saint Seiya, so I found out about from her. We actually watched it when we were kids. I don’t have that vivid of a memory about it, but I do know the one I recall watching is the ADV dub. I remember how deep they made Hyoga’s voice and that’s it.
But my sister really loved it and I’d watch with her. One day, it kinda disappeared and because we live in the United States—y’all probably know what I mean— It was really hard to find it at all. So for years, my sister was trying to track it down and she dabbled into the other series related to it a little bit. It wasn’t until last year that we finally found it thanks to Netflix and we watched it all with our entire family. I saw the first season with the new dub and was immediately obsessed with it. I enjoyed every second of watching the whole thing. It kills me that we don’t have the Hades arc dubbed yet and I hope we get it soon.
I watched Lost Canvas, too, and loved it as well. Albafica made me love it and the El Cid’s episodes were really top notch for me. I love his voice. I love his character. I think he’s literally the coolest thing ever. I delved into the manga and I just love Lost Canvas. It has some weird stuff here and there, but I adore it. I hope one day we get a season three because it’s truly that good.
I just really love Saint Seiya & I’m so glad that it exists. Truly. I don’t remember having that much fun watching an anime since like watching Death Note, Soul Eater, Sgt. Frog, and like—Azumanga Daioh... all for different reasons, of course.
Who’s your favorite character and why?
When I started watching the show again, it was Shun. He’s so adorable and his heart is so big. I love how sweet and strong he is. I have a soft spot for Shun honestly. The more I watched it, I really started to just adore all the Bronze Saints, too.
But another character I really adore is Cancer Deathmask. He’s so charismatic and fun. I really adore the voice they gave him in the Netflix English dub, too. He killed it. I just absolutely am in love with him. Yes, he committed several crimes. Yes, he has killed numerous people. Yes, his temple looks like a Mortal Kombat stage... but it truly builds character. He’s my husband and I think we’re all allowed to make as choices ever now and then.
Who’s your absolute hate-character and why?
Tatsumi. I hate how he never faced the consequences for anything he did. He literally abused those children—Ikki, more-so, and he sent him to Death Queen to DIE. He’s never shown signs to change really. They just treat him like a crack/comedy character and it irks me because he deserved to get beat for what he did at least. Wish he would have literally got tortured or fired. Anything at all, but they just prepare like nothing happen and he continues being an ass-wipe.
I don’t care for Kido either because even if he took Saori and raised her, he never did much to stop the countless abuse the children went under and knowing sent the children away to die. No, even in the manga, I don’t see it as a noble sacrifice to literally sacrifice most of your children to fulfill a destiny. Even if they were just sent away, he literally could have prevented Tatsumi from abusing them and raised Saori better. No matter how you look at it, he’s a shit person, too. Yes, he helped them become saints but the way he did it will never feel right to me. He separated Seiya from his sister and told him he’d only see her again if he became a saint, knowing full well he couldn’t even guarantee that. That emotional manipulation is toxic and cruel to do to a child—an in the manga—your own son. Like ew,,,,, I don’t like the children aspect in the manga, but with that considered still, he’s still a horrible person and I wish Saori would stop hailing him as a good guy.
Shippings you like and why you ship them?
Tumblr media
Shaina/Seiya — In my heart, they are the canonical pairing. They really do protect each other and care deeply for one another. Seiya reacts strongly every time she gets hurt and Shaina is always doing her best to protect/defend him. They’re both strong in their own right and they both have a deeper connection to each other. Even when Shaina tried to hide her feelings because she felt there is no way they could be together and tried to kill him, you could tell she really couldn’t do it because she really cared about him. He really cares about her, too, which makes them so perfect for each other. They are each other’s strength and they push each other to become better & stronger
Marin/Aiolia — They’re really cute when they interact with each other and I’m pretty sure they’re an actual canon pair. They really care and confine in one another. I just honestly adore seeing them interact. They never really got to tell each other how they feel, but I’m sure they both know. I wish she would have gotten some more time with him because it’s kinda sad that she’s all alone now. ;;
Freya/Hägan —Hägan clearly loved her, but due to the strictness of loyalty in their culture, he couldn’t bring himself to betray Hilda. It upsets me what happened to them because they deserved to be happy. Poor Freya & Hägan. A lovely couple but terribly tragic. Hägan clearly misunderstood Hyoga & Freya’s relationship and must have thought that Freya loved him even in reality the only person she really loved was him and that is what breaks my heart. I was on the Freya and Hyoga train until Hägan showed up. Now, I can’t bring myself to ship them without feeling bad.
Hilda/Siegfried — Siegfried did everything for her and, in the end, he died because he believed in Hilda’s true vision. He wanted to doing nothing more than protect her and he died to help do so. It’s beautiful yet so tragic.
Hyoga/Eri — They’re just extremely cute together. I really loved their interactions. They deserve happiness and the entire world.
Ikki/Esmeralda — If you ignore that weird ass Shun thing, they’re cute. That should have never been a thing. I ignore it to hell and back but I do think they’re adorable and I feel for Ikki.
Shun/June — She only shows up once like why??? But they’re so adorable together. I wish we could see them both more, but unfortunately, she disappeared into the ether. I do believe she is perfect for Shun, tho.
Me/Deathmask — OTP. He’s my husband.
Shippings you don’t like/hate and why you dislike them?
Adult/Minor pairings.
Incest pairings.
Saori/Seiya — I don’t feel like Seiya likes her that way. I think Saori may like him. She’s always shown some special interest in him, but I’m sure Seiya cares about her more so as a goddess and friend than a love interest. Every time I see this ship, Seiya is acting weirdly out of character which really throws me off from the whole ship. Saori has shown to sometimes literally prioritize Seiya over everyone else when dropping Saga’s dead ass body to cradle him... It just rubs me the wrong way??? Seiya cares about her but he doesn’t react nearly as strongly about her as he does with Shaina. I don’t mind it being one-sided. She’s a girl and is allowed to have feelings, but I don’t really see her with anyone. I think she’ll probably grow out of it, but who knows. This ship is just really not my cup of tea.
Your favorite scene.
It’s hard to think of one, but the funniest scene is when they’re in Yomotsu Hirasaka. Deathmask is about to throw Shiryū into the pit, but then Shunrei’s prayers reach him and he gets so annoyed that he telepathically throws her off fucking a cliff. I don’t care. It’s comedy gold. I laughed so hard at that. Deathmask is truly a marvel.
Honorable mention: ❝ Maybe no else has a cloth made of ice that hasn't melted since before the time of... dinosaurs. Or... maybe no one else has powers like me, like the power over snow, ice, and even glaciers. In fact, you know what, Snake Eyes, maybe you should just think of me as your own personal Ice Age Dude! ❞
Your favorite Attack:
Hard question, so I’ll just name attacks I really like: Heaven Dancing Ring, Diamond Dust, Thunder Wave, Specter Punch, Phoenix Wing Ascent, Praesepe Hell Waves, Scarlet Needle Antares, Bloody Rose, Another Dimension, Wolf Cruelty Claw, Great Ardent Pressure, Greatest Caution, Dead End Symphony, and Imperial Phantasm Punch.
If you could decide for which god/goddess you fight, which one you prefer and why?
Athena. Despite liking Poseidon, Odin, Abel, & Poseidon, I like the army she commands the most.
If you could choose a Cloth. Which you would prefer?
Hard question again. I really like the Scorpio Cloth. The head piece is nice. I’m a sucker for the quack on the Cygnus Cloth and the Nemo on the Pisces Cloth, too. It’s honestly hard to choose one, specially if you count God Cloths, too. I did draw myself in the Ophiuchus cloth, so got the sake of this question, Ophiuchus Gold Cloth.
From which country you’re from?
America.
Your favorite season / sequel:
Sanctuary arc and the Asgard arc. Let’s get the money. Both do a fantastic job at world-building and I love them both equally. My favorite spin-off is The Lost Canvas.

Crop of Princess Alix (‘Sunny’) of Hesse, 1894
[Beware, a long letter!]
“My own darling Ernie dear,
A good kiss & blessing for your dear letter, which made me so happy, & for the photo of my darling Nicky, which you were an angel to have had enlarged for me. It is an excellent one, & the expression so nice & natural. Really, darling, that beautiful parasole is much too good for me, you spoil me always with your presents. I took it out with me of course yesterday morning, but did not open it, it was so beautifully rolled up. No, it is too sweet & that splendid saphire [sic] on the top, I feel I must hide it with my hand & not let any one see it, & yet I am so proud of it, I want all to see it. -
But how I missed you, sweet One, is not to be described. Oh, I missed you sadly, but felt yr thoughts were at least with yr Sunny. It was a great joy having at least Victoria here, as I should have felt too miserable without one relation on my last birthday as a young girl. - Poor Orchie, she had never been away from me on the day before, & I think she felt rather low, from her letter. - But the weather was amiable & fine, after four days incessant rain. To-day it is also beautiful - really we deserve it after all this time. -
Grandmama gave me a delightful teabasket for four. Victoria gave me frames for photos of Nicky & a workbag & silver spoon to put the tea leaves in, like the egg I gave you last year at the Wolfsgarten. - Nicky gave me a magnificent bracelet in diamonds with a clasp of diamonds & two rubies, to be worn & a brooch too. - The cake with the pink roses was a great success, & reminded me so of home, - & all the flowers to decorate the table. -
I got a box sent me from I don’t know whom from London with glorious roses - the room is full of flowers now & smells gloriously. I am so happy as I adore flowers so, & in thoughts I bless the kind angel who sent them - if I could only find out who it was. - Irene sent me a little picture in oils of dear Papa’s sitting room, which I am delighted to have. -
Then some amiable Ladies sent me glorious flowers, & one a little book written by her brother & so on, kind little attentions & great crowds running to see us go out driving & the the town flagged - most touching, - oh, & they had to wait so long, as we came home much later than usual. - A pencil drawing a lady (now dead) had done of Mama was sent me by a poor old servant, so I accepted & gave some money as an Unterstützung. - I was enchanted with photos of Fatinitza & the two little Jucker, Winky sent me; so nice. -
Victoria & I went for a delightful drive in our two tricycle bathchairs, & looked at a dropping well - if you put in anything, it turns to stone in a few months. - We had to walk a bit, & the consequence is more pain, so it is no good, I must not do it again; - I drink now to glasses a day, vile - one gets brought me at 8 in the morning, like hot salt water, loathsome - then at 11 I go in my bathchair & drink it at the wells, & the crowd gazes to see it run down my throat, very vulgar of them, & then to view me get into my chair bundled up - enshying as Irene would say. -
I am glad you at last are at Auerbach, & I hope you will enjoy your stay there & the neighbourhood of Schönberg. Give dear Marie my love when you see her, & tell her how often my thoughts run back to last year, & I see us sitting in Alexi’s room burning & painting away as tho’ to earn our daily bread. - And your hey cocks [sic] - I can imagine the length of Mino’s face when you returned after midnight, you 3 mad hatters, what will you be up to next? -
I feel for you when the time of yr visite [sic] to Mainz comes. I hear the town is already being grandly decorated - I fear it will be not quite easy for you the whole thing, but I am sure it will be a fine sight. - I may leave here on the 20th of June, wh. day U want to go to Walton & meet Nicky there, who would be arriving that day at Gravesend in his Father’s yatch, & would go straight on to Walton. About four days we should be there and then go to Windsor.
Grandmama would be too disappointed if I did not remain with her till she goes to Osborne, about the 15th July, but one cannot settle it quite. She is still upset I am going so far away, & grumbles at us in each letter, poor dear. - I must say I too dread the moment when I shall have to say goodbye to her, as who knows when we shall ever meet again - she is no longer young, poor darling Grandmama. -
I am going to be good & do all Dr. Oliver says, so as to be as well as possible when I at last shall be home, at beloved Wolfsgarten, the dearest place on earth, & yet where I miss beloved Papa the most. - I heard from Nicky, he sends you his fondest love; - we hear from each other daily. - Will you thank Ducky & Mino for dear letters & presents - how charming she worked the basket. I shall write to them to-morrow, I cannot write much at a time on the sopha [sic], it is too tiring, & I must be off to my water. -
So Goodbye & God bless you, my own beloved Ernie dear. Many tender kisses, Ever yr own loving old Sister Sunny. -
P.S. Zwilling sent me a touching telegram - he is always so kind to me, it nearly makes me cry. Oh, how I thank God you have got such a true friend, who I think would do anything for you. - By the by, Irene asked in a humble way, whether she might venture to come to Wolfsgarten about the 20th of July. - Toddie would be away at a bath, Harry away, & she all alone, & I know it is a sehnliche Wunsch of hers to come to the Wolfsgarten. You know she has never lived there since she married. - Won’t you or Ducky write & ask her, I can’t now; it must come from you. -
Aunt Helena of course begged for you to invite Thora whilst she is at Nauheim - Thora got quite red, as she I know hates inviting himself, but I know she is dying to come for one night, only is afraid Ducky might not care to have her. If she is not in your way - mind you don’t do it for my sake, - then one of you will and ask her, & perhaps you could put in a word to her & Christle about their present which you never thanked them for personally. -
Louie is in C.[umberland] Lodge you know. Well, if she asks, should I not better say there is no room, or I don’t know whom you have invited, & that she must write to Ducky, & then she can answer how sorry you are there is no place, because I am sure it would not be good for her to come. - Poor Thora is mad about L.[ouie]’s behaviour towards Zwilling; - I wish she would go back to Aribert, those seperations [sic] I am sure are bad for her. - The amount of telegrams I got yesterday was appalling, just now one came from Aunt Minny from Abastouman. -
To-day a year ago poor Sahl came to us to Kranichstein. Did you write to him, I am so sorry I gave you unintentionally all that trouble. And what was his answer - please write it to me, I am so anxious to know, because he is so nice, poor boy. - Schneiderlein is there, I must fly to my water. - Many kisses. -”

Laurens time on parole and Hamiltons engagement to Elizabeth Schuyler
On the 12th of May Laurens is taken prisoner of war and confined to the boundaries of Pennsylvania.
On 30th of June Hamilton writes to Laurens offering sympathy for his capture and assures him he is doing what he can to see Laurens exchanged.
I received my Dear Laurens a letter from you which came by Mr. Ternant; and I since learn you are arrived at Philadelphia on a parole restricted to the State of Pensylvania. I regret the loss of Charles Town as a public misfortune. I regret it, as it affects my friends and among these I need not tell you how much my heart distinguishes your case. I know what you must suffer ⟨to⟩ have your hands tied up at a crisis so important as the present. I have talked to the General about your exchange; but the rigid rules of impartiality oppose our wishes. I am the only one in the family who think you can be exchanged with any propriety, on the score of your relation to the Commander in Chief. We all love you sincerely; but I have more of the infirmities of human nature, than the others, and suspect my self of being byassed by my partiality for you.
He also informs Laurens of his engagement to Elizabeth Schuyler
Have you not heard that I am on the point of becoming a benedict? I confess my sins. I am guilty. Next fall completes my doom. I give up my liberty to Miss Schuyler. She is a good hearted girl who I am sure will never play the termagant; though not a genius she has good sense enough to be agreeable, and though not a beauty, she has fine black eyes—is rather handsome and has every other requisite of the exterior to make a lover happy. And believe me, I am lover in earnest, though I do not speak of the perfections of my Mistress in the enthusiasm of Chivalry.
On the 2nd of July Hamilton writes to Eliza about visiting Laurens
I have received a letter from my Laurens solicitg an interview on the Pensylvania Boundary. The General has half consented to its taking place. I hope to be permitted to meet him; if so, I will go to Philadelphia and then you may depend, I shall not forget the picture you requested.
It seems however Hamilton probably didn’t make it to Philadelphia until November (he does get that picture for her tho).
On the 19th of July Hamilton writes to Laurens however the letter is missing.
On the 30th of July Laurens writes to Hamilton that he only just received his letter of the 19th. Given this i would assume he has received the letter from the 30th of June with the news of Hamiltons engagement however he does not mention it at all in this letter. Instead the letter is mostly about a hat he is getting made for Hamilton.
This leaves 3 possibilities:
1. He mentions Hamiltons engagement in an earlier letter that has been lost.
2. He hasn't actually received the earlier letter yet. (Its possible it was miscarried and took longer to get to Laurens than it should have. Hamilton says in a latter letter “I am sure one of my letters must have miscarried.” He could be referring to this letter however its really impossible to know.)
3. He is just really passive aggressive and is purposefully not mentioning it.
On the 8th of September Laurens writes Hamilton a letter. This letter is missing.
On the 12th of September Hamilton writes Laurens. There is a clear strain between them form lack of correspondence, Hamilton takes some responsibility but is clearly somewhat bitter at Laurens for not writing. (It should be noted he has not yet received Laurens letter written on the 8th).
We ought both my Dear Laurens to beg pardon of our friendship for mutual neglect in our correspondence, though I believe you are a good deal in arrears to me, and I am sure one of my letters must have miscarried.
He is clearly feeling the distance of their relationship
I have conveyed your reproof to the lads. They have considered me as the secretary of the family and fancied a partnership which did not exist.
On the 16th of September Hamilton receives Laurens letter form the 8th and responds immediately. He tells Laurens he hopes his attempts to be exchanged are successful and tells him if that if they are not he should not kill himself.
For your own sake, for my sake, for the public sake, I shall pray for the success of the attempt you mention; that you may have it in your power to act with us. But if you should be disappointed, bear it like a man; and have recourse, neither to the dagger, nor to the poisoned bowl, nor to the rope.
Its hard to know if Hamilton is seriously worried Laurens may hurt himself or if he is being figurative. Considering other evidence that Laurens may have been suicidal i’m inclined to take this passage quite literally.
He again pleads with Laurens to write
That you can speak only of your private affairs shall be no excuse for your not writing frequently. Remember that you write to your friends, and that friends have the same interests, pains, pleasures, sympathies; and that all men love egotism.
Then we finally get some evidence of Laurens reaction to Hamiltons engagement.
In spite of Schuylers black eyes, I have still a part for the public and another for you; so your impatience to have me married is misplaced; a strange cure by the way, as if after matrimony I was to be less devoted than I am now.
There is so MUCH going on it this sentence. Its clearly a direct response to something Laurens has written in his previous letter. It seems Laurens thinks that Hamiltons marriage to Eliza will ‘cure’ him of his devotion to Laurens. Hamilton basically shuts it down essentially saying ‘thats not how it works’. Hamilton is reassuring Laurens that his marriage wont change their relationship.
However he wants to be clear he is going to have sex with his wife
Let me tell you, that I intend to restore the empire of Hymen and that Cupid is to be his prime Minister.
and he would invite Laurens to join
I wish you were at liberty to transgress the bounds of Pensylvania. I would invite you after the fall to Albany to be witness to the final consummation.
but Eliza is just not into Laurens in that way
My Mistress is a good girl, and already loves you because I have told her you are a clever fellow and my friend; but mind, she loves you a l’americaine not a la françoise.
In October Hamilton writes to Laurens about the Benedict Arnold treason and the fate of John André. This is more of a public letter than a private one and Hamilton also sends a copy to Eliza and eventually publishes it in the Evening Post.
On the 27th of October he writes to Eliza about visiting Laurens in Philadelphia
I expect in a few days to go to Philadelphia for a day or two. I shall there see my friend and make him participate in my good fortune by giving him a picture of my mistress. After that I will return to Head Quarters, where I shall remain a fortnight and then set out for Albany. You will see me before the end of next month.
Despite his plans to leave in ‘a few days’ he doesn't seem to have left until the 5/6th of November. He was definitely in Philadelphia by the 10th however Laurens was released on the 6th so he was probably no longer a pow by the time Hamilton arrived.
Hamilton was at Passaic Falls, New Jersey on the 15th and was back at headquarters on the 18th, he was there until at least the 27th and was in Albany by the 14th when he married Eliza.

14 Beautiful Love Letter Excerpts From Famous Folks Throughout History
It’s always nice to let your special someone know just how much you truly care about them. Obviously, how you say it varies from couple to couple, but there’s nothing quite like sending off a sweet message and knowing just how big a smile it will put on their face.
In today’s technology-dominated society, that’s come tomean typing out a text with carefully plotted emojis or perhaps going “old school” with a flowing email of affection.
While those are nice, there’s reallyno denying that theylack acertain charmthat so many romantic exchanges in the pasthad. That’s never more clear than in the beautiful words famous folks throughout history have strung together to let their loved ones knowexactly how they felt.
Of course we expect this sort of flowery language from renowned writers (some of which are includedbelow), butyou might be surprised by just how sweet some of the others were when it came to expressing what was in their heart.
Take a look and let us know if we forgot anyprecious messages you’ve seen from the past.
And don’t forget to SHARE with your friends and family!

1. Ernest Hemingway To Marlene Dietrich

“I can’t say how every time I ever put my arms around you I felt that I was home. Nor too many things. But we were always cheerful and jokers together.”
The author and actresstraded lettersfor nearly three decades without ever getting their timing right for an actual romantic relationship.
2. Napoleon Bonaparte To Josphine de Beauharnais
Wikimedia Commmons
“Since I left you, I have been constantly depressed. My happiness is to be near you. Incessantly I live over in my memory your caresses, your tears, your affectionate solicitude. The charms of the incomparable Josphine kindle continually a burning and a glowing flame in my heart.”
Despite his affectionate words, the pair eventually split up when Napoleon sought a new wife to give him a male heir.
3. Richard Burton To Elizabeth Taylor
Wikimedia Commons
“My blind eyes are desperately waiting for the sight of you. You dont realise of course, E.B., how fascinatingly beautiful you have always been, and how strangely you have acquired an added and special and dangerous loveliness.”
It clearly wasn’t just the headline writers who had a way with wordsthroughout this iconic couple’s bumpy relationship.
4. King Henry VIII To Anne Boleyn
Wikimedia Commons
“I beg to know expressly your intention touching the love between us. Necessity compels me to obtain this answer, having been more than a year wounded by the dart of love, and not yet sure whether I shall fail or find a place in your affection.”
The king, who is notorious for walking down the aisle six times in his attempts to have a male heir, wrote this particularly moving note to his second wife while still married to his first.
5. Ludwig van Beethoven To “Immortal Beloved”
Wikimedia Commons
“We shall probably soon meet, even today I cannot communicate my remarks to you, which during these days I made about my life were our hearts close together, I should probably not make any such remarks. My bosom is full, to tell you much there are moments when I find that speech is nothing at all. Brighten up remain my true and only treasure, my all, as I to you. The rest the gods must send, what must be for us and shall.”
Unfortunately, the composer’s “beloved” remains a mystery to this day.
6. Frida Kahlo To Diego Rivera
Wikimedia Commons
“Diego, my love,
“Remember that once you finish the fresco we will be together forever once and for all, without arguments or anything, only to love one another.

7. John Keats To Fanny Brawne

“My love has made me selfish. I cannot exist without you I am forgetful of every thing but seeing you again my Life seems to stop there I see no further. You have absorbd me. I have a sensation at the present moment as though I was dissolving I should be exquisitely miserable without the hope of soon seeing you.”
The English poet was particularly inspired to write after falling for Fanny at first sight, butthey sadly never married due to her mother’s disapproval.
8. Abigail Adams To John Adams
Wikimedia Commons
“Should I draw you the picture of my Heart, it would be what I hope you would Love; tho it contained nothing new; the early possession you obtained there; and the absolute power you have ever maintained over it; leaves not the smallest space unoccupied.
“I look back to the early days of our acquaintance; and Friendship, as to the days of Love and Innocence; and with an indescribable pleasure I have seen near a score of years roll over our Heads, with an affection heightened and improved by time nor have the dreary years of absence in the smallest degree effaced from my mind the Image of the dear untitled man to whom I gave my Heart.”
Abigail sent this to her “dearest friend” before heading across the ocean for a trip to Holland during John’s presidency.
9. Johnny Cash To June Carter Cash
Wikimedia Commons
“We get old and get used to each other. We think alike. We read each others minds. We know what the other one wants without asking. Sometimes we irritate each other a little bit. Maybe sometimes take each other for granted.
“But once in a while, like today, I meditate on it and realize how lucky I am to share my life with the greatest woman I ever met. You still fascinate and inspire me. You influence me for the better. Youre the object of my desire, the #1 earthly reason for my existence. I love you very much.”
These kind words were shared on June’s birthday in 1994, clearly proving the classic country pair’s love was the real deal.
10. Voltaire To Olympe Dunover
Wikimedia Commons
“I am a prisoner here in the name of the King; they can take my life, but not the love that I feel for you. Yes, my adorable mistress, to-night I shall see you, and if I had to put my head on the block to do it.
“No, nothing has the power to part me from you; our love is based upon virtue, and will last as long as our lives. Adieu, there is nothing that I will not brave for your sake; you deserve much more than that. Adieu, my dear heart!”
TheCandide authorwrote this note for Olympe, who unfortunately doesn’t seem to have a portrait available, from behind the prison walls that her mother was able to cast him into out of disapproval. He eventually escaped.
11. Elizabeth Barrett Browning To Robert Browning
Wikimedia Commons
“You have touched me more profoundly than I thought even you could have touched me my heart was full when you came here today. Henceforward I am yours for everything.”
It seems writing 44 sonnets for her husband wasn’t enough for Elizabeth, who also shared her affection in this moving letter.
12. Tsarina Alexandra To Tsar Nicholas II
Wikimedia Commons
“Off you go again alone and it’s with a very heavy heart I part from you. No more kisses and tender caresses for ever so long I want to bury myself in you, hold you tight in my arms, make you feel the intense love of mine.
“You are my very life Sweetheart, and every separation gives such endless heartache… Goodbye my Angel, Husband of my heart I envy my flowers that will accompany you. I press you tightly to my breast, kiss every sweet place with tender love…”
There are several letters from the last empress of Russia, gushing with affection for her royal husband before their family suffered from the revolution.
13. Mark Twain To Olivia Langdon Clemens
Wikimedia Commons
“Livy Darling, I am grateful grateful-er than ever before that you were born, & that your love is mine & our two lives woven & welded together!”
The humorous author kept his sentiments short, but still so sweet, in this note to his wife in 1888.
14. Winston Churchill To Clementine Churchill
Wikimedia Commons
“My darling Clemmie,
“In your letter from Madras you wrote some words very dear to me, about my having enriched your life. I cannot tell you what pleasure this gave me, because I always feel so overwhelmingly in your debt, if there can be accounts in love. What it has been to me to live all these years in your heart and companionship no phrases can convey.”
We don’t usually think of the legendary U.K. prime minister as the romantic type, but it’s really no surprise he hadthe same mastery when it came to words of love as he did with his stately speeches.
