Just finished this book, my fifth this year (others were Just Mercy, Furious Hours, The Removed, and Anxious People). I couldn’t put this book down. Great mix of scrappy teen detective, murder mystery, family story all interwoven with race and the criminal justice system in a way that makes you feel it in a visceral way through the eyes of the main character, Tracy Beaumont. Highly recommend! Also, I was wrong about whodunnit and that doesn’t happen so often (I’ve prob read too many mysteries in my life) so was pleasantly surprised to be wrong. 🅱🅾🅾🅺 🆃🅾🆄🆁 & 🅶🅸🆅🅴🅰🆆🅰🆈 #QOTD What would you do if you were accused of a crime you didn't commit? Every week, seventeen-year-old Tracy Beaumont writes letters to Innocence X, asking the organization to help her father, an innocent Black man on death row. After seven years, Tracy is running out of time—her dad has only 267 days left. Then the unthinkable happens. The police arrive in the night, and Tracy’s older brother, Jamal, goes from being a bright, promising track star to a “thug” on the run, accused of killing a white girl. Dear Martin meets Just Mercy in this unflinching yet uplifting YA novel that explores the racist injustices in the American justice system. If there was ever a book that screamed at me to buy, this would be that book. From the first page, Kim Johnson brings you into the world of the Beaumonts. Tracy, Jamal, Corinne, her mother, and father James Beaumont. We start off learning that Tracy's father has been in prison for 7 years, and is running out of time on death row. She has been writing letters to Innocence X hoping to get her father represented so that he can appeal his case and get off death row. The clock is ticking, as he has less than a year left before his execution date. On top of all that, her brother Jamal gets accused of killing a white girl at school, and now he is on the run, unwilling to be arrested or brought to the police station because he knows what may happen to him. Tracy is determined to save both her brother and father from prison or death, and we learn about her fight for justice and unwillingness to let things just be. She is a fighter, a problem solver, and believes in uncovering the truth no matter what. This book brings up very hard hitting topics, wonderfully under the YA umbrella. Although these topics are hard hitting, they are very much needed in the Black and Brown community. Kim Johnson discusses: - Corrupt police - Flawed criminal justice system (guilty until proven innocent for Black people) - Innocent black men in prison - Fallout from family during/after prison - Racism (white supremacy) - Big private prison business - Microaggressions and stereotypes from white people - Integrity - Interracial dating/friendship - Teenage life during a crisis - Black Lives Matter This book amazingly brought together a clear picture of what racism in America is like in real life. All of the subtle racism, in your face racism, and blatant disrespect is all brought to life here. This book should sicken you about the injustices Black people face in the criminal justice system. This book should anger you when understanding how white people can say one thing in your face and do another, hurting or harming Black people for no other reason but because they are Black. The lies white people tell themselves to protect their own interests. #netgalley #thisismyamerica https://www.instagram.com/p/CC3lLuZA5-e/?igshid=15kn2mndm5i4e

#Repost from @naturallyfitbyj with @regram.app ... I NEVER knew your America because THIS is this me only America I know...so, until you understand why we say #blacklivesmatter Instead of all lives matter we will never be on the same page. The liberty’s you were granted were not the same freedom or liberty’s we received so I can’t pledge to your flag...I kneel...I can’t walk down the street with the same peace that you walk with...actually instead of being on offense, my life along with my people have been to walk on defense and to also protect yourself...to take my hood off...to straighten my hair and not look TOO ETHNIC...to not voice my opinion or that comes off as the “angry black woman”....to not walk In Groups with my people. I will never lose hope in my Black Kings because a man a Black woman with 2 brothers I see the pain they endure so only a black man can ever truly sympathize with my struggles as well but yet being PRO-Black to y’all means antiwhite 🤷🏾‍♀️. No, it means I love my people and culture and I’m proud. I just want y’all to understand the difference. We can’t not be too loud or call out “American History”....you see WE don’t have the same history...instead y’all Try and bypass the hurt our people endured and still do each and everyday. To be nervous each time my brothers or me are ever pulled over by a cop that it could be potentially our last breath...to not even be able to jog during this pandemic without being murdered! I understand we’re all suppose to the have the same liberty’s and freedoms as our neighbors but WE DON’T and until you recognize that and understand why #blacklivesmatter then you’re part of the problem. It’s the tales of 2 Americas. WE SALUTE YOU KINGS AND QUEENS. We love you 🕊 . . #imtired #notanotherhashtag #rip #saytheirnames #justiceforall #blacklivesmatter #useyourplatform #thisismyamerica #thisisamerikkka #isaidwhatisaid #irunwithmaud #explorepage . . . EVERYONE WANTS TO BE BLACK UNTIL THEY SEE WHAT THE BLACK STRUGGLE TURLY IS...then they go silent! . . My apologies for any typos I’m in the moment #vulnerability is power https://www.instagram.com/p/B_5sVhylP3O/?igshid=cvp15u6igss2

Saw this little peanut at the women’s march in Iowa today. I’m gonna do everything I can to make the world better for her and all the other little ones I saw today. I hope by the time they grow up the world is much more accepting and loving and there’s no discrimination or hate. I’ll do everything I can to make the world see that all humans no matter where they come from, or what they look like, or what sex they were born, should be treated equally. The fact that I have to fight for this is sad, my grandma fought for it, my great grandma fought for it, my great great grandma fought for it, now it’s my turn. I really hope this is our last fight, we gotta keep it going until we see the results we want, the results we need. We have to do everything we can. Don’t be silent, don’t despair, organize and fight for what’s right. We can do this!
