fanfiction, like a lot of original fiction, can be insufferable about things like disability, sex work, being lgbt or other types of marginalization, but I feel like fanfic is a lot more shameless about exploiting or projecting tragedy or angst related to marginalization because it's supposed to be a low-stress self-indulgent hobby for fun and if you criticize that the 'let people enjoy things' crowd crawls out of the woodwork and acts all attacked for people recognizing their views and messages are shitty.
transformative works can be really fun and a great way to handle these things in a way that rings personally true to the artist, but it can also include one-note 'tragic' AUs by sighted people where one half of a couple goes blind and it's just milked for all the angst possible (fancomic I saw during my gomens days). which is really frustrating. and it's a difficult subject bc different people relate to their identities in different and entirely valid ways, but I feel like a lot of fan content doesn't hold any space for nuance and is entirely geared towards shallow indulgence in and...tourism? of marginalization that the readers don't experience. marvel conversion camp fanfiction effect
