Next up is Owen Mercer aka Boomerang Jr, son of Captain Boomerang and the speedster of the TrWh Outlaw team! Get ready for another long post you guys, god my hands are hurting this week arrughhh.
Owen's a fun character to draw and has a fun personality in general. He's more angsty and dark in the comics but since Digger finds out about him early on, Owen's much more happy in this au. Digger and Owen have a fantastic father-son relationship and Owen really looks up to him. Digger is so happy he found Owen but is kinda frantic on how to raise him, being a villain isn't the best job for a dad. Not sure what age Digger discovers him, maybe 10 or so?
That mini version of Digger's outfit is what Owen would've worn if he was discovered even younger (he's 4-6 in that doodle), preteen Owen would've found that outfit a bit too silly for his tastes tho.
Honestly I'm not sure if Owen even lives with him, since Digger is a rogue and probably in jail more often than not, Owen might still be in foster care. I don't remember if Owen was shown to be adopted in the comics, he was already shown to be an adult. Btw, concerning Owen's age*, I'm slightly lowering his age to better fit with Jason's age group (he's 12 to Jason's 10). He, along with Jack Moore, are the oldest of the team, too bad Owen doesn't care about acting his age!
While Owen loves hanging out with his father, he also likes to hang out with the Flash aka Barry Allen. Barry has been mentoring Owen on and off (much to Wally's dismay) and has been slowly pushing him towards heroism. He's knows Owen's got a good heart and see's that he has the potential to access the speedforce. Owen's a character that's caught between two worlds, rogue and hero. Does he want to follow in his father's footsteps or go follow Barry?
What a conundrum, but this is a problem he had in the comics. His struggle to figure what to do with his life. Actually, I think I heard somewhere he was actually created with the intent to replace Wally as the Flash but they dropped that plot point, leaving him adrift in the comics. Let me know if that's wrong tho!
Captain Cold aka Leonard Snart isn't helping matters as you can see in that vague threat up there, I'd like to better define that relationship between those two but I'd need to read more comics with Leonard to do that.
Tumblr media
Here I have Owen with some of his friends and his dad. I said in my last post with Rankorr, that he and Owen's friendship is a nod towards the famous Green Lantern/Flash partnership. Owen's always trying to get Jack to loosen up and have fun, Jack sometimes finds this annoying but is slowly letting Owen in his life. You can see up there Owen giving Jason a ride someplace, bet Jason wishes he took the bus lol.
You can see Owen gushing over Para Dice, his canonical girlfriend from Rebirth. Owen at some point meets her in Australia and has an instant crush on her. Para is a rather mysterious girl, but has taken a liken to Owen as well. Still too young for a proper romance tho, plus Owen would need to sharpen up his speed skills if he wants to make this LDR work.
There's Digger training Owen in the art of the boomerang, rogue or hero, any son of Cap. Boomerang will be a learn to toss a good boomerang!

Another drawing of these two, aren't they adorable?
Tumblr media
Here's Owen bother poor Lisa Snart aka Golden Glider. Owen can be a little insensitive, tho he's never actually malicious in intent (usually). Always thought it was weird that Lisa was considered a candidate for Owen's mother, she didn't seem old enough for that (Owen was like early twenties). Anyways Lisa thinks he's an annoying little twerp...
Tumblr media
...and not the only one. Here's Owen bothering poor Jesse. Also you can see I messed up on her shirt design, wasn't really thinking about what I was drawing I guess. I do that sometimes lol.
Tumblr media
On the nature of Owen's and Jason's relationship, they seem to quite like each other. Neither of them had many friends before the team, and find easy camaraderie in having simple boyish fun together, which is something they kinda needed in life. You'll sometimes see them making complex plans for the next prank (Lori is invited as well).
In team dynamics, Jason can find Owen tendency to not take fights seriously kinda annoying. While Owen can sometimes disregard Jason's leadership (should Jason be leader that day I mean) due to him being younger. Friction isn't common between them though, perhaps because they got a lot in common.
From being caught between opposing morality, difficulty in finding a niche in the DC comics, even in trying to discover who their mothers are. Its can be validating to know people who understand what your going through.
Tumblr media
Little more focus on Owen's relations, I said that Barry has been trying to steer Owen towards good but I also think that Barry just thinks that Owen is just a fun little guy in general. I'd think they get along pretty well, Wally looks so pissed tho. There was this one comic where Hal had Wally as a sidekick for a day and Barry was pretty jealous. Guess the reverse is happening here. Wally's a favored target for Owen's pranks, so this whole situation is just very annoying to him.
Here's Digger introducing Owen to the rogues, Leonard looks befuddled at all this (Digger got a girl preggo? crazy).
Wanted to have Digger and Owen watch cartoons together, so I looked up Australian cartoons, found something called Bluey. Apparently it's super popular, even adults like it. So I found some free cartoons on youtube and yeah. It really is that good. Look it up if you want to see some fun, relaxing cartoons with smart writing!
Tumblr media
To finish off this mass of words, here's Owen being a goofball with Eddie and Jason. I'm slowly finding that Owen's got a pretty fun dynamic with most anyone I draw him with. So that's been fun.
All this and I still haven't gone into Meloni and Bart, but it's best if I leave that for later. Anyways, hoped you like all that!
*About Owen's age, the comics never specified what his age actually was. All I know he's in his twenties but still younger than Dick's age group. Young enough to be unsure of his place in the world, but old enough that his 'relationship' with Kara to be weird. I guess it'd be less weird in my au with a smaller age gap, but that's still not happening.

Hope you don't mind us asking more details regarding this scrapped version of the molly comic that was discussed, but what was Jo like in that version? Also were there any characters from that particular version that did not return for Molly's Future Mishaps? (Or haven't yet if you have any particular plans to repurpose them.)
Jo was basically like his chapter 1 self, but throughout the entire story... and kind of like Elysia, honestly. Easily angered and quite self absorbed (much more so in this version). In the first draft, he actually was working as a time traveler officially... no missed-interview-watch-stealing here! He had taken it upon himself to track down Molly and attempt to drag him back to his proper place in the future, which Molly continuously refused to do due to liking 21st century Earth much more than their original time period. Jo was originally written to be an occasionally recurring Saturday morning cartoon type of antagonist, and in all honesty he worked as such a good foil to Molly that that was also a big reason why I wanted to rewrite the story... Jo was just too fun of a character, he needed to be a main character right from the start!
He appeared in chapter 2 to bring Molly back to their proper place in time (plus punish them for unlicensed time traveling), but Molly convinces Jo to take them back in time to the events of chapter 1 one week prior, so that they can prevent their past self from doing various dumb things and prove themselves as a time travel in the process. It doesn't go well, of course, and they end up causing a handful of their problems from chapter 1 (like a BTTF2 situation). After some time travel shenanigans, Molly witnesses a past version of Jo faceplant on the ground, and so it makes the two even in terms of stupid actions. Other things I had planned for this first draft that I never got around to making was: Jo and Molly having some kind of long-distance rivalry, where Molly would write letters poking fun and teasing Jo and put 'em in time capsules to be discovered in the far far future by Jo; Jo quitting time travel work and living in the past as Molly's unbearable roommate (sort of happened in MFM, but in a much nicer way LOL); The two of them accidentally factory-resetting a time travel watch, which sends them to a big empty timeless void (...kind of obvious what that plotline turned into in the final story)
One other character in the original version that didn't make it into MFM was Molly's original companion for the story, a doctor lady named Berry. She was a human doctor who was pretty much just trying to help Molly get on their feet in this world, and she was a bit of a quirky zany character. With her being the town's doctor, she knew just about everyone and they all liked her a lot... a thing that Molly was originally planned to be a bit sadly-envious about, being a socially inept future creature and all. She's basically an extremely early version of August, but the two are hardly alike aside from being "the human one". I consider Berry to be August's briefly-mentioned sister, but I didn't plan to have her make an appearance in the current comic. I kind of regret that lol, it would've been a nice callback. Maybe I'll try to draw her in the modern day MFM style sometime

I've been wanting to comment on this comic for days, but I haven't really taken the time to actually do that until now. I think all the brain power I've been spending on writing ~15,000 character long AO3 comments has left me a little winded and inarticulate, but I still want to give this comic its due praise. It's an amazing comic both in terms of art and writing, and I find your interpretations of Dungeon Meshi's world and characters to be very interesting. They don't always click with me, but that's like half the fun of these kinds of stories! They can be interpreted in several different ways, and I love finding out what others think of certain characters or story aspects! I'd like to apologize in advance if my ramblings end up being a bit dumb. My mind's all foggy so I'm bound to gloss over things I would've pointed out otherwise, and even the things I do end up pointing out may not be pointed out quite how I want 'em to, but I'll try my best! I've been ITCHING to type this up, so I'm not waiting any longer. I'll try my best to keep things tidy!
The beginning of the comic has been magnificently done. I love that the text bubbles slowly fade into frame like that, starting at the very top of the page. It's a clever way to imply that Beabell has been screaming for a while, and with how blank Chilchuck's stare is, I feel it might also be a good way to illustrate Chilchuck honing back in on reality after briefly dissociating. As for the panel itself—and this is something I could say about every panel, so I'm most likely going to sound like a broken record well before I reach the halfway point of this comic—it looks beautiful. The snow, Beabell's hot breath condensing in the cold air, Chilchuck's Thousand-yard Stare, the background, everything looks magnificent in my opinion. Your artwork never fails to impress me! A really cool detail that I appreciate is that throughout this entire scene, Chilchuck remains dead silent and wide-eyed. He just… stares. It's haunting, and I don't think any of this would've carried nearly as much emotion if he had been doing anything else. I also love Beabell's ever so slightly wobbly text box as she tells someone that "Mr. Jays needs help" as though Chilchuck's dad isn't dead. It's such good dialogue. Her expression in that panel was also pulled off excellently, in my opinion. (Again, I could say this for every single panel, so I might end up repeating myself a little. Your fault for drawing so epically.) The silence that follows when the man Beabell asked for help goes to check on Chil's old man is palpable. Not a single sound, save for the freezing wind and Beabell's sobbing; and the way it's followed up with nothing but silent tears when he steps back outside was perfect. Genuinely perfect. I do not see any way you could've written or drawn this better at all. Not a single way. It's perfect.
Oooh, that fade to black was so well done! It's such a jarring, yet fitting transition, to go from Chilchuck just staring in silent shock, to loudly cheering as though he wasn't profoundly affected by what happened back there. Wonderful shading, by the way! The lighting in the bar is noticeably different from the outside. It seems the majority of the light is coming from a window behind Chilchuck, and I think it's very impressive how you pulled that off! As for the scene itself, I love it immensely. Chilchuck seems so casual about things on the surface, taking a swig of alcohol while preaching how his dad—who drank himself to death and whose parting words to Chilchuck were something akin to punching a guy in the gut and taking his liver as a treat—lived fast doing what he loved. He drank himself to death, and this is what Chilchuck preaches to the boisterous cheers of his fellow half-foots. That he died doing what he loved. Not that he was too upset to give a proper speech at his funeral, not that his dad's last words to him will haunt him forever, not any of that. I don't know if it's intentional, but Chilchuck's smile in that panel where he raises his mug does not look genuine at all. It just looks so strained, like he's genuinely investing every remaining ounce of his energy into keeping that smile up for as long as necessary, but then the second they stop looking at him, his face falls like a sack of bricks. He doesn't even actually drink after that either; he just raises his mug before relenting. His dad died while drinking that. This scene was honestly really poignant to me, and you deserve some serious kudos for pulling this off.
Something I appreciate about your writing is how you allow characters to be actually mean sometimes. You're certainly not the only one to do it, but I love how you pull it off in particular. It's nice, to read a conflict like this, where characters can show to the reader how badly they were impacted by recent events. Nobody is perfect, and especially in circumstances like these I think it is of paramount importance to let characters speak out of line every once in a while. Let them be angry, let them lash out, let them be unfair. Sometimes we can't parse our very real, genuine feelings in a way that is fair to others. That's… human. It makes this comic so much more impactful to me, because the way Beabell lashes out at Chilchuck might be unfair, but it makes her feel so much more real. Plus, again, the lighting, the expressions, all the snow, the background, the clothing, every single minute little detail you put into these comics, it's all so amazing to me. You're an incredible artist! As I already said, every single panel is pure perfection, and carries so much emotion it's enough to bring me to tears! I especially love Beabell's expression when she says "Oh, really, we're doing this again?" I've been staring at it for 10 minutes trying to think of a way to articulate exactly why I love it so much, but I just can't. Take my word for it, though, I love it immensely. Also, the idea Chilchuck's family blames him for what happened is a brutal little detail that makes this scene all the more devastating. The cherry on top of all this though, is Chilchuck stomping off, only to wait for his friend. Like, genuinely. I think that's such a beautiful and poignant way to cap off that scene, especially with how Beabell just remains silent afterwards, with what seems to me like a very telling look on her face. The look of someone who realises they've been a jerk, but can't find it in themselves to apologise right then and there. It's something I'm sure everyone and their mother can relate to, and the way you pulled it off, again, is freakin' immaculate. I don't know how you do it.
The ending is so beautiful as well. I love how you pulled everything off here. If I weren't crying before, the floodgates would've surely opened by this point. What a magnificent comic you've drawn! I highly doubt I've done it any justice in my barely lucid and weirdly unhinged state, but I still had a lot of fun typing this up, especially since it was a good exuse to view this comic up close and look at all the little deets. Thank you for continuing to draw all of these comics. Heck, thank you for drawing art in general. I love looking at all of it so much… It's a privilege to get to look at art this beautiful! I wanted to comment this, but I think I might just reblog it instead. Might make it less of a pain to read. Either way, I hope you have a jolly good weekend ahead of you, chief.

it really does blow my mind how phantoms didn't touch on how bart going missing would WRECK the flashfam. they've lost wally AND joan in the past four years, you can't tell me the possibility of losing bart wouldn't shake them so fucking badly. i know this season didn't focus on bart or the flashfam, but they went over two weeks not knowing if he was ALIVE, and we don't get to see any of it beyond the first few seconds of jay coming back to an empty house? seriously??? i feel cheated
SAME! honestly its ridiculous, like ik that some things go without saying and its a premise that YJ operates on quite a bit (which often I understand) but with Jays involvement in Rockets arc and Barts with the Legion, at least being shown something would've been nice.
Like, I get the impression that Greg and co feel that what they've shown with Jay coming back to an empty house and at the end Dinah revealing (very offhandedly lol) that hes going through mental difficulties speaks volumes to how he would've coped with Bart going missing especially with how they're not “the main characters” of Phantoms, but considering the ridiculously long Bug Love montage (no disrespect to Foragers they're cute but was that incredibly long exposé on their courtship necessary, lets be real, nah lol) or how they dedicated an ENTIRE episode to the Markovia plot which easily couldve been covered as a background thread of headlines throughout the season (without the need of abandoning all of the Halo/Brion/Fury scenes which would've taken up instead what, less than half an episodes worth of screen time instead), then honestly there was easily space for some indication of the mess that would've taken place with the Flash Fam, especially considering their history with YJ. (and whilst we r at it some proper outsiders plot too), so yeah its just wild that they didn't really touch further on the subject.
If we by some force of nature do manage to get a Season 5, with the indication of Sanctuary plot being explored (a really messed up comics plot of Heroes in Crisis with huge potential but controversial execution largely involving Wally) then a lot of people are theorising that Jay would take on the role as (comic spoilers: skip to next paragraph if u don't wanna read ------------ Wally dying in the event or well something dramatically similar) and then Barry and Bart possibly being on the investigative/involved side of things (comic spoilers: skip to next paragraph if u don't wanna read ------------ turns out it was Wally who murdered a bunch of ppl, Flashpoint time travel stuff etc, u get the gist, though I am doubtful YJ would follow the exact premise, so they would loosely adapt some kind of alternative variation of the plot, especially considering speed force involvement) with the rest of the cast members too.
Which leads to the premise that maybe they are setting up some kind of Flashfam plot for the next season, but I don't want to be the 100th broken record within the fandom (lol) where ppl theorise this every season lmfao, but who knows theres no harm in speculating/theorising/ coming up with stories.
Entirely off topic but another way to gauge plots throughout the season is through voice actors, if one of the characters of the voice actors appears in an episode then theres a significantly higher chance their other characters would appear too. If we do manage to get a Season 5 where people think the fight with Apokolips/Darkseid will take a centre stage, then G Gordon Godfrey should appear quite a bit and he has the same voice actor as Flash in Outsiders, which would lead room to him being featured too. So...... who knows lol
