I would love to have a dog too, but I can't afford one right now either. Do you have a favorite breed?

sooo manyyyyy I mean all dogs are #valid (and by no means, does this mean I think they’re all perfect angels bc They Aren’t but anyway)

First of all I don’t put a lot of stock in “breed characteristics” generally - I don’t completely disregard them, but I do feel like it depends very much on the individual dog, which is why I’ve talked a lot about aesthetics in the below posts. In terms of personality I’d like a cuddly dog, not too demanding in terms of physical activity requirements/restlessness. I’d also like a smart and obedient dog, but one with personality - I find a lot of people these days try to stop their dogs from ever barking and stuff like that and I really hate that. It’s a dog. It has to be a dog!! I’d like a loyal dog that trusts me to let it do its thing until Enough is Enough, and won’t lose their shit in an effort to “protect” me if I’m telling them to cut it out lol. I mean, this is all a dream world, right? But that’s the kind of personality & relationship I would want with any dog.

In terms of my favourite breeds from that point, I find that I mostly like the ones that will herd you; collies, kelpies, german sheppards, blue heelers, huskies, that kind of jazz (i said it was a lot didn’t I?) I’ve found I don’t tend to go as much for the ones with the animal-fighting sort of snout or stockier builds. Each to their own of course but in terms of my faves it’s babes like this:

but in terms of actually getting a dog I would a) prefer to get 2 so they don’t get lonely while I’m away and therefore b) would go with a small dog because I would feel more capable of caring for it/them in terms of expense, space, confidence in training, and a whole bunch of things. I never used to be much of a small dog person and I find “little yappy” dogs kind of annoying (though ofc I still love them bc i’m a huge sap). I also don’t particularly like the look of maltese, poodles and those kinds, purely on an aesthetic level, but I love pomeranians, corgis, and that kind of thing.

One of the pairs I was looking at the other night in my little dog adoption fantasy land was Coco & Candy who are a real life pair of Jack Russel x Malteses up for adoption in Western Australia right now (link)

I’d say probably my FAVOURITE breed if I had to pick one would be Dachshunds, largely because I’ve looked after a family of 3 for a while and I’m in love with them. They have a lot of attitude, and you’ve gotta watch out for those back problems, but idk, in my experience, they’ve got a lot that I like in a smaller package. And I’m slowly building up my immunity to those eyes!!
