itās been almost a year nowā¦ is the bg3 fandom finally ready to talk about how galeās āhubrisā is the sole product of actively feeding his insecurities further and straight up denying him help & guidance when he was at his lowest and needed it most. itās not one of his core traits and never was. he isnāt some closeted power hungry monster that is just waiting to be enabled. what he wants is admiration, recognition and acceptance. which is also what he sought from mystra before the orb disaster happened. he had no desire whatsoever to become a god himself or challenge her rule, he simply wanted to be seen as sufficient in her eyes (āto serve her betterā). to be as equal as he could possibly be in a relationship with a literal deity. he has a deep passion for magic and knowledge that affects almost all areas of his life and enjoys the display thereof. he wants to be the smartest person in the room and enjoys when his work is recognized. he may be perceived as arrogant when it comes to his skill, but he IS NOT hubristic. it truly takes so little for him to be wholly content.
#this is such a fundamental misinterpretation of his character and really grinds my gears#i feel like we really gloss over the fact that he sees the crown as an alternative to NOT DYING#and not something he secretly wanted all along#an option to finally prove that he is āworthy enoughā#either of himself or the person heās with#whenever another post pops up talking about how astarion and gale are so similar another angel loses its wings#bg3#astarion was always corrupt long before cazador happened. and even after he seeks power for safety and control#(and partly because of the fun of it)#meanwhile gale? my guy just wants to live. read books. eat good food and be a great wizard recognized for his hard work#gale dekarios#it speaks#neme rambles#i forgot to censor my tags but iām on mobile so oops

on nagito komaeda and love
I just think itās sort of funny that for a character whose (arguably) most well-recognized CG is this:Ā
![Tumblr media](https://64.media.tumblr.com/0d98bc644a3438367c82a19386bfc980/3d619e79b7960b2d-e3/s540x810/be8b23c15980f5ab4add4b814599b2b9aa1feb75.jpg)
komaedaās narrative so heavily centers love. and I donāt just say this because Iāve had komahina brainrot for years (though this is true!!). even if you donāt care about komahina, itās tough to deny komaeda is a walking tragedy in large part because of the role that love plays in his life. his characterization is driven by the way his luck has denied him love, and how he seeks it out regardless. in that sense, I think that without understanding komahina as at least one-sided, you miss out on one of the juiciest, most miserable pieces of komaedaās character development.
tldr; a love-centered reading of komaeda makes sense, recognizing komahina as āa thingā in DR2 (whether you ship it or not) is pretty important to understanding how komaeda operates, and Iāll try to prove it right here under this page break!!
Part 1: Komaedaās Love Life (or, his life without love)
I think itās safe to assume that if you clicked here, you know about komaedaās absurdly miserable, tumultuous childhood, but Iāll do a quick recap just in case! meteor kills his parents on a plane, he inherits a ton of money. heās kidnapped by a serial killer, he finds a winning lottery ticket in the garbage bag heās thrown out in. heās diagnosed with terminal cancer and dementia, he gets into hopeās peak.
in his free time events, komaeda *explicitly* frames his luck cycle as something that takes away the people he loves. it only ātakes actionā against him after his relatives have died (for the sake of this essay, letās assume that komaeda loved his parents, or would have at least been hurt by their passing). by way of other close connectionsā¦ well, his wording here implies that by the time of his diagnosis, he didnāt really have anybody in his life.Ā
either komaeda didnāt allow himself to get close to anyone after the meteor incident, or he did, and they were taken away by his luck. at some point during his childhood, komaeda learned he should view himself as a death sentence.
so, how does this loss of love shape the komaeda we know? Iāll talk about this in terms of four of his defining (and connected!) traits in DR2 canon ā the ones that really make his actions make sense: his self-loathing, his hope-seeking, his learned helplessness, and his certainty that his existence poses a threat to those around him. komaedaās experience with loss makes him view himself as a source of death, which in turn fuels these tenets of his character. ultimately, his loss and the complexes that arise from it give him good incentive to push people away.
his self-loathing
komaeda hates himself. he views himself as worthless outside of his potential to serve as a āstepping stoneā for the hope of the ultimates. he claims that this is driven by his beliefs around talent, which are in turn linked to the way his worldview rests on viewing hope as āabsolute good.ā the talentless (himself included) are only good for advancing the hope of the talented. still, his self-loathing is a bit more personal than that. take what he says and dig just below the surface, and itās a clean cut trauma response all the way down. which leads us directly toā¦
his hope-seeking
komaeda is willing to do literally anything to serve hope. on the island, this (in short) means dying. this is where I prod at komaedaās reasoning a bit more: komaedaās willingness to act the way he does in canon also stems from his belief that his dying would be a net good for the world. his existence kills the people around him. his illness will kill him anyway. he has less than no value, and hope is invaluable. to go out for the sake of hope would give his wretched life purpose; itās his dream come true.
and itās no mystery why komaeda cares so much about hope: again, itās a coping mechanism! komaedaās belief that all bad luck is a necessary precursor for good luck and that hope will always triumph over despair is (as he himself says!) the only reason heās managed to stay alive. Iāll say it again because I really canāt emphasize it enough āĀ komaeda thinks that just by existing, he kills the people he loves. ouch!
learned helplessness / his existence as a threat
komaeda has, essentially, learned to submit to his luck cycle. all bad luck is good luck in the end ā isnāt that amazing?! almost paradoxically, heās hyper-vigilant about the negative impact his luck has on those around him. this is a tricky one. I make sense of it this way: komaedaās perception of how much his luck impacts the people close to him isnāt inflated, like, at all. the supernatural way the world bends around komaeda to screw him over really does pose a danger to himself and others, and he takes measures to minimize that danger. his stated acceptance of his luck cycle isā¦ well, again, heās coping.Ā
![Tumblr media](https://64.media.tumblr.com/da1a4c9ad05690280bcb504c6ae33401/3d619e79b7960b2d-65/s540x810/39da8f360e54794b6224d9ca56f3df1b3edefe5e.jpg)
if komaeda really thought that all bad luck is ultimately good luck, he wouldnāt try to protect his classmates from his bad luck. but, as we see in island mode, he does!
![Tumblr media](https://64.media.tumblr.com/362b2286414e3b4e824fd77b0c3b1e9d/3d619e79b7960b2d-81/s540x810/67876e9ec703e3df57f5fb3ad585332106157745.jpg)
but really, who could blame komaeda for lying to himself? Iāll restate the facts. komaeda thinks that luck is absolute power. he says that heās powerless against it. his luck has taken his family, and itās left him with nothing but money that he doesnāt want. heās certain heās a curse, and thereās no end to that in sight: so long as komaeda exists, heāll keep on losing ā murdering ā everything he loves.Ā
![Tumblr media](https://64.media.tumblr.com/af9762bc38c413253c0c5eb4ac554052/3d619e79b7960b2d-a8/s540x810/f922d0165e5af953334183222d6ebfb15d5eb1af.jpg)
in the face of all of that despair, what can you do but abandon your self-esteem and pray for something good to come out of all of it? how else could somebody possibly survive carrying that burden, truly believing that load will never be lightened?
tldr; komaeda thinks his existence is a threat, and a big chunk of his personality is a frankensteined way of surviving the pain that comes with that. still, we should question how much of his worldview komaeda has really internalized without inner conflict.Ā
Part 2: Enter Hajime Hinata
we get some answers on that front when we see that despite the clear and obvious danger it poses, nagito komaeda still finds himself falling hard for hajime hinata. thatās really, really loud.
Iāll preface this part by saying that you donāt need to actively ship komahina to understand what Iām trying to get at here. this said, Iāll be recapping an argument youāve almost definitely seen before: komahina is definitely āa thingā āĀ at the very least as a one-sided thing. to this, Iāll add the (perhaps bold?) claim that without recognizing that much as true, youāre missing out on a big part of what makes komaeda so interesting.
komaedaās FTEs make it abundantly clear that komaeda has feelings for hinata. apart from his famed failed love confession, the fact that komaeda is willing to allow hinata to get close enough to learn about his views on hope and luck is telling.Ā
(the smoking gun here hinges on trusting that komaeda was telling the truth during the time you spent with him; in so many words, that he only lied about lying. so, for the sake of argument, letās assume this is true! thereās good proof for it, anyway.)
if you read his final FTE as komaeda flashing his soul to hinata and making a decision at the very last second to retreat, turning to old coping mechanisms to protect hinata from his luck, itās sort of a komahina bombshell. that capitulation spells out for us that komaeda understands sharing his life experiences with hinata to be one of the most intimate things he could possibly do.
he recognizes the exact moment he lets hinata get too close āĀ when his life story is finally told āĀ and he does what heās learned he needs to do to get them both out of that situation safely: he tries to make hinata hate him, and tells himself (and hinata!) that he did it for the sake of hope.
(and yet, komaeda let hinata approach him every FTE, knowing damn well that they were both playing with fireā¦ very interesting.)
now, letās say you donāt consider the FTEs to be integral to canon. I mean, you can really easily miss out on all of komaedaās content if you choose not to hang out with him in chapter 1! so, for the skeptic, in the unskippable main story, komaeda tells hinata this:
komaeda cares about hinata despite everything. and I really, truly mean despite everything. at this point in the story, the fact that he still cares about hinata calls into question basically every single one of his core beliefs. heās read his final dead room prize ā not only does hinata not have a talent, we can presume that komaeda also knows hinata became ultimate despair along with the rest of them.Ā
hinata has continually sought out komaedaās company, even though komaeda knows himself to be worthless at best, lethal at worst. komaeda was willing to let him get closer, even though he knows how dangerous that is for hinata. he canāt help but let hinata try to know him.Ā
isnāt he awful? to want what he knows he canāt have, even though that wanting has never done anything but cause pain? heās really the lowest of the low, to love someone who destroyed the world, who makes him question the views that will allow him to do the only good thing heās ever been able to do for it: to die for hope.Ā
and yet, itās a nod to how incredibly capable of love komaeda is that heās still willing to reach out for it, no matter how many times itās burned him in the past, and how much it hurts him in the present to want it. he understands more than anyone that his feelings can only result in disaster. reading komaeda as someone who canāt help but go on loving anyway makes his story hurt so much worse.Ā
but, you miss a whole lot of that without an eye for komahina. seeing hinata as the eye of komaedaās emotional hurricane (and keeping tabs on their connection accordingly) allows us to glimpse past the cracks in komaedaās front. we see that komaedaās worldview is less stable than he presents it as āĀ hinata is where komaedaās coping mechanisms, for better or worse, run up against a wall. that tends to be uncomfortable for a guy whoās just barely coping in the first place. then again, growth is supposed to be uncomfortable, isnāt it?
Part 3: The Future He Chooses
so, all of this considered, I think one of the most interesting ways you can flesh komaeda out post-canon is by asking how heād find himself willing to accept love. whether that love is from hinata or the ultimates, whether itās platonic or romantic, love is the thing that komaeda wants AND fears in equal measure more than anything. itās the source of his self-loathing and his obsession with hope. itās the reason heās lived the way that he has for so long ā lonely, and afraid of being anything but.
getting into a relationship wouldnāt solve komaedaās problems for him, and thatās a good thing.Ā it would force him to confront old ones, and probably create dozens of new issues for him, too. writing him through that makes for great character study!
hinata (or anyone else, for that matter) canāt love komaeda into loving himself, but he can give him a shoulder to cry on while he works through 22 years of fear and sorts through the wreckage of a worldview thatās long since stopped serving him. I donāt think his progress would be linear. but, I think that he could do it. komaeda learning to accept care is what his healing looks like.Ā
(well. and physically recovering from cancer and dementia. but thatās neither here nor there!)
a post-canon komaeda learning to love narrative is also in line with the themes of DR2. hinata leads the survivors out of the neo world program because he makes the decision to choose his own future, creating a new version of āhopeā for himself and his classmates. likewise, komaeda can make the decision to save himself. that is, if he trusts himself enough to actually touch and hold the thing that heās never been able to stop reaching out for, anyway.
after all, hinata is lucky too. (and if it turns out he isnātā¦ y'all like angst fics, right?)
(shoutout to @cynopter for looking this over and confirming that I'm not spouting nonsense <33 thank you for reading my thesis of the week <33)
#ngl I'm a *teensy* bit nervous posting komaeda meta on here because you komaedologists really know your stuff!#if someone's done this already 1) oops and 2) I really hope I contributed to the existing convo at least a little#this essay was inspired by my friend's 3.5 hour long plot-heavy nagito playlist (chronological birth to death)#which I listened to in its entirety on a bus ride the other day#got me thinking wow. after everything. how on earth is he still capable of love? that's incredible. that's painful. fucking hell.#also if you read all of this I adore you! because what the hell I got so carried away#komahina#nagito komaeda#hajime hinata#danganronpa 2

Did you know 11/11 is Pocky day ? I drew something for this special day hehe
Bonus with Flint under cut
I think Flint would lose this one. Volkner seems to love Pocky a bit too much to afford to lose lmao.
And then Flint would have to buy him more Pocky (he should've thought before agreeing to Volkner's terms lmao). And as Volkner eats them, Flint would stare with sadness in his eyes.
Maybe then Volkner would share, so all is well that ends well except for the disappointed audience (but it's on them for being nosy)
#volkner#gym leader volkner#volkner pokemon#elite four flint#pokemon flint#pokemon#pokemon fanart#pocky day#cheesecake801art#my art#should I tag this as ship so the IRL fans can also be disappointed that they didn't kiss in a pocky game#ignitionshipping#feeling kind of evil rn#but I think the shippers would still like this#i hope#btw if you're curious#i don't really ship them but i don't mind the ship#they are homies#I like them close#romantic or not#so if you like the ship and wanna interpret my Volkner/Flint interactions as romantic you can I don't mind#in my mind even as a couple they'd act like homies as usual anyway lmao#anyway I talked to much here aldkd I'm just happy to post about them again#i wrote for so long that it's not even Pocky day anymore oops

Thereās something so ethereal about when the Losers first defeat Pennywise in the book. Theyāre chased into the sewers, forced to descend and continue on. Even when theyāre crawling on their stomachs, even when theyāre faced with the giant eyeball, they still have to keep moving forward. Henry Bowers is behind and Pennywise ahead. But the Losers know what they have to do. The sewers become like a cathedral, light flowing in through an unknown source. The wall is hundreds of feet tall, now. At the very bottom, a mere speck among the sheer magnitude, is a door. A door meant for a child. The symbol is different for every one of them. But they enter, even knowing whatās behind it. An unnatural glow floods their vision. Pennywise is there, in the form of a massive spider. Itās the closest thing to Its true form the human mind can comprehend. Even still, the dangerous radiance of the Deadlights can be somewhat seen when you look close enough. The spider is only a weak illusion. Its true power lays beyond. The massive chamber is covered in a deadly web. This web contains the bodies of all of Its victims. Mercifully, George is not there. He has already been buried. And it is Georgeās death that draws Bill forward. He steps closer to the abhorrent spider, only to be thrown out of his body. Thrown out of space and time into the infinite darkness of the macroverse. Hurtling past obsidian, obsidian black, while It constantly taunts him. Until he finally manages to sink his tongue into Its. āHe thrusts his fists against the post and still insists he sees the ghost.ā This is the phrase that leads to Its apparent demise. The Turtle tells Bill to finish it, that this victory may never be replicated. But the others say itās dying, say itās dead. Theyāve won. But they havenāt, not yet. And not really. Theyāre still stuck a quarter mile under the ground, maybe even deeper. Even Eddie with his internal compass canāt find the way out. So Bev lets each of them come to her, shedding their childhood and her virginity. Theyāre able to leave now, but not without being forced too grow up too fast. When theyāre finally out, Stan grabs a piece of broken glass off the ground. With life all around them, he pretends to slit his wrists. A cruel imitation of his later years, with those bloody crosses etched into his wrists. The red liquid dripping onto the floor. But Stan isnāt fated to die yet, and simply cuts his hand. He cuts both of Billās, and then cuts the rest of the Losers. They pledge to defeat It, if It ever comes back. This promise is the last time the circle will ever be completed. The last time all seven of them will ever be together. And they know it. And so they slowly dwindle away, prepared to meet again 27 years later. But only six of them will come. Only one will remember. At the end of everything, five will remain. But none will remain. A beautiful and melancholic ending.
#I haveā¦thoughts about the book#Can you tell?#I love the movie but the movie could never be this beautiful and ethereal#I do genuinely wonder if Coraline is based off the book because the whole door and spider thing is uncannily similar#Anyways this post is really long oops#It#it book#it novel#it 1986#the losers club#losers club

pick me, choose me, love me

Eddie wants to scream. Eddie wants to talk to Buck. There are questions he should ask - Do you know when the bleeding started? How long has it been? How bad does it hurt? Are you injured anywhere else? There is a conversation he wants to have - If I leave you here I donāt know that youāll be alive when I get back. There are protocols, in disaster situations. If you can only save one person, you save the one most likely to survive. Beyond protocol, you always fucking save the kid. Beyond that, it's our kid. Itās our fucking kid, itās Christopher, and I am going to get him to the surface and in doing so I am going to leave you for dead. But itās Buck, and they never really needed words to talk, and Buck is still looking at him, and Eddie knows what he'd say. He'd downplay the injury. He knows the protocol. And heād already said it, damned him out loud, heās going to take you back up top and then come back for me.

Iām a sex-repulsed ace, and reading the latest chapter of 666 (as well as your analysis here on Tumblr) made me realize that I have been subconsciously thinking about MY OWN sexuality from an allo perspective? And that it has kinda been messing me up?? Like, ever since I learned that sexual attraction was actually a Thing and that itās Important To People, I had been carrying around a fear of being deficient in some way and not being able to love to the same extent as allos. (1)
Even though I know logically thatās complete garbage and totally untrue, I felt left out of the loop because people seemed to care strongly about this thing I couldnāt even imagine. Whenever it looked like a relationship might happen I panicked for a reason that I couldnāt understand. But now Iām starting to realize that itās because I was subconsciously terrified of an āulterior motiveā behind the other personās reasons for wanting to be with me. (2) That part of the reason they even cared was because of something I donāt experience. So thank you, because this realization just clicked into place while reading your work. The thing is, this way of thinking was just internalized in such a way that I didnāt even realize it was there until literally this week. And I think youāre right; one of the main reasons behind that is because Iāve always consumed media written from an allo perspective. (3) If ace/aros are shown at all, theyāre depicted as ālackingā and their character development usually revolves around being āfixedā by the story. When I was ~10 years old my mom sometimes let me watch the Big Bang Theory with her (looking back, maybe not the best decision). Anyways, there was one episode deep into the series where Sheldon (who for the past nineish seasons was probably the closest thing to mainstream ace rep) has sex with his girlfriend for the first time. (4) Afterwards, he says something along the lines of āthat was better than I thought it would beā, and itās presented as a Very Good Thing and a big step in their relationship. I think a lifetime of stuff like that makes it very easy to internalize aphobia and feel like the lesser part of the relationship. Or to feel like the other partner is making a huge sacrifice to be with you. That got wayy too long, sorry. All that was just a lot of words to say that I appreciate you. Take care of yourself!(5)
The portrayal of asexuality that you see in media being almost exclusively as you described is very tedious to me because it presumes that something is inherently lacking in aro/aceness rather than that feeling of "lacking" being something that is induced by societal norms. Actually, one of the things that I find additionally alienating is that fandom spaces specifically have been getting better and better about ace characters - but got damn does fandom not jive with aromanticism. Like, a character doesn't want to fuck? That's becoming a liiiittle more fine, it's 2024, we stan consent. But not shipping someone romantically?? Not so easy, now.
I'm glad that my work has been something that resonated with you in this respect! Alastor cares a lot about his reputation as a demon but is pretty blatantly a person who could not possibly give less of a shit about being "wrong" for not being experiencing romantic or sexual attraction. The explanation Viv gave at one point for his own understanding of himself (that he thinks he's just "waiting for the right woman") actually stuck out to me a lot because it's a very "well, nothing is wrong with me for not feeling anything, it's the world that's failed to produce a suitable person" perspective.
But having that kind of confident perspective of your own rightness in the world is really not often portrayed in media, or even in fandom, which even ten years ago was still in the throes of standardizing "Oh, no! Me, gay? These feelings are so wrong!" style m/m content and is honestly not that far off from essentially that for aro/ace characters.
Anyway, all of that is to say that there's not yet much out there that doesn't frame allo/amatonormative values as the default that "even aro/ace people can (and should want to) achieve," and that it's really fun to write a fic that is unequivocally from the perspective of a character who is aroace and doesn't see it as even remotely a fault in himself. Does he have moments where he's a little confused and trying to process how things fit for him? Absolutely. But he just doesn't strike me as the kind of guy who thinks he owes romance to Vox of all people, hahaha. I've written him trying to conform to allo/amatonormativity more with Mimzy, because I think the social standards of their time could push him into it, but Vox? Absolutely not, he does not respect Vox enough for it to even enter his mind.
And then, on the other hand, writing it from an aroace perspective centers the way that romantic and sexual interest can feel like a betrayal of a good thing. With a character like Alastor, it frames romantic and sexual attraction the same alien way that we usually see aromanticism and asexuality framed as.
In the end, this is just one of a plethora of different experiences that aro/ace people can have, but it's one that I really wanted to see represented more, so I'm very happy to write it. I'm glad that you're enjoying it!

actually. @moonlarked you wanted someone to talk about near & light as parallels? cuz uh...
ok SO, my big hot take on near is something like this: one of the most common criticisms i see about near is that he is simply too apathetic/bored/uncaring/etc, and that because he is not as emotionally invested as L, his win against light doesn't feel nearly (lol) as satisfying as it could've been. this is a view that often frustrates me, but for a very particular reasonā namely, while i think it is somewhat accurate in content, i think it misses a lot of important context (and also misses a lot of the importance of light's character arc, but we'll get to that much later).
one of the most important things to remember about the wammy's kids is that, whether they like it or not, each and every one of them is defined almost entirely through their relationship to L. this is perhaps more obvious in the case of characters like BB and mello, who are very Aware of this shadow being cast upon them and react in very overt, emotional ways (e.g. becoming a literal serial killer out of seemingly pure spite & desire to be noticed, idolizing him but in a very emotionally complicated, kinda detached sorta way, etc), but it is true for Every wammy's kid, purely because of how the house itself functions. these kids are being raised to be L's successorā the greatest (and second greatest, and third greatest) detective on the planet. this is the ultimate goal hanging over every one of their heads, and it places a constant pressure on every kid there.
oftentimes, i think (perhaps both out of story and in it, as well?) people get so caught up in comparing near to L that they forget he also falls under this umbrellaā only, for near, his position is slightly different because he actually somewhat succeeds at the task? like, yeah, L never gets the chance to officially call near his successor, but between the fact that he's constantly called the #1 kid at wammy's and that he. literally does actually end up becoming the new L after kira, i think it's always been pretty clear what his path was going to be.
going back to my starting point, this is one of the main ways that near makes a really good parallel to light in my mind, specifically the light that we see right at the start of the series. in both cases, near and pre-DN light, we see a kid who has succeeded at everything they've been handed, and more notably, we see a kid who is bored out of his fucking mind looking at the prospects of what he's got.
in the case of light, this is maybe a little more realistic/easy to understandā light does well in academics, he does well in sports, he does well with people. he is likely to follow in his father's footsteps with something criminal justice/police/law related, but even if he diverges from that path it likely won't be too big of a deal, as he has shown himself to be capable in enough areas that he's likely to succeed no matter what. by all measurable standards, light's doing pretty good at the start of the series. and yetā there is something so distinctly and inherently Bland about his life before he gets the DN. i've said before that light wouldn't call the DN a curse even if he wanted to, but i think in that moment when he's telling ryuk he disagrees w/ his father after visiting him in the hospital, when he says, "I've never once considered finding that notebook and gaining this power a misfortune. In fact, it's made me happier than I've ever been." (ch.22) he's still getting at something real and truthful.
again, going back to my equating of boredom with depression in this seriesā light's life is pretty good by all measurable standards. he has a family who loves him, presumably more than enough money to get by with a pretty cushy lifestyle, and does well, honestly better than well, in every single system he is presented with. but even so, he's still unhappy. there is something in his soul that has not yet been satisfied. he's bored of the world, bored of his place in it, how easy it all is. what the DN really offers him is a challenge, entertainmentā just the same as L, and just the same as ryuk.
near similarly suffers from this kind of boredom, though it is perhaps less overtly stated than in the case of light, L, and ryuk, and less easy to catch as it is not as realistic/common. again: near basically ends up the winner of wammy's house. he is the one to take the title of L, he's declared the smartest, bestest kid at wammy's, and he gets all the power and privilege that comes with such a title. but stillā he's so. fucking. bored. much to the embarrassment of mello, this shit was never really a challenge to him. it's pretty obvious that near isn't really even all that attached to the title of Lā don't forget that his first real introduction to the story involves him explicitly saying that he'd be just fine working with mello as essentially co-L successors. and this is a viewpoint that he holds onto until the very end of the series, actually, claiming that he was only able to best light due to mello's sacrifice. near doesn't really give a fuck about the rat race he's been slotted into, though it's perhaps for that exact reason that he ends up winning it anyway, and getting all the responsibility that comes along.
that being said, i think there are still two main differences between light and near:
light fucks up.
near never gets past his boredom.
in the case of this first point, i do not mean to say that near never ever makes any move/judgement that could be considered a mistakeā mello killing the entire SPK is the first thing that comes to mind, which i see as blood on near's hands for the same reason that L takes at least some responsibility for lind l. tailor. rather, i mean that near never makes a such a monumental fuck-up that he has to overturn his entire worldview just to account for it in the same way that light does when he accidentally kills two people w/ the DN the first time.
it's like, if you've ever known (or been) the kind of kid who always got perfect grades in school, straights A's for K-12, only to reach college and suddenly bomb their first test and have an existential crisis as their only real achievement in life is crushed into dust, then you know light yagami. only for light, it's on a whole 'nother scale, because not only does he fucking oopsie daisy kill two people, but he kills in such a context that he can mentally manipulate it back into seeming heroic. i hate to say that suffering causes character development because that's terrible advice (it's how you react to terrible circumstances that matters, imho) but to some degree, yeah, having conflicts/hard times in life is just necessary to figure shit out sometimes. near (and L, oh goddd i need to write about L properly sometime) has so many things smoothed over and handed to him, and on top of that, he's a super genius very rarely fucks anything up, at least according to base logic. he doesn't even really consider the morality of anything he's doing until light straight up asks him in a desperate bid to keep talking at the end, it's all just logic and factors to consider.
this all leads to my second point, which is that near never really gets the chance to overcome his boredom in the same way as the others. ryuk at least gets his entertainment for a couple years, and light and L (and mello) get so invested in each other and their game that it literally kills them, but near just kinda. keeps going. he keeps being L, he keeps solving cases, he does the duty he was given and enjoys his toys... and that's it. he lies around, the only one left to live, never even taking credit for the end of KIRA, never gets another haircut, and keeps the title going. what a life, for a kid who dragged a god back down to earth.
sidenote1: toys
am i reading too into things? maybe. near's toys hold a lot of significance throughout the story in more specific ways, most notably the finger puppets he uses at the very end of the story while tracking different people's/kira's actions, though you could probably read some kind of meaning into every toy he has and the ways in which he plays with them. what i want to look at here though is more the general reasoning behind playing with them in the first placeā a desire for a childhood he didn't get to have? a love of games more generally? (could track with him seeing the KIRA case, or really all detective work, as just another game.) you could also read into his toys as another source for near's apathy/detachment from reality, literally breaking every notable person around him down into a doll by the end of the story, speaking a lot to how alienated he is from the world (again, very similar to both L and light, there). i don't have much more of a point to make here, just wanted to add this in somewhere since it's one of his most striking visual character traits.
sidenote2: light's arc
going back to my point at the start of this post... light's character arc.
uhh. near winning is a good thing, actually. and i don't just mean that as a moral claimā DN itself as a story isn't really concerned with trying to answer any moral questions about good or evil or the justice system, so it makes sense & is fair to me that it doesn't try all that hard to answer anything along those lines by the very end of the story. what i mean to say here is that near winning is a good thing on the level of the character arc, specifically as an end to light's arc.
i made a post a while back while mid-manga reread talking through some of the reasons why L's death can feel kind of unsatisfying/paint the second half of the story in a less interesting light (hah) for a lot of viewers, with the main point i ended up on being that L wasn't really able to win because he never really had all that clear of a win state in the first place. i still kiiind of agree with this point, though i think there's a lot more i could add to that post... anyways. point is, i bring up that post because it touches on a similar thing to what i want to talk about here: light's character arc being a tragedy.
this is more speculation on my part, but i think another part of the reason why people get turned off to DN post-L death is not just the fact that L isn't really a playable character in the game anymore, but the fact that light's character arc takes such a dramatic twist after the timeskip. i talked about this a little bit in my little ramble on light & titles (which a lot of you liked, apparently!! ty for all the lovely comments on there, i love reading what you guys have to say ^w^), but light's character arc in DN is a tragedy to me, full-stop.
tragedies to me are cyclicalā revolutionary, if you will. since all stories necessitate some kind of something to take place, a tragedy to me is all about a character beginning in one point, then continually getting hit by Event, after Thing, after Event, only to end up in essentially the exact same place that they started. any character changes or development that seem to happen throughout the story are ultimately nullified by the endā the main subject does not truly grow, does not truly reflect on their actions or traumas, does not move on. two steps forward is two steps back. even ending up in a position worse than they started is sometimes better than a true tragedy, in my mind, as at least then there is some chance they may still reflect or change or grow in the future, leaving the hope that they may still overcome this new circumstance later on. a true tragedy ends in nothing meaningful ever getting the chance to truly change, at least in the case of the main subject of the story.
light's character arc in the first half of the story is an upward, underdog kind of story. yes, light has the power of a shinigami, of a supernatural force that the rest of the world doesn't even know existsā but part of the real appeal of his conflict with L is how powerful L feels in comparison, having the wealth and respect and title to command a world's worth of forces against him. fuck, even taking down naomi misora feels like an incredible hurdle overcome, a teenager managing to charm and yap and flutter his eyelashes out of a shitty situation he was only just lucky enough to stumble across in the first place, to stop someone who could've ruined his entire plan with a few words. killing L was always going to be light's greatest accomplishment when it comes to his rise to godhood, not only because of L's great power but the comparative position of light at the time that he did soā not yet an adult, not even really out of school, perhaps barely out of his parents' house.
in contrast, light's arc for the second half of the story is a downward spiral. we see all of the consequences light has been miraculously avoiding smack into him like meteors in this half, his ever-growing ego torn to shreds as he's yanked back down to earth. and in comparison to the anime, the manga really beats this point into you, dedicating the entire second half of the story to light's fall from grace as he loses his mind and loses his humanity. like, while i do kind of prefer the manga ending to the anime, i have to admit that light's death there is fucking brutal. light goes through pages, chapters, purely dedicated to near tearing him a new asshole, only end the story bloody and delirious and crawling on his knees begging a god of death to fix everythingā all just to die the exact same death as everyone else he's killed. i mean, look at these fucking pages (ch.107):

(that last fucking picture of him. clawing at the sky. it always fucking gets to me.)
it hurts to read this shit!! we spend the entire first half of the story watching this dude's rise to glory, the entire time stuck inside of his head, emotionally connecting with him even if we don't really mean to or disagree with his actions or question his morality. watching his fall back down, especially after all of that, is fucking painfulā an in no way does near make the process any easier. if anything, his blunt, snarky bitchery, saying all the quiet parts out loud, calling light out for being a terrible replacement L and pointing and laughing at his failures to his face, only shoves more salt in the wound, only proves just how human he has been all this time, how meaningless any of his supposed "rise to power" ever really was. light got his fifteen seconds of fame, sureā but near is armed and ready to make sure that's all he'd ever get, that the name Light Yagami would never even be associated with the position he held for so long. six years was all he gotā and it was all he was ever going to get, because light yagami did not do this for humanity, he did it for himself. all near did was collect the debt that L prescribed. he fulfilled his duty as toldā nothing more, and nothing less.
i just have to wonder... is this why people hate him? because he has no sympathy for the fall? maybe. i don't know.
either way, i don't think i could ever really hate him. it's a big responsibility, being the only one left behind. but near has always been the one to hold such weights on his shoulders.

so first off Loop and Isa are staying in a clocktower on the north coast of Vaugard. Loop has taken full control of the town they are staying in and refuses to leave for the most part. Loop isn't mean or cruel to the people of the town by any means they just took the town by force and have now made it their safe space. the towns people used to be scared if Loop but have since gotten used to them and some even like Loop. they spend most of their time in the clock tower decorating it, working on a project of theirs, and studying the stars at night. I might do a drawing of the layout of the clocktower. maybe. Loop wears the tattered remains of their old cloak and keeps their hair long. they have ditched the eyepatch entirely.
Isa at first stayed in Jouevente, he kept in contact with Bonnie and Nille, he and Mirabelle send letters but they don't talk that much and Odile hasn't been responding. he quit the defenders but still wants to help people leading to him getting into a lot of trouble with both authorities and criminals. he's having his vigilante arc. this ends with him getting seriously injured luckily Loop was around and saw him bleeding out and decided to drag him back to their town and heal him. (hence the bandages on his chest.) Isabeau is a lot more introverted in this AU. he's still loud and fun but he tires out quicker and has days we're he just isn't in the mood to be loud. he's more serious, more serious than Loop anyway, and is upset with how the Vaugardian government is handling the whole world ending situation. also he doesn't hide how smart he is, he realized there's no point when things are this bad.
Isabeau's and Loop's relationship is tense at first. Isabeau is reeling from how different and cold Loop is while also still having a fat crush (Loop being different didn't really change how much Isabeau likes him) and Loop thinks that Isabeau just wants Siffrin back and is very against that. this ofcourse does not stop Loop from jokingly flirting with Isabeau to get a reaction, Loop is just like that. Loop lashes out a lot and Isabeau is just trying to get them to open up. very angsty.
anyway some fun facts! Loop compares Isabeau to Venus a lot. they call Isa Morning star or Evening star has a cute nickname and painted the Venus symbol on his neck in the comic. Isabeau likes how direct and hard Loop is now, he thinks it's hot. gay ass. Loop sings a lot, they sing while they work, they sing when idle, they sing for the town. Isabeau had a cat, her name is Saumon. (French name for salmon) yes Isabeau named his cat salmon its funny. he had the cat before the king appeared and when he quit the defenders he gave the cat to one of his friends to take care of. now he has his cat back. she's super sassy and judgy.

This is probably going to be a very long post but the more I think about the rise (and subsequent fall) of the New Mandalorians, the more that I get wrapped up in not only the colonialism committed by Satine and the movement, how it began in such a horrifyingly understated way, but also how it paved the way for Mandalore to be destroyed thanks to the almost-complete erasure of their culture.
First of all, Canon verse deciding to remove the True Mandalorians (and placing the "Old" Mandalorians in a similar, though less prominent position) feels particularly underhanded and paints everything in a black and white manner. Satine: a sympathetic character who is the only one standing against Death Watch, the last shred of peace left for Mandalorians to cling to. Which. Last standing? Yes, definitely. But not the only one.
A war where Death Watch and the New Mandalorians were the major players, only to have Death Watch defeated ā even with the assistance of the Jedi keeping Satine alive ā makes little sense from a technical standpoint. Is it impossible? Probably not. All sorts of things can happen in history, pure dumb luck makes every difference, but it's unlikely. A party which seeks peace is not going to survive against another ultra violent, volatile party that's pissed off at you because you want to erase the culture that they so deeply value.
Which, yeah I don't buy it. Even with the Republic stepping in later on, it's fishy. But for the sake of my sanity, I'm mostly focusing on Legends, because the more you try to create a coherent timeline (seriously, how is Clone Batch Math easier than this?) for the Mandalorian Civil Wars, the harder it is not to give up entirely.
Anyways. Satine did not survive years of conflict due to mere smarts and perseverance, and did not end the war by being charismatic and having good people skills. She was the LEAST THREATENING PARTY in a three-party war, hunkering down with her Jedi protectors and playing politician while the actual warriors in the conflict weakened one another and ā for the True Mandalorians ā were wiped out.
True Mandalorians. Death Watch. New Mandalorians.
So, okay. The approximate dates of the beginning and end of the Mandalorian Civil Wars don't necessarily make sense with Satineās age. She'd have been slightly younger, and Canon seems to have a tendency to just wave their hand in the general direction of a time period and deflect onto another topic.
Which, you know what? Fine. I can work with that without having to think too hard about the dates. It kills me not to delve into it further, but. No. It's not like Disney's gonna pay me to fix their broken timeline.
(But if I had to, I'd shift Jaster's death to 47BBY instead of 52BBY, and push the Battle of Galidraan a year back to 43BBY, andā)
Here's what's important to remember, though:
- There are two Mandalorian Civil Wars. The first being True Mandalorians vs Death Watch. The second being the much shorter, and quickly solved Death Watch vs the New Mandalorians.
- The massacre of the True Mandalorians happened shortly before the beginning of the second civil war.
- The True Mandalorians had already been dealing with Death Watch for years, and they were winning. Death Watch wasn't just on the run, they were weak, they had to resort to TRICKING THE JEDI into killing the True Mandalorians for them.
Who wasn't weak? The New Mandalorians, the people that actively choose to turn their back on a culture that had survived for centuries. And yes, Death Watch remained even after the True Mandalorians fell. Tor Vizsla targeted Satine and the New Mandalorians viciously after that, there was even more destruction, but it wasn't with the severity with which he'd prosecuted the True Mandalorians.
Here's what happened next: Jango Fett escaped his enslavement. He hunted down Tor Vizsla, and he killed him. Whatever strength Death Watch had regained in those few years didn't matter, because the second their leader was gone they were certainly left unorganized and at a disadvantage.
Giving the New Mandalorians the opening they needed to cement in people's minds to their beliefs and convince the House and Clan leaders that abandoning their old ways was the solution. After all, how much more of Mandalore was left to destroy? How many more had to be lost?
With the public's approval and the Republicās help, Satine Kryze and the New Mandalorians scavenged the corpse of Mandalore, and they took what they deemed fit, left the rest to rot and ā given time ā be erased completely.
What's worse is that Satine's activism and speeches made it sound like that made sense (because, to Satine, it did make sense); abandon what Mandalore once was because that's the reason we've been destroyed, isn't it? (Not entirely untrue.) And these people, whose world had been ravaged, who's clans and families had wrecked everything with in-fighting, were tired and desperate enough that they listened.
Actually, here's what's really worse ā Satine got LUCKY! The first time! It should not have ended like that. But because she got lucky, because it worked once, she tried to do the exact same thing when the entire galaxy went to war. And she ignored the suffering of people whom she should have known empathy towards, who were going through the very same torment she experienced as a child. Because her position of superiority where peace is the only answer was so ingrained in her beliefs, because she was ARROGANT.
And because peace was the only answer, because she'd disavowed any sense of warrior culture from her people, Satine had as much a hand in dooming Mandalore as everyone who went in with the worst intentions. Does it matter that it was doomed regardless, because Maul was the great evil that came to destroy them? No. Maul was just the most convenient means to an end the resurrected Death Watch could find, but if not him it would have been anyone ā anything ā else.
I do feel for her. She had to experience her father's death so young and step into a role he'd left behind, didn't get a proper chance to grieve because she had to be strong for everyone else who was grieving. She gave up the possibility of love for duty. Satine was a good leader, I won't argue that, and she was the last stand between Mandalore and total annihilation, but she was also deeply flawed.
#narrator: and it was in fact a very long post#the star wars brainrot won't let me rest so im forcing people to percieve my takes#i love mandalore and it's complex history so much but i do not love all of the decisions taken by some people#i am not trying to hate on satine so don't come for me but looking at it from far away its just. really clear to me#the new mandalorians winning was dumb luck + the republic wanting a new puppet#star wars#true mandalorians#death watch#eza.txt#also looking too closely at these dates made me realize that my age hc for bo katan would make her 3 during the second civil war. oops#a thirteen year age difference between siblings isn't impossible though and it would also explain why bo was so strongly death watch#if you didn't personally experience it you wouldn't be able to see why you maybe shouldn't join the evil mando group!#satine kryze critical#sorry forgot people get angy too easily on this website lmao
