But like of each thing that in season grows
Summary: How a kind gesture can lead to something more. One shot.
Pairings: Loki x Female Reader
Warnings: Christmas fluff, mention of off screen assault, some swearing, lots of snow, books, poetry, smutty smut.
A/N: Okay, look. It just wanted to get out. You’re thrown in without a warning, nor a floatie. Apologies for the liberties taken to interpret and manipulate characters to dance after my will once more. Obviously don't read if you're a minor.
9~9~9~9~9~9~9~9~9~9~9~9~9~9~9~9
The greatest ideas were conceived in the shower. That was a scientific fact.
You liked facts. You did not like uncertainties or speculation. The feeling of being in limbo was something that didn’t sit right with you.
So as you were in the shower, working the conditioner in your hair, the idea was just there. It was simple, humble, but beautiful. Your hands slowed and stilled. And then your mind rebooted and went at lightning speed, planning things out. You needed to write things down.
You stepped out of the shower hurriedly, towelling down your body, before realising that your hair felt different. Cursing, you stepped back under the water to rinse off the conditioner.
*****
You hated staff meetings. Particularly third Thursdays staff meetings, because they dragged on and on. The weekly mission reports were presented and Fury insisted on inviting some guest speakers. He called it “Horizon Thursday”.
In your opinion it narrowed rather than widened it. Today’s guest speaker was Quinn Harris, cyber security specialist. You suspected self-proclaimed, but you hadn’t bothered doing a deep dive on him.
You were sat on the increasingly uncomfortable chair, rows of employees in front of you, the Avengers at the very front. Rogers had delivered his usual military style mission report, the other members of his team trying to look alive, though you suspected Romanoff and Banner were asleep, as they were both donning sunglasses.
“What you need is a quantum computer and it’ll solve all your problems with encryption.”
“They might as well propose using block ciphers,” you murmured under your breath, turning the page in your book.
Meanwhile, a hand shot in the air at the front. “Excuse me, Mr Harris.”
The man smiled. “Mr Stark, do you have a question?”
“Well, not so much a question for you, but I would very much like the opinion of another expert on what you just said. You know, before anyone here thinks about investing in your product, which, let’s be honest, would be me. I’d like to be sure it’s the right thing.”
Fury rolled his eyes and sunk back in his chair.
There had been talk about getting that dude in? You must have zoned out for that part.
Harris’ face fell for a second, but he honed his features and forced a smile. “Of course.”
“It just so happens that we have an inhouse expert,” Tony got up and scanned the crowd. “Isn’t that right, Y/N?”
Everyone uniformly turned to look at you. Everyone.
You felt the moment one particular pair of eyes set on you. The amount of times you had spoken to one another had been limited to the missions you were needed on, for hacking. You’d had his voice in your ear a few times and it did things to your body that made you feel like a system overheat. You never really saw him during missions though as your job was very much office-bound.
Today, he wore the damn leather suit. Whilst Fury didn’t give a fuck, Rogers very much was all about the professional appearance of the Avengers. What you didn’t understand was why everything looked better on him. The black and green possibly was the best colour combination there ever was. The other day Bucky had worn a Slytherin pullover and even though it very nicely accentuated his physique, it looked nothing like the colours did on Loki.
You swallowed hard when you felt his eyes on you. They seemed to see right through you, even over the distance of the seven rows of chairs.
And then you felt the weight of all the other pairs of eyes on you. That was a lot of people. You gulped and pushed your glasses back up the bridge of your nose - a habit you couldn’t break.
“Y/N,” Tony called, bringing you back to the matter at hand. “Stand up and look at me.” His voice was gentle. “Start breathing again. Good. Now tell me what Harris is not telling me about the quantum computer.”
You adjusted your glasses again and cleared your throat. “It’s a solid proposition, I suppose,” you started, “however, one I would expect from a college freshman, certainly not from a cyber security expert specialist.”
Murmurs erupted, but you ignored them and rattled off your thoughts.
“Can a quantum computer crack asymmetric encryption algorithms? Yes. And yes, we all know that thanks to Shor’s algo the maths problems are only polynomial. Also, we know this applies to discrete log problems, too, therefore, all we’d need is a large enough quantum computer. Of course, he,” you gestured to Harris, “would have to build one first, which as you can guess is very costly. However, this entire presentation is based on the assumption that quantum computing is the end of asymmetric cryptography. And that is such a blatantly ignorant approach, with complete disregard for the safety of the members of our staff that are entirely reliant on the encryption cracking working on all their devices during operations and missions. And this whole quantum computer only works if you have a network connection.”
“So you’re suggesting there are hard problems that a quantum computer can’t solve?” Harris said, chin jutting out, arms crossed defiantly.
“Don’t be silly, of course there are,” you huffed. “I coded new post-quantum asymmetric encryption algos three years ago and tested them on several sites I am not authorised to disclose that have quantum computers. Not one of them cracked the simplest of those codes, in any of the over 5,400 attempts they ran over the past three years. So this presentation is… rather embarrassing in its sloppiness.”
“Well,” Harris’ lips were a thin line now. “I’m sure you have a ‘much better’ suggestion then?” He actually raised his hands to add the quotation marks.
“Actually, I do. I developed our own version of a quantum computer, at - and I’m only guessing here - a fraction of the price you’d charge Mr Stark, which can crack both symmetric and asymmetric encryption, works on all of our staff’s devices, portable and stationary, works offline and is about the size of, uh, a thumbnail.”
You pointed to your thumb, because in your humble experience men like him struggled to accurately size things.
Tony smiled and turned to Harris.
“Okay that concludes today’s meeting.” Fury got to his feet and patted Harris’ shoulder. “Looks like we’re good, but thanks for coming.”
People around you stood, some nodding at you as they passed. Tony caught up with you in the hallway. Before he could say something you blurted out: “Did I say something wrong? Was I rude again?”
He smirked and pushed the button of the lift. “He needed putting into place. Totally fine by me. You did great.”
“Stark!” bellowed Fury from down the hall and Tony winced.
“Excuse me, mother’s calling.” He turned and left.
You sidled into the lift with several other people. The cabin stopped a few floors up and people got off. That was when you noticed Loki on the other side of the lift. Up you went and after another stop you were alone with the Asgardian god. The cabin seemed to shrink.
You both watched the numbers climb, the lift hummed, Loki’s leather suit creaked softly as he crossed his hands behind his back.
“Could you please enlighten me about Shor’s algorithm?” he suddenly asked, looking at you.
You had a heart palpitation. Surely that was what it was. He was so impossibly tall and sculpted and… here.
“Um,” you pushed your glasses back up, “it’s a quantum algorithm for finding the prime factors of an integer.”
Loki’s face looked blank.
“It, er, essentially it finds the prime factors of large numbers a lot faster than conventional computers do. Which we use in encryption. The large numbers, that is. So it cracks codes faster.”
“Ah,” he said, head turning back to continue staring at the number display. “Thank you.”
“You’re welcome,” you croaked out.
The urge to facepalm burned under your fingers, but you resisted. As soon as the doors slid open on your floor, however, you fled and sought asylum in the ladies’ toilets, banging your head against the wall of the stall.
*****
Operation Great Idea was in full swing.
So you’ve had a little personal setback, but that didn’t deter you from the objective. You had compiled a list, one you were confident was accurate based on your intel and research. That very list was neatly folded in the deep pocket of your coat as you walked through the cold rain on this late November afternoon.
Yes, you did something you’d never done before - take an afternoon off - and were trying to evade puddles on your way to the bookshop. Could you have ordered the books online? Most of them, certainly. But your late mother, an independent business owner, had ingrained in you to support local shops. You liked bookshops, they reminded you of her and of simpler times.
Your timing was excellent - of course you had researched when the shop was least busy - and you practically had the shop to yourself. And so you walked, dragging a pull-along basket behind you as you searched the shelves for the books on the list.
Sometimes, there were different editions there and you stood for a while, feeling the weight of each book in your hand, the feel of the embossed letters on the spine, the scent of the pages. You wanted it to be just right, so you took your time.
Some of the books you would only be able to get in a little second hand bookshop, tucked away in a side street. You had called beforehand and the owner lifted a box from under the counter to show you what she had reserved for you. As soon as your fingers made contact with the books you felt absolutely giddy.
Back at the Tower, you spent two entire evenings wrapping books after work. When you were finished, you leaned back, looking at the neatly organised stack. Yes, you were ready. Now all you needed was an exorbitant amount of luck for the next 24 days.
*****
You watched Loki stare suspiciously at the first parcel. He was sitting in the communal kitchen, Thor next to him.
“Why would it be hexed?” Thor asked. “Simply because the sender is missing?”
Loki just gave him a pointed look.
“Come, brother, aren’t you curious to find out what is in this gift?”
“Loki got a present?” Steve asked as he pulled a bowl out of a cupboard. “Did I miss his birthday?”
Before Loki could say anything, Thor shook his head. “He’s worried it has been tampered with.”
Roger’s brows furrowed. “How did it get into your possession?”
“It was on the floor outside my door this morning,” Loki complied, sighing.
“FRIDAY would have picked up on any foreign substances or intruders in the tower,” Tony said between gulps of coffee. “He now can detect traces of magic, too. ‘Course, he went apeshit over your magic, but we got it under control, eventually.”
“That’s what all this ‘Alert, alert, magic detected, caution advised’ blaring at five in the morning was?” Scott bustled in.
A slight tinge of red shaded Loki’s complexion. “I have to practise some time.”
“Thought you were born with it?” Scott interjected, helpfully.
This earned him a glare. “I was born with the aptitude for magic and sorcery. It takes a lot more than mere talent to achieve this level of proficiency.”
“Several centuries, in fact,” his brother supplied. “Now then Stark here says it’s safe. So open it, brother!” Thor clapped his hands together.
Loki indignantly and very reluctantly slid the parcel towards him and pulled on the simple string that held the wrapping together. The paper fell open to reveal one of the books you had picked.
From your vantage point of, well, your computer screen, you zoomed in to get a better look at him.
“Oh, a book,” you heard the onlookers muttering disappointedly, quickly losing interest and going about their business once more.
But Loki just sat, staring at the book. It took him a good few minutes to pick it up. And he did what you had seen him do many times before. He weighed it in his hands, fingertips running over the cover, the spine. Then he opened the lid. To anyone else it might not have been noticeable, but to you it was: he inhaled the scent of the book. And finally, there was the smallest upturn of his lips.
You exhaled, relieved. One down 23 more to go.
*****
Over the next week you were too busy testing the new firewall you had developed to check on Loki’s reaction. Sometimes you felt a little self-conscious, scared even that he might not like the books or think this was from a stalker. Which technically you had indulged in, stalking that was, but only to find the perfect books for him. And then sometimes you would get worried that someone else might have found the presents.
But you knew he had received every single one of them, for every evening, when you passed the common area you saw him sitting on the couch with the latest offering in his hands. Perhaps it was wishful thinking, but it looked as if his tense shoulders had started to relax a bit.
Another couple of days went by and as the decorations started to pop up in the Tower and the first snow fell that didn’t immediately melt or turn to mush you felt happy. Perhaps it also had something to do with the fact that a certain someone walked differently. Maybe it was your imagination. But he seemed even taller these days.
*****
“Did it work?” you heard his voice in your ear a couple days later.
The data set was streaming on the screen in front of your eyes. “It did. Give me a moment to inject the virus, then you can disconnect the USB cable.”
“Can I still talk to you?”
Your fingers on the keyboard stilled for a moment, surprised. “Of course. The program runs through your phone, not through comms.”
There was a little pause, before he said: “I have a question. About a Midgardian tradition.”
You wrinkled your nose, scanning the code rushing over the screen. “I’ll try my best, but I’m rubbish at traditions.”
The audible outbreath sent shivers down your spine. “I’m sure that’s not true.”
“What’s your question then?”
“Tell me about the Yuletide calendar.”
45% done. “You mean the Advent calendar?”
“Precisely.”
This was dangerous territory you were treading on. “Oh, it’s a fun thing for kids, really. To make the wait for Christmas a bit more exciting and I guess more bearable. It’s nice to get a little something like a toy.”
“Is it always toys?”
69% now. “Well, no. My mum used to get me an advent calendar that had these lovely drawings behind each door. I hung it up in the front room and we’d open it together every morning.”
“I suppose it’s a nice custom,” he said, before asking, “What about grown ups, do they have advent calendars?”
83%. “Sometimes. There’s all sorts: beer, wine, beauty products, chocolates - you name it, it probably exists somewhere.”
“Books, too?”
The question threw you, did he know it was you? A light was blinking on your screen.
100%.
“That’s it, Loki, the virus is uploaded, you can unplug the cable now and get out of there.”
“Thank you, Y/N.”
You heard a crackle and the comms was handed over to operations again. As you finished running the decryption programme on the data Loki had extracted, you kept hearing his voice in your head.
“Books, too?” Were you busted?
*****
Security breaches were both an insult as well as an admittedly welcome challenge to you. Someone had tried to flex their fingers - and you had a very good idea who - to break into Stark’s network. They had managed to pierce a little hole into the outer layer of the firewall, but they didn’t know that you had several back up plans in place and you enjoyed watching them work. However, as you scanned over the intruder’s code you devised a new security strategy.
You were in the middle of coding a nice little primer for a new layer - unexpected because of its simplicity, but a tough little nut to crack - when someone cleared their throat next to you. You looked up to find Loki, his eyes fixed on you. You blinked, looked around, but no one else was there, and back up at the god.
“Can I, uh, help you?” Smooth. You facepalmed internally.
“I realised I have never been in here,” he said, looking around the room, then back at your desk. “You have a lot of monitors.”
You waved your hand dismissively. “Just the standard three.”
“What are you doing now? Or is it a secret?”
“It’s not a secret at all. So we’re currently under attack. Relax,” she said when she noticed him tense, “cyberattack. Someone’s knocking at our backdoor, trying to see if they can get in.”
You motioned to one of your screens. “This is the intruder’s code. He’s trying out lots of keys to see if he can get in. And this,” you pointed to the screen next to it, “is our defence mechanism.”
“Extraordinary.” Loki’s low voice murmured. He was close. You turned your head and nearly had a heart attack at just how close. His sharp profile was illuminated by the blue glow of the monitor, his hair falling to his shoulders, one hand splayed on the desk, the other resting on the back of your chair. He looked beautiful. Perfect. He was leaning closer to the screen so he could see what was going on. Your breath hitched.
And then he turned his head.
Something that sounded an awful lot like a squeak escaped your throat.
Loki lifted an eyebrow. “Am I making you nervous, Agent Y/N?”
You pushed your glasses up your nose and leaned back, just an inch. “No?”
Loki’s eyes drifted over your face, before they met your gaze again. “Is that a question or a statement?”
“A… a statement,” you mumbled and, for good measure, added, “sir.”
His eyes darkened, a smirk curling the left side of his lips. “Are you scared of me?”
You tilted your head ever so slightly. “How can I be scared of you?”
“You’ve heard the stories, undoubtedly.”
“I did. And if I believed everything people told me and not looked beyond I would be incredibly shitty at my job.”
He smiled at that. It was small, but there, and it made him so attractive you felt your stupid heart starting to pound in your chest. Could he hear it?
“Do you like to read, Agent Y/N?”
Another adjustment of your glasses. “I do.”
“What would you say is your favourite book?” His voice was low and smooth.
His hand moved from your desk to the side of your face, where he gently pulled on a tendril, before he brushed it behind your ear. The back of his fingers skimmed your cheek for less than a second, but it sent you reeling. It was as if an electromagnetic pulse was slowly wiping clean your hard drive. You couldn’t think.
“Um, err, Jane.. Jane Eyre.”
He hummed. “I wonder why? Is it because she’s abandoned and rejected all her life?”
You shook your head slowly. “No. Because she’s forced to leave home, into a life she didn’t choose. But when she is given the freedom and space to grow she learns to be the master of her happiness.”
His eyes followed the curve of your neck and back up again. It almost felt as if he was touching you. “Interesting.”
You swallowed again, before he stood upright, nodded at you, turned and left.
Your heart was pounding. And then your computer beeped and your attention was back on the screen.
“Oh pants…” Your fingers started flying over the keyboard. “Not today, Harris. Or any other day.”
Nine more books to go.
*****
He was onto you. Of course he was. After all, he was the God of Mischief and Lies. If anyone would find out who was behind this, it would be him. Personally, the preferred outcome was that he never would find out.
You had asked yourself often over the last 18 days why exactly you wanted to do this for him. But that was just it. You really had no other motive than wanting to do this for him. Maybe because you sympathised with him, being stuck somewhere far from home, feeling lonely and not really integrated. Maybe you had projected your own feelings onto him a tiny little bit. Possibly considerably. However, it was done with the best of intentions. You wanted to make this nice for him. The run up to Christmas. A little bit magical. He must like magic, he was a sorcerer after all, wasn’t he?
So what if you had started dreaming of him at night. He would lean over you as you sat at your desk, in all his tall- and broadness. This time his hands would be touching you. And he’d lean in to whisper into your ear. Admittedly, not words you would necessarily associate with such a situation.
When you would wake up you knew where to place the things he said to you in your dreams. He’d said them to you during missions. And yes, “how much longer till the download is complete, Agent Y/N?” was not remotely as sexy as “I’m going to ravish you now, thoroughly” would have been, for example. But your brain only had so much to work with and it worked for you.
You noticed a few things, however. Loki was around more often, probably just a silly coincidence, or you had started to pay more attention. He looked at you now. You’d look up and find him already looking at you, sometimes a little smile crossed his lips, but mostly it was just something with his eyes, they seemed… warmer, maybe?
However, to your horror you discovered that you had started to blush. Every single time this happened. So you spent a lot of time in the ladies’ toilets, splashing your face with cold water, only to see it even more flushed than before. Apparently, all the books you had read lied about that ‘splashing your face with cold water to calm down and not make people notice’-thing.
But it all boiled down to the fact that he was onto you. Maybe he was humouring you and seeing where this was going. Maybe he had found out already and you made him feel awkward. Or he was waiting for the opportune moment to expose and humiliate you. You weren’t sure which.
Right now it didn’t matter. You were so tired you could hardly see properly anymore. So when you decided to crash on the sofa in the common room, because it was halfway to your room, you didn’t think to check if anyone was there.
That was mistake number one.
You collapsed onto the sofa with a groan, eyes closed, head leaning against the back of the sofa.
“Fuck. My. Fucking. Life,” you complained to the universe. “Can you please make the appendage of that misogynistic wanker fall off already? For fuck’s sake!”
Mistake number two.
Someone chuckled. It came from rather close to you.
Dread filled you. Foul language was not tolerated in the workplace. To be fair you could argue that the common room was not your workplace per se, however, you did not want to start arguing with HR because they were absolute savages in the art of word twisting. Or just savages full stop.
Carefully, you cracked your eyes open. And there, on the sofa right next to you, sat Loki. One leg was stretched out in all its glorious length, the other bent at the knee, his forearm resting over it, the book in his lap now closed, one of his slender fingers acting as bookmark. For a moment you wondered what it would feel like to be the book.
“I hope it’s not my appendage you’re asking to be removed,” he said with a smirk.
You grappled to sit up, horrified. “Of course not! That would be awful… I mean, a terrible thing to wish for… you’d… err… such a loss of such a beautiful… I mean, I can only guess… but… um, err… heavens, please make me stop talking…”
You hid your head in a throw pillow, wishing the floor would open up and swallow you whole.
Mistake number three.
The sound of a low, rumbly laugh made its way to your ears. It entered your system like a virus, leaving your limbs feeling weak and yearning. Was Loki laughing? You lifted your head and watched him, highly bemused at your idiotic display.
It was the most beautiful thing you’d ever heard. You felt a hard tug at your heart. Goodness, if this man wasn’t already a god, you’d have to declare him one. If he were the head of a religion you would throw out your atheist views and follow him to the end of the multiverse. He looked absolutely breathtaking. Then again, when did he not?
“I’m so sorry,” you started to apologise, “I don’t know what-”
With superhuman speed he moved and sat next to you, his finger on your lips. The feel of his digit on your mouth felt more intimate than any sexual intercourse you’d ever had.
And then he leaned in.
He was so close your cells were basically breathing him in. His eyes were locked onto yours and nothing would have been able to make you look away right then.
“Do you want to know what book I’m reading right now?” His quiet words did things to your insides that were not legal.
You just about managed to nod, his finger still in place.
“‘The Remains of the Day’ by Kazuo Ishiguro. Do you know it?” He waited for your affirmation. “It’s about a man who is in love with a woman. But he doesn’t tell her. When they meet again after decades, she tells him her life would have been different if she had married him. And you know what he does? He still won’t admit his feelings to her. He walks away from her. The first time he lets her go, the second time he walks away.”
You remembered the book very well. You had picked it out for him, after all.
“It’s a cruel story, Y/N. A love that is never acknowledged, nor consumed.” Loki’s eyes drifted from yours down to your mouth. His finger slowly traced the outline of your lips. It was too much, your eyes closed.
“Do you think love is this cruel?” Loki asked quietly. You felt his words as he spoke them almost onto your skin. So close.
“It-it can be,” you whispered. “But maybe, maybe that wasn’t the point of the story.”
“No?”
You opened your eyes to find him looking at you. He’d moved away a bit, giving you some space, waiting for you to elaborate.
“Maybe the point was to show that he chose his job over love. Twice. You can call it dignity or pride, but at the end he’s alone. Without love.”
“What about you, Y/N? Do you have love in your life?”
You weren’t able to look into his eyes. Slowly, you got off the sofa. You turned back to him to respond to find he’d stood up, too.
You looked down at your shoes. His shoes were black, of course, polished, perfect, like him. Yours were several seasons old. Worn. A bit of the shoe sole had started to peel off at the top of your toes. The bit you always kicked into the floor when you worked.
Your eyes wandered up his trousers, black, to the belt, his pullover, also black. He looked effortlessly elegant, poised. You, on the other hand, looked a mess, even in your work attire. Your heart grew heavy at the realisation. Your dreams were stupid. Turned out your heart was even more stupid. And suddenly you felt incredibly small in more ways than one next to the tall, powerful god.
Swallowing a lump in your throat, you said: “I have known love, once. A long time ago.”
With that you pivoted on your heels and left, leaving Loki alone in the common room.
*****
Harris was an absolute tosser.
He just couldn’t leave things be. He insisted on trying to show you up, so he tried and tried to hack his way through your firewalls. Of course he had tried to hide his identity and it had made you chuckle, because you seriously had no idea how he could ever dare call himself a cyber security specialist if he covered up his tracks like a novice hacker.
In a way it was cute, but it was getting to the point of obsessive stalking and you frankly were rather tired of this little game by now. Particularly, since it kept you from your nice, warm, comfortable bed well past midnight.
However, Harris seemed to have changed tactics and started to badmouth you in the industry. Even Fury had called Tony and asked whether he should be worried, because Harris had dug up some hacking you’d done when you were much younger and much less ethical. Really it was unhinged, but everyone worked through teenage years in their own way.
You only knew this because you happened to be in Tony’s office and he had Fury on loudspeaker. Tony had pacified Fury without batting an eye, then hung up and asked if you’d be okay with him paying Harris a little visit, preferably as Iron Man. You had both laughed it off. But it bugged you.
So when you were on your way back to the tower from the compulsory (for all employees) counselling session and someone grabbed you, you weren’t surprised to come face to face with Harris. He didn’t lay a finger on you. No, he got two goons to do that for him.
Later, as you stumbled out of the lift and along the corridor, trying to make your way to your room, someone blocked your way.
“Speak of the devil! Y/N! We were just talking about you.” Tony. Other voices around him.
You kept your head down, thinking of how to get out of this unnoticed.
“We were just wondering if– Y/N? What happened?” You saw Tony’s hand reach out for you, but you flinched away.
Silence fell for a long moment.
Then a movement. Shoes appeared in your line of vision. You knew those shoes well. They had been on display on the couch for the past 22 days, attached to an Asgardian god.
He slowly held out his hand, palm up. An assurance, no harm. You gave the slightest nod. He moved the hand up and placed a finger under your chin so carefully you wanted to sob. The faintest of pressure had you lift your head to look up at Loki. His eyes scanned your appearance, stopping at your bruised hands that were trying to hold together your coat, taking in the blood splatters on the fabric, your busted lip, the lopsided glasses, the badly bent temple dangling off its hinge.
You never understood the expression ‘his features darkened’. You did now. Loki’s face transformed and you saw for the first time what a dangerous man he could be. Power radiated off him. You were glad it was not directed at you. His nostrils flared and you almost heard how much he was clenching his teeth.
“Names,” he ground out.
A hot tear rolled down your cheek and now that it started it didn’t want to stop. His eyes softened, something akin to vulnerability flitting across his features.
“H–Har…”
“Harris?” Tony asked softly. You nodded, still looking at Loki.
Loki rolled his lips in his mouth, his thumb swiping ever so lightly over the skin of your chin, before dropping his hand and walking to the lift in long strides.
“Nat?” Tony asked, the spy already by your side.
“Hold up, Reindeer Games!” Tony hollered behind you, as Romanoff led you down the corridor to your room. “I’m coming, too…”
It felt as if you were having an out of body experience as you were peeled out of your bloodied coat, your clothes and body assessed quickly but gently. She pulled out her phone after she ushered you into the shower.
“Tony? No forced intercourse, but lots of bruising…,” was all you heard before the hot spray of the water ran into your ears, blocking all noise out.
*****
Your glasses were fixed and you could see properly again. That was important, otherwise you wouldn’t have been able to see Harris’ face on the news as he was escorted - handcuffed - from a courtroom and shoved into a police van, followed by the two goons who had helped him.
When you turned from the screen above the cashier, you saw Loki next to Tony across the canteen, looking at you. You walked over, clutching your sandwich.
“So, um… thank you,” you said, gesturing to the screen, “for that.”
Tony put a hand on your shoulder, squeezing gently, before his eyes gazed behind you. “Is that a double cheeseburger I see? Excuse me.”
And off he went, leaving you alone with the Asgardian god.
You shuffled your feet, studying the floor.
“Thanks again-”
“Are you okay?”
You both said at the same time. You laughed quietly, looking up at him. He smiled. You’d never seen Loki smile.
“I’m fine, thank you,” you said.
“I’m glad to hear it.”
You wanted to say so much more, do so much more, like hug him. But he was a god. You weren’t exactly sure what the protocol was for hugging gods. The awkward silence thickened.
“So, I’ll see you around?”
He was still smiling. “Yes. See you around.”
You were fairly sure you were blushing as you scampered off, back to your office.
*****
Bryant Park was one of your favourite places to be in New York. For one, it was right behind the public library - your heaven. For another, it was close to the Tower and you could wander the paths under the lovely trees. The park was very busy as it was Christmas Eve and people wanted to while away the time in the Winter Village until the big day. But as the ice rink closed down and the skaters came off, noses and cheeks red from the cold, the park started to empty.
You sat on a bench under one of the trees, gloved hands deep in your coat pockets, a woolly hat and scarf keeping you warm. Your head was tilted back and you watched the snowflakes dance and twirl in the cold wind.
“Y/N,” someone called.
Loki stood a few metres away from you, a black coat making him look even taller. He was not donning a hat or a scarf, he looked comfortable with the cold. The snow clung to his dark hair, a soft dusting was on his shoulders. You envied the snowflakes.
You got to your feet and he took a few steps closer, looking down at you.
“Were you enjoying the activities?” Loki asked, nodding to the ice rink.
“No, I just… I just like to sit here,” you said, feeling a bit silly. “I like the trees and the snow. It’s… peaceful.”
He nodded.
“How about you? Fancied a turn on the ice?”
He laughed and you watched the cloud mix with your breath. Now you envied your breath.
“Actually, I was looking for you.”
“Me?”
He took another step towards you. “Yes.”
“Why? Did something happen at the Tower?” Worriedly, you fumbled your phone out of the coat pocket and checked it.
A large hand covered it. You looked up. “Nothing happened. I wanted to talk to you.”
Nervously, you glanced down at his hand that still covered your phone. If you hadn’t been wearing gloves your hands would have had actual skin on skin contact. He dropped his hand to his side.
“Am I in trouble?”
He shook his head. “I… I wanted to thank you.”
“What for?”
His hand pulled a book out of his pocket. “For this.” He slid it back in the folds of his coat.
“Oh.” You didn’t really know how to feel or react. You knew he’d been onto you, so it was no surprise he’d sussed it out. He was, after all, the God of Mischief and Lies. But you had to give him kudos for letting it play out.
“Um, you’re welcome.” You bit your lip.
“You don’t know what this meant– what this means to me.”
It was impossible to look at him.
“I was dreading this time of year here on Midgard. But your incredibly generous advent calendar made it feel… like when I first visited here with my mother.” He grasped your gloved hands in his. “I miss her dearly, so thank you. For giving me this.”
You were too choked up to say anything, so you just nodded.
“Can I enquire what your reason was?”
It was so cautious, as if he was worried it might scare you off. And yet, the question threw you, most likely because you had been asking yourself the very same thing from the moment of its conception in your shower. It was just there, a need, an urgency you didn’t know where it came from or why it existed. It was something you had to do. Like breathing.
But over the course of the last few weeks, particularly the last few days, it had become painfully clear why you did it.
“I wanted, no, I needed you to be happy.”
He squeezed your hands gently. The tips of his shoes, his shiny, polished shoes, now touched yours.
“Please look at me.”
So you did. He looked different… vulnerable maybe.
“Why do you need me to be happy?” The question was another cloud and you breathed it in, let it fill your lungs.
“Because…” You were afraid to say it, to admit it. But something in his eyes made you courageous. Either that, or foolish.
“Because I watched you, during missions and in briefings and ops planning. You started to believe what they said about you. And it’s not true. There’s so much you don’t share, don’t tell them and I see it. It’s right there in your eyes. And I didn’t want you to lose yourself. And it’s selfish, I know, but I need you to be happy… because if you are, so am I.”
“If you think that’s selfish, then I am guilty of this notion, too.”
Loki raised his right hand to run the backs of his fingers over your cold cheek. “I knew after three days it was you. I wanted to see where this was going, what your motivation was. And I… when I saw you after Harris… I was filled with so much rage and fear. That I would lose you. Before I had you.”
He leaned his forehead against yours, you closed your eyes, heart beating out of your chest at what you were hearing. Was this a dream?
Loki’s voice was just above a whisper. “Can I? Have you?”
You moved away slightly to look into his eyes. “Yes.”
He leaned in, his hands splaying on your back, as you stood on your toes. The moment his lips touched yours, you felt a current run straight to your heart. It was as if your brain rewired, the missing piece of the primer clicked into place and unlocked everything.
Snow was falling as Loki kissed you under the tree. You didn’t hear the whistles and hollering of passerbys. You didn’t feel the cold wind. You felt elated, buzzing even.
“Your phone is buzzing,” Loki murmured against your lips.
“Hm?” you said dreamily.
“Your phone is buzzing,” Loki smiled, “someone’s calling you.”
Quickly you pulled out the damned device. Before you could even say your name, you heard Tony say: “So sorry for disrupting, Y/N, but we got a slight issue here that needs your expert skills pronto.”
You hung up, burying your head in Loki’s chest. His laugh rumbled in his chest. “We’ll talk more later.”
Breathing in his scent and holding onto him, you weren’t ready to let go. “Promise?”
*****
“Oh god, yes,” you sighed in absolute bliss. “That’s the spot, right there.”
Your groan sounded through the kitchen. You deserved that after three hours of extra work on Christmas Eve.
“Here?” Nat asked.
“Yes, yes! Please don’t stop,” you begged, putty in her hands, eliciting more noises from you.
“Maybe you should try yoga. Your shoulders and your whole upper body are so tense and full of knots. There’s a class I go to tomorrow at lunchtime, if you want to join me?”
“No time,” you murmured. “Heavens, Nat, what else can you do with those hands?”
“Wouldn’t you like to know?” she teased.
“Okay, that’s enough,” Banner interrupted, grabbing Nat by the hand and dragging her to the door. “I’m happy to share my girlfriend’s masseuse skills for a severe case of muscle lock, but I’m afraid I have a personal request now.”
You opened your eyes to catch Nat winking at you, a slight blush on her cheeks as she was pulled out of the room. “So I’m your girlfriend now?” you heard before they disappeared down the corridor.
You laughed and turned in your stool. Thor, Scott and Loki stood staring. Thor at the ends of his braids, Scott at his fingernails, Loki at you. Eyes intense and dark. You swallowed.
“Y/N, a word, if you please,” Loki said, before wrapping his fingers around your wrist and marching out of the room, with you trying to keep up with his long strides, your coat and shoulder bag in your other hand.
He didn’t say a single word until you reached his room - it was closest - and the door shut behind you, locking the outside world out. He pushed you against the door, arm placed against the wood above your head, body leaning into yours, not quite touching.
“That was… a rather interesting display,” he remarked quietly, his breath puffing against your face as he spoke. “In future, I would prefer if your keening was reserved for me.”
Your hands found the buttons of his shirt. “That sounds like an exclusive right to me.”
“It most certainly is.” His lips hovered over yours.
Your index finger slipped in the space between two buttons. “A right that needs to be earned,” you whispered, your finger grazing his skin.
His breath hitched ever so slightly. “Do not challenge me, darling,” he leaned in, his body moving against yours teasingly. “It might be,” his mouth brushed against your earlobe, “too taxing for you.”
You scoffed, but his lips silenced you. His stance shifted as he picked you up and placed you on the nearest surface - a sideboard - and stepped between your legs. He broke the kiss, to cup your face. For a long moment he just gazed at you. The heat in his eyes seemed to intensify, turning you into a needy mess. He made a show of taking off your glasses, folding the temples and carefully putting them on the side board next to you. Your core clenched.
He held out his hand for you to hop off the furniture. You took it and he took to your lips.
It was quite possible that several things fell off on your way to Loki’s bedroom. When you pushed him into the wall to open the damned buttons of his shirt, a picture might have fallen. A vase, perhaps, when he picked you up and spun you around so your back was against the doorframe next to the fragile ornament. Your head hit the heavy frame of a painting, rendering it lopsided, when Loki feasted on your throat, and you tilted your head back to allow him better access.
Kissing, licking, nipping, sucking - he was intent on leaving marks. Your fingers somehow were in his hair, keeping his head in place. Soft, his hair was so soft. A sharp contrast to the teeth you felt pulling on your skin. His ministrations drew a long moan from you.
Loki smiled against your skin. “Yes, my siren, sing.”
Your back hit the mattress and he crawled over you. His hair a curtain, screening you off from the rest of the world in your own sacred space. His shirt hung open, your hands reached out, tracing each line, each dip. His tongue against yours mimicked the motion of his hips that rolled into you. Your legs wrapped around his waist, meeting each movement, as if you had practised this dance many times before. He pulled away to tug off your pullover. His fingers pushed up your bra and then he sucked your nipple into his hot mouth, making you arch your back.
“Loki, please.”
You didn’t really know what you begged for. More, probably. More of this, more of him.
He pulled you up so you both were kneeling on the bed. Shaking hands fumbled with clothes and fastenings and then you were both naked. Your breath hitched at his beauty.
“Can I…,” you started, voice sounding hoarse. You looked up at him. “Please let me worship you.”
Something flickered across his face - surprise? He gave a curt nod and then watched every single one of your movements.
You took his right hand, tracing each finger with yours, the veins on the back of his hands. You brought his hand up to your face, cradling it to your cheek, before kissing the palm of his hand. One finger at a time, you sucked it into your mouth, to the knuckle, your tongue swirling around the digit, before releasing it and pressing a kiss to the tip, before moving on to the next.
Your hands traced the skin of the inside of his arm, his veins, the rise and fall of his muscles, and up over his shoulder, across his chest to his left arm, which you gave the same treatment. Each birthmark, each scar was kissed. Your hands skimmed over his chest, your lips followed the path. Loki’s breath stuttered when you sucked on his left nipple, before you released it, softly blowing on it. It puckered. You bestowed the same treatment upon the other nipple.
“Please, lie down,” you whispered and he complied.
You lay next to him, kissing his forehead, your fingers running through his hair along his scalp, gently tugging. Onwards, to kiss the curve of each eyebrow, the bridge of his nose, his cheekbones, his chin, along his jawline to his ear. You felt his body shiver when you breathed: “You are so beautiful, inside and out.”
Then your teeth closed around his earlobe, gently pulling. A deep moan sounded through the room. Up until now he had let you do whatever you wanted to and not touched you. But his restraint waned and his hands splayed on your back, pulling you flush against his body. You kept going, your lips now worshipping his delectable throat. He tilted his head back to give you better access.
“Herregud,” he rasped as you kissed, licked and sucked on his sensitive skin. His Adam’s apple bobbed up and down as he swallowed hard, his hands growing slack on your back.
You kissed the dip between his collar bones and worked your way down his torso, lips kissing, hands caressing. Further and further you went, along his abs, dipping in his belly button, following the trail of hair below. You leaned back a bit, to look at him. He was fully erect, heavy, swaying slightly. The purple mushroom head gleaming with pearls of pre-cum, thick veins running down the shaft to his pubic hair.
You licked your lips, curling one of your hands around his base, the other cupping his testacles. Then you looked up at him. He was up on his elbows, staring down at you hotly, biting his lips as he watched you in anticipation. You made sure to have and maintain eye contact and then you took him into your mouth.
He hissed, his head falling back, a loud moan following when you hollowed your cheeks to apply suction, the salty taste of his precum on your tongue.
You moved your hand up his length, still sucking, giving his testicles a gentle yet confident squeeze. Up your mouth went, your tongue circling his slit, before sucking him back in. The third time you did it, his hands clasped your shoulders.
“Stop.”
You looked up at him. Loki was breathing hard and you let his cock slide from your mouth with a wet ‘plop’.
In an instant your back was on the mattress and he hovered over you.
“Please don’t misunderstand,” he explained, voice rough, “I loved it, but I have plans.”
He settled between your legs, eyes locked on yours, hand on your thigh, pulling your leg around his waist. His hand slid up, splaying over the fullness of your ass, before giving it a firm squeeze, then sliding over the globe and dipping between your legs. When his slender digits made contact with your aching centre, you cried out. Your whole body was throbbing with need.
“All this nectar is for me?” he rasped.
You nodded.
“Oh, I have to see this.” And in one fluid motion he sat back on his heels, spreading your legs with his hands, looking at your dripping wet centre in amazement.
“Wait a moment,” he said, before he scrambled off the bed and disappeared in the corridor, only to come back a few moments later to resume his place between your legs. He handed you something with a smirk. Your glasses.
“I want you to see me.”
You put them on, your heartbeat accelerating. You bit your lip in anticipation. He looked up at you, his hot breath puffing against your wet core and then his flat tongue licked you all the way from your entrance to your clit. Your fingers fisted in the bedsheets, eyes falling shut in ecstasy, mouth open in a silent cry.
“Look at me.”
You did. He started a rhythm of licking, sucking and lapping that had the coil inside you wind up and tighten impossibly in no time at all. You fell back onto a pillow. Then he slid two fingers inside you and your hands dove into his hair, tugging, scraping.
What a visual. Loki between your legs, eyes burning into yours, humming and moaning against your clit, fingers sliding in and out of you, curling just at the right time, at the exact angle you needed. It was as if you were a book he’d read a thousand times before. Your toes curled and then you fell into the abyss. You moaned out his name over and over as the orgasm washed over you, leaving your legs shaking.
Loki moved up your body, placing kisses on your thighs, your tummy, your breasts, before he brushed some hair out of your face. You took your glasses off, he placed them on the bedside table. His eyes searched yours.
“I need you, Loki,” you managed, pulling him down.
He kissed you deeply, slowly, the taste of you on his tongue. His hips rocked forward and he slid inside you all the way to the hilt. Loki stilled and broke the kiss, resting his damp forehead against yours.
“Are you okay?” he whispered.
Your fingers caressed his back. Unable to form words, you nodded. Then he moved. His hips rocked into yours in slow, deep thrusts. He filled you so well, stimulating places inside you you didn’t know existed. Your hands ran over his back, down his sides, making him shiver. He watched you, eyes dark but warm. One hand found your swollen clit and his fingers circled and rubbed, applying the pressure you needed to fall into oblivion again. Your feet pressed into his ass cheeks to bring him closer, deeper and his name fell from your lips over and over.
He rocked inside you as you rode out your orgasm. You opened your eyes to look at him in wonder. Never had you seen anything as beautiful as Loki. He seemed to glow from the inside. Maybe it was your imagination. You lifted your head, cupping his face to pull him in for a kiss. His tongue moved languidly against yours, savouring the intimacy.
Then he started moving faster, pulling one of your legs up to rest the calf against his shoulder. Deeper, you wanted him deeper. You couldn’t get close enough. His mouth was devouring yours in a needy kiss, all tongues and teeth now as he pistoned faster into you, your hips meeting each of his thrusts. His lips found your nipple, sucking, pulling on it, moving to its sibling. You couldn’t believe you were on the verge again already. Never before had you been able to orgasm more than once during intercourse.
The room was quiet but for the moans, the heavy breathing. You were so wet that your coupling’s noise was wonderfully dirty, edging you both on even more.
“Look at us,” Loki commanded and you did.
Nothing had ever been so erotic as watching him fill you, stretch you, sliding out, covered in your juices. His fingers were on your clit again, rubbing, circling.
“I don’t know if I can…”
“One more, darling, give me one more,” he insisted, breathlessly.
His hips moved faster, as did his fingers and you were there, on the edge. Loki’s eyes met yours and he knew. His movements stuttered, pupils fully blown, jaw slack, a drop of sweat sliding down his temple.
“Cum with me,” you whispered, your fingers dragging down his back, possibly breaking skin, squeezing and pulling his ass into you.
And he did, propelling you into bliss with him. Your name fell from his lips in a string of Norse profanities. His cock pulsated as the hot ropes of his seed marked your insides as his, your pussy eagerly clenching around him, making sure every last drop would be spent inside you. His movements slowed and then he stilled, buried inside you.
Loki’s lips pressed onto yours in a tender kiss. You stayed in the embrace until you both caught your breath. Then he pulled out of you, your mixed juices running out of you. He could have cleaned you up using magic.
But Loki got out of bed, got a wet flannel from the bathroom and gently cleaned you, kissing your tired body, before sliding back into bed. He pulled you into his arms, your hands joined over his heart, legs intertwined and you both lay there, in your bubble of utter and complete happiness under warm covers, watching the snowflakes dance outside the window in the early hours of Christmas Day.
Christmas Day!
“Oh, wait here!”
You scrambled off the bed and ran to the door, forgetting about your nakedness, pulling your shoulder bag from under your coat. You pulled something from it and brought it back to Loki. He was sitting up, forearms resting on his knees, an intrigued look on his face.
“Merry Christmas,” you said.
He looked at you and then at the present you held out to him. He cocked an eyebrow as he took it and pulled the fabric ribbon off. His hands parted the paper and then he grew completely still.
“Where in the nine realms did you get this?” he asked after a few moments, voice sounding rough.
“A friend of mine got her hands on this a while back. I thought you might like it.”
He stared at the book, transfixed. His slender fingers caressing the embossed letters on the front and then he lifted it to take in the scent of the pages. His eyes closed.
“Do you? Like it, I mean?” You were worried about this book. It had cost an arm and a leg, but you thought it would be worth it.
“Like it?” Loki asked, finally looking at you and pulling you on his lap. “My mother used to read me his poems when I was a child. I rediscovered it later. This is…”
He was searching for words, failed to find them and instead kissed you, hard, hand fisting in your hair. After a long moment, he broke the kiss.
“Thank you, love.”
Your fingers wrapped around his wrist, stroking his pulse point.
“Will you read it to me?” you asked, a bit out of breath.
Nodding, he sat against the headboard, you curled up against him with his arm around you. He made sure you were both tucked under the covers. Then he opened the book and cleared his throat.
“Kormákr Ӧgmundarson ‘Sigurðardrápa ‘Drápa’. This is one of my favourites, he wrote it for the love of his life.”
His fingers wandered up your arm.
“Brunnu beggja kinna
bjǫrt ljós á mik drósar,
oss hlœgir þat eigi,
eldhúss of við felldan.”
His digits absently stroked your ribcage, skirting over the side of your breast. The rhythm and intonation of his deep voice made you clench your thighs.
“Enn til ǫkkla svanna
ítrvaxins gatk líta,
þrǫ́ muna oss of ævi
eldask, hjá þreskeldi.”
He paused, closing the book and brushing his lips against the skin of your neck. Your eyes fluttered shut.
“What-what does he say?” you all but stuttered.
Loki kissed along your collarbone. Humming against your skin.
“The bright lights of both
her cheeks burned onto me
from the fire-hall's felled wood;
no cause of mirth for me in that.”
His hands cupped your breasts as he sucked and teased one of the nipples. Your hands tugged on his hair, desperate for him again already. You felt his need hard and heavy against your thigh.
“By the threshold I gained a glance
at the ankles of this girl
of glorious shape.”
Loki moved to lie between your legs, hands sliding over your breasts, your tummy, your thigh, down to your ankle, lifting it to wrap it around his hips.
“Yet while I live
that longing will never leave me.”
His voice faltered as he rocked his hips forward and your bodies were joined once more.
“That longing will never leave me,” he repeated like a vow, eyes serious and warm.
“Nor me,” you pledged, before you lost yourselves in the physical expression of your feelings once more.

easiest conversation ⋆ carlos sainz
pairing: carlos sainz x fem!oc (named Angelique)
tropes: strangers to lovers
summary: carlos and angelique sat next to each other in a tennis match in monaco, leading to an endless conversation.
a/n: english is not my first language, sorry for the mistakes and poor storytelling. maybe a part 2 if you like it?
masterlist
Everybody was focused on Carlos' future in Formula 1, he tried so hard to not be worried about it, but every thing he does, the media somehow made it about his career as a driver. So, at the end, he couldn't do anything except being worried too. Many what ifs were in his mind anytime he thought about it.
The past weekend wete the Masters of Montecarlo, a tennis match, and taking advantage of the fact that he was in the city and most of he's teammates were also watching it, he attended as well.
Carlos didn't have the opportunity to talk to any of them, they were seated in different places in the public. Either way, seeing George, Charles and even Lando with their partners made him feel a little bit more miserable than he already felt. No seat and no girlfriend, that's not a very cool situation to be involved.
And there's even more, he doesn't even know a shit about tennis. He played paddel a few times with Lando, but tennis? He had no idea. So he just sat there, gasping when other people gasp and checking his phone once in a while.
"You seem lost," someone said.
Carlos lifts his head that exact moment, connecting looks with a light brunette that was looking at him above her sunglasses.
"Are you talking to me?" he asked, totally confused. Since when that woman was sitting by his side?.
"Yes. You look bored, maybe you just need someone to explain tennis in a cool way," she smiled. A beautiful smile.
Carlos also smiled a bit, in a weird way. Sometimes he forgots that there's people who can effortlesly talk to strangers in a cool and mysterious way. This woman was one of them.
"Yeah, sure. If you can,"
"If I can?" she seemed dramaticly offended. "You don't think a woman can explain tennis to you, man?"
"Oh, no, no, no. I didn't mean it in that way," he said quickly. "Please, go ahead."
She smiled and started explaining all about tennis in the most interesting and funny way possible.
"How do you know so much about tennis?" he asked.
"Well, I'm a tennis player," she explain. "I thought it was obvious."
Carlos noded a bit, noticing a few mobile phones and cameras pointing at them. He didn't realised it until now, and now he was wondering how many pictures and videos of him and that woman would be around the media.
"Uh, well... I mean, I have no idea about tennis," he said, nervously.
"Yeah, I could tell that," she laughed and she infected Carlos with the laughter. "I'm Angelique, by the way."
"Beautiful name. I'm Carlos," they shaked hands with smiles in their faces. He saw some redness on Angelique face after he complimented her. "So you are a tennis player?"
"Yeah." she simply answered.
"Are you good?" Carlos didn't want the conversation to die.
"I try to be," she said. "I'm fifth in the Women's Tennis Association, I don't know if that's enough for you."
Angelique pursed her lips, making a funny face that made Carlos smiled.
"That sounds really good," he said, truly impressed. They were both athletes, maybe that's why it feels so easy to talk to her.
"What about you?" she asked, raising her eyebrows.
"I'm a race driver,"
Angelique raised even more her eyebrows and wide-opened her eyes "Ok, that is so fucking cool!" she remarked. "Which team do you drive for?"
"Ferrari, but..."
"No way! That's even cooler!" she boasted. "I mean, I have no idea about Formula 1. But Ferrari? That is cool guy material, undoubtedly"
Carlos was too invested in Angelique's voice and eyebrow game that wasn't able to tell her that he isn't staying in Ferrari for too long. But they've just met, and being unemployed isn't something to say to someone right off the bat.
He realised that it was the first conversation in a while that he didn't have to mention anything about his future in Formula 1, another reason of him being this comfortable around Angelique.
"And, how did you became a tennis player?" Carlos asked, leaning a little bit to her.
Now, she was focusing on the ball and the movements of the players.
"My brother used to use me as a ball picker when he played tennis, then he broke his arm and I kept his racket," she explained without divert her eyes from the field.
"He stopped playing tennis after that?"
"Well, yes. When he could come back, he was too old and unexperience to achieve something," she said. "But he wasn't very good anyways."
They both laughed and Angelique take off her sunglasses so she could see Carlos better.
"Have you won something in tennis?" he curiously asked.
"Yeah, of course. Matchs and all those things,"
"Have you beaten Serena Williams?" he wondered, with a smirk.
"Not yet," she admited. "But I've won against people who beat Serena."
She smiled proudly. The match was about to end, and none of them were paying attention to it.
"Okey, that's pretty awesome," he said.
She crossed her legs and accomodated her long brown hair to one side, which left Carlos eyeing her in a romantic way.
"And you? How someone decides that he wants to drive really fast cars?"
"My father has been involved in motorsports for a long time,"
"It's always a family thing, don't you think?" she said. "It is hard to find someone who started in sports by themselves."
"It is!" Carlos agreed with her.
He was going to say something else, but they announce the end of the match, everybody standed up to give an applause. Both of them copied the rest of the people.
"Wait, who won?" Carlos asked, totally confused.
Angelique lean into him, whispering "I've no idea,"
They laughed and kept applausing. That was the end of the match and the end of their conversation. Angelique's agent rapidly came to her to take some pictures with the winner.
"Wait, wait," she insisted to her agent and then walked close to Carlos. "It was lovely talking to you, Carlos,"
"Same, Angelique. You seem an interesting person," he complimented. Carlos was willing to ask her for her number, or something.
"Are you coming to the finals tomorrow?" she asked, praying for a yes.
"I don't think so... I have a race soon in China,"
"Oh," she seemed disappointed. "Well, good luck for your race and..."
"Can I asked you for your number?" he said unexpectedly.
"Yes!" she realised that maybe she was too effusive, so she lower her tone. "I mean, yeah, sure. If you want."
Carlos laughed and Angelique did it too, in a more ashamed way. He gave her his phone so she could write her number.
"There you go," she said and her agent was already near her to leave the match. "Text me!"
Carlos laughed and waved at her, when he looked at his phone, he could do anything but laughed again. Angelique saved her as "That cute girl from the tennis match".
He wondered what was about that girl that made her so unique and easy to talk to her. Carlos didn't think about it very much, instead, he texted her right after she left the field.

Chapter 7 (alt ending 1.3) - Sapphire Echoes
Gumi: Why did you invite them to your place?!
Gumi: I’m coming over, and if I find them there, I’ll kill them!
// Playlist
The sunlight was golden, warm, and gentle, streaming through the large windows of a house you didn’t recognize but somehow felt like home. The faint scent of jasmine lingered in the air, mingling with the soft hum of laughter as you walked outside the house.
“Alright, gremlins,” Gojo announced, spinning on his heel. “Today, Daddy is going to teach you how to fight. It’s all about flair and finesse.”
Nanami, standing a few feet away with his arms crossed, let out a long, suffering sigh. “You’re not their only father, and they don’t need flair. They need discipline and control.”
Gojo turned, gasping like Nanami had just insulted his very existence. “Discipline? Control? What are we, accountants?”
“I wasn’t an accountant; I was an investment broker. There’s a difference; I wouldn’t expect your non-college graduate ass to understand,” Nanami deadpanned, adjusting his glasses.
“Exactly my point!” Gojo shot back, pointing a finger at him. “That’s why they need me. To balance out your boring lectures.”
“Balance?” Nanami arched an eyebrow. “You’ve never balanced anything in your life, including your own emotions.”
Their nine-year-old daughter, golden-haired and mischievous, stood between them, bouncing on her toes with excitement. “Daddy, can I use Ratio to mess with people? Like... cut the hair of the boy I like?”
Gojo’s grin widened, his sunglasses slipping down his nose. “Now that’s my girl. Even I didn’t think of that!”
Nanami pinched the bridge of his nose. “No. You cannot use cursed techniques for petty pranks. It will get you suspended or arrested.”
“But what if it’s a really good prank?” She countered, her hazel eyes sparkling with mischief.
Gojo crouched down beside her, whispering loudly enough for everyone to hear. “Don’t listen to him. Petty pranks are the best kind.”
“Absolutely not,” Nanami snapped, his tone sharper now. “You’re already too much like him.”
The girl beamed, taking it as a compliment. “Thanks, Dada!”
You, standing off to the side, covered your mouth to stifle a laugh. “You have given birth to female Gojo, Ken. She’s your little chaos gremlin. Just accept it.”
“She’s your chaos gremlin too,” he muttered, shooting you a look that said he blamed you for this. Gojo was very smug about the fact, not even attempting to hide it.
Meanwhile, their son stood off to the side, arms crossed and a perpetual frown etched onto his face. His white hair fell into his blue eyes, which were narrowed in quiet judgment.
“This is stupid,” he muttered, his voice carrying all the weight of some adult who thought he knew better than everyone else.
Nanami turned to him, his expression softening slightly. “What’s ridiculous?”
“All of it,” the boy replied, gesturing vaguely at his sister and Gojo, who were now snickering about the ethical implications of using ratio to cheat at board games. “They’re wasting time.”
Gojo overheard and gasped. “Wasting time? I’m teaching valuable life skills here!”
The boy didn’t even blink. “You’re teaching her how to be annoying.”
“Exactly!” Gojo said, throwing his arms wide. “And what’s more important than that?”
“Literally everything,” the boy replied flatly, his tone so deadpan that even Nanami’s lips twitched in amusement.
“Alright, enough talk,” Gojo declared, clapping his hands together. “Let’s spar. Chaos Gremlin versus Mr. Rainy Day.”
Their daughter lit up, bouncing on her toes. “Yes! I’m gonna crush you!”
The boy sighed, stepping into position. “You’re going to lose.”
“Over my dead body,” she shot back, her energy already crackling around her.
Nanami and Gojo stood on opposite sides of the field, both offering advice at the same time.
“Focus on control!” Nanami called out.
“Forget control! Style is everything!” Gojo yelled.
You stood between them, arms crossed. “How about we let them figure it out without shouting conflicting advice?”
Both men glared at each other but stayed quiet—for about five seconds.
The sparring began, their cursed techniques clashing in a brilliant display. The boy moved with focus, his infinity stretching around him. His sister, on the other hand, darted around unpredictably, her movements wild but effective, her ratio blades slicing through the air like a scalpel.
“Don’t just stand there, Emo Kid!” Gojo hollered. “Go for the win!”
“Precision,” Nanami muttered under his breath, his eyes locked on his son. “Wait for her to make a mistake.”
“She doesn’t make mistakes,” Gojo countered. “She’s perfect.”
“You’re impossible,” Nanami replied, his voice flat.
//
When the sparring ended, both kids were panting but grinning, their energy buzzing in the air around them.
“You did great,” you said, taking both their hands. “Both of you.”
“Better than great,” Gojo added, ruffling his son’s hair. “You’re unstoppable.”
Nanami knelt beside his daughter, brushing a strand of hair from her face. “You’ve improved. But don’t get cocky.”
“Too late,” she replied, grinning up at him.
Letting go of your hands, the children ran ahead, their laughter blending with the rustling leaves as they played with their blobfish plushies.
The sun dipped lower in the sky, casting a warm glow over the scene as it settled into something softer, something whole.
You watched them with awe, your heart full to bursting. “They are beautiful.”
Gojo winked at you. “Of course they are. Look at their parents.”
Nanami glanced at you, his hazel eyes warm. “You’ve done well.”
The sun was now setting, casting the world in hues of orange and pink.
Gojo slid an arm around your shoulders, pulling you close. “See? Told you we’d make a great team.”
Nanami stood on your other side, his presence grounding. “You should sit,” he said softly, gesturing to a bench beneath a blooming cherry blossom tree.
You sat, watching the children play as the two men sat beside you, their presence comforting and familiar.
The boy turned, his bright blue eyes locking onto yours. “Mama, are you happy?” he asked, his voice carrying an innocence that made your chest tighten.
Tears pricked your eyes as you nodded. “Yes, sweetheart. I’m very happy.”
The world shifted abruptly. The warmth of the sun faded, replaced by the cold gray light of dawn filtering through your bedroom curtains.
You opened your eyes slowly, the weight of the dream pressing against your chest like a heavy stone.
Your cheeks were damp, but as you raised a trembling hand to touch them, you realized your eyes were dry. No tears fell. You were too numb for that now.
The laughter, the warmth, the love—it had all been a cruel illusion. The reality of your empty arms and silent home was suffocating.
Sukuna’s voice broke the silence from the doorway. “Another bad night?”
You didn’t answer, your gaze fixed on the sea outside the window. The waves rolled endlessly, a reflection of the ache in your chest.
“They’re still yours,” his words a faint echo of something he’d said before.
But they weren’t.
And they never would be.

Few years ago
The streets glistened with rain, neon signs shimmering in puddles as the faint hum of late-night activity drifted through the cool air. You walked at an easy pace, your heels clicking softly against the pavement. The buzz of alcohol warmed your veins. Tonight, the world seemed softer, its edges blurred, though your mind remained sharp, processing everything around you with clarity.
Gojo Satoru leaned lazily against the post, his white hair catching the glow like freshly fallen snow. Beside him, Nanami Kento stood with his frown deepened by the chill in the air.
“She’s late,” Gojo said in Japanese, glancing at his phone. His voice carried a teasing lilt, though his gaze lingered on the street, betraying his anticipation.
“She doesn’t strike me as someone who cancels plans without notice,” Nanami replied evenly, though his hands tightened slightly in his coat pockets.
Gojo smirked. “Oh? Nanamin’s been paying attention.”
“Don’t call me that.”
Before their banter could escalate, you turned the corner, your long coat swaying with your stride. Your hair, tousled by the breeze, framed a face softened by warmth and openness, an unusual sight for someone as composed as you.
Gojo’s eyes lit up as he nudged Nanami, practically bouncing on his feet. “Nanamin! It’s her! Pretty hoodie lady!” He exclaimed in English, pointing at you like a kid spotting their favorite toy in a store.
Nanami groaned audibly, pressing his palm to his face. “Could you not yell across the street like a lunatic?”
But Gojo wasn’t listening. He was already halfway to you, his enthusiasm cutting through the chill like a warm gust of wind.
“Hey! Pretty hoodie lady!” Gojo’s voice rang out.
“Gojo,” Nanami called after him as he followed. “Don’t run off—”
But you didn't hear and turned in the direction Nanami was coming from.
You suddenly collided with your nose smushing into something firm and expensive-smelling.
“Watch where you're going, you...”
“Careful there,” Nanami’s voice came, smooth and tinged with dry amusement.
Gojo skidded to a halt, his grin growing impossibly wider.
You took a step back, studying them with a raised brow. Recognition flickered as you met their gazes. “Oh, it’s you two.”
“You remember us!” Gojo exclaimed, his English broken but still managing to convey his excitement. However, it was better than the last time. Had he been practicing?! His voice carried a note of pride, as if he’d accomplished something monumental by being memorable.
“Oh, it’s mysterious hoodie lady,” Gojo added, adjusting his sunglasses.
“Fancy seeing you here,” Nanami said, his tone measured, though his eyes flicked over you briefly, assessing and ensuring you were unharmed.
“Gentlemen,” you replied, a small smile tugging at your lips. “Fancy bumping into me.” The alcohol humming through your veins lent a teasing edge to your voice. “But I’m not mad—unless you’re boring. Then we’ll have problems.”
Gojo tilted his head, squinting in confusion. “What she say?”
Nanami sighed, his patience thinning. “She’s challenging you not to be boring.”
“Ohhh!” Gojo’s grin widened, his excitement bubbling over. “I am never boring!”
Nanami questioned. “We didn’t mean to disturb you.”
“You’re not disturbing me,” you replied, your voice warm but measured. “Though, I didn’t expect to see you two again.”
Gojo grinned, his English fumbling but earnest. “We... walking! Saw you!”
Nanami raised an eyebrow, muttering under his breath, “Walking, my ass.”
You chuckled softly, your eyes briefly catching Nanami’s. Without the hood obstructing your vision, you saw warmth and intensity, like the first rays of sunlight breaking through winter’s chill. His gaze wrapped around you, offering solace in a chaotic world, igniting a warmth within you that spread like a soft glow. In that fleeting moment, it felt as if he had touched your soul, awakening a longing for something deeper, something beautifully profound.
Your gaze shifted to Gojo, his eyes peeking over dark sunglasses—a brilliant blue that seemed to hold entire galaxies within them. Time stood still, the world around you fading into a soft blur. You had never seen such eyes—vivid and alive, sparkling with mischief and depth, as if they could read the very essence of your soul. They were the kind of eyes poets raved about, capable of igniting a fire in your heart and weaving a spell
You quickly looked away from the radioactive orbs in the name of eyes he had; it seemed the alcohol was getting to you.
Nanami cleared his throat. “Can we walk you home? It’s late.” His tone even but laced with genuine concern
You nodded your head, your smile softening.
Unbeknownst to you, the men were nearly high-fiving behind you—at least they would have if Nanami weren’t busy trying to engrave your face into his memory. It had taken Gojo standing atop the tallest building to find you. They were supposed to leave the night they met you at the convention, but Yaga had yelled at them to come back every hour since. Yet, they still didn’t know your full name or anything else about you.
“He’s like a Samoyed in human form,” you mused aloud, tilting your head as you studied Gojo.
Gojo almost froze, blinking rapidly. “Samo... what?”
“A Samoyed,” you repeated, grinning. “You know, the big fluffy white dogs that are always happy and smiling?”
Gojo’s jaw dropped. “You think I’m fluffy?”
“Fluffy and cheerful,” you clarified.
Nanami snorted softly, but you turned to him before he could speak. “And you,” you said, gesturing toward him, “you’re... a grumpy Akita Inu. Specifically Hachikō.”
Gojo immediately burst into laughter, clutching his stomach. “Grumpy Akita! Nanamin, that’s so you!”
Nanami’s lips pressed into a thin line, his brows furrowing as he shot Gojo a sharp look. “Stop laughing.”
“But she’s right!” Gojo wheezed, wiping at his eyes behind his sunglasses. “You’re dependable and serious, waiting around like some tragic hero.” He spoke half the words in Japanese.
Nanami ignored him, his attention shifting to you instead, expression unreadable. “Hachikō, the dog known for its loyalty?”
You nodded, your tone softening. “Yeah. Always dependable, always waiting, even when people don’t deserve it. That being said, I wouldn’t wish Hachikō’s fate on you.”
For a moment, his expression flickered—something thoughtful, maybe even vulnerable, passing through his eyes before he nodded. “I see.”
Gojo, however, was still basking in the revelation. “Fluffy and adorable. That’s me!” he declared.
“Adorable is debatable,” Nanami muttered under his breath, earning another laugh from you.
Before Gojo could respond, you added, “Speaking of dogs, have you heard of Etah ?”
Both men’s curiosity piqued.
“Etah was the first dog to reach the South Pole,” you began. “She led Roald Amundsen’s expedition in 1911, surviving the harshest conditions imaginable. A Samoyed, of course—happy, dependable, and heroic. Out of 52 dogs on the expedition, only 12 survived tragically.”
Nanami was live translating for you and Gojo.
Gojo’s grin faltered, replaced by an expression of awe. “Wait, a dog did that? Like, first to the South Pole?”
You nodded, your gaze steady on him. “Exactly. She led the way, braved the cold, and ensured the expedition’s success. And after all that, she lived out her life as a cherished companion to royalty.”
Nanami’s brows rose slightly, his stoicism softening as he murmured, “A testament to loyalty and resilience.”
“Exactly,” you agreed, your excitement bubbling beneath the surface. “She’s a symbol of courage and adaptability. Like Hachikō, but with a touch of adventure.”
Gojo leaned closer, his sunglasses slipping down his nose. “So, you’re saying I’m like Etah? A heroic, adventurous dog with a happy ending?”
You smirked, tilting your head. “Sure, if you can brave the cold and not get distracted by every snowflake.”
Nanami’s lips twitched into the faintest smile. “I think you’d get lost in the snow, Gojo.”
“Hey!” Gojo shot back, his grin unwavering. “That’s what I’d have you for, Nanamin. My loyal Akita, leading the way.”
Nanami sighed heavily, but the faint flush creeping up his neck didn’t escape your notice.
“Of course you’d need him,” you teased, your tone light but cutting. “Not every hero dog gets to live out their life with royalty.”
Gojo’s grin turned thoughtful, a rare flicker of sincerity breaking through his usual bravado as he spoke in half English, half Japanese. “Well, if you’re the royalty, I’m in.”
Nanami muttered something under his breath, his gaze flickering to you for a moment longer than necessary. For all the absurdity of Gojo’s antics, he wasn’t entirely immune to the pull of your presence.
“So, you both are sorcerers?” You asked, walking ahead. You were curious about their techniques. Otherwise, you would have ignored them as Megumi had advised.
Both men froze for a moment. Then Nanami cleared his throat. “Ah, yes. It seems your friend told you about us.”
“All good things, I hope!” Gojo chimed in.
You glanced at him, amused. “Something like that. If it’s okay, could you explain your techniques to me?” You asked, still looking ahead, your expression serene.
Gojo leaned toward Nanami. “What’s she saying now?”
“She wants us to explain our techniques,” Nanami replied in Japanese, his voice deadpan.
Gojo blinked, clearly delighted. “Oh! You want to know my power?”
“Yes,” you said, your tone calm but your eyes sharp.
Both men noted your reluctance to discuss the man with the sea urchin hair, but Nanami was feeling unusually chatty, so he began explaining while Gojo confused you the entire time and interrupted every few seconds with exaggerated gestures and broken English, insisting that his “Infinity is best!”
As the conversation continued, you noticed how Gojo’s childlike enthusiasm and Nanami’s quiet attentiveness complemented each other. There was something grounding about their presence, something that made the world feel a little less chaotic.
“I’m starting to see why you two balance each other out,” you said, your lips twitching with amusement.
Nanami’s gaze flicked to you, a faint softness in his eyes. “Balance isn’t the word I’d use.”
Gojo, oblivious to the subtleties, beamed. “She thinks we team!”
Both men were observing your wit.
“She’s interesting,” Nanami said lowly to Gojo in Japanese, his tone understated but firm.
Gojo grinned, his gaze lingering on the back of your head a few steps ahead. “Interesting doesn’t even cover it.”
//
They hadn't planned for this. The warm glow of overhead lights reflected off the rain-slick streets outside, adding a cozy intimacy to the atmosphere. You, Nanami, and Gojo were tucked into a booth near the window, the warmth seeping into your hands as you warmed them on the small portable heater near the table.
Nanami sat across from you while Gojo had wedged himself into the seat beside you, his energy a contrast to the café ’s tranquil ambiance.
“You seem... relaxed tonight,” Nanami observed, his voice calm but tinged with curiosity. His gaze flicked briefly to your flushed cheeks before settling back on your eyes.
“I’m in a good mood,” you replied, the mischief in your tone evident as you leaned back against the booth. “A productive day, good company, and now, a surprise reunion.”
Gojo perked up, resting his chin on his hand as he leaned in closer. “You like surprises?”
“Depends on the surprise,” you replied, a small smirk tugging at your lips as you met his gaze. “This one isn’t bad.”
Nanami cleared his throat, steering the conversation. “You mentioned good company earlier. Were you out with friends?”
“My CHRO,” you said casually, taking a sip of your drink.
Gojo frowned, his brows knitting together. “CH... R... O?”
Nanami sighed, his tone weary but patient. “Chief Human Resources Officer.”
“Oh!” Gojo’s face lit up like he’d just solved a riddle. “Office talk!”
You chuckled softly, your smile enigmatic. “Something like that. But enough about me. What about you two? What brings you out tonight?”
Gojo tilted his head toward Nanami, grinning. “Fate!”
Nanami groaned under his breath. “Don’t mind him. We were... exploring the city.”
Your raised eyebrow and faint smile told them you weren’t convinced, but you let it slide.
The server approached, her eyes lingering on Nanami and Gojo a moment too long as asking them, ignoring you. “What can I get you all tonight?”
You grinned, too tipsy to notice the slight snub. “Surprise me.”
Gojo continued looking at your smile subtly—which wasn’t very subtle to Nanami—his voice rude. “Same for me.” The server’s pettyness had not escaped his six eyes.
Nanami ordered black coffee, his tone clipped as usual. He wasn’t trying to be rude; people often misinterpreted his demeanor as arrogance or indifference. Well, the indifference part was true.
You stared at him in mock disbelief. “Black coffee? At this hour? You’re the most boring person I’ve ever met.” You didn’t really mind; hell, you chugged black coffee by the gallon on work nights; you just wanted to see how he’d react to teasing.
Nanami arched an eyebrow, his lips curving ever so slightly. “And yet, here you are.”
Damn, he was smooth.
Your laugh rang out, light and melodic, catching Gojo’s attention. His grin softened as he glanced at Nanami, something unspoken passing between them.
//
After some time, the three of you stood near the counter. The waitress smiled and handed over the bill with a smile directed solely at Nanami and Gojo. You, however, were laser-focused on the receipt, your eyes narrowing as you reached into your coat pocket.
“I’ve got this,” you said firmly, already pulling out your wallet. It’s not like you didn’t let people pay for you. Paying for you was a privilege they hadn’t earned yet. Men had a way of starting to expect things after spending even a little money, and you had learned that the hard way.
“Absolutely not,” Nanami countered, already pulling out his own wallet. His tone was calm, but the sharpness in his eyes screamed ‘ chivalry or death .’
“Wait, wait, wait!” Gojo interjected, his sunglasses slipping as he reached into his coat. “I got this! Sugar mommy powers activated!”
You blinked at him, momentarily thrown. “Gojo, you can’t be a sugar mommy. You’re a sugar baby at best.”
Gojo gasped, clutching his chest as if you’d mortally wounded him. “I’m offended! I’m both!”
Before you could respond, Nanami stepped between you two, his wallet already open. “Enough. This isn’t up for debate. I’ll handle it.”
You weren’t having it. “You think I can’t pay?” You challenged, stepping closer to Nanami like you were about to square up.
Nanami blinked, caught off guard. “This isn’t about capability. It’s about manners.”
“Oh, hell no , Nanami,” you snapped, whipping out your American Express Centurion Card like a weapon. The black card gleamed under the café lights as you waved it in his face. “You think I can’t pay? Watch me!”
Gojo, delighted, leaned toward Nanami and whispered in Japanese, “She’s challenging your honor, man.”
Nanami shot him a glare before turning back to you. “It’s courtesy.”
A mischievous grin tugged at your lips. “Then courteously let me pay.”
Gojo, now leaning dramatically over the counter, held up his own card—a flashy platinum piece that looked like it had seen better days. “Mine’s shinier!”
“Shut up, Gojo!” Both you and Nanami barked simultaneously.
Nanami placed his card on the counter, only for you to slap it away with a quick flick of your wrist. “Denied!”
Gojo cackled, tossing his card onto the counter like it was a poker chip. “Bet you can’t top this!”
You scoffed, “Oh, you wanna play? I brought backups.” Pulling your wallet open wider, revealing the JP Morgan Reserve Card, the Dubai First Royale MasterCard, and the Coutts World Silk Card nestled inside.
Gojo’s jaw dropped, his English breaking. “You... you have... many shinies !”
Nanami’s eye twitched as he reached for his card again, but you weren’t having it. “Stay in your lane, Mr. Black Coffee!”
“Don’t push me,” Nanami warned.
“I’ll will,” you shot back, your grin unhinged.
Finally, Gojo stepped back, holding up his hands in mock surrender. “Okay, okay, you win,” he said, nodding toward your Centurion Card. “Black card... scary.”
You smirked, triumphant. “Damn right.”
Nanami glared at Gojo and asked him in Japanese, “Don’t you have that card too?”
Gojo rubbed the back of his head and answered, “I do, but I forgot it in Japan.”
Nanami, however, was far from relenting. “This isn’t over,” he muttered, placing his Rakuten Bank Super Premium Card on top of yours with the quiet determination of a man who had never lost a battle of principles.
“Nanami,” you said, leaning closer, your tone deceptively sweet, eyelashes fluttering up at him, like you were asking for a puppy and not his honour, “are you really going to do this?”
“Yes,” he deadpaned.
“Fine.” You whispered in his ear, slightly closer, with your villainous energy directed at the wrong man. “But I will win.”
If Nanami was a weaker man, his resolve would have cracked.
Gojo, watching the scene unfold with stars in his eyes, clapped his hands together and yelled in Japanese. “This is the best date ever.”
Nanami was too busy not to get a hard on in public to glare at Gojo.
The poor cashier, overwhelmed, finally chose your card just to end the madness. You released Nanami with a victorious grin; your card already swiped.
“I told you,” you said smugly, slipping your wallet back into your coat pocket. Then took out your pen to sign.
Nanami sighed heavily, pinching the bridge of his nose. “You’re impossible.”
You laughed. “Don’t worry, Nanami. Next time, you can fight me for it. Winner pays.”
Gojo whispered loudly in Japanese. “She’s rich, Nanamin! Like, sugar mommy rich!” All his dreams of finding a fractos mother were coming true even though he was already rich.
Nanami groaned, his chivalry bruised but intact, ears red.
Gojo ignored him, turning to you with a wide grin. “You... pay for my snacks forever?”
You tilted your head, amused. “Why? Can’t you afford them?”
Nanami, sensing an opportunity, leaned toward Gojo and said in Japanese, “She asked if you’d like to pay her back by taking her trash out.”
Gojo’s grin faltered. “Trash?” he echoed, confused.
You chuckled, sensing the exchange but choosing not to pry. “Don’t worry, Gojo. I won’t make you do anything you don’t want to.”
Gojo’s grin returned in full force. “I love you!”
Nanami was grateful Gojo didn’t know English for ‘I love you’ yet, or you’d get a restraining order.
As the transaction completed, the two men subtly—or not so subtly—took stock of your outfit to try and assess how rich you were in order to conclude what you did for a living.
“Shoes,” Nanami whispered to Gojo in Japanese.
“Designer,” Gojo answered after a glance.
“Coat?”
“Custom.” Gojo replied, then asked, “Watch?”
“Limited edition.”
Gojo’s eyes sparkled as you turned back. “You... very stylish!” he declared in his adorable English, giving you a thumbs-up.
You raised an eyebrow, clearly amused. “Thank you, Gojo. You’re very observant.”
Nanami sighed. “You’re enabling him.”
“I think it’s endearing,” you replied with a soft laugh, your gaze briefly meeting Nanami’s. “Besides, you two are fun. And rare.”
Gojo turned to Nanami, grinning. “She said we’re rare! Like Pokémon!”
Nanami muttered something under his breath, but his ears were bright red now.
As the three of you stepped back into the rain-kissed streets, Gojo bounded ahead, clearly pleased with the outcome of the evening, while Nanami lingered at your side, his mind still piecing together the puzzle of who you really were.
“You’re quite mysterious,” Nanami remarked finally, his voice low enough that Gojo couldn’t hear.
You smiled knowingly. “And you’re quite perceptive.”
Nanami’s lips twitched into the faintest smile as Gojo spun around, his arms outstretched. The conversation shifted as the three of you continued walking, your strides falling into an easy rhythm.
You briefly caught Nanami’s gaze before glancing up at the night sky. “It’s a nice night, isn’t it? You can even see a few stars despite the city lights.”
Nanami followed your gaze. “Surprising, given the light pollution.”
Gojo squinted at the sky, then at you. “They pretty like you.”
Nanami’s eyes widened.
You laughed; the sound light and melodic. “Not quite; you are the star.” You paused, thinking, then continued. “Like our sun—bright, strong, impossible to miss. You keep things alive, but you burn so intensely that it’s hard for people to get close enough to truly understand you.”
Gojo’s grin faltered, something unreadable flickering in his expression. “Sun... me?”
You nodded, turning to Nanami. “And you... you’re like a lighthouse. Constant, steady, always guiding. People only notice when they need you, but you’re always there, no matter what.”
Nanami stiffened, his stoicism betraying a hint of vulnerability. “You have a way with metaphors.”
You smiled, shrugging. “Maybe I’m drunk. Or maybe I’m just observant.”
Gojo perked up. “You ultraviolet rays.”
You looked at him, speechless.
Nanami smacked his head. “That’s rude.”
Gojo rubbed the back of his head and explained in Japanese, “What? It provides vitamin D synthesis, photosynthesis, and regulation of biological rhythms. She is smart and strong. Tell her in English.”
Nanami sighed and translated as you blushed, glancing at Gojo, who looked particularly proud of himself.
But Nanami wouldn’t back down easily. “I think you are like the North Star; you provide direction and clarity to those around you. Constant in the night sky, you are reliable. Most people might not notice you for your worth, but your influence is profound, much like how your contributions, though sometimes invisible, are vital and impactful.”
You hid your face in your collar, turning away as you walked, your blush deepening.
“So,” you asked, breaking the awkward silence after a beat, “what’s your favorite food?”
“He likes sandwiches, and I love sweets!” Gojo exclaimed immediately, his enthusiasm palpable.
You grinned. “Me too. In reasonable quantities.”
Nanami exhaled faintly. "Oh, thank God.”
You ignored his quip, focusing back on Gojo. “Do you like dark chocolate?”
Gojo nodded fervently. “Yes! With... strawberries!” Nanami hummed in agreement as well.
“Good taste,” you said approvingly. “But since you like sweets, I think you’d enjoy something from my country. It’s warm, soft, and melts in your mouth. Perfect for a night like this.”
Gojo’s eyes lit up. “I want! You make?”
Nanami tensed at Gojo’s words. “Please forgive him; he’s too enthusiastic.”
You tilted your head, studying Gojo while waving away Nanami's concerns with your hand. “Maybe. But first, lower your Infinity.” Then turned to Nanami and added, “And your ratio thing.”
Nanami’s brows shot up. “That’s a strange request.”
Gojo hesitated, glancing between you and Nanami. “Why?”
You shrugged, a teasing glint in your eyes. “Because I asked nicely.”
Gojo huffed, muttering something in Japanese that sounded suspiciously like “fine,” before lowering his Infinity.
Without warning, you lunged, fingers digging into his sides as you tickled him mercilessly. Halfway through, you felt his hard muscles—he looked built, like a well-defined wall.
“W-what?!” Gojo shrieked, laughter bubbling uncontrollably as he tried to fend you off. “Stop! Evil lady!”
You stepped back, smirking. “I wasn’t expecting you to agree so easily. You trusted me so adorably—I couldn’t resist. Consider this a free lession.” You laughed, then your tone softened. “But really, I wanted to touch your hand. I wanted to know how your skin feels.”
Gojo blinked, his laughter fading as his cheeks flush. Nanami was trying to hide his face.
You extended your hand to both men. “Come on. If you’re interested, I’ll make you that sweet. It’s worth the walk.”
Nanami sighed. “Are you sure? We don’t want to impose; it’s pretty late.”
You smiled and nodded.
Both men immediately offered their hands to you.
These two would go to war for you—just for your smile, no hesitation.
//
By the time you reached your place, the warmth of the alcohol had faded, leaving you pleasantly sleepy.
“You two are coming in,” you declared, unlocking the door.
Nanami frowned. “That’s not necessary—”
“It’s cold,” you interrupted, pushing the door open. “And I’m making sweets. Come in or stay out, your choice.”
Gojo practically dragged Nanami inside, kicking off his shoes with a grin.
The warmth of your penthouse greeted you as you led them inside, shedding your coat. The men had noticed the extreme security while entering your building, and your place looked expensive, leading them to deduce you were more than averagely wealthy.
“Make yourselves comfortable,” you said, heading toward the kitchen.
Gojo immediately flopped onto your couch, poking at the cushions, while Nanami stood awkwardly near the door, his posture still composed.
“Do you always invite strangers into your home?” Nanami asked, his tone laced with mild disapproval.
“Only the ones who lower their Infinity and that cutting thing for me,” you replied with a grin.
Nanami sighed but his lips twitched, hinting at a smile. “It’s called ratio blades.”
You nodded, washed your hands and began preparing the syrup and dough.
As you worked, Gojo wandered around your living room, poking at your figurines—most of them from your own company’s games—and photos. “Cats! So many cats!”
“I like cats,” you said simply, rolling the dough into perfect spheres.
Nanami joined Gojo, his gaze landing on a framed self-portrait you had taken a long time ago. “Did you take all these?”
You nodded. “Photography’s my thing. Cats are my favorite subjects.”
Their attention shifted to a large portrait of you and Megumi from an event. He stood stiffly looking at you while you smiled at the camera, his parents in the background. Gojo scowled at Toji’s face.
The smell of caramelized sugar filled the air as you carried a tray of warm, syrup-soaked sweets to the table, and Gojo immediately forgot about Toji.
"Careful, it’s hot,” you warned, placing the tray on the coffee table. The men took a seat on the couch opposite you.
Gojo’s eyes sparkled as he picked one up, blowing on it before taking his first bite. A soft hum of delight escaped him. “This is heaven. Marry me!” He exclaimed in Japanese.
Still Nanami choked, shooting Gojo a glare. He took his time with his dessert, his expression softening with each bite. “You weren’t exaggerating. This is excellent; he likes it too.”
You leaned back with one for yourself, watching them with a small smile as you chewed your own. “Glad you like it.”
The three of you sat in companionable silence, the warmth of the room and the dessert lulling you into a state of drowsy contentment.
Without much thought, you curled up on the couch across from them, yawning and closing your eyes, unintentionally dozing off with two strangers in your house.
“She’s like a cat,” Gojo murmured in Japanese, his voice softer than usual.
Nanami studied you. “A very drunk cat.”
“But she can hold her liquor.”
“Except for turning into a frat bro dying to fight people.” Nanami deadpaned, making Gojo chuckle.
They sat in silence for a while, the only sound being the soft hum of the heater as you completely dozed off.
Gojo broke the silence first, still speaking softly in Japanese. “Hey, Nanamin. Think she likes us?”
Nanami glanced at him. “Us?”
Gojo shrugged, his grin a little softer. “You know. Like... us us.”
Nanami sighed, running a hand through his hair. “I didn’t plan for this.”
“Neither did I,” Gojo admitted. “But... I don’t hate it.”
Nanami glanced at Gojo, then back at you. “Neither do I.”
“Let’s see where this goes,” Gojo said softly.
Nanami nodded, his usual frown easing.
Just then, your phone rang loudly, startling you awake. You apologized to the men, "Sorry, I dozed off. It’s been a long day.” They smiled, still shoving sweets into their mouths occasionally—well, mostly Gojo.
You fished your phone from your pocket, accidentally cutting the call. Rubbing your eyes, you opened it to find:
Gumi: I thought I told you to stay away from those two?!
Gumi: Why did you invite them to your place?!
Gumi: I’m coming over, and if I find them there, I’ll kill them!
Gumi: Why the fuck are you cutting my calls?!
Gumi: I swear I’m beheading them.
You immediately stood up, startled. “You need to go!”
The men looked at you, confused.
“I can’t explain! Just please go right now!” Panic surged through you, serious enough to pull you out of your drunken sleepy haze. They put the sweets down and got up to leave, but you yelled again, “Not from the front door!”
Nanami groaned as you practically pushed him and Gojo through the back door and slammed the door into their faces.
Just then they realized something.
They still didn't really know anything about you except that you were observant, made them sweets and would fight to pay for others.
//
The silence that followed after you slammed the back door was short-lived. You took a deep breath, your heart pounding, as you tried to regain your composure. The faint sound of the heater humming did little to ease the tension building in the room.
A knock on the front door shattered the calm. It wasn’t a polite knock—it was authoritative, demanding.
You sighed, muttering under your breath, “God help me...”
You barely had time to brace yourself before the door swung open with a force that sent it rebounding slightly on its hinges.
Megumi stood in the doorway, his tailored suit pristine, but his face was anything but composed. His piercing blue eyes scanned the room like a predator assessing its territory, his jaw clenched so tightly you swore you heard his teeth grinding.
His gaze landed on you first, narrowing as he took in the faint flush on your cheeks and the slightly disheveled state of your hair. “You’ve been drinking,” he said flatly, the accusation sharp.
His gaze swept the room like a hawk, narrowing when he spotted the faint remnants of the sweets you’d shared with Gojo and Nanami.
You crossed your arms, meeting his glare with a raised eyebrow. “Good evening to you too, Megumi.”
“Don’t start,” he snapped, stepping into your living room. The air seemed to chill slightly as he moved closer, his presence both imposing and familiar.
The faint scent of alcohol clearly irritated him further. “You smell like a distillery. And there are cursed energy signatures everywhere. They were here, weren’t they?”
Your stomach twisted as his words hung in the air. He wasn’t asking; he was stating a fact.
“I drank earlier, but not with them. And yes, they were here,” you admitted, leaning casually against the back of the couch. “And they left.”
Megumi’s eyes darkened, his frame tense as he stalked further into the room. His presence felt heavier than usual, the weight of his restrained fury palpable. “I told you to stay away from them,” he growled, his voice low and dangerous.
“You did,” you replied calmly, meeting his glare without flinching. “But I don’t recall signing a contract.”
His voice was quieter now but no less intense. “What were they doing here?”
“Eating sweets,” you replied simply as if his looming figure didn’t faze you.
Megumi’s jaw tightened. “You’re joking.”
“Not at all. They’re big fans of dessert,” you said with a faint smirk, your nonchalance clearly irritating him further.
“Do you have any idea who they are?” He demanded, his voice rising slightly.
“Two sorcerers who are surprisingly bad at hiding their curiosity,” you replied, your tone calm.
Megumi’s lips pressed into a thin line as his gaze swept the room. Without warning, he moved past you, scanning every corner with the precision of someone who missed nothing.
“Gumi,” you said, following him as he moved toward the kitchen. “They’re gone. I’m fine.”
He ignored you, his eyes scanning the area as if expecting to find Gojo or Nanami hiding behind the fridge.
When he turned back to you, his expression was a mix of frustration and something deeper—something protective. “You don’t understand what they’re capable of,” he said, his tone clipped. “You’re not a sorcerer. You can’t handle this.”
“I’m not helpless,” you countered, crossing your arms. “And I don’t need you babysitting me.”
His fists clenched at his sides, his shoulders taut with barely restrained anger. “You think this is about babysitting? You’re the only person I care about besides Mom,” he bit out, his voice cracking slightly. “Do you know how easy it would be for them to hurt you?”
“They’re not going to hurt me, Megumi,” you said, your voice softening.
He scoffed, his frustration spilling over. “You don’t know that. They’re sorcerers. They live in a world where people like you—people without cursed energy—are collateral damage.”
You stepped closer, your tone steady but firm. “And your father lived in a world where he killed innocent people, Megumi. Including that girl.”
The words hit like thunder, and for a moment, the room was silent. Megumi’s jaw tightened, his eyes flashing with a mix of pain and anger.
“That doesn’t mean that white-haired freak gets a free pass,” he said finally, his voice low.
“No, it doesn’t,” you agreed, your gaze unwavering. “But it also doesn’t mean you get to project your anger onto me.”
“They’re dangerous,” he hissed, taking another step forward. “Especially him.”
You tilted your head, your gaze steady. “Gojo? He seems harmless enough when he’s not shoving sweets into his mouth.”
Megumi’s fists clenched at his sides. “Harmless? He killed my father.”
You flinched at the reminder, guilt creeping into your chest.
Megumi’s hands flexed at his sides; he calmed down his breathing immediately, eyes softening. “You don’t get it,” he said, his voice rough. “I can’t lose you too.”
“You’re not going to lose me,” you said gently, placing a hand on his arm.
He stiffened at the contact, his gaze dropping to your hand before meeting your eyes. For a moment, his anger seemed to waver, replaced by something raw and vulnerable.
“I can’t protect you if you won’t listen to me,” he said, his tone quieter now but no less intense.
“You’ve always protected me, Gumi,” you said softly. “But I need you to trust me too.”
He let out a heavy sigh, running a hand through his hair. “You’re impossible.”
“And you’re overbearing,” you replied with a small smile.
After another tense moment, Megumi’s posture relaxed slightly. He looked around the room one last time, his eyes lingering on the remnants of the desserts you’d shared with Gojo and Nanami.
“They’re idiots,” he muttered.
You chuckled. “Agreed.”
“I’m increasing security around your building,” he said, his tone leaving no room for argument.
You rolled your eyes but didn’t protest. “Fine. But only if I still get to pet your shikigamis.”
His lips twitched, the faintest hint of a smile breaking through his frustration. “Deal.”
“Next time, call me first.”
“Noted.”
"Come, mom asked you to stay over for the weekend; let’s go.” He said, extending his arm with a faint twitch of a smile on his lips.
“Oh great. I haven’t seen her in a few weeks.” You followed him.
Before closing the door, Megumi looked directly at a particular window in your penthouse.
//
As you both left, the tension in the room finally eased.
From the shadows outside, Gojo and Nanami peeked around the corner, their expressions a mix of curiosity and disbelief.
“He’s scary,” Gojo whispered in Japanese.
“He knew we were here; he could have fought.” Nanami thought out loud.
Gojo then added sagely. “But also... she’s kind of hot?”
Nanami sighed.
“Do you think she’s single?” Gojo mused as Nanami dragged him away.

Many Years Ago
It was a warm afternoon, the kind where the sunlight filtered through the trees and painted the grass in dappled patterns. You sat on a park bench, your knees pulled to your chest as you tried to block out the world. The faint sound of children laughing reached your ears, but it felt distant, like it belonged to another reality.
“Hey.”
The voice was small, hesitant. You looked up to see a little boy with dark, spiky hair and eyes that seemed far too knowing for someone his age.
“You’re sitting here alone,” he said matter-of-factly, his head tilting slightly. “Why?”
You hesitated, unsure how to respond. “I just... like the quiet.”
The boy frowned, his brows knitting together. “You’re sad.”
Before you could deny it, another voice interrupted. “Megumi, don’t bother strangers.”
You looked up to see a tall man approaching, his broad shoulders and confident stride impossible to miss. His piercing eyes softened slightly when they landed on you.
“Sorry about him,” the man said, ruffling the boy’s hair. “He’s too nosy for his own good.”
“It’s okay,” you said quietly.
The man studied you for a moment, his gaze lingering on the bruises peeking out from beneath your sleeves. His expression darkened, but his tone remained calm. “Where are your parents?”
“They’re around,” you said quietly, looking away.
The boy—Megumi—plopped down on the bench beside you, completely unfazed. “You don’t like them, do you?”
“Megumi,” the man said warningly, but you shook your head.
“It’s fine,” you murmured. “He’s right. I don’t. They wanted a boy; I came out a girl.”
The man’s fists tightened hard enough that you heard a faint crack, then he crouched down, his gaze level with yours. “Listen, kid,” he said, his voice low but firm. “You don’t have to stay in places that hurt you. You know that, right?”
Your throat tightened, and you nodded, tears stinging your eyes.
From that day on, Toji Fushiguro became a constant in your life. He didn’t say much, but he showed up when it mattered—bringing food, letting you crash on his couch when things got too rough at home, and always making sure you knew you had someone in your corner.
Megumi tagged along wherever you went and was always watching out for you in his quiet, observant way. His sharp wit and occasional bursts of kindness became a source of unexpected comfort.
You felt a sense of belonging, a family forged through shared struggles and unspoken bonds. But when you learned of Toji’s death, the loss hit you hard. It was a wound that ran deep, leaving a lasting impact on Megumi, who never truly recovered from it.
And when you cut contact with your family after a particularly horrible night at eighteen, Megumi’s mom helped you get on your feet, offering support until you could stand on your own.
For a while, it felt like you’d found a family.

Before you left to get married
This was supposed to be a moment of excitement—a new chapter—but instead, it was tainted by the look in Megumi’s eyes.
The terminal was too bright, too sterile. Every sound—footsteps, muffled announcements, the scrape of luggage wheels—echoed like a dull ache in your head. You stood by the departure gate, clutching your boarding pass, trying to steady your breathing. You had said goodbye to Megumi’s mom, but Megumi had disappeared since the day you told him you’d accepted the proposal to get married to your husbands. He didn’t pick up calls, didn’t respond to texts, and wasn’t at his office or at home. You wanted to say goodbye before you left, make amends so that he visited you for both your and his life's major occasions, or without reasons. You didn’t go out of your way to hurt him, but you hated yourself for it. He was right to have expected something of you when all those years ago his father had been nothing but kind towards you.
Then the storm came.
“Leaving just like that?”
The voice froze you in place, laced with a hurt you hadn’t anticipated. Turning slowly, you met Megumi’s gaze. His 20-something frame was taller, broader like his father, than the boy you’d met all those years ago—a sharp-edged man you’d always known he’d become. He looked disheveled, as if he had been drinking; his coat and tie were absent, his sleeves rolled up, and a few top buttons of his shirt were undone. But his eyes... his eyes still held the same piercing clarity, now clouded with betrayal.
You swallowed hard. “Megumi—”
“Don’t.” His voice cut through the distance between you, and you flinched. “Don’t start with excuses.”
“I’m not making excuses,” you said softly. “I’m doing what I have to do.”
"What do you have to do?” He laughed bitterly, running a hand through his spiky hair. “You’re leaving everything—everyone—for them. You’re marrying the man who killed my father. And the other one, who just stood by and let it all happen.”
The words hit harder than you’d expected, slicing through the fragile composure you’d been clinging to. “That’s not fair,” you tried, your voice trembling. “You know it’s not that simple.” You stepped towards him.
“Then what is it like?” he snapped, stepping away. “Because from where I’m standing, it looks like you’ve chosen them over everything else. Over me. I thought you were better than this. I thought you cared about me.”
“You’re my best friend, Megumi. You always will be,” you insisted, your throat tightening. “I do care about you.”
“Do you? You are moving to a whole other country for them! Do you even know the language properly?” His voice cracked, and for a moment, he looked like the boy you’d met in the park all those years ago.
Tears welled in your eyes. “I’m not leaving you, Megumi.”
“Yes, you are.” His tone was flat now, his expression hardening like a wall slamming shut. “You’ve already made your choice, and it’s not me.”
“I’m not doing this to hurt you,” you said, your voice barely audible.
He scoffed, the hurt radiating off him in waves. “Doesn’t feel like it.” He sighed, looking away from you, and continued, “You’ve made your choice, and it’s not me. So, go ahead. Leave. But don’t expect me to be waiting when you come back. The next time I see you, it’ll be at your funeral.”
The words hit you like a punch to the gut. Tears pricked your eyes, but you forced yourself to stay composed. “I’m sorry you feel that way,” you said quietly. “But I hope one day you’ll be able to forgive me.”
He turned away sharply, his shoulders tense. “Don’t count on it.”
The words hung in the air, heavy and final. You opened your mouth to respond, but nothing came out. He strode away without a backward glance.
You stood there, the sounds of the terminal fading into a dull hum, your heart splintering under the weight of his parting words.
Nanami came to you and held you close while Gojo took care of the luggage.
---
Present day
The sea stretched endlessly before you, the waves lapping softly against the shore under the dim light of a waning moon. You sat on the edge of the wooden dock, legs dangling over the side, your hands resting limply in your lap. The salt in the air clung to your skin, but you barely noticed. Your eyes, glassy and unfocused, stared at the horizon, seeing nothing but the fractured pieces of a life that had slipped through your fingers.
The memory of Megumi’s words cut through the silence, a cruel echo of a bond you thought unbreakable.
"The next time I see you, it’ll be at your funeral."
You swallowed hard, the phantom weight of those words pressing against your chest. You’d believed so fiercely that he’d understand one day at the time and shared history would bridge the chasm your choices had created.
But you were wrong. He was right.
Your fingers tightened into fists as the guilt churned inside you. He had tried to warn you and begged you to stay away from the men who had dismantled your life piece by piece. And yet, you had brushed him off, convinced of your own strength and autonomy. You had taken his trust, his family’s kindness, and burned it in the fires of your hubris.
When your HQ in Japan was nearly razed and your life reduced to ashes, it wasn’t the men who betrayed you that haunted your thoughts—it was Megumi. You had been too ashamed to call him yourself, delegating the task to an employee with shaking hands. Yet, despite everything, he had come through.
His company’s security solutions had locked down your global offices in a matter of hours, protecting millions of lives. He didn’t ask for thanks, didn’t even reach out to you directly. It was as though he’d swept in like a ghost, solving the problem before vanishing back into the shadows of your shared past.
And still, you couldn’t bring yourself to reach out. What could you say? That he’d been right all along? That you missed him? That the absence of his sarcastic remarks and overprotective nature felt like a gaping hole in your already fractured soul?
You wondered if he thought about you at all. Did he have friends now? Or had he become like you—an isolated workaholic, buried under the weight of responsibility and regret?
Behind you, Sukuna sat silently on the dock, leaning back on his palms. He hadn’t said much since dragging you here, content to let the waves and the stars speak for themselves. He was steady, an immovable force in your crumbling world.
Sukuna sighed, his fingers drumming against the wood. “Still thinking about them?”
Them. Your twins. The children you’d lost.
“They are still yours,” he had told you, the words a faint echo now, lost in the cavern of your grief. They didn’t heal you, but they lingered, a reminder that some part of you had existed in them, however fleetingly.
The nightmares came every night. You didn’t tell Sukuna, but you didn’t need to. He was always there when you woke up drenched in sweat. His strong arms would pull you close, his voice steady and grounding.
“They’re gone,” he would say, the words harsh but real. “They’re not coming back. I’ll kill them if they do.”
You never asked who he meant. You didn’t care.
The therapy sessions were supposed to help. Sukuna drove you to every appointment, his presence looming in the background like a silent guardian. He never asked you how they went, never pressed for details. He just waited, scrolling through his phone or staring out the window until you returned.
But the numbness refused to leave. It clung to you like a second skin. You hadn’t spoken to Sukuna in months, not really. Your words had dwindled into hollow gestures—a nod, a faint smile, a muttered “thanks.”
He never complained. He just stayed.
Now, sitting on the dock with the sea stretching endlessly before you, Sukuna shifted closer. His knee brushed yours, a subtle reminder of his presence.
“You ever gonna talk again?” He asked, his tone light but probing.
Your lips parted, but no words came. You couldn’t bring yourself to speak, to admit that you missed someone else’s presence just as much as his.
Megumi’s face flashed in your mind—his eyes, his cutting words, the way he always seemed to know what you needed before you did.
Sukuna’s gaze flicked to you, his eyes narrowing slightly. “Who’s on your mind?”
You turned your head slightly, meeting his gaze for the first time in hours. “No one,” you lied, your voice hoarse from disuse.
He didn’t push, but the slight tightening of his jaw told you he didn’t believe you.
The stars above reflected faintly in the dark water, their light distant and cold. You wondered if Megumi ever looked at the stars and thought of you, or if you were as distant to him now as they were to the earth.
A/N: And that’s the emotional rollercoaster for today, folks! 🎢 How did you guys feel about Megumi and the airport scene. Drop your votes, share your feels, and get ready for the next chapter—it’s gonna be sending y'all to therapy.

2006
“Let's go!” During football season, Jimmy and Jey Uso could shout beyond words after finishing classes, always excited to support the team.
Your roommate Naomi almost sprinted down this hall while donning her cheer uniform, ready to leave. Other students welcomed excitement.
“See you soon, Nay!” You grinned while laughing as this shuttle pulled up and sent her group to the field once more.
_____
Almost growing up together, you first met Naomi after falling on the playground. Ever since that unexpected day moved forward, she would offer genuine kindness and still wanted to help you.
By high school graduation, both of you had earned well-deserved scholarships and remained inseparable as personal dreams kept shining.
Watching your sister rave up front, you followed every single routine by this point in time and chanted along, showing pride no matter what.
Just before halftime would take place, you glanced down and realized that Naomi chatted with one player.
The gridlock helmet lined up for school protected his face, but dark hair curled behind that large jersey. Your own questions picked up right away.
When this player stepped from Naomi and removed the helmet for a break, his side profile expressed an absolutely flawless grin.
Your heart flew beyond the sky located overhead when Naomi laughed with him and echoed happiness that you've known since childhood.
Did my best friend have an unexpected crush out here? Joyful thoughts wondered.
Sooner than later, Naomi turned and waved to you, offering the biggest smile. Sounds heightened, but you recognized movements of her lips.
‘We'll talk later.’ Naomi pointed between you and herself, winking before she walked back to formation alongside the vibrant cheer squad.
What's going on? You questioned this moment silently.
*****
Spooning ice cream from its carton after taking this shower, Naomi crashed on your bed in the dorm and started rambling with homework done.
“Are you two going on a date?” You laughed while enjoying your own treats and quietly mentioned the football player.
“No, girl! You know I'm in love with Jim.” Naomi gushed over Jimmy Uso for quite a while now.
“Oh! Your future husband?” You messed with Naomi this time.
“Of course! That's my man.” Her smile didn't even fade. “But let me tell you what happened on the field.”
“I'm listening.” You trashed garbage and returned to bed, invested while Naomi continued.
“His name is Roman and he's moved here from Florida.” Naomi painted details. “I guess his parents worked magic with school and now he's joined the football team.”
“That's cool. At least we won.” You say, definitely intrigued. “He's handsome.”
“Girl! I even told him about you.” Naomi almost giggled.
No! Both ears heated through embarrassment and you covered your mouth, surprised.
“Playing matchmaker again?” You quickly sighed out loud.
“No, but give Roman a chance someday.” Naomi settled down. “He's really sweet. If things don't work out though, I'll be here.”
“Deal.” Trusting her words, you took steps at your own pace.
******
“Big Dog!” Students cheered when Roman entered this classroom and tried to sit down for an upcoming lecture. The professor hadn't arrived yet.
“Alright. Hey, ya'll!” His Southern accent met true laughter as Roman topped sunglasses near dark hair and began to organize various essentials.
When this professor could start teaching as usual, Roman's mind drifted elsewhere.
Last weekend, Naomi yapped from the sidelines and gave Roman this much-needed chance to smile as fall weather chilled down every bone.
Soon, Naomi pointed toward the known bleachers and somehow mentioned her roommate, just chatting further until halftime would kick off.
Curious during the lecture, Roman “snuck” his phone beneath this long table and opened text messages, reaching out.
Roman: Who's your roommate? 👀
Shooting that question, Roman quickly glanced around and tucked this phone right back into place, ending his last class of the afternoon.
_____
Greeting Naomi and Jim as he reached the dining hall, Roman noticed someone else holding this meal and walking over, not sitting down just yet.
“Roman?” Naomi introduced both of you. “This is the roommate that l told you about. She's my best friend.”
Good God! You're so pretty. While seeing you up close, Roman's mind shook up.
“Hi.” You spoke first and quickly offered the most beautiful smile.
“Hey.” Pulling himself together, it's a miracle when Roman's muscled knees haven't given out. Your sweet voice doesn't help quiet nerves either.
Here we go.
_____
Sitting down as a group, small talk would carry dinner right now, but Roman can't help watching how you laugh by Jim and Naomi. This adorable sound would echo beyond his dreams tonight.
When the building closed until morning and everyone moved down this sidewalk together, Roman stayed aware of you, genuinely protective.
Moonlight welcomed another evening as dorms turned closer and closer.
“See y'all tomorrow. No class.” Jimmy topped one of his favorite hats while standing near this dorm.
“Don't be stupid. I'm right here.” Roman warned about fooling with Naomi in public, but you rolled both eyes and laughed again, distracting him.
“Bye!” Almost running away, Jim held Naomi's hand and headed somewhere, leaving you outdoors.
“Wait, Jim!” Roman scoffed and felt awkward as you stood nearby.
“They've always been wild, so I'm used to it.” You tried to help Roman out.
“We didn't talk much. Wanna go inside? It's cold out here.” Roman pointed to your building.
“Sure.” You met him by the entrance, but Roman opened that front door, leading through.
_______
Warming up by some miracle, heat circulated this lobby once you both sat down.
Peaceful silence gave Roman an opportunity to learn more details with each passing moment.
Just when you exchanged phone numbers and Ro would leave, thunder rumbled outside.
Damn. He thinks. I'm probably stuck until further notice.
Meanwhile, you texted Naomi several warnings just in case and even hoped Jim would circle back.
Other students dispersed from the lobby, gifting Roman more time with you as silence would start to pull between those incoming raindrops.
“Jimmy will pick you up in a little while.” You offered an update for Roman to be careful.
“Thanks.” Ro accepted your words and charged his phone here.
“You're welcome.” You ended this conversation and waited, just keeping your distance now.
******
When the truck arrived, Naomi dashed to this building and shivered with chills.
“I'm taking a shower.” Nay spoke by you and ignored Roman before heading to the elevator.
“Stay warm.” Facing Roman, you gathered essentials and moved in the same direction as Naomi.
“You too.” His accent won't drawl this time, but roots still lingered when Roman turned out the door.
*****
“How'd it go?” Jimmy returned to his apartment on campus and gathered snacks, questioning Roman about you.
“Not much happened.” Roman wouldn't even push boundaries.
“Hold up.” Jim scrunched up his face. “You didn't even ask her out?”
“Uh-uh.” Ro took one water bottle out of the fridge. “Now you're being a dumbass!”
“Man!”Jimmy tisked right back. “Naomi and I started dating before you even got here. What's wrong? Make a move.”
“Creeps don't win.” Roman defended himself. “I'm not scaring this girl just to make myself feel better.”
“Good point, Uce.” Jimmy dapped up Roman while grounding one of countless nicknames.
“Don't worry about me.” Ro chuckled and headed to the living room, settled at last.
******
Roman: Coming to the game? 🏈
You: Can't! I'm sick. 🤧
For the first time since exchanging your number, Roman pouted.
Dark weather lasted this week, but possible ailments reached out of nowhere and your status nearly bothered his own motivation for that game.
Roman: Feel better. 🫂
You: Thank you and I'll try. Give ‘em hell! 🏈🔥
Roman: Yes, Ma'am! 🫡💨
Your last ping jolted energy right back and Roman snatched this helmet, ready for war.
This time around, as long as you stood in the corner, he would move mountains.
______
Another downpour began to soak this football field when the team prevailed again and sheltered in that locker room. Thankful cheers resounded.
By the time Roman gathered his cell phone afterward, notifications pinged throughout.
Naomi ended up taking charge for once and warned that you'd fallen asleep during halftime, pretty much knocked out with this terrible cold.
Roman: Damn! Y'all need anything? 🥺
Naomi: No thanks! I stocked warm meals in the fridge and we have plenty of medicine. 🫂
Roman: All right, but still let me know. 🥺
Naomi: Got it! 💚
*****
Dodging outright medical attention, your cold settled down at last, but homework remained and you caught up after missing classes to recover.
Huddled in the library, you cornered textbooks and kept studying this afternoon, but one voice caught intrigue.
“Feeling better?” Roman's Southern accent pulled forward as usual.
“Yes. Thanks.” You addressed him without making eye contact and still jotted down notes.
“Missed you at the game.” Roman attempted once more.
“Y'all won again. Didn't skip much.” You clipped the response while trying to finish assignments.
“Sorry. Call me later?” Roman noticed the drop of your sweet voice and knew better, planning to leave you alone.
“Maybe another time.” You're exhausted as he distracts you.
“Okay, baby girl.” Roman offers this unexpected nickname and you almost freeze, surprised.
That slip never eased your thoughts when his voice deepened and curls then reached both temples. Subtle facial hair welcomed his jawline.
“Ro? Don't do that.” You turned away from the desk and gathered belongings, reaching limits now.
“What?” Almost towering beyond height, his weight anchored 280 pounds based on current stats with the football team. Your breath hitched.
“We're in public…” You tried. Shadows of his face locked down your presence without hesitation.
“I know.” His brown eyes struck and you nearly break, wanting to kiss an absolute stranger. “We need to talk, though. C'mon.”
Influenced by an unknown force, you trailed his steps and exit the library regardless.
______
Speaking in the lobby of your dorm that night, you have no other choice with Roman.
“Why care so much? You and I just met.” You folded both arms.
“Maybe I looked forward to seeing you at the game and colds aren't good.” Roman squinted, taking up this couch. “I shouldn't be concerned?”
“I appreciate it, but you don't need me standing every day for touchdowns.” Your words kept going, frustrated. “What do you want?”
“You.” Leaving the couch, Roman stood once more.
“Why? Riding with the football team isn't enough anymore?” You arched one brow. “Naomi told me that girls keep following.”
“Those girls don't even care. Matter of fact, you messed me up.” Roman tried to explain himself without yelling.
“How?” You questioned, just waiting to hear more and more.
“It took five seconds.” Roman lifted his dominant hand. “I'd rather think about you now.”
“I'm not that special. Goodbye, Roman.” Heading to your room, you leave him in the dust.
*******
Completing this group project, you exit your final class of the day and planned to hang out with Naomi, but Roman caught your steps in the hall.
“Hello.” You stayed cordial for so many reasons this afternoon.
“Hey. Who was that?” Despite his greeting, Roman brought up one of your classmates.
“Doesn't matter. We aced the assignment.” You briefly smiled.
“Ignoring me now?” Ro asked.
“I have plans with Naomi. Excuse me.” You turned away and Roman sighed, missing another chance.
_____
Heading out for dinner, Naomi chose this amazing restaurant and chatted all night with you, grateful to have free time during the hectic semester.
Taking dessert home, you giggled holding containers and walked down this hall with Naomi, but she paused when her cell phone rang.
“Roman?” Naomi questioned this man on the other line.
You squinted, definitely puzzled while entering the small home area with Naomi.
“Put her on the phone…” Exhaustion pained his voice when Roman looked for you.
_______
Taking Nay’s phone, you closed this bedroom door, giving Roman privacy.
“What's wrong?” You asked.
“I'm sorry for what happened.” Roman apologized. “How was your night? I miss you.”
“Thank you for apologizing, but don't start playing cute. I'm still mad.” You say.
“That makes sense, but I…” Roman struggled because of you, smitten and yet frustrated.
“I'll hang up. What's going on, Roman?” You put your foot down.
“I can't sleep, baby.” He slipped that nickname again and missed you in real time.
“Ro…” You hung up and returned this phone to Naomi, not calling Roman back.

Interview: Kate Clover, "Bleed Your Heart Out"
Kate Clover before getting on stage at Festi'Cheyres through my Olympus Trip.
Kate Clover played Switzerland for the first time last year in Bulle. Sadly, I missed their show because I was away. I was therefore very happy to hear that she would be back with her band, this time at Festi'Cheyres in Cheyres, and then in Zurich! I wrote Kate Clover beforehand and she kindly agreed to do an interview with me before her show.
Join us as we talk about Kate Clover's life in Los Angeles, her album Eat Your Heart Out, her western/John Waters like aesthetic, and more. Many thanks to Kate and the team at Festi'Cheyres for making this possible!
To get to know you more, I would like to know what your life is like when you are not touring.
Kate Clover: When I am not touring, I run a sunglasses label. I have a cat and a husband, so we have our morning together. And then I just work on either music or the sunglass label. I jog and try to stay active. If there’s a show we go to a show, or if we’re Djing we do that. Always too busy !
I’ve seen on Instagram that you also make clothes.
I do ! I like to make a lot of my stage outfits and it’s fun ! I wish I had more time to do it because if I start something I get very invested in it. I have to learn to save my energy for what I need to get done. Now I do it more for relaxation. It’s more of a hobby.
Kate Clover killing it at Festi'Cheyres through my Nikon.
Speaking of clothes, I’ve noticed the influence of John Waters. It's also present in your music videos. Was it intentional from the beginning or did it come naturally ?
It’s naturally ! I’ve always gravitated towards retro-looking things – I mean, I dressed like that in high school. I’ve actually found John Waters’ movies when I was in high school and I couldn’t believe how similar our aesthetics were ! It was honestly like a cosmic coincidence. That’s a big compliment when people say that to me, because it’s always been my aesthetic. I think that certain things visually appeal to me – look at the way the B52’s looked ! They looked amazing and it’s the same aesthetic ! So I feel like if you understand that aesthetic, it’s in your heart.
Let’s talk about your album Bleed Your Heart Out ! I read that you recorded it in Mexico. You were born and raised in Los Angeles, so I wanted to know if compared to your first EP, it was necessary to step out of the city to reflect more this time?
I think that people sometimes need to think about that more when they make something. When you’re in your everyday life, you’re in your everyday thoughts. I wanted to escape that. Sometimes, when you leave your normal life, you’ve already prescribed the outcome for your day: this is what I do, this is how I live, these are my friends.
When you put yourself in a new situation where everything is new and different, I think you’re going to pick up different signals. You’re going to be inspired by different things. Ultimately, you’re going to make something more unique. For me, that worked. I don’t know if it works for everybody, but I encourage people to try that. You’ll be surprised at how much freedom you’ll find in just being more anonymous in your perception of yourself in your daily life. That really allowed myself to be open and willing to take more chances.
After Festi'Cheyres, Kate Clover and her band played a little bar in Zurich called Safari. They killed it again. Here's a photo shot with my Nikon!
I really like the album cover because it reminds me of those ‘Wanted’ posters in Western movies. At the very end of the album, in the song Follow My Heart, you can also hear those influences right ?
I’ve always been attracted to the Western aesthetic. I love Spaghetti Western movies. I grew up riding horses and I like country music a lot. There’s a romanticized country artist in me who likes to express myself through that in a way. I also like the kitschiness of it. I think outlaw culture is very rock and roll.
Could we talk about the song Channel Zero ? It’s my favorite from the album. Do you remember how it was born ?
Honestly, I was stuck at a stoplight and all the lyrics just came to me. I’ve benn writing enough music to know that when that happens, you just have to stop what you’re doing and write it. So I was stopped at a stop light, drove home, wrote the chorus, wrote the verse and it fit. I used stranged words that I never used in a song before, like the word ‘file’. When would I ever use that ? (laughs) It’s one of those songs that I almost feel like I can’t take credit because it just happened. The creative force was there.
youtube
If you had to drink one thing for the rest of your life, what would you choose between red wine and tomato juice?
I’ll go with tomato juice because I feel with red wine I would just be drunk all the time. I don’t know if I would want that.
What can we expect from Kate Clover in the future ?
I’m going to be touring a lot and release my second record sometime next year.

5 Digital Marketing Trends To Watch Out For In 2023
Digital marketing is complex and has many ever evolving elements – Search Engine Optimzation (SEO), social media, marketing automation, search engine marketing, and more. New technologies, techniques, and unstatic algorithms keep your digital marketing teams on their toes, even ours. Here are 5 digital marketing trends that you must consider adopting in 2023 for your business:
1. Search Engine Optimization (SEO):
What is SEO: Search engine optimization (SEO) is the process of increasing the quality and quantity of online traffic. Search engine’s priority has always been quality content, which has augmented the importance of SEO. The result of a successful SEO is to get your website on the front pages of the search engines like Google,Yahoo and Bing. Search Engine Optimization (SEO) makes you “be found” as opposed to “finding people” for the products & services you offer.
Why does website need SEO?
SEO will help people find your website. Therefore, SEO Isn’t Icing On The Cake – It’s An Important Ingredient.
SEO can make your brand stronger, better and well recognized which builds trust and credibility.
Customers often do their research online before making a purchase. If your website offers what the customer is looking for, chances are he may visit your website to make the purchase.
Every strategy of your SEO campaign can be measured, evaluated and corrected.
2. Influencer Marketing:
Influencer marketing is as good as a celebrity endorsement, which is far more convincing and engaging to your target audience. By tapping influential people on the internet, you’re able to reach their audience with a voice that they trust. You must identify the most apt influencer who reaches your target demographics directly. Brands that are leveraging influencers to spread their message are experiencing nearly 10x rise in conversion rate and we definitely recommend you to invest some time here.
3. Artificial Intelligence:
Computer science defines Artificial Intelligence (AI) as a device or an algorithm that perceives its environment and takes actions that maximize its chance of successfully achieving its goals. In the 21st century, AI techniques have experienced advances in computer power, large amounts of data, and theoretical understanding, making it an essential part of the technology industry. AI is currently used across various sectors like health, automotives, finance and audit, gaming and Advertising. Let’s look at some Advertising AI tools you must consider integrating in your digital marketing Plan.
Voice search: Half of the world is going to shift to vocal search for their needs by 2020 so you better start working on it today, to bear the fruits later.
Data Analytics: Predicting the behaviour of the buyer has never been so easy. It can predict your sales which will help you generate a return on your investments.
AI Chatbots: Customer is really treated like a king with the integration of an AI chatbot which is an automated tool that gives the impression of talking to an actual customer service person in real time.
4. Augmented Reality (AR):
Augmented reality (AR) is a type of interactive, reality-based display environment that takes the capabilities of computer-generated display, sound, text and effects to enhance the user’s real-world experience. It uses the existing environment and adds information to it, making a new artificial environment that will stun you.
Why Get Going With AI?
Ultimate engagement tool: AR uses immersive tools which allow you to engage with your customers at a different level all together. They can test out what paint colour suits your wall (Asian Paints), try on a spectacles or sunglasses (Lenskart), or place IKEA furniture in your home before you buy it.
Making experiences more meaningful: Followers of AR are geared up to elevate the consumer experience in new ways, just by bridging digital interactions with physical spaces.
Customer’s attention span expanded: Average attention span of a human being according to google study has reduced from 12 seconds in 2000 to 8 seconds in 2018. With AR, it’s high interactivity and engagement tools, it has proved to hold your customers attention for more than a minute. Vallah! it’s like getting a new life in your favourite game.
Branding for the long run: Half of your target audience is going to interact with the AR system. Some may enjoy the experience and just share it around their circle and may not convert, nevertheless, they are doing the Branding for you. On the other hand, some of your probable customers are overwhelmed with this AR experience and finally a purchase is done. Being the talk of the town builds your brand value which will increase your conversions in the long run.
Digital and physical environments will merge making AR the primary digital marketing tool to beat your competitors. Whether your business is related to selling products online or a physical retail store, your digital marketing strategy needs to include this technology.
5. Content and Infographics:
A new digital marketing wave has been describing the convergence of info-graphics & Content Marketing. Today, these two industries have become inseparable that yield wonderful results. Use great content to maximize traffic to your website and use captivating infographics to keep the visitors engaged, resulting into conversions.
What worked in 2018, may not work in 2023. Things are getting outdated sooner than before. Technology is more refined and with innovations like machine learning and artificial intelligence are evolving faster and better! If you find it difficult to keep up with these digital marketing trends, we are a digital marketing agency catering to all your digital marketing needs. At iDigitize, we take pride in being among the most innovative and trendy digital marketing agencies in Mumbai.

so people are super invested in who the nonrich kids are for all the rich school teams from this post so like. let’s get it i guess!!
seijoh: y'all already know!!! fucking yahaba shigeru!!! it's why he's got such an attitude about things!! he's a middle child AND he's sick of the rich kids' bullshit!! like idk i feel like on the first day of school a lot of yahaba's classmates think he's like them bc he seems so ~shallow~ and ~preppy~ but then he instigates violence within the first ten minutes of class (WITH A GOOD JUSTIFIABLE REASON) and everyone is like "what the fuck".
(i have my thoughts about kyoutani being a nonrich kid too bc like. i do love them being the nonrich power couple of seijoh who are just so ready to FIGHT anyone who talks shit otherwise but also??? kyoutani coming from a rich stuffy family?? that punk ass?? that'd be HILARIOUS)
shiratorizawa: SHIRABU SHIRABU SHIRABU. unlike yahaba he makes his disgust known loud and proud. every time a rich kid tries to come for him he's like "absolutely the fuck not" and RIPS them apart so bad not even all their money could pay for enough therapy sessions to fix the damage. he knows goshiki means well but goddamn does he want to bop that kid on the head sometimes. (i also like the idea of shirabu and kawanishi bonding over being the nonrich kids but also??? kawanishi being like SUPER weird BC he grew up wealthy and exasperated but fond shirabu??? i LOVE that shit)
fukurodani: tbh. i really really like konoha as the nonrich kid for fukurodani. like "mr. jack-of-all-trades" yeah of fucking course he seems like he can do every single little thing compared to everyone who just. HIRES people to do shit for them or buy whatever they need. konoha knows how to use duct tape in a hundred different ways while his classmates are just like. tossing easily fixable headphones and sunglasses out every time they break and buying new ones every single time. (also. yes this follows the snarky nonrich kid and weird rich kid. konoaka my beloved.)
itachiyama: look i know we only have three of them BUT. the sheer HILARITY and the HONOR of it being the CAPTAIN, iizuna tsukasa??? i think both sakusa and komori are rich and being cousins they get into the weirdest most trivial spats that iizuna has to sort out. like sakusa is yelling at komori bc "YOU SPILLED CAPRISUN ON MY BALENCIAGA" and komori is all "THEY WERE UGLY ANYWAYS JUST BUY A NEW PAIR" and iizuna is like. "wtf. guys. like honestly fuck the both of you we have PRACTICE right now come ON"
inarizaki: SUNA. IT HAS TO BE SUNA. kid who came all the way across the prefecture to an elite school where he doesn't know anyone or anything? a school where presumably most of the rich students have known each for YEARS bc they went to the adjacent middle school together? yeah there's going to be SO much bullshit when suna gets to inarizaki and hjsgbdkhd it makes me hurt just THINKING about it. like okay yeah all of these types of schools are ruthless but suna is such an easy target because he really doesn't have anyone here y'know?? (that's a lie, of course. he has the team. and that's enough.)
kamomedai: i didn't cover them in the og post but like. kamomedai is DEFINITELY rich. like. how the fuck else do you nab someone who coached pro to teach a bunch of high school kids??? and keeping in mind with what we already know of hoshiumi and hirugami . . . i'd really like for it to be hakuba LMAO. like, we know he isn'tas good and just started playing in high school, so there's probably a roadblock somewhere that makes him feel like he isn't catching up to the others as fast as he'd like, but really he just never had the resources they always had bc of their money!! i'd also really like liam to be one of the nonrich kids too, bc then he and hakuba would have some cute senior-junior bonding moments
mujinazaka: usuri. no explanation needed.
#tbh i don't have a lot of solid evidence on mujinazaka being rich or not#i just thought it would be a HILARIOUS addition#and i mean#it would def explain why usuri is SUCH a nasty piece of work#god okay let's tag#yahaba shigeru#kyoutani kentarou#kyouhaba#shirabu kenjirou#kawanishi taichi#kawashira#konoha akinori#akaashi keiji#konoaka#iizuna tsukasa#sakusa kiyoomi#komori motoya#suna rintarou#hakuba gao#tokura liam#usuri michiru#haikyuu#haikyuu!!#haikyuu hcs#sou says stuff

I've been reading up on Duke and he's such a great character!!
On CiM, I thought it'd be fun to speculate about some potential character interactions and reactions. To repeat, this is speculation going from by brain cinema! I don't expect you to use these! I just think it's fun and wanted to share them.
Duke and Sam. Duke is smart, he's a riddle dork, he got deeply invested in puzzles as a child when Riddler controlled Gotham. I imagine he saw the recording later after his section in chapter 5 and appreciates how Sam kicked Riddler's ass. They get into a competition who knows more riddles.
Duke could discover a pivotal clue or make a pivotal connection to the DP characters because of the same reason. He's so good at finding at finding all the tiny bits and making sense of them for the bigger picture.
Duke and Spirit Robin, because Duke started / led the We Are Robin movement. He recognized Robin as a symbol of hope - and Spirit Robin I think is glowing because the concept of Robin gives hope - and made it into a rallying symbol for other teenagers to work together and help Gotham. So there could be a special connection. Because Duke is THE Signal.
Duke and Team Phantom. I feel he'd be one of their most vocal and important partners in helping Gotham beyond redirecting the supervillains energy to constructive / safer avenues. He knows Gotham. "So, I've heard you want to help the city? Here's what you need to know, what to do, and how to do it."
From @gothamandamity .
ooooohhh yeah. I have honestly been sleeping on Duke a bit on account of not knowing much about him but I do have plans on Duke and Sam being pals because their vibes feel compatible to me XD
God, now I'm thinking of Duke, Steph, and Sam forming a coalition to give the Riddler the ultimate headache since it's canon (at least to me) that Steph is ALSO a riddle master (and that The Batman would have been over in 30 minutes if she were there XD).
Sometime in the future:
Bruce: "The Riddler is causing trouble again."
Duke: "Oh no. Anyway, I'll get the girls."
Bruce: "Wha--"
Steph and Sam appearing out of the ether with sunglasses and bludgeoning weapons: "Don't worry Mr. Bat. We got this one."
The Riddler *in his lair*: "Why do I hear boss music..?"
I honestly know very little about the We Are Robin (bum ba dum ba bum bum bum) movement but I do really like the idea that Spirit!Robin has a special fondness for those who took up the mantle during that conflict. I don't think they would be a part of Spirit!Robin's manifestation or whatever, but I do think they'd have bolstered him and protected him from a force that wanted to see him snuffed out. So they have the glowing bean's favor :3
(On an unrelated note, I imagine that during the Robin Wars, Spirit!Batman was extra prickly and scary because those owl jerks were messing with his son.)
Duke honestly might be the Bat that I can envision hanging out with Team Phantom the most on account of him (in CiM at least) being their age and also the most normal Bat who is also completely bonkers (like...his bio-dad is some secret evil god or smt? he can glimpse into the future and control the full spectrum of light and also shadow for some reason? my boy is op and I love him. He and Danny are both eldritch in different ways. Danny is like Cthulu-adjacent while Duke leans more biblically-accurrate-"be not afraid"-angel-adjacent and I love that for them).
#void answers#change in management#danny phantom#dc#dc x dp#duke thomas#thank you for the ask gothamandamity <3#i adore duke ^-^#he hasnt had much presence in CiM yet but the fic is young and i have more that 20 chapters outlined :3#and so far the fic is over 100 pages and im not even in double digit chapters yet

recently rediscovered your blog and read the fic from your dad spy au where scout starts out as the "guard" and then becomes scout from there and lemme tell you that shit put me on some s-tier brainrot. like a cranial decay type beat.
i had a concept in my head that instead of being hired as a guard, he could have been hired as a right hand man to the administrator like pauling, because i think hed be awesome in that position. like imagine having a personal merc who can get in fast and out even faster. but maybe he would stay in the base like the rest of them, sort of like a secret on call intel gatherer, who also maybe sometimes has to dig a couple graves. and also like, nobody on the team expects anything from him at first because its this 20 year old newbie kid. hes dressed in his formal clothes and he talks like somebody from relatively around boston but not quite. i can just imagine one day he comes back during a team dinner with his shirt half untucked and stained with blood, hair disheveled as he asks soldier if he can borrow his shovel, or him debriefing them for a mission when miss pauling is busy. same vibe as the fic i mentioned before but scout gets to have a job as cool as miss paulings. honestly id write it myself if i didnt have the attention span of a fly
anyways your scout content gives me life thank you
scout teamfortress but 20% more competent standing next to miss pauling teamfortress while she's doing her job and doing like silly quips and otherwise contributing nothing like it's a buddy cop film is literally my fucking ideal
(warnings for some canon-typical violence)
-
“Oh, Pauling, it’s good to see you again,” greeted the chairman, smiling in an imitation of a grandfather and clasping her hands perhaps too-kindly considering she barely knew him. “Young as ever, and still so stylish, I see. And who’s the new fellow?”
“He’s just here to help with transport, Mr. Montgomery, nothing unusual,” Miss Pauling replied, returning his smile and adjusting her glasses. “Heavy cases, you know how it is.”
“Of course, I remember you almost toppling clean over last time we made a trade!” Montgomery agreed, frowning at the memory. “You’ll pull a muscle that way, better to be careful. It’s a pleasure to meet you, young man. And your name?”
“Mr. Normandy, sir,” the new kid replied easily enough despite his slight East Coast accent, giving the man a firm handshake, expression neutral and stony, the picture of professionalism. Internally, Pauling breathed a sigh of relief.
“Firm grip there, young man,” Montgomery praised, nodding approvingly. “Tennis player, perhaps? Or golf?”
“Baseball, sir,” he replied, still evenly. “First baseman.”
“Ah! Of course! Were you any good?” Montgomery joked.
“At everything but playing in front of the crowds, otherwise I’d be in the major leagues,” he replied, tilting his head just slightly to imply that he was joking, his sunglasses glinting at the movement, and Montgomery barked a laugh.
“I like this one, Miss Pauling!” Montgomery said, and Pauling just barely caught herself from physically relaxing at it.
“We do too, Mr. Montgomery,” she agreed. “I was under the impression that you’re very busy today, so we won’t keep you for too long, we just wanted to sort out the final details surrounding the manufacturing rights for the—“
“—Pacific Northwest branch, up into British Columbia and Alberta, of course,” Montgomery agreed, nodding faintly. “Of course, of course.” He turned to regard his own man in a dark suit, the one standing to the right, who appeared to be unsuccessfully trying to stare down Normandy, who was completely ignoring him. “My briefcase, please.”
The man handed over the briefcase, and Montgomery put it on his desk, opening it and pulling out a sheaf of papers. “All our requests are submitted and approved, at this point we just had a few dustbins to take care of regarding initial percentages and making sure everything is wired to the correct accounts, which names are undisclosed, things like that,” Pauling explained as he glanced through the papers.
“Right, right, everything looks good here,” the man murmured, nodding to himself, sending his long-white hair just ever-so-slightly out of place. “I’m assuming these more sensitive documents should be sent some way besides through the mail?”
“If you finish them today I can take them with me, otherwise either me or Mr. Normandy can return to pick them up at your convenience,” she replied, to which Normandy gave a singular nod.
“Oh, it would only take me a short while,” Montgomery said, waving a hand. “We have a lovely lounge just down the hall from here if you’d prefer to wait there, it should only take me ten, fifteen minutes at most. In the meantime, I do believe there’s also the manner of payment for services rendered.”
Miss Pauling tilted her head just slightly to one side, confused.
“I arranged with Helen already,” Montgomery explained, not looking up from where he was initialing a few things. “The payment, rather than being wired, she asked to be made in material investment. A venture of mine from years ago that she’s willing to sit on. Rather than gold or bonds, she agreed to take some old currency of mine that my family collected, from early 18th century New Zealand and Australia. Monetarily it’s worth around the same, and I’m quite a bit attached to it to be entirely frank, but it was at her request to buy the whole collection from me, and after years of the work we’ve been doing together, well, I’d never trust it with anyone else.”
He gestured to the other man, the one on his left, who stepped forward to hand him a manila envelope, which he passed to Pauling.
“Inside is both keys, the door alarm codes, and all other security information for the building where the collection is being stored. They’ll ask for a few codes and confirmation of identity, only because several other art collections and artifacts are being stored there by other affluent individuals such as myself.”
“Thank you, Mr. Montgomery,” Pauling said, taking the envelope gratefully.
“Think nothing of it, my dear. Helen talked me into it all her own,” he said easily enough. “Now, gentlemen, if you would let Miss Pauling and Mr. Normandy into our lounge? I should have these wrapped up before any of us can even think about lunch, eh?”
One of the suits showed the two of them through the doors and down the hallway, through two doors bracketed by similar suits who simply nodded politely at Pauling and ticked their chins at Normandy as they passed them.
Normandy posted up beside the door for all of three seconds before they shut and Pauling pulled her glasses up, rubbing at the bridge of her nose and making a vaguely distressed noise. He then promptly relaxed, instead leaning his hip against an armchair probably worth the same amount as a small car. “So, uh, we’re glad that he’s giving us a bunch of commemorative coins from when dinosaurs still walked the earth?” he asked just below normal speaking volume, eyebrows raised.
“Yes. Very glad. Because unlike about six people total on the planet, he hasn’t figured out yet how valuable those are.”
“What, is a picture of a kangaroo on some copper really gonna make up for a couple hundred thousand American dollars?” Normandy asked, sounding doubtful.
“Not copper. Something else,” she replied. “I can’t tell you much more about it other than that, but these coins are made of something priceless to us. And to the Administrator.”
“…Love? Memories? The magic of family?” he joked, cracking a smile, and she rolled her eyes, moving to open the envelope and start reading the papers inside. “Hey, uh, not to question whether my job should exist, but what the hell am I doing here, exactly? Besides carrying a briefcase. Like, chivalry isn’t dead but I really don’t think you need me carrying your bags and holding the door for you.”
“You’re helping with security, basically,” she replied, adjusting her glasses to squint at tiny handwriting about the collection. “Mr. Montgomery is trustworthy, but he mostly hires out to… well, people like us. His security detail is mostly people we’d rather have screened, freelancers, stuff like that. A lot of people we contract out to are like that. Most of them have heard about me and know better than to try and pull something, since I can hold my own pretty well, but if they haven’t, seeing a second person might persuade them to think it over again.”
“Oh, so I’m like, uh, when it says ‘tow zone’ next to the no parking signs even though nobody checks, or when they’ve got a camera in the corner of the store that isn’t even plugged into anything,” he said, and the looked up at him, confused. “Like, uh, what’s the word… I’m a casual deterrent.”
“Sure,” she said, because it sounded like he knew what he was talking about, shuffling the papers back away and closing the envelope again, making a note to ask the Administrator if she should change their current containment procedures to be closer to Mr. Montgomery’s. “Just… if there’s a fight, you deal with it, otherwise you just stand there and look like you’re paying attention.”
“That’s what the sunglasses are for,” he agreed. “I was blinking morse code at the guy across from me literally the whole time.”
“You know morse code?” Pauling asked, surprised.
“Just the alphabet, ‘S.O.S.’, and ‘ass’.”
She rolled her eyes again, and that’s when the door opened.
She expected Mr. Montgomery, not one of the men in suits. “Excuse me, both of you, if you don’t mind,”the man said, accent having the slightest English tilt to it, a Londoner if Pauling had to guess. “You’re Miss Pauling, the Mann Co. affiliate, yes?”
“That’s me,” she agreed, hesitant, and glanced at Normandy.
“I’m afraid there’s been a mistake. Mr. Montgomery have you the wrong envelope on accident,” the man said apologetically, extending a hand forward. “We apologize for this unfortunate mix-up, it’s really quite embarrassing, but those documents are sensitive and we’ll be needing to see them back now.”
Pauling looked at him, and within a moment, shifted her expression. “Oh, I’m so sorry!” she agreed, nodding. “No, right, of course. These aren’t the papers for the currency collection?”
“I’m afraid not,” the Brit agreed, head tilting just slightly, hand still extended, moving a fraction further forward.
“Well, thank goodness we figured out now and not with us halfway back,” she joked, and moved to hold the folder closer to her body. “I’ll take this right back to Mr. Montgomery, then.”
“He’s sent me to correct the error,” the man explained simply.
“Right,” she said, and saw in her periphery that Normandy had already started sneaking a hand in towards his primary, clearly having pieced together something she was only suspecting. “We can bring this to his office, then, right down the hall.”
“You misunderstand,” the man said, taking a step forward again. “I’ll be taking it to his office myself.”
“That’s funny,” Pauling said. “I didn’t realize you had clearance to be in there. Or to be carrying a semi-automatic instead of a standard handgun.”
The Brit reached for the semi-automatic, and before he could even get it out properly, Normandy hit one clean shot to the side of his head and another to his thigh, sending him crumpling to the ground.
Pauling had only as far as pulling her own handgun free, thumb on the safety, and breathed a sigh of relief, glancing over at Normandy, shifting to more comfortably hold her gun. “Quick reflexes,” she noted.
“Just noticed a lot sooner, maybe,” he shrugged, stepping forward to glance over the body, tucking his gun back away.
“What was your hint?”
“He’s here to give us the right folder, yeah? Well, why were his hands empty, then?”
She was just starting to nod and realize that as well when a second man shouldered through the door, holding a gun at the ready. Normandy scrambled to draw his own, but Pauling fired a shot into his knee, shoulder, and neck to send him dropping before he was even close. “There’s quick on the draw, and then there’s prepared,” she said pointedly. “Gotta think of if there’s more than one, new guy.”
He nodded, and drew his gun again, bending to hit the guy on the ground at the temple hard enough to knock him out if he wasn’t unconscious already. He then glanced up at the sound of a shout from the other side of the door, two men shouldering through, guns drawn but lowered. It was only the firm eye contact they made with both her and Normandy that made her pause the millisecond it took to realize these ones weren’t trying to kill them.
“Pauling, what on earth is going on here?!” Montgomery demanded, entering the room and staring with wide eyes at the bodies on the ground. “What could’ve possessed you to—“
“He was trying to run off with these documents,” she explained quickly, gesturing with the envelope. “He knew whatever was in here was valuable.”
“He drew his gun, sir,” Normandy added, tipping his head down towards the body, and Pauling glanced down as well and found herself a little surprised. He’d rearranged the man just slightly, apparently, adjusting the arm to be holding the gun a bit further outward. “Other one was aiming to kill.”
“My, my,” Montgomery tsk’d, shaking his head as he surveyed the scene. “What a mess. My apologies, Miss Pauling, Mr. Normandy.”
“It’s alright, but you need to start doing more thorough checks on your staff, Mr. Montgomery,” Pauling stressed.
“He’s only been here two weeks, sir, he was one of the men we hired in a hurry after the incident last month,” one of the bodyguards said, and Montgomery shook his head.
“Thank goodness nobody was hurt,” he sighed. “Mutiny, and besides that, they’re bleeding on my carpet. Here are those papers, Miss Pauling—what a day, eh?”
“It’s really alright, we handled it,” Pauling assured him, giving her bravest smile, a little exasperated now.
“Right, right, you and the first baseman,” he agreed, and Normandy fought back an actual smile.
“If you’d like, we can take care of those for you,” Pauling said, gesturing at the bodies. “To pay you back for the carpet and the scare.”
“Sounds fair to me,” Montgomery agreed, clearly relieved.
-
“My dad’s gonna be pissed, by the way,” Normandy was so helpful as to say on the way back up the path to the base. “And you’re fielding that.”
“About the suit, or the fight?” she asked, glancing at his clothes where he was somewhat covered in a fine dusting of mud and grime from the gravedigging, shovel still in his free hand.
“Both. Mostly the fight. Your fault for saying it’d be an easy one to start with,” he said.
“If it was going to be that much of a problem, you wouldn’t have gotten this job. I’d just have made you go do dishes all day or something,” Pauling replied.
“Point taken,” he said, walking ahead to get the door, holding it open for her. “Wait, we’re allowed to mention what we do, right? Just not names?”
“Or locations, even with travel distance. Round up to the hour if it comes up,” she replied.
“Sure, sure,” he agreed, trailing a step behind her as she led the way through the base.
In the common area, there was a bit of a ruckus happening. Soldier, Heavy, and Demo appeared to be having some kind of arm wrestling competition on a rapidly-toppling table, the Engineer was on a stepstool trying to fix the ceiling fan, and Sniper appeared to be half-watching the beginnings of an argument between Pyro and the Spy regarding use of the oven as Medic patched up a burn on his arm.
“Hullo,” Sniper greeted the two of them, sounding a little bored, Medic giving them a brief, polite nod. Normandy’s eyebrows were raised pretty far as he surveyed the room.
“Hi, Sniper,” she greeted in return, then cleared her throat, raised her voice. “Team meeting in five minutes! New mission for next week!”
Groans from the room at large, the eight mercenaries starting to finish up what they were doing and filing out. Spy moved over, glancing over Normandy and starting to talk to him in rapid-fire French, picking smaller bits of gravel off of his suit as they walked.
“Alright,” she addressed the room, Normandy peeling off from getting mother hen’d by Spy to stand next to the blackboard with her. “Monday, you’re all going on a transport mission. Getting the truck from point A to point B with everything in the boxes intact. Already we’ve had to put up with some people trying to get ahold of these things, so bring your guns.”
“Oh, our guns, you said? Lads, this is a serious one, keep your heads on a feckin' swivel, she’s sayin’ we might even need guns, can you believe it?” Demo faux-gasped, and chuckled when Spy bopped him on the arm, rolling his eyes at the Scot's theatrics.
“Yeah, yeah,” she waved off, flipping through the papers a bit. “So Engie, I’ll need the keys to the truck, me and Normandy are going to be loading those tomorrow, all of you need to be at this drop point bright and early.”
“How early?” Heavy rumbled.
“Six. Hour and a half of drive from here.”
Some complaints from the room that she sighed at.
“Hey, hey, calm the hell down,” Normandy cut in, and she glanced over at him where he had his arms crossed and a stern look on his face. “You chuckleheads get to have all eight of you to unload the damn thing, me and Miss P gotta do all the rest of this on our own and probably kill twenty guys on the way there and back. She had to be up at 6 AM, workin’ since 7 AM, lunch break at noon and nothin’ else, and we just got back now at, what, fuckin’, 10, 11 PM? Any of you work her shift and then see if you even got the energy to complain about wakin’ up early, how about that?”
The room went utterly devoid of complaint or backsass. “Thank you, Normandy,” she said politely, and he just nodded once, glancing off to the side. “Anyways, anything new on this end? Spy, how are you adjusting?”
“Very well,” he said simply. “I have nothing pressing to say. Once I’ve been updated from the stock weaponry provided here to my requested preferred weaponry, I believe I should do just fine.”
“I see you already have Herr Normandy digging graves,” Medic chimed in. “Straight into the hard labor, ja?”
“Eh, hey, y’know, it’s why they keep us young people around,” he shrugged, grinning, and there was a brief uproar to drown out Medic’s entirely offended scoffing and Spy’s snort-laughing.
“Get ‘im, lad!” Demo cheered, and Normandy indeed looked fairly proud of himself.
“Monday, transport mission,” Pauling noted over the noise, writing it up on the chalkboard to hide her own smile from the room. “Normandy, you and me are doing the boxes tomorrow. Everyone on the same page? Good. Dismissed. Oh, and Pyro—stop taking the fire alarms down when they beep. They’re beeping because you light things on fire in the base. Do that outside.”
“Oh, hey, uh, helmet guy, All-American Beef,” Normandy called, and Soldier straightened up. “Here’s your shovel back. Gettin’ my own tomorrow.”
Soldier walked directly over to him, clasping a hand on his shoulder. “That’s a high honor, Cadet,” he said, tone grave. “Do not take this responsibility lightly.”
“I, uh, I won’t?” he said hesitantly, and blinked a few times as the shovel was carefully taken from him before it was promptly marched from the room in double-time. Only then did Normandy look over at her. “So he’s always like that?”
“You’ll get used to it,” she assured, dusting chalk from her hands. “You should get to sleep soon, we have to be up early.”
“Sure thing, Miss P.”

RE: JUNGKOOK CHANGED IN RUN
Anon:
Why did Jungkook not want to be on Jimin's team in the last run episode? He has changed a lot from before. Thoughts.
My first thought is, you don't gotta interpret everything in a negative light.
Not every strong reaction is a bad reaction.
I'd be a phony ass fraud if I sat here and told you with my two thumbs that I didn't raise a brow at that moment. I did.
Especially when you contrast that episode with run 112 which falls on all fours with this current situation- ok may not all fours.
But in that video, like many others, RM had suggested they form teams based on the sunglasses they wore, just as he had suggested they form teams based on the seating arrangements.
Of course he'd meant it as a Joke just as we discussed in a previous blog post. Personally, I expected they make a draw, rock papers or even dance in circles like they did in the other episode to decide who got who in the competition.
But it seems in all the times he's been paired with JM he's been supper thrilled about it. He even warned the members not to underestimate him and JM when they'd unanimously concluded they were the disadvantaged team in the game- Jin not even bothering to ask them what their scores were on Korean.
He reset the timer to 10 seconds when Jk pointed out he wasn't good at reading fast
When the time stopped and they were asked to make a team of four, he turned to find JM almost immediately as if to make sure JM was part of the four, he held on to his arm to prevent RM from breaking the link.
He was supposed to pair with Yoongi and Jimin with Tae but he didn't even try to find Suga. At least V did try to find Jimin. He moved towards JM and when he realized JK was hugging him he went for Suga.
Throughout the episode he was giving JM tips on how to cheat and shot when he wasn't sure of the answers.
Yet in the last run, he didn't seem as enthusiastic about being paired with JM- or so, he'd have us believe. Smirk.
He ain't slick. Lol.
To me he seemed, on the surface of it, either really salty about the others having Jin or RM on their teams or upon reflection, just plain ass overcompensating for something.
I'd go with the later.
It's similar to how, Jimin got the Sauna card and he'd complained about not liking the Sauna but then swapped cards with Tae so he could be on JM's team.
Or how he'd make a theatrical show of wanting to win a competition but smirk satisfactorily to himself when he loses.
I really don't think it's a big deal.
Personally, I love watching them paired up and doing such activities. It's a great way to see how they work together as partners and as a team.
It's also a great way for them to spend time with eachother, enjoy eachother, nurture their bond and strengthen their relationship.
Fanservice or not, scripted or not, you cannot deny that spending time together doing activities together is good for building a relationship.
They spend a considerable about of time together off cameras but a lot of their time is spent on cameras and at work.
They gotta find a way to make their relationship work on the work as I keep saying. All that 'fanservice' people say they are doing? That's them making it work. They gotta find a way to go on dates, feed eachother, hold each other's hands, tell Jokes, laugh at eachother's jokes, express their attraction for each other, flirt, share eachother's interests and do things couples do without inviting public scrutiny to their every interaction and invasion of their privacy.
So where they see an opportunity they go for it. For JK it's the the little decisions he makes on their behalf like choosing where they will sleep, what activities they can do together, wanting the bigger room, making sure JM wins the presidential suite, or choosing a room detached from the other rooms.
He invests in his relationship the best way he can. Same goes for Jimin.
I keep saying this whole fanservice culture is a win win situation for them- for even any queer idol couple in the same band.
What seem like a challenge could technically be an opportunity for a date for them without dispatch breathing down their necks.
A typical example would be this. Jimin said he wanted to go get Yoga with the others but ended up going with YoonKook on their brewery excursion.
The more time they spend together, on and off cameras the more closer they get and the more they get to know eachother on a deeper level.
But you have to bare in mind, they need their personal spaces too in order for their relationship to function properly.
Jimin used can be very needy in his relationship but for the most part he enjoys his independence too.
Jk has always had a strong sense of independence but he can equally be quote needy and over attached once he is in a relationship- especially when things are going great for him.
Spending time apart, persuing personal goals and interest is good for them.
If it helps, think of moments when they hang around eachother as Jikook dates and when they hang quietly in the background of videos do think of those as them having their me times at work...
Would they miss an opportunity to 'date' or hang privately with eachother? I don't think so.
It's in their dicks interests and the interest of whole production team and crew to allow them to be around eachother as often and as much as they want and can.
I for one, I'm not prepared to sit through yet another excruciating episode of Jungkook wanting Jimin- physically and emotionally. I'm still dealing with the PTSD from the last BonV four episodes.
Y'all buy me Ko-fi please. I don't intend to sit through that shit sober.
If Jk is pushing to be on JM's team and what not it's mostly because he feels he needs to spend more time with him. If he's not pushing for that it just means he or they are both allowing for space and room in their relationship for eachother to pursue other activities and interests or even connect with other members- unless of course they are having relationship problems which I don't think is the case.
Jimin is particularly good at this.
He goes out of his way to nurture his relationship with the others even on set.
He does this especially with Tae.
He'd take Tae to go see places he and JK had already been to, he'd request to take pirate rides with Tae- even though JK is available and won't hesitate to let him know, he often make plans involving Tae or even the others- in Soop when Tae asked him to go ride around the town with him he chose to stay and manspread on Jin and Yoongi. *I'm cackling. Lmho.
Jimin is a funny guy.
Now does this mean he doesn't like spending time with Tae or that he's changed? Hell no.
Hell, Tae does the same thing from time to time too. I mean when he found out he had picked a Sauna card he asked to swap it knowing very well Jimin had picked that card too. Soulmates coulda soulmated that shit in hot piles of steamy.
Sure JK lurks around sometimes. He is the resident intruder stepping on Jimin's other ships' neck. Love him for this. Lol.
Perfect Disney villian.
Tae had to drag his ass away from the kitchen for intruding when he and JM were cooking in the Kitchen. Let's not talk about him physically removing him from JM's car or all the times he's complained about JK raining on his Vmin agenda.
When V wanted to be on a team with JM this man literally sabotaged him, hugging Jimin first. It's his laughter afterwards for me. Lmho.
V needs to insure his Jimin cos at this point it's trademark infringement. Hashtag soulmates. Lololol.
Jk needs to go ahead and free Vmin.
But JM does this too, in much more subtle ways- I'll never forget the look he had on his face when he had to get off the bus and walk home as punishment. It was the most heart breaking thing I ever seen.
Then he had to hang off Hobi to get JK to leave his friends and come to him.
It's why I used an ellipsis the last time I talked about Jimin being very mature now. Old Jimin would have, clapped back, made JK pay for that outburst if he genuinely thought JK meant what he said or believed JK really wanted to be on a team with someone else.
Y'all don't see him when JK compliments other people? He stays kicking his feet under the table🤣🤣🤣🤣
I used to pinch a gurl I liked when other gals talked to her when I was little- In my defense, I didn't even know I liked her or that it was straight up abuse💀
Jimin can be pretty scary and petty when he's mad or offended.
If it helps you sleep at might, think of this moment as just another one of those 'we've been a unit for so long do you wanna be with someone else now' scene from February last year.
Jk answered yes when JM asked him that. But do you really think he meant it?
Jikook is complex, not complicated.
They love eachother.
We can't be looking at their interactions as either or. Grey areas exist and it's not a negative thing.
Signed,
GOLDY

I rate your pnat ships by how well they work as foils
I’m Professor Pops, welcome to Literature 405: comparing and contrasting in pnat ships. Love is in the air but all that really matters is narrative symmetry!
Mina and Agent Day (submitted by @anxanhh)
two women on missions who need a confidante.
Mina is a calculating woman of science with a tender, vulnerable heart deep down that she guards. Day is a fun, giggly love goddess but beneath the surface she is just as calculating.
They are both focused on their prospective goals to the point of subterfuge.
They have similar missions, to solve the many mysteries of Mayview, but they’re at odds instead of working together. Will these lone wolves learn to let their walls down and work towards a common goal?
Their spectral energies are complementary colors!!!!!!!!!!!!
9/10 so different yet so alike. They should kiss and also develop as people.
Spendcia
Where's that post about paranatural having what my hero academia wants?
These two had interacted in cannon only once before we found out they were dating, power move on Zack’s part
The cousinhood and the consortium seem to have bad blood…. Enemies to lovers????
As teachers, Garcia is tired and phoning it in while spender is energetic and committed. But when it comes to mystery solving Spender is burning himself out while Garcia keeps him grounded.
Garcia does things like pack spender lunches with little hearts drawn on the bag but was surprised to be called his boyfriend. He acts chill but inside he is deeply invested in spender but also knows about spender’s isolating tendencies.
8/10 there's a reason these two have been off and on again for 6ish years, they’re walking a tightrope of vulnerability.
Imaax (submitted by Rubyya)
The Destiel of Paranatural. No I will not elaborate.
Here’s a pnat history lesson, the original ship name was Maxaac, but Zack weighed in on twitter with a much better alternative: Imaax. Also sometimes called Team Lightning Rod.
Black and blue colors, just like the emotional bruises they leave on the people around them.
Isaac wants to be seen as heroic and Max wants to be seen as aloof. It presents in different ways but deep down they both really care what other people think.
They both fear sincerity. Isaac protects himself with theatrics and Max with sarcasm.
Isaac puts on a big show of having strong ethics but he’s a little mean on instinct. Max puts on a big show of cutting people down with his snark and devil-may-care attitude, but when push comes to shove he’s kind and cares how other people feel.
Max immediately insults every person he meets and they still want to be best friends with him, while Issac tries so hard to be cool and nice but people just can’t stand him.
The meta tension between Isaac, who wants so badly to be the protagonist, and Max “magnetic personally” Puckett who is exhausted with being the protagonist, is delicious.
There’s a reason official art tends to portray them together. They bring out the best in each other. Isaac brakes through Max’s performative pessimism and Max brings Isaac down to earth.
10/10 these two were written as a pair and it shows.
Suzabel (submitted by Rubyya)
One of my fav tropes is ‘enemies to friends’ where the enemy part is completely one-sided. Isabel probably thinks she and Suzy get along great.
Both the heads of their respective clubs, but with very different leadership styles.
Isabel only studies her grandfather's spectral style to please him and is a near master of it, while Suzy is incredibly self-motivated even though her actual skills are lacking.
Isabel is at a crucial time in her life where she’s learning to distance herself from adult authority figures in order to take on more personal responsibility. Suzy is already blazing with independence and could help her adjust.
Inversely, Isabel could teach Suzy a thing or two about treating your club members with respect and doing the emotional labor necessary to prevent future conflict.
Red and pink! Valentines colors!
Isabel could kill you but would never, Suzy would actually try to kill you.
Investigative reporter/person living mysterious double life is a great dynamic.
Back when Izzy had Eightfold they had the ship name ‘Paper Girls’ which is awesome
7/10 Don’t ask me how I know this but they would kill at karaoke together. And they’re ok foils.
Bullymagnet
Max ‘too cool for clubs’ vs a boy who defines himself by his tight knit group.
Max is learning to be less passive aggressive and johnny is learning to be less aggressive aggressive.
Max’s entry to spectral life was when he injured Johnny and saw a shade of a doctopi on him, and Johnny's first shade was Max's doctopi after the hit ball game.
Johnny refuses to commit to not bullying max anymore even though he really likes him, and max is working on being nicer but he’s still gonna be snarky with people even though they’re his friends. Old habits die hard.
If he hadn't seen that shade, Max might have joined Johnny's gang. He has the style, the stunts, the snark.
8/10 Just two bros whose lives are changing forever.
Isaac and Dimitri (submitted by Rubyya)
Here’s my pitch for a ship name: Brainstorm
Orange and blue are complementary colors.
Isaac hurt Dimitri accidentally somehow. Hurting others accidentally is the central theme of chapter 5.
Idealist/pragmatist is a classic dynamic
They both have relationships with their spirit partners that are rooted in fear.
Dimitri’s self concept is overly dependent on his sense of intellectual superiority, and Isaac’s on ethical superiority.
7/10 have not directly interacted in the comic yet but the narrative symmetry is there
Johnny and Isabel (submitted by Rubyya)
Burnhound Vs Shockadile
These two are natural leaders who know how to treat their friends with respect.
These jocks are both lethal weapons, but while Isabel is a master martial artist, Johnny is a passionate but blunt instrument.
They’re both going through similar identity crises.
Isabel is struggling to reconcile her violent and disciplined upbringing with a good, gentle heart and Johnny is trying to reconcile his violent and self-centered lifestyle with a developing respect and empathy for other people.
Johnny dies his hair red, so he would think it’s cool how Izzy emits a fiery red aura when excited.
8/10 there's a reason these two were the team leaders in the hit ball arch.
Violet and Lisa (submitted by Rubyya)
People have been theorizing about what kind of cryptid Lisa is since day one meanwhile Violet gives off big normie energy.
Lisa is very plugged into all the Mayview weirdness as the queen of the school underground, while Violet was the only person who thought to go get a teacher during the hit ball arch. Lisa was also the only one who really spoke openly about how something was clearly very wrong with Jeff, everyone else talked around it and played by the so called ‘rules’. Lisa’s secret brokering Vs. Violet’s ‘sunlight is the best disinfectant’ attitude presents two different approaches to trying to survive in a school run by a mysterious shadow organization within a town that contains several other mysterious shadow organizations.
“If you were, I’d have to be jealous too.” just two middle schoolers pinning over their crushes.
7/10 two girls against the world.
Isaac and Johnny
ship name: Firestorm?
Just 2 fiery redheaded mediums with anger management issues that command primal forces and wanna be best friends with max
Johnny chooses to have red spiky hair, Issac has had red spiky hair thrust upon him.
Both met Maxwell Pucket and decided they needed to change for the better.
I’ve said this before but Johnny and Issac have equal and opposite philosophies. Johnny doesn't care about the greater good, he just cares about a small group of people who he loves. Issac cares about the greater good, but can’t connect with individuals and ends up hurting them. Together they form one GoodTM boy.
Both their spirit partners want revenge on Spender. This spells trouble.
If there’s anyone to teach Isaac about unconditional friendship, it’s Johnny
Isaac has sworn off violence and Johnny worships at the altar of it.
9/10 they’ve only interacted in canon once so far but I’ve think we’ve got a big storm coming.
Suzy and Collin (submitted by Rubyya)
The Bakudeku of pnat. I will continue to not elaborate.
Suzy once stole Collin's phone which prompted Collin to try to cut her hair which prompted Suzy to stab Collin and at no point did either of them think to move to a different bus seat. As different as they are they are also very much the same.
Collin is the definition of mouth service (constantly disapproving of suzy’s antics but going along with it anyway.) while suzy is all action.
Despite their different attitudes they both seem genuinely passionate about the journalism club.
Fashion icons. Suzy’s sunglasses and legwarmers, Collins sweater vests and wrist bands, this duo could walk for Paris fashion week: middle school edition.
We’ve gotten an indication that Collin cares a lot about what Suzy thinks of him (taking off his wrist bands when she made fun of Max's) but we haven't gotten any sign yet that the feelings are mutual.
5/10 I think their story is yet to be told and we’ll get to know more about how they compare/contrast to each other in the future. Maybe brought on by Dimitri's betrayal?????
Cody and Isabel (Submitted by @a-bitchtm)
Cody is gay by WOG but that doesn't matter here since we are evaluating thematic compatibility, not romantic compatibility.
Red Vs. Blue
Izzy’s arch about stepping into her role as leader through communication and honesty contrasts Cody’s role as the secret class president. Izzy finally told Isaac the truth about the consortium, while Cody blatantly lied to max about being president.
Both seem to have generally good motivations and the skills/talent to back those motivations up.
Isabel is in the process of unlearning the ‘firm hand’ philosophy that she learned from her grandpa and Cody’s dad straight up tried to mind control him into murdering a toddler.
They were both taught to fall back on their capacity for violence and intimidation but those teachings conflict with the people they really want to be.
6/10 just two kids who are being led astray by authority figures trying to learn to be themselves.
Cody and Collin (Submitted by @gatortavern)
They both like vests.
Both beholden to blood thirsty predators
Collin is a journalist, Cody is a vampire/leader of the shadow government. It’s a huge power move on Cody’s part to hang out with Collin.
Cody’s support of his friends is enthusiastic while Collin would have you believe Suzy has kidnapped him.
4/10 they hang out for a reason but those reasons have yet to be fully developed
Isabel and Max (submitted by @Paranatural-goofiness)
They’re both people who have learned to put up walls to keep people out. Isabel through violence and intimidation, max through sarcasm and mockery. T
he other side of this is their mutual journey to let their walls down and connect with other people more genuinely, starting with each other.
Their search for acceptance and identity has led them both to become incredible athletes. Spectral fist martial arts = shred eagle stunts
As we saw in the hit ball game, Izzy faces things head on while Max is all about evasion. However we’ve seen how Izzy has actually learned to be evasive and guarded about her feelings while Max is a little more forthcoming.
8/10 Never has there been faster friends.
Isaac and Cody (submitted by Rubyya)
Drama kings
Isaac wants the likability Cody has.
Parallels of power: Isaac with power he didn't choose and cant control vs. Cody who also didn’t choose to have his power (elected), but wields it like an instrument.
Involuntary anime hair and involuntary glowing monster eyes
These two definitely both fall under the category of “lawful”.
I can see these two ending up on opposite sides of a conflict because they both have such rigid personal codes and an intense sense of duty.
I know I’ve been approaching almost all of these platonically but Isaac probably really wants a cool vampire boyfriend deep down
7/10 Unstoppable force, meet immovable object. You two should watch anime together.
Hijack and PJ (submitted by @gatortavern)
They both wanna join the activity club so bad
Both have immature ideas about heroism and villainy.
Both aspire to heroism while at the same time understanding that they aren't that yet and maybe never will be.
They both, like many people in this comic, wanna be friends with max.
5/10 Two supernatural babies who should play wii sports together
Stephen and Isaac (@Gatortavern)
Two boys who are easily overwhelmed
Lawful vs. chaotic
Isaac has enough secrets to give Stephen his conspiracy fix for a long time.
In their own ways they both just want everything out in the open.
Isaac is Stephen's dream, someone actually living a secret double life, and Stephen is Issac's dream, someone with a cool scar who would think he’s actually very interesting.
5/10 these two are both very intense in their own way.
Johnny and Ed (Submitted by @theevilbrainman)
Two souls lost in the wind
Two people for whom friendship and loyalty is central to their character, and they’re both struggling with personal growth because of it. Johnny is afraid to change because his friends have always liked the person he already is, and Ed is struggling to even define himself outside of Isabel, the person he cares about the most.
Both impulsive and uninhibited.
They both live lives free from expectation. Johnny’s wild bully persona means no one is surprised by his antics or cruelty, while Grandpa Guerra doesn't really care if Ed takes up phantom fist like Isabel. He actually calls him a freeloader. Not having much expected of you can feel free but it’s also lonely and can warp your self-perception.
6/10 these two crossed paths at exactly the right time.
I didn't cover every submission because even though only 9 people submitted you sent in 34 ships between you. Pnat’s fanbase is small but very dedicated.
Honorable mentions:
Johnny and clear sinuses, submitted by @gaul-the-unmitigated
Isaac and therapy, submitted by both @squidgeons and @somethingfishysgoingon
PJ and Johnny, submitted by @gatortavern, who seems to be under the impression that Johnny Would protect PJ and not destroy him just by breathing near him.
Day and Scabs, submitted by @gatortavern, because funny.
Special thanks to everyone who sent in ship between people who have never interacted in cannon, which was a lot of you. My eyes are opened now, so many possibilities.

Shielded From The Truth
Cross posted on A03: https://archiveofourown.org/works/30441042 -.-.-.-.- Warnings: Mild wounds. Number two in the phic phight! When his parents put a shield up around Casper high to keep the ghosts out, and it means that Danny’s day hardly goes to plan. And he was so close to being on time for once too…. PHIC PHIGHT 2021 For team ghost! -.-.-.-.-.- Prompt by: Silverwing013 Danny's parents have kindly offered to set up a ghost shield generator for Casper High. Hijinks ensue as Danny attempts to handle the situation.
-.-.-.-.-.-
Danny groaned as he only half listened to his parents rattle off whatever ghost nonsense they were going on about as he ate his breakfast. A bowl of dry cereal because the milk was contaminated and he really didn’t want to chance it giving him more than a stomach ache. This had become the norm this week it seemed as his parents seemed invested more than usual into the ghost shields that they had been working on and improving.
Why only shields? They would be installing one in the school soon… but beyond that? He wasn’t sure. They probably told him, sure, but being a teenager and one that had parents that hated half of him, had the effect of making him only lightly listen to the weapons and things that were meant to fully kill him off. That and at least the ghost shields weren’t usually a hindrance to him, in fact, they had proven themselves useful on a few occasions.
Plus he had the added advantage of being able to simply return to his human form and slip through the shield with little issue. Given his parents had no knowledge of half ghosts existing, at least he hoped not, they shouldn’t be designing a ghost and human shield. After all, that would defeat the purpose, right? It wasn’t as if Amity really had any human threats anymore.
Well, regardless of the eccentricities of his parents he could at least take some comfort in the fact that Skulker couldn’t simply attack the school to get to him any longer.
Small mercies he supposed.
Danny blinked as his father said something to him before slapping him on his back causing the teen to practically choke on his cereal from the force of the smack. “Isn’t that just great Dann-o?” the large man exclaimed happily before looking at his son expectantly. Oh great, he wanted him to ask something? Great.
“S-Sure” Danny choked out as he flailed, grabbing in front of him for the orange juice he had nabbed from the fridge, it thankfully hadn’t been in there long enough to start glowing… yet…
He shook his head as he finally got his breath back without inhaling dry cereal pieces into his lungs. When he was sure he wasn’t going to sound like some dollar store squeaky toy he tried to ask his parents a question, always a dreadful time if he were honest, but hey, he would usually be late for school anyway.
“So this will go around the whole school?” Danny tried weakly.
“Yep! And the best part is it’ll sense where there's an evil ectoplasmic entity nearby and spring up instantly! We made sure there won’t be a ghost within Twenty feet of the school before that puppy jumps up to the rescue! Like a big Fenton airbag!” Jack exclaimed all too enthusiastically for what the current time in the AM should allow a normal person to exhume.
Danny hummed noncommittally and sent a glance of ‘help me’ to his sister, who, in turn, rolled her eyes at her little brother. “And the shield even uses the ghost’s power to run the shield right?” Jazz asked side eyeing her father from her own spot not wanting to fully engage in the conversation they were having.
“Oh, yea! That’s the best part!” Jack practically cheered out.
“And the stronger the evil skum is the faster the shield will react and sooner it will be picked up. It will only go off on a level three or higher.” Maddie explained with a pleasant smile as she sips at her coffee.
“And we got it all finished last night to be ready for you kids today” Jack added happily.
“Hooray, more fun on a Monday” Danny sighed out into his last bites of cereal. Jazz snorted but didn’t comment, though Danny blew her a childish raspberry.
Jack continued to go on about the more intricate details of the shield they had put up though only one thing really caught his attention in the spiel, “-And Vladdie helped with the funding to outfit the school! Even helped us get the materials we needed to make such a large shield!”
“Ah, there it is…” Danny groaned letting his head fall forward onto the table in instant defeat.
“Danny! I really wish you would learn not to stay up so late playing video games! Look at you! If I get another call from one of your teachers about you sleeping in class-” Maddie started only for Danny to cut her off jumping to his feet.
“Yep! Thanks for that, mom! Look at the time! Love you bye!” Danny prattled off quick as could be before grabbing his book bag by his feet and bolting like a scared rabbit. After all, if his mother never finished that sentence when he inevitably fell asleep he couldn’t be grounded… she never officially gave him the last warning…
That’ll work, right?
It wasn’t long when he was out of the house that he was at his usual waiting spot for Sam and Tucker. Unsurprisingly, Sam got there first though they didn't have to wait long for Tucker to lumber forward, half asleep to his friends, and together they made their way towards the school as a unit.
Things seemed well enough until he got onto the stairs leading up to the main doors. That was when all hell broke loose. A deep alarm sounded before his father’s voice rang out from the speakers, in his over the top cheery way that only Jack Fenton knew how to pull off.
“Attention kids! Guess there’s an evil spook nearby so we’re deploying the shield! This ghost protection was brought to you by Fenton-works and sponsored by your mayor!”
Danny frowned. “My ghost sense didn’t go off…” He mentioned quietly to his friends.
“Maybe the shield sensors are more sensitive than you are?” Tucker asked with a frown.
“Since when?” Sam argued incredulously.
“Well who or whatever it is, it isn’t bothering me right now and no one’s screaming, no one’s panicking, so it can wait. I’m actually going to be on time for once!” Danny says waving the notion off.
He continues his trek up the stairs and towards the doors of the school, though when he reaches the threshold of the shield he finds himself having to really push hard against the thing. It was like hitting a wall of foam or Jell-O. He could push through if he pressed hard enough but it was not pleasant or as easy as going through the air.
Once through the initial shield wall, he blinked slowly feeling sluggish and as though all his limbs were moving through water. He even sort of felt like he was having to ‘swim’ as he walked like he was both heavier and lighter than he should be, but unable to find that buoyancy happy middle ground.
“Dude…” Tucker said smartly as he frowned at his friend’s almost slow motion, yet stop motion like movements. It was eerie, to say the least, not to mention the more pressing issue that he noticed right off the hop, “Your eyes are shining, man. And your, um… Neck...”
Sam, ever prepared for whatever bull their lives seem to throw their way, slipped her bag around to her front and offered Danny a pair of sunglasses, which the halfa put on promptly, along with the spider webbed patterned black and silver scarf. “I mean, it’s better,” Sam argued, not even giving Tucker's look of disapproval her full attention.
“They’re spider glasses.” The boy states with a shake of his head. “Not really digging the whole-” Tucker waved his arm about Danny’s head in little circles, “-pseudo goth thing” he finished finally. Though he had to admit it was at least marginally better than seeing his friend’s glowing eyes and the electric scars showing up on his neck and disappearing under his shirt collar.
“Better?” Danny asked out sluggish, his voice almost sounding like it was being drawn out on a tape deck that was starting to lack battery power and not playing at quite the proper speed making the pitch and timing slower and lower.
Sam and Tucker shared a look before offering a thumbs up to their friend, both deciding it better not to address… whatever that was… The look they shared between one another spoke of their mutual hope that this would perhaps be one of those problems that simply go away on its own.
Ignoring the problems they have usually makes it go away… Yeah, that always works out.
Danny makes a grab for the door to pull it open again, having that weird slow stop motion effect, like he was flickering between blinks rather than making a smooth motion forward. “Ehm, maybe don’t move around too much man… it’s um… creeping me out.” Tucker offers helpfully.
“Huh?” it took Danny a minute to process, as while he looked slow to them they seemed to be hyped up on caffeine to him… “Why are you talking so fast?” He wondered, his head almost appearing to glitch into a tilted and confused look.
“I think the ghost shield is making you go all slow motion. Just stop talking.” Sam says forcefully before letting out a shudder of her own.
Sam and Tucker share a glance before they each grab onto one of Danny’s arms and half drag him off to his locker. Despite his friends’ efforts he still got many looks shot his way, and a couple of people started whispering to one another as he passed by them.
“How is this going to work if I’m already weirding everyone out?” Danny asked, voice still sounding like a slowed record as he blinked sluggishly and his head jerked almost unsteadily from side to side. From his perspective, everyone was speeding along and talking at 1.5 times the normal speed.
“Maybe I should look for the ghost that triggered this, maybe Tuck, can you look into this mess?” Danny asked after a moment of trying to figure out what was being said around him through the noise of the hall.
“Yeah that might be best…” Sam responded shifting from leg to leg as she locks eyes with a basketball jock who was staring at their group incredulously.
“I got you, man, I’ll change everything to present and, block any ‘call home’ recommendations.” Tucker pipped up already pulling out his PDA to set that up preemptively.
Danny nodded and let out a hum before glitching his way out the nearest exit and out of the shield’s bounds. Once he slipped back out through the barrier, strangely enough, a harder feat than it was getting in, but that wasn’t a problem he wanted to focus on, he already blamed Vlad so he would simply continue to do so until the fruitloop showed himself.
As soon as he was through the green line of the shield Danny practically fell forward in relief. That stifling feeling now gone from his core and bones making his movements fluid and normal, well as normal as a clumsy half ghost could be anyhow…
It was a moot point and not one Danny wanted to think on too long. He gave a quick “thanks” to his friends, before diving between the dumpster and the school’s bricks, transforming into his ghostly alter ego and taking off into the sky. He would do a few laps around the school and city as he looks for whatever ghost set off the shield.
-BREAK-
It wasn’t until lunchtime Danny returned looking much more windswept and all around more miserable. He entered the courtyard through the side joining his friends out on the picnic table they had claimed. He made it over to them, flopped down on the bench next to tucker with a groan before his head smacked into the table before him.
“You find them?” Tucker asked around whatever horrid monstrosity of a sandwich he was eating, spewing bits of half chewed bred at Danny’s head.
“No” Came the muffled reply, filled with tired disdain.
“No ghost sense?” Sam wandered, flicking the bits of bread from Danny’s raven hair and back towards Tucker.
“No”
“Huh… You think it was you who set off the shield?” Sam wondered with a thoughtful frown.
“When I went into the back end of the generator though it wasn’t supposed to go off for anything that low, Danny in human form is like a two at best,” Tucker argued spinning his PDA around to show what he’d found when he hacked into the motherboard of the Fenton’s latest device.
Danny groaned. He supposed had he listened to his parents he could have been more prepared for whatever lunacy his parents’ decided to toss his way but alas, his short attention span and teenage rebellion and lack of caring got the best of him yet again.
Joyous of joys.
He tuned out his friend’s back and forthing for a bit, wondering if he could get away with smashing the device as Phantom when Tucker had his a-ha moment of discovery. Danny turned his head and raised a brow at his friend who was furiously typing away at his device.
“You were right about Vlad, Sam”
“Naturally,” She agreed.
“Well, he had an over right line here specifically set for Phantom’s ecto- signature,” the boy states running his finger along the line of code he’d found in the program.
Danny’s mood instantly brightened at that. “So then we just get rid of that bit right? And BAM everything’s fine?” He asked. “Man, what happened to me? Why do I want to get into the school again?”
“To keep up the illusion of normalcy on this mortal plane.” Sam supplied stabbing at her salad a little more forcefully than she probably needed to.
“Eh, yeah, I suppose.” Danny agreed with a lacklustre shrug.
“There, that should do it” Tucker spoke, interrupting whatever tangent Sam was getting ready to spew off about how normalcy was only an illusion created by corporations or some other such thing.
“And just in time The bell just rang,” Danny says with a small grin clasping a firm hand onto his friend’s shoulder. “Nice one Tucker!” he cheered as the trio made their way over to the doors that would lead them back into the cafeteria.
Unfortunately, as soon as Danny’s hand hit the door handle the shield once again sprung to life, though this time, instead of simply having a hard time passing through the shield, he was thrown back across the field earning a cry from several students who were following the trio.
“Grapes of wrath Mister Fenton!” Lancer, (of course it was Lancer) shouted out in worry, his shout even carrying over the prerecorded message containing his father’s voice. Lancer half jogged half waddled over to Danny who blinked up blearily to his teacher, eyes flashing green for the briefest of seconds before draining back to blue.
“Leave it to Fen-turd to get himself possessed.” Dash snorted from behind the pot bellied teacher earning a few nervous glances between the small crowd of gathering students. The mutterings of the students didn’t take long to start up after that.
“I’m not possessed,” Danny argued, though, it was rather hard to make said argument when the palm of his hand was burned and leaking ectoplasm from where he had touched the door.
“Course he’s not possessed! He’s a ghost himself!” Wes shouted pointing an accusatory finger at the youngest Fenton.
Danny glared. “Not the time Westly.” He muttered under his breath as he was hauled to his feet by his friends. He tried to brush himself off only to end up smearing the ectoplasm from his hand onto his jeans, leaving a luminescent streak across his thigh.
Seeing his chance the ginger jock was all too eager to point it out. “See look! He’s bleeding ectoplasm!”
“No, I’m not! It’s from the shield! it sputtered out at me.” Danny tried to protest, though even in his own ears it sounded like a weak argument.
“Really?” Wes argued and marched over to the shimmering shield. The teen waved his arms about freely in the shield’s range hopping back and forth pointedly across the line of the barrier before showing his hands and clothes were completely clean of any glowing goo. “See! Ghost!” he accused again after he did a little pirouette to show his lack of ectoplasm.
“Yeah? Well, it sputtered at Danny only ‘cuz it turned on with him in the threshold.” Sam tried to argue back glaring at the ginger, venom in her gaze.
“Well then, why don’t you just walk through the shield Fen-toad?” Dash said with a smarmy grin, ever eager to get his own jabs in and seemingly not wanting to be outshined by the ginger conspiracy theorist’s bullying of his favourite punching bag.
“Fine” He spat back bitterly and marched up to the shield with a huff.
Sam and Tucker exchange a glance with one another as Danny presses his hand into the shield again. Thankfully this time there wasn’t anything that blows him back but he also really had to try and push through the shield.
Danny could see out of the corner of his eye Wes’s smug grin as he grunts and does his best to push through the shield. His persistence is rewarded and he falls to the ground on the other side jumping up and giving a quick ‘HA!’ as he faces the small gathering crowd of students shifting uncomfortably just beyond the shield.
Sam had a look of exasperation and she looked like she was trying to restrain herself from face palming. Tucker on the other hand had no such restraint. He was almost over eager to bury his face into his hands.
From Danny’s perspective, he simply smacked into the ground and stood back up, but from the other students’ perspectives, Danny fell into the shield but instantly slowed down, looking as though he were falling with the moon’s gravity rather than the earthly speed everyone was used to. It also didn’t really look to them like he had hit the ground, instead glitching his body back into an upright position before cheering in that low slow motion state as he had earlier.
And if that wasn’t damning enough his eyes were glowing a lovely shade of ectoplasmic green.
Wes smirked, seemingly very smug and content with himself and this development. “See told you all he was a ghost!”
“T-that’s enough Mister Weston… Right…” LAncer muttered to himself a few moments watching as Danny seemed to glitch about as he cheered before seemingly realizing something was wrong. “I think there was a procedure to depossess a student…I bet the teachers in Bridgestone don’t have to exercise their students in this manner…” He complains. Sure they had gym class and he would appreciate the pun and irony if he wasn’t so tired.
“I don’t get paid enough for this,” he muttered, ignoring the look of panic that spread across Danny’s face.
It took some doing, a lot of flailing limbs and pressing himself against the damn shield, but Danny soon was through back out and free. His eyes still glowed brightly as he stared at his classmates looking very much like a deer in the headlights. Eyeshine and all might he add.
A few of the students were snickering, because only in Amity park could one get possessed by a ghost and have it come across as though someone had merely said something embarrassing or misheard an instruction and was now staring blankly ahead.
“Er….” Danny stared at his classmates half panicked before simply vanishing from view.
“Moby Dick!” Lancer exclaimed, almost dropping the book he was thumbing through from the Fenton parents. Sure it was a ghost, and could potentially be dangerous, but it wasn’t attacking so there wasn’t really anyone panicking.
Instead, the teacher simply felt tired. “Right, I’ll call the Fentons and let them deal with this, Everyone back inside I do believe the lunch bell rang already!” the teacher called out shooing the students into dispersing.
Danny stood there invisibly and holding strong as he internally groaned. At least they thought he was possessed, that could be easily explained away but he was not looking forward to trying to explain it to his parents…
Still maybe if he gets ahead of this…
It was with that thought in mind that he bolted away into the treeline beside the school, transformed and headed off to his home landing in his bedroom only a few minutes later. He went human, back intangible and invisible came out the door, made sure the coast was clear before speeding his way down into the basement.
He just made it down the stairs startling his mother and father who blinked at him curiously, when the phone rang cutting off his mother’s “Honey? What are you doing home so soon?”
“It’s the school calling Mads,” Jack says, sounding disappointed as the large man sent a look of disapproval to his boy.
“Wait!” Danny jumped forward answering the phone and instantly hanging it up.
“Daniel!” His mother exclaimed abashedly.
“I wanna explain first! Do you know how all your stuff goes off on me? Well, the shield at school started doing that and they think I’m possessed! I’m not, it's just the… ya know…” Danny rambled off hurriedly hoping against hope that his parents wouldn’t try to send him to decontamination … again… (Thanks to his ghost half, it burned in places he didn’t ever want to burn)
“You’re possessed Dann-o?!” Jack exclaimed instantly pulling a Fenton gun from somewhere on his person and brandishing it towards his son.
Danny threw his hands up and waved them placatingly at his father. “NO! Just the normal stuff! The contamination from the portal accident set it off. I got too close to the sensor!” He says quickly ignoring how his parents seem to flinch slightly.
His parents shared a look before his father seemed to deflate, seemingly upset at the fact his son wasn’t possessed. “I thought we fixed that... “ Jack says with a frown. “But, we can’t let the school know we may have messed it up! I know we’ll just run the tests again and fix it in the night!”
“Yeah, that would be- Wait what?” Danny blinks. Why couldn’t they just go down and fix it normally? Of course, his parents had to be weird about this too. “Thanks… Is there anything you need from me to help?”
And with those words said he almost instantly regretted it. “Well… We would really like to know why your ecto signature lines up perfectly with Phantom’s but perhaps that can wait.” Maddie offered with a small amused smile.
Danny sputtered at that, “Wh-What?”
“We set up a monitoring system so we can tell which ghosts most frequent the school… Phantom was the one that triggered the shield twice today. There actually wasn’t anything else that did,” Maddie explained with a deepening frown.
“You sure you’re not possessed, son?” Jack asked again this time sounding almost defeated in how, well, normal a volume he asked that. The hidden meaning was all too obvious especially after he mentioned his accident…
They thought he was dead! The portal killed him! And as the growing pit of dread grew into Danny’s stomach he couldn’t help but feel awful knowing they were correct in that assumption, well at least half right anyhow.
“Yeah… I’m… I’m me…” Danny managed out his voice cracking
“O-oh hun....” Maddie sniffed.
“But it’s not I… I’m me, I promise and I’m not all dead. I still have a heartbeat and everything!” Danny argued or rather tried to as his mother was quick to kneel before him taking his face in her hands as tears bubbled down her chin.
“Mom really I’m like … half at most. More human with a side of ghostly abilities ya know?”
“Oh, it’s okay Dann-o… You're still my son, I know ya are. It’s been almost a year since that accident and you’re mostly still you.” Jack said. “Just worse grades and more hormones and-”
“Thanks, guys really,” Danny sighed in relief both at dodging the potentially awkward birds and ghostly bees talk as well as the tepid acceptance he was getting. Awkward though it may be it was still acceptance nonetheless. He was happy for it just the same.
“Maybe while we work on fixing up the shield to ignore Phantom’s signature you can tell us about some things?” Maddie asked sniffling again as she looked over her son’s face trying her best to hold herself together and not outright bawl at the thought she had killed her youngest child.
“Y-yeah… I’ve been wanting to tell you about this for a while now but, well, ya know…” Danny offered uselessly.
“I think it’s us who should apologize for that, son but maybe we can just all go get some triple chocolate fudge milkshakes and go deal with that shield after dinner?” Jack offered with a smile, ever the one to break up tension.
“Yeah, yeah… that sounds good.” Danny agreed. Well, it wasn't how he was expecting this to go, but he was kinda glad it ended up like this. Maybe now they could repair their strained relationship.
As Maddie ruffled up Danny’s hair the teen offered her his first genuine smile in almost a year.

En Pointe! - Spencer
i’m excited to announce that i actually finished another fic in order of when i meant to write the next set of fics! i finally got inspiration to finish this one that i’ve had drafted for a little while.
Request: You are a ballerina who lands a huge role and your boyfriend, Spencer, and the team are there to support you.
warnings? none. just fluff
____________________
“Guess what! I have something so, so, sooo special for you.” You said, squealing.
“You can’t be pregnant, can you? Well I guess you can be if it isn’t mine but I highly doubt you’re having a kid with someone else because you’re always working.” He said, lightly.
“I’m pregnant with Prentiss’ baby.” You chuckled.
“I knew it.” Spencer said. “I always thought there was something up with you two.” You could hear his smile over the phone.
“No, you doof. I got the lead! I’m Cinderella!” You yelled in your car. It came out more like a squeal but you knew Spencer knew what you were saying because he had been just as nervous as you after your second set of auditions.
“Oh my god, I’m so proud of you! I wish I was there with you so I could pick you up and spin you around.” Spencer’s smile sounded bigger.
“I hate this.” You pouted. Spencer knew you were pouting and could clearly remember your pouty face.
“I’m sorry, baby. I wish I could be there but this case doesn’t seem like it’s wrapping up any time soon.” Spencer said into the phone. You could hear the sounds of police chatter in the background.
You were the company’s lead ballerina now. You worked years to earn the position, even before you knew you wanted it. Your dream had always been to be Cinderella in the Cinderella Ballet and you finally worked your way up the ranks to be at the top. Thousands of hours of hard work finally paid off for you and the only thing you wanted to do was celebrate it with your boyfriend. Unfortunately he was halfway across the country.
“We open on Friday. Do you think that it will be done by then?” You asked, looking for your sunglasses in the car. You always ended up misplacing them.
It was a bright and sunny day for once to match your mood as you left for lunch. You didn’t have much time since you needed to get your Cinderella leotards fitted so they could make adjustments. You were just going to grab something light.
“I don’t know, love. I can’t tell. Hopefully but I can’t be sure. You know how these things work…” Spencer trailed off.
“I know, I know.” You sighed.
“If we can’t make it back in time, I’ll send you a present. I promise.” Spencer said, hurriedly.
“Okay, well… I love you.” You said, knowing that he was about to go back to the case.
“I love you too, y/n. I’ll see you soon, okay?” Spencer said as the two of you signed off.
The next few days went by in a blur. It was stressful, getting ready to open, but you knew all of the choreography by heart and by the time the grueling practices came to an end and it was time for the real thing, you were excited but still bummed.
You loved Spencer, you did. But the one thing you hated so much was your conflicting schedules. It had been a topic of conversation before, when the two of you fought about it once, but it had been dropped after working through the real issue: you missed him and he missed you and that kept you together when the nights got cold and the days felt long.
“Opening night…” You said, finishing your make-up touches.
“I’m FBI. I can go back here if I please.” You heard someone trying to convince the security guard to move aside. You recognized that voice before.
“Penelope?” You called, getting up from your seat in front of the mirror.
“Hi! Your boyfriend sent me!” She smiled, covered in fairytale memorabilia. Everything on her shimmered and sparkled, even her glasses.
“You’re my present?” You asked, slightly deflated.
You loved everyone on Spencer’s team but you meshed with certain people better than others. You liked Emily. You loved JJ. You blended with Morgan. You got Hotch to smile once and you never let him live it down whenever Spencer had you around the team, when time allowed. Penelope was a different story. You loved her in theory but you would’ve taken Hotch over her any day just because Penelope was lovely, she just was a lot to handle at once.
“No! But I come bearing gifts!” She said, pushing past the security guard. She was holding a small box in her hand. There was a tag with Spencer’s name in his weird handwriting on the top.
Taking the box from Garcia and pulling her close to you, you realized that you didn’t need Spencer there on opening night to know that he was with you. He sent someone he cared about in his place. He sent you a present, something just between the two of you. He even got up super early, despite the time difference, and left you a voicemail while you were sleeping so you could hear his voice. He knew you got nervous before performances so he always left you something special.
“Thank you, Penelope.” You told her as the security guard dragged her away, telling her to go find her seat or she wouldn’t find her way into the performance at all.
You opened the box and found a heart locket. A gorgeous, gold heart locket. You pulled it open to find a picture of you and Spencer on one side and a picture of you dancing on the other side. You hadn’t seen this second picture before so you assumed that it was a photo Spencer took of you when you weren’t paying attention. He did that often when you allowed him to come into the studio with you on your days off. He loved to take photos of you dancing. He said you looked so happy, so natural.
You put the box in your bag backstage and looked at the clock. You had time to listen to his voicemail one more time before the performance before you raced off to your first spot.
The first act always passes by so quickly but intermission couldn’t get here fast enough. One thing you liked about being Cinderella was you had the choice of walking out with some of the smaller roles and meeting guests in the lobby. You were so used to doing it for the smaller roles you performed for the company that you decided to do it for the first night at least.
Walking out with security and a handler, you saw the crowd of actual people looking at you in awe. All of these faces, all of them invested in your dancing. You got to meet so many little kids that were so inspired by you. Little girls had Cinderella shirts on and gorgeous dresses you found so beautiful. You were speaking to a young girl who reminded you of yourself when you were younger when her parents took her over to buy a shirt after they saw how happy she was to speak with you.
You glanced over in their direction and out the corner of your eye, you saw a head of brunette hair and a navy blue cardigan, something your boyfriend would wear. Your eyes adjusted past the little girl, only to see it was a false alarm. There was no one there except Penelope, waving at you. You smiled at her, waving back, and glanced around the area. People were starting to fill back into their seats but there was still a reasonable crowd settled outside, talking with the other dancers. You figured it was a good time to stretch before the second half of the ballet so you headed back to the dressing room to check your phone. Spencer had texted you one more time, sending a winky face. There was only one time he sent a winky face, meaning he would see you soon.
You danced with precision and grace, hitting all of your marks perfectly. Of course, you had to be as perfect as possible for the role but even the pressure didn’t phase you now. You were flying, held up by your partner. You were flying, gliding on the wings of the applause. You were being showered by applause before you knew it, a smile bigger than ever on your face. The lights hindered your ability to see the crowd but you knew that all of these people were clapping for Cinderella, her story, you.
So why did it feel so… Empty?
You walked out of the dressing room, dressed in normal comfy clothes, greeted by Garcia with a single blue rose. You smiled and made small talk before you were tapped on the shoulder by someone you didn’t see walk up to you.
“I believe this is yours.” Hotch said, presenting you with another blue rose. You smiled and hugged him, so excited.
“I can’t believe you came!” You said, looking between Hotch and Garcia.
Garcia was smiling but not at you. Around Hotch’s back stood Morgan, JJ, and Prentiss. All three of them holding roses for you.
“Guys!” You were getting so overwhelmed with emotions that you almost forgot the biggest factor in all of this.
“Surprise!” Spencer said in a small voice, a big smile on his face and open arms.
You finally got to run into his arms and let him spin you around. Your smile was just as big as his, tears streaming down your cheeks.
“Were you here the whole time?” You asked when he put you down.
“I was! I wanted to surprise you. With the roses, our family, and my heart. Well, the locket but still my heart.” He said, hands still tightly wrapped around you.
“You were amazing!” JJ said, followed by a chorus of agreement from the rest of the team. Spencer finally let you go when you pulled away to talk to everyone. He opted for holding your hand instead and he never let it go.
“I told them you looked stunning.” Garcia said, excitedly.
“You’re giving babygirl a run for her money.” Derek said, nudging Penelope.
All of you continued to talk in the lobby until Derek suggested getting dinner. Everyone but you and Spencer decided to go but the two of you promised a rain check on that dinner. You were exhausted and all Spencer wanted to do was spend time with you.
“You really surprised me.” You said, squeezed his hand in the car.
“Good. I was hoping Garcia didn’t spoil anything. She’s been known to hold a secret for 13 hours at the most but even then, she’s pushing it.” Spencer chuckled as he drove the two of you home.
“The picture in the locket. I didn’t recognize it. Where is it from?” You said, running the piece of jewelry between your fingers.
“It’s the first picture I ever took of you, before we started dating, resized to fit in the locket.” Spencer said.
“You saved that?” You said, chuckling. You didn’t think he was interested in you back then.
“I saved it and the very next day, I told everyone about you. How beautiful you were, how you don't walk, you gracefully float places, and of course how delicately you danced.” Spencer said.
You wanted to continue the conversation but when you tried to talk, you felt the feeling of sleep gripping your body. The two of you got back home to his apartment and as soon as you hit the bed, you fell into a deep, very needed sleep.

"If At First You Don't Succeed, Lie, Lie Again"
The opener for this episode is a lot. On the list of phrases I never thought I'd hear is "strung out Powerpuff Girl," but here we are and I must have heard it before. It would be nice if she actually looked terrible and not like she has a fresh face full of morning make-up.
Holy shit, 50k in the hole! I forgot it was that much, damn! Ashley really did steal more than a pair of sunglasses.
Paige just casually walks into the locker room while half the girls on this swim team are naked and starts passing out boxes. The visual is like if your parents decided to host Christmas morning in the bathroom while you're shaving. I hope there are condoms in those tiny-ass boxes.
Forgot how much sass and snark they crammed into Caleb, too.
Oh no, not more Ezria drama. Goddamn, "A," if I have to sit through any more of this painful boredom I might just lose my mind.
Hanna didn't even ask "How much?" before she addressed this envelope. Who's doing shit like this for less than $1500? Actually, me- or at least I would hope. I would turn Ezra in for free and let Noel take the fall.
There is not one bit of intrigue to this relationship outside of the teacher/student angle. I don't even feel that much chemistry. Ezria is nothing but constant drama, there isn't anything cute or fun or sexy about it as a hook. If you didn't get wholly invested in them from just watching them make out and probably hook up in a bar bathroom, you're pretty much fucked every time they're on screen.
Paige needs to leave her hands off of other peoples' intimates. What is wrong with her??
My subtitles thought "Shawn" was "John."
"Why is this called meat casserole?"- do they do this shit in middle-class cities, too? In school districts that house two-lawyer households, the kids can't even have good mac & cheese or something?
Also, I'm genuinely glad no one gives a fuck that Emily is gay except her mother and the closeted bully. The other girls just found out a couple episodes ago and Spencer's ready to throw down with some bitch making negative comments. Pam Fields causes more than enough drama for this whole show.
Aw, no condoms for Emily.
I feel like this conversation about Justin Bieber, specifically referring to him as "the Beebs," really fucking dates this show.
Does no one ever notice Aria wandering around Ezra's apartment complex? Coming in and out of his room? Or are we to believe counting to 50 really works every time? If everyone here is so lazy about their secrets, it's no wonder how "A" finds everything out.
Jason is a weird dude. I would have loved to see Jason and Ian as a couple.
"You walked out on me, Ella, remember?!"- Byron, you had an affair with a university student and used your kid daughter to cover it up, then forced her to move out because you all of a sudden decided to care about the kids and "didn't feel right leaving them." You have no room to be talking about your arrangement like that, in fact, you shouldn't even be talking at all. Shut up, you piece of shit.
So, the real elephant in the room is...just an episode or two ago, "A" was all "Team Ezria!", so why now do they suddenly want this exposed?
I love how Spencer and Alison have this fight that's basically a heated argument with some casual philosophical debate thrown in.
We never do find out why all of these characters cooperate with "A".

Blindsided-Part 7
A/N: It has been 2 YEARS since I updated this pic. Two freaking years. I’m not even sure if the people who enjoyed it are still invested, but I am determined to finish this series this time. I hope you enjoy!
Steve hadn’t gone back home after going to a bar last night.
Nat and Tony had both called you to ask if he was at your place when they realized he wasn’t at HQ.
And then he was late. Steve was never late.
You sat on the training mat in the gym, gripping your coffee and scrolling through missions when he made his appearance, stuffing his clothes from yesterday into his duffel.
You glanced at him, raising an eyebrow. You refused to let him know you’d been worried something bad had happened to him, but after three unanswered texts in which you’d been left on-read, you’d stopped bugging him.
“Good night?” you asked casually, sipping your coffee.
He dropped his bag on the bench with a thud, wrapping his hands with tape. “Not in the way you’re implying.”
You held up a hand to ward off any attack, heaving yourself to your feet. “I wasn’t implying anything.” you finished your coffee, setting the mug on the other end of the bench as he turned to face you.
He set his hands on his hips, staring you down with those intense blue eyes. “Yes, you were.”
You shrugged. “You were gone all night. What you did isn’t my business.”
And it wasn’t.
You didn’t care.
That was a lie. You did care, even though you shouldn’t have.
Your feelings were like a tornado and you couldn’t make sense of them. This jealousy at the possibility he spent the night with a woman was ridiculous. Not only had you just ended your engagement, but you’d also agreed to go on a date with Pietro, so you shouldn’t have been thinking of Steve that way at all.
“Y/N, did you hear me?” He probed impatiently and your head whipped up.
“I’m sorry, what?” you asked, meeting his gaze.
“I stayed at Sam’s place,” he replaced the roll he was using on his hands back in his bag and sat down lightly on the bench, his fingers curling over the edge.
“Is this because I agreed to go on a date with Pietro?” you asked, hugging yourself lightly. “I know you see him every day and if it’s too weird for you two, then tell me. I don’t want to make anything awkward.”
He shook his head, his hair falling into his eyes until he brushed it back, retaping his left hand. “That had nothing to do with you and everything to do with me,” he sighed.
“So it is because I told Pietro I’d go on a date with him?” you asked, staring down at your empty coffee mug like it was the most interesting thing you’d ever seen.
“Yes.” your head snapped up as he continued, dragging his hand over his face. “No. I don’t know,” he mumbled, his words muffled by his palm. “Things are complicated.” his jaw snapped together as he stood, zipping up his bag aggressively.
“How?” you pressed, crossing your arms.
“You’re my best friend, Y/N.” He slammed his bag onto the floor and you flinched at the violent action. “It can’t be more than that. I told you I wouldn’t lose you, and I meant that.” He sighed raggedly. “I’m gonna go hit the bag. You don't need to spar with me,” he muttered, brushing past you.
You stood there, dumbfounded, unsure what to do or say.
So you did nothing.
~~~~~~~~
Several days passed, and Steve still kept you at arm’s length.
Men could be so incredibly frustrating, and it turned out super soldiers were no exceptions. Pietro had called and texted you some, but you’d yet to go on an actual date. Although you still had plans to go out for dinner on Friday, so it was still happening, angry, moody Steve, or not.
You sighed inwardly. Tony was having a pool party at his mansion to celebrate his engagement to Pepper, and although Steve had offered to drive you, the car ride was still filled with awkward, insufferable silence. You had no clue how to fix it, but mainly because the stubborn man wouldn’t tell you what you’d done wrong in the first place.
He’d made it perfectly clear he didn’t want any romantic relationship, and frankly, you didn’t think you were ready for more. You’d already begun to regret saying yes to Pietro, but what could one date hurt?
You arrived at the tower and took a deep breath. So much had changed since the last time you’d been here. Then, you’d been blindly happy and engaged. Steve got out of the car, and you followed, more awkward silence stretching between the two of you. Normally, it was a comfortable silence, but now it felt like he was building an invisible wall to block you out.
You followed him to the massive backyard, a gust of wind pushing your hair into your eyes. “Hey, there you guys are!” Pietro waved from a nearby lawn chair. He grabbed two beers from the cooler and jogged over to meet you. He only wore a pair of navy board shorts slung low on his lean hips, and dark sunglasses hid his eyes, although nothing could hide his blinding smile. A twinge of guilt shot through you that his smile did nothing to you, but it wasn’t…..
You shook your head to clear the thought away as Steve strode away, not waiting for Pietro to reach the two of you. He held a beer out and you smiled, taking a sip. It wasn’t your favorite, but it was the thought that counted, right?
“How’ve you been?” he asked, pushing his sunglasses up further on his head. You shrugged. “Busy, honestly. I’m super behind on my reports,” you admitted.
He nodded, and after a moment's silence, laughed. “It’s really hot. I’m gonna get back in the pool. You wanna come?” he tossed his thumb over his shoulder at the crystal blue water.
“Sure,” you smiled, grateful for something to break the quiet. You stripped off your tank top and shorts and tossed them onto the nearest lawn chair, having worn your black and white bikini underneath.
Tony’s friend, James Rhodes, occupied one of the lawn chairs as you followed Pietro, and he looked up at you from his phone. “Hey, Y/N, right?” he asked.
You nodded. You hadn’t seen James Rhodes since the disaster last New Year’s. He’d been absent when Brett and Steve got into a fight, but he’d caught you and Brett in a hallway on his way back from the bathroom. Brett had been shouting at you, making everything out to be your fault, and you’d stood there, mute, as you took his verbal assault. James interrupted, cutting Brett down with quick, sharp words. Brett didn’t yell again that night.
“How’ve you been?” he questioned. “Where’s…?” he paused, waiting for you to fill in the blank.
“Fucking someone else,” you replied, taking another sip of your beer. At this point, you didn’t even care anymore.
James winced. “Sorry?”
Your lips quirked into a half-smile. “You said that like a question.” He paused, seeming to search for the right words. “He didn’t seem very nice,” he shrugged.
“Yeah, I’m glad it’s over.” It was the first time you’d said the words out loud and you felt a stirring in your heart at the truth in them. You were better off without him. Bigger and better things were headed your way and when the time was right, you would fall in love again. For real this time.
“I’m happy to hear that,” he smiled. “Hey,” Pietro pulled your attention away. “You ready?” he asked.
You set down your beer, nodding, and followed him to the pool. Stepping into the cool water felt amazing and you let out a breathy sigh as Pietro forgoed the steps, diving into the water.
He swished his wet hair from his eyes upon surfacing, and swam over, grinning. “Some party, huh?” he asked, looking around.
“Tony likes to go all out,” you agreed, scanning the decorations and guests as you swam over to the nearest wall, kicking out your legs behind you. Pietro joined you, mimicking your position.
“How was your mission?” you asked, squinting in the sunlight. He stretched his palms out on the concrete, and you noted the callouses on his hands. Steve had similar ones. They came from all the fighting. You’d asked if they hurt once, and he said it looked worse than it felt.
“Fun,” he grinned. You chose not to comment, stories of what Pietro did after those missions were common, and most included him taking a local girl to his hotel.
“I wish I could’ve gone with you guys,” you muttered, still slightly irritated your team had been sat out.
“Next time,” he winked, his arm bumping into yours as he drew closer. You opened your mouth to respond, the sounds quickly turning into a scream when someone cannonballed into the pool behind you, drenching your upper body. You turned, ready to go off when Steve surfaced between you and Pietro. “Steve?” you asked incredulously. “What the hell are you doing?”
He shook his head, water droplets flying. “I was hot, so I'm cooling off.”
You’d never wanted to punch him so bad before. You glared, tongue working behind your closed mouth as you tried to form words. “You’re starting to piss me off,” you finally hissed. With an apologetic smile in Pietro’s direction, you pulled yourself out of the pool, ringing your hair out.
You headed for the side of the house, needing a moment to collect yourself before you hit your best friend. His odd behavior the past few days, combined with what had just happened, was more than enough to make you angry.
You’d barely rounded the house when a warm hand caught your elbow. Tiny chills broke out along your spine and you knew who it would be standing there before you turned around.
“Let me go,” You jerked your arm away and he did. You stared at Steve, letting him feel the anger radiating from you. His hair dripped water along his chest, and you followed a bead down his stomach to his red board shorts that hung dangerously low on his hips, disappearing along the trail of dark hair beneath his belly button.
“What are you doing?” you snapped, hugging yourself. “Because you’re being an ass.” He glanced down, having the decency to look ashamed. He ran his hands over his face, letting out a small groan. “I don’t know,” he admitted.
“No. You can't tell me that you don’t want anything more than a friendship and then start acting like a dog marking his territory when I decide to date someone else. This is my life, Steve. Figure out how you want to be in it.” you snapped, staring him down, daring him to try and argue. “I have been going through a lot, especially recently, and I shouldn’t have to be worried about my best friend hating me for trying to put my life back together.”
He nodded, sweeping his hair back. “I know, I’m sorry.”
“Listen, I can talk to Tony and see if he can reassign me to a new team. I’ll be out of your way and things won’t be so tense between us anymore.” you offered. Working with him seemed like it was only aggravating the situation.
“No, don’t.” he protested, shaking his head. “That’s not necessary and I don’t want to derail your career. I’ll get my act together, I promise.”
You hesitated, studying his expression before you softened. Steve had yet to break a promise to you. “I believe you.”
Relief flooded his face and he took a deep breath, offering you a small smile. “Can we just forget the past few days?” he asked. You returned his smile and nodded and he visibly relaxed. He reached forward and tugged you into a hug and you melted against him, feeling the stress of the situation melt away.
“I’m sorry again,” he murmured against your hair. You opened your mouth to respond when a cough surprised you both and you pulled away, Pietro standing awkwardly behind Steve. “I thought I’d make sure you two weren’t trying to claw one another’s eyes out, but it seems like that’s not necessary.” he smiled tightly, looking between you and Steve.
You lifted your hands and wiggled your fingers jokingly. “No claws here, see?” After a moment Pietro relaxed, returning your smile and you breathed a silent sigh of relief. You’d just cleared up the tension, you didn’t need more.
“Shall we?” you asked Pietro, stepping forward to walk with him back towards the pool, his hand landing on the small of your back as you walked. You stole a glance back at Steve, his hands on his hips as he looked at the ground.
He lifted his head slightly, catching your eye and you quickly looked away, focusing instead on what Pietro was telling you, but that brief look from Steve had revealed much more than he’d said and the ache inside you seemed to grow stronger.
