I dunno if I just have big brain disease, but the fact that people are shocked to learn that AI will write up silly nonsense that needs to be fact checked is like...supremely dumb. why would you think it could write an essay from nothing and be finished from the jump. do we live in magic times? are people forgetting that robots and computers are dumb as fuck? they only do what we tell them to do. if you can't write the essay, how are you going to program the computer to write the essay? sorry just seems obvious to me lol. if you go on chatgp or w/e and say "do my homework" "do my work" and you just turn that shit in without reading it you're a ding dong

Something I find discouraging now that AI is more developed, is that the speech it uses to sound more intelligent often sounds like my unmasked speech. I haven't come across this issue verbally, but when submitting papers and answering questions online, I have been questioned multiple times about the use of AI in formulating my response. It hasn't caused me too much trouble, and allegedly people believe me, but I'm not so sure that they're truthful in saying that. To clarify, AI speech can be helpful and I'm not coming for those who use it to communicate, but it is frustrating to have my responses misunderstood as originating from AI and not from me.
Today I saw a post by someone, that had the comments tearing them apart for using AI to script their inquiry. To them, the use of larger, more descriptive/less colloquial, key words that may not have been necessary to include, is indicative of using a program like ChatGP. To be fair I can never know if the poster was being truthful in saying that they did not use AI, but reading the post, I could see myself typing the same thing.
I worry for future online interactions while AI remains in this sort of "uncanny valley" stage. While I am able to mask in the majority of discussions, it takes a great amount of effort and I'm not always successful. I am also confused, as I was encouraged to learn larger, more descriptive vocabulary in school to describe my thoughts, but in every day life, the use of uncommon vocabulary and syntax is looked down upon as pretentious and inauthentic. I worry that people will garner disdain towards me, should they not believe the origin of my script. Even looking back at that sentence, I am disappointed with how evident it is that it was not generated by someone with a typical speaking pattern. With intentional thought, I believe I could modify my responses to fit the standard format of speech, if I remember to. But I select the words I do for a reason, and changing the words I use changes the meaning of my response. I would like the full intent and meaning of my thoughts to be conveyed, and to have my words understood as my own.

The Avery Scandal
@moonchild8912
@hawks-flat-ass
a true story complete with pictures.
The Avery Link⬇️ https://hawksflatass.carrd.co/ Las Vegas Degends Link⬇️ https://discord.gg/BjD3Qxr7Dp
i like fan fiction about hawks.  i first got a link to a discord when i saw a tic tok video on Emerson Writes. it boasted a friendly 'welcoming' environment for writers and readers. i joined but was mostly out of the server and when i was i was a lurker, as are many on Discord.
then one day I logged on to find that the server was basically being dismantled. there was hardly anyone and i found a apology post from EM<3 or Emerson writes. she talked about being jealous and how sorry she was. sadly i don't have a screenshot of that.
i found that things were moving to a new server and asked to join. i was told that if i did i couldn't lurk anymore because they wanted 'active participants' in hindsight that was the first red flag.
Tumblr media
i joined and tried to be active though I stayed fairly busy and wasn't on enough apparently.
programming a bot to ding and delete any of the things below.
Tumblr media
i was told that it was to keep down bandwidth and to keep things cleaner. She even 'joked' that she'd ban me for doing it.
Tumblr media
she also made a huge list of categories that people constantly added to, from bitching and venting (separate categories) to different anime's all with subcategories for art and discussions. she wanted to keep the discussed topics in there respective categories.
Nope made a role separate for all the original people in the previous server called the OG. and we were told to show them the proper respect.
Tumblr media
it felt like a group of eletes. like this wasn't a friendly place to talk and hang out but a place for Nope, Unearthlyarcana and there click to lord over others. I spoke to someone I trusted. Who I thought was a friend about it
Tumblr media Tumblr media
she instigated a jailing system with tears that she refers to as the 9 hells. much like those found in Dantes inferno. it was played off as a fun joke. something to laugh at because at first it was merely a role icon and a disgusting puke color for your name. but then they added punishments. things to do to get out of jail. at first, it was small, drink water, go outside. take pictures as proof. and quickly escalated to more. Reading my fan fiction and commenting on x number of chapters or be banned or kicked was always my favorite. 🙄
Nope even would go so far as to kick people out of VC for the hell if it
Tumblr media
for each of these red flags that made me uncomfortable, i spoke to someone i believed to be my friend. she convinced me to stay despite the knawing feeling i should leave. things turned even more toxic. Nope was jailing people a lot more and it often felt like if you said or posted the wrong thing you'd be jailed or banned. i went in one day to find that almost everyone was in jail save a handful who had not been in the server the day before.
they'd been banned for posting about what they thought was a ChatGP into the Chatgp catigorie, only it was a game. that was it. another friend of mine told me nope was also mad because she had recommended Unearthly arcanas fanfic to an artist and not hers.
I was invited into a secret chat on the side where others could feel safe to talk without fear of nope. It was called the Degens. that was my breaking point. By this point my 'friends' Jelli and Bunny had left the server
i brought up my concerns as politely as possible.
Tumblr media
laying out only some of the problems, the toxic atmosphere that had been created. i was told thems the rules and there's the door.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
my favorite was if your uncomfortable there's an exit button
so i took the door. not that i was planning to stay since my two friends had left as well.
that was December 2024.....my friends said they'd keep in touch.....only they didn't. i made a server of my own and invited everyone on my friends list i could find. that included unearthlyarcana. i had only delt with Nope, and hadn't spoken to unearthlyarcana much. but most of the people on my friends list swore she was a nice person. this is all i knew at the time.
weeks past..turning into months and my friends never reached out. i was always the one to ask how they were, what was happening. and was met with either silence or that they were busy. i even asked if there was something wrong and was told no. just dealing with family stuff and work. they did not accept an invitation to my own server. (See Jelli and Bunnie chapters respectively) fast forward to febuary and i find a discord link to Vages Degens on Unearthlyarcans  profile. i get accepted after a while. you know what i found? my 'firends' that i hadn't spoken to in months, acting like nothing had happened. they hadn't thought to invite me as they had others. i didn't even know one of them was pregnant until i saw a post about it. especially significant since she had previously on the last server, the Avery, told us she was struggling to get pregnant and really wanted to be a mom. the other friend didn't even acknowledge me.
i felt betrayed and excluded. i sobbed like a baby to my husband who had been telling me for months that theses people weren't real friends.
i decided that if they were going to act like this id just go back to the Avery, be in both servers.
i apologized for what id said, even though i hadn't done anything wrong other than stick my nose in, which others had been doing too. i was told to not have contact with unearthlyarcana.  i was told i needed to seek forgiveness from two others including my friend (Bunny) the friend id been asking what was wrong for months, the friend who hardly spoke to me. i hadn't even known she was mad at me until then.
that 'friend' refused to speak to me and blocked me. using Nope to tell me i couldn't come back to the Avery because she was 'uncomfortable with me' (See the Nope chapter) it was strange that i was told to cut ties with Unearthlyarcana and leave her server when 'my friend' was in both. Thats right bunny was in both and what's more? Nope helped her get back in when she was kicked
Tumblr media
It's great because they never offered me that.
i did some digging, snicking onto the server because no one would tell me what i did and i at the very least wanted to know what had happened, what did i do to make Bunny mad. the answer"
"Im not a fan of how Dee jumped on Nope" "Also throwing your name out there
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I wanted to make friends too. that was it. i wanted to talk, had tried to talk. they claim to be adults but that is clearly not how they act. Instead of friends I got treated the way they claim  Unearthlyarcana treated them (see the Em chapter)
so since everyone likes spilling there version of tea, and everyone seems to hate screenshots and sharing them and since i 'jumped on nope' let me do a proper job of it so you can see the difference between being brought a problem and being jumped on.
The Avery and Degeen Vagus have some of the most toxic people you'll meet. oh there not toxic to your face. no no, its behind your back. they make policies to gaslight and make you believe its all in your head but really, your feeling ostrasized because you are being ostrasized. Nope likes to air out her dirty laundry to gain sympathy and make herself feel better as far as i can tell bunny is her protige and em is the exact same. they did to me what they claim unearthly arcana did to them. and i guarantee they cant live without stirring up more trouble. there server only works if people are ostracized.
Here's the rest of what i found:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I didn't even know Unearthlyarcana bitched about me. So much for friends having my back.

what if you give like a detailed synopsis on chatgp about the characters and the story? I feel like this could be an interesting tool for people that are insecure about writing fanfic but have great ideas. Or would it still not really give the characters much of anything to work on?
I mean, that depends a lot on what you're looking for. I've heard of people using it as a kind of sounding board, and that can help you unwind some threads in your own brain. The more complex input you give it, the more it has to go off when constructing its answer to you. But at least to me, everything I've read generated by chatgpt or its ilk sounds both flat and a bit soulless. That works well for things like writing a summary of a longer text (if not perfect, it can give you something to start from) or an information brochure or similar, but for stuff that's meant to be creative there's just no spark.
I'm sure fic writers (aspiring or not) could find some use in it, but for people who are insecure about their own writing, I'm afraid the only way to really get better is to write. It's a skill that can be improved, but like any other skill it doesn't come for free.

i think chatgp-me made the classic rookie mistake of writing like i'm talking to someone who has never read anything that hasnt manually been approved by a school board in suburban wisconsin. whereas the way i actually write is that i assume you're a once-in-a-generation genius and if you cant follow it i barely care
mine is just so far removed though. i don't really bother to get mad at the way imperialists talk because it isnt 2014 anymore

Thoughts on generative AI or AI in general? Especially its impact on history, economics, politics, and society at large? Huge topic obviously but would love your perspective.
I consider "generative AI" (to the extent thatterm is even accurate) to be kind of bullshit.
I've already written about the fundamental commercial problems that AI suffers from. I think this will severely limit the actual value of "generative AI" to the vast majority of people. A lot of these yahoos trying to gold rush what they think is the next revolution by spamming magazine submissions and the like are going to find that they've wasted their time.
When it comes to the personal use issue, I find it a bit concerning from the position of personal development. This may make me sound a bit like Grandpa SImpson yelling at clouds, but it is noticeable that a lot of people seem to be using generative AI either to outright cheat (doing their homework, plagiarizing essays, taking remote exams for them) or otherwise get out of having to do the heavy lifting of intellectual labor - and that's a problem, because practice is the main way our brains learn, so I do worry that there are going to be a lot of people wh'll gradually eliminate their own ability to actually do important forms of intellectual labor without the crutch of a computer program doing the work for them. Again, it's a bit of a kneejerk "hard work is good for you"/"back in my day" reaction, but as someone who's had to teach remedial essay-writing for more than a decade because the high schools have stopped teaching this stuff, I do think it matters.
I also find it a bit concerning on another level, because what AI researchers seem to be automating isn't the boring busywork of modern life that should be automated out of existence, but the creative work that people tend to find compelling and rewarding. When I read about D&D players using ChatGP to write an adventure for them or DM for them and the like, it makes me sad, because that's the stuff I do for fun and I don't get the idea of wanting a machine to do the fun stuff for them because it's less work.
And then finally there's the issue of ego and ownership. One of the things I've noticed time and again in discussions of AI on various discussion threads and social media sites is that people often develop a largely-unearned sense of ownership and accomplishment over the products of generative AI: over and over again, I see people say "look at what I wrote" or "look at what I painted" when all they did was enter a prompt and let something else do the actual creative work. (Even as they often admit that they used AI because they couldn't be bothered to muster the effort to learn how to do it themselves or because they're too cheap to pay working writers and artists a fair rate for their labor.)I find that attitude a bit insulting to actual writers and artists and more than a bit pathetic.

In 1969, in the episode ‘Love All,’ John Steed met an AI / ChatGP that wrote romance novels. ‘Her’ name was Rosemary Z. Glade.
They input various scenarios into the computer, and then 'Rosemary' popped out over 400 romance novels based on those scenarios. What's of interest here is
1) how quickly the AI can pop something out when it has all the built in scenarios,
2) even in '69, they realised that to get an AI to pop something out, you have to put something original IN. Funny how someone's imagined version of how this would work is precisely what has happened 54 years later.
youtube
Originally aired 3 Feb 1969. Season 7, episode 21.
Please forgive the bad recording and bad audio- I tried uploading it to YouTube to automatically create craptions, but it just won't do it. Please see below for the transcript.
Teleplay by Jeremy Burnham, directed by Peter Sykes
Transcript:
[Steed knocks on a door. A woman, Thelma, is inside, talking to a recording device. He watches her.]
Thelma: Sir. Please... Please take the blindfold off my eyes. I know you're there. I sense the aura of evil that surrounds you. I beg you, untie my hands. I can hear you. Your breathing. I can hear your breathing. Why do you torture me this way. Do you keep me in this foul dungeon just to stand and silently gloat over me. Scarlett's voice caught in her throat and she sobbed helplessly. Blinded by the velvet band across her eyes she was unable to see the claw-like hand that reached forward to stroke the ivory flesh of her shoulder--
[Steed puts his hand on her shoulder. She screams.]
Thelma: Oh my goodness you frightened the life out of me.
Steed: I'm most terribly sorry.
Thelma: I should think so too. Scare like that could give a girl grey hair.
Steed: I'm sure that whatever the colour of your hair you'd still be equally attractive.
Thelma: Oooh dear... thank you... It's not original you know.
Steed: Your hair?
Thelma: Your line... it's not original.
Steed: Oh it's been said to you before?
Thelma: Lord Digby Covington said it to Samantha pride in "love under southern skies"... It was just after he'd rescued her from the gorilla who fancied her.
Steed: Of course. I remember now. "Love under southern skies"... It was a very touching story. I read it three times.
Thelma: Something went wrong that day. Couldn't get the end of the story to work. Instead of boy gets girl, it kept coming out girl gets gorilla.
Steed: That's a tricky situation.
Thelma: Very.
Steed: But you solved it with your customary skill. I hope you won't think me immodest if I claim to be your greatest fan.
Thelma: Really?
Steed: I've read all of your books.
Thelma: What, all four hundred and thirty seven?
Steed: On a cold winter's night I like nothing more than curling up in front of the fire with Rosemary Z. Glade.
Steed: Thelma: That's nice.
It's been my life-long ambition to meet Rosemary Z. Glade in the...[flirtatiously] If you'll excuse the expression, flesh. So you can see it's a rather special moment for me miss glade. Or may I call you Rosemary?
Thelma: You may if you like. My name is Thelma.
Steed: You're not Rosemary Z. Glade?
Thelma: No. [points to computer shaped like piano] She is.
Steed: That... writes all those moving novels?!
Thelma: She's a computer... Quite clever really. You see every romantic situation in the world is built into her memory circuits. The keys activate the situations.
Steed: [reading keys on computer shaped like piana] Moonlight kisses. Wife hears rumours. Girl meets wife. Wife sues girl. Wife leaves husband. Husband leaves wife. Girl returns ring. Boy gives flowers. Ah! Fascinating!
Thelma: Once we've picked out the situation, the machine does the rest. It chooses the scenes from the dialogue bank and bingo... Another best selling Rosemary Z. Glade romance. I'll show you if you like.
Steed: Please. The creative arts have always fascinated me.
[Thelma presses several keys, then goes to collect a manuscript that has popped out of the back of the computer. She hands the manuscript to Steed, who looks at it.]
Steed: Ha! Ha!
Thelma: There you are. Instant romance.
Steed: Brilliant.
Thelma: We keep adding new dialogue to the memory banks. That's what I was doing when you came in.
Steed: The machine's a genius.
Thelma: Oh I don't know. It's a very bad speller sometimes, but Mr. Bromfield's working on that.
Steed: Mr. Bromfield?
Thelma: [obviously has a crush on him] Oh he's lovely. And ever so clever with electronic things and stuff. He invented Rosemary.
Steed: Oooh! Well I'd like to meet him.
Thelma: Oh, he's not here at the moment.
Steed: Pity, well I'll call back...[Steed gets distracted when he sees something on a table] Later.
