Survey #391
“if you wanna soar with vultures, you’ll have to swallow crow”
Have you ever been to Australia? No. I want to visit a friend there, but honestly, Australia scares me too much lmao. That place is like, the Hard mode in life. Who was the last person you know to have a birthday? My sister's husband just had his. Are you wearing a necklace? If so, describe it. No. Do you know anyone who is left-handed? My best fren. Ever wear out a CD? What was it? Haha, yeah... I caused a few scratches on Ozzy's Black Rain, as well as one more of his, where the album name is surprisingly evading me. What’s your favorite card game? Magic: The Gathering. What’s your favorite fast food meal? Burgers or chicken tenders are usually my go-to, depending on the place. Where is the best restaurant you’ve ever eaten in at? The Cheesecake Factory. @_@ Lamb chops or pork chops? I've actually never tried lamb chops before, but I've always thought they look yummy. If you HAD to pick ONE song to listen to for the rest of your life, and that would be the only song you ever heard, what would it be? "Life Won't Wait" by Ozzy Osbourne, probably. It's very motivating. Ever heard of Shinedown? Yeah, I like 'em. They're one of Dad's faves. What size is your bed? Queen. What is the first meal you remember eating? Hell if I know. What was the first movie you ever saw? I also don't remember. What percentile of your class were you in? The top. Can you name every place you’ve ever had sex? I probably could, but I'm not going to. What forms of birth control have you used? The pill and also just not having a sex life lmao. Do you use sponges or dishcloths when doing the dishes? A sponge. What’s your favorite song on the top twenty right now? I have zero clue what's in the top twenty. Ever punched a wall? No. What was the last bug you killed and what did you use? An ant in the house. My fingers. Ever get pulled over by the cops and get away without a ticket? I've never been pulled over. What was your first legal alcoholic drink? A margarita, I think? What’s the most expensive things your parents ever bought you? Probably this laptop. What’s the most expensive thing you’ve bought? My snake. Or my most recent tattoo, idr. What is your favorite cover song? I think Disturbed's "Sound of Silence" is unbeatable as a cover. Well, or Johnny Cash's "Hurt." Both SLAUGHTER the originals. Did you ever drop out of school? College, three times. Ever raise a child that wasn’t your own for more than 3 months? No. Strangest medical procedure ever performed on you? Considering the location, having a pilonidal cyst drained by pushing on it. Jesus FUCKING Christ it hurt so goddamn bad. Does the place you work have music playing? What sort? I don’t have a job. Do you use Windows, Mac, Linux, or something else entirely? Windows. Do you cut tags out of clothing so they don’t itch and bother you? Yes. How many times a year do you go on vacation? Zero, generally. What is your favorite time period in history to learn about? The Holocaust. What’s the saddest report you have ever seen on the news? *shrug* I don't watch the news. In your honest opinion, what is the scariest sea creature you know? Putting aside my illogical fear of whale sharks, probably giant squid. Like no thank u. What superpower do you think would be the most handy in times of trouble? Teleportation. Do you believe there is just one love for everyone, or…? No. There are WAY too many people in the world for that. Plus, you're talking to a person who has been in love with two different individuals, and both were perfectly valid feelings. Why are you best friends with your best friend? She's just simply amazing. Strong, funny, intelligent, caring, supportive, loyal... She's, again, amazing. Do you world peace is truly a possibility in the future? Realistically, no. But it's nice to imagine. Pretend you are a really good cook, what meal would you make? *shrug* It would depend on what I wanted to eat. What do you think of when you look at the stars? I quickly changed to German next semester and did that for all four available classes. Do you still have a landline phone in your home? No. Throughout a typical week, which places are you likely to go? I go to the TMS therapy office every weekday, and I might ride with my mom to pick up groceries or something. Yes, because I was afraid to say no. Did you ever date the last person you kissed? Yes. Have you ever held a snake? Plenty of times. How often do you have friends over to your house? Never. Have you ever had a boss who acted unprofessionally? No. Who was the last person who cried around you? Why did they start crying? Was it unexpected? My mom, because she always feels unwanted at Ashley's house. It wasn't unexpected, honestly. She cries a lot in the car when she leaves my sister's house, honestly. It's heartbreaking. Do you have any exercises you do everyday? No. :/ Are you more of a dog or cat person? I'm a cat person. That only becomes more apparent with time, really. Have you ever had a dream of stabbing someone? I probably have, given I've had nightmares of strangling someone, punching and slapping people... all kinds of stuff. My nightmares are so fucking violent and I hate it. Would you ever have a bird as a pet? No. Have you ever had to speak at a funeral? No. Do you know someone who’s been cremated? My dog, as well as my younger sister's old pup. And Mom's. What is your favorite animated movie? The Lion King. Did your grandparents teach you anything? Military working dogs in Iraq get a blood bank like their humans have
U.S. Army Sgt. Jason Salazar, a military working dog handler assigned to the K9 Task Force at Al Asad Air Base, Iraq, prepares to draw blood from Bubo, a patrol explosive detector dog, at the veterinary clinic at Role II.
CHAD GARLAND
October 22, 2020
Military working dog handlers in Iraq have set up a “walking blood bank” for their four-legged partners who help secure bases, hunt explosives and assist in combat missions such as the raid that killed Islamic State leader Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi last year.
“The bank will allow for rapid treatment of injured working dogs,” Operation Inherent Resolve, the U.S.-led coalition battling ISIS in Iraq and Syria, said on Twitter Wednesday.
Boni, Bubo and Rexo, all patrol explosive detector dogs at Al Asad Air Base, were among the pups who had their blood drawn and tested earlier this month to identify their blood types, online photos show.
“This is the first time [Operation Inherent Resolve] has established a mobile blood bank for military working dogs ... and multi-purpose canines,” said Army Col. Wayne Marotto, a coalition military spokesman.
The canine blood bank was started in response to a policy the Army Medical Command surgeon general’s office issued that requires the service’s veterinarians to record blood types for all working dogs, Marotto said. For human casualties in Iraq and Afghanistan, the military has long relied on “walking blood banks” in which prescreened donors can be called up to give blood at a medical facility in case of a mass casualty event or a trauma patient in need of numerous transfusions.
U.S. Army Staff Sgt. Michael Jorgensen, right, a veterinarian technician with the 994th Medical Detachment Veterinary Service, shows how to identify the cephalic vein on a dog to Spc. Mezghan Akbar, left, a medical laboratory specialist with the 466th Medical Company, Area Support, New York National Guard, before she draws blood from Boni, a patrol explosive detector dog assigned to the K9 Task Force at Al Asad Air Base, Iraq, Oct. 7, 2020. Boni, a German Shepherd, was scheduled to have blood drawn so that the veterinary clinic can identify her blood type and initiate a walking blood bank for military working dogs
Blood loss is one of the top preventable causes of combat death. Earlier this year, the Marine Corps also began testing a program in the Middle East modeled on one used by Army Rangers in Afghanistan last year that enables lifesaving transfusions on the battlefield.
The 994th Medical Detachment Veterinary Services Support and medical personnel has set up emergency response capabilities and trained health care providers to ensure the animals receive “the highest level of emergency care,” Marotto said.
Inherent Resolve did not have military canine casualty data, he said. But at least two working dogs in the U.S. Central Command area of operations were medically evacuated following injuries this year, including one from Iraq that suffered cardiac arrest, according to military statements.
Military working dogs like Conan, a Belgian Malinois who was wounded during the mission that killed ISIS leader Baghdadi last October, are “critical members of our forces,” U.S. Central Command boss Gen. Frank McKenzie said last year. Conan had accompanied special operations troops on some 50 missions.
In hot Middle Eastern weather, the availability of donor blood also can be critical for canines off the battlefield. In June, an Air Force pup named Cvoky was rushed by helicopter from Prince Sultan Air Base in Saudi Arabia to Kuwait’s Camp Arifjan after its body temperature reached nearly 110 degrees.
At 104 degrees, dogs begin suffering heat stroke, the Humane Society of the United States website says. Heat injuries can cause internal organ damage and hemorrhage, and few dogs survive if they reach as high a body temperature as Cvoky, a military veterinarian said in a statement after the incident.
But in that case, a pint of blood from a Navy dog named Army helped save his life, the statement said.
“We got the call that my dog, Army, might be a match,” it quoted dog handler Petty Officer 2nd Class Sera Tamez as saying. “It feels really good to help one of our own!”

What an absolutely fantastic weekend.
Let’s start right from the beginning; Friday morning.
I had my alarm set for 9 o’clock in the morning because I had to make a doctors appointment to get some paperwork filled out in order to have my injury insurance claims documented, and Friday was the absolute last day to hand them in. I’m a professional procrastinator, so it’s not out of character for me to not have these done yet on their due date.
After a lot of choreography between me, the receptionist, and my doctor, an appointment was made for me at 10:50. My doctor was extremely helpful to me. The medical clinic faxed my information to my insurance company.
My sister was to pick me up at 12:20. It was nearly noon by the time I got back home. And I still needed to pack. Did I not mention that I hadn’t packed anything yet? I was also still pretty much in my pyjamas, hair unbrushed and Thursdays leftover make up still scattered on my face. Here, we see the procrastinator in me once again.
I scrambled to have everything packed and ready for when my sister arrived. When she did show up, I was three quarters of the way through my make up, and hadn’t touched my hair. Otherwise, I was completely ready. Throughout the remaining duration of time it took for me to finish getting ready, my sister hung out with my mom. It was nice to have that little buffer.
My sister, (Davon,) then brought me back to her house where she needed to get ready to leave herself, and of course, pack up her puppy dog, Vixey. While we were at Davon’s, her boyfriend called. He was planning to renovate their bathroom that weekend and was on his way to get supplies. He asked us to take various measurements of their bathroom and send them to him so he knew what, and how much he needed to buy.
Then, at just after 2, we were on our way. Calgary bound.
Many conversations, sing along sessions, and so much laughter took place in her Tucson on our journey. Vixey kept poking her head between us from the back seat, wanting to be closer to her two human friends.
Before our trip began, we planned to stop off in Red Deer. Davon knew of a beautiful spot with many trails to explore, and that being something we’re both into, we knew would make for the perfect addition to our weekend frenzy. So, in Red Deer we stopped.
Davon had me GPS the spot from her phone, and we parked in a nearby neighbourhood. We gathered our belongings and got out of the car. Davon then went to her back seat to grab her pup, and I met her on her side of the car. As I said, “your keys are still on the back seat,” she shut her car door. And then all the doors locked.
There were a few moments of silence. I’m pretty sure we were both holding back giggles and panic. But despite the first seconds of anxiety, we both were very calm about the situation as a whole. It quickly turned into a joke. Davon called the nearest locksmith who informed her it would be around an hour and a half before he was able to meet her at her SUV. Which ended up working perfectly, (or as perfectly as it could given the circumstances,) because that was exactly how much time we intended to explore.
The trails were absolutely breathtaking. The scenery was perfect, as if it were created directly from a storybook, and the paths twisted and turned, winding us through a lavish, thick forest. Vixey was amazing. Davon had her off-leash, and Vixey never strayed too far. But it was easy to see she was having the time of her life. We stopped by a pond to let Vixey swim and cool off. I love watching that pup swim! She is adorable in the water. Her face always looks frantic, but she loves the water so much.
Vixey was excited over every new smell, and every new divot in the paths to explore. Just watching her little travels was more than enough entertainment!
On our way back, we stopped in a field to play fetch. We sat under a big ol’ tree that provided plenty of shade, and Davon threw Vixey’s little orange ball over and again until Vixey was completely tuckered out!
We got back to the Tucson just in time for the locksmith to be just finishing up. The timing was stupid smooth, and we were quickly back on our way to Calgary. (Of course, stopping for more coffee before the highway!)
We arrived in Calgary some time between 7 or 8 pm. We had some issues with the original hotel we had a reservation in, and ended up staying in the Sheraton Cavalier instead. The unfortunate part was that it ended up costing us double what the original reservation would have. But... We had a place to rest, and that was good enough. But we both had absolutely horrendous sleeps!
After a supper at McDonalds, scrolling through photos of puppies online, and setting up Vixey’s place of slumber, we decided it was time for lights out. For whatever reason, we either couldn’t find, or the Cavalier didn’t have a fan in the bathroom. We needed white noise so Vixey wouldn’t be kept up by the noise of other guests, (and because it helps tremendously with sleep,) so Davon cranked the A/C so we could have that sound.
The air conditioning unit, besides the beautiful whisper of a fan, also ticked... Occasionally. Just enough that it was annoying. The ticks happened pretty regularly, but not in an exact pattern. So every time we were just about to drift off, a tick would wake us up again. And again, and again... On top of that, we’re both pretty sure that every guest on our floor knew each other and were there for some kind of gathering of sort. Children ran up and down the halls... Doors opened and closed.... Feet stomp, stomp, stomped down the hallway... And after midnight, some drunk man walked the halls calling, “room service!” All of the activity also made it very difficult to fall asleep. And once I was asleep, the pain in my neck and back kept abruptly awakening me. Just for that extra bit of annoyance, of course.
When we did wake up to our alarms, (at 5 in the bloody morning,) our room was indescribably freezing. I mean, I’m certain frost was forming in my nostrils! It was unreal. So all in all, just the worst sleep! Davon and I were both at the point of over tired where everything was hilarious. I had cotton mouth and my eyes felt like sandpaper. I knew I was in for a very long day.
We checked out of our hotel at 6:23 am. We stopped again at McDonalds and each got ourselves the largest coffee available. We then went to a nearby Husky to pick up ice for our cooler, drinks and snacks. Then off to the trial we went.
The disc trials Vixey takes part in are called, “UpDog.” (Ha ha HA ha hA ha.)
We got to the field, found ourselves a little spot, carried all of our things over to it, set up, and signed in. Davon received a little care package for Vixey filled with toys and treats and such. It was very generous and extremely appreciated!
Those trials for me are like heaven because there are beautiful dogs and puppies everywhere! It is amazing. My heart and my soul can hardly handle it.
Vixey competed in a few different games, and she did incredibly! I love watching her run and jump and play. It makes my heart smile. My favourite thing to watch her do, of course, is her freestyle routine. Davon spends a lot of time with Vixey on a regular basis, and Vixey knows all sorts of cool tricks! So it’s really cool getting to watch her show off all that she can do.
Davon is an incredible dog owner, and watching her do all of these things is amazing to me. I’ve been around since the beginning, and it just continues to fascinate me.
The day of the trial was very, very hot. It got up to about 33 degrees celcius (with dry Alberta air and zero wind) by about 3pm. It took every ounce of energy completely out of Davon and I. At different periods of time, we both felt dizzy and nauseated due to the heat. Despite the lathered sunscreen, I have burns on the top of my head and on my thighs. There was a small bit of shade under a cluster of little trees away from the field, and whenever we had the time, Davon and I would walk over to it and take a few moments to cool down. We took ice cubes from the cooler and ran them over our bodies. I mean, it was HOT.
Vixey was well taken care of through the heat, though. Don’t you worry. Davon had a crate set up for her with a blanket draped over it. She even put an ice bag inside of it under a towel for Vixey to lay on. When I reached my arm inside of it, it felt significantly cooler than the air outside. I wanted to crawl into her crate for a while!
But Davon and I ended up leaving early because of the heat. During Vixey’s last game, Davon felt especially dizzy, and knew that for all of our sakes, it was best we took off.
So we packed up all of our things, chugged back a bunch of water, cranked the air conditioning in her SUV, and drove off. We stopped at Tim Hortons for a salad. It was honestly the perfect snack in that moment. After we’d finished, we drove back onto the highway headed home.
We stopped again in Red Deer on the way, stopped at the same field, and played fetch with Vixey one last time.
Before we got home, we stopped to pick up Subway and beer. We ate our supper and had a brewskie each before parting ways to rest. We were both unbelievably exhausted, and sleep felt so wonderful after such a day!
Davon woke me up today at about noon. I grabbed a coffee and woke up on my deck hanging out with my whole family, which is a rare thing these days. It was really nice.
Davon and I spent some time in our back yard looking at clouds for shapes, playing with Vixey, and giggling at our conversations.
We drove into town at night for some supper. We used Snapchat to interact with  random people. We spent time with my dad in his garage.
About an hour ago, Davon and Vixey finally went home. (I was not at all ready for them to leave. I could spend every minute of every day with them and never get bored of it.) Overall, it was an amazing weekend! I hope there are many more like it to come.
