Watching CRA really is a mixture of “it’s super important that a film made by Asian-Americans with an all-Asian cast can do well in a western market because this sets a precedent for the industry that Asian-American films are worth investing in and making” AND “yikes, there are a lot of issues with this movie and we can’t simply talk about it in terms of general (east) “Asian” representation without also acknowledging all the poor representation issues with south and southeast Asians, not to mention the completely unnecessary blaccent” AND “the family relationships and dynamics, especially in relation to diaspora as well as intergenerational differences, really strike a chord with a lot of audiences, particular those with diaspora heritage” AND “hmm, not the strongest story, could be better written,” AND “hnnng Gemma Chan” AND “why did this film have to be the big Asian-American film,” AND “oh, I know that song!  super cool to hear Chinese pop songs from my childhood when I’m sitting in a North American theatre” AND “do I want to be Gemma Chan or marry Gemma Chan”-
