I'm quite curious about "what's a riftdale" tbh

okay i saw this notif pop up and i'm gonna go to bed after this but i rly like this project so fjdksalfds. even if i haven't worked on it in a while. i really need to lmao

i am putting this under a cut again as i am Full of Words!

SO basically. if you know me (as many of you do, i assume) you almost certainly know that one of my special interests is a podcast called Tales From Riftdale (linked bcus it's a good podcast) and you also probably know that i love to talk about my special interests. i am, slightly less commonly known fact, also just really fucking bad at explaining thing on the fly in a neat manner

"what's a riftdale" itself is basically a video outline/script for that purpose! i want to go into what riftdale is, what it's about, and some of its history bcus i think it has a fun "backstory" of sorts and there's a lot of fun easter eggs and comparison points if you know about the chronicles that came before the tales. i will also take any opportunity to use the hellweenie clip bcus it makes me laugh every fucking time jfkldasf (and the cuck clip. yes i am linking both. yes you have almost certainly seen at least one of these before if you've ever talked to me)

(it's also set up so that, once i get around to finishing it, i can make + publish the video along with a content warning doc just to catch like, flashing lights and eye strain and high pitched noises and some other common heads-ups bcus those are not infrequent, and tfr has a not insignificant amount of memory manipulation going on which i know not everyone is super down with)

there's not a lot yet bcus i've been meaning to rewatch/relisten to the entire series to better flesh out my outline and doc + ensure i have the full context for giving a recommendation, bcus there's kind of like. three ways to consume riftdale and i think all of them have their merits? obv i can only speak to my experience but i want to all of the options on the table. also i'm realizing now post ep 13 there's a whole other thing i can talk about, shit. i should work on that

Emma’s 2021 BDRP Resolutions!

Write your RPer Resolutions for 2021! (What are some goals for yourself as a writer? Improve descriptions? Plot with more members? Etc.)

I’d like to get better at planning long-term and having arcs supported by different mini-stories. I started doing this with Tiana and her restaurant which was a good exercise, but I want to challenge myself to take on less tangible goals as well if that makes sense and finding ways for different characters to get involved in that journey. I think throwing characters together just to see what happens can be a lot of fun and lead to really great interactions, but I’d also like to think more about all the development potential an interaction can have and really jump on that.

I’m also always saying this, but I want to get more comfortable/confident with plotting. Sometimes I feel like I really need to have a fully fleshed-out idea before I approach someone which can lead to me just giving up before I even try because I haven’t fully developed the idea. I want to find a balance where I’m bringing something to the table with plotting but I’m not psyching myself out just because I don’t have a full-blown idea. Because sometimes I think it’s okay to say here’s a vague goal I have, here’s how I think it could work with our characters, let’s see what happens! And overall I just wanna get better at approaching people I don’t write with as often.

Phineas: Be less freaking selfish! Lol I feel like Phineas’s problems tend to stem from his Main Character Syndrome. Like the kid seriously thinks everything is about him. Honestly, I don’t want to delete that trait from Phineas because I think it is a very important part of his personality. But I want him to seriously reckon with it, see the damage it can cause sometimes and understand that even with the best of intentions, some things just aren’t about him.

Tiana: Learn to rely on other people more! I think the knights can offer this opportunity which is why I wanted to get her involved with them, and I’d also like to see her learn to lean on her staff and the Princess House :) She’s pushed a lot of people away over the years working toward her goal, and now that she’s achieved it, I want to see her navigating relationships and all the messiness that comes with them. Because opening yourself back up is rewarding but it is not uncomplicated!

Aquata: Find a purpose in life other than swimming! That dream is dead! It’s gone! Rest in peace, she is never going to be on the national team and she’s gotta learn to live with it! I’ve spoken to a few people about this but I wanna see her really get involved with Magick rights and dig into her mer-heritage a little bit. Because it’s such a big part of her identity that she’s always sublimated into swimming and I’d love to see her explore it separate from her world as a swimmer.

Henry: I want to do more Order stuff with him. I’d like to set him on a wild goose chase where he totally pursues the wrong person, I think that would be a really fun plot because the exact person he’s trying to stop is RIGHT in front of him!! And he doesn’t even realize and I love some good dramatic irony. 

Ev: I really wanna get some bigger plots moving with her and really shake things up because that was my goal with picking her up initially. I have some stuff in the works but I think I can do more with reaching out to people and planning long-term stuff. And I want her to face the aftermath of her plans: the excitement at seeing it all come together and the guilt of knowing it hurt people, even if she thinks it’s for a greater purpose.

Anna: This is weird because I JUST got her but yeah I’m just excited for college plots! Finding herself! I’ve been thinking about doing some kind of mean girls thing with her bc I think she has Cady Heron parallels lol and I’d love to put her in a situation where she has her loyalty tested. And I also want her to learn to EXPRESS her ANGER. She can get pissed off sometimes but he has this tendency to censor herself when it’s people she cares about. I want her to FIGHT.

Write at least one resolution IN CHARACTER for your characters. What do THEY want to accomplish or change in the New Year?

Phineas: Launch Something Big. It’s the last year before he starts college and he’s running out of time to be a child prodigy!!! Oh no!!! What will he ever do!!! Maybe it’s his first business. His first podcast. His first Ponzi scheme, who knows?? (That is a joke Phineas is not starting a Ponzi scheme). But give him something to try at and fail at!

Tiana: Get situated with the knights, keep making Tiana’s Place a success.....maybe find love?

Aquata: Improve Swynlake. Make it a better place for people to be out Magicks. Improve the environment. Get shit done on Board!!! And stop being weird around Vidia lol

Henry: Figure out what the hell happened on December 21 2020. Hunt down the Unseelie Creatures that Plague the Night. Keep Ashleigh happy <3 Mostly, though, Henry feels like he’s been slacking in his mission and he wants to get back on track.

Ev: Organize a big disaster, preferably taking advantage of cursed people. Gather as much intel about Swynlake as possible. Stop dragging my feet and make it happen!!

Anna: MAKE NEW FRIENDS!! She is so desperate. Fall in love <3 Figure out what the hell actually happened between Elsa and her father and why Elsa never talked to her before now. Make the most of uni :)

List one or more characters you have never interacted with that you would like to do so

Reza!!! He’s on Board with Aquata and has a similar platform. I think they could really work together and I would love to find a way for them to interact.

Ting Ting!!! How am I a Ting Ting stan and I’ve never interacted with her. Tragic. Obv she probably deserves some space rn with all the drama but at some point I would really love to work with her unique form of magic 

Tink!!! She’s got such an interesting story and I want to interact with more fairies in general. 

ROBBIE. Swynlake’s currently only known vampire!! I think he and Henry could be really interesting.

Plotting Exercise! Pick one of the resolutions/goals in #2 and plan a rough guideline to how you could accomplish it. Here’s an example. EXAMPLE OF A MOCK PLOT: HENRY’S WILD GOOSE CHASE

Self Para: Before going back to school, Henry has a talk with his father who tells him that while he knows he is capable, if another widespread Unseelie attack occurs, it’s going to look very bad for him and he needs to figure out what happened.

therefore...

Para: Henry hears loud screeching that keeps him up at night that he concludes must be a banshee. He goes to investigate and runs into KOVU, who is coming back from a “late night walk” and ropes him into helping him search. They don’t find anything, but they are able to trace the sound to DEVYN’s room.

therefore...

Para: Henry ropes ROSE into helping him do research in the library, despite the fact that they are on... not great terms following Rose and Tom’s breakup, by convincing her that there is dark magic afoot in the dorms. Upon some research, Henry starts to doubt that the sound he is hearing is really a banshee, but his options are either admit he is wrong or double down.

therefore...

Para: Henry corners DEVYN at a Student Union outing and tries to ask him if anything weird has been going on, if they are hearing any weird noises or seeing strange omens. DEVYN is understandably confused, setting off some confusion magic. Henry, not understanding the confusion magic (and affected by it) becomes absolutely convinced that Devyn’s death is being foretold by a banshee. 

therefore...

Para: Henry and ROSE camp out all night and discover nothing, but sometime late into the night, they the sound again. They break into DEVYN’s room only to discover it’s no banshee, but just the music he’s listening to while studying late into the night. Henry is embarrassed.

Trigger Warning: Depression, Suicide

These things are important to talk about. So here I am, hoping that someone can relate.

I am not actively suicidal, but a shit ton of issues have popped up in the past month - primarily a medication switch that led to a baaaaaad reaction - leaving me plagued with suicidal thoughts. They come and go over months and years, but over the past few days they have been constant.

Depression is not me, and it’s not you either, if you’re suffering from it. Mental illness IS physical illness - there is a physical, chemical imbalance going on in that brain of yours, but it does not define you, just as cancer doesn’t define the cancer patient. It requires care, just like a broken leg needs mending.

I find it easiest to talk about my experience with depression by personifying it. It’s like the cartoon angel and demon on either shoulder. The depression is the demon, obvs, but I have angels - when I had a breakdown today I had friends who embraced me with open arms. They didn’t ask any probing questions (been there in the past) or look at me like I was broken (has also happened). They held me and I hadn’t felt that loved in a long time. Like yeah, I hug my parents every day, but they’re, like required to love me, y’know? It’s in their job description (I know that I’m very lucky in this regard). My friends though? They chose to accept me. It’s an incredible feeling. I absolutely adore them (one of them has a tumblr - hi! ❤️).

Back to depression though, my old friend who has been kickin’ it with me for almost 13 years now. This is what it’s like, having suicidal thoughts but not being suicidal. I hope that by sharing this I can either help people understand or make someone out there feel less alone, that they aren’t the only person dealing with this.

Depression: Hi.

Me:

Depression: See those cars? They’re awfully fast.

Me:

Depression: If you stepped out there... a couple feet...

Me: No. That would hurt.

Depression: Only for a minute. Then you’d be free. No worries, no stress.

Me: OR I could survive and be left in immense pain, paralyzed, and cause intense emotional distress to those I care about.

Depression: They’ll get over it.

Me: Shut up. I’m going to work.

SUNDAY

Me: *playing Sims, listening to podcasts*

Depression: *slides in beside me on a swivel chair* Wasssssup?

Me: Good lord. No. Let me design this house. Let’s see, I think I’ll build the twin’s room over -

Depression: Carbon dioxide poisoning is supposed to be painless. Or is it monoxide? Eh, either way, you just have to go to the g -

Me: I’m not doing this right now. I’m busy. I’m happy. I’m content. Bye.

Depression: You’re content now, yes. But later? Things could get worse. Hit the escape hatch!

Me: I don’t want to. I like my life. Sure, I wish I made more money and didn’t have such a sucky commute but overall things are the best they’ve ever been. I have friends. I belong.

Depression: Well, I’m here to liven up the party. *throws skull-shaped confetti* Hey wouldn’t it be cool if Sims could commit sui-

Me: Holy shit! What the hell? No! Where did that even come from? That’s horrible? Get out of my head, NOW! You don’t even get an eviction notice. You’re disgusting. Leave. Now.

MONDAY

*went to therapy, acknowledged these issues, cried in front of therapist which I have NEVER done in the 10 years I’ve been going to therapy, basically shut down for the day*

TUESDAY

Me: I have work today. I love my job. Things will get better when I get there. I’ll have other things to focus on, friends to make me laugh.

Me: *walking into work from parking garage*

Depression: Wow, look! This has quite a few levels. You could easily walk right up to the roof and fall down. It’s pavement below, you’d feel nothing! It would be so fast!

Me: No. I don’t want to die. I want to live. I love my life, but I hate you. Plus, I don’t want to cause pain to the people I love. Or, you know, survive that fall and end up worse off.

Depression: Aren’t there stairwells in your building that go up to the roof? It’s even higher!

Me: No.

Depression: Yes.

Me: No.

Depression: Jump.

Me: No!

Depression: Go on, walk up the ramp, the stairs, the elevator, so many options!

Me: I said NO. STOP.

Depression: Go up there and jump.

Me: NO STOP.

Depression: DO IT. JUMP.

Me: NO!

Me:*I make my way into my building, where there’s a high balcony overlooking the lobby*

Depression: You could jump from there?

Me: No no no no no.

Depression: Or those stairs over there?

Me: No no no no.

Friend: Are you okay?

Me: *is numb on the outside bc this shit is rambling in my head*

Me: *wants to tell them what’s happening but also doesn’t want to burden them and wants to get through this on my own, I can do this, I can do this*

Friend 2: You okay sis?

Me: *silent*

Me: No no no no!

Depression: *echoing its demands*

Friends: *being genuinely incredible human beings*

Depression: You’re such a drag on them -

Me: No! No! Get out of my head!

Me: *runs and locks self in bathroom to try to calm down*

Depression: You could try drowning yourself in the toilet...

Me: NO GET OUT GET OUT GET OUT!!!!!

... and that’s when I lost it and had to leave.

Those weren’t my thoughts. I had no control over them. It’s like staring at a keyboard and watching it type for you even though you aren’t touching the keys or even thinking about what to write, it just happens.

Again - I am not actively suicidal. These thoughts do not have control over me. They do, however, take a toll, as it’s a constant battle.

Davao is the southernmost city in the Philippines, and around 3rd most populous city in the country. We had a Chiang Mai friend who recommended it for a live/work option, mainly because it's not very touristy. So we decided to check it out as our first time living in the Philippines. The biggest downside for internet people (esp video ppl) is the wifi is like DSL speeds everythere, so not ideal for uploading video. Other than that, we love the Philippines, it's a great switch-up from Thailand/Vietnam. A whole new spice and culture!
