There’s something interesting about Thorin during his goldsickness, in the way he’s both volatile and vulnerable. He’s more walled off and emotionally twisted up than ever, but he’s also more exposed. It’s like the final evolution of a game monster, where they’ve formed this armor all over them, but there is a giant glaring weakness to exploit as well. Like a giant eyeball… or a lost scale exposing soft flesh I suppose. He’s both pulling the curtain back and wrapping it around himself. It’s a fascinating and heartbreaking development, as he simultaneously betrays everything he stood for and reaches his inevitable conclusion.

#thorin oakenshield #the hobbit #this may not be entirely coherent but I’ve been thinking about it. goldsick Thorin is so emotionally heart wrenching #I’m one of those people that liked the way the movies handled his change bc I also read it that way #I was reading in between the lines and maybe I was imagining what wasn’t there but. in my defense many Tolkien scholars seem to agree #when I first read the book I never though Thorin’s sickness wasn’t without its magic and inevitability.#it was as much a choice as it was a prophecy
