hey i was just wondering why you dislike finn so much? no judgement just genuinely curious
Thanks for asking, nonny!
He’s far from my least favorite character. It’s good to criticize the bad aspects of characters every now and then, that’s what my posts today were meant to do. I will say that even though Finn is a mediocre white dude from the midwest, Glee does a really good job with making his character interesting. He could’ve easily been the most boring person on the show (like how they did with Ryder).
Under the page break is my criticism on Finn’s homophobia and violence towards Brody:
The textpost about him dressing as Lady Gaga was less of a jab at Finn and more towards RIB tbh. They set up that scene showing Finn as Kurts savior, because apparently gay people can’t stand up for themselves (Thank you Chris Colfer for having Kurt save himself in Prom Queen). Overcoming homophobia is not a one & done thing. The show could’ve had Finn have an ongoing thing with learning how to accept Kurt, but they chose to do it all in one episode and act like Finn was an angel after that.
In Duets, Finn is painted as the hero of the episode. Especially when Burt took Finn’s side in the whole situation. Finn “saved” Sam from being bullied despite having very homophobic reasons behind it all. Sam wanted to sing with Kurt, but Finn was afraid he would leave the Glee club for “looking gay.” (which we know Sam wouldn’t do bc he’s an actual angel). I will point you towards this hilarious post made by @angelhummel
In this episode, Kurt and Sam call him out on his bs but it’s brought right back around to them. Finn says that Kurt was creepy last year, excusing his concerns for the duet & he tells Sam that he’s trying to help him not get bullied. RIB wants us to be on Finn’s side, especially when they show Kurt “coming to his senses” and breaking off the duet. They want us to think that Finn was right all along and was trying to break up the duet out of the goodness of his heart, not because he was homophobic.
Don’t even get me started on the lack of discussion of Finn’s homophobia when he outed Santana.
Now, the scene where he beats up Brody is gross but I can’t help but laugh when he says “stay away from my future wife.” Let’s look past the unintentional comedy of that line. Why did Finn beat Brody up? Was it because he was a sex worker or because he wasn’t truthful to Rachel?
If it was the former, that is disgusting. Sex work is real work and glee made it seem like it’s okay to abuse sex workers. The amount of violence against sex workers is astounding and that scene only makes light of that. They could have had an actual discussion on how many sex workers are abused & the trauma they experience from it, but they decided to turn it into an “awww look at how much he loves Rachel” moment. Here’s a link if you want to learn more about the violence against sex workers.
The latter is also disgusting. Finns forgetting that he slept with Rachel while she was dating Brody. Finchel isn’t innocent in this situation. We’re expected to hate Brody and root for Finn because he became the hulk, which makes no sense. Violence is not cute but RIB wants us to fawn over Finchel because he was willing to beat up somebody that Rachel was dating.
