while we’re talkin abt whitewashing on my blog i wanna give young/inexperienced white artists some vocab…
first of all, you can take preventative measures against whitewashing in your art. use references, follow tutorials on how to draw characters of color, see if the content creator has made a color palette for fan artists to use! all that stuff is out there and very helpful if you can slow down and look at it before putting stylus to tablet.
but after that, if & when someone does point out whitewashing in your art, you’ll probably feel tempted to either push blame onto the character design, or protest a lot about how hard it is to draw features unlike your own when you’re not used to it. instead of doing that, some things you can say are — thank you. sorry for not seeing that. i’m fixing it and reposting. i’m still working on my color control/same face/making my art style less centered on white features.
it’s ok to admit that, it’s good for you to be corrected, and calling you in like that took energy for the person who spoke up, energy that is likely in short supply if it’s coming from a poc in an online fan/artist space. so keep it classy! remember this is a favor to you, not an insult, even if it feels like one.
#this isn’t abt my vague post but about direct call-ins#&#i’m def not above making blunders now but this is the advice i’d like to give myself as a teen starting to post art online#so i hope it doesn’t feel holier than thou to share#pocket talk#not about gaming
