it's always kinda depressing when I make a post about real people and their actions in real life only for the post to collect a bunch of tags from people relating it to their OCs or other fictional characters. like you guys have gotta make some real life personal connections and learn about actual irl experiences rather than picking this stuff up through a lens of fiction.

Discussing ( again) if A Frozen Heart is canon.
Tumblr media
To talk about it i m gonna talk about the many fair issues point out by fans in the book to doubt the book is canon.
No chris buck and lee approval.
I think the most likely scenario here is that a frozen heart belongs to all that stuff disney makes and planned when a disney movie come out it most likely they plan it since 2013 and since that book is the movie. It just retell it with Hans and Anna thought disney didnt think that book needed jeenifer lee and chris buck approval. It retell the movie but Without changing thing just putting stuff. Like for example i dont think they wait for Linda woolverton approval. When they publish novelization of maleficent (2014) same for pirate of the careebean.  As for the backstory what is mainly new mabe disney give directive to Elizabeth rudnick it was establish that Hans had a not good life in his Homeland and luckyly it fit with jennifer lee words later. I just dont think disney makes a big deal about Hans bacsktory. On the contrary of the fans who analyze everything and are supiscious of Hans life in his homeland. Disney seems to not makes a big deal about that. For them its clear their character got a shit life.since they publish the short comic with little Hans having scraps of his brothers food in disney storied place. that seems to be canon for them.
inconsistency
Visual inacuracy
I tried to makes research in how many times time a book get publish. And its around 2 years. Traditional publishing take around 24 month. So october 2015 ? Thats move us to october 2013. So thats is most likely this book was wrote in 2013 when the movie didnt even come out. It will be faithful to elizabeth rudnick interview who said in it disney send her script and didnt even have the visual to work it. Thats is one of the issues she adress in her interview talking about fans who had issues with thing that are not right. So i think thats give us a solid explication as why hans eyes turn blue and sitron turn white.
"One of the hardest thing of novelization of a film script is that it changes no matter what the script i get it never gonna be the script that goes that you see on the film and There is a lot of time i Will get review and poeple will be there thats different from the movie and well i didnt have acess to the final script. So i get i mean they tried to give me the shooting script they tried and its very rare for me to get images or visual and i have To thought about whats going on in the script when there is an action scene i have To be hoping that what i m describing will reflect what is on the film. When i try to describe character outfit and expression i dont necesserarly know" ( 2019 interview can be find on youtube)
2- age
The age of hans 23 years old was talk in november 2013 in a jennifer lee tweet where she said she think Hans is 23. This is possible that Elizabeth rudnick has maybe finished writing the manuscript after fixed stuff like sitron name who was confirm in september 2013 by lee but didnt fixed the age maybe didnt knew jeenifer lee has give an age on her Twitter. In the encyclopedia of disney i found one day hans information said he had 12 older brothers and that his horse name is sitron so the horse name of hans seems to be very official stuff nothing at disney nothing is said about his age
Scene that were added.
While going thought the Elizabeth rudnick tag on twitter Someone said about maleficent a cut scene was in the book and the person was glad it was supress on the movie. It is possible that scene who was added where part of the script disney give to Elizabeth rudnick was not part of the movie at the end. (I think thats when Hans talk to the diplomat before talking To the duke) it is also faithful to what Elizabeth rudnick said she dont have the final script.so in the end the inconstitencies are more here because of elizabeth rudnick actually works for disney that here because she didnt do her research
4- Arendelle southern isles/Frozen Fever
arendelle being away from the southern isles in the book. but close in frozen fever. so following what i say i think therefore this is possible the manuscript was wrote in 2013. and frozen fever i think began to be created around 2014 ? So thats could explain also this. And they miss that part.🤷‍♀️
The book is a fanfiction or its another universe.
I can understand this point about fanfiction but while doing research Elizabeth rudnick is someone that has been hire several times by disney to wrote their movies. Mulan (2020)lion king ( 2019)Aladdin (2019)A Frozen Heart (2015)Maleficent (2014)The Curse of Maleficent: The Tale of a Sleeping Beauty (2014)Mistress of Evil (2019)Thor (2011)captain america Pirates of the CaribbeanDead Men Tell No Tales (2017)Cinderella (2015)Beauty and the Beast (2017)
About the alternate The book is the movie. It change nothing but added the thought of Anna and Hans. Thats the same universe. And thats is not an anormal stuff to wrote a book from a character point of view. Divergent did it. we get to be in four head. same for the new twilight book where we are in the point of view of edward. Even from a different auhtor it will still be the same universe. so i can understand how the book can seem not canon because the woman who wrote it didnt work on the development of the character on the movie. so the argument will be more “ i dont consider this book canon because the development of the character was not wrote by the original screnwritor” and not “ i dont consider this book canon because that’s another universe”. adding thought about a character point of view doesnt make it another universe.also jennifer lee and chris buck are busy they cant wrote all the books of the franchise of frozen who has developp into a huge stuff because they are the original writor. (I read One day a team was created for that stuff.)
The book seems to be link to official information.
What makes me think that is the name of Agnarr. I read fans back in 2015 saying the book got agnarr wrong   and how they hope they are gonna fix the book mistakes in how this is not agnarr but agdar. and in the end ...well the names is actually wrote Agnarr. So the book has information the fans didnt have...weird that’s a offcial book publish by disney press and officially therefore approved by the walt disney compagny is right in how to spell the king name  and not the fans who translate it.. 🙃
.we are not sure if the book is canon
yeah i agree ! We are not sure if that book is canon to the movies. Its publish by disney press and a several people work on it. Thats a still a big stuff. I think Disney is aware About whats they publish
It is pretty solid.
"Disney Publishing Worldwide (DPW), formerly known as The Disney Publishing Group and Buena Vista Publishing Group, is the publishing subsidiary of Disney Parks, Experiences and Products, a subsidiary of The Walt Disney Company.[2] Its imprints include Disney Editions, Disney Press,[3] Kingswell,[4] Freeform, and Hyperion Books for Children.[5] It has creative centers in Glendale, California, and in Milan, Italy.[3]"
they are also the productor editor of the book also , the one that makes the cover. so i think the one in charge of the frozen franchise are actually aware about the existence of A Frozen Heart just like all of their book anyway. The one who said yes or no this is disney itself and they planned their stuff very carefully there are organized. So now imagine we are in some far far away hypotethical future where Hans go back in the franchise ? i just dont think Disney will suddenly let Hans have twins brothers names goerges and lucas. the oldest is alphonse and he got 5 nice brothers and his mom is actually the bitch and his father the loving one. i mean they seems to want to makes thing consistent in this franchise and how they are actually names of kingdoms that are the same in several stuff in the frozen franchise it seems they want to keep stuff faiftful in the franchise at the difference of other franchise like lion king.
The only detail i have see change is Anna horse kjekk who was also name kjekk in one or two others stuff and turn into havski in others material. After checking in october 2013 disney publish a book not wrote by Elizabeth rudnick a junior book where the horse name is kjekk so possible thats why they went for kjekk and thought the times they forgot they had give a name for the horse. But here Thats Anna horse not a whole new character. So that’s why i beleive ( maybe i m wrong ?) that if in some far far faaaaar away future disney want to used Hans family ( the main thing new in a frozen heart because you know the rest...is the movie) they are gonna kept  Caleb , Lars , Rudi , Runo. the name who were used. I think that’s this is most likely that what was for Agnarr would also be for Lars caleb rudi runo if we may to see them one day.🤷‍♀️
I just found that book has its credibility. it is not a independant stuff wrote by.a stranger who told a very different thing that the movie. But thats ok to just dont consider it canon because of disliking stuff in it. I personally didnt like how all the prince of the southern isles were bully to Hans.

ask from @fm-white (my asks were all fucked up before she brought it to my attention):
For the asks: 1, 4, 5, 9, 12, 13 and 16! <3
get to know me (i am an open book)
1) is there a story you’re holding off on writing for some reason?
yes and no.
in the realm of fanfiction, the kibasaku longfic i spoke about a little bit ago (based off of the true story of Martha and Waitstill Sharp during WWII where they rescued jewish children and families from the nazis) has been put on hold bc uh, well. i am a bit afraid of writing it LOL, as in im nervous i wont be able to do the plot or characters justice and i really wanna be able to have fun but also be accurate. plus, OL&W is still in works and that mf is a beast
as for original works, my novel Forge of Stars and Bones is in its second draft and i'm starting in an entirely different place than the first so its throwing me off on a lot of things. plus, this is like my favorite child, i don't wanna fuck it up. the first draft took me like 4 years to write and even then it isn't fully done, but my writing has grown so much that reading over what i had, i jsut couldn't keep writing in the same voice/tone. so! starting over! and it is hard as fuck! so im procrastinating LMFAO
(posts about FOSAB: i. ii. )
4) favorite character you’ve written
hands down: sakura. i just love her character and the way that i can use her emotional side. she deserves all the rage and anger and softness!!
og work wise: hala, she's my demon summoner mage that is someone i can relate to on an emotional level and who i just love exploring.
5) character you were most surprised to end up writing
probably lee! i always liked him in the anime but i never thought id write him but the more @lotusfartstwice and i talk about him (and his relationship with sakura) the more i want to write about him, the more i wanna dig deeper because he has unfounded potential and i love him. i was a bit nervous to write him because of his pattern of speech, but meh i can do it.
9) what, if anything, do you do for inspiration?
it depends really! sometimes a line in a song will inspire me, sometimes ill be half asleep and suddenly i can hear a beautifully written line in my head and i craft an entire story just to i can use it. or ill be hcing with someone on twitter/tumblr/in my comments and BOOM!
other times i just am hit with the need to write this certain thing. like with TIOBU, i just needed to write it and get it out there. idk why but i did, its like a tugging and nagging type feel
12) your weaknesses as an author
dialogue. i feel like my dialogue and friendship banter always falls flat and just reads too forced?? idk man, i am NOT funny irl (or on here) but my friends are hilarious so i attempt to draw on experience and simply cant. or at least i feel like its dumb idk man
also probably the way i present the story? i feel like sometimes it comes off as immature? if that makes sense? maybe inexperienced is better wording, but yeahhh
13) your strengths as an author
imagery! i think im very good at planting an image/tone in the readers head. also provoking certain feelings/drawing out emotions within my readers! i try to write from my heart and soul because i like writing with emotion
another strength would be ummm world building! i think im vv good at it (or at least i enjoy doing it LOL) the subtle drops of world while reading to slowly build up the image in a readers head while also not dumping it in one go is something i love doing, also foreshadowing :)
16) are there any characters who haunt you?
yes. there's this one character from a novel idea i had years ago. she's a celestial knight (don't ask me what it means, i have no idea!) and she has a horse??? BUT SHE HAS A MAGIC SPACE BROAD SWORD and is probably a lesbian. listen, she doesn't have a name, or personality, but the concept of her keeps me up at night. whenever i finish FOSAB (and hopefully become published then write the other planned installments of the trilogy) i would want to explore that concept.

@bumblybee:
#i used to write literal novels in elementary/middle school#my first one was a spy kids self insert fanfic that i wrote while hiding out in the bathrooms during pe bc i had a medical Thing#in like. fourth grade???#i wish i still had that one but i had to get rid of the middle school ones bc. holy fuck#also?? why the fuck cant i write that much anymore whats wrong with me Well, sounds like we had similar experiences there- my first fic was a Harry Potter one in the 3rd grade except I didn’t know about fanfiction but did know about copyrights, so it was at “Salem Magic Academy” and they got there in “motorless cars” and traveled via “Flower Powder” that you through in a doorway before stepping in. I can’t for the life of me find it, but probably couldn’t read it if I could- my handwriting circa fall 2000 was attrocious.
What I have recently found, however, was about a half dozen starts to fics/outlines from when I was in middle school and I have realized 2 things:
1. I wrote way more back then because I had a TON of time. Not only did I have limited responsibilities because I was, you know, a kid, but I also finished most of my classwork about 30 minutes ahead of many of my classmates. I had time to do things like read 2-3 400+page novels a week and write a ton of never-to-be-published fanfiction.
2. I wrote a lot of fanfiction because I was on sites like “Sink Into Your Eyes” (HP, Harry/Ginny specific) and “Twisting the Hellmouth” (BtVS, crossover central) which had (and still have?) regular challenge competitions. And I’m not talking challenges like I’ve seen on tumblr that are just a picture or a single sentence prompt, I’m talking paragraph long prompts, point scales, the full shabang! (here’s a link to one I printed out  and started working on but never finished/posted because even at 12 I felt there was no greater sin than posting a WIP without having at least drafted the whole thing). Well defined challenges can lead to more writing, for me at least.

Interview with Hazeleyedleto
Your URL:
Hazeleyedleto: https://hazeleyedleto.tumblr.com
Echelon Fiction (fanfic account): https://echelonfiction.tumblr.com
Your name: Monique
Link to your Masterlist: https://echelonfiction.tumblr.com/mystores What was your first experience with 30 Seconds to Mars? The Kill, when I was an 18-year-old, how amazing was your first time seeing the Kill? Your Favorite Mars song? Attack Has anything ever happened to you solely because of being a 30STM fan? I met my best friend <3 What is your favorite thing about the fandom? Your least favorite? Fav: no matter what I know there is always going to be a place where I fit in, I’ve never had that before Least: The bitches who think they're better than other bitches, and the daddy kink Is there any advice you would give to someone who is new to the fandom? We’re obsessive, protective but not all that bad, the bad eggs are few and far between but they are loud, try to ignore them How long have you been writing? 18 years. Why did you start writing? (Either in general or for Mars specifically) When I was 12, I had so much stationary that I didn’t know what to do with so I started one story. . . then another then another. Still, have too much stationary but am a writer so its okay Do you write for other fandoms? If so, which ones? Depends, I Like writing the Linkin Park guys and Bucky Barnes, but whatever inspires me really Do you share everything you write? If not, is there a reason why? Hmm, no. I only really share mars stuff, my non- fanfic stuff will be turned in to novels and my non-mars related stuff I don’t really have a platform to do so on. Have you written things that aren't fanfic? If so, could you tell us about those works? Many, my writing is 50/50 fanfic vs Fiction. My latest novel that I finished a couple of weeks ago ended about 85k words is about angels and demons and a prophecy that will either unite or destroy them all Of all your works, which is your favorite and why? Iridescent – (mentioned in above question) because it’s the novel that took over my whole life and kept me hostage until I wrote it from beginning to end rendering me with Stockholm syndrome to the point that I still miss them Stand Tall, They’ll Break Your Heart – first novel I ever finished. and Bright Lights – I’ve never had such a positive response from anything I’ve ever written and get yelled at because I don’t update often enough Is there one that was particularly difficult to write? Why? They’re all difficult to write. I write very emotionally driven novels, they can be draining as I take on the characters at such a personal level that I live what they tell me in a way, I’m crazy, ignore me. What is the ideal writing environment for you? At your desk? Quiet? Music? Anywhere anytime, I usually write sitting on my bed, but can literally write anywhere in any environment. Prefer loud music and a comfy place for my butt What type of fanfic are you most comfortable writing (drama, fluff, angst, drabbles, series, etc.) Mushy series filled with drama What is your favorite fanfic trope? I don’t know what that is but I THINK my answer is dramatic chicks being involved with music or rock bands Is there any trope or subject that you won't write? Daddy kink? Are there any special tools that you use when creating or writing your story? My fingers!? My stories are often inspired by songs or video clips or something like that J Do you write your story in order or do you jump around and then string it together at the end? Sometimes, especially with fanfictions. Like with Bright Lights (my biggest Mars fanfic) I have four future versions, but the reason I do that is to better understand them in the ‘bright lights’ version. Do you outline, or do a great deal of prep work or do you 'fly by the seat of your pants'? Up until my novels Attack and Iridescent I ALWAYS prided myself about being a pantser, but I really enjoyed being a planner for those two novels. How do you usually get your inspiration? Music and Video clips, sometimes dreams and other places. Do you have ideas on the drawing board or in progress currently that you haven't shared yet? Yeah, Beautiful Disaster, my bff would kill me if I wrote it though, but I have another one in the holster I am thinking about starting April 1st If you have an unpublished work in progress, please pick two to three sentences and share them without context. “Armani,” Stephanie smiled, “I trust you are well?” Mike looked between the two Angels as the embraced in a slight hug and a kiss in the cheek. Stephanie stepping back between him and Chester. “Of course,” Armani smiled. “I’m betting this isn’t a social call?” the other angel asked. “No, Armani, this is Chester and Mike,” she said pointing to the demon who owned the names. “I’ve come to make a request,” Stephanie said looking to Armani from under her eyebrows, trying to gauge her reaction. Her face was poised, it always was, but the mood in the room changed, it was now tension filled. Armani was no fool, she knew this angel was standing before her with two demons. “You will need to-” “I am a direct crown descendant ” Stephanie said. “You are also standing her with two demons,” “And you are breaking the rules,” “yeah but” “If I was willing I could turn you into ash, right now,” Stephanie pointed out. “and I would be in the right,” she told. Armani held her gaze. “now, are you going to follow the rules and grant me my appearance for request, or am I going to have to take care of things another way?” Stephanie’s lips curl upward Armani’s lip curled downward as she turned slightly. Do you like requests? Would you like more or less of them? I haven’t had any, but would be happy to take them. Is there an upcoming project from you that you are excited about? Why, and what can you share about it? I can’t wait to edit and Publish Iridescent The best piece of writing advice you've ever received? Can never pick just one Put your butt in a chair and your hands on the keyboard and something will happiness. Writer's block is just an excuse, write anything even the crap, it can always be changed later And, Aim to write every day, even just for 15mins per day, get in that habit and you will find you self-finding 5 mins or 10 mins slots more often then you realise The worst piece of writing advice you've ever received? I don’t know. Wasn’t important, was it? What piece of advice would you give to someone just starting to write fanfic? Give it ago, see how if feels, you don’t have to share it, just try. Three (stories, series, scenes, etc) written by others that you really like or that inspire you? Closer – partcually Tomo in this story, even though the whole story is fucking amazing and Black Fuel and Bikes @fyeahproudglambert Provihitofics had a story about camping, it was great she doesn’t fic no more tho
Are any of your characters closer to being “you” than others? Any reason in particular? Hmmmmm, yes I guess. The characters are all like different parts of me, Phoebe is an angry psycho which is a part I never get to express often, but there are parts of her that are not like me. Same with Helena being independent to some extent.
One thing about me is I like to find things I have in common with people, if I look hard enough, it could become obsessive.
Are any of your characters based on someone you know? Hmm a lot of my male characters look like rock stars if that counts. Are any of your plots based on something that happened to you? No, but one day Favorite font for writing? Don’t have one Do you have a 'day job'? If so, what? I am a student studying Bachelor of Social Science (psychology) with hopes to get good enough scores to get into Psychology. I am Also an Author and a qualified Mental health peer worker. Do you consider yourself a reader outside of fanfic? Yup, Your favorite book? Speak by Laurie Halse Anderson Your favorite things to do when you're not writing? What does ‘not writing’ mean? .  . . nah I like to watch Safari live, see my niece and nephew, explore the wild and hate on frogs The strangest thing you've ever eaten? My brothers used to make me eat grass stalks, oh oh CAVIAR I got told it wasn’t Caviar, it was freaking caviar Looks at @Fyeahproudglambert Two truths and a lie? I hate frogs, I’ve never met my best friend, I love the feel of fallen out hair Five albums you'd want if stranded on a desert island? Cant I just take my Spotify? I actually don’t think I can answer this? I don’t just listen to albums all the way through, . .  . This is war (plus attack and the kill) LLFD Breakaway kelly Clarkson Hybrid theory A thousand suns Something surprising about you? I have a really good memory And I usually come off as pretentious and up myself, because I am highly critical of things and probably way too opinionated, but I am actually a really nice, loyal and caring person who just wants to do good and help as many people as I can Favorite food to enjoy while watching Netflix? Anything, maybe a packet of sea salt chippies. Favorite way to spend a Saturday night? Writing Blankets Tucked or Untucked? Right side untucked, left side tucked Do you have any pets? Would you like to tell us about them? Dog, Ella - She shares my birthday, Sasha – not my dog, my brother's dog but I grew up with her and am temporarily looking after her, Cats: Ollie, Angel, Sully. I got Ollie first (After my cat Joel died) and then my brother got Angel (she was being mistreated somewhere else) Ollie and Angel bonded n such a human love type way, and we decided they could not be separated, so I got Angel too, guess what though, 9 month old cats can have babies, Angel had three Kittens, Lucky, Sully and Heat, my brother kept heat, I kept sully and Lucky went to a loving home J Musicals, yes or no? If yes, what movie/show would you like to see made into a musical? No, thank you Tell us a joke. Mars fans who hate and bitch on everything the band does Are there any particular battles or struggles in your life you'd like to tell us about? Hmm, I mean I am an open book with the things I have been through, and am happy to talk about them at any time, there are many things from abuse, abandonment, isolation, major depression, self-harm, suicidal ideology, my brother was recently in a coma ,my mother’s cancer journey, my heart issues, social phobia, PTSD, horderism and crippling self-doubt and anxiety, to tell the short story. While some things still plague me, I find all of it also drives me to make my life better, and t do the best I can every day. Life struggles are hard, but they also enrich me to not only help people in my ‘day job’ but to help me write richer stories. Anything you'd like to add? You guys are doing a great job. When I started Echelon fiction, this is kinda what I wanted it to be but I never had the drive to pull it off, I love how innovative you guys are being and changing things up getting your followers involved, its really cool! Good job, keep going

Note
(anon from last ask) Yeah gen fics or fics that may have some porn but are more about just telling a story with stuff other than romance dont get a lot of attention. So in my original stuff I focus on the friendship/comradery of the main characters they have a platonic family dynamic. An example is Voltron, I heard people threatened and attacked the creators(even threatened to leak show art) to make the ship Klance canon. Why cant characters just be friends or become couples more organically?
Well the more attention a story gets, it accumulates all kinds of fans. Some people are crazy like that.
Maybe there's also the attitude that fanfiction is not real writing? In the sense that people assume there can't be originality there bc otherwise it would be an original story, and hence fanfiction can only be about shipping or porn? Which is funny bc a lot of literature is fanfiction of other literature, and even novels that are considered canon in a fandom are written by people other than the mangaka and hence it's all fanfiction. But the attitude is that if published it must be original fiction, forgetting than fanfiction can be original. It sucks, but you still gotta write the stories you want to tell.
I use fanfiction to do a lot of world building and add OCs from the start, and treat it like extending upon a given world--I'm even thinking of turning some of my fics into longer original works bc they are so removed from the original story (they're more like spin-offs) they can easily turn into their own thing.
When it comes to romance I kinda like the idea of pairing people with the otherly: I had a human shipped with a "possessed" typewriter once, so it becomes more about what it means to feel love when all the physical aspects are removed.
Could be that what's popular makes it seem like all there is out there is romance. But original books also suffer from rush romances a lot, bc there's a belief that romance is a part of life and hence something you should include in your story. Well you don't have to, but people feel pressure to write what they think the reader wants to read. I find a similar issue when the end goal of romance is having a traditional family that includes kids...
***
FYI I have had a similar discussion on art at some point, and while art is allowed to be more gen there's a lot of popularity that comes from giving people what they want. I guess why it's always hard to go against what's established as popular, and popularity is more like a tested shortcut that mostly always works.
I unfollowed a lot of people on impulse once bc I realized I was just going for pretty art or horny art and if the art wasn't that hot--well what's the point? So I'm still curating it down to artists that I feel I can learn something from the composition of their art.

hightech.lowlife: i just hate romance being the only thing in a book (or even like, 5% of the writing) but thats all there is in gay fiction!!! and u think itll get better if u go for a genre like horror or fantasy or smth but it just gets WORSE

you cant!!
jackalloops: see also with bear shifters/werebears: grossly misrepresented bdsm (no safe words, no consent, not sane)
hightech.lowlife: why
where have all these things come from
oh right
straight women
jackalloops: (:
hightech.lowlife: also, my rec's from bookgorilla ended with a book, in the lgbt section, about a mom sending her gay son to conversion therapy camp because she's religious and 'struggling'
hasn't my day been bad enough????????????????/
jackalloops: that's not .... lgbt... .. . . . . .
hightech.lowlife: well see the whole family LEarns together and grows later and it's

i know it's out of defensiveness, but it doesnt change the fact that its annoying and i have to see it 800 times....this is my post where do these people think theyre going to get with me =_= . like i have to see every set of tags and every reply and every comment. it is exhausting. 10k notes. and i will say my problem with the colloquial usage is because by using it colloquially you are trying to use the value you ascribe to it to define my argument, when that is simply untrue. you cannot substitute "transformative" for "good"
a lot of people in the replies have also said it better than i have: the point isnt that you cant make these things AND like the work, but the mass movement towards just copy pasting characters into tropes so far removed from the source, or people who are part of the fandom without even reading the source (which. youd be surprised how common that is. bangs fist on ground) is like...how can you call yourself a fan if you discard most of the original? if you dont enjoy the original for what it is, why not just move on to something else? its so bizarre. especially for things like squid game or succession. like...i shouldnt be able to cut and paste characters from both my hero academia and squid game into the same kinds of fan content. its just BIZARRE.
i also really fucking hate the response "well just follow better people XD" my dash is fucking immaculate dude. but as one person pointed out, its not that its more people doing this, but its just SO MUCH HARDER to avoid. because of the cultural zeitgeist that is social media these days, you cant really avoid these parts of fandom even if you do what i do (i EXCLUSIVELY use tumblr (well i follow like 4 ppl on twt but i dont look at the timeline i just turned notifs on for them LOL. messy if ur out there ily <3), i block liberally, etc, etc). especially now that celebrities or actual authors have gotten in on the posting...insert that one post about how on twitter you can see a bad take and the person is a world leader or something. the fact i know theres y.a novels that are published fanfiction is like. it breaks the mind a bit. a lot of people even brag about interacting with a fandom without knowing the source material. this isnt like...me making shit up.
like...i miss the days where everything was on stupid obscure forums. but socmed is so pervasive that i cant really avoid it. not to mention that "well if you just dont like it, look away" sort of defeats the entire idea of literary and artistic criticism and is kind of a pussy move. it is only by analyzing problems that they can be confronted and solved. (also once again idk why people think its illegal to bitch about stuff online, ill stopo complaining when im dead)
Tumblr media
@dokidokidraws im @ing you in this because i hate long posts and the og rb chain is long enough. hope u dont mind. and if u do idc by the time u read this its done. and im only entertaining this bc im in a good mood and life of boris released a new cooking video
your problem isnt necessarily the technical definition you give. that's like, fine. sure. but the problem is how youre using it. youre treating transformative works/arts as an ART term, and not a LAW term. which it is.
derivitive (which is the broader category) and transformative are terms used to try and decide the legality of a piece of work. (also, transformative goes beyond the idea of fandom-- something like painting a photo belonging to someone else is considered transformative or derivitive, depending on a few criteria) in your initial argument, you posit transformative as an art term that implies the art is all Inherently Good, Deserves to Exist, and Is Immune to Criticism, seeing as my original post is just that: criticism of the art people make. (which...like....oh boy wait till you hear about what art critics do). this is not what transformative means. it just means those silly little minecraft boys cant take you to court for your work (unless that work violates some other law).
not to mention if you look at the original tags on my post and the multiple posts ive made on the matter/replies, youll find that i believe that fanwork and other releated works CAN be meaningful and show a genuine love for the text. and youll also find other people agreeing that it feels more like people are more attached to the idea of fandom than the source material, which can be incredibly disheartening to see art increasingly chewed up and spit out for the same tropes. i really dont know what to say here other than you intentionally misread my argument, proceeded to try and say that just because something LEGALLY can exist, it's automatically of a high quality, and im getting sick of repeating myself to people who come into this automatically on bad faith.
if transformative and derivitive works are art, than they are not immune to criticism. fanwork occupies an odd space in art history (due to the unprecedented nature of intellectual property etc etc whatever if i get into copyright laws and cultural landscapes we'll be here all fucking day), and im allowed to say i find it an affront to the sensibilities that people insist on dumbing down meaningful works for the sake of easily consumable content. and im sick of repeating myself can you people look in the reblogs and replies to see if fifty other losers have said the same damn thing first. i have to see these.
