Buffy The Vampire Slayer, “The Body”

Excerpted from my 2010 AV Club review.

“The Body”

I’ve experienced two major deaths in my life. In 1996, one of my best friends was murdered out in Los Angeles, where he was in the early stages of a promising acting career. I hadn’t seen him in a while or talked to him in months, and I got the news the night before I was supposed to leave on a vacation with my fianceé’s family to the Atlanta Olympics, so I didn’t go the funeral. In the years since, I’ve realized that I probably could have rearranged our schedule and found a way to go, but I was 25 years old then and insecure about almost everything, so I didn’t assert myself. Instead I spent the hours after I got the news babbling nervously and incessantly to my fianceé about my memories of my friend. I didn’t know how to process his death. I didn’t know what was appropriate.

Four years later, my dad died. It seems like a much longer stretch of time, because in the interim I got married, bought a house, moved to Arkansas and started writing full-time. And when I look back, I have to remind myself that I didn’t have any kids yet, and that I’d only been a home-owning grown-up for a few months. My friend’s death feels like ancient history to me now, but my dad’s death feels like fresh news, even though it happened a decade ago. My dad died suddenly—a heart attack, while he was taking an afternoon nap—and I didn’t have any real responsibilities after it happened, beyond driving up for the funeral. My stepmother dealt with all the arrangements, and because my dad was the pastor of a small-town Episcopal congregation, our family had plenty of support. And it wasn’t like I was that close to my father. We talked on the phone every few months, and I’d just seen him at Christmas, but there was always a little distance between us, for various reasons. Still, my most abiding memory of that time was my physical reaction. That whole week, I felt as tired as I’ve ever felt, almost like I was wearing a weighted vest. I felt like something was pressing down on me.

The remarkable thing about “The Body” is how well Joss Whedon captures those particular, eclectic reactions when a loved one dies. The episode opens with a reprise of the final scene in “I Was Made To Love You,” in which Buffy comes home on a sunny morning and finds her mother laying dead on the sofa. Joyce’s body is cold and motionless, and appears slightly out of focus in the back of the frame for a moment before Buffy sees her. Once Buffy realizes what’s happened though, Joyce’s body becomes a hard reality that Whedon keeps returning to, by cutting to shots of her on the floor, or at the morgue. The second-cruelest cut comes after a flashback to a recent holiday dinner, which ends with Joyce and Buffy dropping a pie, followed by a cut to Joyce’s corpse. The cruelest comes after Buffy imagines the paramedics reviving Joyce and everything being okay, before she realizes that it’s not. That’s the way it goes when something terrible happens to us—be it a death in the family or even something as mundane as a bad grade at school. These things preoccupy.

Whedon takes a lot of chances with “The Body,” some of which may have been ill-advised, albeit in a way that’s in keeping with the episode’s subject matter. There’s no “right” way to react to a death, or even to document one. Whedon drops the music entirely (outside of the opening and closing credits), and employs multiple techniques to replicate Buffy’s disorientation. When she rushes to call 911, Whedon goes handheld. When the paramedics arrive, the camera zooms between Buffy and Joyce as Buffy tries to determine if her mother looks presentable. (Buffy ultimately reaches over and tugs Joyce’s skirt down a little.) When a paramedic explains that Joyce probably died of an aneurysm, Whedon only shows the man from the nose down. When Buffy tells Dawn that their mom is dead, Whedon shows them at a remove, through a window, with the sound muffled. When Xander frets, he walks in and out of frame. When the Scoobies arrive at the hospital, Whedon records their sympathetic hugs with quick dissolves. Some of these shots and edits come off a little gimmicky, but the ones that work are so effective that it seems petty to complain that Whedon overdoes it at times. (Besides, different moments are likely to move different people.)

Similarly, Whedon tries different ways through dialogue and action to convey how people grapple with the meaning of “lifeless.” Some of those ways are fairly blunt, as with Dawn’s mini-arc, which sees her go from being emotionally distraught at school over some petty insult, to cheering up when she has a conversation with a boy she likes, to being so distraught over her mom that she needs to touch Joyce’s dead body in order to understand what happened. (“Where’d she go?” Dawn asks, as if wondering how her normal teenage ups-and-downs took such an unexpected turn.) And some are more subtle, as when Dawn’s art teacher asks her students to explore the negative space around their subject—a body, as it happens—just as Whedon does with this episode, showing Buffy’s characters with a Joyce-sized hole in them.

My favorite sequence in the whole episode though is one that’s a little more down-to-Earth. It takes place in Willow’s dorm room, where she frets over what to wear to the morgue—“Why do all my shirts have stupid things on them? Why can’t I dress like a grown-up? Why can’t I be a grown-up?”—while Tara, who’s gone through a death in the family before, tries to be helpful, and Xander gets so frustrated with his feeling of impotence that he punches a hole through Willow’s wall.

And then there’s Anya.

I was holding it together fairly well while watching this episode, until Anya started saying inappropriate things on the periphery of the scene, like, “What will we be expected to do?” and “Xander cried at the apartment; it was weird,” and “Am I supposed to be changing my clothes a lot? Is that the helpful thing to do?” I finally lost it when Willow blows up at Anya for not acting like a human being and Anya yells back that as a recently re-mortaled person dealing with the real meaning of death for the first time in centuries, she just doesn’t understand.

Here’s the whole speech:

I don’t understand how this all happens, how we go through this. I mean I knew her and then she’s… there’s just a body. I don’t understand why she just can’t get back in it and not be dead. It’s stupid. It’s mortal and stupid. Xander’s crying and not talking and I was having fruit punch and I thought that Joyce would never have any more fruit punch and she’d never have eggs, or yawn, or brush her hair, not ever and no one will explain….

Yes, that speech does spell out the whole point of the episode in bolded, capitol letters, which ordinarily would be a bad piece of writing. But damned if Emma Caulfield doesn’t make Anya’s frustration real. And damned if there aren’t some times when even witty fictional characters need to say exactly what’s on their minds, even if it’s “writerly.” Besides, Whedon earns the speech with all the ways he emphasizes the physical aspects of life and death throughout “The Body:” Buffy cracking Joyce’s ribs while administering CPR, and Joyce feeling no pain; Buffy grabbing some paper towels to mop her own vomit, and watching the stain spread; Dawn being stalked by in the morgue by a vampire, a creature who is dead and yet animate.

This is going to sound strange, but it’s the vomit-stain I find most compelling. Here’s this warm, oozing essence of Buffy, seeping into a neat stack of Bounty; while in the next room an entire adult woman is sprawled on the floor with a broken bone that’s not bothering her in the slightest—because the “her” that was is no more, and persists only inasmuch as she’s seeped into the people who knew her. There’s the corpse—inescapable, inconvenient—and then there’s the spirit that has completely vanished. To make out its shape, you’ll have to look at the people gathered around where it used to be. At one point in “The Body,” Dawn’s crush-object Gavin asks, “Negative space… what’s that all about?” This episode is the answer.

20 Years Ago

It’s been 20 years since that day. And just like I wrote in the only ‘memory’ referencing 9/11 on my Facebook, I don’t want to jump on a bandwagon or soapbox. I don’t want to join the throngs of people answering the question that, for those of my generation, needs no explanation… “Where were you when?”

But I can’t not write today.

For me, the where was easy. I was in Colorado Springs.

To say it’s an area with a large military community doesn’t do justice to the sentiment. The Air Force Academy, Cheyenne Mountain Air Force Stations, Fort Carson Army Post, Peterson Air Force Base, and Schriever Air Force Base are all within an hour’s drive, give or take traffic. My new husband was stationed at Fort Carson, a Cavalry Scout.

My mother called me in hysterics- which was not unusual, waking me up earlier than normal. I was working at the Olive Garden as a server. My daughter was 4 years old.

I got up, took her to daycare, and went to work. There was a TV on the same kind of AV cart we got excited about in school sitting inside the server’s station on one side. We didn’t have customer-facing televisions and this was long before smartphones were in everyone’s pockets.

Another military spouse showed up for her shift, unaware of the events. She turned around to go home. She lived on Fort Carson and didn’t get through the gate for several hours.

That evening, I was part of a small sleepover of sorts where a handful of us “Scout Wives” held vigil together- crying and waiting for some kind of news from our husbands. The post was locked down tight. We didn’t get to hold them in our arms until the evening of September 12th.

The “where” is an easy question.

I think the bigger question is “WHO were you when? And who did you become in the aftermath?

Twenty years ago, I was a 22-year-old newlywed. He was my 2ndhusband- a cute boy in a green uniform with bright blue eyes, a grin for miles, and a quirky little gap between his front teeth. He had deployed to Bosnia straight out of basic training. We met in a bar within weeks of his return to the states, around Valentine’s Day of 2001.

The day the towers fell, he still was not old enough to legally buy a beer.

I had already rebuilt my life once when I left California and split up with my daughter’s father. Our new life was just beginning, but when my mother wailed, “You just married a soldier and we’re going to WAR!” I felt it. I felt my entire life unraveling again.

We moved to Germany the following spring where he was almost immediately sent to Kosovo. It was slated to be a 6-month tour. His replacement unit was sent to Iraq as part of OIF 1, so they extended their mission to 9 months. From there, there were moves back to Colorado, a separation, reconciliation, a move to Texas, and 2 more deployments to Iraq.

By the time we separated, I was 30 years old. We owned a home and he was slated for a third deployment to Iraq. The TBI (traumatic brain injury), PTSD, migraines, and back problems were so bad that he did not deploy, and was medically discharged before his 30th birthday.

We stayed on friendly terms for another decade, but every time I saw pictures of his new life and new wife I felt all of it all over again. He still had the big grin, but the sparkle in his eyes was gone.

That man has his name, his fingerprints, and his DNA but little else remained of the boy I married all those years ago. My husband went to war, but despite coming back upright and without a flag draped over his body, he never came back.

This is one of those things that people outside the military community don’t often realize. Whether or not you wear the uniform, war changes you. Military families deal with their own stress, trauma, loneliness, and fear from having loved ones in a warzone for weeks, months, and sometimes years at a time.

Waiting for that telegraph, knock on the door, or news story that mentions their unit… that part has changed over the years but living in that constant state of dread is the same.

It’s a state of anticipatory grief… waiting for the moment when the grief process will begin and be recognized by those around you.

When the same uniform walks through the door, the rest of the world sees the happiness of a homecoming.

But for so many, that happiness is often quickly replaced with learning who the person wearing the uniform has become in their absence.

New kinds of stress, trauma, loneliness, and fear often follow.

The stress of readjusting to sharing your home. The trauma, packed neatly away in their rucksack spills out all over the floor with their gear. Then comes the loneliness when they isolate and disconnect, and fear that you will become the target of their anger.

When my soldier returned, his drug of choice was video games. I called myself a ‘PlayStation Widow’ because he would spend every waking moment outside of work with a controller in hand, often not getting up to eat, drink or even smoke. His anger was most pronounced in his road rage- yelling, swearing, speeding, and tailgating.

I learned to manage his anger with my tears.

The rage would take hold and I would take responsibility for it, trying to figure out how I could have caused it. ‘What did I do? How can I fix this? What does he need?’ Eventually, I realized that he only calmed down once I’d become so spun up into it that I’d broken down in my own panic.

Over a decade later, when my current partner, Pirate, is struggling with his mental health, my first instinct is still to take responsibility.

It’s only because of the therapy, medication, and communication, on both sides, that I’m able to acknowledge and support him without taking it on as my own.

I swore I’d never get involved with military personnel again when that marriage ended.

What I hadn’t considered is that relationships are often brought about by proximity. I’ve lived near military installations for most of my adult life- Forts Carson, Hood, Meade, and Huachuca stateside, plus 2 years in Germany.

Friends, lovers, 2 ex-husbands, and my current partner have all brought their own trauma-filled rucksacks along with them, and into my life.

They each had their own experiences and their own way of handling things.

Dirty D had a picture on his MySpace of himself crouched down, naked, pistol in hand that was taken shortly before he was hospitalized for holding the gun to his head. I was friendly with his wives and girlfriends, including the one he moved to Idaho with to live off the grid on a hand-built homestead.

Taz was working nights as a bouncer when we met. He was sent to Germany only to be medically discharged and returned to Texas because his body was too damaged from previous trips to “the sandbox” to deploy again.

The Postman shared stories he wrote about his time in Mogadishu, Somalia. You probably know that as the place where "Black Hawk Down" happened. We met while he was on leave from Iraq and he later emailed more stories to me from Afghanistan.

The Mad Scientist once talked about being with his unit early on during Operation Iraqi freedom. Food was scarce so they were only getting one MRE a day. He had a stash of candy bars that he broke small pieces off from to share with the guys in his unit that were struggling the most with hunger.

MM also experienced those lean rations and hunger along with going days on end unable to get clean. The bulk of his PTSD revolved around food and cleanliness.

We once drove over 3 hours to go to a ‘Princess Bride’ themed burlesque show. The venue said they had food, and we didn’t have time to get dinner before going to the theater. When he discovered that the concession stand was closed he had a meltdown, leaving me alone to go get a hamburger at a bar down the block.

Pirate has nightmares, crying out in his sleep and trembling so violently that our bed shakes. He was medically discharged from the Army before his unit deployed. He lives with survivor’s guilt on top of the PTSD he developed as a 5-year-old missionary kid in Kenya during a civil uprising.

And none of this takes into account the first responders, civilians, and all of their families who have been impacted by this.

Here we are 20 years later...

I just saw a video where a teacher discussed telling her students about 9/11. She explained that there were 3 targets that symbolized the very idea of America in their own way. The World Trade Center was a representation of the American economic power, the Pentagon is a symbol of military power, and the 3rd target, the Capitol is the seat of our democracy.

20 years later, the 3rd target was attacked again.

This time, the attack did not come from foreign powers but instead from home-grown terrorists, radicalized to believe the blatant lies of a spray-tanned reality TV star who is spending this anniversary as a ringside commentator at a casino boxing match in Florida. I couldn’t make this up if I tried.

We are in a politicized pandemic that quite literally almost killed my own mother last week. I’m living in the hottest city in America where we moved for a job that Pirate was fired from 3 weeks after we signed our year-long lease.

Oh, and the Capitol police have requested the fences be put back up for the “Justice for J6” rally next weekend. These 'very fine people' are gathering to show solidarity for those who literally smeared shit on the halls of our democracy.

Showing support for those arrested for assaults that left several people injured. Five people died shortly before, during, or after the event, and 4 officers who responded to the riot died by suicide in the months since.

Today there are people all over social media posting stories of where they were that day.

But others are the younger people who have been taught to “remember” an event that was little more to their personal history than a scary movie on TV. They were too young or too far removed from it to carry the same scars as those who lived through the events of that day and all that came after.

I’m glad they only have to perform the remembrance rather than experience it. But for the rest of us, I think that it is part of the healing to look back on this anniversary and say,

“I was there. I was present. That day changed my life in ways that still matter to me.”

[RF] Stories: HS Picture, Tape and VCR recording, outfit with shoes

I live in Florida and it's hot during the summer months but October of 1973 was usually warm. There were no air conditioner in the high school that my sister attended. It was also during the energy crisis. The teacher in protest of no air conditioning wore a one piece bathing suit to school and the school photographer took a picture of the teacher, Mrs. Emma Smith and standing on one side of her was my sister Vicky, on the other side was her best friend Molly and then I was sitting on the floor crossed legged. I was 11 years old at the time. My sister Vicky and Molly were seniors. We saw it in the yearbook and many people that saw it laughed.

VCR Recording

In 1982 my sister, Molly and a couple of their friends went to my mother's house for thanksgiving. A VCR tape was done of the visit. At that time those cameras and VCR tapes were expensive. Very expensive. It was watched a couple of times and then put away. We all were aware that we were being watched. Poor Vicky had been watched for years. I also forgot to mention that my mother's church had a square dance two days after Thanksgiving. That was included on the Thanksgiving tape. Vicky sent the tape to her man Captain Doc as he requested that she film Thanksgiving.

Captain Doc was her secret lover. Our father died in 1981 and shortly after that Vicky became his lover. Our dad was the head person on his security and had told her that Captain Doc broke the hearts of many women in Finland. She didn't want to believe this but it was true.

Back story: My father was born in Finland and came to the US in the 1950's. He met my mother in St. Louis, they got married, then divorced and he went back to Finland. We spent many summers there as well. I was name Maud which is my paternal grandmother's name.

Molly got married in her late 20's and had a couple of kids. She settled down, moving to Winter Park and living on Park Ave. You wouldn't recognize her previous life as she had left that life of dating wealthy European aristocrats at the age of 26. Vicky hadn't totally left it although she was devoted to Captain Doc. Few people in the US knew about it.

Once Vicky turned 30, Captain Doc traded her in for someone younger. She got a lot of money to keep her silence about their relationship. You wonder why these women don't tell. They either are paid off or given a nice gift in exchange for their silence. Vicky came home in tears.

Vicky got married shortly after the breakup and the following year had a daughter at age 35 in 1991. Our mother died in 1998 and a month later Vicky and my brother in law died in a car accident. I was given custody of my niece, Emily age 7. She inherited by sister's good looks.

Shoes and Outfit

Emily grew up and wanted to be a model/actress. At age 20 she was in her first movie. She had more talent for acting than modeling and dropped the modeling. I often would get calls or people asking who she was involved with. I declined comment. One of these people was an actor who was much older than she. The actor wasn't married but was in a long term-relationship and was known to cheat and his partner put up with it for a long time before finally leaving.

For Christmas of 2015 Emily gave me a pair of fancy Italian shoes. They were beige flats that had real rhinestones in them. She had a similar pair. I was also given a fancy green pant suit by her friend Tiffany. The two were spending Christmas with me. I felt sorry for Tiffany. She had come to Florida to escape from her troubles but her troubles came to the attention of an entertainment show that mentioned her troubles the day after Christmas. I was surprised that Tiffany wasn't getting threatening calls.

I knew Emily wouldn't be getting any calls like that. She finally told me that she'd gotten caught. The partner of this actor calmly told the actor that she would be outside in the garden and they would discuss it later. She closed the door and quickly left. When Emily left, she saw the woman sitting in the garden with the look of fury on her face. It hadn't been made public yet, but this couple had split up.

From Christmas to New Years was uneventful. Three days after the new year. A guy that Emily had dated in high school died in a crash that was caused by a drunk driver who happened to be a MLB player. Emily and Tiffany had stayed a couple of more days and left the day after the funeral.

Tape Recordings and how it all ties together

A week later

I was walking to the library when a man approached me with a gun and ordered me into my car. He told me he wouldn't hurt me if I complied. I was forced to drive home and was forced to change into my new shoes and pants suit. He had an old cassette recorder with a tape on it. He told me to record as he sat in my living room at the dinning room table. He had the gun in his hand and was sitting across from me.

"Did you know that Emily got caught with Max Fringers by his partner Jill Ann. Those shoes that you are wearing are actually Jill Ann's shoes. Max bought them for Jill Ann but Emily had bought a similar pair and when she left grabbed the wrong pair. That outfit was actually purchased by Tiffany's lover, that punk rocker........

"I don't want to hear about him. I really don't..."

"Now tell me what would Emily see in a guy like Max Fringers. The guy is much older than she is and he's not that attractive. Has a lot of money. I wonder how he is...

"Stop this right now, I don't want to hear about this." I said in a stern manner.

"Don't worry. I doubt if Jill Ann is going to come forward and tell everyone that you are wearing her shoes. I doubt that Mr. Punk rocker is going to say that he purchased the pants suit. I must tell you Maud is a hideous name for a person. Old Scandinavian name but old lady name. I'm warning you that people are going to come after you and your family over the DUI case. They will be coming out of the woodwork. They already know about dear old Captain Doc and they know that he still has a copy of that high school year book picture."

The look on my face, I tried to hide the look of panic on my face. How did this guy know this? He was too young and wasn't on the earth when Vicky and Captain Doc had their fling.

"I know what you're thinking, how do I know this? I know this and no, I wasn't send by the drunk. I just want you to know what you are up against. You don't have to answer me as I'm not a court of law."

This man gives me a DVD but I don't want to look at it. I know what is on it. "

"I don't want to see that video."

"Just letting you know this is already out. It wasn't me."

He then gets up and leaves the tape with me. I debate over calling the police as I don't want them knowing about this. I decide not to as I don't want this information about my family and friends out there but it already is. I destroy the tape and tell no one about it.

This man who comes to my house makes several old cassette recordings and sends them to the police. One is labeled HS Picture, another VCR recordings, Outfit with Shoes and the last was the tapes. We are all tied together as either being friends or relatives for the most part.

The tabloids have a field day with it. I'm on the cover dressed in the fancy Italian shoes and pants suit. The affair that Captain Doc had with my sister became headline news worldwide. Emily and Tiffany's life is made a public record including that video.

Wasn't really a music video although music was playing. Of course religious groups went crazy, attacking Emily and Tiffany as being immoral and sinful women. Some people loved it. I had to look at it once and never again. Emily and Tiffany refuse to talk about it.

The thanksgiving tape is too boring so that doesn't get much attention.

I'm dragged into it as well, served with a summons to come to court. This goes on for two years. This guy continues to send old tape recordings that he made talking about the case to local law enforcement.. I have no idea who he is. He didn't come back to my house and I hope I never see him again. I never told police that he came by. Sounds strange but this is our little secret.

Then something weird happens. This MLB player goes out on a boat and never returns. The man on the tape claims to be responsible for his disappearance and says that he's with the fishes at sea or at the bottom of the sea.

For nearly 25 years afterward, police get these recordings. They become very political in nature. Sometimes the man is very angry. Other times he's very calm. He often mentions me which angers me. Sadly some of the stuff he's said about the town I live is true.

A sample of this would be.....

"Maud doesn't fit it. Ugly name wouldn't you say. Strange odd woman is what the folks in town described her as. I think she's different but what would the world be if everyone was the same. No she doesn't fit into the town because first of all, she lives in the wrong neighborhood, goes to the wrong church and this makes you a social outcast in the town. Why she stayed here, I guess she doesn't have to worry about someone doing her harm as she as middle aged obese. The fat sister you know everyone knows one or has one.....

"Have you ever wondered why women who date royals or nobility never write a tell-all-book? Because they know bad things will happen to them if they do. I would have to admire Vicky for not saying anything about Captain Doc who everyone knew didn't love his royal virgin bride. Need I say more. Molly dated the Scottish nobleman who couldn't marry her and she wasn't about to be a kept woman.. She went home and made a normal life for herself. The nobleman's family was nice to her. Didn't badmouth her and said little about her. She was nice but wasn't of the right stock (non-nobility in other words)....

A far cry from what happened to Thelma Thompson. The family of this nobleman hated her with a passion and threatened to ruin her life if she said anything. She was used if you know what I mean. But she did get a parting gift as all these women did. The other 2 women weren't threatened. Thelma was but I'm telling her story because she died last year and she was living in a halfway house. She told me all about what happened, including two miscarriages that she had. Well they weren't miscarriages if you know what I mean. Molly paid for her funeral and made sure she had a proper burial. No one else seemed to care. Molly is a decent person an I've always liked her even though I don't know her personally."

I vaguely remember Thelma. She didn't go to school in Florida and my sister and Molly met her at a party in London. These are where these rich wealthy men hung out to pick up women the kind you didn't take home to Mother as Rick James would say. Vicky and Molly weren't passed around because of who they dated. The men that they dated made this clear. Vicky and Molly were theirs and no one elses until they broke up with them. Thelma was passed around and I will leave it at that. Poor Thelma nearly OD's on pills after she was discarded like garbage.

I never had to go to court. The tape that this guy gave me never turns up anywhere.

The tapes then stopped being sent. What happened? My guess is that this guy died. Despite officials begging the man to come forward, he never did. What his motive was, I don't know. Maybe he felt sorry for Emily losing a ex-partner. Many of the tapes were leaked to the police.

OK, so I got my car insurance renewal to start on 16 May, and it went up from 40 a month to 60, for no gosh darned reason. Grrr. I know that the insurance has gone up a lot, and I think they blame the compensation claims for this, but up a THIRD! Jeeeeeez! Last year, it went up from 35 a month to 50 and I had a whinge down the phone at them, and they reduced it to 40 by changing the recovery a bit (I don't get help now unless I am more than a mile from home; but the chances are I would be when I broke down anyway, and even if I was half a mile away, I could walk back!) so I agreed to change that. So I rang them today and they said they can lower it a fiver because I am a 'loyal' customer, (so down to 55 a month.) Big deal!
