It was another busy day at the cafe, people coming in to order their usuals as they made their way to work, school, or elsewhere. You lose yourself in the art of making their drinks, the familiar task giving you a sense of comfort.
You definitely needed comfort after a recent breakup, the wounds so fresh, you could still feel your heart rip in two at just the thought. You were in need of some healing and your friend, Ember, knew just the activity that will help.
Every Friday, the cafe you worked at hosted poetry night where others can spend their evenings sharing their original works or reciting works of some of poetry’s greatest authors.
You loved poetry, loved getting lost in the words of those who walked this earth centuries before you. The works always incited emotion, your eyes welling up in tears, or scowling in anger at the passion of the writers.
You also loved listening to others, as they poured their heart out through words, weaving their stories through happy narratives or euphemisms.
While you were dating your ex, your passion for poetry dimmed, finding no comfort from the words on the page as your love for the stories was berated and considered worthless.
You sat aside your poems in exchange for the thought of love, burying the feeling of hopelessness deep within your heart.
Now that you were free, you started engaging in poetry reading again, getting lost in the words once more, your smile returning as you found some comfort from them. Ember suggested you start going to poetry nights, so you could get out of the house, meet new people, and of course engage in your ultimate love.
At first, you weren’t keen on the idea, having not gone to an event like this in years, but overtime you changed your mind, deciding it was exactly what you needed.
So you busied yourself in your work, counting down the hours until the end of your shift and when you could take a seat and enjoy the entertainment of the night.
Time passed, people came, drinks were made. Before you knew it, you were clocking out, taking off your apron and setting it on your hook. You fixed your outfit in the bathroom, then went in search of your friend, hoping she had already arrived.
You smiled as you spotted Ember, sitting on a couch in the corner. You walked over to her, embracing in a hug before sitting down with a sigh, happy with the relief of getting off your aching legs.
“I’m so excited you agreed to do this!” Ember exclaimed, pulling you close so she could hug you.
“Same, it’s been too long,” you replied, wrapping your arms around your friend.
She playfully ruffled your hair, laughing as you protested. “Seems like it’ll be a good turn out.”
You scanned the room, noticing that the tables and couches were filling in, friends, couples, and singles alike settling in for a good night.
“Yeah, the turn-out is usually good,” you replied.
You listened to the chatter, your mind wandering elsewhere in the cozy atmosphere. You’re not sure how much time passed as you stared into space, your mind running nonstop.
“Y/n! It’s about to start!” Ember said as she elbowed you in the side.
You shook your head to come back to the present. The lights were dim, a small spotlight shining on a spot in the center of the room. You assumed this would be where those who wanted to share their thoughts would sit, as there was a small wooden stool present, along with a microphone.
The crowd quieted, their attention focused on your boss who walked to the mic. She tapped on the head before clearing her throat.
“Welcome to poetry night! Tonight we will listen to some talented people recite some of literature’s greatest works. So sit back and let the words flow through your soul.”
You clapped as she left the makeshift stage, the first performer taking their place. You listened to poem after poem, your mind opening up and your heart beating at the promise of the words that were flowing through the small space.
Before you knew it, the night was almost over, the event coming to a close. You clapped as the last performer took to the stage, your eyes widening at the sight of him.
He was dressed in a black sweater and jeans, the fit loose on his slim body. His brown hair framed his face perfectly, the strands hanging down to his neck. His eyes were a beautiful shade of chocolate brown and seemed to shine with the spotlight that shone from above. His lips were large and plush and a pretty shade of pink that had you blushing.
He sat on the stool and pulled the mic closer and adjusted it. He cleared his throat as he looked out into the audience, his eyes roaming those gathered as if he was summoning their attention.
The extra step was moot however as everyone’s eyes were trained on him, awaiting the beautiful words that would fall from his lips.
You watched with bated breath as he opened his mouth and began to speak:
“Now sleeps the crimson petal, now the white; Nor waves the cypress in the palace walk; Nor winks the gold fin in the porphyry font. The firefly wakens; waken thou with me.”
As the man spoke, you felt like you were transported to another time, as a princess professes her love for the prince. The words that he spoke were smooth like velvet, yet full of emotion.
His eyes gazed upon the crowd, his eyes catching person after person as he recited the poem, making sure to captivate the audience. Eventually, his eyes made it to you and remained there as he continued to speak.
You couldn’t help but watch his lips as they opened and closed, as he continued his prose. You could feel your face heat up, as you dragged your eyes to his, holding his strong gaze.
He finished in a beat, the crowd erupting in cheers as he stood up and bowed slightly, before returning to his seat. He wasn’t sitting far from you as he was only a few tables away, his back turned toward you.
As the night went on, you couldn’t help but stare at the man, your mind still reeling after that performance. You wondered who he was as you haven’t seen him around the cafe. Ember tapped you on the thigh, causing you to turn and look at her.
You rolled your eyes as she wriggled her eyebrows at noticing how you were staring at the mystery man.
Once the lights came back up, people milled around chatting, discussing the choices of the night. You noticed a crowd of people surrounding the mystery man, mainly women gushing at how well he did.
“I’ll be right back,” you told Ember, who was speaking with some random person that was sitting next to you.
“Sure thing babe,” she replied, a sly smile forming on her face.
You walked over toward the man, determined to speak to him before the night ended. You definitely wanted to compliment him on his choice of work as Tennyson was one of your favorite authors.
You waited patiently as the flock of groupies gushed to him about irrelevant things, probably trying to see who could get his number first. You smirked at their desperation, watching as he tried to disentangle himself from a girl who was trying to hug him.
Chuckling, you decided to help him out.
“Eh mm,” you said, raising your eyebrow at the girls who turned around to see who had interrupted them.
“Others are waiting to speak with the gentleman, just wanted to let you know.”
The girls looked at you with disdain, their eyes narrowed as they hesitated to move. When you opened your mouth to say more, they scrambled away, muttering under their breaths about how they were rudely interrupted.
Shaking your head, you approached the beautiful man and smiled.
“Hi, great job tonight. Tennyson huh?” You said, watching as the man blushed and tucked his head down.
“Thank you, uh…yeah. He’s one of my favorites.”
“Really mine too! I’m y/n,” you responded, holding your hand out to shake his hand.
His eyes lit up at your words, excitement etched on his face. “Ah! Another fan, that makes my heart sing y/n. I’m Hyunjin.”
Hyunjin reached his hand to you, wrapping his fingers around yours and giving you a firm handshake. You couldn’t help but think how soft his hands were, albeit a little sweaty.
“I’d love to chat with you more about him…or poetry in general,” you said dropping your hand.
“Of course, of course, that would be excellent!” Hyunjin said as he nodded, his hair falling into his face at the movement.
“Great, I actually work here, so maybe we can meet-up after one of my shifts?”
“Sounds perfect,” he said, fiddling with his sleeves.
You smiled at how nervous he was, thinking he was pretty cute. “I’ll see you around then,” you said with a wave of your hand.
You turned on your heels and walked away, making your way back to Ember. You couldn’t miss the sly grin she had plastered on her face.
“Well, well, well, someone’s been busy,” she teased, giving you a wink.
“No, no, I just wanted to speak with him and see if he wanted to talk more about Tennyson. Turns out that’s his favorite poet too.”
“Mmhmm, sure whatever you say babe. Did you get his name?” Ember asked.
“Hyunjin,” you said simply, a warm feeling spreading throughout your body as you said his name.
“Well, may great things be in store for you two,” Ember said, as she genuinely smiled at you.
-- --
Weeks passed with you filling your days with work. You picked up long shifts which left you exhausted by the end of the day, causing you to tread home and immediately fall into bed out of exhaustion.
You saw Ember sporadically over the weeks on your few off days, which was a nice change of pace.
You haven’t seen Hyunjin, as he hasn’t stopped by. You pretty much gave up on the idea of the man showing up, chalking it up to that he forgot or wasn’t interested….not that he owed you anything anyway.
Despite this, a part of you hoped he would have stopped by, wanting to discuss with him his love for literature. You were fascinated with him, remembering how velvety his voice sounded as he brought centuries old words to life.
You were working the register one day, taking people’s orders, which you didn’t mind as most of your customers were regulars and really kind. However, the sight of a particular person made you gasp, your eyes widening at the sight of them.
The man sauntered over, a smirk on his face as he approached the counter.
“Well, well, hi love,” he said.
You felt bile rise-up at his words, your mind swirling with a million thoughts.
“What are you doing here?”
Your ex, Elias chucked and ran a hand through his hair.
“Can’t I just stop by for some coffee and to see my favorite girl?”
“I’m not your girl,” you sneered, your fists balling up at your side.
“Oh come on love, don’t be like that. I’ll take you back you know. Just be a good girl and be mine again.”
You were furious, heat rising to your face as your blood boiled. You could feel your hands shake, wanting to punch this man in front of you.
You were about to respond when another person stepped behind Elias, his eyes narrowed.
You looked up and recognized Hyunjin, your heart skipping at a beat at the sight of him.
“You’re holding up the line,” Hyunjin said, crossing his arms and adapting a threatening stance.
“I’m almost done,” Elias said as he continued to focus on you.
You swallowed as you saw Hyunjin’s face turn red, his fists balling up.
“Is he bothering you y/n?” Hyunjin asked you, concern in his eyes.
You merely shook your head yes, scared your voice would betray you as you were close to tears.
“Leave.”
Hyunjin spat the word out with so much venom, even you were taken aback. He seemed so sweet and innocent, but it seemed he had a tough side as well.
“Oh, I see how it is,” Elias said, looking between you two. “Good luck man she’s a piece of work.”
At that, Elias turned on his heels and walked away, walking out into the crowded sidewalk. You found yourself letting out a breath you didn’t know you were holding as your eyes landed on Hyunjin.
Hyunjin let out a huff and then uncrossed his arms, as he walked up to the counter. His eyes searched yours, making sure you were ok.
“Hi,” you sheepishly replied as you fiddled with your apron.
“Hi,” Hyunjin replied as he smiled, clearly happy you were ok.
“So, can I get you anything?” You asked as you smirked.
“Hmmm, I was thinking we could have that chat. Sorry I haven’t stopped by sooner, work has been busy.”
At his words, you felt your heart flutter within your chest, your excitement rising at the prospect of spending time with him. You tried to control yourself before responding, willing your heart to slow.
“I’d love that. I get off at 8.”
Hyunjin smiled, elated that you accepted his proposal. “Perfect, how about I swing by and pick you up then?”
“Sure,” you said as you tried not to bounce on your feet.
“It’s a date then. Oh, and I guess while I’m here, might as well get an iced americano!”
You chuckled and began to ring him up, a smile on your face all the while. When you selected his cup to write his name down, you drew a cute smiley face, adding little stars around the face. You smiled at him as you set the cup down.
“See you tonight y/n,” he said as he turned to walk to the pick-up area.
Your mind was reeling, your heart pounding in your chest. Hyunjin called it a date, an actual date. Is it a date? Did he just ask you out? Or was he just saying that to be cheeky?
The rest of the day, the thought was on your mind, causing you to make a few mistakes as you helped out customers. As the time for your shift to end got closer, you began to feel nervous and jittery, as you weren’t able to stand still.
Hyunjin was right on time, a huge smile on his face as he walked in looking like an absolute angel. You couldn’t take your eyes off him, not realizing you were staring until he called your name.
Apologizing profusely, you clocked out and grabbed your stuff, rushing to stand by his side.
“Where to?” You asked, looking up into his eyes.
“Well, I thought we could take a walk around the city? Chat a little and enjoy the night atmosphere?”
A walk after a long day sounded perfect.
“I love that, let’s do it!”
Hyunjin grinned and bowed, ushering you ahead. You giggled and blushed as he opened the door for you, the little bell tinkling lightly against the glass.
You stepped out into the night air, the crispness a nice welcome after being in the cafe all day. You both joined the many others making their way down the sidewalk.
“So you like poetry?” Hyunjin asked in a serious tone as he stared straight ahead.
“Mmhmm, I do. I studied English literature back in university. I don’t know, it’s just something about reading the words of those from long before you that creates such an intimate look into their life and thoughts.”
“I get it. I’ve been studying and reading poetry a few years now. It’s a comfort to me.” Hyunjin said, as he contemplated his thoughts.
“How long have you been reciting poetry?” You asked, turning to look at him.
Hyunjin paused in thought as he considered your question. “I’d probably say the last three years or so.”
You hummed in response, impressed with his dedication. You both were silent for a moment, the sound of crickets chirping through the night, their song almost melancholic.
“So…” Hyunjin began, “who uh…who was the guy that was harassing you earlier? Of course you don’t have to tell me if you don’t want to! I was just curious…” he continued, his voice trailing off.
You let out a heavy sigh. You deserved to give him an answer, especially since he came to your aid.
“That was my ex, Elias. We broke up a few months back. He um…I caught him with another girl in our bed…”
Your mood fell at the thought, remembering the day when you came home, exhausted from your long day at work. You were excited to see your boyfriend and have a relaxing evening…that is until you found out he wasn’t exactly excited to see you as he was between some other girl’s legs.
You recounted to Hyunjin how Elias tried to deny the affair, even though you saw the proof with your own eyes, but you didn’t give him a chance to grovel, ending the relationship that very night.
Hyunjin listened intently, his heart breaking at the fact that someone who was supposed to love you betrayed you instead. He definitely thought you deserved better as you seemed intelligent and kind and not to mention beautiful.
“I’m sorry y/n… he seems like an asshole to be honest.” He replied as he balled his hands into a fist at the thought of the sleaze bag he encountered earlier in the day.
“I recognize that now. There were definitely signs leading up to that night, but I guess I chose to ignore them.”
Hyunjin nodded, “I get it. You were blindsided by what you thought was a loving relationship.”
You hummed in agreement. You were blinded and so stupid, but Elias was in the past. You didn’t have to worry about him anymore.
“You deserve better y/n, just thought I’d mention it.”
You felt the corner of your eyes prickle with tears, threatening to spill over at any moment. Your chest felt heavy at his way of consoling you.
You did deserve better, and you believe that’s why his betrayal hurt so much. Your heart was healing, one day at a time. You could feel another stitch find its way within you at his words, Hyunjin’s company soothing. Somehow at that feeling, you knew you would be ok, and could continue to heal with the help of Hyunjin.
Your mind wandered to the man next to you. Maybe it was fate that you met him that night. If it wasn’t for your friend pushing you out of your comfort zone, you’d have never stayed to listen to others pour their heart out in prose and ultimately never met Hyunjin and his beautiful soul.
Tumblr media
Months have passed and you are now dating Hyunjin. Each day is full of bliss as he showers you with love, making sure you feel like a queen.
He is picking you up after work and taking you to dinner as today is your birthday. You tried asking where he was going to take you, but he kept saying it’s a surprise.
You were excited to say the least at the thought of the night to come. Your shift couldn’t end soon enough, as the clock struck six, your boss letting you go early in honor of the special day.
Your face lit up at the sound of the bell, Hyunjin walking into the cafe. He looked handsome in his jeans and sweater, his hair styled neatly.
“Hi angel! Ready?” He asked, stopping at the counter.
“Yep! Let me clock out and grab my bag.”
Hyunjin chuckled as he watched you scramble around, picking up your bag and hurrying to his side.
“Now I’m ready,” you smiled, looking up at your boyfriend.
Hyunjin grinned and took your hand, his fingers lacing with yours as he brought the back of your hand to his lips for a kiss.
Even though you’ve been dating for a few months now, you still blushed at his antics, the novelty never wearing off.
“Then let’s go, angel.”
Hyunjin led you out of the cafe and outside. You looked around your surroundings, your eyes widening at every restaurant you passed, wondering if it would be the one.
However, you passed building after building, not stopping at any of them.
Hyunjin could sense your curiosity, as he gave your hand a squeeze. “We’re almost there, see?” He asked, pointing to a building in the distance.
You took notice of a brick building that seemed empty. You were confused as he guided you to the door, the corridor beyond eerie looking.
“Where are we going?” You asked as you were more than nervous at this point.
You trusted Hyunjin but a part of you was a little scared, not knowing what awaited you within the building.
“Don’t worry angel, let’s keep moving, just one more flight of stairs,” Hyunjin cooed, as you both walked up a flight of stairs.
At the top of the staircase there was a large door, the metal frame seeming unwelcoming. Hyunjin stopped in front of it and grasped the handle while looking at you with a bright smile on his face.
“Ready?” He asked.
You nodded your head and held your breath, prepared for whatever was on the other side. As he opened the door, you were greeted with a balcony overlooking the city, the skyline lit up against the night sky. There were fairy lights strung around the perimeter, casting a soft glow on the rooftop.
In the center, there was a small table, set up for two, the flicker of two candles casting shadows across the table. It was all so surreal. You couldn’t believe Hyunjin did all of this for you.
“Surprise!” Hyunjin said, dramatically wiggling his fingers.
You chuckled at his antics, all of your nervousness gone.
“It’s beautiful! I can’t believe you did this for me,” you said, your voice breaking as you looked at Hyunjin.
“Aww angel, don’t cry,” Hyunjin said as he rushed over to you.
He gently wiped the tear that had escaped while he pulled you closer to his body.
“I’d do anything for you y/n. I love you so much.”
Your heart skipped a beat at his words as the feeling of butterflies fluttered within your stomach. You couldn’t believe your luck, happy that you were able to share this moment with the most perfect man.
“I love you too,” you gushed, your cheeks flushing with the statement.
Hyunjin flashed his beautiful smile before taking your hands in his once more.
“Shall we?”
“Yes please,” you softly said, letting him pull you toward the table.
You watched as he pulled your chair out, gesturing for you to sit. Once seated, he rushed to his chair and sat down. Your eyes followed his every move as he plated up dinner, the food smelling delicious as it was piled up on your plate.
He poured both of you a glass of wine and then signaled he was done. You both began to eat, the food seeming to melt on your tongue as a burst of flavors invaded your taste buds.
Hyunjin filled the evening with chatter, asking you about your day in detail. You were more than happy to discuss your day, as it was a little rough, having some difficult customers come through.
Once you were done eating, Hyunjin dished up dessert, setting down a slice of chocolate cake in front of you.
“You know me so well,” you said as you eyed the cake, your mouth watering in anticipation at eating the sweet treat.
“Of course angel, have to make sure you have your chocolate!”
You giggled and picked up your fork and cut a piece off. You moaned at the taste, your eyes closing as it melted in your mouth. You were in heaven, or close to it.
“So,” Hyunjin started as he twirled his fork around in his hand. “I am going to enter into the poetry night contest at the cafe. I think it would be something fun to do.”
Hyunjin looked at his plate, nervous in how you would respond. He wanted to share his talent with more people, and what better way to do so than through a friendly competition? The prize was also nice, one he believes would be worth winning.
“That’s a great idea baby!” You exclaimed, clapping your hands at the idea.
Hyunjin’s eyes lit up at your enthusiasm, his body relaxing further into the chair at your acceptance.
“Mind if we practice when we get home?” He asked, hope in his eyes.
“Of course, I’d love to help you,” you gushed, excited to hear which poem he chose.
“Great, let’s pack up and then we can head back.”
You nodded and began to gather your trash, helping hyunjin clean up. Once done, you both walked back to his apartment, giggling and chatting the whole way, your arms swinging back and forth between you.
“Thank you for dinner baby, I really did enjoy it,” you said, as you continued your walk.
“I’m happy you liked it angel, anything for my baby.”
You chuckled, your heart swelling at how sweet he is. You walked in silence, enjoying the quiet of the city as it was late. Within the last few blocks from Hyunjin’s apartment building, an idea popped in your head.
“Wanna race the rest of the way and see who can get there first?” You asked, wiggling your eyebrows.
“Oh yes! Let’s do it,” Hyunjin said.
“Just so you know, I plan on winning,” you teased as you dropped your hand from his.
“I’d like to see you try,” Hyunjin responded while squatting, preparing to take off.
“Ok, ready? 3…2…1..go!”
You both took off down the walk, a fluster of laughter and shouts as you both raced to his building. You couldn’t remember ever feeling this happy as you felt the wind blow through your hair as you raced your boyfriend. Tonight was a perfect night indeed and would definitely be one of your favorites.
— —
Once inside, you both made yourself comfy, changing into your sleep clothes. You giggled as Hyunjin pulled you into bed and pressed kisses all over your face.
“I love you sweet girl,” he murmured in between kisses.
“I love you too baby, that tickles!” You chuckled as he tried to pull you closer, all the while continuing to kiss you.
Once he was satisfied, he pulled back to look you in the eyes. “Happy birthday angel,” he whispered as he tucked a loose strand of hair behind your ear.
You smiled before leaning over to kiss him on the lips, your heart swelling at the gentleness of the kiss. You both laid there for what felt like a lifetime, snuggled into each other’s embrace as you lazily kissed each other. You tugged your fingers through his hair, the soft locks gliding easily through them.
Hyunjin whimpered against your lips, as he pressed himself against you, his length hard against your thigh. You rolled your hips, grinding against him as you deepened the kiss, running your tongue against his bottom lip asking for entrance.
He pulled you closer, your bodies flush against each other as his tongue danced with yours. You wrapped a leg around his waist so you could feel him better and continued to grind against him, sighing against his lips as his cock brushed against your core.
Disconnecting with a gasp, you laid there catching your breath as you stared at your lover, taking in the love mixed with lust in his eyes. Your eyes fluttered as Hyunjin lightly dragged his finger down your cheek, to your lips, his thumb catching at your bottom lip.
You moaned as he slowly pushed his finger within your mouth, your lips immediately wrapping around the digit. You lightly sucked on his finger, your tongue swirling around the digit, your eyes on his.
You smirked as you felt his cock twitch against your thigh. As you released his thumb with a pop, Hyunjin pounced on you, rolling you onto your back. He attached his lips to yours in a hurried kiss, his hands fumbling with your sleep shorts.
He dragged them down as best as he could, you aiding the process as you wiggled out of the fabric, your feet pushing them down your legs. Hyunjin pulled away briefly as he gripped the hem of your shirt and pulled it over your head.
You moaned as he attached his lips back to yours, your pussy clenching as he rocked his clothed cock into your core. He lazily kissed you, his pace slowing down, his heart beating against yours. You were lost in the feel of him when you heard him murmur, his voice sultry in your ear.
“She walks in beauty like the night, of cloudless climes and starry skies; and all that’s best of dark and bright, meet in her aspect and her eyes; thus mellowed to that tender light, which heaven to gaudy day denies.”
You pulled away slightly, confusion plastered on your face.
“Baby…what…”
But Hyunjin just silenced you with a kiss. “Shhh my angel, I’m practicing remember?”
It took you a moment to realize what he was talking about, lost in thought as his lips moved with yours, until it clicked a few seconds later. The poem. Ahh it made sense now.
At that, you relaxed further, letting out a sigh as his lips moved to your neck, sucking the skin there and licking the area to sooth it. Your fingers played with his hair, twirling the ends around the digit. As he continued to leave purple marks on your skin, he continued murmuring, his voice soft in the otherwise quiet room.
“One shade the more, one ray the less, had half impaired the nameless grace, which waves in every raven tress, or softly lightens o’er her face; where thoughts serenely sweet express, how pure, how dear their dwelling place.”
Once he was done reciting the next part, he trailed his lips on your chest, pressing wet kisses down the valley of your breasts. He wrapped his plush lips around your nipple, letting out little moans as he suckled the hardened nub.
“So beautiful angel,” Hyunjin murmured in between kisses as he fondled your breasts, his eyes closed in bliss as he savored your body.
His fingers trailed down your tummy, leaving goosebumps in its wake as he made his way to your core, his fingers swirling around your swollen clit. You sighed as he continued to gently play with the nub, shocks of pleasure wrecking your frame as you surrendered to his ministrations.
As he tortured your sweet flesh, his eyes snapped up to watch you writhing in pleasure. Licking his lips, he took a shaky breath before continuing on.
“And on that cheek, and o’er that brow, so soft, so calm, yet eloquent, the smiles that win, the tints that glow; but tell of days in goodness spent, a mind at peace with all below, a heart whose love is innocent.”
You opened your eyes as he finished, his voice trailing off at the end. You looked down at the love of your life between your legs, watching the veins pop out of his arms as he continued to pay attention to your clit.
You were close, the pleasure building, your chest heaving as you tried to breathe. Your hands gripped the sheets, the white fabric bunching up as you rocked your hips against his fingers.
“So sweet, so beautiful, delicate like a flower. Cum for me angel.”
You groaned at his words, your orgasm hitting you hard as he continued to gently fondle you. He grinned as you fell apart, his eyes roaming your face, taking in the look of pleasure, the scent of you as your slick made a mess of his hands.
Once you came down, Hyunjin shuffled up, parting your legs even more. At some point he had rid himself of his clothes, his hand stroking his leaking cock.
He brought his length between your folds, running his cock through your slick, before pushing into you. You both let out a moan, your arms reaching out for Hyunjin as he began to thrust into you.
“My baby,” Hyunjin cooed as he leaned down, your hands wrapping around his neck as you brought him closer to you.
Hyunjin slowly thrusted into you, taking his time, his cock dragging through your walls and hitting your sweet spot each time. You whined as he buried his face within your neck, placing sloppy kisses there, as he murmured his love for you.
You felt overwhelmed as he made love to you, the heat within your core building again. You clutched onto Hyunjin anywhere you could, his hair, his back, his waist as he brought sweet bliss upon you.
You reveled in the sound of both of you, as you breathed as one, punctuated with a low moan as he continued to rock into you. Hyunjin groaned each time your pussy made known how good he was fucking you, his hips stuttering as you squeezed around him.
“Come on angel, cum for me, be a good girl yeah?” Hyunjin moaned into your ear, his pace becoming more erratic as he got closer to his high.
You felt his cock twitch within you, your pussy clenching again and again, locking him in. You were blindsided as the coil within you snapped, your orgasm hitting you hard as you gasped, your pussy dripping with your arousal, drenching Hyunjin’s cock as he continued to fuck you through it.
Hyunjin let out a loud groan at the feel of your walls spasming around him, triggering his high, his cum spurting out within you, thoroughly coating your walls.
As you came down, you watched the man you love fall apart above you, a sight you will never get used to. He looked down at you, sweat dripping down his face, his hair disheveled as he thrusted his hips within you a few more times for good measure.
“Such beauty in your afterglow,” Hyunjin cooed as he pushed a strand of hair behind your ear and trailed a finger from your lips, down your chest, your breasts, your tummy, all the way down to your core.
He dragged his finger through some of the cum that was leaking around his cock that was still buried within your heat. Taking his soaked finger, he brought it to your lips, smiling as you opened and took the digit in.
You swirled your tongue around his finger, licking up the salty liquid, humming as you swallowed.
“Good girl,” Hyunjin praised as he withdrew his finger and his cock.
You whimpered at the emptiness, your arms reaching out for Hyunjin. He snuggled into your embrace, pressing sweet kisses all over your face.
“Stop baby,” you giggled, turning your head side to side.
“Nope, won’t stop angel,” Hyunjin teased as he continued his assault.
You both battled for a little while longer, the room filled with laughter as you both teased each other. Hyunjin settled down however and stared at you, almost as if he was staring into your soul.
“You know I love you right?” Hyunjin whispered, as he memorized your face for the millionth time.
“Mmhmm,” you said as you brushed your fingers through his hair. “And I love you.”
Hyunjin smiled at your confession as he leaned to press another kiss to your lips.
“Happy birthday,” he said as he rested his head on your chest.
This would be one of your best birthdays yet, filled with special moments with the man you love.
Tumblr media
The days passed as Hyunjin prepared the competition. He was ready to win, ready to receive that prize so he could surprise you. He had a plan after all.
You helped him practice as much as possible, your nights spent at your place or his, snacks scattered around the table as Hyunjin paced the floors reciting the poem. You were sure he would win, as he improved greatly over the last few weeks.
You had to work the day of the competition, however, Hyunjin would meet you there before your shift ended.
“You got this babe,” you said to him as you left for your shift, giving him a smile as you walked out the door.
Your shift passed, your nerves getting the best of you as the time of the competition drew nearer. Ember showed up early, wanting to support your boyfriend and cheer him on.
You directed her to a table, so that way you both would have good seats for the night. It didn’t take long until Hyunjin showed up, handsomely dressed as always.
He smiled as he approached you. “Hi angel!” He gushed, his body radiating with excitement.
“Hi baby, ready?”
“Of course, gonna win this thing!”
You chuckled at his optimism. “Go sit, Ember saved us seats. I’ll be there soon.”
Hyunjin nodded and blew you a kiss before walking away, taking a seat next to your friend.
You finished your shift and clocked out, the time passing fairly quickly. You sat down next to Hyunjin and placed your hand on his giving it a squeeze. He seemed to be buzzing with enthusiasm, but deep down you knew he was nervous.
“You got this baby,” you whispered, giving his hand another squeeze.
Hyunjin smiled and relaxed, elated that you were there to cheer him on.
The event began in no time, the little cafe packed with patrons. You watched as contestant after contestant performed, their words filling the small space, and taking the listeners to a different place and time.
Before you knew it, it was Hyunjin’s turn. You and Ember cheered him on as he took his place on stage, his confidence oozing as he gazed at the crowd. You were captivated as he began to speak, the words reaching each person, telling a story of love and beauty.
Hyunjin maintained eye contact with each person, his voice raising and falling at the appropriate moments, his hands flowing in movements that helped tell the story.
You couldn’t take your eyes off of him and neither could anyone else. After he recited the last line, there was silence in the cafe as everyone recovered from the journey, before a thunderous applause rang out.
You grinned as you cheered enthusiastically, watching as your boyfriend bowed before walking back to your table.
“Good job babe!” You said as you kissed his cheek, the flesh reddening at the action as all eyes were on him.
As he was the last contestant, the award ceremony began shortly after his performance. You listened as your manager thanked everyone for being there to support these talented people as cheers rang out once more.
Once she was done with logistics, the time came to announce the winner. You held your breath as she slowly unfolded a piece of paper, your hand reaching out to hold on to Hyunjin’s.
She took a moment to read what was written before a smile broke out on her face.
“And the winner is….Hwang Hyunjin!”
Cheers rang out at the announcement, but loudest of all was you. You hugged Hyunjin tightly, tears forming in your eyes at his win.
Hyunjin stood up to go claim his prize, the loud uproar not dying down until he sat down.
“You did it!” You exclaimed, grasping his hands in yours.
Hyunjin beamed, his eyes shining as he tried not to cry.
“I did it for us love.” He said as he gazed into your eyes.
You cocked your head in confusion. “For us?” You inquired.
Hyunjin nodded as he handed you the prize he’d won. “Open it.”
You took the envelope from him and opened it, eyeing two pieces of paper nestled within. It took you a moment to notice what they were.
“Plane tickets?” You looked closer. “Oh! We’re going to Paris!” You exclaimed as you began bouncing on your seat.
“Yes we are angel,” Hyunjin said as he watched you dance in your seat.
Hyunjin needed to win this trip. He wanted to take you to Paris, the city of love, to shower you in love. He also had another plan up his sleeve, one that he had to keep secret for just a little longer.
His mind wandered to the little black box tucked away in his sock drawer, a beautiful diamond nestled in the velvet within. He knew you were the love of his life from that first day he saw you, sitting in the crowd listening to him speak.
You were his muse, his love, his everything; your aura radiating whispers of beauty.
He wouldn’t want to spend his life with nobody else but you. That he was sure of.

Shows 23 and 24
In London for Mighty Hoopla, it would be rude not to get a couple of shows in.
Show 23 was Friday night, and I knew it would be one of Carls last Aces appearances. Settled on a peep loop 2, I thought I’d spend 1 and 3 just relaxing in the space. Eric was on as Hades and he zoned in on me in the welcome. I never volunteer to be ‘first’ or ‘next’ as I think it’s a brilliant intro for first timers…but he looked directly at me as he asked who’s first….and waited until I had to put my hand up. He sent me through to Mycenae and as I was fairly late in, I decided to wait a couple of minutes for him to turn up in the crate room. I’ve not seen that scene before so was keen to see his initial movements through the space. I followed him up to the first 1:1 and wondered if he would pick me out again…..and omg that 1:1 is amazing. I felt so bad leaving him to go to peep, but my only intention for the night was to say goodbye to Aces. So I did the dirty…
I spent loop 3 wandering and guiltily watching Hades from afar…but it was a magical show and Carl was as splendid as ever.
Show 24 was a hang-over show. The Hades entrance was hilarious. Sam has a sixth sense for picking out people who don’t want to be chosen…so for the second time this weekend I was sent over to Greece. Feeling a little delicate, I decided on a Fania Luba, and a Omagbitse Clytemnestra. Fania was INSANE! what a performance! She is genuinely terrifying and her scene in the tenements wash room was glorious! Omagbitse is the ultimate Clytemnestra and it was fab to see the whole loop. I’ve seen it in parts, but never the whole tragic episode. Loop 3 I tried to do a Nick Polymestor….but Troy was so hot, my hangover got the better of me so I spent some chill time with Mitch Zag. To top a magic weekend was a walkout with the oh so lovely Serian…who can make me melt with looks like that anytime he wants

Note
how did you go about gaining more notes on here?
Honestly....purely by accident!
I was having a rough day in the headspace department when it came to my writing and I just popped out a little encouraging post that I needed to hear. I figured other people would probably need to hear it too. And my pep talks were born. Much to my surprise, people enjoy them so I keep making them whenever something rambles through my brain like a tumbleweed.
I also run a bi-weekly event (Fab Fridays) with no commitment/sign up required, so people can interact when they like. I REALLY did not expect this to take off but it had a huge response and it's been going strong for over a year now.
Occasionally, I post my own writing, but that is pretty rare due to personal preferences. I tend to lose momentum when I share my content too soon in my writing process, so I keep it close to the vest until I'm nearly finished.
While I do get a few lovely followers interacting with my original work, the bulk of my interaction comes from my pep talks, with Fab Fridays in second place. And I don't post my pep talks on a regular basis either, simply because it's just...not something I can maintain. I post whenever inspiration strikes, and the queue is on for reblogged content that I've found helpful in the meantime.
Ultimately, offering encouragement, advice, and sharing posts with sought after info is a big boost in the writing community. Interaction on my personal work has come from the connections I've made in the community along the way.
So, basically: my blog is pretty much just me stumbling over my feet and hoarding bits of writing stuffs like gems. I don't try to post anything popular or trendy - I'm too old for that 🤣 I'm mostly just blogging whatever content I like and/or have found useful during my travels through the blogosphere.
Hope that helps! :)

Small City Girl
In which, Harry is a heartbroken man, and Y/N is a small city girl who works in a coffee shop.
_______________________________________________________________
“I promise yeh, she’s lovely, proper little down to earth thing. She’s a barista in mayfair, proper” Jeff says talking to Harry about Glenne’s friend, whom of which he hadn’t heard of until now.
“Why haven't you invited her to anything before?” Harry asked, raising an eyebrow.
Jeff, knowing what Glenne and him were up to, just smiled and shrugged it off as miscommunication and timing.
Later that evening, arriving at Nialls for what would be their weekly pizza Fridays, which mainly consists of, pizza, movies, cosy clothes, some alcohol and just a little bit of mystery, Harry was already feeling tired.
Niall opened the door and walked off immediately. Niall was never the hostess with the mostess, more of a ‘make yourself a drink, you know where it is’ type of guy.
Harry ensures to make the rounds, as usual, kissing everyone's cheeks and giving them a light squeeze to say hello.
That is until his stood face to face with Y/N, the girl who seemed to have become Glenne’s new best friend all of a sudden.
Harry wasn’t complaining.
With medium length hair, bronzed skin, green emerald eyes, just like his, and a smile that immediately encouraged you to do the same, he really wasn’t complaining.
She adorned a cosy, warm like jumper, red, and some black gym leggings, Harry would presume for comfort and some tommy hilfiger socks that covered her tiny feet.
“‘Ello love, M’harry” he smiled, bending so he was able to press soft lips against the smoothness of her cheek.
“M’Y/N, it’s lovely to meet you, I’ve heard so much about you” She smiled politely as she unwrapped herself out of his warm embrace.
“Funny tha’, me too” Harry turns his head to Jeff raising an eyebrow as if he knows exactly what he’s up to before he’s even admitted it.
“Harry, did you bring pizza or not?” Demands Niall sitting near Adam and Emi who seem to be cuddled up under a soft blanket.
“Didn’t know what everyone wanted, was just gonna order it on me phone when I got here.” Harry said waving his phone in the air as he slipped out of his shoes and kicked them to the side in the hallway.
Making himself comfy on the sofa, he noticed that Y/n was on the other sofa next to Jeff and Glenne who were snuggled up under the same blanket as her, but Y/N just looked as though she was third wheeling.
Other couples, Niall and Lux, Adam and Emi and Sarah and Mitch were in their respective couples, Harry and Y/N seemed to be outnumbered.
______________
Pizza came, and was eaten, alcohol got brought out and devoured, everyone was tipsy to say the least.
“Right, your turn curly. Truth or dare” Niall probed trying to get the looser side of Harry to come out to play.
“Truth” he mutters taking a swig of his Jack and Coke.
“Fancy anyone right now? Bae-cation anytime soon?” He asked.
Harry shook his head, Niall fully aware of his situation in regards to his ex girlfriend.
“Nah, I’m on me own for a bit. No bae-cation” Harry said, needing two exact swigs on his drinks.
For some reason, Harry found it in himself turning to look at Y/N’s reaction. Of course she was a good looking lady, and Jeff seemed fond of her ‘heart of gold and warm characteristics’ but what was pulling Harry in?
Was it the way she treated him like a friend of a friend and didn’t immediately scream when she knew it was him?
Or how she wrapped him in a warm embrace back like she had known him forever?
Harry didn’t know, but Harry knew wanted more. Her kind eyes met his and Harry began to feel himself blush.
Jeff and Glenne seemed to be working on their matchmaking skills already by making Y/N feel immensely uncomfortable being under the same blankets as them.
This, of course, didn’t go unnoticed by Harry. “Hey, Y/N, come over ‘ere, get away from them love birds”
Y/N, a little surprised, got up, picking up her cup of tea (she wasn’t a big drinker) and walked over to Harry. Harry opened up the blanket signalling for her to get under.
Y/N, a little cautious but intrigued never less snuggled under the blanket.
Was she supposed to cuddle him? Did he want to cuddle her? Did he want her to be next to him or did he just feel bad?
If Y/N was being honest, with all she had heard from Glenne, she seemed to like the idea of Harry, him being completely gorgeous helped.
Harry, who found it in his nature just to wrap his arms around Y/N and pull her close, smiled down at Y/N as she began to think.
He just said there was no girl, no girl in his life for anything, was this him trying to initiate something? Would he even like her? Ultimately she was just a girl, living in a big city making coffee and watching too many rom-coms.
His unruly curly hair, his green eyes that blazed into your soul with every bit of hope that you had no idea what of. He had a way with making people feel comfortable, at home, welcome and not the slightest bit cold.
Y/N was fucked.
But Y/N had to remind herself that Harry Styles was simply something she couldn’t have. She’d never fit into his big travelling lifestyle, or his other famous friends, his lifestyle, the buying Gucci without having to finance.
She was little Y/N and he was big Harry, it would never work.
Somehow though, she begged for her mind to change.
_________
They’re full on cuddling now, everyones a little too tipsy, except them. Harry is the support of the cuddle, on his bag with his arms wrapped around Y/N comfortably. Y/n and taken it upon herself to snuggle in, her back against his chest and one of her small hands closed around his softly dragging her thumb back and forth against the smoothness of Harry’s hand.
What moisturizer does he use?
Y/N shifts, now a little uncomfortable in their position.
“Can’t get comfy love?” Harry asks in a soft whisper, not that they had anything to whisper about, everyone was well aware of their cuddling.
Y/N shook her head. Harry shifted going on to his side and gently moving Y/N so that she was in front of him and in a spooning position.
“Better?”
“Much, thank you”
_______
“Something MUST have happened.” Glenne insisted.
Y/N shook her head, everyone left, he took me home and kissed my cheek.” Y/N steamed milk and gently poured it into the cup with a filled expresso, motioning her hand to create a leaf pattern in the cup.
“No”
Y/N looks up at Glenne, who’s dressed ever so elegantly all the time.
“I promise”
“I call bullshit.”
“Will you just take your coffee Glenne” Y/N giggled.
“So, do you fancy him?” Glenne asked.
Rolling her eyes, Y/N looked away.
“You so do!”
Y/N shook her head and giggled.
“I do, but don’t go raving about it, if anything was to happen I need to know him more and we need to spend some time together” Y/N smiled.
______
The second time they saw each other was another regular occurrence that Harry attended, which it now seems that Y/N does too.
Jeff’s pizza night.
Harry did his normal walk around the room and say hello to everyone with a kiss on the cheek and a tight hug, Y/N receiving the exact same treatment.
Harry seemed a little off with Y/N this time, not really talking to her as much as Nialls
The boys were chilling out on Jeff’s massive sofa that was adorned with loads of pillows to satisfy everyone and anyones preferences of a pillow.
Meanwhile, the girls were in the open plan kitchen chatting over a bottle of wine, or five.
Harry however, had noticed that Y/N had only had two glasses and was taking her time. He liked that. He liked she wasn’t someone who drank loads and became frustrating after a drink or two.
He’d looked at her a few times this evening. Maybe a few too many. Short glances and a quick turn of the head everytime he made eye contact, with his cheeks blossoming rose everytime.
What was it about this girl that had him almost putty in his seat?
Why was he so intrigued?
“Disney would be a fab idea.” Lux said.
“Yeah, we can all take the Eurostar and spend the weekend!” Sarah added.
Sarah called the boys to come in the kitchen, each followed.
“We were thinking why don’t we all go Disney for the weekend?” Sarah proposed.
All the boys began to nod and all Harry could think about was the numbering situation. Everyones in couples except him and Y/N.
“Everyone up for it?” Lux questioned and everyone was in, even Harry, even Y/N…
______________ “Hello sweetheart,” Anne said as she walked out of the lift and into Harry’s condo where he was sitting comfortably on his sofa.
“Hey Mum, you okay?” He got up and offered her a cuddle. “Tea?” She nodded.
Walking to the kitchen Anne began to start conversation.
“What’s been up with you recently?” She probed.
“Nothing much, just having some down time, found it really relaxing just taking time for myself. Done a few pilates class actually, thanks for the suggestion.” Harry thanks.
Anne smiles and takes a seat on his bar stool and watches him make her tea. “Two sugars love” she reminded.
Placing to sugars in her tea and none in his own he placed the tea in front of his Mum and took the seat next to her.
“Mum, I think I have a problem.” He stated.
“Must be from your father, nothing to do with me” She joked and Harry laughed a little. Anne motioned for him to go on.
“There’s the girl, real stunner Mum, something about her. Y/N. Can’t say I know her overly well, well, once at Nialls and once at Jeff’s but you know there’s a little something.” He said.
Anne smiled softly and placed her hand over his.
“So what’s holding you back sweetheart, never normally like this with girls. I’m pretty sure you know how to woo her.” She said lightheartedly.
“I can’t do it again Mum, after Amelia, with the fame and money hungry, I just don’t want to go through it.” He sighed.
“I’m scared of putting myself in a position where I’m likely to get hurt. Do I need to focus on myself for a bit or what? But it just felt so good to have someone to hold at Niall’s the other night. To have someone to snuggle down with and be a bit infatuated with.”
Anne felt for a son, truly. Amelia broke his heart. Stepped on it, smashed it, blended it and threw it away without a blink of an eyelid. Now here he was.
“You said yourself. You don’t know her yet, you don’t know if she is like Amelia, and I doubt she is. I’m sure Jeff and Niall are clued up enough to know what she’s like if they invite her round” Anne added.
“She’s Glenne’s friend, think she’s trying to set us up if I’m honest.” Harry rolled his eyes at the thought.
“Then, I’m sure Glenne’s not silly. Why not just try things aye?” She rubbed Harry’s arm and Harry smiled at the affection.
“There’s a trip to Disneyland” Harry mentioned.
Anne raised her eyebrows. “A trip?”
“Yeah, Lux and Sarah kind of arranged it. Everyone’s in couples except Y/N and I.” Harry said.
“Okay, this is good! Text her, ask her if, because of the number situation she fancies catching a ride with you and then offer to book a twin room to save her some money on a room for herself. Put yourself out there babe.” Anne suggested.
Harry nodded. That was a good idea. That way, in the car on the way to Paris he can get to know her a little more, AND it's a nice thing to do.
“How did you know Robin was right for you? How do you find the right person Mum?” Harry asked rubbing his face.
Anne took a moment to collect her answer. Looking at her son, who was hurt, but wanting to love again, she came up with the best answer she could.
“One day, you’ll stop thinking about other women, you’ll stop thinking that there’s better, you’ll stop thinking about finding love, because you would have found it, truly. Someone will walk into your life and love you for you. They’ll love you because it’s something they feel rather than something they want. They’ll selfless, but also selfish when needed. You’ll wake up every morning to turn over to see a face that you feel you can’t live without. You’ll know my love, you will. That person will be your bread and water, and you theirs. It takes time, and time can be the best healer. We live in a world of instant. Instant coffee, Instagram, next day or same day delivery, but love isn’t instant, it takes time and energy and somethines, much like you now, you’ll have little energy, but darling, someone is out there for you.”
Harry took in his Mum’s words.
“And Harry, it might be this girl, Y/N may be it. But she also might not. And that's okay because everything in life is a lesson, and lessons are meant to be taught.”
“So, do me a favour Harry and try. One heartbreak in life isn’t the end.”

Harry  Y/N
Hey love, got your number off Glenne. Was looking at the numbers for the Disney trip, seems like we’re outnumbered. I’m going to drive in my car to Paris for it, I have a work thing the day before, want to catch a ride with me? H x
Hey Harry! Are you sure? That’s so lovely of you! I also have a shift the day before so that works perfectly with me x
Of course, without a doubt. Was also thinking, money wise, want to share a room? They’re expensive by themselves, though I’d just get a twin room. H x
I don’t want to intrude, only if you’re sure. Let me know how I owe you x
Don’t worry about it I’ll sort it and text you details of when I’ll pick you up. H x

🥡🍛🍕FRIDAY NIGHT 🍛🥡🍕 Friday nights and weekends are alwaya tough at the beginning. A lot of people would normally have a takeaway, or ‘treat night’ and it can give you the right hump that you can’t do that. Some tips.... 1. Tell yourself - why are you losing weight? How will you feel when you get there? What’s the ultimate goal? It’s all so much better and more important than a takeaway! 2. Remind yourself that the satisfying feeling of a takeaway is VERY temporary. As soon as it’s done (and likely before that even!) you’ll feel yucky and guilty. 3. DRINK. Glug the water and fill yourself up on that so you’re less tempted to pick - perhaps even have some sparkling water with some water flavouring added! My biggest tip, is don’t eat off plan SPONTANEOUSLY. The lack of control and impulsiveness can really bring you down and knock your confidence. You’ll feel SO good for saying no and not being knocked! YOU GOT THIS!! Fandom: Doctor Who Rating: Teen Ship: Tenth Doctor/Rose Tyler, Metacrisis Tenth Doctor/Rose Tyler Characters: Tenth Doctor, Rose Tyler, Jackie Tyler, Pete Tyler, Tony Tyler Series: And We're Not Out of the Tunnel Word Count (Chapter): 2,646 Other Tags: Pete's World, Pete's World Torchwood, Angst, Chronic Illness, Disability, Disabled Character Read on AO3 / Read in order
Summary: Rose has been tired for a couple years now. She thinks it's from working so hard on the dimension cannon without a break, but then she gets a break and she doesn't quite recover. Finally, she starts going to doctors, but they're no help. At least John (the metacrisis Doctor) is with her every step of the way.
(Fic is COMPLETE with chapters posting Tuesdays and Fridays!)
NOTES: this one's for @fab-wolf-in-the-gloom because it's her birthday. happy birthday enjoy your angst
Rose’s test results trickle in, after that. She shows John the heart monitor, his fingers tracing the cold white plastic as he presses his forehead against hers. The doctor’s office calls a couple of days later to say that her blood looks fine, but maybe she should take a vitamin D supplement— which she does. It doesn’t seem to help. She returns the heart monitor, and they call her a day later and tell her everything’s fine. There’s no reason she should be feeling this way.
John goads her into setting up another appointment. She does, and the doctor tells her to see a cardiologist and a neurologist and a rheumatologist, all of whom have months-long waitlists. She calls them when she gets home and gets herself added to the lists, and then she melts into John’s arms, feeling defeated. She’s just so tired.
Still, life goes on. She keeps going to work, struggling for coherency against a bottomless well of exhaustion. She goes out with John, every so often— she can’t stay out long, but on a good day she still likes a nice restaurant or a short walk. It makes her feel less like a lump, too, to go out into the world, although she inevitably feels worse when she can’t maintain it multiple days in a row or for more than an hour or two.
And then Christmas rolls around, their second in the new universe, and Rose knows she’s in for trouble.
The thing is, she hasn’t told her mum about her illness yet. And she doesn’t really want to— she hasn’t gotten over the embarrassment of it all, the shame inherent to her lost vitality. She doesn’t want all the questions, the careful prodding, the pity, and she doesn’t want to try and explain something she doesn’t really understand herself. But her condition has worsened in the past year: she’s having trouble standing up for long periods of time, and the list of foods that make her sick is getting longer by the day. She’s managed to hide it every time she’s gone to see her family so far, but Christmas is the ultimate challenge: it’s multiple days at the Tyler residence, with friends and extended family filling the space, and little Tony running around expecting every adult to drop everything and play with him at a moment’s notice, which Rose has historically been only too glad to do. None of it is exactly physically intense by most reasonable standards, but Rose’s definition of “physically intense” has changed lately, and family Christmas definitely falls under it.
She says this all to John one night. They’re in bed, the lights off: it’s easier, sometimes, for Rose to talk about these things in the dark. It feels like the vulnerability doesn’t count, somehow. She’s just staring into nothingness, speaking into an empty space while John holds her from behind.
“I don’t know if I can do it,” she says. She feels weakness settling into her limbs just thinking about it. “All those people…”
John pulls her closer, his breath tickling her neck. “You haven’t considered just telling your mother, have you?”
“What am I supposed to say?” Rose rolls over, flinging an arm over John: even that simple act makes her heart race. “Merry Christmas, Mum, I’ve come down with a mysterious illness and I waited until now to tell you?”
“Tell her before Christmas,” John suggests. His face is just a few inches away from hers, bemused in the dim light. “It’s only the beginning of December now.”
“I can’t.” She just can’t. That’s all there is to it. She can’t face her mother with the news of her sickness. It’s too much.
John presses a kiss to her forehead. “Oh, Rose,” he breathes.
“It’s just—” Rose closes her eyes, trying not to cry. “If I tell anyone what’s happening to me, it’s going to feel permanent. And I don’t want it to be permanent.”
“It won’t be.” John’s words are imbued with the kind of confidence that made Rose fall in love with him, back when he was the Doctor. “We’ll figure out what it is, and we’ll fix it.”
“Maybe.” Rose rolls over again, nestling herself against John’s body and burying her face in her pillow. John’s assurances are soothing in the moment, but they’re not traveling through time and space anymore, with a TARDIS and a sonic screwdriver and a way out of any dangerous situation. They’re living real, human lives now, where problems can’t always be fixed. Where sometimes people get sick and don’t get well. Where sometimes people die, terribly and tragically, and there’s nothing to be done about it.
For now, though, she lets herself pretend to be convinced. She pulls John’s arm until he’s holding her tight against him, sighing softly as he brings her closer. She falls asleep like that, and for a moment, everything is all right.
Until Christmas comes.
The stress of it all has Rose feeling much worse than usual, barely able to eat even her safest of foods. She spends the weeks before the holiday trying to get presents together for her parents and Tony— John helps, going out to the shops for her and texting to ask what to get. Together they make toffee, piles and piles of it for everyone who’ll be attending the Tylers’ celebration, Rose sitting on a stool as she spreads the chocolate. And by December 23, when she and John are slated to go over to her parents’ place, all the preparations and all her nerves have left her absolutely exhausted. It’s all she can do to drag herself out of bed and into the car, pulling her suitcase behind her.
John drives them to the Tyler mansion. Rose has never been able to wrap her head around the success her parallel dad has seen— the gate at the end of the drive opens for them only because Rose’s parents have installed a sensor in their car that marks them welcome guests; the house is so vast that it’s difficult to conceptualize a family of three living there alone; and when they park their car, it’s on an expanse of pavement that can fit at least six more.
They get out of the car and pull the luggage out of the trunk. Rose clings to her suitcase, hoping it’ll hold her up at least long enough to get inside the house: but as they step towards the side door, they hear a cry of, “Rose!” before a cannonball of a four-year-old comes shooting towards them. Rose stumbles, laughing, as Tony wraps his arms around her legs. John drops his suitcase to steady her, his arm at her back, and seconds later Jackie Tyler comes running out in her silk dressing gown, calling, “Tony, no!” She dives after Tony, scooping him up in one arm and straightening to give Rose a huge smile.
“Rose, sweetheart, merry Christmas.” She gives Rose a side hug with her free hand before adding, “And you, John. Merry Christmas.”
“Merry Christmas, Jackie,” John says, accepting Jackie’s hug.
“Merry Christmas, Mum!” Rose adds. “And you, too, Tony.” She ruffles Tony’s straw-blond hair.
“All right, come on, then, let’s get you two inside,” Jackie says, gesturing towards the door. Rose and John follow her, their suitcases trailing behind.
The inside of the Tyler home is impeccable. Rose is always a little intimidated by it— she grew up in a shabby little flat, clutter all over, but of course Jackie Tyler, when presented with quite a lot of money, makes use of her good fortune. This Jackie has kept up what the Jackie originally in this universe started, which means lavishly decorated rooms kept as pristine as possible— although as they enter the living room Rose can see some of Tony’s toys lying about on the floor, and a few gossip magazines that she’s sure belong to her mother on the coffee table.
“Pete!” Jackie calls. “Rose and John are here! Come say hello!” To Rose and John, she adds, “Come on, make yourself at home. I’ll have Fiona bring out some snacks.” She puts Tony down, cautioning, “Behave yourself, now.”
Pete enters, grinning when he sees Rose and John. “There they are!” he exclaims. “Great to see you. Merry Christmas.” He hugs Rose, then John, and then they all sink down to face each other on the curved sofa. Tony wastes no time climbing on Rose’s lap.
“So, how’ve you been?” Jackie asks. “You don’t come round nearly often enough.”
“I saw you just last week,” Rose protests.
Jackie shakes her head. “It’s not the same.”
Rose rolls her eyes. “We’ve been all right, wouldn’t you say?” She glances to John.
“Top of the world,” John agrees. With a grin, he adds, “How about you? How’s dog Rose?” Rose kicks her foot against his. He knows how she feels about dog Rose, and he never passes up an opportunity to make fun of her for it.
“Oh, didn’t I tell you?” Jackie asks. “She’s Daisy now. We finally retrained her.”
“Thanks to your mum’s hard work,” Pete adds.
“Daisy,” Rose repeats. “That’s nice. Another flower.” She raises an eyebrow at John. “Not as much comedic value for you, I suppose.”
“Ah, I’ll survive.” John leans back, stretching an arm around Rose’s shoulders. Rose nestles against him with half a smile.
The rest of the day passes without incident, with laughter and conversation. Rose picks over the offered snacks and meals, trying to hide her lack of appetite: she thinks she catches her mum watching her a couple times, but Jackie doesn’t say anything.
In the afternoon, Tony succeeds in getting John to build a pillow fort with him on the living room sofa. Rose sits on the single untouched cushion, watching them work together; it’s sweet, the way John indulges Tony’s babbled requests. The pillow fort is surprisingly sound, structurally speaking, but of course with John taking the task so seriously Rose doesn’t know why she expected any less. Finally, John pokes his head out from under the blanket that stretches across the center of the sofa and says, “All right, Rose, do you want the grand tour?”
Rose can’t help but grin in response. “‘Course I do.” She slides off the sofa and under the blanket. It’s surprisingly comfortable: John and Tony have lined the floor with the sofa cushions, and the light from overhead filters through the blanket to create a welcoming ambiance. Tony is standing, staring up at the blanket, but when Rose comes in he comes over to her and starts explaining every part of the fort. He’s at an age where only about fifty percent of what he says is intelligible, but Rose smiles and nods as he shows her everything.
“How much of this did you do?” she murmurs under her breath to John.
“Oh, this is all Tony,” John replies, his grin radiant in the dim light.
Rose laughs. She leans into John, watching Tony run in and out of the small space, bringing in his toys and books. Eventually, he comes up to Rose, holding up a book, and Rose sets him on her lap and reads to him in the dim light, John looking on over her shoulder. It’s cozy in the fort, and despite her exhaustion, Rose feels warm inside, sitting with John and her little brother, reading together.
The next day is when things get hectic. The Tylers are having a Christmas Eve party with just about everyone they know, and the house is a flurry of maids, caterers, and decorators, all getting the place ready for the festivities. Rose spends most of the morning hiding out in Tony’s playroom under the guise of keeping him out of the way— really, she’s just glad to keep herself out of the way. All the hubbub overwhelms her senses, makes her dizzy. Besides, Tony isn’t all that hard to look after: he’s completely intent on building a town out of blocks, and all Rose has to do is follow his exact instructions on where to put new buildings. John pops in every so often, just to say hi— he’s actually helping with all the setup.
They have to change into formal clothes for the party: Rose has a long dress in a glittering blue, her hair pulled back and away from her face. She likes to think it makes her look normal, just like anyone else at this party. Like someone who’s never struggled just to get through the day without collapsing. John’s wearing one of his nicer suits, handsome as ever. They come down the stairs into the entryway just as guests start to arrive. Friends, family members, CEOs and politicians gather in the foyer, taking cocktails and appetizers from platters the caterers are carrying. Rose has never quite been able to wrap her head around Pete’s life in this universe, but she manages to fit in well enough when she has to, with all her social graces. All Pete’s friends think she’s the daughter of a family friend who died, which is close enough to the truth— and explains why she seems so out of place around her parents’ displays of wealth. She just has to be careful not to slip and call her mum by “Mum” when too many people are around.
The cocktail portion of the party lasts just a little too long for Rose’s taste, and by the time dinner starts, her head is spinning. John keeps a hand at her elbow as they walk into the dining area, where they’re seated next to some cousins. It’s awkward— Rose knows parallel versions of them from her other universe, but they don’t know her at all, and she doesn’t know much about these versions of them. It’s all a bit of a headache, figuring it out, or maybe Rose’s near-constant headache is just rearing its ugly head. She manages to push past it to participate in the conversation, but she can tell from John’s light touches that he knows something’s wrong.
Rose is used to something being wrong, though— she doesn’t let it bother her. She sits through the party, polite as she knows how, pretending she’s eating the full meal and not just picking at the bits she thinks she can eat. She’s going to feel awful whenever she and John get home, she knows that, but she’ll cross that bridge when she gets to it. For now, she focuses on keeping herself upright, ignoring the discomfort in her stomach and her head and her chest, joining the conversation. It’s really very interesting— John’s explaining some of the tamer work they do at Torchwood, and one of the cousins is connecting it to a book she read a few weeks ago, and Rose wants nothing more than to participate normally, without having to worry about every sensation in her body and whether or not she’s going to make it through the meal.
She gets through, though, and by the end of it she’s learned a lot about her cousins’ kids and jobs and lives. It all feels very mundane, really, the kind of mundane she once thought she’d never want and the kind of mundane she’s more recently been thinking she’ll never have, what with her declining health. She manages to pretend, sort of, that she’s just having a regular Christmas with her family.
Until the guests have left, and it’s all Rose can do to say good night and go upstairs without falling over. John comes with her, and when she collapses on the bed they’re sharing, he sits next to her, running his fingers through her hair and asking softly, “You all right?”
“I’m fine,” Rose murmurs, although she doesn’t feel fine. She feels like a wrung-out dishtowel. But she doesn’t feel any worse than expected, and she will make it through. “Really.”
“If you say so.” John squeezes her shoulder, then gets up and moves to the corner of the room where their suitcases sit. He tosses Rose’s pajamas her way, and she sits up long enough to change before curling up under the covers. A few seconds later, John turns out the lights and joins her.
They’re both woken up the next morning by Tony insistently banging on the door. Rose’s whole body is sore, and she groans into her pillow while John goes to open the door: Tony runs inside, yelling, “You have to come downstairs so we can see what Santa brought!”
“Wish Santa would come at ten,” Rose mumbles. She pushes herself into a sitting position, ignoring the way her headache shifts. “All right, let’s see what he brought.” She lets Tony lead her and John downstairs, where Jackie and Pete are already waiting, just as disheveled as Rose and John. There is, of course, a bulging stocking hanging over an impressive pile of toys: Tony is just a little bit spoiled, and it never shows more than on Christmas. Rose curls up on the sofa in her pajamas, and Jackie passes her two mugs of coffee. She hands one to John, and they watch, still half-asleep, as Tony digs through his stocking with glee.
Christmas Day, all things considered, is a much lesser affair than Christmas: the huge house is empty, and once they exchange gifts, the day is too— until Jackie’s Christmas dinner. Even with money and a household staff, Jackie still cooks Christmas dinner every year. And Rose usually helps, so she ignores her vaguely achey body and drags herself into the kitchen. Jackie’s already preparing a turkey and a couple side dishes, so Rose offers to make the fig pudding for dessert. It’s a Christmas staple, and one she’s reasonably sure she won’t mess up. She goes through the motions of making a puree, soaking the figs, mixing a batter… she’s standing the whole time, and getting increasingly dizzy. She tries to find subtle points of contact with the counter, leaning against it just a little bit for support, or resting her hand on the cool marble while she runs the electric mixer.
Jackie flits around the room, chattering away, giving Rose all her friends’ gossip— which, considering that some of Jackie’s friends are the wealthiest women in London, is fairly riveting. But Rose can’t focus. She’s losing track of herself, trying to manage the figs and the batter and her own dizziness all at once. Until Jackie asks, “Are you even listening to me?”
Rose jumps. “Yeah, ‘course I am.” But she doesn’t even believe herself.
There’s a long silence. Rose keeps her focus on the batter, still mixing away, but she feels Jackie’s eyes on her. Finally, Jackie asks, “What’s wrong, sweetheart?”
Rose closes her eyes for a long moment. This is the moment she’s been dreading. “Nothing’s wrong, Mum. Just a little distracted, is all.”
“That’s not like you.” In Rose’s peripheral vision, she can see Jackie shaking her head. “You haven’t been eating, either. Is something wrong? Is it John? Has he done something?”
“No!” Rose whips her head around to face Jackie. Her dizziness intensifies, and she wobbles, regretting the sudden movement. “He’d never. Not in a million years.”
“Then what is it?” Jackie presses. “Come on, Rose. I’m worried about you.”
There’s no point hiding it any longer.
“I’m sick,” Rose says, and to her horror she realizes she’s crying. “I’m sick, and I keep getting worse, and we can’t figure out why. I’m tired all the time, and dizzy, and I get these awful headaches—”
“Oh, Rose.” Jackie pulls Rose into a hug, the kind of hug that only a mother can give. “Why didn’t you tell me?”
“I didn’t want you to worry,” Rose explains, trying to talk through her tears. “No one else knows, either. Just John. Can’t hide anything from him.”
Jackie rubs her back. “You shouldn’t have to hide, sweetheart.”
“I don’t want to make a big deal out of it.” Rose closes her eyes. “I’m still here, you know? Living my life.”
“But it doesn’t have to be so hard.” Jackie steps out of the hug, holding Rose in front of her. “You’ve got to take care of yourself, you know.”
“I’m trying.” Rose shrugs out of Jackie’s hold. She’s stopped crying, mostly, although the tears haven’t gone far: she can feel them lying in wait. “I just want to feel okay, is all.”
Jackie looks her up and down with a frown. Finally, she says, “Well, at least let me get you a stool or something to finish up that baking.”
Rose manages a watery smile. “All right, then.”
Jackie disappears, and Rose leans against the counter, staring up at the ceiling. Jackie returns a few moments later, wielding a stool Rose recognizes from the bar area in the dining room. Jackie sets it down, and Rose sits, reaching across the counter to raise the mixer from the batter. She’s worried she’s overmixed it, what with the emotional conversation and all, but even if it comes out horrible, John and Jackie and Pete all like her enough to pretend it’s good, and Tony’s young enough that he probably won’t like it anyway. She focuses on lining the pudding tin with fruit, and for a few minutes she and Jackie work in relative silence.
Until Jackie glances at Rose, a little smile on her face, and says, “Suppose now’s not the best time to tell you I’m pregnant again, is it?”
Rose almost falls off the stool.
“You’re pregnant?” she yelps. “That’s amazing!” She practically leaps from the stool to hug Jackie. “How long have you known?”
“Few months,” Jackie says. “It’s riskier, at my age, you know. Didn’t think I could have another. We didn’t want to tell anybody until we knew for sure.”
“That’s amazing,” Rose repeats. “Really. Do you know what you’re going to call it?”
And they finish out the cooking chattering on about baby names, Rose sitting on her stool and feeling lighter than she has in ages.
Dinner is a huge success. Jackie, of course, has outdone herself, with enough food to feed at least fifteen people. More if one of those people is Rose, who’s being a little less subtle about only putting a few things on her plate. No one brings up Rose’s sickness, but Jackie does tell John about her pregnancy, to John’s delight. And then it’s just Rose and John again, curled together in the darkness.
“I told my mum,” Rose says softly. “Or, she pressured me into telling her.”
“Sounds like her,” John quips, his hand brushing up and down Rose’s arm. “How are you feeling?”
“Tired,” Rose says. It’s true: emotionally, physically, she’s just tired. “It’s been a long couple days.”
“Yeah.” John presses a kiss to the back of her head. “We’ll go home tomorrow and you can rest.”
“Yeah.” Rose sighs. “Rest” doesn’t mean much to her anymore— not when she’s going to be tired no matter what she does. But there’s still another week before she goes back to work, and she’ll make the most of it.
She falls asleep soon after that, trying her hardest not to think about what will happen if she never gets better.

GEICO Nationals High School Basketball Preview
Tumblr media
Debuting back in 2009, this year’s GEICO High School Nationals, to be held in New York City once again, already know their field of contestants, and it is definitely stacked with quality prospects. Per Ballislife’s FAB 50 National Rankings, seven of the eight teams present in the tournament are among the best fifty teams of the nation and will battle for the championship on March 29-31.
These are the seeded matchups, followed by our breakdown and view on how each team arrives at the tournament, including crystal ball predictions for the whole tournament:
#3 University School (FL) v #6 Shadow Mountain (AZ)
The second most-leveled matchup on paper will see University go against Shadow Mountain. First things first: both teams have lost just one game during the season with those from Florida winning 33 and the guys from Arizona getting the W on 25 occasions.
University arrives at the tournament having lost only to Oak Hill (back in January) and with a roster nothing short of a showcase-caliber one. Seniors Trey Doomes and Drue Drinnon (both ranked by 247Sports Composite) are only the starts. Vernon Carey Jr. is the 2019 #2 prospect in the nation and he’s arguably as good as they come already, and he’s joined by Scottie Barnes, the 2020 #6 nationally ranked prospect. Talk about a deep roster.
On his side, Shadow Mountain doesn’t fall short of quality either. Its only loss this year came against Findlay Prep and the Matadors will have the chance to upset University taking advantage of the presence of the likes of 2019 studs Jovan Blacksher and Jaelen House (#111, ASU commit), along soon-to-be-star 2020 SF Shemar Morrow (#64 national). Although the current level of Shadow Mountain may be a notch below that of University School, they got quality wins over their season and could advance without much surprise if they reach their peak.
Not super close, we have #3 University School (FL) advancing here.
#2 Oak Hill Academy (VA) v #7 Garfield (WA)
This starts to get serious as we enter top-2 seed territory in Oak Hill, one of the historically most lauded schools of the whole field (do Melo, Beasley, KD or Jennings ring any bell?). Only at the other side of the ring, the Bulldogs of Garfield and Brandon Roy (HC) will try and make the most of their chance after having lost just one game during the past bunch of months.
As you could expect, Oak Hill comes as loaded as ever, and with more wins than anyone (43 to 1 L). Per 247Sports, the Warriors have three prospects ranked #41 (Will Richardson), #34 (David McCormack, McDonald’s All-American) and #13 (Keldon Johnson, also MD’s All-American) in their 2018 class, but they also boast future 2020 top-end recruit, Josh Hemmings.
Roy’s Garfield team is no slouch either. With a 28-1 record on their season, the Bulldogs will be led by senior PF J’Raan Brooks (#79, USC commit) and junior SG P.J. Fuller (2019 #46, leaning towards committing to the Huskies, thus staying home). Keep an eye on Brandon Roy and his kids because while Oak Hill could easily be slotted as the #1 team in the nation, the boys from Washington could make the unthinkable happen and get to play on Friday.
We have to go #2 Oak Hill all the way here. They’re not the #1 seed just because of that 1 in the L column, but their winning record is staggering.
#4 Findlay Prep (NV) v #5 La Lumiere (IN)
Welcome to the Bol vs. Tyger matchup, point blank. And it couldn’t be more of a contrasting one, so expect fireworks of way different sizes and shapes. You sure know Bol Bolbecause, well, he’s Bol Bol and he is also 7’1″ and he’s headed to Oregon come next college season. And if you haven’t heard of Tyger Campbell, it’s about time you do. The senior is headed to UCLA next year and he can become the second player to reach three consecutive national finals only after Ben Simmons did it with Montverde.
Don’t get fooled, though, because the Bol Show is not all Findlay Prep is made of. The Pilots have four 2018 4-star recruits per 247Sports and are built to win now. Yes, they have flopped during the season and not been able to snatch any gold, but they arrive at the nationals with as good a chance as every other team given they’re more than a ready crop of players.
La Lumiere, last season’s champion, gets on the lower side of the seeded teams while still maintaining the chance of advancing by defeating the lowest high-rank team. We’re talking about a team that lost two key seniors last year on Jaren Jackson, Jordan Poole and Brian Bowen, yet they arrive at the tourney restocked and led by Tyger Campbell and junior C Isaiah Stewart (already ranked 2019 #25 nationally).
Don’t be shocked if La Lumiere pulls the upset, but bet on Bol Bol. #4 Findlay Prep locks a second-round presence with a W.
#1 Montverde Academy (NV) v #8 Lone Peak (UT)
Even for the HS hoops illiterates, Montverde is a name that must be familiar to their ears. Lone Peak, on the other hand, is the ultimate Cinderella of the bracket and the team you want to root for if you are one of those that think the earth is flat.
Undefeated after 33 games, led by some Canadian kid by the name of R.J. Barrett, three-peaters in the past, holders of four top-70 prospects in the class of 2018,… I better stop. The Eagles are eyes-closed the best team of the tournament and they’re playing to prove it, so it’d be no surprise see them fighting –if anyone is able to put up a somewhat serious opposition– for the championship come Saturday.
Lone Peak earned, for some reason, the right to enter the Nationals at the eighth and last seed. Mad props to them for snatching a place among the cream of the crop, but it looks like they can only dream of advancing past Montverde. The Knights have just completed a 23-3 season in which they came close to upset the likes of Oak Hill and DeMatha, something they couldn’t ultimately get to achieve. Frank Jackson came out of Lone Peak, played for Duke, and is waiting for his pro-debut. And that is most of you may know about the Knights and everything they have to back-up their chances.
Call me crazy but Lone Peak beating Montverde would be harder to see that UMBC defeating Virginia as a #16 seed.
Second-Round Predictions
#3 University School vs #2 Oak Hill Academy – Again, no surprise here. Oak Hill has too much quantity and quality in place.
#4 Findlay Prep vs #1 Montverde – No-contest for Montverde, which reaches the final and sends Bol Bol packing home.
National Championship Game Predictions
#2 Oak Hill Academy vs #1 Montverde – Just in case R.J. Barrett had any hardware left to win, he gets crowned the king of NY by lifting the trophy with his Montverde Eagles squad after ousting Oak Hill in a predictable yet packed-of-action tourney.
