The woods hang their breath; fog in the trees, swirling through the limbs of pines. The flurry comes down faster collecting in the strands of Eris's hair and in his sooty eyelashes.

At his side, his blade weighs heavy. The two males continue to talk over the body sprawled in the snow. Their voices ring from far away, lost to the near silence the forest has collected around them in this little clearing.

Azriel makes to take a step toward Eris, but jerks back like a string being pulled taut. He shifts to right the strain, casting a narrow-eyed glance to the barren branches, as if something sits there—watching.

"Would you stop running your mouth and get the knife?" The second male points a long, pale finger to the bag in the snow, having been shucked off in relief when they made it to the clearing.

The knuckles on his fingers are raw, a ruddy red color from dragging a body through the cold. Azriel's shadows follow his gaze, the rage filtered through them that he has no allowance to feel. He watches him; finds the aspects of his face and the clothes he wears and documents it. The male isn't all that impressive, and apart from having the same pointed ears high fae have, he would've easily mistaken him for a lower rank: a farmer, perhaps.

White flakes catch on the dark, muddy brown strands of the fae's hair. He brushes at his runny nose as his beady, dark eyes scan over the clearing.

They sweep over where Azriel is standing, and continue on.

"Got it!" The second male shouts, echoing through the still silent woods. Not a bird calls back. Not a single scamper of little paws through the crunch of snow and twigs answers.

Foolish fae, they should know better than to trust a silent wood. Azriel thinks to himself, the shadows chittering in agreement.

The first male rubs his hands together, the friction faint, his breath pooling like great clouds in front of his narrow face. "Fucking finally." He says, and pulls out a crumpled, awkwardly folded piece of paper from his pocket. "Now, give it here."

He passes the knife over. An unassuming silver shine that catches the watery light, it's hilt wrapped in worn leather. It looks like it would be lost in an armory and never found again.

Azriel feels the muscles along his shoulders tense, his legs stiffening in the snow as if being rooted to the earth. He's much more comfortable with the knife in the second males hand—a little bit awkward, unaware of consequences tied to the blade like a red ribbon.

The shadows go shrill, piercing through the muffled drone of Azriel's thoughts. They bring forth the accompanying jolt of his heart—the twist deep in his stomach as he catches the mad glint in the males eyes as he holds the knife aloft.

"Ten thousand gold marks, Lachlan." He whispers, nearly to himself. There's a sheen on his thin, pale lips from how many times he's licked at them. "And we've got it."

A smile, crooked and strangely excited, grows on Lachlan's face.

Foolish, the shadows whisper, delighting in the wait just as much as Azriel is. Unwise creatures—their spilt blood will be refreshing.

The second male pauses, just enough for Azriel to catch it and take it as his cue.

Five Suggestions on How to Dress for a Heatwave

One of the things I love about living in the Bay Area is the temperate weather -- winters never get too cold, summers are never too hot. At least until this past Labor Day weekend, when California was hit with a record-breaking heatwave. Temperatures in downtown San Francisco soared above 100 for two days, making this City by the Bay feel like Death Valley. So much for that apocryphal Mark Twain line about what summers are like in this town. 

Clothes will never make you feel cooler than it is outside, but I find you can do better or worse depending on what you wear. Jackets are naturally out, but if you choose the right pieces, you can still look great and feel relatively comfortable. Some things that got me through the weekend:

Linen Wicks

Linen is your savior on your hot day -- not because it’s porous and breathes well (linen can be woven as densely or loosely as the mill wants). Instead, it’s because linen wicks, which is what makes it particularly good for shirts. In this sense, linen is one of the world’s first performance fabrics. It draws sweat away from your skin and allows it easily evaporate. Skeptics can test this at home by laundering two shirts -- one cotton, the other linen -- and then leaving both to hang dry. The linen shirt will dry in about a third of the time of cotton. That means, when you wear a linen shirt on a sweltering day, you’ll stay drier and more comfortable. Cotton, on the other hand, will just cling to your sweaty skin. 

Tropical Wool Breathes

It sounds crazy to wear wool trousers on a hot day, but tropical wool is a special class of lightweight fabrics made with an especially open weave (think of it like mesh, but less transparent). This allows body heat to escape and wind to blow through. I find my tropical wool trousers are a lot more comfortable than jeans, chinos, or wool pants made in other weaves. The only exception are loosely woven linen trousers, but those can look like a mess in short time. 

You can find tropical wool trousers at online shops such as Howard Yount and our sponsor Dapper Classics (the second has them in Fresco, which is a brand of tropical wool, just as Kleenex is a brand of facial tissues). In brick-and-mortar stores, most pants aren’t labeled with their correct fabric specifications, but you can test for tropical wool by holding a pair of pants up to the light. If you see a lot of light pour through, like this, you’re holding the real deal. 

Wear Something Interesting

When you pare back an outfit so much, one of the problems is that you can end up looking a bit basic. A well-cut OCBD with slim chinos will always be fine, but it’s also something you’d expect to see at a business conference. If you’re trying to do something a step above, play around the details. 

For example, try something other than your everyday button-ups. Popovers, camp collars, and boldly printed shirts such as Alohas can all be nice. Go for something in an unusual color or pattern, or is cut with interesting details. Some of my favorite hot-weather shirts are from more casual brands, such as Kapital, Visvim, and Two Palms. 

You can also try playing around with the silhouette. Trousers that sit a bit higher up on your waist can give better proportions between your torso and legs (although, without a jacket, you don’t want to go too high). Looser leg lines or carrot-cut fits can also look more interesting than straightforward straight legs. 

See above for some examples: No Man Walks Alone’s model is seen wearing a soft pink, camp collar shirt with cropped, robin’s egg blue chinos. Oscar from Stockholm uses a pair of high-waisted seersucker trousers to transform a basic t-shirt outfit; Jasper in Denver relies on a popover instead of your more common pique-cotton polo. All these are simple outfits, but by using slightly unconventional pieces, you get something more stylish. 

Go for Slip-On Shoes

If you’re looking for summer specific footwear, start with a pair of slip-ons. Penny loafers, camp mocs, and espadrilles are good starting places. This past weekend, I mostly wore my Margiela babouches. Going sockless can be a nice way to feel a bit cooler when the wind blows by, although you’ll want to keep this to strictly casual ensembles. 

Accessorize Well

In the end, if things still feel too boring for you, know how to accessorize well. A colorful Swatch watch can add a point of interest. Western belts and Native American jewelry make for good accompaniments to workwear; thinner one-inch wide leather dress belts lend a little something to a tailored ensemble. If you want to wear socks, I recommend navy cotton ones from our sponsor Dapper Classics (they breathe well). I was also thankful to have a facial wipe or two in my bag over the weekend. They’re basically little towelettes you can use to wipe your face in the middle of the day. A good way to freshen up.

Did anybody notice the news last week? In California … about the Oroville Dam, north of Sacramento?  More than 190,000 people were forced to leave their homes under an evacuation order.  The fear was that a largely earthen emergency spillway could collapse and cause catastrophic floods on the Feather River.

And what of the bushfires and bats in Australia, in the midst of one of the most ferocious heatwaves on record?  Parts of South Australia and Victoria reached 46 °C (115° F), while New South Wales and Queensland recorded temperatures above 47 °C (117° F). Meanwhile, on 03 February, Florida representative Matt Gaetz introduced a bill that would terminate the EPA by the end of 2018. Gaetz, a freshman in Congress, said the EPA’s rules and regulations designed to protect the environment actually hurt people and that the agency has “violated the sovereignty of the states.” Democrats in Congress are not overly concerned that the EPA will be abolished, as Gaetz’ freshman status likely means that he will not have the political clout to push his bill through.  Additionally, to completely abolish the EPA would require repealing a number of laws entrusting the agency with a number of specific environmental responsibilities.

However, Trump still appears to be set to chop the EPA’s budget drastically, and then there are the braying duo, Ebell and Pruitt …  .  Pruitt has spent the better part of his career as attorney general of Oklahoma suing the EPA … in fact he has filed a total of 14 lawsuits against the EPA.  And now he will, in all likelihood, run the agency.

The full senate is set to vote this week on the confirmation of Trump’s choice to lead the EPA, climate-change denier and supporter of the fossil fuel industry, Scott Pruitt. Trump already placed another climate change denier, Myron Ebell, in the position of director of the Center for Energy and Environment. I have written about both Ebell and Pruitt in the past few months.

Recently Pruitt acknowledged the existence of climate change, though he argued that the role of human activity is subject to debate. Just last year he referred to climate change as a ‘religious belief’.  During his confirmation hearing, Pruitt was asked by Senator Bernie Sanders about his personal opinion on the link between climate change and human activity, Pruitt demurred, claiming his opinion would be immaterial to his job as EPA administrator.  I love Sanders response:

“Really? You are going to be the head of the agency to protect the environment, and your personal feelings about whether climate change is caused by human activity and carbon emissions is immaterial?”

Much can and should be argued in favour of continuing research into climate science, additional regulations to reduce carbon emissions, and a number of other initiatives for which the EPA has been responsible, but I and others have said it all before.  The question before us today is what will happen to the EPA and how will it affect the earth’s future?  Fortunately, other nations are taking climate change seriously and will continue to do so even if the U.S. backs out of the Paris Climate Accord.  However, every nation needs to do its part, lest heat waves, droughts, floods, and melting polar ice caps become the norm.  It is interesting that the representative who wants to do away with the EPA is from Florida, a state where they are already fighting against rising sea levels.

We can hope that the senate, seeing the chaos the Trump administration has been this past week, has begun to shed its collective rose-tinted glasses and will vote with their minds and consciences when the Pruitt confirmation comes to the floor for a vote, but I am not counting on it.  Perhaps somebody should take them, in their stuffy suits and ties, to Australia and leave them for a week … then perhaps they would understand.  Probably not, but it is fun to think about, yes?
