"She told me you happened to come across them when you were out scavenging, completely by accident." One of Carol's eyebrows cocked up, but Daryl's hands were still busy at work sharpening his bolts and he didn't even look over at her.

"What's yer point?" he drawled.

"Happened t—Daryl! We both know you've been purposely out looking for those books for her for months! And you're not even gonna take credit for your good deed?!" she asked, flabbergasted. "Explain that to me! Do you like her or not?!"

"Shush!" Daryl snapped at her. "I—I didn't wanna make a big deal outta it." At that moment you happened to come walking by with your nose already buried in a book and that same smile fixed on your face. Daryl watched you passing with a flush in his cheeks.

"So, you lied to her? Instead of just telling her—"

"Shush!" he said again. "Goddamn, woman! Alrigh', so I lied, just a little bit! But—look how happy it made her," he said. "S'just a little white lie, anyway..."

"Listen to me—if you don't tell her how you feel, I damn well will." She ruffled his hair to annoy him and walked off. And Daryl didn't doubt for a second that Carol would.
