In Hannibal, a mentally ill man isn't abused by his therapist. Get your understanding and your facts right. If you don't enjoy dark subject matters like cannibalism and murder, why were you watching Hannibal, from where you get the right to talk about 'moral compass' in fiction ? I won't write to you again, just letting you know you understood nothing about the dark layered parabolic style.
OMG, finally, my first accusation of incompetence by an anon!! What a momentous occasion, I can’t believe it took 4 years!! I should celebrate this tumblr milestone.
Look. I actually have been a victim of psychiatric malpractice. I see that relationship as a tangle of emotional and psychological abuse. You can disagree with that, that’s fine. But don’t come in here telling me I’m watching a show wrong. But also, art is subjective. I’m the last person who’s going to try to moralize a ship or a show. Like. I like Game of Thrones. Jaime and Cersei are one of my favorite romantic pairings, and their relationship is a MESS. One of my favorite movies is Ex Machina, and that one ends with a robot lady stringing along a perfectly innocent man and then leaving him to starve and die in the middle of nowhere. Another one of my favorite movies is Earthquake Bird, which is about a love triangle that ends in death and ALSO involves a dishonest serial killer.
HOWEVER, it’s all in the framing. When I talk about these works, I’m not calling them a secret rom-com. I’m not saying they’re the Height of Romance. I call them for what they are: two horrible people in a horrible relationship. The point of my pinned post is not and has never been to “call people out” for shipping a “bad ship.” I SHIP DAVOS AND MELISANDRE AND ALL HE DID THE PAST FEW SEASONS WAS TALK ABOUT HOW HE WANTS TO KILL HER. I DON’T. CARE. ABOUT. “BAD.” SHIPS. It’s how we as fandoms TALK about neurodivergence in fiction. It’s how I and all the other people like me always get left out of these talks. It’s how I get anons like you telling me I have a lack of reading (or, I guess watching?) comprehension and accuse me of being an anti over a post about how I don’t like sacred show Hannibal and sacred ship Hannigram, but every time I actually try to have a conversation about neurodivergence representation, I get ZERO kind of interaction at all. It’s the fact that everyone in all fandom circles I’ve ever seen is ALWAYS more than willing to talk about the ups and downs of queer representation, but when I try to talk about having more mentally ill characters, they tell me to shut up and that I should be content with neurotypical gay characters because that’s more important. The point of my pinned post is that people are more than willing defend “problematic” (I really hate that word, but I can’t find a better one at the moment) gay characters and gay ships, but the SECOND I try to talk about mentally ill/neurodivergent characters, I always get criticized and picked apart for whatever I have to say about them. The fact of the matter is that OFTEN, queer ships are frequently seen as “perfect” or “sweet” or “healthy/an expression of realistic love everyone should strive for” instead of just ADMITTING THAT THEY’RE PROBLEMATIC. Literally if I saw even ONE post where ANYONE admitted that these dynamics/characters/whatever are dark and screwed up, I would be fine. But I keep seeing y’all seriously call Hannibal a rom-com. Like. Not even as an inside joke. A completely serious label. Not even a dark rom-com or a black comedy. Just. A rom-com. That’s the thing I take issue with, not the fact that Hannibal is “dark” or “problematic.” I don’t care. I legitimately cannot reiterate that enough.
Also...where you see Dark Layered Parabolic Style, I see pretentiousness to the point of silliness because I don’t think that style was effectively done. Art is subjective. I can understand something and still not like it, that’s literally the whole point of what art is.
This is NOT ABOUT SHIPPING. IT’S NOT ABOUT BEING A PURITY POLICE OFFICER. It’s about the discrepancy of how we talk about one underrepresented group I am a part of versus another one I’m also a part of. It’s about the fact that, at least in my own personal experience, part of me has ALWAYS been erased. EVERY SINGLE TIME I have tried to have a broader conversation about representation I have been told that “I should wait for neurodivergent representation because right now gay representation is more important.” I am tired.
You can hate me, or think I’m stupid, or whatever. Honestly, I don’t really care, especially since you can’t even say it to my face and hide behind the fact that I have anonymous submissions on for the sake of any followers who might have social anxiety. This anon post suggests you aren’t actually interested in having any kind of respectful discussion about mental illness in fiction and its stigmatization in real life, which, I remind you, reflects THE WHOLE POINT. OF THAT POST.
You want to accuse me of being a moralizing idiot? Come off anon and say it to my face. You have a problem with my opinions on a COMPLETELY FICTIONAL PAIRING? Then just block me. I haven’t decided if I’m going to answer the Ratched post because I only have so much energy and I know you’re not reading these anyway.
#hey! my first anon hate! someone should bake me a cake LMAO#tbh I have a feeling who this is so if it's her...sorry girl just unfollow me#asks#anti hannibal#anti hannigram#am I a Controversial Blog™ now?#have I officially become Bad Bisexual Rep™?#the real horror was the ableism we found along the way

okay so I’m alone in my dorm @ uni and I’m bored as all hell & i’ve has a recent fascination w old movies??? & u reblog stuff about old movies all the time so I’m just wondering if u have any suggestions?? I wanna watch some good/fun ones but I have no idea how to find the ones that don’t suck!! always a sucker for the ones that have gay subtext but like. any suggestions at all would be so appreciated thank u queen
oooooh yes!!!!!!! you came to just the place! im just gonna list some of my faves, hang on cause this is gonna be a LONG one (im not sure what your cutoff for Old is so i just went with 1960)
silent:
wings: really well done visually, also features the first gay kiss in history (ofc the context is different, but it’s there!)
nosferatu: the legendary spongebob character’s origin story! the music is wonderful in this, it’s very Artsy, just one of the greatest horror movies ever (it’s a bit slow at times but most silent films are)
the cabinet of dr caligari: REALLY cool from an art perspective, the sets are incredible, i love german expressionism, another great one for when you’re in the mood to get Spooky
steamboat bill, jr: buster keaton is a legend for a reason, this is my personal favorite of his. theres also something very unique and charming about silent film slapstick that i just adore, and this is a wonderful showcase of it!
the gold rush: basically the same reasoning as above, but with charlie chaplin. also this movie has a lot of genuine emotion you dont often get from silent comedies!
sunrise: a song of two humans: a must-see for silent films, it has super intriguing visual effects that really give a dreamlike quality to it, as well as great acting for the limited medium
show people: a really sweet classic romance that also gives you a nice (if not totally accurate) taste of The Movie Biz @ the time
metropolis: one of the first sci fi movies ever. visually STUNNING like nothing ive ever seen, also a bit of a workers of the world unite moment
noir/drama/general Serious Stuff:
the big sleep: SEXY! the plot is hard to follow but it’s worth it for the characters and also just all i can say is. hot - it’s about a murder or two!
the maltese falcon: actually makes sense and like. Says Stuff abt humanity. gripping plot and nuanced characters -about a bird statue and the knights templar also human nature but also who could forget a murder or two!
sunset boulevard: absolutely enthralling characters, script, plot, performances, all of it! - it’s about a murder!
rebel without a cause: HUGE gay subtext with this one, one of the original Teen Movies
kiss me deadly: interesting!!!!! i was intrigued from start to finish w this one and you probably will be too
strangers on a train: one o those Psychological Thrillers, interesting n well acted - it’s about The Concept of Murder
north by northwest: super fast paced spy action movie that also #makes you think
murder, my sweet: another classic phillip marlowe story with that fast talkin detective dialogue i love so much - it’s about a murder! (my sweet)
double indemnity: the height of Cynicism in noir, not even any detectives in this just bad deeds and Tension -it’s about a murder or two!
key largo: just a hotel full of intriguing characters all At Odds with each other and the concept of heroism
random harvest: kinda cheesy amnesia plot but comes across well with good acting and dialogue
the lady vanishes: about a lady. who vanishes. funny at times and has that Classic hitchcock tension before he really landed on his final style
casablanca: “here’s lookin at you kid” “i think this is the beginning of a beautiful friendship” just. one of the most iconic movies of the whole Classic Era and for good reason!
to have and have not: basically casablanca BUT consider this- i love Them (them being humphrey bogart and lauren bacall)
comedy/romance/general Light Stuff:
the thin man series: one of my absolute all time favorites! it’s just a story about two rich people who only love each other and alcohol getting dragged into solving various mysteries. my favorite thing about this is how much you can tell they love each other, like they’ve been married for years and just banter back and forth in a way founded on mutual respect n adoration which is So refreshing to see in classic movies!
it happened one night: i ADORE this movie! it’s a classic road trip comedy with a ton of bizarre side characters and hijinks, and also basically Invented the rom com genre. they’re also genuinely in love in a very cute way! it’s just sweet and fun and one of my fav movies of all time
arsenic and old lace: a dark comedy about old lady serial killers, brothers who think theyre theodore roosevelt and frankenstein (respectively), and Love. it’s super bizarre but a real joy to watch!
it’s a wonderful life: makes me sob every single time and leaves ya with that fuzzy warm feeling inside (recommended for christmas/winter viewing)
duck soup: i mean it’s the most iconic marx brothers movie, what more can i say!
bringing up baby: just a real wacky romp where it’s the lady and the tiger, with a whole lot of silly comedy
my man godfrey: makes fun of rich people n has a big loud ensemble cast (also romance)
the shop around the corner: they fall in love through letters but hate each other in real life! :0! bonus points for jimmy stewart’s voice
abbott and costello meet frankenstein: the title says it all. completely joyfully stupid movies like these are a big reason why i love old movies!
roman holiday: audrey hepburn’s debut movie. really sweet, has an ending that makes me cry
death takes a holiday: super interesting experimental concept not seen often in this era - Death literally takes a holiday and has to deal w life n love n all that
sabrina: a very nice and well acted little romance/cinderalla story w sprinkle of comedy
the philadelphia story: another Classique rom com with a love triangle n some nice fast-paced witty dialogue
musicals:
singin in the rain: one of the first classic movies i ever remember loving. every second of it is just. ah chef kiss

Problematic coded villains and stuff of that nature#ok i realize this is much more than you asked for but you cant just hit me w an ask abt my hyperfixations n expect anything less#ok fiona#movin pictures

honestly if u got good gay movie recs... i would totally appreciate them! i’ve seen most of the popular good ones but i’d love to hear abt more
Just in case you or other people have missed one of the more popular ones, I want to start by saying But I’m a Cheerleader is my favorite and is at the top of most lesbian movie lists for a good reason. A lot of other lists have included the movies Imagine Me & You, Carol, and The Handmaiden, which are also all great. Almost everyone has heard of Blue is the Warmest Color, which I’ve only seen once a long time ago but would not recommend because of the way the director treated the actresses especially during the filming of the sex scene.
Anyways this list became more detailed than I originally intended so I’m just gonna put my recs below the cut lol
Movies that aren’t sad (or are only partially sad):
Desert Hearts (1985) - one of the first (if not the first) movies about a romantic relationship between women that doesn’t end in one or both of them dying or leaving the other to be with a man. Directed by Donna Deitch who is gay.
D.E.B.S. (2004) - probably the most fun/light hearted movie I’ve seen that’s centered around a romance between two women. It’s a cheesy movie about a spy who falls in love with a villain and is written and directed by Angela Robinson who is bi.
The Incredibly True Adventure of Two Girls In Love (1995) - cute and kinda cheesy teen rom com written and directed by Maria Maggenti who is bi.
The Watermelon Woman (1996) - a lesbian filmmaker works on a documentary about a black actress from the 1930s. The film explores themes of how there are gaps in recorded history, and how race effects relationships. It was written and directed by Cheryl Dunye, making it the first (known/more popular) feature film directed by a black lesbian.
If These Walls Could Talk 2 (2000) - explores the lives of three lesbian couples who happened to live in the same house at different periods of time. The first part takes place in 1961 and is sad, the second part takes place in 1972 and is the part all those butch Chloe Sevigny gifs are from, and the last part takes place in 2000 and stars Ellen.
Saving Face (2004) - super cute and good rom com about a Chinese American lesbian and her traditionalist mother written and directed by Alice Wu who is a lesbian.
The Runaways (2010) - if ur gay for rock n roll please watch this. I love bicon Joan Jett
Cloudburst (2011) - about an older lesbian couple who go on a road trip to get married and the ending is kind of sad but it’s worth watching imo.
Pariah (2011) - about a butch lesbian teenager growing up in Brooklyn. It’s really sad in some parts but by the end she’s very at peace with herself. Written and directed by Dee Rees who is a lesbian.
Life Partners (2014) - cute movie about the friendship between a straight woman and a lesbian and how their friendship changes when the straight woman gets married
Boy Meets Girl (2015) - about a bisexual trans girl (played by a trans actress) who wants to go to college be a fashion designerGrandma (2015) - Lily Tomlin plays a lesbian grandma who helps her granddaughter get money to have an abortion
Dope (2015) - tbh the lesbian isn’t even the main character, but it’s a cute movie and Kiersey Clemons is hot so it’s on here anyway
The Intervention (2016) - Clea DuVall and Natasha Lyonne play a couple again, Melanie Lynskey and Alia Shawkat are also in it. Written and directed by Clea DuVall who is a lesbianProfessor Marston and the Wonder Women (2017) - probably not super historically accurate tbh but it’s about the polyamorous relationship between the creator of Wonder Woman, his wife, and their lover. I was pleasantly surprised that the movie focused just as much if not more on the relationship between the two women as it did on their relationship to the man. It is written and directed by Angela Robinson, a bi woman.
Battle of the Sexes (2017) - I know people on here don’t like Emma Stone but Billie Jean King is cool as fuck, the scenes between her and Marilyn were beautiful, and this movie was underrated
Movies that are pretty sad throughout but good:
Fried Green Tomatoes (1991) - not as gay as the book and the ending (and other parts) are sad, but I would die for the main character (and butch icon) Idgie.
Lovesong (2016) - two women are probably in love with each other go on a road trip but one of them is getting married to a man :( the other one is played by Jenna Malone though who I’ve been wanting to play gay since she played Johanna in the Hunger Games so :) ?
Novitiate (2017) - lesbian nuns, Catholic guilt, idk it’s good though
Movies that didn’t necessarily fit into the other categories because they are either intense, weird, and/or involve murder:
Born in Flames (1983) - I wasn’t really sure what category to put this movie in since its style is so different from the others, but it’s about activists fighting for women’s liberation in a fictional version of the US where there has been a socialist revolution that promised to make things better, but put off women’s rights in the process. Anyone interested in feminism and leftist politics should check it out. It was made by Lizzie Borden, who is bisexual.
Heavenly Creatures (1994) - a movie about a super intense childhood friendship that gets pretty dark, which I know it’s a trope, but I liked this movie anyway idk
Mulholland Drive (2001) - the most real thing in this movie about surrealist Hollywood was the relationship between the two women
Monster (2003) - based on the life of serial killer Aileen Wuornos. It’s super violent/depressing/disturbing, but worth the watch imo. Directed by Patty Jenkins who directed Wonder Woman.
Jennifer’s Body (2009) - some people like to argue over whether they were actually gay or not but like…they were…it was also directed and written by women.
Addicted to Fresno (2015) - two sisters accidentally murder someone and try to cover it up. Written by Karey Dornetto who is gay and directed by Jamie Babbit who is a lesbian and also wrote/directed But I’m a Cheerleader.
Women Who Kill (2016) - about exes who are true crime podcasters. One of them starts dating someone and the other thinks her new girlfriend might be a murderer. Super interesting and can be interpreted as a metaphor for internalized homophobia. Written and directed by Ingrid Jungermann who is gay.
Atomic Blonde (2017) - bisexual spy Charlize Theron. I am gay. It falls into some bad tropes but I. Am. Gay.
Thelma (2017) - a Norwegian movie about a lesbian with supernatural abilities. It might be my favorite movie of 2017 tbh.
Documentaries:
Out in the Night (2014) - a really depressing and frustrating doc about a group of black lesbians who were unfairly imprisoned after fighting back against their attacker
Gender Troubles: The Butches (2016) - a doc about butches and gender presentation
Movies that are coming out soon that I wanna see:
Colette
Duck Butter
Hearts Beat Loud
Lizzie
The Miseducation of Cameron Post
Tully
Vita and Virginia
Wild Nights With Emily
