My 612 Jordayla Analysis/Commentary and Breakdowns pt 2

Okay let's continue from part one

The second part of this house/children arc for Jordayla was to show maturity and growth on Jordan’s end. Like he mentioned to Asher, he always wanted to get married but he never thought past the “I do” phase and what that means for him.  This is a sharp contrast to Jimone where he was just focused on marrying Simone and not thinking at all about the future. It is a huge character development on Jordan’s end to think about the future and what he wants life to be with Layla. To be honest, if I didn’t see this in the writing, then all the character development for him this whole season 6 would be wasted. 

As we have seen him act so maturely in taking care of Layla, that sense of responsibility should be carried forward and this was a perfect arc to do so. Seeing him recognize the enormous responsibility of being a husband and (possibly) a father and seeing him process that with someone who shares similar traits with him (Asher) is a huge step up for Jordan. This time around, he understands that he is marrying Layla and he is going to spend the rest of his life with her. He knows it is important that certain things need to be handled and as the head of his family, he needs to think about his family’s future. In season 3, we had Laura talk to him about realizing what a huge step he was taking as he planned to marry Simone. This time around, we see Jordan understand by himself and think it through without the need to be told or warned. 

So Jordan comes back home and tries to bring up the whole living situation stuff and the whole baby talk. Layla, though, is laser focused on getting the seating chart done. They share some childhood memories about Jordan and Olivia’s goldfish that died in his care. Is it me or was this episode packed with so much callback to Jordayla and their childhood. Even with Asher and Olivia, we had some childhood callbacks. I can’t keep hearing about these childhood moments without seeing at least one childhood flashback. I just can’t. I need the TV gods to answer my prayers and give me something for this wedding episode.

Anyway, I was initially kind of nervous when Layla didn’t want to talk about the house and baby stuff. I was low key worried that she was being evasive but the final Jordayla conversation eventually  eased my worry. The pressing issue now was for Jordan to pick his best man so Layla can complete the seating chart. I thought this was sort of a flip in their dynamic from previous episodes. In early episodes, you can see Jordan be the one to point out what needs to be done to Layla. This was the dynamic as she was in recovery. In this episode, you can see Jordan sort of rub off on Layla as she wants Jordan to focus on what is important , which is picking his best man. 

So Jordan goes to see Asher and they talk. This was a very important scene in the whole episode because it really tied up and explained so many nuances in the show. It also reminded us of what Asher and Jordan have as friends and how far they have come. 

Before diving into Jordan and Asher and how it relates to Jordayla, I want to break down the best man storyline. First of all, congratulations to Asher for landing the role. As the character that had the true picture of Jordan’s love for Layla, he was actually the best option as the best man. I don’t even think Olivia was fully aware that Jordan liked Layla as a child. Asher would likely be the only character to know this and possibly, JJ. 

Since the Jordayla engagement happened, I have always put my money on Asher being the best man for the Jordayla wedding.

Callback to season 3 and the Jimone wedding. That was actually the foreshadowing that Asher was going to be best man. Apart from the pact they made as kids, in that wedding episode we actually had Asher do stuff that typically gets reserved for the best man. He helped Jordan get ready for the engagement party and he was the one that gave a toast. Even Spencer was like “you should have been the best man”. This was what made me call Asher to be the best man for the Jordayla wedding and I stuck with that theory till this moment.

So immediately I saw the synopsis for 612, I knew it was going to be Asher. 

Spencer is the obvious choice and most fans were actually predicting that the role was going to fall to Spencer. However, if there is anything I have picked from the writing on AA is how they don’t often do the obvious. Since Spencer was the obvious choice and we had an arc that follows Jordan as he makes the decision about who will be his best man, it actually meant the best man role will fall to Asher and not Spencer. Another reason why I knew it would not be Spencer was because Spencer was best man for the Jimone Vegas wedding. One thing the writing has been keen on doing is to contrast Jimone with Jordayla. This means not repeating what happened exactly with Jimone. So with Olivia being maid of honor (there was no doubt about this), I knew it would not be Spencer to show a difference with the Jimone wedding.

We also had the writing have Asher and Olivia interact a bit more this season, starting with Olivia looking after AJ and when they talked about reconnecting in relationships in 611. I knew the writing was heading somewhere with those small moments and it was likely going to end with them being best man and maid of honor for the Jordayla wedding. 

Now let us talk about Asher- Jordan and Layla and the past they shared together in the next part of this piece.

Jace is being possessed by Lilith. He’s the owl or whatever that was. In a small moment of clarity he sneaks off to Simons apartment because thinking of that nerd makes him feel a little bit safer. He climbs through the window and in the ungraceful fall from said window, he wakes up the vampire. Simon is very confused but notices how tired Jace looks. He cautiously walks over to him and gently places a hand on his shoulder. Jace snaps to attention, without thinking, embraces Simon in the tightest most uncharacteristic hug. Simon is stunned for a moment but quickly reciprocates the action. After a few minutes pass, Jace pulls his face away from Simons shoulder and simply stares at the vampire for a second. Then his lips or on slightly colder ones. For the second time that night Simon is stunned. However, he quickly recovers and returns the kiss. It’s all hands and quick movements from there. They can’t get enough of each other. And in these passionate actions, Jace has finally found the clarity he’s been searching for for weeks. They fall into bed and I don’t know how to write the rest of this scene but you get what I’m going for.

It’s a few weeks later and Jace is no longer in control and attacking all his friends. They are doing what they can to stop him but nothing is working. Every attack is failing. Jace is too strong under Lilith’s control. Everyone is either out cold or too hurt to fight anymore. Simon has been able to withstand the blows the longest and is now the last one standing. Jace has him cornered and is getting closer and closer to ending it. To winning. All Simon can do is accept it. He up against a wall and the man he was starting to love is about to kill him and his friends. Simon simply looks into his eyes one last time. There’s only a foot between them and Simon wants nothing more than to close that space. He has nothing left to lose so he does what he wants. He on Jace before the man can throw a punch. When their lips meet everything stops. Jace isn’t moving. But after a split second there is movement from the other end. Simon didn’t expect any sort of reciprocation and pulls back to get a better look. What he sees staring back is the man he knew. It the Owl. Not the soldier under the demon queens control. He sees Jace.

I’m a really bad writer and I swear these ideas are better in my head but I can’t keeps them in there forever so have this anyway.

This is loosely based off a fic I read on ao3 called “joke” it’s Jimon obviously. However the account is orphaned so that’s a little sad cause I really love the story they wrote. It’s basically the first part of mine but a bit different. And the second part of mine is how I wish they had ended it if they had written a second chapter or continued their story in anyway. But it’s really good and o would definitely give their story a read.

Do you have any late thoughts on the proposal

Thank you for asking (ages ago - I am SO SORRY)!

I haven’t thought about All American too much during this hiatus but here’s some thought dumps. 

Jordan’s relationship with Layla has been a vehicle for displaying Jordan’s character development. He summed up his entire year with the word “maturity” and pretty much his primary plot in S5 was Layla. He is more mature now and we see it in his relationship with Layla. As a fan of Jordan and Jordayla, I’m happy to see how his character journey continues through the marriage chapter of life, and how it’s good and right. When he got married the first time, he didn’t ask his parents, he didn’t put in the work into the marriage afterwards, he didn’t tell his friends about it, he just did not go about it in a way that set them up to be successful at all. This time will be different. I did want to have heard his reflections but we’ll see them for sure.

In the last episode, Layla was the mouthpiece for the cons for marriage. I just can’t wait to hear them describe their decision and relationship. 

I just LOVE the later parts of a ship where we look over their past moments (Did anybody else just watch the Rina flashback montage in hsmtmts S4?!). When they call back to prom etc, when I hear their vows, I fear I won’t survive.

In S3, it comes up repeatedly that Jimone thought that marriage would turn their love “real”, whereas Jordayla’s love is very much already REAL. I did want to make a post about this but just don't have it in me to rewatch S3 lol.

To revisit their best friends era, just rewatch S4. To revisit their dating era, just rewatch S5. It doesn’t matter if it's too soon for them to get married, just watch S6 when you’re ready hahaha. I’m happy that a married era is being filmed and released of our favourite couple, who wouldn't be?

A cute thing – When he’s advising Asher about Jaymee, he talks about her being “not afraid to live.” Similar to 5x20, when talking about Jasher, we can hear into his thoughts about his own relationship. One of the main reasons for proposing is that after his traumatic experience, he’s eager to live, and he can only see himself doing it with one person. We see this theme repeatedly: “He wants to start a life with her” / “I don’t want to spend a day of my life without you knowing.” Also, whilst he’s giving relationship advice, Layla is heart eyeing him hard and it takes me back to the first time she caught feelings for him when he was giving relationship advice about Clay during the prom dance and she’s taken aback by that sincere passionate side of him. It’s still something that makes her swoon!

I’ve enjoyed their love story happening away from everyone, a little nervous for them to be in the middle of the spotlight. Oh, and I hope the marriage process is not to Billy-centric, hearing his name in the proposal almost sent me over the edge. Realistically, I know he’ll come up but I just won’t love it. 

I think the writers always (as much as a fan can ask for) get them right and will continue to.

I was wondering about something and I really would like your input, Dani.

You know how writers like to play with a lot of different ships, and some are really liked already like Clizzy and Jimon and Saphael. And fair, people can write what they like and feel more comfortable with.

But the thing is, in a lot of stories with those ships and Malec, Alec is still the one who suffers for being gay, even when his siblings are already out. He is either in the closet still or is the one who solely takes all the figurative punches from Maryse and Robert for his sexuality. It's like... Alec is the only one not allowed to be anything but straight. Do you think it's because of the first kid dilemma? The one to carry all the responsibilities and family legacy?

Furthermore, if his siblings were really not straight, even in canon, do you think he would be more acceptable of himself or it wouldn't matter and he would continue to be the grumpy boy too afraid of anything until one Magnus Bane?

Interesting question.

I think the first one is very much a writing choice. If it's a malec centric fic, then giving Alec more obstacles makes more sense. It could be for any of the reasons you mentioned. I do think things such as family dynamics and birth order play a role. For example, my mom lets me do things she never would've allowed my older sister (first born) to do because by the time I became a teenager, she was more exposed to things and her parenting style with me is different too. I also think Alec (to a certain extent) would have been passive to his parent's expectations/conditions, whereas I can see Izzy (not Jace though) fighting back against her parents if they tried to control her.

If Jace and Izzy were not straight....hm, I think it would've helped but not much. I think it would've made him come to them - because he knew they'd understand. He would've been open to having casual relationships and experimenting and all of that.

But Alec's position in the family and Clave are very different from that of Izzy and Jace, so I think those things still would've prevented him from coming out/accepting himself.

I personally don't believe that Alec would've been in the closet forever if it wasn't for Magnus because it reduces Alec's strength and fearlessness to Magnus and their relationship.

Alec came out because of Magnus. But he didn't come out for him. He did that for himself :)

May you please give clarity on the below, just as a disclaimer Jordan is in my top 2 faves on the show so I'm not sure whether I have a blind spot to the things he says because I don't think he tries to be malicious most of the time and I do understand that just because his intentions aren't malicious it does not mean his actions or words don't hurt or aren't disrespectful.

In 4x20 when he said the for a wedding that never happened I thought he meant it literally as in she actually wasn't a bridesmaid so she actually can't use that excuse, I saw online that a lot of people believed he was denouncing or belittling jimone and I didn't take to mean that, what's your take.

In 5x01 his conversation with Simone where he asks about Damon I think he wanted to end the awkwardness and fast forward to them being friends and he was genuinely happy in his life and had hoped she was too, her reaction was to take offence which I get because what Jordan thought was actually not the case and he life wasn't going as well.

In 5x08 the wife comment, I took it in the literal sense to make his point that his relationship with Simone ran a lot deeper than Layla and Simone which is true, I saw the outrage online and people saying that it's just another indication that he still loves Simone.

I think he absolutely meant to belittle his past with Simone. He was so far gone for Layla in that moment. And she's saying, "uhhhh... sir?? You were in a VERY serious relationship that included two weddings." and he's like, "if that's what's keeping you from being with me, the wedding never happened????" He was grasping at straws and knew what he was saying was wild. Which is why he didn't push after that.

Well, if he just wanted to talk about her life, he could've brought up anything other than Damon. I think he asked about Damon to assuage his own guilt for moving on with Layla. He held on to this belief that they both fell for other people and were in much better places. They were forming and nurturing these new bonds that they were really, really excited about. Unfortunately, Simone's story didn't quite pan out as cleanly as Jordan's. I also think he brought up Damon to test the waters. How cool of exes were they gonna be? How happy would they be for each other?

I agree with you. He had every right to compare their relationships with Simone. He felt left out and blindsided. And he was like, "um, pardon?? Who let you call the shots about this?" The anger he threw at her wasn't great, but he wasn't wrong in his argument. It's why she apologized so quickly once the ice had thawed. Layla flying to Atlanta to tell Simone about them without talking to him first was a wild thing to do.

ares teikoku. take my hand brother together we can fix it. first kazemaru and kageyama have got to go. teikoku does not need a reinforcement committee member, and fudou (sighs) is already there to shake things up i guess. shimerigawa can stay i guess he could illustrate the change in attitude of the rest of teikoku towards the team after kidou left. kazemaru can go to the ninja school at least they could use his speed. i just dont like him sorry hes messing up the vibe

kageyama needs to stay in prison since theres no aliea to break him out, and i also need him to stay behind bars to have some conversations with kidou who always leaves very frustrated and wonders why he keeps coming back for answers that kageyama wont give. also its very bad writing to have teikoku break free from kageyama and kageyama throw them away, and then coming back for no reason. even if kageyama WAS somehow released he would not fucking go back to teikoku LOL hed just make shin teikoku again without alien help to get revenge. and he certainly wouldnt help the kids who betrayed him to grow like he did in ares by acting as their common enemy.

now this is controversial. but genda is the captain. genda was teikokus second in command in s1. kidou leaves genda to lead practice when hes away. genda speaks for the team when kidou decides to stop following kageyamas orders. etc etc like he was most likely the vice captain back then so why on earth is sakuma the captain now? hes a follower and i dont mean this negatively thats just how he is. sakuma is only the 3rd best choice for next captain, after genda and jimon. thats just how it is. (though i get that its meant to be like his chance to grow out of his insecurities re: kidou and avoid the shin teikoku debacle as suggested by inapen but like. guys. theres no aliea. theres no meteorite. there wont be a shin teikoku)

My random thoughts ( might be spoilers idk idc sorry):

Jordan and Simone being soft as fuck with their current relationships bc they did that with each other first. HELP! They brought that out of each other. It’s a little fast for some of these lines but… some how it’s fitting bc Jordan was always the girl obsessed boyfriend. Now PLEASE PLEASE! Send both Limone and Jordan / Layla on a damn date in a public setting. If I see that studio one more time.

I truly want to see Layla with an actual storyline. Like I am so serious. A stan got mad that I asked but like what is it??? She’s been doing music since what s2??? She had the depression one / almost dying one but outside of this music, what else is there??? Give her something! Sure there is Jordan but come on now. Girls can be more than a love interest!

I want to see her connect with Liv again and work on rebuilding their friendship. It just feels like they are roommates. Even Layla didn’t believe Liv 😭

I want to see her maybe explore college even if it’s just online or night classes. I want her to go to therapy for her issues with JP’s raggedy ass. We need to see it on screen. It just feels like she had lost herself then found herself again then it just stopped. These are 18 / 19 year old young adults… who was career orientated at that age lmao.

It was great to see Patience do something. However, her story line still sucks and she still has no love interest. why does coop get one?! I do not trust that fan girl. It’s giving Carrie 2.0 and VORTEX FANDOM? Nasty. They need to dead that work immediately, I am so serious. It’d be nice to see Patience bond with Jaymee or something.

She is mostly seen with Layla obviously ( Latience rights granted it will never happen!) but we need to move on from Catience and have P do whatever she wanna do musically bc a tour?? When the album flopped does not make sense. If they want drama for Patience, have Clay snatch her up.

I need all the girls to flourish and have fun on this show ( HC too! Coop too!) bc the men having fun / throwing parties / having story lines etc is very very annoying at this point. Just wanna put this disclaimer out before anyone starts reading under the cut: Despite this ask & post and my own feelings about the show, it has been really heartwarming to see BIPOC fans delight in this show and my fandom friends gushing to me about this :D That is something no one can take away from them and I'm very glad they enjoyed it!

All in all to say the Kosem copying was bad and it should be called out but the Barbie references are all in good fun!

Since this is the main ask I've gotten about the show, I'm also going to put my main thoughts here and I don't think I'll be answering any follow up asks because every take has kind of been said and done. I really don't have much to add on since I'm not ever going to watch the show either.

Outside of the show, I adoree that India and Arsema are getting their flowers and the couple is being promoted how they should be! It's all well deserved. A small part of me does feel sad because if this is the PR team going all out, where was all this fanfare for S2, Jimone and Kathony?

However, based on what I've been told:

- I'm glad the chemistry between QC and George was good and everyone enjoyed their romance

- Who on the team hates LD?? Because COME ON martial rape AND giving her a not-hot older man IN VIOLET'S DAD OF ALL PEOPLE?? They did her so dirty. Idc if Lord Ledger gave her the first orgasm of her life, I see that man and no thank you. My girl deserved someone as hot as Adolphus!

- These two things is a HUGE reason why I can't watch the show cos of my triggers: I hate hate how gratuitous they were with the torture porn - both with LD's scenes with her husband (FOURRRR MARTIAL RAPE SCENES THAT'S LAUGHED OFF AS A GAG???) and George getting waterboarded for his mental illness. As someone who experienced SA and has a mental illness, these are very sore subjects for me so no thank you QC, but I will not be tuning in.

Anyway to close this out, congrats to the cast for doing a great job and whoever enjoyed the show, I'm glad you did! Those who read this and agree with me, just know you aren't alone in your critiques of the show.
