On yuri's effect on me and my writing

I'm not sure when exactly I started really trying to emulate yuri in my writing, but it has been really rewarding for me. I know about when it happened - after reading Girl Friends for the first time and the first cracks in my egg started to form. My straight romances started feeling...flat. The connections between the women characters felt deeper and more rewarding.

For a while I had some drafts of a fantasy project that eventually became Rising Shards where I didn't put anyone together and hoped that the eventual audience would want the girls together. A small seed within me was slowly growing even if I didn't get it yet. When I first decided to try a draft of Rising Shards with a romantic focus on Zeta and Oka, I was really scared. Can I even do this? Did I have the right to? My gender identity figuring out struggles got tangled up in it, but still I felt the pull forward. I figured a publisher wouldn't want more than one gay couple so that was disheartening, because I was reading yuri with tons and tons of sapphic couples. When Rising Shards started to become a web novel, I decided to just go for it and write as many sapphic couples as I wanted. And as of right now I don't think anything else that I've written has had more readers.

As I've said before, I often feel a drive to write something 'publishable' and usually that means suppressing lots of stuff I want to write about. Which makes it more rewarding when I go back to a passion project and write it my way. Or in one I still haven't fully comprehended yet, writing something that's entirely me, a WLW romance between a stuck up but heavily anxious transbian and her cocky but angsty rival, the two isekai'd into a dragon shifter wrestling game, and having THAT be the first piece of fiction ever in my life that got any kind of publishing backing.

So much of my writing is just tied up in me. Even if I don't have me figured out yet, following what I want to write about pushes me to better places, and in the long term helps me understand myself better. Apparently yuri is a lot of myself, and I like that quite a bit.

nobody could’ve played amagai kohei and suzaki ryo like miyama ryoki and nakamoto yuta… the way the writers literally built their characters with them in mind even before they accepted the roles, the way they improvised their scenes (most notably “don’t cry idiot” during suzaki’s mental breakdown), their natural chemistry with each other, their lasting friendship with each other even almost 2 years later, yuta’s cute crying face… i’m so glad they accepted the roles omg i wanna see more of them. i wish yuta could’ve attended more of the promotions i feel like we lost so much time with suzaki’s character in particular and a whole chunk of amagai’s character with it because they're so intertwined with each other. when i catch yuta’s agency it’s gonna be real ugly for them i promise you that
