5 Steps of Writing a Business Article Like a Pro
Does the prospect of writing a service article make you worried? Company writing can feel daunting, but if you damage down the process right into actions, you will certainly recognize that writing a business article is like writing for any kind of another style.
What is Business Article?
A business article writing is any content you create to directly or indirectly share details regarding a service. The different kinds of organization writing consist of blogs, news releases, newsletters, brochures, flyers, emailers, and also presentations.
Business writing entails a range of writing designs.
The content writing design will certainly vary with the sort of company content you have actually been asked to write. For example, compared to a blog, an emailer should have a much more concise pitch. Likewise, a flyer will certainly have to offer a concept really quickly, while in a company sales brochure, you have the deluxe of being extra descriptive.
I have been writing for medium-sized and also tiny companies for practically seven years currently. In that time structure, I have created business articles on myriad markets, such as modern company technology, software advancement, sustainable energy, educational working as a consultant, childcare service, online assistant solution, as well as clinical invoicing.
Over the thousands of short articles composed, I have developed a company article writing approach that I'd such as to show you today. My method of writing a company and looking into the article may not function for you, but it is one you might definitely use as a start point to create your own variation of a writing system.
For this post, I will adhere to the prep work, looking into, structuring, writing, and editing stages of writing a service article.
Here goes.
5 Steps to Writing a Business Article
Let's repaint a lovely picture ... but with words.
STEP 1: PREPARE - Understand what is expected of you.
Allow's think that you are working for a customer for the very first time, and also, you have actually been given a topic 'X Reasons to Have a Blog.' As soon as you tackle this job, you need to get answers to the complying with inquiries:
1. Who is the target audience of your customer?
Understand that you are writing for and also what the customer desires
Is your customer targetting companies or people? The target audience will influence the means you create. A company targetting individual customers will certainly prefer a writing style that is much more conversational, individual, as well as perhaps also tied with wit. On the other hand, a B2B customer might desire an article that is interesting and also highlights the business's expertise.
When we say business article, of training course, do not assume that you require to create content that appears like a monitoring publication remove. Today, every web content you compose needs to be simple to review and have to communicate the benefit the viewers will originate from the 10 mins they invest in reviewing what you have actually written.
2. Does the customer have key phrases in mind for the article?
In my experience, most clients will certainly enjoy letting you organize this and choosing the most effective keywords phrases for an article. Once you have picked the search phrases, make certain that you include them in the article heading, subheadings (where feasible), as well as at a regularity of 3 to 4 times every 500 words of the article.
3. Anticipated format and also the design of the article.
A lot of clients will certainly share an example of the sort of article they wish to create. Look at previous messages on their web site and clarify if the client wants you to maintain a comparable writing design if they do not.
Also, settle on the format of the entry. For example, a customer that I have been writing for a long time is a digital solution supplier called Virtasktik. All blogs submitted to the customer has to contain a meta summary, along with material for social media blog posts on the article for Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, Instagram, as well as Google+.
ACTION 2: RESEARCH-- Evaluate the Available Information as well as Extract the Pertinent Bits
You need to be a master at both trying to find details online as well as selecting the most pertinent bits.
As you start researching the subject, think regarding the 2 to three key factors your article needs to consist of. After that, these concepts end up being the beginning point for research on the online search engine.
Alternatively, various kind expressions associated with the blog site subject you have been provided. For instance, for the topic 'X reasons to blog site,' your keywords can be--.
- Benefits of organization blog site.
- X Reasons why every business needs to have a blog.
- Statistics / Data on the benefits of having a service blog.
As you can via the appropriate posts, Google (or other search engines) will certainly toss-up tips on various other similar search expressions; appearance at those.
While looking into the details readily available online, I suggest doing the following:
1. Stay existing: Reference articles published no later on than 3 years earlier. Because understanding and technology are evolving quickly, you have to publish material that is relevant and progressive.
2. Usage reliable sources: Extract your content from reputed internet sites or blogs of well-known firms in the sector.
3. Provide credit rating: It's important to give credit report where debt is due, so include a minimum of 1 or 2 web links to reputed internet sites within the article.
4. Include information: Where feasible, try to find recent advancements, market stats, or infographics pertinent to your topic.
5. Essence, as you read: Highlight or draw out one of the most pertinent portions of web content as you check out the short articles. Some writers use devices like Evernote to do this, yet I like to do it the old-fashioned way and also paste all the appropriate material right into a solitary word document. Let's call this the 'base file.'.
6. Review several articles: As a thumb policy research study, at the very least 5 to 6 trustworthy sources of info for every single web page of 500 words that you need to write.
7. Include a quote: Depending on who you are writing for, including a genuine quote for your article is a terrific suggestion.
For an article on blog writing, you can approach prominent blog writers for their guidance or reach out to internet marketing experts to contribute to your article. You can contact them with their website, via e-mail, or perhaps their Facebook service page.
Tell them who you are, the customer you are writing for, the subject, searching for a 2 or 3 line quote, and when you require the return. I often use this technique and have a 25 to 30 percent success rate, which means I come close to, at the very least 4 potential contributors to get a solitary quote. The study stage will take you anywhere between one to one hr thirty mins.
ACTION 3: STRUCTURE - The Information as well as Your Thoughts.
Identify essential points and also determine which item of info goes where.
If you are writing a 1000 word article, you should contend the very least a base record of 2500 to 3000 words by the time you have researched the information. As soon as convinced that you have actually collected all the appropriate information, begin reading your base file.
Having actually experienced the paper, open one more word data and begin writing the crucial points, or have to have information for your article. I such as to reorganize as well as highlight the content in the base record, making use of different shades. The material that I want to consist of in the opening para is highlighted in yellow, the primary body in pink, as well as article referrals in environment-friendly. What you are doing at this step, is structuring the details as well as your thoughts prior to you start writing.
By the time you are done, you will certainly have your article skeleton-- opening, subheadings, bullet points under each, and also takeaways from your article (or the ending paragraph), in addition to the information that needs to come under each area.
If you are dealing with a word limit of say 1000 words, you can choose to create 150 words for the article opening, 800 words on the text, and an additional 100 for writing the conclusion. Naturally, it's a good idea to write the initial draft of about 1200 to 1300 words. As you boost the web content throughout the editing and enhancing stage, word count will immediately be minimized.
Structuring the article prior to you begin writing will certainly take you 25 to 30 minutes.
You have, by this time, already invested 2 hours in your article.
Currently, allow's start writing.
ACTION 4: WRITING - Write, Don't Edit
It's time to just compose. Create as you believe as well as talk.
The number one tip at this stage is to create as you assume. Compose as fast as you can type but keep referencing the base record to see the sub-points as well as the details you want under each point. Be careful as to not 'copy-paste' web content from your base documents.
As you write the initial article draft, I highly suggest that you use a distraction-free full-screen editor such as Write Box to aid you to compose without diversions.
Right here some extra tips on writing a business article:
1. Share the article objective in the opening para: Write an appealing opening paragraph that shows the main concern the article is going to answer. To put it simply, why should someone review your blog site? As an example, here's an opening I wrote for an article on task delegation:
" Are you a star at entrusting things to do in your business? Or are you one of the numerous local business owners that shy's far from job delegation due to the fact that you are the afraid job will not occur as expected, or that you will not' understand exactly how points are advancing when you have handed off the job?"
2. Consist of key phrases: As you write, attempt to consist of the essential expression(s) where feasible, however specifically in the article opening paragraph, subheadings of the article, and also within the web content with a frequency of concerning 3 to 4 reps for each 400 to 500 words.
3. Consist of interior and also external links: Add 2 to 3 hyperlinks to posts published on various other reputed web sites, along with links to related content within your customer's internet site. When you include weblinks, use appropriate 'anchor expressions' to explain them. Rather than stating 'visit this site for additional information,' include the links within your text.
4. Encourage readers to do something about it: Close with a takeaway paragraph of what the viewers ought to learn or the final thought you intend to entrust the viewers. For instance, you might invite visitors to sign up for a monthly company newsletter, leave a discuss their very own experiences/ expertise of the subject, or load the sales call type.
5. U.S vs. U.K English: Write in the U.S or U.K English depending upon which country your client is based.
6. Compose in energetic voice: Minimize the usage of passive sentences, write in 'active voice' to the extent feasible.
Writing a 1000 word article can take around 2 hrs. At this stage, depending on your research study and writing performance, you have actually already invested in between 3 to 4 hours in your article.
ACTION 5: EDITING - The Most Important Part of the Writing Process.
Modifying is important to producing a top-quality article, just like polishing a diamond to bring the sparkle.
Consider your article (written thus far) as a harsh ruby that requires sprucing up. Spending significant effort in editing an item is vital to producing quality work that will certainly make your customers coming back for even more.
Paste the content from the message file to an MSWord data. Review the article you have actually created until now. I find that checking out the web content aloud on your own or utilizing the 'Read Aloud Speech' function under the Review tab in Microsoft Word is valuable in recognizing sentences that must be re-written or re-arranged to improve the article flow.
Examine your material on web content editing and enhancing tools such as Grammarly or Hemingway App to boost readability once you are completely satisfied that the article circulation is good. These apps can aid in identifying easy sentences (which you may desire to reword in an energetic voice), recognize expressions with a much more simple expression, or rectify the inaccurate use of spelling. You can reduce wordiness-- as an example,' you have to choose' can be created a lot more concisely as' you need to make a decision.'
Cross-check the performance of the article header using devices such as Coschedule's Headline Analyzer when you find yourself stuck for concepts on writing an engaging headline, attempt the blog site title generator by SEOPressor.
Focusing on the tiniest details at the editing stage will certainly make it a lengthy process. However the end, the outcome will be worth it. For a 1000 word article, I can conveniently invest an hour attempting to modify as well as improve it. On the other hand, there is no end to the quantity of modifying you can do in an article. Past a factor, you should decide if the existing variation of the article is excellent to go. Prior to you release your organization article or send it to the customer, guarantee that you do a plagiarism check. I like to utilize Copyscape.
So there you have it, my tell-all article on writing organization write-ups. As well as would you know it, it also occurs to be the lengthiest blog post ever published on my blog site.

TØP Weekly Update SPECIAL TRENCH EDITION (10/6/18)
Ya’ll have had time to listen to the album. Some of you have it memorized already. So let’s pick apart Twenty One Pilots’ latest project track-by-track, explore the new themes and sounds that the band is exploring in this era, and also catch up on all of the latest news to come out in just the last two days.
This Weeks TØPics:
A Complete Look at Trench
My Blood Music Video
Twenty One Pilots to Return to the American Music Awards
New Interviews About the Album
Picking Fights with Gaga? (Not Really, No)
And MORE!
Track Analysis:
Before we get started, we should acknowledge Trench’s wonderful liner notes, which besides boasting some stellar artistic design reveal a great deal of important information about this album. First, the overall cohesion of the album, like with all of the band’s albums save for Blurryface, can be attributed to the shared vision of the same production team on every track. The impact of Paul Meany on this entire album should not be understated: Paul co-produced every track save for “Levitate”, which he is instead given main credit for with Tyler listed as co-producer. He is also given writing credit on half of the album for his arrangements, again including “Levitate”. We musn’t forget the other heroes: the album was mixed by Adam Hawkins and mastered by Chris Gehringer. Also, the “thank you”s are both touching and occasionally very funny (“And to our haters, we know you liked stressed out.”)
I’ve already expressed my thoughts and reactions to the four previous singles in prior updates, so feel free to look back at them to fill in the gaps.
“Morph” starts us off real strong with an absolutely stellar groove (thanks, Paul). Lyrically, the track features Tyler ruminating on death, considering its inevitability, worrying over its proximity, and questioning what comes after. It’s the most he discusses faith on Trench; Tyler considers looking “above” for answers a “blind belief”, but he still chooses it anyway, with some reservations. Ultimately, Tyler resolves to “morph to someone” else, to stay on the defensive against the insecurities leveled at him by Nico and keep moving forward. The song also features a “Judge”-esque shout-out to our boy Josh Dun within the stellar ending run- fitting, considering just how good his drums sound on this track in particular.
“Chlorine” is a definite highlight off the album, as it constantly mixes up flow and structure while never losing it’s laid-back psychedelic groove and its consistently excellent metaphorical examination of Tyler’s strained relationship with fame. I’ll be singing that hook forever. And the bridge. And that ending break-down that definitely sounds like a No Phun Intended sample. This thing’s a bop, potentially the best track on the whole project- and that’s really saying something.
“Smithereens” is an odd duck that feels like it doesn’t quite fit in on Trench but is nonetheless a very sweet and enjoyable tune. I mean, it’s love song that snuck onto this album that’s literally about writing a love song and sneaking it onto an album; I have to commend Tyler for being ballsy, clever, and artistic with his grand romantic gesture. I also have to commend Mr. Meany for sneaking that beautiful woodwind section in.
Before I even heard the album, I knew “Neon Gravestones” was going to be the stand-out track for a lot of folks. Rock Sound had promised that this would be the song that saves people’s lives, and hopefully it will. Tyler’s spoken word musings regarding celebrity suicide were always going to be controversial, and publications like The Atlantic and Alt Press have already questioned exactly what he means to say with the song. As someone who just recently lost a loved one to suicide, even I’ve struggled with this song’s message somewhat. Does Tyler disrespect the memory of those that have passed by telling us not to glorify them in death? It skirts close to the line a bit, and he certainly could have gotten a bit more specific in how he suggests we should react. But he reigns it back from the edge, as Tyler so often does when discussing mental illness, by placing the focus on his own lived experience. “If I lose to myself” is the most gut-wrenching lyric Tyler’s written in ages, and it really sells that this idea is something that Tyler truly wrestles with in dark moments. We really do have to de-romanticize suicide if we want to have a chance against it, and I’m proud of Tyler for taking those steps in a public way that can also help others. And the production? Simply bone-chilling.
“The Hype”, aka “Wonderwall” meets “Bittersweet Symphony”, is another highlight. Simple lyrics, sure, but comforting ones. Particular praise goes to the ending, when the echo effects layer onto the vocals and the ukulele comes into mix. One of many great “night-time driving down the highway” songs on this half of the album.
“Cut My Lip” is pretty easily my least favorite song on the album, which is not meant a harsh criticism at all. The overall vibe is very enjoyable, and I especially love how Tyler says “contusions”, but the song is just twice as long as the lyrical content actually warrants. It really is largely saved by Josh’s intricate drumming and Paul’s intervention with the reverbing psychedelic synths: it sounds just as sick as the rest of the album in those respects.
The last two minutes of “Bandito” may just be the best part of the entire album; Paul (I assume it’s Paul) really outdid himself with that composition. The rest of the song is great, too, with “I’m still not sure if fear’s a rival or close relative to truth” in particular standing out as an all-time Tyler Joseph lyric. I can’t wait to hear this live... God, I hope this is played live...
“Pet Cheetah” is... weird. But with a name like that, we expected as much, and it only makes all the more sense when considering the subject matter: writer’s block. Tackling that subject head on really seems to have given an extra boost to Tyler’s creative energies: his rap verse is straight-up fire in terms of both wordplay and passion. All in all, a fun curiosity to come back to when we want to remember that time Tyler wrapped about naming a cheetah after acclaimed British action star Jason Statham.
“Legend” is one of those songs that really is beyond criticism by virtue of its subject matter: Tyler mourning the loss of his grandfather. I do wish the song was given a bit more polish around the edges, but it still boasts a gorgeous horn section, and the rough sound helps demonstrate that this was a deeply personal project that we’re privileged to be able to hear at all.
“Leave the City” is the perfect ending note for this project. As Zane Lowe said, it never fully reaches the crescendo it seems to be building to, and all the better for it. The inclusion of a call to “stay alive”, now directed inward toward Tyler himself, remains a powerful rallying cry of hope, even while it expresses a sense of resignation to knowing our personal battles may never end. There’s no clear answer, only the promise that we are not left alone to face what the future holds. And that’s enough.
Taken all together, Trench was not the album I was expecting, and not at all in a bad way. There was relatively little in the way of “Jumpsuit”’s harder edge, nor was it as obtuse and concept-dedicated as the initial marketing had indicated. But it was still incredibly daring and ambitious, tackling song-structures and concepts that few pop artists (if we can still call them that) would dare approach. While I would have loved an album much more strictly dedicated to telling the story of Dema, I don’t know if most people would have, and that kind of railroading would have prevented Tyler from getting as personal and deep as he does here. There are ideas and individual lyrics on this project that have left their mark on me like few pieces of music have since... well, Vessel. It might not match that album in my own heart, but it might also objectively be the best thing they’ve ever done.
Major News, Releases, and Announcements:
Shockingly, we’re not even close to done. As reported in the last update, the album’s release was accompanied by the release of an all new music video for “My Blood”. Unlike the prior three videos, this narrative takes place completely outside the world of Dema and Trench, featuring two rebel brothers dealing with all that suburban teen white boy angst (been there) and attending a real funky Halloween party in skeleton onesies, all leading up to a satisfying Fight Club revelation.
The video is also the first one since “Tear In My Heart” to not be directed by Mark Eshleman or Andrew Donoho. The Clique’s new friend Tim Mattia has been directing some major music videos since 2012, including Troye Sivan’s Blue Neighborhood project, Fetty Wap’s “Trap Queen”, and major singles from The 1975, Zedd, Chris Stapleton, and many more. You can definitely tell the difference from the aesthetic (particularly Tyler and Josh being relegated to a glorified cameo). Still, it was a refreshing change of pace, and I look forward to seeing if it helps the song pick up any momentum at radio.
Upcoming Performances:
American Music Awards, Microsoft Theater, Los Angeles, CA
Capacity: 7,100
On Thursday, we reported that Tyler and Josh would be signing copies of Trench in Hollywood this coming Monday. Turns out they weren’t just looking for some California sunshine- they’ll be performing at the American Music Awards. This marks their first professionally filmed performance this era and their first award show performance since... well, the last AMAs, where they put on a stellar show. Current reports state that the band will be playing “Jumpsuit”, but I would not be at all surprised if they mashed it up or tried to do something clever and attention-grabbing. Whatever they play, seeing the boys back playing live will certainly do wonders for promoting Trench- and it will definitely make me happy.
Other Shenanigans:
Oh, we’re still not done. Irish radio station Today FM aired an interview they held with Tyler back on the Complete Diversion media day. The interviewer is brilliant and asked a bunch of thoughtful questions that show that he’s done his homework and cares for the band and its fans. Highlights include:
Tyler says that he doesn’t want to talk too much about the “easter eggs” of the marketing campaign (probably referring to dmaorg.info) because he feels it might take away some of the punch.
Tyler shares some very wise words about being aware of the cyclical nature of mental health and self-improvement. He didn’t end the album with a definitive answer because he has recognized that, in our individual journeys, we regularly get sent back to Square 1 and then are left all the more discouraged because we feel the effort is futile. Tyler suggests that awareness that will happen in advance- and that we are all doing it together- will help us to get back to the place we fell from more quickly each time.
Tyler says that it’s incredibly “heavy” to hear fans say they saved their lives, and that he’s tempted to brush it off rather than deal with that weight. However, they recognize that their platform has given them a responsibility to serve their audience.
When confronted by the possibility that folks wouldn’t like the new imagery, the band had to fall back and just do what they thought was cool. They were so relieved by how well the Complete Diversion show went and how receptive everyone was to them.
The band will absolutely be moving forward with this Trench story- it’s not done yet, not by a long shot.
Australian music site Music Feeds also published a text interview with the band that’s another must-read:
Tyler discusses how Trench is largely meant to represent the “space between spaces”. He was particularly feeling strange about leaving Blurryface to approach this new album, so he channeled that struggle with finding yourself in a liminal space into the music.
He’s hinted at it in the past, but I believe this is the first time Tyler bluntly says that Blurryface is Nicolas Bourbaki.
Tyler jokes that they filmed in Ukraine because the workers don’t take lunch breaks and it saved them money.
Tyler says that all of the songs on the album “completely destroyed him”, but says that “Legend” was the hardest of all because of the subject matter and how he was still developing it as his grandfather passed.
Josh is looking forward to playing “Morph” live because of how different the drum pattern is from their previous work.
Tyler’s still listening to a lot of Death Cab for Cutie, while Josh is mostly just listening to podcasts like Lore.
“You can’t touch a hole.”
Also, in case you missed the title image, the band made a cute joke about A Star Is Born, whose soundtrack is increasingly looking like it will knock Trench away from a #1 debut. Some Lady Gaga stans are mad about it, I guess, but come on, that picture is hilarious.
-
Listen. We’ve been here for a long time. You’ve done a lot of reading of my inane ramblings. I was going to sum up some of the early reviews for the album, but I think I’m going to save that for the next time. Hopefully I’ll be able to include the opinions of a certain Melon... Catch you Friday.
Power to the local dreamer.

7 Ways to Use Data Analytics to Improve Your SEO Ranking
We’ve all heard the phrase big data analytics being thrown around. Technology has made it possible to get clear on how our campaigns and content is doing – giving us valuable information about our audience, even down to the exact search terms they’re using on Google and other search engines.
Are you already using data analytics on your business? If you are, are you leveraging it so that you can improve your SEO strategies to get better rankings?
Whether or not you’ve already jumped on the big data train, read on below to see why you should be using big data analytics, as well as the exact ways you can use them to help boost your site’s SEO.
The value of using big data analytics
Ever since we entered the current era of SEO – where quality of content counts much more than questionable SEO techniques in the past – it’s critical to really understand how your audiences think and even interact with search engines.
This is where big data analytics comes in. The data you get from analytics tools can tell you exactly who your audience is and what they’re searching for. You can see how they found your business or website or if they’re staying on your site long enough to get what they need.
There are a number of different web analytics tools you can use. What’s more important than the right tool, however, is how you use that data. Whether it’s to create better products or services or even improving your overall marketing strategy, analyzing and creating next steps with said data becomes key.
Below we'll tackle 7 different ways you can use your data to improve your SEO rankings.
1. Spruce up your website’s navigation structure
How you structure your website’s navigation can play a big role in improving your SEO ranking – the longer people stay on your website, visiting different pages and posts, the more search engines learn that your site is full of valuable resources for viewers.
Having an effective, easy-to-use navigation structure can help direct visitors through a customer journey, helping you reach different goals such as getting them to sign up for an email list or to make a purchase on your site.
If you want to see how well your different pages are doing in getting audiences to stay on your site longer, you can find this under the Behavior tab on your Google Analytics reports.
Simply navigate to Behavior > Behavior Flow to find out what visitors do when they land on a page.
Source: Single Grain
You can track how many visitors drop-off (or bounce) after landing on a particular page, as well as seeing which pages others might immediately check out.
So your start page might be your homepage. The links that appear under the 1st Interaction column signify the most-visited pages immediately after the start page, so you can keep tracing the path your visitors took.
Knowing where people drop off your site or which pages they frequent most afterward can help you improve your pages. Add more CTAs or internal links wherever necessary. Sprinkle in lead generation forms for most-visited pages if possible.
2. Build content around organic search queries
Does your website have a search bar? If so, you’re in a perfect position to find out what visitors are looking for on your site, giving you a tremendous opportunity to create content to answer their queries.
Data analytics can tell you what exactly people are searching for on your website. Sometimes their queries can tell you if you should be featuring a particular product or page more; other times, the data can give you hints about what kind of content to create.
Take a look at what people are searching on your site with the Site Search tab on Google Analytics.
Alternatively, you can also use data analytics to see just exactly what your audience is searching for even before they land on your website.
On Google Analytics, look for the search terms your visitors used by navigating to Acquisition > Search Console > Queries.
Look for queries most relevant to your company and create content – be it pillar blog posts or a funnel – around these.

The federal government’s dietary rules are the road map to how the governing administration administers school lunches as perfectly as foods aid packages. And numerous manufacturers formulate their solutions centered on these rules so they can participate in these packages, which obtain $one hundred billion of foods a year. (Calla Kessler/The Washington Post)
The Trump administration is restricting scientific input to the 2020 dietary rules, boosting considerations between diet advocates and impartial experts about industry influence more than healthy having recommendations for all People.
For the initially time, the Section of Well being and Human Solutions and the Section of Agriculture, which oversee the committee supplying recommendations for the rules, have predetermined the matters that will be tackled. They have narrowed the exploration that can be utilised only to experiments vetted by company officials, potentially leaving vital experiments out of the blend.
[Latin America’s war on weight problems could be a model for the U.S.]
The 80 questions the committee has been questioned to solution do not protect several urgent issues the panel explored five years back. This includes the consumption of purple and processed meat, as perfectly as the extraordinary proliferation of ultraprocessed foodstuff, which account for a escalating proportion of energy consumed by People. Nor will the committee investigate suitable sodium ranges for distinctive populations.
A vast range of experts say these are between the most critical questions as the country faces an epidemic of way of life conditions this kind of as atherosclerosis, coronary heart sickness, stroke, weight problems and Sort two diabetic issues. They also symbolize the issues that massive foods companies locate most objectionable for the reason that they would in all probability cast significant-sodium, significant-sugar, significant-saturated excess fat and really processed foodstuff in a bad light.
Considering the fact that 1980, the federal governing administration has revised dietary rules every five years, and the recommendations have a vast affect on American well being and commerce. The rules, their CliffsNotes edition when known as the foods pyramid, are the road map to how the governing administration administers school lunches as perfectly as foods aid packages. And numerous manufacturers formulate their solutions centered on these rules so they can participate in these packages, which obtain $one hundred billion of foods a year.
50 % of American grown ups already live with one particular or far more diet program-related persistent health problems, and bad diet program is the No. 1 bring about of ill well being in the state, foremost to 700,000 deaths every year, according to the Middle for Science in the Public Interest, a buyer advocacy team that pushes for safer and much healthier foodstuff.
Even if the debate all around issues this kind of as purple meat and salt stays unresolved, foremost nutritionists say it is challenging to fathom why the federal panel would not try to assess the evidence and craft recommendations.
“The slicing-edge issues in dietary guidance in 2019 are about having much less meat, avoidance of ultra-processed foodstuff, and sustainable generation and consumption,” suggests Marion Nestle, a diet scholar at New York College. “Guidelines that stay away from these issues will be years behind the moments.”
In a statement, the USDA confirmed that matters not stated between its 80 questions will not be tackled.
It mentioned it made a decision on the matters centered on their importance to general public well being, opportunity affect on federal diet packages, and to stay away from duplication of federal attempts. The committee will look atbroad questions exploring the relationship concerning included sugar consumption and the risk of weight problems, as perfectly as far more certain questions, this kind of as the relationship concerning seafood consumption all through pregnancy and lactation and the cognitive growth of infants.
The operate of the 2020 Nutritional Guidelines Advisory Committee has included import this cycle. For the initially time, the committee will difficulty diet rules for expecting women of all ages and young children underneath two years previous. In addition, the Entire world Resources Institute, the Entire world Bank and United Nations issued a report lately that human beings must radically alter foods generation to reduce the most catastrophic consequences of world wide warming, with one particular of its central imperatives to minimize need for beef.
Below a 2015 legislation passed by Congress in reaction to that year’s recommendations, this year’s panel is prohibited from researching the affect of foods generation on the ecosystem.
“The dietary rules are underneath assault from various directions,” David Katz, writer and founding director of Yale University’s Yale-Griffin Avoidance Investigate Middle, mentioned in an e mail. “This time all around, veiled companies symbolizing the interests of beef, dairy and Large Foodstuff are pretending to use science to argue versus the real science and to expunge vital recommendations. Of course sustainability ought to be bundled. Of course we will need to take in much less meat.”
Danielle Beck, senior director of governing administration affairs for the Nationwide Cattlemen’s Beef Association, defended the USDA’s solution, declaring it preserves the scientific integrity of the dietary rules method.
“It’s critical to be aware that the rules were being hardly ever supposed to discuss about sustainability these questions are outside the scope of legislation,” she mentioned. “We’re assured that as extensive as the exploration is crystal clear, and as extensive as the committee sticks to the scope laid out for them, it will acknowledge beef’s function in a coronary heart-healthy, balanced diet program.”
As it conducts its exploration, the dietary rules committee has traditionally cast a broad web to craft its recommendations, consulting with outside experts and drawing on details analysis, the USDA’s personal exploration and outside science from universities and impartial researchers.
Some experts argue the final decision to restrict the operate only to exploration analyzed by the agency’s personal scientists will hobble the committee. On July 22, far more than thirty advocacy teams and companies, such as the American Institute for Most cancers Investigate and the American Academy of Pediatrics, petitioned the advisory committee to open up up the method.
The team suggests that the final decision to exclude outside science will minimize the success of assessment and represents a sharp departure from the method utilised by the 2015 committee, which utilised outside science to solution just about half of its exploration questions.
“Thousands of researchers outside the federal governing administration have devoted their professions to conducting valuable exploration on matters related to diet program and well being, such as some of the certain exploration questions discovered by the [committee],” the group’s letter suggests. “This exploration, which includes systematic reviews and meta-analyses, has been peer-reviewed by the country’s — and the world’s — foremost researchers in the discipline and posted in the top rated scientific journals, at scientific conferences and on the websites of respectable nonprofit companies. ”
[What to feed your little one? New dietary rules weigh in on expecting women of all ages, infants and youthful young children]
Some experts say that for the reason that the USDA has explicitly prohibited exploration executed right before 2000 from becoming regarded, considerably of the strongest science-centered guidance on dietary fats and cardiovascular sickness risk will be excluded. And for setting up guidance for the feeding of babies and toddlers, renowned experts have collaborated on rules — for illustration, on the function of breast-feeding in infant diet — that will be ineligible for consideration for the reason that they aren’t the USDA scientists’ personal systematic reviews.
“Why ignore all this operate already becoming performed?” questioned Bonnie Liebman, director of diet for the Middle for Science in the Public Interest. “My guess is the USDA wishes to management the evidence that can be examined by the new advisory committee. By excluding present reviews, it can basically ignore all of the past reviews that produced meat, dairy and sugary beverages look negative.”
In a statement, the USDA mentioned its personal reviews “will seize all suitable exploration experiments that pertain to the certain scientific dilemma becoming answered.” On its web site, the USDA notes that outside science may not use the exact demanding standards, may be out of date or have distinctive results than governing administration operate. And it cited a recent Nationwide Academies of Sciences, Engineering and Drugs report as its justification for the final decision to not use outside science.
But the report does not counsel the committee prohibit its science in this way.
“With restricted sources, it would be beneficial to leverage present systematic reviews, meta-analyses, and stories to limit avoidable replication of attempts and to share results with other folks,” it reads, concluding with, “the use of present systematic reviews and meta-analyses is encouraged.”
Jerry Mande, a diet science and policy professor at Tufts who was at the USDA all through the Obama administration, mentioned some of the USDA’s steps may make perception — for illustration restricting outside science to make sure exploration is unbiased. But he mentioned it’s challenging to convey to the USDA’s motive presented other anti-science steps taken by the Trump administration.
The USDA has taken other pro-industry moves, for illustration, this kind of as relaxing limitations on processed foodstuff and sodium ranges in the school lunch software.
“The dilemma is, is [USDA] promoting science or limiting science?” Mande mentioned.
Other folks protect the administration’s final decision to count on internal science.
Nina Teicholz, the writer of “The Large Extra fat Shock,” which difficulties irrespective of whether saturated excess fat brings about coronary heart sickness, a make any difference of ongoing dietary debate, argues the dietary rules method has extensive experienced a trouble of relying on outside science that may be motivated by industry.
“There has been an hard work to portray [the 2020] rules as a products of Trump’s anti-science policies,” Teicholz wrote in an e mail. “However, the troubles have been an difficulty for the rules going back to their start in 1980. ”
[Weight loss plans are not one particular-dimension-matches-all. So why do we take care of dietary rules that way?]
Some impartial experts say the USDA’s recent choices reflect industry stress and controversy that surrounded the 2015 dietary rules.
That year’s committee, for the initially time, proposed demanding limits on included sugar (no far more than ten per cent of full energy), discovered a sturdy correlation concerning the consumption of processed and purple meat and specified varieties of cancer, this kind of as colorectal, and advised addressing diet program and sustainability (what is fantastic for human well being as perfectly as planetary well being). The North American Meat Institute, the Nationwide Cattlemen’s Beef Association, the dairy industry and other influential stakeholders pushed back strongly.
“This caused a ruckus in the industry,” suggests Mary Story, director of the Robert Wood Johnson Basis national software business of Healthy Consuming Investigate and a member of the 2015 dietary rules committee. In the long run, the last recommendations from the USDA excluded vital ideas on the consumption of purple and processed meats as perfectly as sustainability issues.
Critics are also worried about the make-up of the committee itself.
The 2020 committee is composed of eminent physicians, registered dietitians and teachers with levels in general public well being, but numerous were being put forward by and have labored closely with the foods industry, according to a Flexibility of Information Act doc obtained by the Middle for Science in the Public Interest that stated which companies nominated committee users.
13 of the twenty have ties to industry. Numerous committee users were being nominated by four or far more foods industry teams, such as the Nationwide Potato Council to Nationwide Cattlemen’s Beef Association and the trade affiliation of the snack foods industry. The vast majority were being nominated by institutes backed by foods industry lobby teams, and nine were being put forward by the Academy of Nutrition and Dietitians, which has acquired funding from McDonald’s, Coca-Cola and Mars.
In accordance to several experts in the diet discipline, the prevalence of industry ties is considerably higher than in past committees. Conflict of desire statements from the 2015 Nutritional Guidelines Advisory Committee suggests that only two of 12 users experienced connections to industry companies. (No precise comparative doc on conflicts of interests is readily available for the latest committee.)
[Here’s what the government’s dietary rules ought to genuinely say]
The Foodstuff, Nutrition, and Customer Solutions personnel, which administers the nation’s domestic diet aid packages, is also led in this administration by previous foods industry executives. Chief of personnel Maggie Lyons was a previous lobbyist for the Nationwide Grocers Association and policy adviser Kailee Tkacz was a previous lobbyist for the corn syrup and snack foods industries. The latter’s appointment expected an moral waiver from previous White Dwelling counsel Donald McGahn, a waiver granting her permission “to participate personally and substantially in matters regarding the Nutritional Guidelines for People method. ”
Existing users of the panel are not permitted to discuss to the media about the rules method.
When questioned about the make-up of the committee, a USDA spokesman mentioned, “The scientists selected to serve on the committee are national leaders in the regions of diet and well being. . . . Their substantial scientific skills in their respective fields provides valuable know-how that will specifically reward the shoppers who depend on America’s risk-free, inexpensive, and wholesome foods source.”

How to Make Your Organization More Accountable With Task Management?
Accountability in the workplace is integral to the success of modern business organizations.
Alas, many people misunderstand what this term even means. We argue it’s inseparable from good management and governance. Namely, accountability is no longer synonymous with the scourge of punishment and iron-fist-style rule.
The concept has evolved into a proven mechanism for setting organizations up for market triumph. At its core is the willingness to accept responsibility and obligations. So, it’s more of a carrot than a stick.
Alas, wielding it is always easier said than done. People exhibit varying degrees of discipline, responsibility, and communication skills. In addition, business projects tend to be composed of many moving parts.
It’s up to business leaders to figure out how to make all the different pieces of the puzzle fall together. If they can’t pull it off, nobody can.
Task management is the proper response to most of these dilemmas and challenges. It’s a practice with an impressive track record across industry sectors. Here is how to harness its full power and gain an edge over your competition.
Accountability Has to Mean Something
Accountability is a key measure of performance, a pathway to taking ownership of work.
The first thing to realize is that you cannot measure what you don’t track and observe. In other words, accountability doesn’t exist in a vacuum, as some ever-elusive ideal. It must be rooted in business practices, leadership style, company culture, and organizational structure.
Moreover, it’s necessary to embrace the modern concept of accountability, as a top-down positive reinforcement and encouragement. On the employee’s end, the situation seems clear. When a task is accepted or delegated to a team member, that person becomes accountable for it.
The truth is it’s a bit more complicated than that. Nobody can be held accountable unless it was obvious from the get-go what they needed to be accountable for. Promoting accountability comes through established and pre-negotiated set of rules, standards, and practices.
What is more, accountably can’t rest on wishful thinking. It’s in our nature to (occasionally) shirk from responsibility. That is when we need a bit of chase and push to stop the corner-cutting.
Every bit of individual accountability adds up and sets the stage for the organization as a whole to become accountable. If you simply declare everyone is accountable, it can turn out that nobody is accountable.
We want to steer clear of this disastrous scenario at all costs.
Like a Well-Oiled Machine
Moving on, we need to examine how task management fits the accountability picture.
Well, this management staple refers to various activities that break down projects into smaller, more manageable bits— tasks. These tasks are overseen across their entire lifecycle and hold both management and employees to high scrutiny.
As such, task management can involve planning, testing, tracking, and reporting. Furthermore, it aims to define the priority status of tasks, as well as the time, effort, and financial resources required to see them through.
Tasks are building blocks that make or break projects. Knowing how to manage them across shifts holds the key to completing them on time and with flying colors. Not only that but you can refine the workflow and ensure maximum productivity.
The next benefit is that you are able to maintain a balanced workload and smartly delegate tasks. This kind of sound management is incredibly valuable because it empowers teams to cope with mounting pressure, fatigue, and burnout.
You unlock the full potential of the workforce, hitting tight deadlines and smashing your business goals.
The beauty of it is that instead of working harder, you’re working smarter. In addition, but you make decisions based on relevant facts and figures, not some gut instinct.
These are all ways in which task management benefits all stakeholders and reinforce accountability.
Accountability and Task Management Go Hand-in-Hand
To accommodate accountability and task management, you have to structure your whole organization around them.
Both of them have to be permanent arrangements, not one-time deals. Thus, it’s best to formalize them with performance plans, job descriptions, onboarding guides, strategies, and other documents.
When it comes to task management, the process revolves around identifying, tracking, and carrying out various tasks in short time frames (on a daily basis), mid-term (weekly or monthly), and longer horizons (annually).
Simple to-do lists no longer cut it. For instance, you want to be able to alter the order of tasks, as well as to group them together, especially when you have tasks with similar requirements.
As you can imagine, these goals are tricky to accomplish with paper-based tools. Things easily get messy and spiral out of control, especially when managing multiple or large projects. Accountability inevitably suffers.
What you want is immediate, complete, and real-time view of all the priorities and delivery dates.
Tech Tools of the Trade
Hence, more sophisticated tools are called for tracking tasks from beginning to end.
The good news is they come in various shapes and forms. Online task lists and calendars are an obvious choice and a real step up from conventional to-do lists.
Their main advantage is the ability of employees to access information and resources from virtually anywhere. What is more, they are able to provide input, make edits, and monitor progress in real-time.
As for team leaders and management, they outline tasks and distribute the workload. They also strive to spot bottlenecks, overdue obligations, and other hurdles before they can derail the project.
Apart from rudimentary tools, we also have project management platforms that take things further.
They include a multitude of handy features that automate task management. These are due dates, priority levels, tags, commenting, etc.
Slack, one of the most popular collaboration tools has individual and group messages as well. They can serve as a means of generating feedback and concordance. The platform also features a load of settings and options that make business life easier.
You can see what others are up to at all times while keeping other communication channels unclogged. Hence, nobody can get away slacking or not knowing the requirements. It’s all out there, perfectly transparent.

Rounding up the Arsenal
Furthermore, task management software is another tech avenue to consider.
It gives you everything you need in one toolbox. You can easily add tasks to multiple projects and keep everyone working toward shared goals. On top of that, you may rely on robust reporting and tracking tools.
It takes only a few clicks to perform most of these tasks.
This unified system light years ahead of outdated task management, which employs a bunch of scattered tools, unproductive meetings, and other time-wasters.
We should also mention tools such as Kanban boards, which are used for visualizing tasks and workflows. The management here revolves around placing cards in different columns.
They correspond to tasks that are in progress, completed, and yet to be tackled (to do, doing, done).
Boards hold the answers to all the important questions team members may have. In case they do not satisfy your needs, make use of customization options to tailor the dashboard.
The list of possibilities doesn’t end here, so shop around for the best tools. Weigh the pros and cons of various tools in the market. We would advise you to stick to those with a minimum learning curve and intuitive interfaces.
Playing it Smart
No amount of workspace technology makes up for the lack of proper human involvement.
It’s absolutely crucial to get everything right from the get-go. The consequences and rewards must be clear and related to completion or failure to complete certain tasks.
You can set S.M.A.R.T goals to storm through this early stage. In case you are not familiar, the acronym stands for Specific, Measurable, Attainable, Relevant, and Timely. You can put it all in black and white to boost accountability further.
Secondly, define the main roles and associated responsibilities. Provide personalized instructions and directions where needed. Utilize reporting features to establish a system of who responds to whom.
Designate people in charge of authorizing, assigning, delegating, and approving tasks. You probably need several layers of permission in place.
Along similar lines, start managing tasks in boundless and groups. Bear in mind the order of priority can shift from one day to another. Urgent priorities always arise and they must not throw you off balance.
While going about these priorities, foster the utmost level of task visibility. Have a repository of all negotiations and every shared file.
And whatever you do, commit to one management method, which is to say one platform or app. It provides a shared pool of knowledge and resources, taking collaboration and accountability to the next level.
Nuts and Bolts of the System
The ultimate goal of task management is to spend the right amount of time on priority work and assign the right people to handle it too. There should be enough incentives to ensure these outcomes.
Yes, it is wise to reward top performers and let them serve as an example to their colleagues. At the same time, avoid alienating slackers— give them a chance to make amends and grasp the “why” behind their lousy performance.
Speaking of which, you should remember poor accountability isn’t always the culprit behind all your problems. It might be employees simply lack effective training or skills (soft or technical) to nail the tasks. At other times, lackluster leadership is to blame.
After all, it’s business leaders that determine who has too much work and who can take on more. With just a few clicks, it can reassign the tasks to achieve a more balanced distribution.
Beyond that, be careful about assigning open-ended tasks. More often than not, they muddy the accountability situation and do more harm than good. You are better off setting specific deadlines, provided you set them right.
Another risk you could run into is the lack of any paper trail. This happens due to overreliance on digital tools. Mitigate it by initiating documentation processes and policies.
With that in mind, use digital solutions to open the channels of communication and facilitate knowledge sharing, as well as peer learning. Build a vibrant company culture around collaboration, togetherness, and transparency.
Stay in tune with feedback from people closest to the work process. They usually have invaluable insights you can use to fine-tune the system and program tools such as alerts and reminders.
Offer your own feedback and coach staff whenever possible. To cover even more ground, integrate learning and development objectives into periodic performance reviews.
Full Steam Ahead
This kind of task management infused with accountability is a tall order.
Yet, it brings many benefits you cannot afford to forgo.
Task management has a positive impact on workforce morale, motivation, and engagement. Employees are in-the-know and enticed to work at their best. On the level of a business organization, this rising tide yields better employee retention rates.
We have also shown you how done right, task management works wonders in terms of improving accountability. People have complete information and all the tools in front of them. We’re talking about alerts, triggers, notifications, and other hallmarks of modern task management.
They help everyone notice looping deadlines and finish everything on time. In the process, you can save a tremendous amount of time and minimize wasted effort.
So, if you ask us, it’s time to take decisive action. Do away with errors in communication and project management faults. Maintain the focus on performance, not people as individuals. No need to get personal or let personal issues seep into the workflow.
You will get more things done every day and destroy all the obstacles on the road to business greatness.
Accountable Management at its Finest
Accountability comes to life somewhere on the convergence point between processes, communication, and productivity.
Ensuring it is a daunting task, which you want to approach with a sense of clarity, management prowess, and strategic planning. The first thing to do is draw lines in the sand to set expectations.
Be specific about what you want people to do. Deploy clear business processes to shed light on the path ahead. Document and then assume control over the entire workflow.
Once that is done, you can equip yourself with essential digital tools to streamline task management. Ideally, you’re able to see and manage all work in progress in one place.
This is how you look over people’s shoulders without them even noticing. But, the trick is not to keep them in the dark! You have to promote accountability, visibility, and transparency across the board.
So, communicate all the moving parts of the accountability framework, including roles and what they entail. Encourage teams to really own and take responsibility for this framework. See to it nobody is overwhelmed or underutilized, but pulling the right amount of weight.
These are surefire techniques to make sure everyone is on the same page. Following these should be able to optimally allocate your human resources and operate at peak efficiency.

No, there will be no new tax cut before the midterms
NO, THERE WILL NOT BE A PRE-MIDTERM TAX CUT — President Trump on Saturday in Nevada said the GOP plans to enact “a major tax cut for middle-income people” before the November 6 midterm elections. There are multiple problems with this idea. The first is that Congress is not in session until after the midterms. The second is that the recent reports of a ballooning deficit make slashing taxes again a huge political problem for Republicans.
But the third and biggest problem is that it’s not clear at all what Trump is talking about. A senior administration official tells our Nancy Cook that the middle class tax cut Trump was referring to in his Nevada speech on Saturday was NOT the Tax Reform 2.0 bill recently passed by the House. This is an entirely separate middle class tax cut that he’d like to see.
Story Continued Below
The official said that while the White House is supportive of the House’s tax bill, the White House itself is not pushing it seriously behind-closed-doors. Trump has said before that voters don’t really know what permanence means anyway, so there is no reason to remind them that the individual tax cuts are not permanent. (As a little sidebar, MM thinks most people know what is “permanent” and what is going to “go away.”)
SAY WHAT? — This lede from Bloomberg’s Joshua Gallu, Justin Sink, and Sahil Kapur pretty much captures the reaction MM also got when emailing and texting around this weekend about the tax cut comments: “Trump has promised a new middle-income tax cut plan to land days before the midterm election, a move aimed at boosting his party’s chances of holding its Congressional majorities — yet Republican tax policy-makers know nothing about it. …
“A Republican tax lobbyist with ties to GOP leadership said he’s unaware of any effort in Congress to address tax policy before the midterm elections. The lobbyist, who asked not to be identified to discuss internal matters, said he met with White House officials recently, and came away believing that no additional effort at tax legislation was imminent.” Read more.
There are people inside the administration at senior levels who have no idea what Trump was talking about, FYI.
SO WHAT NEXT? — Republicans could hope Trump’s comment just fades away in all the noise. But that would look very strange. So perhaps the White House will come out with some kind of outline of a middle class tax cut plan paid for with unlikely-to-ever-happen spending cuts as a campaign season document to tout in the final days. That would allow Trump to do rallies and promises to cut everyone’s taxes if the GOP holds onto Congress.
MIDTERM BLAST— There are now just 15 days until Election Day. Some good news for Democrats in Florida, where the latest CNN poll finds incumbent Bill Nelson with a five point lead over GOP nominee Rick Scott, 50%-45%, and Democrat Andrew Gillum up 12 points, 54%-42%, in the governor’s race to replace Scott.
Good news for Republicans, Trump’s approval rating jumped to 47% in the WSJ poll while Democrats hold a nine-point edge on he generic ballot question for Congress.
HIGH INTEREST — WSJ’S Janet Hook: “Nearly two thirds of registered voters showed a high level of interest in the election—the highest ever recorded in a midterm election since the Journal/NBC poll began asking the question in 2006.” Read more.
MORE ON NELLIE LIANG — MM has reported that the White House remains confident they can turn around Senate GOP opposition to Fed nominee Nellie Liang, a long-time Fed staffer who was critical during the financial crisis response. Liang is viewed as too pro-regulation by some banking groups, which are making their displeasure known to GOP staffers and lawmakers.
The White House thinks once Republicans get to know Liang, who is widely respected in the bank regulatory world, the opposition will soften. But Axios’ Jonathan Swan on Sunday quoted “a source close to Republican leadership” saying that Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell “is not going to call a vote on somebody who has no support among Republicans. That’s not how Mitch works.” Liang is no Elizabeth Warren. She’s a moderate on bank regs. But the knives are obviously out for her.
Nothing has changed in the way the White House views the nomination. A Senate Banking Committee hearing and vote would likely not happen until some time next year. And if Liang gets out of committee, McConnell can’t very well deny her a floor vote.

MNUCHIN TO SAUDI — Via WSJ’s Ian Talley: “U.S. Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin said he would travel to Saudi Arabia Monday to solidify a pressure campaign against Iran, but noted it was too early to discuss potential sanctions against the Saudi kingdom for its alleged role in the death of government critic Jamal Khashoggi.
“The trip shows the fine line the U.S. treasury secretary is trying to tread as the Trump administration cultivates a strategic relationship with Saudi Arabia to support its objectives in the Middle East, even as many of the world’s top finance leaders and government officials shun the kingdom and its crown prince, Mohammed bin Salman, over Mr. Khashoggi’s death.” Read more.
THE BIG IDEA: OPIODS AND THE LABOR MARKET — Pantheon’s Ian Shepherdson: “The failure of labor market participation to increase as the economy has gathered pace … is one of the biggest macro mysteries in recent years. … Part of the story might be the opioid drug crisis, which has now reached breathtaking proportions. Almost 71K people died from all drug overdoses last year, three times the 2002 level and double the prerecession level.
“Overdoses now kill as many Americans every 10 months as in the 15 years of the Vietnam War, and outnumber gun and auto accidents combined. … Apart from the hideous human cost to addicts, their families and communities, the surge in drug deaths tells us that the number of people who are outside the labor force as a result of their opioid use probably has risen sharply. The biggest rise in deaths is among primeage people, from 25-to-54.”

GOLDMAN’S VIEW ON THE ELECTION – Via the Weekly Kickstart email: “Most clients, prediction markets, and our political economists believe Democrats will gain control of the House and Republicans will retain a slim Senate majority. Our economists believe that two likely consequences of a divided Congress would be an increase in investigations and uncertainty surrounding fiscal deadlines, which could raise equity volatility.
“The recent rally in pharmaceutical stocks suggests investors believe a divided Congress would reduce the likelihood of new drug price regulations. Investors express optimism regarding the potential for new infrastructure spending and reduced trade conflict post-election, but our economists and markets are skeptical on both accounts.”
SIDEBAR — MM is with the Goldman economists and markets on the skepticism front. Anything can happen but Democrats joining hands with Trump on an infrastructure bill in 2019 while nearly every member of the party eyes a presidential run? Hard to see it. Not to mention Republicans won’t be terribly excited for even more spending. TRUMP’S MYSTERIOUS TAX CUT FLOAT — NYT’s Alan Rappeport and Jim Tankersley: “The 2017 Republican tax cuts have been a dud on the campaign trail ahead of the November midterm elections, so … Trump has come up with a new plan: more tax cuts. … There is no chance of such a plan passing even the House before the midterms, let alone the Senate, because Congress is in recess through the election. So the move appears to be an effort to give Republican voters a jolt of enthusiasm as the polls are opening — and perhaps an acknowledgment of how small a boost Mr. Trump’s signature tax bill seems to be giving Republicans in the battle to control Congress.
“Mnuchin … said in an interview on Sunday that he had been working diligently with Representative Kevin Brady of Texas, the Republican chairman of the House Ways and Means Committee, to develop another tax plan that would be released ‘shortly.’ ‘This is specifically focused on the middle class and not beyond that,’ Mr. Mnuchin said in Jerusalem on the first stop of his six-country Middle East trip.” Read more.

One other question: Do Senate Republicans want to shoot down a nominee who would be the first Asian American and only the tenth woman on the Fed board? Get some popcorn popped for this one.

Mnuchin still in question for Saudi event
NELLIE LIANG UPDATE — Despite some grumbling from Senate Republicans and financial industry groups, there are no signs whatsoever that the White House will back off from its’ nomination of Nellie Liang, a former long-time Fed staffer currently at Brookings, for a seat of the central bank’s board of governors. MM is told the White House remains confident that Senate Banking and the full Senate will approve of the nomination.
The knock on Liang in some circles is that she’s not strongly enough in favor of deregulatory efforts. But she’s widely respected for her work at the Fed during the financial crisis and supporters argue that once Senate Republicans get to know her they will become much more comfortable.
Story Continued Below
MNUCHIN STILL IN QUESTION FOR SAUDI EVENT — As the Saudi government reportedly weighed whether to say that “rogue operatives” murdered journalist Jamal Khashoggi in a “interrogation gone wrong,” President Trump continues to consider whether or not to send Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin to attend the “Davos in the Dessert” event later this month. In remarks to the pool in Georgia, Trump said the White House was still making a decision on whether to send Mnuchin as Secretary of State Mike Pompeo headed to Riyadh to meet with Saudi King Salman. A decision is expected by Friday.
As of Monday night, at least some people inside Treasury were very much hoping that Trump would decide to pull Mnuchin out of the conference.
The “rogue killers” line, as unbelievable as it sounds, is one that Trump himself also used on Monday after talked to King Salman and received the king’s “flat denial.” It sounds as though both Saudi Arabia and the White House are looking for ways to distance the Saudis from Khashoggi’s alleged murder and ease tensions with the kingdom.
There are serious economic reasons beyond defense contracts that the U.S. wants to turn the heat down with Saudi Arabia over Khashoggi. The Saudis on Monday threatened to retaliate against any sanctions, something that could conceivably include an oil embargo that could drive up U.S. consumer prices. Oil prices retreated after Trump’s statements on Monday but remain on edge.
Via CNBC on the importance of Saudi production: “Saudi Arabia produces about 10.5 million barrels of oil per day, equal to more than 10 percent of global crude demand. It exports about 7 million barrels a day of oil … Given those figures, the kingdom is a central pillar of the global oil market at any time. But its influence is especially pronounced right now.
“That’s because the Trump administration is aiming to wipe out oil exports from Iran, OPEC’s third-biggest partner and a longtime enemy of both Saudi Arabia and the United States. Trump restored sanctions on Iran in May and gave oil buyers until Nov. 4 to stop importing Iranian crude.
“Saudi Arabia is one of the few OPEC nations with enough spare capacity to offset the loss of Iranian barrels. The Trump administration is relying on the kingdom to increase output and blunt the upward pressure on oil prices caused by its Iran policy.”
DEFICIT EXPLODES — POLITICO’s Sarah Ferris: “Trump’s first full fiscal year in office has produced the nation’s largest budget shortfall in six years, according to Treasury Department data … The U.S. deficit widened in fiscal 2018 to $779 billion, which is $113 billion more than the previous year … That figure is in line with the CBO’s estimated shortfall of $793 billion. …
“The $779 billion figure is the largest deficit since the height of the Great Recession in 2012, when the budget shortfall amounted to $1.089 trillion. … Mnuchin attributed part of the spending increase to a short-term boost for the military.” Read more.
THE FIGURE IS EXTRAORDINARY when you think about the fact that the economy is as strong as it is and unemployment is at just 3.7 percent. Typically, governments run up these kind of deficits in times of recession. But it’s totally out of fashion to care about debt and deficits any more. Progressives may hate the Trump tax cuts but they balk at any notion that the government should worry about red ink and would fight hard against any non-military spending cuts.
Republicans used to pretend they cared about deficits (and in fact forced shutdowns and a debt limit crisis under President Obama) but in the age of Trump they don’t really care anymore. And the Trump White House can call for big non-military spending cuts in its annual budget submissions but those document are purely political exercises and don’t actual reflect Trump’s policy, something that will be especially true headed into a re-election campaign.
HOW TIMES CHANGE— Via WSJ’s Kate Davidson: “Higher government spending and near-flat revenue combined to drive the fiscal 2018 deficit to 3.9% of gross domestic product, up from 3.5% of GDP the year before.
“By comparison, the last time the jobless rate was below 4%, in 2000, the U.S. ran a budget surplus of 2.3% of GDP. Revenue that year rose 11% from a year earlier. And in 1969, when the jobless rate last touched 3.7%, the U.S. ran a budget surplus equal to 0.3% of GDP. Revenue was up 22% that year.”
PRU PREPS FOR DE-DESIGNATION — POLITICO’s Victoria Guida for Pros: “Federal regulators are set to agree as soon as Tuesday to relax oversight of insurance giant Prudential Financial, marking an end to a decade-long effort to police nonbank institutions whose failure could once again threaten the nation’s financial system.
“The Financial Stability Oversight Council … is expected to vote to remove Prudential’s label as ;systemically important,’ which places it under the scrutiny of the Federal Reserve. Four nonbanks — including AIG, a central player in the financial crisis, which received a massive government bailout — were also given that tag under the Obama administration, but Prudential is the only one left.” Read more.

Allen died Monday afternoon, according to his multi-faceted holding company Vulcan Inc., just two weeks after announcing he had restarted treatment for non-Hodgkin lymphoma.
“Allen co-founded Redmond tech giant Microsoft with childhood friend Bill Gates. After leaving the company, he turned his focus to a wide range of other business and scientific pursuits, which including founding the Allen Institute for Brain Science, and the real estate arm of Vulcan, which went on to build much of Amazon’s campus. OOPS — Bloomberg’s Alex Wayne and Saleha Mohsin: “Trump said that Sears Holdings Corp. had been mismanaged for years before it declared bankruptcy. Among those responsible for its management: his Treasury secretary.
“Steven Mnuchin was a member of Sears’s board from 2005 until December 2016, and before that was a director for K-Mart Corp., which was acquired by Sears in 2005. ‘Sears has been dying for many years,’ Trump told reporters as he departed the White House on Monday to inspect hurricane damage in Florida. ‘It’s been obviously improperly run for many years and it’s a shame.’” Read more.
BIG COAL PLAN DIES AT THE WHITE HOUSE — POLITICO’s Eric Wolff and Darius Dixon: “One of the Trump administration’s major efforts to prop up ailing coal companies has run aground in the White House, a setback to an industry that had hoped for a major resurgence after Donald Trump won the presidency.
“Energy Secretary Rick Perry has spent more than a year pushing various plans that would invoke national security to force power companies to keep their economically struggling coal plants running — a goal in line with Trump’s frequent pledges to revive what he calls ‘beautiful, clean coal.’ But the White House has shelved the plan amid opposition from the president’s own advisers on the National Security Council and National Economic Council” Read more.
FORMER CFPB STUDENT LOAN CHIEF MAKES HIS CASE IN STATES – Via POLITICO’s Michael Stratford: Seth Frotman, who earlier this year resigned as the top student loan official at the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau in protest of Trump administration policies, is making the case that states need to step up their oversight of the student loan industry.
— Frotman will appear today at a consumer advocacy conference in New Jersey to urge state lawmakers to more tightly regulate student loan companies. He’ll blast the Trump administration as captive to industry interests at the expense of student loan borrowers, according to prepared remarks shared with Morning Education.
ELIZABETH WARREN IS RUNNING FOR PRESIDENT — POLITICO’s Natasha Korecki and Alex Thompson: “At a town hall meeting last month, Sen. Elizabeth Warren finally revealed she was taking ‘a hard look’ at running for president. Now it’s clear just how hard she’s looking Monday’s grandiose, made-for-media detailing of her Native American ancestry — complete with DNA documentation — erased any questions about the Massachusetts senator’s intent.
“Something approaching a 2020 campaign slogan is beginning to take shape: ‘Persist.’ … The breadth of her national political operation was made clear in an exhaustive account on Sunday. In recent months Warren has released 10 years of tax returns, introduced a major anti-corruption legislative package, published policy papers and even shifted from her studied avoidance of the press to stopping in the Senate hallway to take questions and taking private, off-the-record meetings with national reporters in New York and D.C.”
NOT ALL DEMS THRILLED WITH WARREN — Jim Messina, @messina2012, on Twitter: “Argue the substance all you want, but why 22 days before a crucial election where we MUST win house and senate to save America, why did @SenWarren have to do her announcement now? Why can’t Dems ever stay focused???”
STOCKS FADE, FINISH LOWER — AP’s Marley Jay: “After a wobbly day of trading, U.S. stocks fell for the seventh time in eight days Monday as technology companies continued to slide. Industrial and high-dividend companies rose, and the market’s losses were limited relative to the steep losses it suffered last week.
“Stocks opened lower and repeatedly switched between small gains and losses before falling in the last hour of trading. Along with technology companies, health care and energy stocks and retailers also fell as the companies that have led the U.S. market higher this year continued to struggle.” Read more.
And Asian stocks rise — Bloomberg’s Andreea Papuc: “Asian stocks chalked modest gains at the open Tuesday as U.S. equity index futures advanced, with investors balancing the outlook for global growth and earnings against geopolitical flareups and technical weakness. Read more.
YELLEN CALLS TRUMP’S ATTACK ON FED COUNTERPRODUCTIVE — WSJ’s Nick Timiraos: “Former Federal Reserve Chairwoman Janet Yellen said … Trump’s attacks on the central bank could be counterproductive if they cause investors to doubt the Fed’s commitment to keeping inflation in check.
“Ms. Yellen said Monday at the annual convention of the Mortgage Bankers Association that she didn’t think the central bank or her successor as Fed chairman, Jerome Powell, would be influenced by Mr. Trump’s criticism last week, in which he said the Fed had ‘gone crazy’ in its campaign to slowly raise short-term borrowing costs. That comment came amid the biggest selloff in stock prices in more than seven months.” Read more.
BLACKSTONE/BLACKSTONE CHIEFS OUT FOR SAUDI EVENT— NYT’s Michael J. de la Merced and Andrew Ross Sorkin: “The chief executives of the Blackstone Group and BlackRock have canceled plans to attend an investment conference in Saudi Arabia next week … joining Jamie Dimon of JPMorgan Chase as the latest Wall Street titans to pull back in the wake of the disappearance, and potential murder of a prominent Saudi journalist.
“The decisions by Stephen A. Schwarzman of Blackstone and Laurence D. Fink of BlackRock add to a string of ruptures between the business community and Saudi Arabia as questions continue to swirl over the fate of Jamal Khashoggi, who has not been seen since he entered the Saudi Consulate in Istanbul on Oct. 2.” Read more.
And so has Google — Reuters’ Arjun Panchadar: “Alphabet Inc’s Google on Monday became the latest company to drop out of a business conference in Saudi Arabia. … Google said in a statement that Google Cloud Chief Executive Diane Greene would not attend the Future Investment Initiative Summit scheduled to be held in Riyadh starting Oct. 23. Google’s Greene did not offer a reason for her action, and a spokesman declined to elaborate.” Read more.

“Most large financial-services firms have resisted the idea of trading digital currencies because of concerns about risk, regulations and stability. The price of bitcoin has plunged roughly 67% since its peak last December, partially reflecting doubts about the practical use of a currency that isn’t sponsored by any government.” Read more.

The No. 2 U.S. bank’s profit rose 35 percent, helped by cost controls, but investors focused on the underlying businesses. …

The role of a social networking supervisor has appealed to the mass generation of socially-active internet users. It's hard not to. Especially when some may feel you could make big bucks from submitting Facebook upgrades. Hardly. Being a social media manager is kind of like being a stand-up comic book. You need to quickly understand your audience as well as your engagement with them is essential. If you can do this, then you've already won the crowd. So, how do you turn into a social manager? More importantly, how can you become a fantastic social boss? Firstly, you need to want it. Second, you have to enjoy it. And even in the event that you tick all of these boxes, then you should ask yourself: "Can I be a social man? " If the answer is no, subsequently becoming a social media manager is probably not for you... So let's take a look at the stats. LinkedIn reveals 57,910 results for "social media manager" Social networking has now overtaken porn as the number 1 action on the Internet 97 percent of all customers search for local companies online 71% of customers receiving a quick brand response on social media say that they would likely recommend that new to other people 93% of entrepreneurs use social media for business In terms of difficulty of execution, almost half (49%) of B2B marketers place social media marketing at the top, followed closely by content advertising (39 percent), SEO (26%) and mobile (25 percent) 77% of B2B marketers use a blog as part of the articles marketing mix On average, 25% of marketing budgets are now spent on content creation, delivery and advertising 78% of small businesses bring new customers through social sites When asked to rank their own company's social business maturity on a scale of 1 to 10, more than half of international company executives gave their company a rating of 3 or under But the statistic That's most relevant to this article is: Just 12 percent of these with social marketing feel they actually use it effectively. Being a social networking manager brings with it some important benefits within a freelance setting. The most recognisable being the fact that you're your own boss. You make the decisions and answer to no one. You send the invoices and you set the policies. Heck, you could sit on your own underpants daily on the computer in the event you wished to. Another is money. It's an in-demand role, but one that companies are still struggling to come to terms with. Some companies realise and understand the worthiness social websites could bring to their own enterprise and are willing to invest greatly in strong social networking campaigns. Another attractive rationale is that the low barriers for entry. With low start-up costs and a great deal of online resources (like this one!) To rapidly decrease the learning cure, everyone can start a freelancer social management firm in a brief space of time. I will tell you my story shortly but first, let's explore the essential skills you will need to be a terrific social networking supervisor. . Fundamental Skills: Marketing Knowledge You ought to have a good grasp of the basic marketing principles. Some schooling in marketing would be valuable, but otherwise you can find many quality tools online. Expertise Your experience does not necessarily need to be limited to life experiences. Perhaps you have managed your own social networking profiles for some time? Do you know how to effectively maintain your own social accounts and understand what clients expect? Sociable I touched on this at the beginning of the article. If you are not a social person - somebody who doesn't enjoy communicating much and isn't very outgoing, afterward becoming a social media manager just is not for you. It's true that you can hide behind a keyword and track for a while, but clients will usually wish to meet, speak on the phone, or have Skype sessions at some point. Project Management You do not have to have a Prince2 certification, however you do need to have the ability to manage projects and your time well. It's typical for social networking manager's to operate with numerous clients at any one time. Keeping tabs on what's important so that it doesn't get overwhelming. Technological Social networking exists online. Therefore, you need to have a certain degree of computer literacy. Having good knowledge of social technologies will boost your services and ensure you're keeping current with the most recent social trends and advancements. Interpersonal Skills: Communication Personality Companies usually do not want to hire individuals without a personality to act on behalf of their own brand. It doesn't resonate well with them, or their own audiences. Responsiveness I've touched on this a couple times - social media is very fast-paced. Imagine if one of your societal missions was largely focused on customer service and you didn't respond to customer complaints or queries for months. People online need rapid responses. Being able to fulfil these demands can stand your customer (and you!)) Entrepreneurial To turn into a social networking supervisor in a freelance capacity, you've got to be a self-starter. You ought to be inclined to go the extra mile and then take some financial risks on the way. If you do not land a job which pays enough in 1 month, how can this impact you? Multitasking A great social media supervisor has to be able to effectively conduct a vast range of tasks. Organisation You need to always be very well organised when providing social media management solutions. I use all kinds of traditional tools such as calendars, white boards and job lists to keep myself organized. I also use many online management tools, like: Thunderbird for accessing all my email accounts in 1 place, Dropbox to easily share documents with clients and bookmarks to keep track of all the sites I regularly visit. Strategic Thinking Having the ability to think campaigns through until they happen and occasionally thinking beyond the box when necessary, are great advantage to have as a social networking manager. Clients have a tendency to want to know how you will do something before permitting you to do that, so having the ability to present a clear and concise approach is essential. Flexible (with travel) In contrast to popular belief, a freelancer social media manager has to leave his office sometimes! If this is problematic for you, then you need to think about starting another profession. Nearly every sizeable job I tackle involves multiple meetings with the client. You ought to have reasonable pitching skills, because you might be required to market your providers face to face too, prior to being hired. You may even choose to take on in-house function. Wider Skills: Copywriting Each great social networking supervisor is a great author. Writing forms the bases of many facets of internet marketing, be it generating advertisements, writing blogs, engaging with customers, scripting sales copy or writing media releases. Graphic Design Pretty much all societal media platforms provide the functionality to customise the interface and integrate your personal branding. If you are eloquent using Photoshop (or comparable layout applications), then you're in a good position to offer these services as part of your social networking bundle. Similarly, creating content such as infographics, banner ads or images is standard practise to get a social networking manager. Advertising Every social media manager should have sound knowledge of advertisements. Can it be Pay-Per-Click (PPC) advertising or banner ads, you need to be aware of the ins and outs of every discipline and know how to optimise each format. PR You may start out not having to have a deep understanding of PR, since it is typically managed by bigger brands who have an interest in persuading stakeholders, investors or the public to maintain a certain point of view. Statistical Everything in marketing ought to be quantified. You should periodically measure and analyse your own social marketing performance and produce reports for your customers to demonstrate your value. SEO Understanding how societal networking affects search engine optimisation will finally improve campaign performance. If you believe SEO doesn't matter to your social actions, consider again. Traditional Marketing Although you generally won't be involved in traditional marketing practises while undertaking a social media management function, you should understand how both forms of promotion influence each other and how each may be best leveraged to complement another. Video Editing This will probably be the least used of your broader skills, but nevertheless it can help you in your interpersonal advertising positions. I have had a few clients that required presentations or presentation videos to be edited prior to being used within their social networking campaigns. I'm for sure no expert, but using a reasonable degree of understanding in using Windows Movie Maker (or similar video editing software) can turn that movie file straight from the camera into a beautiful, YouTube-ready video. Even if you possess all the necessary skills to develop into a social networking supervisor, there's still scope to improve your services by using different social programs and applications. Hootsuite: I composed an in-depth overview of Hootsuite on my blog which also contains a video tutorial which should provide all the information you will need to know about Hootsuite. BuzzBundle: This is my favorite and most appreciated piece of software I have ever used. I use it mostly to find keywords around my articles subject from across a huge range of websites, forums and societal websites and flow all this info back to me in one interface. I can then see who is discussing my topic and jump straight into the discussions to add my two cents. So, what does a social networking manager really do? As you can probably tell by now, the role of a social media manager is diverse. " Listed below are a Couple of general actions that social media managers will be expected to do: Strategy You will be required to invent campaign and platform particular strategies that meet the company objectives. You will create tasks programs, articles calendars, set metrics and KPIs, tackle various research activities and perform various types of analysis. Content Production Content generates the foundations of any marketing campaign. How you choose to fulfill your campaigns will depend on the different kinds of content you create. Believe them. Community Management You ought to be the go-to individual if representing brands in social domains and always reach out and participate with your viewers. You will have to continuously strengthen social relationships in order to develop long-lasting followers. Audience Building Marketing to the very same people over and above will not widen your range and social reach. You ought to be raising readership and your degree of influence in your intended audiences. Customer Service Many companies use social media within an instant channel for customer services. You will have to be responsive and useful in your social activities, regularly function as first point of contact. You will be representing the brand and managing their client perceptions. Measurement Every effort that consumes investment will have to be measured and analysed. I'vve previously written tutorials which demonstrate ways to set up your Google Analytics account on my website. Reporting At the time that your efforts have been measured and assessed, your clients might want to understand the way their investment has done. This can take the kind of visual aids for meetings or digital reports. Reporting is a key ingredient of any societal networking manager in order to prove your value and demonstrate the value you've added to the small business. How I Became A Social Media Manager I have been busy in social media since July 2007. This was before the timing of all of the latest societal marketing tools and software that today are ingrained into all social marketers everyday life. Resources or tutorials weren't as widely available that may help accelerate the learning curve. I'd find an internet course that looked pretty good in teaching me the way to turn my social abilities that I had been practising on my own accounts into a fully fledged business. I spent #600 on this online course to learn the fundamentals and now that some years have passed, I could look back and state the value wasn't all that good, but the thoughts were there. It pushed me to think beyond the box and motivated me to begin my trajectory towards becoming a social media supervisor. It was at this time once I jumped on board with the poker boom and began playing online cash tournaments and games. Poker helped helped me to create my own time management, cash management and evaluation skills. I always knew I wanted to begin my own business so this was a good platform to receive my toes wet. During my time playing poker, I was constantly engaged in online social discussions and even wrote a few guest posts for poker websites. Before I knew it, I had been a fully-fledged freelancer social networking supervisor... So to kick-start my freelance social websites work, I combined a lot of freelance websites like Elance, oDesk and Freelancer. I still use a number of these today. After a couple of years of advertising on little one-off jobs and creating my own social marketing acumen, I was hired by an online business services firm to run their social media campaigns, as well as handle all their own customers societal marketing campaigns. I still work with them today, which only shows the power of forging good working relationships. I was able to attract clients in many months for the upcoming few years and each job was fairly diverse from the next. This allowed me to develop broader abilities that I have since discovered nearly a requirement in order to provide a well-rounded social networking marketing service. I mentioned some of these wider skills required to be a great social networking manager towards the middle of the article. I also kept maintaining and constructing my own social networking profiles. My societal profiles have regularly attracted clients, which retains function coming in and builds up my networking possible. I have been writing on my blog for a couple of decades attracting local seo hollywood, but only recently upgraded my website. My very own social activities also serve to build traffic to my websites, where I create passive income. I like to "listen" to the societal environment and engage with individuals who are already looking for my content. This functions well in strengthening and building connections, in addition to attracting targeted visitors. Los Angeles SEO Expert

Bleacher File daily daily the MTV for sports
Bleacher Report CEO Dave Finocchio day-to-day build the following MTV — just without the entire Tv element.
It’s been simply over 12 months since Turner, which bought Bleacher Document for a said $a hundred seventy-five million again in 2012, laid out a plan day-to-day inject $one hundred million in day-to-day turning the sports property into a video juggernaut.
In that point, Finocchio has launched some of the authentic online collection and a feature duration documentary and is publishing every day on Snapchat as one of the company’s one of a kind Discover partners.
“Digital is a day-to-day playground everyday day-to-day broaden series,” Finocchio, who co-founded Bleacher Report in 2007, stated in an interview with Recode. “We’re able to discern out what’s running and what’s now not with out making a bet the farm.”
While Turner obtained Bleacher Document, it did so as it needed a sports vacation spot everyday accompany its live sports insurance and compete with the likes of ESPN. With 60 million precise every daytraffic a month, the web site has every day be one of the most popular sports activities locations on the net.
Now Finocchio desires day everyday step returned from the stats and recreation day-to-day that make up lots of traditional sports coverage, and instead dig in on video collection and documentaries that assist join the arena’s maximum famous athletes day-to-day the tradition they’re helping day-to-day shape. It’s the sort of cultural awareness that human beings cherished approximately MTV, Finocchio stated.
As part of the frenzy, Bleacher Report released an marketing campaign this week, which featured a Television business with NBA legend Allen Iverson. We spoke with Finocchio about how his video push is going and why Bleacher Report is converting its focus. What follows is an edited transcript of our interview.
Dave Finocchio: We need human beings contemplating Bleacher Record as being the heart of sports tradition. sports activities are such a terrific lens in everyday tradition, I assume for guys in particular in the United states. There’s no well-known language culturally that’s larger than sports activities. It’s in the center of ways men communicate every day each different greater so than some other challenges be counted.
The sports activities way of life tie-up sounds very ESPN-mosque daily me. Are you looking to emulate them here?
We absolutely don’t communicate about them lots internally. We probably speak about MTV the maximum. now not within the feel that we’re trying to emulate what MTV did in any particular manner, however the quantity every day which MTV mattered daily young humans on a 66b34c3da3a0593bd135e66036f9aef3 foundation on this united states of America — the rise of MTV in the ’80s and day-to-day the ’90s became truly remarkable.
Do you need everyday get away from commodity news, like sports activities ratings or highlights?
Field ratings, video games recaps, pick out your sort of cliché sports content material — that’s a part of a classic sports fan’s experience. That’s part of what we offer. However, those aren’t the components of the sports revel in which are [getting] a 12-12 months-antique youngster or a 17-yr-antique child … every day emotionally [get] off the equal of his or her chair and notice something that reasons them day-to-day percentage it with their buddies.
Will the content we see on Bleacher File alternate in any respect?
We will possibly do less conventional insurance of the Xs and Os on a recreation-via-game foundation. We’re now not as targeted on in-studio talking head content. You’ll certainly see us tackle increasingly more tasks along the strains of a [Bleacher Report original series] “sport of Zones,” or things that fall more ineveryday an episodic enjoyment sort of motif.
WWE’s Rated PG Stars daily – Roddy Piper Vs Drew McIntyre Taking a cue from a sequence of articles I noticed over on the Bleacher Document, a website that re-posts my very own blog entries, I decided everyday do my very own version of something they call creature vs creature. What they appear everyday be doing, is having special members do a weblog as everyday why they sense that the tag group they have got selected is the every day of all time. That got me inspired. So for the following week, I am going everyday do a sequence of posts comparing a number of the daily stars of the then, WWF, back inside the PG generation of the 80s, everyday their cutting-edge counterparts. For my first fit, we’ve got Roddy Piper vs Drew McIntyre.
Rowdy Roddy Piper.
at the time changed into one in every of the largest names in all the WWF. 2d only every day Hulk Hogan himself. maximum probably every day his feud with Hogan, and for being within the predominant occasion in opposition to The Hulkster at the first Wrestlemania. Well, I am positive Piper might had been well-known regardless, as he become one of the fine human beings at the mic that You will ever listen, and had a knack for getting the gang everyday hate him. Piper turned into no longer a good deal of a technical wrestler, in truth he become pretty much a brawler who’s major weapon turned into a sleeper maintain. And despite being as large as he became, he by no means did win the sector Championship. However on the other hand, this changed into the Hogan technology, so no one But him wore that belt for quite a while.
Drew McIntyre.
right here we have the new “Scot” on the block. It’s far way day-to-dayo early in McIntyre’s profession everyday know just how a long way this guy will pass, so we are able to only base this on what we’ve visible daily. And day-to-day, in spite of being billed as “The selected One” and being groomed as a destiny World Champion, he is no suit for Mr Piper. His matches have been stupid, and his interviews inspire one to grab the far flung as fast as possible everyday change the channel. Now, of direction Drew may additionally at some point win that World Championship, and feature one up on Piper, However from what I will see, he will in no way fill his boots. McIntrye has the looks, or even a better finisher along with his “future Surprise” DDT, But this every day is a no contest.

CEO Interview: How American Express GBT Tackles Innovation
Doug Anderson was named CEO of American Express Global Business Travel in August. John O'Boyle / American Express Global Business Travel
Skift Take: American Express Global Business Travel is investing in technology to give travelers better digital tools and a more streamlined booking experience.
— Hannah Sampson
Editor’s Note: A year ago, Skift expanded its coverage of corporate travel with more frequent stories and a dedicated newsletter. The Corporate Travel Innovation Report focuses on the future of corporate travel by examining the big fault lines of disruption for travel managers and buyers, the innovations emerging from the sector, and the changing business traveler habits that are upending how corporate travel is packaged, bought, and sold.
In this series of stories and one-on-one interviews, we explore some of the latest trends, technology, and external forces causing corporate travel to evolve. You can read the rest of the articles in this series here.
As longtime CEO of travel management megacompany Carlson Wagonlit Travel, Doug Anderson always kept an eye on rival American Express Global Business Travel.
These days, Anderson is keeping an even closer watch. After about 10 years at CWT, he was named CEO of American Express GBT in August as the firm continued to move forward with growth plans following its 2014 spinoff from American Express in a joint venture between the credit card company and a group led by Certares. That deal came with $900 million in new funding.
Just about a week after he was named to the position, the company announced it was acquiring corporate travel technology firm KDS in a move to boost its online booking capabilities.
The ability to make such investments at GBT is key, Anderson said.
“This industry is moving so rapidly in the direction of technology as the solution to just about everything that we do that the ability to invest in that technology, develop it and lead the market is what makes my job fun,” he said in an interview in late March. “I think it was very good for me to be able to come into an environment where we have the flexibility to either decide to buy, build, or partner for technology solutions that are fundamentally important in our industry while at the same time knowing a little bit about it, which enables me to help our team think through what are the most relevant opportunities that we have and then how do we bring those most relevant opportunities to market.”
Anderson spoke to Skift about the company’s technology plans, disruption in corporate travel, and his priorities moving forward. This conversation has been edited for clarity and length.
Skift: What’s surprised you about the role or about the company since you’ve started?
Anderson: I was somewhat surprised at the strength of our technology plans at GBT. I had, as a competitor, been a keen observer of what Amex GBT had been doing — at least, the part that was visible to the public over the last two and a half years since the joint venture. When I joined the company and got a firsthand view at our technology roadmap, I was very…surprised may be a strong word, but I was energized and was, and continue to be, very enthusiastic about our technology and innovation plan. It’s second to none in this industry.
Skift: That’s an interesting insight because it’s not that often that you get to see on the other side of that curtain. Has it been a real cultural shift to go from being a competitor to an insider, or do you feel like you come in with really good, fresh eyes?
Anderson: The culture of every organization is different. The culture here is one that I would assess at being extremely service focused. I was very impressed from, literally, from day one with the service ethos across Amex GBT. You might expect me to say that, because we’re in the service sector, but the enthusiasm and the commitment, the dedication to providing service to our clients is absolutely superb….
I knew the industry fairly well. But I didn’t know, other than what we see in the competitive field, much about the organization and the way the organization thinks and operates here at GBT. I did understand the joint venture setup and the capitalization of the company and what was in the public domain, but what I think is really unique about this opportunity for me personally is coming in with a fairly good understanding of the industry, a pretty good understanding of the largest competitor that GBT has in the [travel management company] space and then being able to think about the opportunities we have at GBT through the commitment of our shareholders, the investment capital that we have to really build out our innovation pipeline and our product roadmap that I referred to earlier and really invest in growing this business as this digital revolution happens around everything that is travel in both in the consumer and in the corporate space. When you bring those together, and when I think about the service ethos that I referred to, and then the capital available to really invest in separating ourself from the industry, I get really excited about the opportunity we have here and what we’re delivering.
Skift: You’ve been making a bunch of moves in technology, both by acquiring other tech companies and developing your own tools. What’s really the driving force of that tech roadmap? The second part of that question would be how difficult is real innovation when it comes to corporate travel specifically? Just because it’s not just a pure leisure experience. There’s so many other things you have to keep in mind.
Anderson: The goal of our technology roadmap and of our investment in technology is really twofold. One is to enable travelers, the digital traveler — that’s a term I’ll use — to have access to anything and everything the traveler needs while they’re on the road to make them more efficient in their journey. Today’s traveler is at the point of having everything that he or she needs in their hand on a smartphone or a tablet that’s relevant to their trip. Not just the static information about flying and hotel reservation and confirmation, but the information around the dynamic events that are occurring around them at any one time.
From events that are national and manmade disruptors or disasters all the way to my meeting was delayed, I’m going to miss my flight, I need an alternative and everything in between. Travelers have become much more efficient, much more effective, and the journey’s become less I guess I’ll call it stressful for travelers as a result of the digital solutions that are being delivered and are safe. We’re at the forefront of that.
You also asked for what’s some of the difficulty….That aspect is access to content. There are disruptors in the marketplace that are changing the model — the industry typically talks about, for example, Airbnb and Uber, and there are a number of others that have found a new way to distribute travel and travel-related services, and we have and will continue to partner with the kind of new-age distributors in order to make sure that we give our travelers and our clients access to full relevant content.
We have a distribution agreement with Airbnb and we have an agreement with Uber, for example, and others to make sure that we’re where we need to be and want to be in our ability to distribute content that’s relevant for our clients because we want our clients and their travelers to come to us and be able to find the solutions that they’re looking for to completely facilitate their journey.
Skift: I actually want to come back to that, but first I’d love to hear what you think some of the challenges are.
Anderson: The disruptors are called disruptors because they create challenges, they create the need to change and innovate. I think we’re in a good position in that regard. Some of the things that are current events today create challenges; hopefully they’ll be short term, like the travel ban that is now working its way for the second time to the court system. The ban on electronic devices that was announced earlier this week. Events like the horrific incident that occurred in London earlier this week. Those kinds of things create challenges. There are always technical challenges; technology doesn’t always work perfectly. But we strive and drive to make sure that our technology is reliable and that our systems and our applications are up and running all the time, every time. Those are challenges.
But I think the the biggest challenge the industry faces, and we as intermediates face, is around maintaining access to relevant content. There’ve been attempts at new ways of distributing travel — some of which I mentioned earlier, other I haven’t — and that have been evident in the last six or eight years now. I think our industry, and at GBT particularly, has responded well to those challenges. Each day brings a new challenge and along with it comes a new opportunity.
Skift: It would be one thing just to say, ‘Okay, we can partner with Uber and Airbnb, technically, we can do that.’ But then you have these additional levels of: ‘Is it approved policy? Does it comply with duty of care? How do you know where your travelers are?’ I mean, are those complexities that just add to the difficulty in really streamlining that content and building those kind of partnerships?
Anderson: Well, our clients have to determine how their policy is designed, developed, and deployed. To take your example, we have clients who have decided Airbnb works in their travel program and we have clients that have decided that it does not. Our role is to enable those travelers who work for companies that have decided that, for example, Airbnb works for them, enable those travelers to be able to gain access to Airbnb content. For us to make certain that those clients who’ve decided that it does not work for them to manage their programs in that way. That’s no different than any other slate of preferred suppliers or providers or class of traveler who are staying at a hotel that one of our clients may choose.
They’ve developed this program, we help them with implementing and designing our technology to support their programs. There’s nothing new about any of that.
The new aspect is that we develop relationships with suppliers that are new relationships, and those new relationships, sometimes, have unique characteristics. But it’s not any different than what we’ve been doing for a long time now. It’s just that the platforms are different and there are more new interests, and the pace of new interests entering the market is accelerating.
Skift: Now that you’ve been there for a little while, what do you think are your key areas of focus moving forward from this point?
Anderson: We have a very, what I believe to be, well defined set of priorities going forward. At the top of that list is our product innovation roadmap and plan that I’ve already talked a bit about and you’ve heard us talk a bit about in the media. It is and will continue to be a real differentiator for us in the market.
Hotel is a big opportunity and priority for us, as it is for many of our competitors. Our clients want their travelers for a number of reasons — one, cost savings, two, duty of care — to come back into their managed program for their hotel needs. The level of compliance with hotel booking for most companies is in the 50 to 60% range. Helping our clients pull their travelers back into the channel for hotels, for again, for cost and for duty of care and just taking security purposes into priority.
We have a priority on strategic mergers and acquisitions. You’ve already referred, indirectly, to the one important acquisition we made in the latter part of 2016, and that was KDS. Which gives us our own proprietary online booking capability, which we will do a lot with going forward. Again, sets us apart from our competitors. We support, as was the case previously, a full range of online booking tools based on our client’s preference. We now have our own proprietary capability and we are looking at other either geographic market or capability acquisition opportunities going forward. Nothing to talk about today, but we are actively looking at a pipeline of opportunities.
Then the last one I’d mention is the mid-market….Our traditional business is medium and large corporate, multi-regional, global. We’re going to be focusing more on the mid-market. We have a healthy thriving mid-market business in the U.S. We’re looking to grow that business significantly over the next three to five years. Some of the technology that we’re developing and have acquired recently will help us in the mid-market. We’ve actually, recently, relaunched our mid-market offering in the U.S….We’re pursuing those opportunities with enthusiasm.
Skift: We talked about the disruptors, Uber and Airbnb, but what are some other important trends that you’ve been tracking broadly in corporate travel?
Anderson: Well, the macro trends would be the challenge to maintain access to relevant content, which I’ve already touched upon. Another big trend is mobile, mobile everything, all-the-time traveler connectivity, which I’ve also referred to. Mobile is moving at a pace that I believe — and forecasters like Forrester and Phocuswright believe — a very high percentage of online transactions will be platformed on a mobile device in the very near future, so moving mobile forward here at GBT is a priority that I haven’t talked about previously. We’re enriching our mobile offering. We’re working on developing mobile booking capability, which we would expect to launch in the not too distant future. Enabling travelers to be as efficient and effective as they possibly can while they’re on their journey. I think those are three big trends — access to content, and the others that I just mentioned — that take up a segment of our time to think about and, again, they’re opportunities that if we leverage, and we intend to leverage the opportunities wisely, that will create competitive advantage for us.
Skift: We hear the word consumerization a lot, or at least the sentiment of consumer behavior that they perfect in their leisure life then influencing how they travel and book travel for business. I think the overarching sentiment is prioritizing or making the satisfaction of the traveler more important in their corporate travels like it is in their leisure travels. Is that a consideration that you’re keeping in mind when you’re planning your future moves? Or is that an approach that is important to you?
Anderson: It’s critically important. Our approach is to ensure that traveler centricity is at the heart of everything we do. Now, that doesn’t mean we’ve forgotten about our corporate clients, but travelers are actually a joint interest and focus for our travel manager, procurement officer clients as well. Our joint goal along with our clients is to make sure that their travelers are very effective and very efficient. Traveler centricity is right at the middle of everything we’re thinking about as we move forward and develop and innovate. When you talked about consumerization, I think the clear channel here that’s really come to the surface in the last four or five years is the booking experience, which you referred to. Consumers find it relatively easy to book through many of the online travel sites, leisure travel sites, and when they compare that experience to the corporate booking tools, they don’t understand why the experience isn’t as efficient and as smooth and as easy to accomplish. One of those difficulties, that you actually referred to earlier, is around some of the requirements that are built in to the corporate booking tools that aren’t required for the leisure experience.
Things like policy compliance and corporate rates and backend integration into reporting and analytics technology etc., etc. One of the drivers behind our development of mobile and our acquisition of KDS was to start to make the online experience on the front end more like the consumer online experience.
For those that have looked at what has been developed with the KDS online booking tool, the efficiency and the number of steps that are required to assess the various alternatives for a trip and then make a decision is much more streamlined than the average corporate online booking experience. What we’re striving for is to get as close to that consumer experience, not because….We’re not trying to deliver a consumer application, but we’re trying to give our travelers a consumer-type experience because they when they find that in their personal lives, they’re looking for that in their corporate lives.
