Hope it’s ok to add: I’m an adult with adhd and having crashed my car semi-seriously twice now & learning from my mistakes my advice is: be honest with the ppl in the car with u if u feel u r getting overwhelmed or unfocused (I’ve pulled over to calm down bc I could feel myself getting spiraling), drive with classical music or whatever u listen to when u study if ur driving long distances alone, turn on ur gps (if u have one) even if u know the route so u have someone reminding u to focus on the road periodically, DONT RUSH TO GET PLACES!! I know it’s hard to plan out time to get somewhere early but when ur driving u need too so ur not a danger to urself & others!! Put appointments in ur calendar with enough time to drive there (trick ur brain into thinking that’s when u need to be there bc u know ur gunna be running a little late anyway!), if ur someone who frequently forgets to eat keep breakfast bars in ur car so u don’t get low blood sugar brain fog while driving, also keep a water bottle in ur car so u don’t get dehydration sleepy/brain fog. I also find it easier to stay focused on the road with the windows rolled down but I know that stresses a lot of ppl.
Hi I just wanted to know if you have any tips on driving? I'm a terrible driver because my focus changes very easily (i.e my peripheral vision catches a girl walking by the sidewalk, she's wearing a bright neon pink sweater, and my brain tells me I have to look) and I tend to shift to that 5 seconds, and it makes me really terrified to drive in really crowded lanes or by bridges, because my inattention puts me and others at risk.
I have never driven because I am terrified of being in control of a ton of metal!! I am a terrible bike rider though.
It is literally in the criteria for adult ADHD to be a bad driver, and that really scares me. The only advice I can offer is to take your meds before you drive.
