Why do you think people love Yelena but dislike Zeke, Floch, and Gabi?

Speaking from personal experience, Yelena is very pretty.

That’s it.

No greater depth whatsoever.

Speaking from slightly less shallow viewpoint (v questionable. untrustworthy), Zeke, Floch, and Gabi are all characters that grate on people in different ways. Zeke’s probably closest to Yelena in terms of a true compare/contrast situation, so I’ll just very quickly throw the cult children into their own cage.

Floch’s initial purpose comes to light during the Serum Bowl. No one survived with a clean record there, no matter what you thought of their individual perspectives. Everyone hated everyone, and then there was Floch, and why are you even here why is your hair like that. Following that, Floch’s role in the plot has been to slam down the devil button like it’s going out of style. He thinks in black and white in a greyish series, and believes entirely in riding the black wave for the sake of survival.

He doesn’t have much nuance. He is an angry, radicalized teenager. The kindest read on him is that his trauma has transformed him into someone who believes in shooting his own sense of empathy in the head. He is not trying to improve anything, he is trying to conquer the world in the name of winning–which is a character type that can survive and be popular, but Floch does it by hiding behind the biggest bully in the playground and voting in favor of throwing children out of planes.

He does a lot of bad things, and rather than trying to get better, he keeps looking for excuses to behave worse.

His hair is also dumb.

Gabi is a kid. Right away, there are going to be people who are not about that. For reasons that have nothing to do with anything, child characters inspire greater annoyance than many other character types.

Gabi is a kid who completely buys into Marley’s brainwashing.

Gabi reminds everyone of Eren as a child.

While there are many, many sympathetic facets to all of that, all of it together is a boiling pot of hate. Gabi’s position as a helpless child inspires sympathy for some, but her position as a helpless child means she’s a helpless child. She’s there to broaden our perception of the setting and tug at our heartstrings. Her influence over anything actually related to the plot is extremely limited.

Gabi is a character you have to connect with emotionally. She is there for pathos. If you have your pathos booked elsewhere and aren’t in the mood to sign up for more, you’re going to have a bad time with her. Her struggles might make perfect, rational sense, but siting through a little kid who knows nothing about the world learning that she knows nothing about the world when the audience already knew she knew nothing about the world while she was blowing people up with a laugh–

She is the type of character some people are always going to opt out on. And once you’ve decided you’re not invested in a character, every single second spent on them is going to do nothing but fuel the frustration.

So that’s two of fandom’s most wanted. As told by someone whose entire picture of fandom is presently formed through hearsay.

Then we have Zeke.

Again from hearsay, some people love Zeke.

I’m going to be mean and say a bunch of that is aesthetic. Though to be perfectly honest, aesthetic is like. the most valuable thing in a comic. Valuing coolness factor should not be a diss, it should be a badge of honor.

But the guy starts out as this creepy monkey monstrosity, casually popping out titan eyes and nonchalantly ordering murders like he don’t give a fuck. He likes baseball. He’s got glasses, muscles, he’s blond, he can beat up Reiner, he has a super tragic backstory, he loves his baby brother, hates war while biding his time on the battlefield to stop all war forever, and he sells his whole thing like he’s tooooootes in control, for sure.

Then he’s an extremist. Extreme views are fun. You don’t have to agree with a character to enjoy them burning down the world with their horrible ideas. Find a character who full-heartedly believes in something, and even if that something is horrific, there’s a charisma to the conviction.

Aesthetic.

I like Yelena because gosh darn is she pretty. She’s also nuts. She shoots people in the head as a pattern of behavior. She idolizes monsters. She’s down with crossdressing. She has a unique eye design.

Yelena believes in watching her chosen gods give birth to a new world. She will endure humiliations and human rights’ violations just to see it happen. She very much does not mind shooting someone in the head if they’re a problem. Or annoying.

Yelena is exactly the kind of crazy that’s fun. There’s a fire in her that she wants to unleash, and her conviction in its value is so deep that she is perfectly comfortable accepting turning everything around her to ashes. That’s what the world will use to be reborn.

Conviction is compelling. Yelena has it in spades. She’s also, despite everything, very civil. One of the people she shoots in the head gets shot because he’s being a misogynist bigot. Yelena has standards. She’s smooth and suave and truly wants you to agree with her.

Zeke, on the other hand, is a shady fuck.

Acolytes, as a general rule, are easier to forgive than the true brains of the operation. Someone getting sucked into something they shouldn’t have is more understandable than someone coming up with something they shouldn’t have.

Zeke, as the person who originally comes up with the sterilization plan, is going to bear the brunt of the blame for that, no matter how cooperative his underlings are.

Yelena believes Eren and Zeke have the right to change the world because she is in awe of their power.

That is way more palatable than Zeke thinking he and Eren have the right to change the world because he knows best.

Zeke thinks he’s just the cleverest, and the question of being allowed to make the decisions he’s making never crosses his mind. He hates war, and he’s going to fix everything forever for Eldians. That justifies every single awful thing he’s done, in his mind.

He treats war as a game of baseball.

It’s okay, because he says it’s awful.

He turns Connie’s village into mindless titans and sets them loose just to see it happen.

It’s okay, the plan means he’s on Marley’s side right now.

He turns Utgard into his personal playground, killing people who are doing nothing but trying to survive.

But it’s not like it matters if he does it with a smile.

The first time he judges himself is when he feels angry at the people he’s massacring. That’s wrong. It’s improper to kill people because you hate them. It needs to be done with a light heart and an upbeat attitude.

Zeke acts like he has standards, but he doesn’t. He has principles, but every single one has an asterisk that comes into play to remind him that it’s okay when he does something wrong, because he is, ultimately, a tool of the greater good.

What Zeke does has been divorced from moral consequences in his mind. He does not hold himself responsible for anything he’s done. It was necessary. He was saving people. He was being a good sleeper agent.

Zeke is a child playing a game.

Yelena believes in every step of Zeke’s plan, and is comfortable enough with his atrocities. He is a god to her, and she worships all of his actions.

And because that is the driving force of Yelena, she’s not a hypocrite about it.

When Yelena does something, all of her believes in it. She is committed to an unholy extreme, and besides being very hot, it keeps her conviction consistent. You believe her regret over Liberio’s casualties. You believe her desire to make friends. You believe her admiration.

Yelena isn’t covering up any of the dirty parts of her that are at odds with what she’s doing; what she’s doing is so important to her that she’ll accept the indignity. Marley is full of monsters, yes, but bagging and tagging prospective enemies is a workable system.

Zeke doesn’t care about what he’s doing. It isn’t that it’s excusable for a greater good, it’s that it’s irrelevant in the name of his greater good.

Yelena might be part of something terribly fucked up, but she’s in it, and she’s a true believer.

Zeke, meanwhile, is on Floch’s level.

Whatever his goal is, winning has taken priority over living a life that reflects his principles. As steadfast as his willingness to sink to the next level is, it’s empty. What he’s fighting for is, ultimately, a reflection of the life he’s led. He is turning the world into a place where no one is responsible for the future they create, because there is no future.

Zeke is running away.

Yelena is running towards.

Aesthetic is way cooler when it’s not skin deep.

Not that there’s anything wrong with that.
