Omega Shame Part 2
Part 1 / Part 3
Thank you guys for all your interest! It made me super happy to see so many people excited about my writing, so I hope you enjoy and stay tuned for the last part soon!
Warnings: Angst, depression, mentions of fighting (bc hero training)
***
The classroom didn't smell right.  Not only was your serotonin inducing scent the class had gotten accustomed to in the past couple months missing, but a certain caramel smell had a hint of burnt rubber and ash to it. Despite some of the girls hearing commotion coming from your room, you didn’t answer their calls or knocks, so no one knew what was going on. The only knowledge the class had was that you weren’t in class and Bakugou was upset. Well, more upset than he usually was.
Even his best friends, whether or not he would admit that’s what they were to him, would earn growls and bared teeth if they got too close. Other than that though, Bakugou was generally unresponsive. Only caring when people got too close, but he didn’t respond when Aizawa called on him, or when the lunch bell rang. Only shoving the teachers hand off his shoulder when he came to check up on the blond.
Bakugou was just too caught up in his thoughts to really be aware of his surroundings as he followed his class aimlessly to the cafeteria.
Even though his body was in the P.E Training grounds, his brain was back in time to your dorm room. Back when your body began to tremble at the sight of him, the way salty tears rushed from your eyes when he started to speak. Your throat squeaking as you begged him to spare the nest you had constructed. It was beautifully made, if you had asked him. The way your soft blankets were woven together with your favorite weekend clothes, pillows being used to stable the walls. It looked incredibly comfortable.
Bakugou knew that Omegas could get upset if their nest was intruded without permission. But he also knew he was nowhere near your circular haven. Yet, you were crying, shaking, and begging.
It was then that it dawned on the hothead that you were scared of him. His omega was Terrified of him. It made his heart beat erratically, how could he make someone he cared about so scared of him? Especially his own omega. It was his job to keep you safe, to take care of you and make sure you were comfortable. You trusted him to fulfill this role, but you thought he was going to destroy your nest?
It made Bakugous’ buzz in confusion. It made no sense that you would be freaking out just because your alpha walked in your room.
Unless you weren't even his omega by choice. What if you just accepted his courting gift because you were afraid he would hurt you? He had been told multiple times throughout his life that he needed to stop being so aggressive,  that he would scare omegas away, but he had always brushed those comments off. He had thought that he would find someone who liked him despite his anger, and he thought you were that person.
Clearly, though, you were too fearful of him to even reject his proposal. Your trembling body inside of your nest was undeniable proof of that. You were too scared to even tell him you were nesting, and if the sight was evidence enough you didn’t seem to have or want his scent anywhere close to your nest. He should have noticed it before. What kind of alpha scared those they were supposed to protect?
You probably just got off of your meds to make him happy too. You had made so many sacrifices to keep him happy, and the thought of that made his blood boil. He had been a terrible alpha to you. He had to end this, he couldn’t put you through anymore pain. His inner alpha cried at the thought of having hurt you.
His large hand moved towards his opposite wrist, gently shimmying the bracelet that sat on it off. It was your courting gift to him, since you insisted on making him something in return. It was simple, made of skillfully twisted threads in his hero costume colors. His heart had skipped a beat the moment you presented it to him, not that he would tell anyone that. Especially not now, not when all the memories he shared with you were put into perspective.
He remembered how it felt as though the threads burnt his skin on its way past. How it dragged his heart down with it as it fell to the floor. Since then, he felt numb to the outside world. It didn’t matter how many times Kirishima tried to get him involved in their 1-1 match, he mostly just stood there, letting his instincts do the bare minimum to protect his body.
“Come on man!” His body dodged another hit just enough before slacking again, causing the redheaded alpha to growl. “You’re not responding to anything and you smell, honestly bad bro. What’s going on with you!?”
The only thing “going on” in Katsuki’s brain was replaying the pain in your eyes over and over. Replaying how you were scared, no, terrified of the person who was supposed to protect you. His omega wasn’t his omega anymore, and his alpha felt broken. He felt alone.
He could only focus on how he failed to do his basic duties. How he failed you. Everyone had been right when they critiqued his anger. He was too aggressive to deserve an Omega. Clearly he couldn’t treat one right no matter how much their smile made serotonin speed through his brain. If he couldn’t protect you from himself it was ridiculous to think he would do anything but fuck up protecting Japan from villains. He was a terrible alpha who couldn’t even treat an Omega properly, so what was the point? He wasn’t even good at his innate purpose.
By now Kirishima was getting desperate. All day his best friend had been growing more and more despondent, and he was scared for what that meant. He just needed Bakugou to talk to him, Kirishima wanted to be reassured that he was okay. And he had an idea of how to pull Bakugou back into the present, even if he didn’t like it.
“I don’t want to do this but, I’m really worried about you. Bakugou is this about (Y/n)?” The blondes alpha perked up at the mention of your name, drawing Bakugou’s head up with it.
“The girls said something happened in (Y/n)’s room last night and,” He hesitated, ruby eyes falling to Bakugou's large wrists. “You’re not wearing the courting bracelet she made for you anymore”
His words caused a whimper to leave Katsukis throat. Kirishima had no idea what kind of pain that reminder brought to Bakugou, but he could guess. The way the blonds hands clenched and brows furrowed made Kirishima's heart drop, he hated bringing up things that could hurt Katsuki. But he could only fix the problem if he knew what was wrong, and for that he needed Bakugou to talk to him.
“Did, did you guys break up?” Kirishima kept his distance, afraid of what Bakugou would do once he snapped out of his trance. But all Bakugou did was begin to shake, blinking furiously as he became aware of his surroundings once again along with the hot tears that flooded his eyes. Kirishima ran towards his friend then, placing a hand on the other alphas shoulder in a hope to be any bit comforting without overwhelming his friend. He analyzed the way Bakugous nose scrunched, causing his large canines to show as the first sob burst out of his trembling frame. It was so powerful that the blond lost his balance, falling into the stunned redheads arms. Face tucked into his friends chest, shielded from the attention his sobs were bringing from his entire class.
“Bakugou…” Kirishima ran his hands up and down Bakugous back gently feeling the way the blond fisted his shirt in desperation, “What happened? You can tell me.”
“I’m a terrible alpha,” Bakugous voice was shaky and Kirishima almost felt guilty at how relieved he was to hear it. “No you’re not man, wha-” “Yes I am!” Bakugous voice reached the same volume as his sobs that interrupted his speech. “She thought that I was going to destroy her nest, she was scared of me. I was supposed to defend her when really I’m the one she wanted protection from.”
Krishima didn’t know how to respond to what his friend said. Eyes too wide in confusion as he looked towards his teacher for answers. You had always been absolutely smitten with Bakugou, just his presence in the room made it seem like you radiated love and positivity. It didn’t seem that Bakugou needed any further encouragement to continue though, as his next statement sent ice down the spines of the whole class.
“I failed as an alpha… I don’t want to be alive anymore.” All Bakugou wanted to do in that moment was curl up and die. He didn’t have a purpose anymore, so he didn’t see the point of existing. It was then that his body seemed to shut back down in order to conserve energy, he began to slack in Kirishima's arms leaving him sitting on the ground despite the redheads' many protests. The revelation of how his best friend felt bringing tears to his own eyes, and a recognition to his teachers.
“Aizawa, what's happening to Bakugou?” Kirishima asked, struggling to hold himself together as he knelt in front of his friend. Bakugou’s eyes seemed more void of life than ever as he stared aimlessly at Kirishima's shirt.
“Someone call Recovery Girl, I fear that Bakugou has developed an Alpha depression.”

hi im kinda new to this can you pls explain to me why everybody hates lauryn? all i know is she wants kyle to be a dad and he isn't
here we go! putting this under the cut so i don’t flood people’s dash who don’t care <3
okay so bit of backstory first cos im gonna try and do this in chronological order, she is chloe goodman’s sister and she used to go out with marcus rashford’s brother, apart from that she was pretty much a nobody. i also dk how much you know about kyle but basically he’s been with annie for agessss and they have 3 sons together. at the start of 2020 it came out that lauryn was pregnant with a mystery england footballer’s baby and it was kept a secret who it was for ages and just said that they were in a whirlwind romance and the baby was a miracle because she has endometriosis and pos meaning she would struggle to conceive naturally. it was outed cos of pap photos that have been said were staged by her, pretty much the whole of this has been staged by her tbh but it was later announced that the baby daddy was kyle walker and all hell broke loose tbh.
all throughout her pregnancy and a bit after the baby was born she wouldn’t reveal the gender but constantly baited it and hyped it up and drew a lot of attention to the baby’s gender (a little bit of backstory to this is that annie obviously has 3 boys as we said before but she always always wanted a girl and has always been v public with that fact, she also had a miscarriage which wasn’t talked about until after the baby was born but hindsight makes this whole gender situation worse but back to the story). her sister was also pregnant at the same time as her and was public saying she was having a girl so lauryn used to post stories with girls’ baby clothes and pink things in basically to just bait she was having a girl when she knew all along it was a boy, there’s literally no reason for this apart from her wanting to spite annie and imply that she was having a girl baby with the man she loved to hurt her for no reason.
cut forward to when the baby is born and she starts to promote these bracelets which have different ones for different situations, so she has one for anxiety, one for sleep, one for fertility (you can see where this is going) and there’s a few points with these scam bracelets. first off she came out and said she was wearing one at the time she slept with kyle so this baby perhaps wasn’t so much an accident on her part as she was manifesting fertility and that she’d become pregnant basically, take from that what you will but it was clearly her intention to fall pregnant with his baby when she knew he was with another woman long term and had 3 little boys with her. and the second part to it is just what an absolute scam those bracelets are, they’re not cheap and they target vulnerable groups of people and profit off their struggles which is obviously so immoral and disgusting when a fuckin bead bracelet clearly can’t make you fertile or make you sleep better or any of this shit, it’s taking advantage of people in desperate need and taking money from vulnerable people, it’s awful.
so now the baby is born and she’s said it’s a boy but hasn’t announced the name and allegedly didn’t pick the name until he was 4 months old or something, but she decides that they need a name to call him so decide to say his name is junior. now you can immediately see the issue with this, she’s been banging on for the whole of her pregnancy that she’s a single mother and he’s not involved blah blah blah then calls him junior, which ofc people asked if the name was kyle junior and she as much as said it was and started referring to him as junior until she posted a video of the baby holding a necklace that said KW. obviously calling your baby junior implies that they have the dad’s name and are the jr version of the dad so when she posted the KW necklace alongside a caption that said ‘for those asking why it doesn’t say JW, KW are his true initials’ ofc everybody assumed his name was kyle walker junior, and she let this go on for 6 MONTHS. she wore this necklace that says KW everywhere it’s lit in all of her instagram photos, it literally came across as a trophy just shouting that she got knocked up by kyle walker and just using it as a constant reminder to anyone and everyone that her baby was half famous footballer kyle walkers regardless of whether he was involved or not, baring in mind in the same breath she’s continuing to go on about how she’s a single mother and doing it all on her own. her saying she’s doing it all on her own is a load of shit too because her family helps her constantly and she always has someone looking after him with her and she lives in a big fancy house so she’s putting across she’s struggling and a single mother out on her own but that’s not the truth.
she also kept giving questionable parenting advice out on her story and endorsing products and methods that weren’t the most effective and weren’t recommended, even a blanket method that im sure was said to be harmful and she’s promoted many products that she shouldn’t have just in the name of money and fame and clout, she isn’t qualified to be giving out parenting advice to the scale she is and i understand she’s gotten experience but she talks like she’s a professional and holds q&as giving advice she’s not qualified to give and considering she promotes half dodgy products, it’s not the best situation. two more random things before we’re caught up to what’s happened today, she put the baby in a city jersey then the next week put him in a liverpool jersey just to spite kyle LMAO and they all went on holiday to dubai and im pretty sure paparazzi isnt allowed in dubai that’s why all the celebs go there but she was papped there so she must’ve set that up too lmaoooooo. but now we’re at today.
basically it started by kyle posting a picture of his own personal football boots that he played in for the final match of the season im sure, and he had printed on the names and dates of birth of all 3 kids he had with annie, and as you can quite imagine, lauryn wasn’t very happy with this. so she went straight on her stories preaching how horrific it was that he didn’t include kairo’s name on his boots and he’s done nothing but he cute and innocent and kyle was ‘bullying’ his own son which is obvs the wrong word to use but she’s daft and has been throwing around the word bullying, and talking about how she won’t let their son be left out, baring in mind she constantly says how she’s a single mother and prides herself on that she doesn’t have him involved and that he’s a horrible person etc etc. so all of her little minions who love her started replying to her story saying he was disgusting blah blah blah and decided as a collective with her encouragement to spam his page with kairo’s name and demand justice for kairo or something so after he got a few comments he turned the comments off from the post about the boots so they went to his first post before the boots which was a memorial post for the victims of the manchester arena attack. fully grown women commenting on a memorial post for such a tragic event demanding to know where kairos name was or spamming his name letter by letter, first off it’s just batshit crazy but second off how disrespectful?? from lauryn as well to encourage it and think of nobody but herself and want the attention because realistically it wasn’t gonna achieve anything but slightly irk him that he had to turn the comments off.
she’s also been encouraging people to email puma themselves and demand to know why they did it as if they had any input on what kyle had on his personal boots, puma probably had no idea about any of this and certainly didn’t do it on purpose to cause a storm so there’s no reason for them to be complaining to puma. she posted a list of what she wanted to happen including kyles post to be removed, the boots to be pulled (i don’t think she realises they were just personal boots for kyle and not a product for the general public to buy), a public apology to kairo and a public statement to be put out, none of which would solve the greater situation or help the situation that’s already been caused.
she posted saying kyle was bullying the baby and mentally abusing him which is disgusting to be throwing around when that’s not the case at all cos in reality kyles just trying to mend his relationships with annie and his family while keeping lauryn and the baby out of it like she keeps going on about, but then when it comes down to it she uses his surname, posts about it 24/7, wants his name on his boots, uses him for clout, walks around with a KW necklace on etc etc etc. most recently she’s created a petition to get pumas attention to do all of what i listed before and i think about 600 people have signed it so far.
i think that’s all although im sure anons will chip in if ive missed anything, that’s if anybody’s actually read this far 😭 so yes, more than you bargained for probably anon! story time with han! xx

Escape (4)

Series Masterlist
Maria Hill Masterlist
A/N: Question, does everyone plan their series? I checked my plan for this and all it said was ‘Talking, being a smartass then escaping, then the INTENSE PART’ for this part, which is basically what happens but like, still.
“You said you didn’t want this life, I can get you out of it.” Maria offered, you groaned.
“I doubt that, but tell me how anyway.” You said, smirking and walking to sit next to Maria on one of the barstools. Your knee brushing hers lightly as you turned to face her, Maria subtly clenched her jaw, causing your smirk to grow, this was going to be better than you thought.
“If you work for SHIELD for a year, they could get your criminal record cleared and a fake identity.” Maria offered, clearing her throat when your knee brushed hers again. You rested your head on your right hand, observing her as she turned to look at you.
“A year of following orders?” You asked, unamused as you raised an eyebrow.
“I might be able to get you in with the Avengers for some time.” Maria thought aloud, you tilted your head skeptically.
“You’re telling me the minimum to get out of this is to either work for Nick Fury or Captain America for at least 6 months?” You verified, Maria hesitantly nodded, about to pull some files out of a bag which had been resting next to her when you spoke.
“You can’t just clear my record if I promise to lay low for a year?” You asked, exasperated, Maria raised an eyebrow.
“You expect me to trust the word of a liar?” Maria asked you grinned apologetically, looking down at the ground before meeting her cyan gaze.
“If you’re mad at me for the date, I am sorry about that.” You apologized, fidgeting slightly with your hands.
“Why did you do it?” Maria asked, you half shrugged in response.
“I didn’t have a better way to spend the night, and you asked me out too politely for me to reject.” You told the last part of the sentence a lie.
“So when is the backup going to take me in?” You asked Maria’s eyes widened, you sighed and slid off the stool, walking towards your room with Maria following you.
“There were files in your bag, but any third rate agent could see you pressed a button of some sort, since I didn’t agree to your terms, you’re calling backup to take me in.” You explained, walking into your room to change.
In all honesty, you didn’t want this to happen, you should’ve checked your bags for trackers. This was one of the few hideouts you liked, now SHIELD knew about it. You knew you could get out of this easily, Maria knew it too.
“I don’t have an alternative for you,” Maria stated, standing in the doorway, curious to what you were doing, she had a few knives tucked into her dress, a thigh strap holding a gun but she didn’t want to attack you.
“Well I have an alternative, turn around so I can change.” You quipped, moving to quickly take your shirt off.
Maria turned around quickly, a prominent blush on her face, you used the opportunity and hurriedly slammed the door shut, shutting in the deadbolt and moving to your closet to get the tactical suit. You heard the brunette trying to kick down the door and groaned, tripping over your suit as you rushed around to get as many of your belongings as you could into your backpack.
Black cars with the SHIELD logo skidded to a halt just outside your house, you saw them through the window and picked up a grenade you had in one of the drawers. You smashed open a window with the nearby lamp, throwing the grenade near the cars so they couldn’t chase you. The cars turned over, the damage wasn’t too bad.
you glanced back to make sure no one had been killed before grabbing a few time bombs from a hidden compartment in your closet. After slipping on the bracelet to activate the time bombs, you tucked a few in your pocket.
“You know, this was one of my favorite hideouts you’re ruining.” You shouted through the door when you heard the front door being broken down.
“If you’d agreed, this could’ve been your home,” Maria shouted back, you heard rapid footsteps approaching your door.
You hid a time bomb inside the closet and rushed to the ensuite bathroom, leaving another bomb there and climbing out the large window and jumping onto the grass-covered floor. You looked around, SHIELD cars surrounded the house, there was an empty spot where the woods were, but you needed to make sure the house was blown up in case they arrested the person you’d bought the house from.
You threw a knife at the thigh of the SHIELD agent guarding the front door, planting a bomb there, and shoving the agent behind the car so they weren’t affected before running towards the woods, hesitating to press the button on your wristband to set off the bombs. The only papers showing your existence were in the closet, you clenched your jaw and squinted your eyes shut, pressing the button and watching the house blow up.
The rest of the agents rushed in and made their way to the back of the house through the forest where there was a car that hadn’t been turned on its side. You quickly ran in, grinning when you noticed the agent had left the key in before backing out of the road and driving as fast as you could away from the burning house, regret filling your head.
-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-
After a few hours of driving on the highway, you ditched the car away from a road, making your way into an abandoned building to change into a fav/color crew neck sweatshirt, high waisted black leggings, and black sneakers. You moved to the side of the road, making the hitchhiking signal on the road heading towards the city.
A kind woman in her mid-forties noticed you and stopped, welcoming you in. You scanned her, she drove a black land rover, she wore navy blue capris and a light blue, quarter sleeved t-shirt. She had dark brown skin tones, hazel eyes, and short black hair, she smiled at you and welcomed you in.
You made up a backstory about running away from your parents and trying to find opportunities in the city, she bought the story and offered you some money which you quickly rejected. She drove you to the heart of the city, pointing out a few cheap hotels to stay in on her way before dropping you off at an indie coffee house.
After ordering a cinnamon hot chocolate, you flopped down on one of the couches near the back of the shop, near a few bookshelves. You took a book off the bookshelf and started reading, your backpack leaning against your seat. The waitress gave you your drink and chatted with you once in a while as she worked. You read and had your drink for almost an hour, ordering another drink just to feel a little peaceful.
The waitress got off her shift and sat next to you on the couch while talking to you about your book, she was nice. Her name was Maxine, she had a light brown skin tone, blue eyes, curly hair, and an athletic build, she talked to you about random things, about her job and everything she could. You smiled at her and continued talking, trying not to attract the attention of anyone else, until you noticed a large explosion near the cafe.
You tugged the backpack near to yourself and looked outside, there was a tall man encircled in a fire, most of it shooting out of his hands at some Iron Man suits.
“Why the heck is the iron legion here?” Maxine asked, you shrugged, clenching your jaw as you debated to engage or not.
The suits were blown out of the air by fire blasts, all of the people in the coffee shop ran towards the back door, Maxine tried to get you out but you said you’d help a few people then go with her, but you had other plans. You noticed a few of the Avengers get involved, it wasn’t like them to get involved on the streets.
You groaned and rushed out the door, pulling a few knives out of your pocket as you analyzed the scene in front of you. The man was tall, average build, styled black hair and sharp features, he wore some sort of a tactical black suit with the sleeves cut off, he scowled at you and started throwing fireballs.
You dodged them easily, glancing around to see SHIELD agents coming in from both sides of the block, there were Avengers trying to shoot at him and stun him. Tony Stark, accompanied by Falcon, the Black Widow, and even Captain America was trying to stop this homicidal maniac.
“Ma’am, you need to get away from this scene.” Steve Rogers walked over to you, you raised an eyebrow at the statement.
“I think I know how to handle myself, star-spangled banner.” You quipped, using one of your knives and throwing it at the psychopath's thigh when he wasn’t looking.
The man screamed out pathetically, yanking the knife out of his thigh and throwing at you, you pushed the man in front of you out of the way, ducking under the knife smoothly. Steve’s eyes widened and nodded at you, rushing off to shield an agent who almost got blasted.
The Avengers could do little to nothing at a distance, Iron Man was flying in the air, shooting blasts which the man somehow dodged easily, trying to shoot him out of the air while keeping everyone at a distance.
You ran into the coffee shop and grabbed the fire extinguisher, taking it towards the fight with you as quickly as you could.
“Cover me!” You screamed at an agent, he looked at you confusedly.
“Do as she says.” A familiar voice commanded from behind you, you whipped your head around to see Maria standing there, decked in a tactical suit similar to the rest of the SHIELD agents but in navy blue.
You grinned and gave her a nod, the agent shot at the man, turning his attention away from you and exposing his back to you. You pressed the pump on the fire extinguisher, instantly knocking out the flames dancing on the man’s back. He looked stunned, looking down at himself, you threw a small taser in his direction where the extinguisher didn’t blanket him, he shook and fell to the ground.
“And remind me who you are?” Tony asked, gesturing to you while still flying, he was stunned that a woman in civilian clothing had just taken out a threat who he couldn’t.
You rolled your eyes and started walking away, slinging your backpack over your shoulder. You were stopped by someone yanking the back.
“You know you can’t leave,” Maria stated, you almost groaned when you turned around.
“But you know I have to.” You answered, meeting her intense gaze.
“If I asked you to stay, would you?” Maria asked, her voice soft and hesitant.
Your eyes widened slightly in surprise, you were at a loss for words, you opened and closed your mouth like a fish, trying to think of something to say but you couldn’t. You searched her blue eyes for an emotion, something that would tell you she was lying, but it was sincere.
“I don’t know, I really don’t, I wish I could give you an answer.” You answered, sighing and gesturing to the mess around you, shifting your weight slightly as you looked down at your feet.
“Just come with me for a few days, we’ll clear everything out so you can escape this,” Maria said, thumb hooking under your face to force you to look up at her.
You bit your lip, unsure of what to do, you knew you had to decide soon when you noticed SHIELD agents and some of the Avengers approaching you to ask questions.
“Fine,” You sighed, Maria, smiled at you, taking her hands away from your face and winking at you before heading off to deal with everyone else.
Maybe Maria could help you escape.

38 Experts Share the Worst Content Marketing Advice
Tumblr media
General Success Tips / Content Marketing World / Productivity / Speaker Advice 38 Experts Share the Worst Content Marketing Advice It’s graduation season, the time of year when advice abounds But let’s be honest, not all advice given to new grads, new employees, or even seasoned professionals is worth following We asked the experts presenting at Content Marketing World 2019 to share the worst content marketing advice they ever received or heard They had a lot to say The thoughts they share form a don’t-do-this guide covering everything from strategy and SEO to quantity and quality Just do it Something is better than nothing This belief is detrimental to businesses As soon as you hear yourself say, “this will do,” or “let’s just get this sent out,” you’re in trouble Posting something average, be it an email, social post, or blog is just going to put people off from wanting to read your content in a depreciating cycle. – Andrew Pickering and Peter Gartland , founders, Andrew and Pete Don’t write it down We don’t need to create a content marketing strategy Our president (vice president of business development) has it in his/her head He/she tells us who to target and what to write – Achinta Mitra , president, Tiecas Inc Make it up as you go Get started and figure it out as you go I can’t think of another strategic business discipline where people are so comfortable with a dabble approach. It’s the fastest way to spending money with no return – and a great way to discourage your marketing staff, too. – Sarah Mitchell , founder, Typeset Give them a taste first “Let’s just test it”“We’re looking for the appetite”“We just need to prove it works so let’s just get some stuff up there” I dread sentences like those Unless a brand has a clear reason why it’s creating content, it won’t stick, no matter how much glue you use – Ahava Leibtag , president, Aha Media Group Create it now Create content before gaining enough insights into what buyers want – George Stenitzer , founder and chief content officer, Crystal Clear Communications Write and distribute first My pet peeve is when people are told to start with their tactics and channels How can you know HOW and WHERE before you know WHO and WHAT? – Michael Weiss , vice president, Creative Circle Go for clicks Getting the click is enough Content should drive a specific change in thinking in behavior after the click That’s the real goal – Tamsen Webster , founder and chief message strategist, Find The Red Thread Sell, sell, sell Nothing raises my hackles like overtly sales-focused advertising positioned as content marketing I know sales are often the end goal, but content marketing should employ a light touch and soft sell — if there’s any attempt to sell at all – Amanda Changuris , manager, social media marketing, AAA – The Auto Club Group Fill up the funnel When you reduce content marketing solely to working people through the sales funnel, you lose a big opportunity to build a true relationship Marketers who think that content is all about revenue haven’t walked a day in their customers’ shoes It’s about helping first, and then the sale will come – Carla Johnson , speaker, author, storyteller Pick the demand-gen lane only Content marketing is just a demand generation thing It is, of course, fantastic for that But to limit content to that single swim lane is to miss a huge opportunity: content for brand creation, positioning, and audience building By all means, pour awesome content into the revenue machine But save some budget for big things: Celebrate your beliefs Demonstrate your values Walk your talk – Doug Kessler , co-founder, Velocity Partners Don’t think selling Content marketing isn’t about selling Oh, yes it is It’s about selling helpful ideas that lead people naturally to seek to solve their problems with what your product enables to gain value (business outcomes) that wasn’t attainable before – Ardath Albee , CEO and B2B marketing strategist, Marketing Interactions Inc Treat content like ads Content marketing can be measured the same as advertising It can be measured, but not in the same way as advertising Just like you don’t measure sprints and marathons the same way, you have to consider that content marketing is the long game and has longer lasting effect – A Lee Judge , co-founder and chief marketing officer, Content Monsta Show perfection I once heard someone say every piece of content put out by a brand should look perfect, like an ad. Know what people love to ignore? – Adam Ritchie , principal, Adam Ritchie Brand Direction Think marketing first To think of content marketing as marketing rather than content It’s always content first if you want to make something that is going to resonate In a race to stand out from the pack, marketers are often told to adopt a specific storytelling tactic before they’ve worked out the story This will lead to weak executions Determine the story first and then develop the best way to tell that story – Annie Granatstein , head of WP BrandStudio, The Washington Post Follow the crowd Blanket statements made about what strategy, topics, format, length, etc, that all marketers should follow Just because some people – or even a lot of them – are seeing success with account-based marketing or video or (insert hot trend) does not mean it’s right for your business challenge, audience, etc – Carmen Hill , principal strategist and writer, CHILL Content Do what the other monkey does To pursue a strategy or tactic because another brand had success with it You know what they say about mutual funds? “Past performance is no guarantee of future results” Be different And figure out what works from those different things – Dennis Shiao , consultant, Dennis Shiao Consulting Stay in the successful comfort zone “If it’s not broken, don’t fix it” can be good advice, but, if you follow it for too long, it can mean you’re creating ho-hum, boring, additive content Sometimes you do need to move out of your comfort zone and break your content mold in order to refresh your audience’s brand connection – Erika Heald , marketing consultant, Erika Heald Consulting Do what the data says Having a blind “data-is-everything” mentality Is it even the right data? Ask better questions to make sure what you’re looking at is meaningful And let’s find the big human stories IN the data They are there and it’s our job to tell them in creative ways No great marketing video gets shared over and over by customers with a header, “Hey man, check out these emotionally compelling pieces of data!” You’re in the storytelling business – data is just part of how we get there – Kathy Klotz-Guest , founder, Keeping it Human Take the easier route Focus on the “low-hanging fruit” first Anyone can tackle the easy stuff If you want to position you or your company as a thought leader, you’ve got to put content out there that helps your customers solve problems that no one else can help them solve That’s not easy That’s not low-hanging fruit – Courtney Cox Wakefield , group manager, digital marketing, Children’s Health Snack it Focus on snackable content For a long time, this advice led to a lethal form of reductionism that slowed many content marketers from mastering long form, which has implications for mastering the integration relationship between shorter and longer form content and for understanding how to make short-form, high-impact content – Carlos Abler , leader of content marketing strategy, 3M Pick one format Focus all of your energy on one form of content (mainly video) Spending some energy on different forms of content helps keep your content fresh and on multiple platforms where different audiences can find you – Jason Schemmel , Twitch streamer and digital marketer, GSDChat Make moving content More video Basically, it’s the suggestion to do a tactic because it’s a trend without actually planning strategy around content The tactic-first advice is short-sighted Planning a content strategy as it aligns to business objectives, the customer journey, and buyer personas will produce content that is much more apt to increase engagement and subsequently increase revenue And yes, video may be part of the content strategy – Pamela Muldoon , campaign and content strategist, The Pedowitz Group Optimize for SEO To spend a ton of time writing blogs that are SEO optimized If you write good content that is relevant to your brand and current events, you will naturally start to rank higher in Google search – Griffin Thall , CEO and co-founder, PuraVida Bracelets Stuff it You should target x number of keywords per page – Wil Reynolds , founder, Seer Interactive Base keywords on available data sources Advice I frequently hear around topic/keyword research The troubling advice involves relying on data sources that use paid advertising data, inaccurate organic search volume metrics, and heavily outdated/sampled static databases to drive content and editorial decisions. Starting with flawed metrics leads to inappropriate expectations and content that isn’t differentiated. – Jeff Coyle , co-founder and chief product officer, MarketMuse Don’t worry about keywords SEO keywords don’t matter (This advice) stems from the technology advances Google made with RankBrain, its machine learning algorithm Google looks at ideas and concepts on a page, not necessarily keywords The reality is that keywords still matter If you don’t have a relevant phrase showcased on a website (one that’s not too competitive), you can’t rank – Mike Murray , president, Online Marketing Coach Do everything There’s a pervasive mentality that you have to be on every channel and offer every type of tool Not every company will benefit from a podcast or a Snapchat presence Not every industry will value e-books or SMS Content marketing must fit the needs and behaviors of your specific audience and potential customers – Zontee Hou , co-lead of consulting, Convince and Convert Go wide Publish as much content in as many different channels as possible Now that’s a recipe for disaster – Joe Pulizzi , founder, Content Marketing Institute Build it and they will come Similar to the movie Field of Dreams, I’ve had someone tell a friend if you create good content then customers will come That’s just not true these days You have to be hyper-focused on distributing to the right people at the right time – John Hall , co-founder, Calendarcom Get more eyes “It’s all about the eyeballs” More is not better And just because someone clicked on your blog post doesn’t mean they are interested or qualified. Focus on content for the right prospects, at the right stage of their buying journey (even if that journey has just begun) – Matt Heinz , president, Heinz Marketing Inc Lower your content output Create less content Don’t create less, just be more deliberate. – Christoph Trappe , chief content officer, Stamats Business Media Act like a reporter Content marketers frequently hear the advice that they should think like journalists We should not take this guidance at face value Here’s the heart of the issue for me: Journalism is objective Marketing is not The ultimate goal of marketing is to create change Having an agenda is part of our purview – Katie Martell , communications consultant, Boston Content Hire great writers Just hire someone who can write well Content creators are not interchangeable and “great writing” does not automatically equal great content Instead, match your writers and their skill sets to the channels in which you are publishing – Anna Hrach , strategist, Convince and Convert Realize perception wins Perception is reality At a previous employer, I was having a discussion about developing authentic content for our audience –suburban moms with 23 kids and SUVs I said in order to create authentic content for moms with small kids, it should be written by moms with small kids – not who was currently writing it (college students without kids, old men, etc) The response I got from a C-suite executive was, “Perception is reality. If the reader perceives it as being authentic, then it is authentic” – Scott Spjut , assistant vice president, social and digital content, Fifth Third Bank Make it legendary Create epic content Epic may drive viral, but helpful drives sales And it’s so much easier to be helpful than epic – Tom Martin , president, Converse Digital Get a third party Podcasting for brands should be handled by third parties where they hire professional organizations to put together their content This is the worst advice I have seen Podcasting is a personal medium – and you have a chance to really connect with your clients It’s best to have someone in your company be the voice of your company – Rob Walch , vice president, podcaster relations, Libsyn Hire an intern You can outsource your content marketing to a college kid – Ruth Carter , evil genius, Carter Law Firm Publish regularly Consistency is everything Consistency is super important, but it is only effective when the content is high quality, otherwise, you’re just consistently boring your audience – Michaela Alexis , LinkedIn speaker, trainer, and co-author of Think Video What’s the worst advice you’ve heard? You’ve heard many of the mantras detailed above Which ones irritate you the most? Are any of them actually good advice? Have a different piece of worst advice to share?
