You know, if the possibility of Summer not only being Salem's final lieutenant, but also possibly the person who accidentally killed the Spring Maiden (and who might also be Gretchen Rainart based on a previous theory mentioned somewhere)...

That's gotta be reaaaaaaally awkward if Summer was ever around Hazel at any point.

i’ve mentioned this before i think (<- i assume by “mentioned somewhere” you mean you read a theory post but can’t remember where in which case, the op was probably me, i’ve been on this train for a while) but:

the official story is that gretchen rainart, after enrolling at beacon academy, “tragically lost her life” on a training mission

per lionheart, the spring maiden was “determined, at first, when she inherited her powers, but the weight of responsibility proved to be too much for the child. she... ran. abandoned her training, everyone. that was over a decade ago.”

per raven: “she was scared when we found her! weak! no matter how much training i put her through, she never learned! she wasn’t cut out for this world! and with those powers, she would’ve been hunted her entire life. what i did—”

(“and which we are you referring to?”)

raven: “that’s why i tried to leave when i did. i’m not afraid, i’m smart.”

raven left taiyang shortly after yang was born. this would be approx. 15-16 years ago as of the beginning of V1. however, her statement that she “tried to leave” suggests that she stayed (reluctantly?) entangled with ozpin’s cause for longer.

eyeballing it, summer left when yang was around five and ruby about three. this would be about 12 years before the start of V1 and 3-4 years after raven broke things off with tai. since raven and summer were obviously still in close contact then, this tracks with the interpretation that leaving tai <> leaving ozpin.

‘more than a decade ago’ is vague but presumably means >10 and <20. so spring running away would have occurred approx. 10-18 years before the start of V1.

hm.

“nice story. but if gretchen’s death taught me anything, it was never to trust you.”

let’s consider the case of the runaway spring maiden. and, more specifically, the assumptions the fandom (myself included) have tended to make.

first assumption: the spring maiden trained in mistral or at haven academy.

no one ever says as much. qrow’s suggestion that the spring maiden was “picked up” by the branwen tribe after she ran away does not, in a world where trans-continental travel is commonplace (and was explicitly safer a decade+ ago than it is now), necessarily imply she ran away from haven. weiss got picked up by the branwen tribe after she ran away from atlas, after all.

likewise, amber’s presence at beacon and, later, fria’s in atlas prime the audience to link the spring maiden to haven. however, both amber and fria were in the academies because they were medically fragile and not expected to live for very long; prior to cinder’s attack, amber was traveling in rural vale, tailed by qrow. it also makes sense, in general, not to keep the living keys to the vaults in the same fortress as the vault they can open.

second assumption: lionheart knew her.

this follows from the assumption that she attended haven, but look at what’s missing from lionheart’s account: he never uses self-referential pronouns. his syntax leaves it ambiguous whether he knew this girl or if he’s simply repeating information he was given.

third assumption: raven’s “we” is the tribe, and she’s talking about finding the spring maiden after the girl ran away.

before V9, this was more plausible, but i don’t think it adds up now that we know raven was still at least notionally aligned with ozpin, via summer, as recently as twelve years ago. in order for “we” to mean the tribe, raven would have had to actually leave (as opposed to “trying to leave”); thus, either summer was conspiring with raven while raven was leading the tribe, or raven met the spring maiden after whatever went down with summer, in which case the third person involved is a complete mystery. the former is possible, but i think the simpler explanation—that this “we” is ozpin’s circle—is more plausible.

especially because what raven says lines up with what lionheart says. except for “she was determined at first,” but even if lionheart did know her, raven was clearly much closer to her and is the type to see through any façade the girl might have put up. (pyrrha was also “determined” but you know that if raven knew her, she would remember how scared pyrrha was. same principle likely applies here.)

fourth assumption: “what i did—” is solely about raven mercy-killing her.

which, it might be.

but if “we” means ozpin’s circle, that would mean raven was training the spring maiden on his behalf—and because it doesn’t really make sense for #3 to be anyone but the spring maiden, we can assume with high confidence that raven had a kindred link with her, ergo she loved the kid like her own family.

the spring maiden “ran away.” gretchen rainart “tragically lost her life on a training mission.” raven “tried to leave.” summer and raven and a third person were involved in a rogue mission to end things once and for all, none of them ever came back, and raven never told anyone what happened.

all of these things happened a bit more than a decade ago.

“what i did—”

i think she’s talking about summer’s last mission. the young spring maiden was overwhelmed, scared, struggling to learn what she needed to learn—and she had a huge target painted on her back because of salem. raven cared about her. if she wasn’t cut out for this world, the one defined by eternal war between ozpin and salem, then maybe the answer is to change the world. end it, once and for all. (sometimes it’s worth it all to risk the fall?) so she conspires with summer to do exactly that.

and then it goes so catastrophically wrong that a) summer joins salem, b) there’s a fight, c) gretchen is mortally wounded, d) raven either mercy-kills her or just can’t save her, and e) raven becomes the spring maiden.

ok.

now. if gretchen was the spring maiden, how do we square the circle of “died on a training mission” vs “ran away”?

in V3, qrow talks about having to search for maidens and in V5, ozpin says that one of the reasons he gave the branwens bird forms was to make it easier for them to search for new maidens when the transference of power was “unclear.” gretchen enrolled at beacon “against her brother’s wishes” and hazel holds ozpin responsible for her death; i think she was the spring maiden before she enrolled, raven identified her, and ozpin recruited her personally.

(if only because unknown maidens are mentioned twice in connection with the branwens and that has yet to pay narrative dividends; and it fits quite nicely.)

it does not go well. gretchen gets more freaked out with every new inkling she’s given of the conspiracy and is under intense pressure not to back out or tell anyone on the outside what’s happening. raven, her mentor/handler, sours more and more on the whole situation and eventually decides she’s not going to be a part of it anymore.

she’s not backing down from the fight. she’s not running away. but she’ll give gretchen a way out and make sure no one else can find her, and if that blows up her relationships with the rest of the inner circle, so be it.

so the spring maiden runs away. “abandons” her training, except raven still knows where she is and is still trying to help her figure out the magic because, well, she’s sort of stuck with it until she dies. gretchen can’t go home yet (salem might find her), but she can lay low and focus on mastering this power to defend herself away from the pressure of being one of ozpin’s guardians.

raven refuses to tell anyone where gretchen is. hazel is getting increasingly frantic; either she’s dropped out of contact or her vague, cryptic messages have him worried. nobody at beacon can give him a clear answer.

several years go by. the situation does not improve. somehow or another summer and raven cook up a plan to Fix Everything by taking salem down. it goes horribly wrong. summer joined salem, gretchen is dead, raven is the one left standing with blood on her hands and magic in her soul, after years of obfuscating where the spring maiden went.

what to do?

tell no one about summer. no one would fucking believe her if she told the truth. refuse to answer questions about her bond to summer, no one will think twice about her doing that because it’s what she did when gretchen went missing, too.

tell hazel gretchen is dead. he deserves to know. what happened, and why it happened, but leaving out summer’s involvement. if she’s vague on how and when—if she makes it sound like she was too cowardly to tell anyone that she, perhaps, let gretchen die (“[you saved yang] once. because that was your rule.” <- qrow really believes this)—or couldn’t save her—she can reveal that gretchen is dead without linking her death too obviously to summer’s disappearance.

if ozpin hears that gretchen is dead from hazel—when the infuriated meltdown rampage happens—then he can quietly tap qrow to confirm (by talking to raven) and restrict who knows the truth; hazel’s explosive grieving anger is easy to spin as hysterical paranoia.

and playing gretchen’s death “close to the chest” is a classic ozpin move. after all, learning that gretchen has been dead the whole time will only sow negativity, and the situation doesn’t materially change very much either way; they’re looking for the spring maiden either way, and everyone is aware that gretchen might die before they find her, so they’re already keeping an eye out for unknowns. qrow knows the truth, but he’s not about to spill the beans to anyone without ozpin’s say so.

and summer’s the one who suggests recruiting hazel to salem, because it’s her fault gretchen is dead but she can at least bring hazel into the fight to tear down the system that led her there. (“you’ve never wondered why she recruited you? you, specifically, to help her find the relics?” <- a narratively interesting line of attack in that it explicitly puts this question in front of the audience, follows up with an unequivocal confirmation that salem sought hazel out very deliberately, and follows that with ozpin’s overtly manipulative and unsatisfying answer of “because hazel is easy to manipulate.” lots of people are easy to manipulate. why choose hazel? how did she even know about Just Some Guy who lost his sister?)

like

all it really requires to tie everything together around the discrepancies is for ozpin (a liar) and raven (a matryoshka doll of secrets she refuses to talk about) to be, er, lying and keeping secrets. and narratively gretchen being the spring maiden just makes sense, to almost the same degree that summer joining salem just makes sense. it’s intuitive. it fills in gaps the narrative quietly circled in V8. it tracks with gretchen being so important in the same volume that makes a huge thing of how no one knows what salem is really after. no more gretchens; so you’ve decided against vengeance for your sister, after all this time?; in pursuit of a new world.

but yeah like. it’s fun because hazel is so malleable and so good at pretzeling his thinking that he could conceivably have been told the truth—summer killed gretchen—and still been talked around to aiming all of his fury and vengeance at ozpin because 1. ozpin is the reason gretchen got pulled into this mess, and 2. gretchen died in the crossfires of a fight that broke out when summer learned the truth (that the war was one-sided paranoia), and 3. for salem and summer the point of this war is to end the paranoid conspiracy so nothing like this can happen again. but my god, the tension between him and summer could probably cut glass.

approaching my tumblr 10 year anniversary next month?! so for fun i browsed through my art tag to categorize what kind of art i’ve posted 🫣 and out of 186 #my art posts:

most of them (41) were original - self portraits, drawing from life, ocs, school stuff, et cetera.

the month with the most posts was january 2016 (11) after watching fullmetal alchemist brotherhood and star wars: the force awakens that winter break. close behind was october 2014 (10), when i attempted inktober for the first time.

i’ve made the most art for percy jackson + heroes of olympus (22) which is fitting given that’s how i got into drawing! by sketching the characters from the books for my friends in middle school.

besides “other fanart” (anything i only ever made 1-2 posts for, 18) the next highest category is avatar the last airbender + legend of korra (sensing a pattern with the formative media here LOL). before 2020, i made only 3 art posts for it and all of it in 2014. after 2020, that number is now 16! #renaissance

next is aristotle and dante discover the secrets of the universe, with 15 posts (!!) clearly i loved that book and wanted to contribute to the small art scene for it.

i’m surprised that h*milton has the same number of posts as m*rvel (catch-all for comics, mcu, agents of shield, and spiderverse) with 10 posts each… sometimes you have to acknowledge your past to move forward 🫡 tbh i think drawing for both at least strengthened my skill in capturing real faces (vs from a book description or an already stylized animated face). that also reminds me, irls came too close to coming to this blog because the musical’s official accounts reposted my art because that was the year i started trying to crosspost to twitter SKSDJSKDK

longest time between posts is 508 days (between jan 14 2022 and jun 6 2023) whoops...

post with the most notes is still my s&seasian atla piece (~46k) and i hope it stays that way <3 i recently rearranged my shelf so I could put up the prints i made of it on display.

i think that’s it, interesting numbers wise. other observations:

overall, i started off posting more traditional stuff by way of sketches in the margins of my school notes or on the blank backsides of worksheets, and also i was in art class at the time. i did post digital art drawn on my tablet, but not as frequently as I now draw/post with my ipad since 2018 (and notably the app procreate since 2020, actually a gamechanger) and a lot more art in full color since too. i wouldn’t mind making more traditional but it’s more time consuming and now i want to post art that’s more finished-looking (quality vs quantity).

did i expect myself to still be posting art on tumblr 10 years later? probably not? i did try posting on twitter and instagram but got cold feet sooo now i’m still here. glad i’m still here! i’m glad i can look at old art with a fondness (though i would prefer no one else scroll or reblog that far back please 😭 just take my word for it that i posted all that PLEASE).

a twitter user by the name of @BBYNAMSEO recently posted a series of tweets alleging abuse and neglect of the idols under Infinite Stage Entertainment. the user posted photo and video evidence of idols being malnourished, exhausted, and covered in dark bruises. the user also included videos of SUGARs Hyejin almost passing out on stage, and S-DIVISIONs Atlas having what appears to be a mental breakdown on stage. these tweets are not the first time that netizens have called out concerning behavior from ISEs idols, but the vitality of these tweets caused ISE to come under international scrutiny, with even non-fans calling for an internal investigation into the treatment of the employees.

in the wake of these alarming allegations, ISE CEO Cho Hosung issued a video statement on the company site as well as their official social media accounts, in which he vehemently denies any irresponsible or negligent behavior from ISE employees. he insists that ISE has always prioritized the health and happiness of their idols, and that the success of their idols is built on a foundation of support and care between them and the company. he insisted that ISE is a family company at heart, and he cares for all of the idols in his company like a parent would.

however, Hosung seemingly avoided any specific allegations that the original twitter thread pointed out, including his own comments seemingly sexualizing ISE idol Hyejin. he also did not comment on the statements from alleged ex-employees.

what are your thoughts?

Obviously, you're anonymous so I can't really stalk your ao3 account and binge your other works, but I love abo, especially in the ATLA fandom and was wondering about what else you've written and if you'd be willing to share some of it.

Hello! Thank you for reading Hearts on the Mend and sending me a nice message! I’m glad you’ve enjoyed it so far! Hopefully I’ll manage a chapter again soon, but I’ve had a bit of a dry spell with writing, so I couldn’t put a date to it.

That being said, if you’d like to read any of my other fanfics, I actually have them linked in my pinned post on this tumblr account. There’s only three of them, including Mend, but they’re all omegaverse, so perhaps you’ll like them!

The first is How to Seduce Your Husband, another zukka fic but this one has Zuko as an Omega and Sokka as the Alpha. They meet at a fancy party meant to be used as a faux mate hunt and end up together before they even know one another. When I first started writing it, I was inspired by Behind the War Worn Mask by zeerogue, which is another arranged marriage Zukka fic, as well as When in Fódlan by PumpkinSpiceHimbo, a Fire Emblem Three Houses omegaverse Claurenz short story.

Just the idea of meeting someone you’re fated to be with, and having to cover your face at first and hide your true self… it just inspired me! But as it stands, How to isn’t finished either lmao whoops

The third fic I’ve written (and still isn’t finished) is different from Mend or How to. I must preface this by saying this one is not for everyone. It’s called Heaven Sent/Hellbent and it’s not a Zukka fic. Instead, it’s a Piandao/Zuko omegaverse story.

In HS/H Piandao is forced to marry Zuko basically right after Zuko gets burned by Ozai, and Piandao is like “fuck that” and basically makes it his life’s goal to keep Zuko as his ward. After Aang appears and takes down Ozai, Piandao officially annuls their sham of a marriage and Zuko becomes the next Fire Lord. This fic jumps between the past, when Zuko is living with Piandao as his ward, and the present, when Zuko is several years into being the Fire Lord and is now being pressured to produce an heir to the throne.

As you can see, it’s got some crazy things going on, but I did fuck around with the age gap in that one. Piandao actually doesn’t have an official age in the Avatar universe, we just know that canonically he’s the youngest of the white lotus members, so I changed things around a bit. But there’s no underage sex in the fic and the characters don’t get romantically involved until Zuko is in his mid 20s so… take that as you will. Again, it’s not a fic for everyone and I won’t be upset if you’re like “ew, no.”

Anyway, these are the three current writing projects I’ve got going so far. I do hope you enjoy them, whether it’s just the one or all of them! I like writing but it’s difficult trying to stay afloat in this capitalist hellscape and manage my free time otherwise. But knowing there’s still people out there who like my stories enough to send me little notes and questions always makes me smile :)

hi, i was just wondering, when things are released and it's from "avatar studios," where is it actually from? like, is there a website, instagram account, etc. that is accessible to everyone?

In terms of official accounts Avatar Studios is technically what the official ATLA and Korra accounts are, they just don't seem to have been updated yet to be more focused on the upcoming Avatar Studios content. At the moment obviously because it is still over 2 years away, but the expectation would be that those accounts become the Avatar Studios accounts, that is where they will post official trailers, news and info.

Basically once more info starts to come out about the 2025 movie and other projects, we will likely see those accounts evolve to be more important sources of news and perhaps we will also see new Avatar Studios specific information. I assume an Avatar website, which has been needed for years, will be part of this.

Okay! Here we go. I am going to regret this, probably, seeing as most people who post about this get hate. But I think it’s important that indigenous voices aren’t buried.

Disclaimer: DO NOT take this as an excuse to harass Ian Ousley or any of the other actors! This situation is bigger than one actor who may or may not even be aware of this and who was a minor when he auditioned for the part. Harassing actors for the choices of the studio is reprehensible and is never acceptable. PERIOD.

This also doesn’t mean you can’t watch or support the show. This is simply in the interest of dispelling misinformation surrounding this topic.

So let’s dive in.

Claim: Ian Ousley claims to be from a tribe called The Southern Cherokee Nation of Kentucky.

TRUE.

Ousley and his family members have posted about SCNK, and he even has close family members on the board.

Claim: Ousley’s acting resume claims he can play every ethnicity, with no regard for whether he is actually from those groups.

TRUE.

Claim: Ousley’s tribe SCNK is only being picked on for being federally unrecognized.

FALSE.

Plenty of legitimate tribes are not recognized by the federal government. This is not the reason SCNK has been accused of being a fake tribe.

Claim: SCNK is recognized at the state level - making them legitimate!

FALSE.

Although the SCNK has claimed to be state recognized, this is not true. The state of Kentucky does not offer state recognition.

Here is a list of all state-recognized tribes in the United States. Kentucky is not even listed.

The SCNK’s false claims of state recognition is one of the reasons they’ve been accused of being illegitimate.

Claim: It’s only “Twitter detectives” making these claims, and therefore no one should take them seriously.

FALSE.

The allegations did not only come from the Twitter account 7GenVoices. Although this Twitter account—who claims to be run by multiple indigenous people—brought the controversy to wider attention, they are not the only ones to have made claims against the SCNK’s legitimacy.

In fact, every single federally recognized Cherokee Nation has been making these claims and raising the alarm since long before this particular casting controversy even existed.

Here is an article from The Cherokee Phoenix: the official newspaper of the Cherokee Nation.

Let’s look into the allegations within.

The Cherokee Phoenix Newspaper reports that Ian Ousley's tribe has been "decried as false by the three recognized Cherokee governments".

Ousley’s claimed membership is with the “Southern Cherokee Nation of Kentucky,” one of dozens of federally unacknowledged tribes decried as false by the three recognized Cherokee governments.

It is possible that the ATLA production took the word of Ousley’s management at face value, or was satisfied with membership claimed in a tribe not federally recognized. It also seems CN [Cherokee Nation] resources were not consulted.  

This corroborates what 7GenVoices posted: that the Cherokee Nations were not consulted and that they did not have Ousley listed as a member.

Many offices within the CN can quickly verify whether a person has citizenship, and one department in particular can advise the entertainment industry.

“With the exception of the Cherokee Phoenix inquiring, the Cherokee Nation Film Office has not been contacted in regards to Mr. Ousley,” said Jennifer Loren, director of the CNFO and Original Content. “He is not registered with CNFO and is not included in any of our directories, which are readily available for citizens of any federally recognized tribe to enroll in.”

Claim: SCNK is a fake tribe made to siphon resources from indigenous people.

So is the SCNK a fake tribe? What does that even mean?

Thank you to u/KelpieCat for their comprehensible and accessible breakdown, despite the hate they got on Reddit for their post. I will be drawing from this post because of how clearly they laid it out.

There are three federally recognised Cherokee tribes: the Cherokee Nation, the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians, and the United Keetowah Band of Cherokee Indians.

Ian is not enrolled with any of these. Instead, he is a member of the Southern Cherokee Nation of Kentucky. The three recognized Cherokee governments have said that this group is fake .

What traits do these fake tribes have in common, and what damage do they do to Cherokee sovereignty? According to Travis Snell writing for the Cherokee Phoenix:

Sometimes people take illegal or unethical steps to form "tribes" and sell membership. Some claim treaty rights and seek state and federal recognition, while others take federal money intended for legitimate Indian nations. A group of Cherokee Nation employees and officials recently formed a task force to deal with these "wannabe" Cherokees.

There is in fact a task force that represents the Cherokee Nations and investigates “pretendians”: people who fake Cherokee heritage or tribal status.

And even though their task force has no official name, it does have an agenda.  

Why is exposing fakers so important?

"It looks at protecting our sovereignty," Allen said. "We have so many individuals and groups who are using the Cherokee name and a lot of times it's in a manner that is very inappropriate. They scam people. They charge for genealogy. They charge for DNA tests that might suggest that people could be Indian. In essence, we are looking at groups that claim to be Cherokee but have no real status and who are just distorting the culture and history."

Wannabes scam people, schools and government officials, or come together to establish tribes seeking rights.  

Even if someone has indigenous heritage, that doesn’t mean they’re automatically Cherokee. Indigenous people are not a monolith, and it’s wrong to take resources set aside to help Cherokee tribes.

"We don't deny that there are individuals out there who might have Indian heritage, but coming together as a group doesn't make them a tribe," Allen said. "They are creating an identity that is absolutely false." … "I don't think anyone (on the task force) has an objection to someone having a Cherokee heritage club and not trying to be a tribe or nation," Rhoades said. "A large part of our objection comes from when you pretend to be an Indian tribe or nation and lay claims to treaties you have no right to. That's just wrong."  

So are fake tribes even a real problem? Yes.

Rhoades said there are more than 200 bogus Cherokee tribes. … Task force members said wannabe groups asking for federal recognition are the reasons why it takes so long for legitimate tribes to go through the recognition process.

The SCNK shows the hallmarks of the fake Cherokee tribes, such as:

Shady DNA Practices

The SCNK accept DNA test evidence as proof of Cherokee citizenship. Sounds foolproof, right?

Not so fast! It’s actually currently impossible for DNA evidence to link a person to a specific Native American tribe. And due to DNA testing companies having limited data on indigenous/Native American/Indian American people, they may even give a false positive OR false negative.

The SCNK themselves admit this but say:

"DNA test results cannot prove which Native Tribe you descend from, however, we will not discriminate against any positive Native American test result, and will promptly accept you as a Tribes-person so that you can join with us in our celebration and appreciation of our heritage."

In other words, it is not necessary to prove you are Cherokee at all to be given membership in this tribe as long as you take a DNA test and are willing to pay a membership fee. You can read more from Indigenous authors about how damaging it is to Cherokee sovereignty to use DNA tests for claims of Cherokee membership [here] and [here].

This means you may have zero Cherokee DNA, or even zero indigenous DNA and just get a blip of unrecognized DNA that gets lumped in as being indigenous, and the SCNK will accept you as Cherokee. Even if you have lived your whole life unaware, privileged, and with none of the disadvantages that the Cherokee people have had to live with, and the whole reason why resources are set aside to help them.

There are even shady companies that will give out questionable DNA results which legitimate DNA companies cannot corroborate.

SCNK doesn’t care. They will still label you as Cherokee as long as you pay.

They even outright state they will offer Cherokee membership to someone WITH ZERO INDIGENOUS DNA.

Don’t forget! These people survived genocide, systemic abuse, and continue to face poverty, violence, and injustice in the criminal justice system.

Ever get so upset you make a Tumblr account to vent?

I haven’t even listened to The Penumbra Podcast yet but it’s on my list because it’s insanely popular and the cosplays I’ve seen are hot as hell (A+ to all the cosplayers I’ve seen you’ve done great work). Now, with the recent news surrounding the podcast, I’ll wait till it’s done if I ever do get into it. I’m Asian and part of the LGBT community but I’m not nonbinary so I can’t say much about the trans represention in the art but I wanted to add my two cents on the matter as a person of color and someone examining the situation from the outside. Also, before I get deeply into it, I’m not the only person of color with opinions on this matter so if people have their own frustrations and criticism with the racism in The Penumbra Podcast and/or the new artist they hired, definitely listen to them too. These are my own personal opinions, and I’m sure other people will disagree and that’s fine. We’re all going to have different views on this so bear that in mind. Also, feel free to correct me or add anything if I���ve missed some information. Here’s a great breakdown of the whole situation for those that don’t know what happened. Finally, I was very hesitant to post this, but I felt it was important because I make a statement at the end on how race should be presented in a podcast format so if you are interested in making a podcast and want to have a diverse range of characters, please skip to the end to read those thoughts.

I’ll start off by saying, I’m not even that upset with the new artist that The Penumbra Podcast hired. I know that statement alone is controversial but I don't personally know them, and I’m not going to judge who they are as a person by a few pieces of art they’ve made. They are the least of the problems that I have here. Since the announcement and the backlash, I’ve been scrolling through the artist’s Instagram account and I can tell why people find the designs offensive, but I’m also comparing the designs to the artist’s other work, and I honestly believe that’s just their style. They’ve exaggerated the features of just about every character they’ve made, regardless of race or gender. From what I’ve seen the sharp angles and overly round curves in the anatomy that make some of the character’s features more jarring are how they prefer to draw. I’m sure they’re capable of drawing more realistic proportions but for the most part they’re art aims to call attention, be bold, and create distinguished features. Not inherently a bad thing on its own.

And yeah I’d understand the issue if this were a scenario where the artist heard how these characters acted in the podcast and thought “hey, obviously this character is a black woman because they are super strong and therefore must have big muscles, no other woman could look like that” or “hey, this character has to be Asian because they act super seductive sometimes better draw them as such.” But from my understanding the race was already decided by previous official artists and a general description of the characters were already generated by the audience, similar to how The Magnus Archives leaned towards drawing scrawny Jon with black, greying hair and dark skin. The new artists couldn’t really change those features even if those features aren’t described in canon because a depiction that strayed too far from popular fandom interpretation would make the character’s unrecognizable to the fanbase. 

I think the reason this became such a big issue for most people is because the new Penumbra artist used their exaggerated art style when making these characters and people of color and nonbinary folks already see themselves drawn as these exaggerated caricatures all the time (with those images being used to further discriminate against them). I’m sure the artist didn’t mean for their art to be offensive, but that of course doesn’t change how it was received. 

According to some, the poses and expressions the artists chose did not fully represent the characters entirely and only served to further perpetuate harmful stereotypes, and I’ll have to take their word for it because I still haven’t listened to the podcast so I have no idea how the characters act. But again much of the criticism is based on the one line-up and doing a deeper dive into the artist’s work I managed to find artwork that was much less offensive. Here some art where Vespa is depicted in a non-violent pose and one where Vespa is in a threatening pose but not an overly violent one. Here is Peter drawn in a non-seductive pose. Hopefully, the artist truly does keep the criticisms in mind as they work on the new official art. I’m just not the type of person that wants to get the pitchforks out and cause this particular person to lose a job they seemed really excited about over their old character line-up, especially when that person is also part of a marginalized group.

Again, that’s just my opinion on that particular artist. Those who are offended by their art are still valid in how they feel, and the artist should absolutely take their criticism to heart to better how they represent the characters.

What I’m more upset about is that I think The Penumbra Podcast should never have released official art for their characters in the first place and that’s their mistake that they refuse to own up about. They have made it clear that the story was never meant to portray characters of colors, a fact emphasized by the fact they hired mostly white actors from the start. They only started releasing art of the characters to get a profit. And the thing is they know what they did was wrong. All I had to do was search Penumbra Podcast racism and there is a note on their website saying that they archived some old official art.

“We have discontinued all Penumbra merchandise that uses the original character designs, and in the meantime, any profits on the sales of that merchandise will go to the For The Gworls project. We also realize that the depiction of these characters as POC, while not appropriate for us to use in our marketing and merchandise, has nonetheless become personally meaningful to many POC listeners. For that reason, and because we do not wish to distance ourselves from our mistake, we are keeping these images on our website for archival purposes. Though we do want to make it clear that many of the main/featured voice actors are white and that we did not write the characters to represent any specific POC experience, you are, as always, free to imagine these characters in any way that you like.”

I went to their shop and they still sell posters and pins with the character’s faces on them, but they are donating it to a good cause so hopefully that stays the same. However, I still find it a little uncomfortable that they are still selling character merch and have plans to continue selling character merch. They have no right to dissuade the fans that already found representation in the characters, but they also have no right to profit off the representation that was built, regardless if they made the story. 

Let’s compare this to another piece of popular media. I love Avatar the Last Airbender and, I liked the ATLA voice actors just fine but there should have been more people of color doing voice acting behind the screen too. The voice actors for that show were mainly white too, however, the creators knew that they would be making poc characters. That’s what makes the difference. Did they still choose to go with mostly white voice actors? Yes. Could they have done better and pay more people of color? Also yes. But I’m not as furious at them because they did their research on the cultures they were basing the ATLA world off of and intentionally gave us a show where Asians could see characters that looked like them represented on the screen. The Penumbra Podcast did not do any of that. Again, they openly admitted that it was never their intention to make the character’s people of color when they made the podcast so that goes to show no research was made to properly represent specific cultures. The color of the character’s skin in their official designs therefore became more of aesthetic choice rather than representation, and it wasn’t even their aesthetic choice to begin with!

Race isn’t a color you can just throw onto the character because you feel like it. So I want this to be a lesson to anyone that wants to make a podcast: if you want to include poc characters please do some research into the cultures you plan to represent the way you would with any other form of media. Just because the audience can’t see the characters and just because it’s harder to smoothly introduce the character’s appearance doesn’t mean you’re allowed to be lazy on how you present the characters. Do research before you start writing the first episode and take the time to hire poc actors. Hiring poc actors is actually the least that can be done to show representation. Also, since the audience cannot visually see the race of the characters on a podcast and it can’t typically be described the way you would in a book, you’ll have to be creative. It’s not my job to say how, but my suggestions would be, before the fans come up with their own image of the character, you need to establish race in the first few episodes or release character profiles on a website so that the fans know you canonically intended the characters to be of a certain race even if you aren’t able to mention it in the actual podcast. If you are unwilling to do any of these then the best route is to avoid stating race at all and allow the audience to build their own representation into your form of media. However, once this happens, you are not allowed to profit off popular fan interpretations. You lose all rights to create official art or images of the characters. You cannot use “we have a diverse cast of characters” when you market your story. It doesn’t matter whether you created the content or not, you did not create the representation for those minority groups.

It’s one thing for fans to build their own inclusivity into a form of art like a podcast, but it’s another thing for the creators who never worked to make the representation happen to take advantage of the representation that the listeners built for themselves. Thank you for attending my TedTalk.

No, I doubt that it would parallel the fandom's reaction (you have no way of predicting what the General Audience sentiment is going to be by that point anyway, and loud fanatics upset about it are not the majority) because they're not writing the story to parallel the fandom's reaction. So I would strike that out because it doesn't matter. (It's not a relevant assumption because if you're writing a reactionary story to your perceived most-unreasonable fandom member you're not writing much of a story in the first place, and I can't see evidence of conscious story decisions motivated by that in the first place, victim complex of aggrieved fans aside).

I doubt that by the time things are resolved with Ozlem and the brother gods that it would even be a question that really gets explored. If Cinder gets a full redemption arc the integration to the community that's going to matter is with the main cast and whatever transformational good she's capable of is going to be what's remembered.

Recall that the Fall of Beacon was chosen to be intensely and personally characterised morally through Jaune's dispute with Cinder. It wasn't a horde of civilians trying to track her down. At most it made it such that she had to remain undercover whilst the heroes believed her dead and throughout the Fall of Atlas. Cinder's changed relationship to the community is going to be realised by her as the Fall Maiden, not as being held accountable to... abstract hatred? Or war crime tribunals? That's not this sort of story. Even once Ironwood had gone 'too far' he could've walked it back, that's why Winter tries to reach out to him one last time. This isn't a punitive story, it's very mythic.

So no I doubt Jaune is going to be hated for... showing compassion and mercy? I have no idea how that at large could be construed as something he could possibly be hated for? He's only going to be challenged on it insofar as the heroes who are acquainted with Cinder as an adversary are concerned, that's why I addressed your question in such a way because that's what is immediately relevant to the character development and how a very personal conflict is solved (also, Joan's heresy is expressed as so by the church... aka other Huntsmen/Huntresses). I'm not saying civilians don't matter (they do) and the greater public doesn't matter (they do), because they go to pains to establish that protecting civilians are priority... but not on an emotional character drama level, the major change is going to be Cinder going from explicitly hurting/killing civilians to protecting civilians.

Of course it depends whether any of their story is publically known and what the 'official' story is. At that point you've got the interaction between the story about stories and... the story about stories about stories. How Cinder goes from the architect of the Fall of Beacon to the Fall Maiden who helps the heroes might be subject to folkloric simplification... maybe no one ever knows who helped her or maybe it's mythically described and we know the intimate truth. Now you're talking about how stories circulate. I think that given the fact we go from the secret lost fable no one ever knows to Ruby announcing the truth of Salem's existence across the world via Maiden-aloft satellite then maybe there's some mythmaking there to be explored.

I mean, if anything... compassion and mercy that helps save the world sounds like... a rather good story... if that's an act that gets circulated as something that turns the tide... whether it is at all. Joan of Arc is celebrated for who she was and what she did. I don't think Jaune will literally be martyred or turned into a saint, but I'm not expecting social ostracisation.

Don't think of it in a cynical way. Think of it as a story.

These have gotta be some of the dumbest takes on this website. The fact that someone actually compared 9/11 to Trump formerly being president is fucking insane. They’re too busy whining about fake fascism to not give a fuck about a national tragedy and equate it to someone being in charge whom they personally did not like. I’d love to see these terminally online weirdos discuss Biden and his communistic regime becoming an actual national threat, but that would require them to actually give a shit about America, huh. Jesus what the fuck. 9/11 is one of the most catastrophic national tragedies in many of our lifetimes, if not US history. I’m not above some dark humor or jokes about things like 9/11 but I still have some reverence for the fact that so many people died in a way that we are still feeling the fallout from.

My parents and people around their age could tell you where they were and what they were doing at the exact moment that they saw the live broadcast of 9/11. This event sent shockwaves through the US for a reason. Even seeing the footage and firsthand accounts are difficult.

People using a tragedy or responding to it with authoritarianism doesn’t make it irrelevant or worthy of some kind of scorn in and of itself.

Like, yeah, a lot of us don’t remember it firsthand. But that doesn’t make it less of a tragedy or a horrific terrorist attack. And yeah it led to some seriously asinine shit like the Patriot Act but we’ve basically all agreed that that was one of the biggest blunders of the Bush administration. And the Iraq war was started by Bush certainly, but it was continued by Obama who was just as much of a warhawk and it only started to decline under Trump when his administration began planning for a strategic removal of troops from the area.

And on the ATLA stuff. I’m a huge fan of the show, and I’ve seen it upwards of a dozen times because I just get obsessed with media and I have to say that comparison is absolutely nonsense.

The show takes deliberate inspiration from Japanese imperialism but also makes sure to give it a broad enough message and theme that it could apply to other things as well. To say it’s implicitly about the US and the Iraq war is ridiculous.

And to compare an event that deliberately and suddenly killed thousands to Trump’s election or administration or the mismanagement and authoritarianism of officials during the Covid19 outbreak is insane. And then to accuse the republicans of “descending into fascism” while these same people advocated for medical mandates and fucking concentration camps just last year. I don’t think they lack awareness I think they’re so wrapped up in their own bullshit to realize that their lies are only working on themselves.

RWBY/Black Panther outline

So a few years ago I wrote up a possible outline for Black Panther and RWBY crossover but I never really went anywhere with it so it’s just been sitting in my notes for years now. Since I’m not going to do anything with it, I figure I’d post it here for someone else to take and create their own story if they so choose.

The information is taken from various writers and runs of the character.

General Facts

Wakanda has NEVER been conquered

It's main resource is Vibranium

Also has Dust deposit

Though does not mine it

Due to Vibranium has made leaps in technological to the point of discovering space travel

The Black Panther, while passed down through the royal line along with the title of King, is challenged once a year by any Wakandan

The Tribal Council (Known as the Taifa Ngao) is the council of all thirteen tribes of Wakanda who help the king with polices

Education is highly valued in the Wakandan culture and was viewed as a fundamental building block to incient Wakandans. The nation has one of the highest literacy rates on the planets. They have an eleven year free, compulsory cycle of primary and secondary education. At the end of this the citizens of Wakanda have the choice in the future of their career path. Many go on to attend one of their free Universities. The citizens also have other options such as farming and mining and other such laboring professions

The nation is very xenophobic to the other Kingdoms, mainly due to the intolerance that has spread since the war between the Faunus and Humans

95% of Wakandans are Faunus of various animals

Every major city is named after a former King/Black Panther

Wakanda has a universal public health system paid largely from taxation. Wakanda's entire population has equal access to health care services. The nation has one of the highest life expectancy rates on the planet.

The king is protected by his own personal bodyguards the Dora Milaje, skilled female warriors who have dedicated their lives to the Black Panther

They have their own intelligence agency known as P.R.I.D.E. (Princess Regent Intelligence Division Executives)

Foreign Policies

While Wakanda is xenophobic to the rest of the world they do not ignore what goes on outside their boarders. They have access to the CCT such as the other Kingdoms since they built their own tower years before Atlas did and is capable of reaching all around the world if needed. But their relationships vary between other Kingdoms.

Vale

Wakanda has no qualms with the Kingdom of Vale, however they do hold the belief that the Kingdom is too lax, not facing the dangers of the world

Ozpin has met with T'Chaka, T'cahlla and Tanka's father when he first became the Black Panther. Ozpin made a good impression on him which led to Wakanda beginning to grow out of it's boarders and slowly start to reach out to the outside world

An expedition to Wakanda with professor Evert Ross and Doctor Oobleck of Beacon academy yielded a productive relationship, with the two learning a great deal of Wakandan culture as well as earning a look inside the kingdom.

Vacuo

It's furthest neighbor, they see the Kingdom of Vacuo as a warning, since they as well had access to copious amounts of minerals and destroyed their lands mining for them. However it's debated whether this has made the people of Vacuo strong since they can survive in such harsh conditions, or merely foolish for letting it happen in the first place.

Vacuo had once tried to take over Wakanda but this failed miserably, since then it has for the most part respected the nation's borders.

Atlas

Atlas and Wakanda have the worst relationship out of all the Kingdoms, Atlas has tried a number of times to force their way into Wakanda and has failed every time. This is due to Atlas' ideals of protecting everyone and while Wakandans understand the reasoning they do not trust another Kingdom that believes it can act as the entire world's police without any of the people it rules over actually in the kingdom.

The SDC also has a bad relationship with Wakanda, mainly with the current CEO Jacques Schnee and his discrimination against the Faunus. But also due to his greed, and his desire for Vibranium.

The only official who has garnered any respect from Wakanda's Kings is General Ironwood, who at the start of his career asked Wakanda to officially welcome it to the other Kingdoms with a peace summit in Mantel. History

Wakanda was founded thousands of years ago by a small tribe living on the continent currently known as Anima. At that time a gigantic meteorite crashed into the ground fairly close to the village, upon investigating the site of the impact they discovered a mound that rivaled a mountain sticking out from the ground. They discovered that the entire meteorite was composed of a metal that was virtually indestructible, explaining how the impact from the impact hadn't caused worse damage.

The chief of the tribe decreed that the mound was theirs since it fell on their land and decide to keep it to themselves. Years pass and settlers from Mantel arrive caliming the land is there, however the Wakandans hold their ground and defeat their attackers with weapons more advanced than their attackers. They leave one man alive and tell him to send a message, that any who try to invade Wakanda will be dealt with in the same manner, after this victory the chief is pronounced as the King of Wakanda, and taking the title of the Black Panther, on account of his faunus traits and pelt of a black panther which he wore into battle.

The first Black Panther, Bashenga, had only one son and heir to the throne Azzuri. He ruled during the time of the great war and met the king of Vale when he asked the King of Wakanda to join Vale and Vacuo in the war against Mantel and Minstrel to end the slavery of faunus as well as the dampening of expression. Azzuri said that while he would oppose the two Kingdoms against Vale he would not lead his people to a war they didn't ask for. But he would allow Vale and Vacuo to pass through Wakanda since they morally opposed Minstrel and Mantle's polices against Faunus kind.

During the Great War Wakanda was faced with constant battle from Mantel and Minstrel but remained victorious throughout until the war ended. When it came to a close, the King of Vale offered Azzuri to join him in forming five kingdoms and divide the world up between them. However, knowing that they could not open Wakanda's technology to the rest of the world he declined and instead requested that his nation be recognized as it's own sovereign Kingdom.

The world then enjoyed a time of peace, during which Azzuri passed his mantel down to his oldest son T'Chaka. His second oldest S'Yan served at his brother's side dutifully until their father passed away from old age.

Soon, T'Chaka had his own son, T'Challa, however his queen passed away at her son's birth, never to know the son she gave her life for. But T'chaka found love again with his second wife Ramonda, who gave them his second son Taka and then becoming pregnant with their first daughter Shuri.

It was during this time that the king was invited to a peace summit in Vytal, giving Wakanda the chance to be recognized as a Kingdom on par with the others and finding a compromise between the other Kingdoms. T'Chaka accepted the invation and took his family with him to the summit. However while at the Summit, T'Chaka was attacked by an assassin known as Klaw, the attack resculted with Taka being mortally wounded and T'Chaka being killed.

Ramonda took her children back to Wakanda, Taka being kept alive by the best of the kingdom's medical technology while S'Yan took the mantle of Black Panther.

Taka made a miraculous recovery, and awoke to find a black panther cub had found it's way into his room.
