Hi all! I'm here to show off another model!

This one was a little passion project that didn't really start until I realised I needed to complete a group of locomotives.

The London & North Eastern Railway's class A4s were the East Coasts most premier express locomotives. There are many models of this locomotive available across many gauges. In N gauge there is the old Minitrix model and the newer Dapol ones. In O gauge there are kits or the new ready to run Hattons model, in partnership with Heljan. And in OO gauge there is the older Bachmann model, the constant re-releasing Hornby Super Detail models and the Hornby Railroad model.

For what it is, the Hornby Railroad model is very good in quality. While the plastic moulding and the finish of the model makes it look very matt and bland, with the cheaper printed details not helping its case, the model is very well detailed, even with its moulded handrails and lack of features like lamp irons. Surprisingly, the model has brass fittings. Both the chime whistle in front the chimney and the safety valves embedded in the cab roof are turned brass, and stand out against the matt finish.

The reasoning behind wanted an A4 is because, within being on an Eastern Region kick, I have a Peppercorn A1 and A2, an A3 and to complete the group I wanted an A4. Luckily a mate of mine was selling a job lot to Rails of Sheffield with a Railroad Mallard and spare A4 body included. I offered a better price for it all, and that same day I got the models. My mate had previously modified the locomotive to have the Super Detail A4 valve gear, which did make the model look better. However, the A4 wasn't going to stay in "as purchased" condition for much longer.

Not long after I got home, after buying the models, I grabbed the spare body and attempted my plan of action. I cut the valances off of the spare body, using the inside of the bodyshell as a guide of where to cut, I scored a couple times down the valances before bending them out, making it easier to remove as the plastic on the Railroad models is softer than most models.

Because the cutting of the spare body worked out so well, I decided that I'd swap the bodies over and use the spare one on the final model. However one issue I faced with the spare body was the lack of chimney. Now that the original body was now spare, I removed the chimney off that body to put onto the spare one.

Other things that were changed to the body was the removal of the moulded handrails, addition of new ones using short handrail knobs and 0.45mm brass wire, and fixing any small mistakes on the valances with a file.

While I was detailing up the body the thought of "which A4 do I model" was crossing my mind. A lot of my Eastern Fleet worked all over the LNER. My A2, No.60538 'Velocity' has many pictures and videos of it working around York and Newcastle. The A3 I own is of No.60103 'Flying Scotsman' which worked all over the network in its lifetime. A lot of the smaller Eastern engines I own worked around Scotland or the South East. So when picking an A4 to model, it would be a preference to a name and which one was in similar condition to Mallard. In the end this was thrown out of the window.

Time for a little bit of Fake History!

The London and North Eastern Railway A4 locomotives are one of the most famous British Pacifics built. Its distinctive Streamlined casing of the 1930s giving a look of style and speed.

The original four A4s were nicknamed the silver batch because the names contained the word silver. Later batches would be named after birds but would later be renamed after famous and distinctive people. Originally the A4s were only going to have 35 members, however upon request from Kings Cross, a 36th member of the class was built on the 5th August 1938 and went around nameless until a name was decided.

4904 (the J39 doesn't exist) was sent to King's Cross as the last member of the A4s, fitted with a double chimney, as standard of the later batches, painted in LNER Garter Blue. The men at Kings Cross were allowed to choose the name, and after a number of months at Top Shed, it was requested for its name to be Thunder, a striking name for the last member of the class.

However the nameplates would never be fitted. In 1939, a year after the locomotive's construction, the Second World War broke out, and like other members of the class, 4904 was painted in a plain matt black, but didn't receive the NE lettering showing its home routes and allocations. Because of this, the locomotive was nicknamed "the Black Shadow" or "Eastern Ghost". 4904 roamed the network and managed to go to places such as Crewe, Birmingham and even Exeter during the war, making the engine become some sort of urban legend. The legend was enhanced when LNER 4469 'Sir Ralph Wedgewood', previously known as 'Gadwall', was blown up at York Sheds on the 28th April 1942. What started out as a nickname, 'Eastern Ghost' became a myth. Many workers mistook 4904 as 4469's ghost, while it went about its work at night.

When the war ended on the 2nd September 1945, 4904 was in a sorry condition. Two months previous the locomotive's axle boxes ran hot and were in desperate need of replacement, alongside this, the conjugated valve gear, which was built to be regularly maintained, was becoming worn due to a lack of maintenance. 4904 was the first A4 to be overhauled post war because of these factors. The axle boxes were striped and scrapped, new ones were casted and refitted. Parts of the valve gear that were salvageable from 4469 were used, but most of the rods were recast from new.

Finally on the 24th December 1945, 4904 emerged from Doncaster works. It was renumbered to No.35 and Finally received its nameplates, painted in a striking red. There were debates for the engine to take 4469's name of 'Sir Ralph Wedgewood' but another A4 was given the name (No.4466, later No.6, and later again to No.60006).

The locomotive throughout the rest of its life was Numbered 60035 and bounced about the East Coast performing duties on many of the named trains around the areas he was based at.

Having a majority of the locomitive's fake history written up, and out of boredom at the time, Thunder was painted I'm Wartime Black with the numbers painted on by hand with a toothpick in white. After this I realised I kinda copied the Sir Nigel Gresley 60007 trusts idea due to SNG currently wearing Wartime Black.

Thunder stayed in this condition for some time, I didn't have the nameplates or paint, so he sat in Black until they were ordered and arrived. Not long after arrival of the paints and plates, the locomotive was painted, lined, numbered and crested and was finally bestowed its name. Very fitting as it loosely followed his fake history.

Thunder, like Ryan, is a jewel in my fleet, sleek, shiny and unique. This project took me just over a month to do, and proves that, with minor modifications, that the Railroad Models can be bought cheap and made to look as good as the Super Detail Models available for double to price.

I sent over a PDF low rez file consisting of 16 images that I thought were what was required for a portfolio to show the work style that I do, work I like to do and what supports my field of work.

Some images I wasn’t sure about including, but did anyway. This was to give me an idea of what works and what doesn’t. ie, if I receive feedback on particular images that could answer my fears of the image etc.

Some images I held back on sending completely as I thought they may not be relevant or may confuse my style.

The illustrator’s that are my favourite are Holly Hatam, Clover Robin and Natalie Merheb.

The work I most admire are possibly from Holly Hatam as the textures of backgrounds display great detail. I was inspired by Holly to try paper collage for my previous book which I enjoyed combining with my digital characters.

I have recently been inspired by helen_po_art found on Instagram for her latest few images consisting of brown outlines for her character designs.

I particularly enjoy drawing children, expressions and various outfits. There is something quite satisfying with bringing the emotions and excitement out in a child within a story. I like to draw animals, but the cute talking type, not so much the realistic animal drawing. I also enjoy drawing leaves, flowers, houses, furniture and household objects.

I think what I dislike drawing the most is cars and other vehicles, towns and city scape. I much prefer a colourful, and relaxed scene to draw and read about than a busy town.

I guess I find hands difficult to draw, it usually takes a lot of mistakes before I allow an image to be completed and even then, I’m never really 100% happy with it.

The process I enjoy most is line drawing characters with digital colour application where I can apply a pattern or texture, such as a print on a dress. I also like to combine media with paper even if it is only small parts to make up the completed image which creates natural shadow.

So there have been emails sent between Emma and I which have helped gain a bigger picture of the way I work and where I require advice to improve.

Emma sent me a very informative email which contained my portfolio review in depth along with some helpful links for other artists in the children’s book field all of which are completely relevant to me.

Here are some of the critiques for my portfolio:

I like your little girl (floppy hat) character, she has a nice face! It would be nice to see her from different angles though and with some different facial expressions though - expressing how a character is feeling and their reactions is really important. I would re-visit the sitting down pose, her legs look a bit disconnected! Look up some ref pics of children sitting down and see what you can do. Same with hands and feet - They are hard! But try not to avoid them or miss off fingers or toes. You can feet more easily (just draw shoes!) but you can't have characters hiding their hands in gloves or sleeves, so just do some hand drawing exercises (there's loads online a quick google away or on YouTube) and get practising :) Your other characters are expressing more which is great to see.

Have you seen Lauren Child's work, she made the 'Charlie and Lola' books.

https://images.app.goo.gl/2BgVfBzB5r2AX2U86 I think she'd be a useful artist for you to look at. Her colours are 'flat', but she uses pattern and collage. And she uses outlines on the characters, but she also carries those outlines across into the background too, which makes the piece more cohesive as a whole, rather than - collaged background, and then outlined characters on top in a very different style. I think trying to have a more cohesive feel in your work would be good. Either making your characters also out of collage, or adding some line details also onto the background like Lauren Child does. You've done this on the bin which works well. Just make sure that the colours of the collage aren't taking over the character and vice versa, it just helps to work as a whole.

Should I apply my logo to each page? No, I don't this it's necessary. And to honest, showing your physicaly portfolio is very rare these days. It's mostly all done online with some low rez jpegs attached and a link to your website in the covering email for the rest :) Also - I would maybe consider that you don't need a logo as an illustrator necessarily. Perhaps just a 'Cover image' for your portfolio front page instead, perhaps the girl with the floppy hat standing up holding the spade. I have considered creating a concertina style portfolio to present, do you think that this idea would work for my style? Keep it simple, A4 or A3 portfolio prints in a clean portfolio is fine. And as I say, degree shows place importance on physical portfolios, but it is very rare that I ever show my work in person printed out nowadays. Your website, and having a social media presence, is the most important thing. (don't have to have loads of followers! Just accounts with sensible usernames (avoid underscores))

How did you continue to produce work after graduation? You keep going!I worked part time while I built up my work. There are briefs you can do that can give you a focus, such as book illustration competitions like ones you might have done in University.

Hi hope u dont mind me asking but how do you prepare for debates (as i what worl do you do do you have any special rituals etc etc) and how do you structure your speeches? Sorry im just curious...

Hey! Sorry it took me a day to answer, but I really wanted to think about it first =) Also, i never mind asks, especially debate, send them my way anytime and i’ll love you for it =D

But it’s going to be long, so I’m putting it under a cut

Before I start answering, a couple of points: 1. I mostly judge nowadays so these things don’t happen as often as they did, 2. I started in 2014, so not very experienced here, 3. I was never a really good debater, so take my advice with a grain of salt

1. preparing differs on what i’m actually doing, so 2 main options:

a) tournaments - I only do BP, which means I don’t know any topics in advance and we get 15min to prep before speeches. I’m adding something I got from Tuna, because I never knew how to use up the 15 minutes efficiently, and this really helped me and my first partner.

Now I know a bit more, so this is not as helpful as it was in the start, so now I follow this scheme: “2min: brainstorm (while looking for the room), 3min: share ideas, 9min: develop, 1min: decide who gets which arguments (this only if we’re first tables)” then I organise my speech and do everything else during the debate. I do think about what the other side might say and vaguely decide on how to negate, but i always run out of time, so this mostly happens during the debate. 

I’m always the second speaker and I prefer second tables - I think i would make a good PM speaker, but I usually still go second on first tables, because I like clearing up what my 1st speaker meant. 

Structure wise I strongly believe in negation first, arguments later, BUT if i’, half way into my speech and still on negation, I drop that and focus on my constructive.

I love doing whip speeches, so if you want any advice on that, I can give it, but in a nutshell - if your extension is not super clear, you get to decide what it was, and then you need to spin it in a way that makes it seem like your partner already talked about all of this (they might’ve done, but you need to do it in more detail). what i always heard about those speeches is that you need to do a biased summary, but what i think you actually need to do is you need to sell your first speaker as the best thing in the room, possibly world. 

During the debate: I ALWAYS have an a4 sheet of paper for talking to my partner - be it comments, negation ideas or jokes, but it helps (mostly because i don’t like to poi, so if i write something down, my partner might) - I write in all caps here, because my handwriting is beyond bad and the point of this is the other person should be able to read it

As a judge: i read the motion and think about both sides a bit, but i mostly go into the debate without any clear ideas of what i would do.

b) public debates:

Here I know the motion in advance and we usually have like 2 practice debates, where we find arguments, then it’s just a matter of making them good - this might be more like the highschool format - we actually sometimes even use that one.

 I’m always the PM because I get nervous and you can pratise PM speech the most. I like to draw out my speech on an a3 sheet of paper with as many colours as possible (i’m going to try and find something and post it so you see). Because i practiced my speech I mostly just write down some words, but i write sentences and phrases I liked and would love to use in the debate.

I also think of a good opening. if i can’t, i ask someone else. the opening matters.

As a ritual: this only applies to public debates, but I listen to either “Lose Yourself” or “My Shot” for like an hour/2 on repear before the debate - depends if I’m alone i do eminem and if I’m with my debaters, then i do my shot, because everyone loves hamilton and debaters mostly have confused feelings on eminem, and let’s be real it’s pretty much the same song (re: the feeling it gives you). I also do make-up for public debates (just foundation, mascara, and red lipstick) which i don’t really do otherwise, so it gives me a bit of a shield from the audience? idk, i never understood it, i just know my speech goes a lot more smoothly if i wear make-up (fuck choice feminism, but sometimes it works you know…)

Interim Show

Over the course of the Interim degree show, I have been through a process of setting up the show, engaging in certain tasks during the show and then receiving and observing feedback given back to us from the show. 

Setting up 

Posters

As part of the setting up process, one of the tasks I engaged in was putting up the posters around the university. I assisted my team partner Sam Walker in setting out to print off the posters so we could prepare to place them around the university. One Initial problem we faced with this was that we originally printed off the posters in A4, however, this ended up filling the whole page, leaving no borders. We realised that this did not really work as the white border seemed preferred and made the poster more appealing. 

Later we adjusted this problem by going back and appropriately sorted the properties for the Image so that the poster is A4 in size and has a small white border. 

Before we placed the posters around the university, we printed off several A3 and A4 copies. The different sizes would be used depending on the location, if we felt the location was a good spot for the poster to be noticed then we would use a larger A3 poster as it would be more eye-grabbing. 

Later me, Sam and Jesse went around the University to place the posters (Seen above). We explored multiple areas where students who study all courses are likely to gather. Places that we realised would gain a lot of traction were places such as the Canteen, the Pierson study building, students union and various hall ways that get a lot of student traffic. We thought very carefully about the placement of the posters in these locations, thinking whether the location seemed necessary to have an A3 or A4 poster depending on the popularity of it. Then we thought about things such as whether it stood out or if it was that noticeable at eye level. 

 In the end, I think it was hard to say whether our posters and their placement had any kind of Impact on the turn out of the degree show. However, I’d like to think that to a certain extent it did help some what. I felt like an area of this process we could Improve on for the final show are things like being earlier with getting our posters out there. I felt that to some degree the reason why our posters may have not been as entirely as effective could be due to us only placing the posters around the university a week prior to the show. This could have meant that people didn’t really have enough time to really catch notice of our posters and realise the show was happening. 

Another think I believe we could have worked on for the poster advertising could be better planning of where to place them. I felt that going around the University and observing potential hot spots worked well. However, for the final degree show, we will have to think of places that expand outside the university as the degree show will be taking place somewhere elsewhere. 

Business Card Holders/ creating bios/placing bios

Another task I engaged in for the setting up of the Interim show was producing everyone’s biography. For this task, Lacey from our class produced the bio layouts online in Photoshop. Once completed a few of us went to the Illustration room to help mount the bio’s onto foam boards so that they could be placed next to everyone’s photo frame.

When we took the bios to the Illustration room my job was to use an adhesive spray to allow the bios to stick securely to the foam boards. This involved spraying quick layer over the sheet and then making sure it was properly aired before I placed it on the board. 

Once the bios were on the boards the next task was to cut them down into equal squares. For this task, I assisted and used a ruler to accurately measure the length and height and then cut them down using a scalpel. We were very careful in this situation to make sure the precautions were taken when using a scalpel so that we did not accidentally cut ourselves. 

Once completed the bios were then ready to put into place. In doing this, however, we did fall into one problem. When I sprayed the first bio I accidentally made a mistake, which was that I had sprayed the bio in such a way that left a squiggly mark. Unfortunately, this mark did not disappear and was quite noticeable which resulted in the bio having to be re-made.  I quickly learnt from this by reattempting the process which came out fine.��

As part of our showcase for the Interim show we also had these neat card holders to hold our business cards. The holders were placed just below our bios so were easily noticeable for people coming into to view the show to see.

When I placed my cards in there I could only around half my business cards (about 50), which left me with 50 or so remaining cards. I think for the final show this had made me realise that I may need to be prepared to think of other ways to distribute my cards to present all 100 of them, or I shall have to make sure I refill them if on the off chance that many people take my cards (or they go missing). 

Feedback form

As part of our preparation for the show, we had also created feedback forms for the show, as well as a feedback box with a similar style/theme to place the forms in once people had filled it out. 

The feedback forms were created by Colbert and Amy who were a group in our class who was in charge of creating these. I was pleased with the array of questions such as if people found our content Interesting and their favourite pieces, etc. However, I feel like for the final show the questions could perhaps be better fleshed out so that we could gain some more specific feedback. One Idea I had was to have an ‘own thoughts’ sections so people can freely express any specific concerns or praise they’d like to address. 

One other thing I wasn’t hugely fond of was the poor cut out quality of the feedback forms, the forms appeared to be cut out lopsided and inaccurately. This was disappointing as I felt that it had shown a lack of commitment to the role and could allow people writing the feedback to think a similar thing. A similar problem remained with the feedback box which also seemed to be poorly produced as it was simply a PG Tips box with paper masked over it but was still visible through the paper. 

My chosen photo’s for frames + Showreel & frame layout

Just above is a layout of the show as designed by Lacey and Lauren in our class. The layout shows the Cotswold gallery along with the names of the person, the mac they are using to show their work and whether their frame will be portrait or landscape. Each box represents where the persons work, bios and business cards will be placed for the Interim Show. 

I found the layout to be very useful Information from Lacey and Lauren as it really helped simplify where everyone will be and what mac they will be on to avoid any kind of confusion.

Here is my layout for our Frames. Our frames are targeted to show what we believe to be some of our best photographic Images that we have taken. You have the choice to show one or several Images depending on your preference. In my case, I decided that I would like to show several of my Images as a means to showcase a selection of my work. Initially, I spent a fair amount of time simply rearranging my layout for the Images. This was difficult as I felt I wanted to show a select range of themes/subjects in my photo’s and not one consistent series of photos. The trouble here was trying to select what I felt were some of my best to display. 

In the end, I went with the Images that can be seen above. due to limited space, I laid them out in a bit of an obscure way. Admittedly once I had mounted my work I was hugely fond of the layout choice. The reason being is that for one, the layout was a bit obscure and didn’t look as good as I had hoped. Secondly, I don't think the photo’s I selected were the best choice due to the colour coordination of the Images. I feel that there is too much red and blue present in the frame which doesn’t work tool well when paired up with the bottom right Image which is a different colour scheme entirely. I think for the final degree show I would like it if all my Images were a different colour entirely so they all contrast helping them to stand out. 

Lastly, I had received some feedback from one of the technicians mentioning a mistake I had made in my frame. This was that I had not taken into consideration the border of my Image layouts of Photoshop in comparison to the frame itself. As a result, most of my Images touched the border of the frame and were slightly cut off. 

As for my showreel, I compiled a selection of what I believe to be my best work currently. this work will range from anything that I have worked on in previous modules for the whole time I have been on the course. I decided to use adobe premiere to create a montage of my work, this work will contain a series of animated video, live actions footage, photography and various other bits of miscellaneous things.

 My approach was to showcase my photography first through short intervals with a quick fade in/out for each Image. I would then show any video related Items after. For this showreel I wanted there to be a pleasant atmosphere so I used an upbeat backing track I found online as some background noise. The point of this was to keep the viewers of my work entertained whilst watching.

I felt that I could have perhaps better approached my show reel in some ways, however. For example, I would have liked it if I had Included some fancier transitions to better show my work. Also looking back at it I think I would have preferred it if I had timed my music accordingly to what was being shown. This would change the dynamic and pace depending on the work. This is something I will aim to Improve for the final degree show.

During the show

Moving on to the actual degree show, we as a class each had a certain level of responsibility to keep when it came to maintaining the show. One of these tasks Involved turning on the macs in the morning and then turning off the macs in the evening. 

In our Creative Media chat, we were using this as a means of communicating with each other about turning the macs on and off. I mentioned that on this particular day that I would sort out turning the macs on as I was going in. Whilst I was happy to turn the Macs on, I felt that many people did not participate in helping out with this yet it was everyone’s responsibility to do so. 

Originally I believe an Idea was thrown around of creating a schedule that would Involve everyone and it would give them a time and date to rather turn the macs on or off. However, this Idea did not materialise and the macs were occasionally left on overnight and then not turned on in the morning. I felt this shows poor lack of effort and is something that can not be ignored for the final show.

Feedback forms

Pictured below are all the feedback forms from the Interim show. We received a lot of feedback which I found some of it to be useful and some of it to be a bit descriptive. Non the less I still found the Information provided to be great in terms of reflection for the overall Interim show. 

The overall score for the Interim averaged at around 4/5, we had three 3/5′s, six 4/5′s and five 5/5′s in total, which I do not find to be too bad of a score. I feel like that for the final degree show a 10/10 score may prove more valid to get a more specific scoring. 

Looking at the next question ‘what was your favourite piece/pieces?’, we received a range of feed back from that, some people stated certain pieces that they enjoyed such as Nathan Aston’s framed Images and Nathan Rees’ animated Stranger Things animated sequence. Some people even mentioned one of my Images for my frame, this being the Wooden Mannequin Image, which I was pleased to see, this feedback may actually decide whether I would like to continue to use this in the future. for the final degree show.  

The next question states ‘did you like how the work displayed?’, with a simple ‘yes’ or ‘no’ tick box. Looking at the feedback forms everybody that answered said ‘yes’ which again is pleasing to see as it shows that our presentation was up to scratch. For the final project, I think we could expand on this question by asking something along the lines of “If you said ‘yes’ please state what about how the show was presented you liked?”.

The next question asks ‘Based on the work seen, would you hire any of the students’. Out of the 13 feedback forms, 12 ticked the yes box and 1 person said ’maybe’, which is still very good feedback to see. “To develop on this question for the future we could ask “If so, who in particular would you hire?”. 

And lastly, the final question stated ‘Is there anything you would change about this exhibition for next time?’. Quite a few people failed to answer this question and some gave in-descriptive answers, however, some did reply quite Informatively. One of the most in-depth answers said that the frames/branding was overall good. However, the show reels need to be more consistent and need more Information along with them. On top of this, he said some of the show reel content is fabulous and some of it was not too good and was put together poorly/too quick. 

Taking this Information in I think it is safe to say that some show reels were likely poor due to being rushed, Myself Included. But looking back at my show reel, it is definitely an area I will be looking to Improve a lot for the final degree show. 

Overall I was pleased with the feedback. I thin to Improve the whole feedback process we need to make sure that Pens are always provided as one small problem we had was that we offered no pens at first as we had forgotten to distribute them. Aside from this, for the next show, I think we can think more carefully about what we would like to ask to get the most in-depth answers for the most critical feedback. 

Email from lecturer 

As further feedback, we had an e-mail from our lecturer Helen to give us feedback from a creative Digital media graduate Sophie, who came to view our Interim show. One downfall we were Instantly met with was the failure to turn on the Mac’s, which was a problem I had mentioned before. This was disappointing to here as I felt it had shown our lack of commitment and engagement with the show. 

Moving on, however, it turns out that Sophie was Impressed with the level of quality of the branding and was overall generally pleased with the outcome. Sophie had picked up on a few of our short coming’s however, pointing out things such as the red bio which was due to one of the student’s doing their own print of their bio which resulted in some colour distortion. Also one of the frames having a narrow white border which we had not noticed. Some other feedback that was given was smaller things such as a typo on Colbert’s business card and that some business card holders need refilling.

Overall in terms of feedback, I am pleased. I almost expected the feedback to be a bit more critical than it turned out to be, yet most of it was generally positive. 

In conclusion for the Interim show as a whole, I think there is definitely a lot to work on for the final degree show. I believe that we as a class have made some smaller mistakes that are easy to make but we must avoid for the final show. And then we have made some large mistakes that need urgently sorting out to make sure that we get the best outcome for our final show. These big mistakes being things such as making sure the macs are turned on and off so that our content can be viewed. Other things Include making sure pens are available to we can receive feedback, and lastly the quality of certain things, myself Included need to be up to standard. If we are given a certain job, we must do it well for the benefit of the rest of the class or we will bring everyone else down as well. 

I think these problems can all be averted so long as everyone efficiently pulls their weight. A big problem with this show is that I felt some people were doing more work than others and some people were left with a load of people’s jobs when it was not necessary.
