The Kissimmee River Restoration:
In the 1947, After vigorous flooding to outlying communities in Orlando and Kissimmee, residents demanded channelization and flood control measures be enacted, so the Army Corp of Engineers crafted a solution: a 103 mile long, 30 foot deep channelized canal of the Kissimmee River directly into Lake Okeechobee contained by massive adjacent berms. The flood control measures worked relatively well upstream however before the project even finished Floridians noticed an environmental catastrophy down river; a 90% loss in bird populations, heavy nitrogen and phosphorus loading, and destruction of important fish habitat.
So by the 1970s, congressional intervention funded scientists to start planning how to fix it. The end result was an economic split between the South Florida water management district and the Army Corp of engineers to split the cost of restoration project 50/50. In the 1990s the work of burying old channel (in certain segments) and the restoration of 43 miles of riverway and a 3 mile wide flood plain began (visible in the image below).
What I'm going to show you is my access to the ecological progress of the completed filling of the of the C-38 channel.
Visible in the satellite imagery from Google we can see the meandering channel of the historic Kissimmee riverway adjacent to a wide canal system and dam, up until 2 years ago most water flowed through the canal rather than the river. The natural canal functioned as a sort of oxbow lake surrounded by cow pasture. The Corp and the SFWMD sought to create a massive wetland floodplain habitat by filling the channel and restoring flow where it had once was gone. To do so they needed also needed to remove the lock/dam. The channel was filled with the adjacent berms, no new fill was required in these sections. The dam (first image) was a large water control system with a mining access road above it. As you can see below, the process of filling it left a lot of bare ground, there was no planting strategy prepared for the loose soils instead it was left to flood when the remaining channel was filled.
Here is the that dam and road today:
All that remains is an elevated mound which houses a deep aquifer well monitor and plants as far as the eye can see. Plant life took over immediately after flow restoration, I mentioned before no new plantings were done in these section (new plantings were only established in "cuts" across the old channel to prevent erosion) so all plants are spontaneous. Spontaneous vegetation includes both introduced and native species, our guides stated that their primary concern was providing bird and fish habitat, pesticide regimes are used to control some problematic invasives (how else can you manage 20,000 acres). You have to understand the image below is only 2 years of growth in an area which was previously debris and cow pasture, the water management district is delighted to see such a fast recovery of any kind.
So what happened to the cow pasture?
With floodplain restored, much of the habitat is being converted into an emergent wetland, which will be flooded around 6-9 months out of the year. This caused the death of much of the recent dryland species which faltered under the loss of their Terra-firma conditions. On the plus side this is providing bald cypress with beneficial growing conditions
All together the Kissimmee River restoration is no small feat and far from a complete restoration. The multi-billion dollar project is necessary to bring back an ecosystem on the verge of total collapse but also to reduce nutrient loading into Lake Okeechobee, as an experimental ground for other river restoration projects. This is by no means a complete restoration, much of the river is still channelized to protect local towns (and Orlando). Instead the restoration of flow is meant to provide beneficial habitat combined with storm water control.
Is this project a success? Who can say so far, all I know now is the beautiful sound of birds chirping in the morning air while floating in a vast wetland seemed like the beginning of something better.

Chapter 29
âComing!â hurriedly, Hoseok ran to the front door and heâs welcomed by the stack of boxes in someoneâs arm. And that someoneâs arm happened to be Seul. He pressed his lips together while taking the view in front of him with questionable gaze âwow, someone is planning to move in today?â Seul leaned her body against the wall to stabilize herself.
âJung Hoseok you better make way for me if you donât have any intention to help!â her faint hollered was muffled behind the stack of boxes.
Hoseok snapped out of his daze and quickly apologized before lending his hand to help the small girl. âWhat are these Seul? Why are you carrying all of these by yourself?â
âPresent from Armys. I claimed it from the management officeâ he lifted the first box from the pile, groaning at its weight as he carried it inside. Not even half of the burden were lifted off from her and it really annoyed Seul to the core.
âUnbelievable! Are you really going to take one box fromâŠugh.. Goodness, you are impossible Hobi!â she nagged. Seul struggled out of her converse and entered the place carefully. When she thought sheâd been careful enough, her knees buckled due to the extreme loads which did not match her size.
Seul blamed Hoseok for leaving her with the remaining boxes and chose to pick only one from the piles. Ungrateful Sunshine! She mentally groaned in dissatisfaction. Easing the boxes down on the ground carefully, Seul made sure her lower body could withstand the weight for few more minutes.
Her movements grew sloppy and uncoordinated âOuffâŠâ without warning, she screeched loudly garnering everyoneâs attention. Seul stumbled forward and crashed on top of pile of boxes. To make it sounded humiliating, her face was buried inside one of the boxes and she had to literally hold her breath from sniffing the goodie bags inside.
âSeul?â âSeul what happen!â âSeul-seul are you okay?!â heavy footsteps could be heard from every corner. It seemed like everyone was in rush to the crime scene. A hand reached out to her arms, pulling her from inside the box and examining her body to find scratches on her skin.
Jin patted her cheeks, looking frantic âDid you get hurt anywhere?â finding herself breathless due to the small accident, she finally expelled a soft sigh along with small chuckle.
âSorry. I am okay, I didnât mean to worry-Yah Kim Seokjinâ she was pulled into Jinâs warm embrace baffling everyone in the room. The members were snickering sarcastically, judging dramatic Jin throwing shades on him.
She palmed his chest, pushing the latter away from her body to create some space for both of them to breathe. âArenât you being a little too dramatic?â Jin shot her a disapproval look and trailed her gaze to the rest of the members who had their usual bitch-hands-off-her look across their face.
He knocked the top of her head with his knuckle â Yah Kim Seokjin? Where is your Jin Oppa? Arenât you being too informal? â her nose scrunched up in disgust and turned to others seeking for morale support. Namjoon opened his arm welcoming Seul in his embrace. He grinned widely until the dimple appeared. She rushed to his arms, as Namjoon enfolded his long arms around her earning low protest from the floor.
âSince when you are so touchy with Seul?â said the maknae bitterly.
Jimin shook his head frantically âI cant.. handle more competition. Donât fall for hyunggie Seul-ah!â he snorted with his whiny voice. She refused to entertain the whiny baby and sealed her mouth until then. The more she showed her response, the longer she had to watch these boys irrelevant mouth fight.
Namjoon paid no attention to others and rubbed her arms urging Seul to come with him to his room âWhere are you bringing her?!â Jin shouted from the living room watching their body slowly disappeared from his vicinity. Yoongi rolled his eyes, escaping the commotion to his room.
 -------------------
Seul spent two hours in Namjoonâs room watching English shows though she barely survived throughout the shows, Namjoon was kind and patient enough to translate some difficult terms for her. Hoseok and Jimin would come to check on them every five minutes until the couple had enough and decided to lock the door.
The first 10 minutes, Jin pounded on the door like a mad man demanding the leader to return Seul back to them or else they would call help to open the door. The guys seemed to have so much time in hand today that they chose to pick on Namjoon and Seul instead of minding their own business.
After wasting his energy in persuading Namjoon and Seul unlocking the door, Kim Seokjin gave up and finally they could find some peace.
Nibbling on her chips halfway, she dropped the remaining on her lap as she pointed at the screen with a soft gasp â Is it even ethical to kill someone and get away from it?!â Namjoon chuckled softly and hummed a soft yes.
âThis is so fucked up!â Seul threw her arms in the air and rubbed her pounding head. He flicked his eyes up and down before his left brows shot up in either surprise or disapproval of  Seulâs choice of words âLanguage. You have been spending too much time with Yoongi hyungâ flicking her forehead lightly, the girl pouted in protest.
Namjoonâs forehead creased into a frown â It is called âHow To Get Away With Murderâ for this reason duh. The title itself already give away the idea of the story. You are being a drama queenâ she curled up beside him and brought her attention back to the television screen.
âI know, but it doesnât make any sense. If I were Wisse Gribbins, I would tell the police and leave his friends to deal with their own problemâ
âIt is Wes Gibbins. You sounded so Koreanâ he corrected and let out an amused laugh. She smacked his forehead softly, scowling in disapproval âThe last time I checked, I am Korean, Rap Monster-ssiâ he cringed at the way how she called him by his stage name. It was his first time to hear it from Seul and for some reason it created a huge gap in between those words. Unfriendly, yes that was it.
âThat sounds even horrible. Just stick with Namjoon. Rap Monster-ssi doesnât fit youâ he glared down at her and ran his fingers in her hair out of habit.
âBut, I meant to ask something⊠Just your view, tell me honestly alright? I have been thinking to change my stage nameâ he bit his lower lips as if in deep thought.
The corner of her lips pursed up as she nodded âTo what? Joonie? O-ri?â he scoffed.
âJoonie is too cute! Stop bringing up O-ri, I am so over my Hiphop Monster figurine which resembles a duck, ugh now I have to live with thatâ
Seul tilted her head, thinking deeply before responding â Jji-Mon! (RipMon)â clasping her hand together, her eyes twinkled in happiness as if she just won the big prize of the night.
Namjoon stared at her blankly trying to brain Seulâs words. He regained back his ability to talk not long after.
âWhat in the world? How did you know about that! It was long time ago, and I thought you werenât a fan Seul. Or are you secretly my fan since start but you got to hide it because you are too shy to admit it?â he drew his own conclusion annoyed the hell out of her.
Sneering sarcastically, she poked his forehead returning Namjoon to his original position as he had moved a little too close to her âI saw the concept trailer, whereby you and Jimin had to rip off your shirt. You really are a true god of destruction; how could you rip it off at once when Jiminâs shirt was looking fine after the deed, unlike you. Tsk, Rap Monster-ssiâ she teased.
âThat was wardrobe malfunction. Stop using that against me. I wonât ask your opinion for my stage name anymore, you are a true Army, what do I expect? You will make me use those funny nicknamesâ
âHey! I am not your Army. And those nicknames arenât that bad. I found it is entertainingâ he chuckled lightly.
âAlright you are not my Army. However, you are our girl. So, letâs get back to our main topic, shall we? About my stage name. I am thinking of making it official. Instead of using Rap Monster, I want to use RM. What do you think about it?â
Seul beamed âRM sounds professional and cool!â
âAnd, Rap Monster sounded unprofessional?â he scratched his head.
âI didnât say that. Rap Monster is good but now that you are moving forward and become bigger, I think RM suits you better though I prefer Namjoon over anything, no offence. But, Rap Monster sounds too teenager-ish to me. I like RM. I am sure Armys will love it tooâ she patted his head with light giggle.
He chortled âTeenager-ish. That makes sense. I am no longer the Rap Monster who wrote childish lyrics, I wish to be better and thorough in producing music. Do you think Armys will be okay with RM?â he expressed his concern. In all honesty, Namjoon did not want to screw things up especially when it involved Armys. Every decision that heâs about to make, he would put Armys in his thought.
âJoon, your fans will love it. Remember they love you just as much as you love them. Trust them. You are worrying too much. Shall we just use Jji-Mon instead?â
âAbsolutely no. You are not in charge in thisâ he pinched her nose, frowning at her small tease.
They jumped in surprised as a loud banging at the door drew their attention momentarily âKim Namjoon! Ji Seul! Open the goddamn door now or I swear to god I will break it down in 10 seconds!â. Kim Seokjin was screaming at the top of his lungs threatening them once again.
Springing up, she smoothed back her tousled hair and rose from her feet âI will tame the whiny lioness, stop worrying over the stage name. Let Armys know how you feel, it will make you feel betterâ
âThank you Seul..I will think about itâ a slow smile worked its way across his face. Namjoon knew exactly what he felt right now. And, he made up his mind about the stage name.
âKim to the Namjoon! Return Seul safely now!â he pounded loudly.
âUgh Jin is so annoying. Give it a thought alright?â she winked as she hurriedly went to open the door âComing! You can stop pounding the door now Jinnie!â Seul hollered in response to Jinâs wrath.
 ---------------------
The next day Seul arrived at the boysâ place to work a little later as she had to accompany Mrs Hwang for routine check-up. She went straight to tend her job as soon as she sent her mother back safely. Upon her arrival, the place was empty. They must be out somewhere or most probably at the company practicing for their next tour. In few days they will be leaving Korea and this time itâd be Wings Tour Japan Edition.
In the middle of preparation for their tour, the boys had started going in and out from the studio for their upcoming comeback which was expected to be in September. The second half of 2017 had already drained fifty percent of their energy. Hence, the thought of surviving the rest of the year until their comeback was torturing them.
Seul walked along the hallway, picking up dirty laundry in process while humming to some random songs. She stopped halfway in front of Yoongiâs private study room or more like his mini studio. He had one at the company as well as in their dorm. Yoongi would use either one of his genius lab depending on his mood. However, most of important and private stuffs would be secured in his main genius lab. The one that he had at home was a casual thing, he didnât really put passwords to the door.
There was a small voice coming from the room, and out of curiosity she pushed the door slowly scanning the room in hope to find familiar faces like Min PD. Smiling to herself, she was over the moon to see Yoongi in his seat engrossed in his work. He didnât even notice her presence there.
She took the chance to enter the room stealthily just to scare him a little. Chewing on her lower lips, she stifled her giggle settling the dirty laundry outside. Seul crept into Sugaâs Genius Lab, shutting the door behind her silently. She stood behind him waiting to jump out or to creep up, startling him.
Seul chose the second options to appear more daring. It was Suga not Jungkook. This guy deserved a little scare just to tame him. To put it off this way made it sounded so wrong. She shook her head to get rid of the weird thought and getting ready to execute her so called guerrilla attack.
Before she could make a move, Yoongi swivelled his chair around facing the girl. Seul gawked in bafflement, giving Yoongi upper hand to pull her into his lap. âGot youâ his low voice sounded awfully deep today, and it almost made Seul losing her shits.
âWhat are yo-â she struggled to stand up but Yoongi tightened the grip around her torso, running his thumb in circular motion along her waist line.
âI miss youâ he murmured.
She softened in his hold. âI miss you tooâ she encircled her arm around his neck. Seul looked startle by her own action but drawn as he inched close to her face. It was only a matter of time before their lips reunited again. Yoongi brushed his lips against her, holding her cheek in his hand drawing her closer.
He kissed her gently, cradling the back of her head, relishing the feel of her soft hair and delicate bones. Their lips moved in the same rhythm, ravishing each other lips. She stroked his chest, allowing the latter to push his tongue inside dominating this battle.
To be frank, she never expected kissing Min Yoongi would be this hot and it triggered her desire to feel more of it. He roamed his hand around her body, feeling every inch of her covered skin adding the fuel in their already heated moment. Aching for more, they pulled away from the kisses panting for clean air and before she could regain her normal breathing completely, Seul let out a small moan in his earlobe.
She clung to him, emitting a low groan as he sucked on the tender area at the base of her neck. Her voice encouraged him to explore her body further. Yoongiâs temperature rose and he went to kiss her again with so much passion. This time Seul responded to the kisses as passionate as his.
Carefully, he ran his hand to her buttocks switching her position. She straddled him on the seat, her knees on either side of his legs, wrapping herself deliciously close to his body. His fingers fiddle with the button of her blouse, when she made no move to stop him, he took the chance to unbutton them halfway down enough to reveal her chest.
Yoongi breathed softly against her lips and nuzzled her face. Their gaze met as they communicated silently with a single stare that they exchanged. Chewing her lower lips, Yoongi kissed her briefly before running his lips along her jaws. He slipped her hand under her blouse, feeling her tender skin against his hand.
Seulâs body went rigid with surprised as trembled shook her body. The euphoric warmth blossomed within her once more when she felt his hand caressing her chest inching close beneath her cleavage. His lips returned to ravage her neck knowing what it did to her. She arched towards him, holding back the moan in her throat. He nipped at her neck slowly getting harder and more insistent as time passed.
Her hand clutched onto his shoulder for support, as her free hand ran freely in his brown lock. Yoongiâs action rendered her breathless. She unconsciously moved a little creating small friction against the dangerous zone. It was supposed to be untouchable, yet as soon as she heard Yoongi deep groan. She knew she had done something inappropriate to it.
âDarn it Seulâ he nibbled on her earlobe as he picked up the confuse girl, making his way to the couch behind them. He laid her down and found himself on top of her. Yoongi was not rushing into doing anything intimate with her, in fact he had been monitoring her response. If she didnât push him away, meaning he got her permission. Up to this stage, Seul showed no sign of protest.
She slid her hands under his shirt, signalling him to take it off. His breath hitched at the sight of eager Seul beneath him making Yoongi wanted to take her right way. She took a moment to stare at his body without blinking. Seul pictured the image of shirtless Yoongi in her head, admiring his fine body that matched the perfectly milky skin. Yoongi looked effortlessly beautiful without his shirt on.
âYou seem impressed baby girlâ said Yoongi teasingly.
Her cheeks reddened realizing that sheâd been taken a long time to admire the fine man on top of her. However, when Yoongi lips captured her once again in another long and endearing kiss, it washed off all the shyness in her.
She closed her eyes and felt the passion swelling in her. He broke the kisses and looked into her eyes âBaby, tell me when to stopâ she was moved by his soft side. Despite in this situation Yoongi put her feelings above his raging hormone.
Nodding with a smile, Seul pulled his neck down and made the first move. She kissed him on the lips, using a little tongue before trailing the kisses to his neck. She knew what was she doing causing the older guy to emit a long moan while his hand gripping her hip.
Chills bumps across her body as Yoongi pressed against her, as he pinned one of her hands abover her head. He interlaced their hand together and he kissed his way down to her chest. Â Reaching her back, he unclasped the fabric that had been hiding the beauties in front of him. Seeing Yoongiâs lustful stare, she blushed madly and threw one of her arms to cover the twins from his prying eyes.
Their eyes locked, as he removed her hand uncovering the two beauties. He breathed sharply and mumbled âYou are beautiful baby girl. Too beautifulâ she anticipated what heâs about to next. She chewed her lips nervously but soon the feeling was taken over by one of the greatest pleasure in her whole life. One at a time, he just kept on and on kissing and sucking on them turning Seul into a moaning mess.
Arching her back, she pushed her chest forward letting him to have them, giving into the pleasure that he gave her willingly. While heâs working on pleasuring her, he unbuttoned the remaining button of her blouse and slipped it off her.
Yoongi held both sides of her abdomen as he moved down, pushing her legs apart. Watching her hesitation, he took the cue to trail his kiss back to her stomach, kissing it all over. He was so gentle with her, every kiss that he showered were made of love.
âYoongsâŠwhere is everyoneâ she bit her tongue from expelling another loud moan.
Stroking her hips deeply, Yoongi kissed her inner thigh playfully and mumbled against her skin âOut. They wonât be back until tonightâ kissing and licking her, he teased her into a frenzy. Seul grabbed the sheets tight, grunting sexily which drove Yoongi mad.
The couple continue undressing each other skilfully.
Clothes scattered on the floor leaving her with only thin fabric covering her most fragile area and so did Yoongi. He glances at her once again seeking for permission. A faint blush crept up her cheeks, and that was enough to convince him that sheâs alright with this level of intimacy.
She exhaled as if to steady her nerves when he finally freed her and continued to shower kisses there, earning a deep grunt from Seul. One of her hands was locking his hair, Yoongi worked his way in between with passion.
âYoongi..â her breath hitched. Seul was reaching her peak and he knew it, just how he intended it to be. Still not stopping, he kept on with his skilful tongue. Her body tense up as she exhaled a deep breath feeling the ecstasy from his sinful tongue love making.
The sensation from his warm tongue drove her insane.
Only soft and erotic groans could be heard across the room. Just how much they longed for each other this way? They were drowned in a sea of lust and love.
 ------------------
Sitting in between Yoongiâs legs, he snuggled her closer to his body. âI want you to listen to this song. It is a demo for our new albumâ her eyes gleamed in excitement. âIs it alright to let me listen to it? I mean I am not a BTS memberâ she mumbled confusedly.
âNo, it is alright. It is just a rough version of the song. We havenât confirmed anything yetâ Yoongi chuckled softly as he reached out the ipod on the glass table and adjusted the headphones over her ears.
âReady? Tell me what do you think of it alright?â Seul nodded with a thumb up. His thumb glided over the screen, and the first strain of a smooth alternative hip hop with a light touch of jazz echoed through the headphones. She found herself enjoying the soft beat as her head tilted by its own to right and left in response.
There was not much lyric in it since they may need to come up with new changes now and then. However, she could catch small lines that they already included in the song. It was poetic and catchy.
All of my wonder Youâre the answer I call you her, her Cause youâre my tear, tear
Yoong ran his thumb along the side of her waist anticipating Seulâs reaction. He had been working the songs with Namjoon and Hoseok, though the leader had already come up with the full lyrics of the outro, he still had to make sure the beat matched the lyric perfectly.
When the song ended, Seul removed the headphones and turned her head facing the handsome rapper. âThat was beyond amazing Yoongi!â she grinned, planting a soft kiss on his cheek. He watched the girl cracking his gummy smile âReally? I wanted to submit this last touch to Joon, so he could record the rest of the lyricsâ Seul tapped his small nose.
He scrunched his nose cutely âYou did great! Canât wait to hear the full version of the song. I can feel it in my bones that it is going to be my favourite songs from your new albumâ just by watching her giddiness boosted his confidence.
âDonât decide that now. There are more cool songs in the album. Wait for it. It is going to be a new side of Bangtan Sonyeondanâ he brought her to his arms again, resting his chin on the top of her head.
She nuzzled her face at the crook of his neck âI am with Bangtan till the endâ he caressed her hair lovingly and placed a kiss on her head.
âOf course. You are our girlâ he soothed her with a deep murmur.
Their girl. Namjoon said the same thing. Her feelings were a mixture of happiness and guilt. Sometimes she was scared of her future though she promised to live the present without worries.
She couldnât simply wash off this insecurity in her, just because it was impossible to forget. Seul had to handle her present with confidence and face her future with no fear.
Just, never let your fear decide your future.
Yeah, sheâs holding onto the principle.
-----------------
âSomeone trashed our practice room!â
âThe culprit tried to break into Hoseokâs hyung studio, but they didnât get through it. I bet they or he or she whatever were in rush. They left right after they broke into Joon hyung and Yoongi hyung studiosâ Jungkook explained to Seul with heavy pant. He was just so mad that his veins started to appear on his skin.
Seul felt angry to hear the news, the girl clenched her teeth together âDid they take anything from the studios?â Yoongi pinched the bridge of his nose with a harsh grunt.
âMy works were all gone. Those assholes! OUR HARDWORKS WERE ALL GONE! SCREW THISâ he yelled venting his frustration. Namjoon expelled a heavy sigh âThey didnât take anything from my studio, but the equipment was ruined. Ugh, I really want to kill the person who did thisâ his brow creased and he pressed his lips into a thin line.
âCCTV?â she inquired.
Shaking his head in defeat âSomeone tampered with the surveillance camera. The footage was deleted. I had no idea how they entered the buildingâ Seul frowned in disapproval.
âIt was odd how they trashed Joon and Hoseok studios but wiped off Yoongiâs works. The furniture and equipment in his room are untouchable. There is no sign of robbery. Could they be after Yoongi?â the eldest of the group spoke up with a deep furrow.
She sent Yoongi a sympathy glance knowing all his hard works being erased overnight, that must be upsetting. Who would do such things to him? Yoongi might appear unfriendly but he would not hurt anyone. He could spit the nastiest remarks on others who provoked his anger, yet that only happened when you tick off the Min Yoongi.
âDid you make any enemy outside? Anyone that rings the bell?â Jimin shifted his gaze back and forth from Jin and Yoongi. Then he pursed his lips, feeling defeated.
Yoongi watched him, while he narrowed his eyes in a deep thought. To think of the possibility, Jin assumption could be right. However, he couldnât think of any names that could possibly do this to him. After he became a trainee and debuted as BTS member, he rarely got the chance to meet someone new and make new friends. Â
He dedicated his life for his work and Bangtan, not that he remembers making any enemy outside. Maybe few people who loathed him from choosing the easiest path to become artiste. It was a long time ago since he used to be an underground rapper. Namjoon and him were hated for being an idol so they had cut off their ties with them. That was the last time they ever met the crews and to think someone would do this to him after years sounded unreasonable.
âWe found the culprit! Lets head to the company now!â their manager popped out from nowhere surprising everyone.
âWhat? How? Who?â Hoseok and Jungkook said in sync, as they were already on their feet.
The tall man nodded while grabbing the keys âHe turned himself in. We will get our answers soon. So, letâs go nowâ Seul eyes widened at the revelation. If the person really turned himself in, then why would he waste his energy to commit those crime.
âDo you want to tag along?â Yoongi touched Seul shoulder âI can make use of your presence beside me, pleaseâ his eyes bore into her. Seul hesitated to know she was in no place to be around the boys publicly.
They heard their manager emitted a deep sigh, âSeul, come with us. You may need to stop someone from causing a sceneâ his eyes were fixated on Yoongi. He knew exactly how the guy would react, Yoongiâs anger was not a joke.
âSureâŠâ Yoongi grabbed his extra mask and helped to put it on her. It was needed to protect the girl from being exposed to medias or Armys. At least, they might see her as one of the staffs instead of spreading false rumours.
For an odd reason, she didnât feel good about this. She just couldnât rid this uneasiness in her. Was she overthinking about the whole thing?

DATING SIMS ARE GOOD AND YOU SHOULD PLAY THEM: A MANIFESTO
hello everyone, I am here today to talk to you about the most important literary genre ever created. yes that's right. you know exactly which one I mean.
This write-up presumes that you know absolutely zero about dating sims (to be more specific: dating simulation videogames), except for the fact that they exist. If you didnât know that, well, now you know that. If any of this is a retread, my apologies. Please feel extremely free to comment, make corrections, additions, pile on, discourse, etc.
Part 1. Â JAPANESE DATING SIMS: INCEPTION
Dating sims weren't invented by Konami, but they're the ones responsible for massively popularizing it and establishing all the now-classic genre standards (or genre cliches, depending on how you look at it). Tokimeki Memorial came out in 1994 for PC.
Per Wikipedia, lightly edited for clarity: "In a typical dating sim, the player controls a male avatar surrounded by a variety of female characters. The gameplay involves conversing with these girls, attempting to increase their internal 'love meter' through correct choices of dialogue and action. The game lasts for a fixed period of in-game time, such as one month, or three years. When the game ends, the player either loses the game if they failed to properly win over any of the girls, or they 'complete' one of the girls' routes, achieving eternal love (or getting sex, depending on what type of sub-genre the game falls under). This gives the games more replay value, since the player can focus on a different girl each time, trying to get a different ending."
Tokimeki Memorial (and all of its subsequent sequels and spin-offs) take place during the 3 years of the player character's Japanese high school career, including archetypal events such as the sports festival, the cultural festival, Christmas, New Year's, Valentine's day, and (at the end of the game) graduation.
A poster on the Something Awful forums made an extremely comprehensive screenshot & text-based Let's Play of Tokimeki games 1 through 3, and also one of the spin-off games, where the genders are flipped. In that spin-off, the player avatar is a high school girl, pursuing various boys. (In general, gender-flipped genre variants where you play as a girl are referred to as "Otome Games," i.e. "Games for Young Ladies").
These Tokimeki Memorial Let's Plays are archived here.
In order to understand this foundational series, you definitely do not have to read this whole archive (it's approximately 1 billion words altogether. These games are long and text-heavy), but I would recommend reading reading the summary write-ups for each game in the overview page that I linked up above, and maybe the first couple update chapters for each game, so you can get a feel for the overall vibe & conventions of the genre. Or you can probably find a bunch of video LPs on YouTube, if that's more your style! Or you can play them yourself! (I played Girl's Side 2 on a Nintendo DS emulator, and enjoyed myself a whole bunch.)
I like this particular Let's Play a lot because  A. Reading is just personally easier and faster for me than watching  B. The author is really thorough and takes the time to explain all the idiosyncratic Japanese cultural tropes and references that come up, and I think that's neat.
Part 2. Â THE CONTAGION SPREADS
Any game with characters that you can "romance," or build up their "affection stats" by making various choices, owes this mechanic to dating sims.
Some examples of games from completely different genres, which nevertheless incorporate dating sim mechanics:
Every Dragon Age game, every Mass Effect game, every Knights of the Old Republic game (thanks for doing what you do, Bioware!), Fallout 4, Assassin's Creed: Odyssey, Skyrim, Grand Theft Auto 4, Stardew Valley, Harvest Moon, Final Fantasy 7, the entire Persona series, The Witcher 3, indie darlings Oxenfree and Night in The WoodsâŠ
And also, there are a bunch of games that ARE straight-up dating sims, but stray from the genre-typical high school setting and genre-typical cast of beautiful hetero romanceable characters. They may also stray from the convention of having every character be "winnable."
You probably already know about Dream Daddy, where you play as a dad, and date other dads: https://kotaku.com/dream-daddy-creators-explain-why-you-can-t-smooch-all-t-1797354455
Rose of Winter is about a female mercenary warrior hired to escort 4 handsome princes: https://kotaku.com/rose-of-winter-is-a-visual-novel-about-first-love-1788036938
Katawa Shoujo is about a boy who transfers to a school for disabled children: http://www.katawa-shoujo.com/about.php
Monster Prom is about getting hot monsters to agree to be your prom date: http://monsterprom.pizza/
Part 3. Â HEY YOU. YEAH YOU, BEHIND THE LAPTOP. HEY. YOU. I'M TALKING TO YOU. Â
*puts on sunglasses* Â Let's get...... metafictional.
Iâm not going to say much about any of the following games. Just play them. Play them blind, or as close to blind as possible.
Play this:
don't take it personally, babe, it just ain't your story
Here is a non-spoilery review if you're curious to learn more first: https://killscreen.com/articles/review-dont-take-it-personally-babe-it-just-aint-your-story/

The Start of Forever - Part 5
Part 1, Part 2, Part 3, Part 4
Pairing: Drake x MC
Word Count: 2,387
Series Summary:Â The wedding has passed and the Duke and Duchess of Valtoria are free to begin their lives together away from the constraints of court. While honeymooning in Texas, theyâre confronted with questions from their past that raise implications about their future. (Slight AU)
Chapter Summary: Drake and Jena spend some time alone after a difficult conversation with his mother.Â
Authorâs Note: Whew! Apologies for the unexpected hiatus on this story. Now that I have some free time again, I should be able to finish posting this story. I appreciate your patience through the long delay!

All things considered, Karen Walker had been rather more understanding than sheâd expected. As Jena loaded her cereal bowl into the dishwasher, she thought back over the painstaking conversation that had ended less than an hour before.
Drake had not underestimated the effect that their news would have on his mother. On learning that her son had been given a duchy, color had drained slowly from the older womanâs face until a dull white shell was all that remained. In spite of her polite responses, the visceral reactions had been painful for all three of them.
Shortly after their previous discussion had finished, Karen had pulled Drake aside for a private word. After what she'd seen over the past eighteen hours, Jena could only hope that the woman was doing him no further damage.
She tried to convince herself that sheâd done nothing but hurry along the inevitable, but guilt assailed her all the same. This certainly wasnât the way sheâd envisioned this day going. At this point, so much of their morning had been consumed by unpleasant conversation that she wondered if Drake would want to leave early for their night back in Dallas. She glanced a the stovetop clock, trying not to get her hopes up.
The quiet intonations from down the hall were at least somewhat reassuring. There had been no yelling -- of that was certain. If she was venturing to guess, she didnât think sheâd heard anything that sounded like crying either. Both seemed like signs in favor of productive conversation between mother and son.
Jena found a rag draped across the head of the faucet, dampened it, and set about clearing crumbs from the table. As she finished the final swipe across the width, she sensed a presence coming toward her.
âYou donât have to do that, Wittman.â The soft-spoken words startled out of her thoughts, despite her intuition.
âI know. But I needed something to do.â She cupped her hand underneath the cloth and shook the contents into a nearby trash can. âYou doing okay?â Having rinsed the rag, she returned it to its former spot and rubbed her hands down the front of her jeans.
âFine.â His brown eyes were trained on her, and she raised a quizzical brow as he opened and shut his mouth. Eventually, the words ventured forth. âWould you be interested in going riding? I was hoping to get the chance to show you around the ranchâŠâ
âIâd like that a lot, actually,â she assured, still taking in his appearance.
Drake looked tired. It was evident in the exaggerated slackness of the skin around his eyes. A pang of guilt plagued her as she contrasted this with their time at the cabin. Heâd been so peaceful there. After all of the stress sheâd seen on that face in the past months, it sickened her to think that sheâd been the cause of more.
âGood. We may as well get over to the stables. Have you ever actually saddled a horse, Wittman?â He raised his brow in challenge.
âNo, but I think Iâm about to learn how.âÂ
âJust as long as you donât go scaring the horses. I donât want to have to reenact that rescue from the derby.â
Jena scoffed at the slight, shaking her head in disbelief as she followed him out the front door. âYou know thatâs not how it happened, Walker.â
âOf course not,â he acquiesced, treating her to a half smile. She rolled her eyes and fell into step at his side, slipping her fingers into his.Â
Jena had only ridden horses a few times during childhood, but sheâd adjusted to the practice fairly quickly after coming to Cordonia. When she wasnât taking day-long treks for foxhunting, she found that she actually enjoyed it very much -- especially when she was fortunate enough to have her husbandâs company.
Riding around his familyâs property spawned memories of exploring Valtoria with him on horseback, and she felt a pang of longing for their home. There was so much waiting for them when they returned. As much as she had enjoyed the honeymoon, some part of her was giddy at the thought of starting real life together.
Today, however, she was focused on Drakeâs wellbeing. Other than the extremely thorough instructions as heâd guided her through the process of saddling the horses, heâd been fairly quiet since coming to find her in the kitchen. Jena's mind overflowed with words that could fill the silence, but nothing felt right. She breathed a grateful sigh when he chose to speak instead.
âI was pretty upset with you this morning, Wittman. I was sitting there drinking coffee and thinking that you were being unreasonable -- that youâd judged my mom too harshly. Iâm not so sure anymore.â
The uncertainty in his voice halted her instinctive response. Jena breathed out slowly through her nose, biding her time in case there was more he wanted to say.
âIâve never felt so angry with her before. She can doubt me all she wants, but doubting you -- I never thought sheâd go that far. Thatâs a line she shouldnât have crossed. I feel like I donât even know her anymore...â
âFor the record, I didnât want to be right,â Jena admitted softly, grateful that they kept their horses at a relaxed pace so that she could meet his gaze. Her heart clenched at the distance in his deep brown eyes. âI just know what itâs like to defend someone who doesnât deserve it. Finding out theyâre not who you thought they were...itâs a hard pill to swallow.â She fiddled with the leather reins between her fingers, hoping that she was treading lightly enough to cause no offense.
âYour dad?â he asked simply.
Nodding, she met his eyes. The distant look gave way to a tenderness that mirrored her own worry for him, and she was struck by just how broken both of their families had been. âI wasted a lot of years making excuses for him, Drake. When I finally forgave him, it wasnât because heâd done anything to deserve it. I just needed closure.â Drake stretched out a hand and she took it gratefully before continuing. âI donât want you to have to go through all of that with your mom. I hope youâre able to figure things out and find a way to start over, but please donât beat yourself up about it if youâre not.â
Her husband sighed, taking his time to respond as he turned his gaze to the horizon. âI sort of have to. I mean, dadâs not around any more. She doesnât exactly have anyone else.â
Jena shook her head in an attempt to clear the conflicting emotions. Sheâd realized long ago that his protective instinct would have a propensity for getting them in trouble. She just hadnât expected the trouble to take this form. âYou always want to defend the people you care about, Drake. Itâs one of the first things I noticed about you -- one of the things I love most about you too. But sometimes you have to think about protecting yourself. Sometimes that may even mean letting others protect you.â
âI donât like to have people worrying about me.â
âWeâve been over this beforeâŠâ
âI know. And sometimes having you around to worry about me is a good thing. I wouldnât have come clean with my mom if it hadnât been for you.â
âI hope it was the right decision.â Sheâd spent the past several hours second guessing her encouragement from the night before. âDid things...go okay?â
âHeh.â
She waited several moments, but he elaborated no further. âWhatâs that supposed to mean?â she ventured finally.
âJust that I think itâs going to take some time for her to adjust to the idea that Iâm a noble and that Iâm staying in Cordonia for good. But I think some part of her is proud too. Maybe someday sheâll come around to the idea that Iâm not just wasting my life over there.â
âDoes she really think that?â The words felt strangled as Jena worked them out of her throat. So many of her early interactions with Drake became clearer as she considered Karenâs likely influence.
He clicked his tongue to encourage the horse, but her question remained unanswered. Several paces later, he came to a sudden stop. Jena pulled the reins gently and dismounted to stand beside him in the tall grass.
âWeâll let the horses graze for a bit.â
She stroked the mareâs bony cheek and dropped the reins, putting her hands in her pockets instead. Squinting against the mid-morning sun, she followed Drake to a line of fencing nearby. Green stretched before them on every side, the light wind stirring long blades of grass into mesmerizing waves. She wondered vaguely if this was the sight that had enticed Karen to come back from Cordonia. Out here, in the warmth of late spring, it wasnât hard to imagine the appeal that this land must have held.
Drake leaned against the nearest post, a wrinkle forming between his brows. With ease, Jena mounted the fence beside him, steadying herself with a certain hand.
Did I cross a line? Why hasnât he answered my question? Jena hated the thought that her carelessness might have caused such distress. A week ago, she wouldnât have been so bothered by the thought. Now, as this manâs wife, she felt some measure of responsibility to read his mind. The notion was ridiculous, but present nonetheless. Just as she was clearing her throat, he spoke.
âIâm not sure what my mother thinks anymore. She didnât take it very well when I moved back to Cordonia. Wanted me to forge my own path instead of running back to the palace.â
âDo you ever regret it?â
âGoing back?â At her nod, he continued. âI had a lot of questions at the time, but in a way, momâs right. Iâd been following Liam around for so long that it was easier to just settle back into that when I came back from the States. It took me a while to find where I belonged in all of it. Â But no, I donât regret it. Cordonia is home.â
âYouâve found your way now. And with or without the courtly graces, youâre still Drake Walker,â she beamed encouragingly. âI just wish your mom had taken the chance to get to who that man is.â A fresh sting of remorse accompanied the words, and she looped her fingers around the hand that rested beside her on the fence.
Drake interlocked his fingers with her own and lifted his face tentatively. âI think Iâd like for her to get the chance to.â
Her pulse quickened at the meaning that underpinned his words. Biting her tongue, she shifted her weight toward him and took in his pensive expression.
âI donât want to do anything youâre not comfortable with.â He hiked a hand through his hair. âBut Iâm not sure Iâd ever forgive myself if I cut the relationship off completely. Iâd always wonder if things could have been different. Iâm not saying that I want to come out here for Christmases or anything, but--â preoccupied, he ceased speaking as she squeezed his hand.Â
âIâll support whatever you choose, Drake. I canât say I have a very good first impression of her, but I respect how much she means to you. If I had any hope of my dad changing for the better, Iâd probably make the same choice.â Her tone grew wistful at the impossible notion. âBut I think weâre going to have to find a compromise. I donât want you bending over backward to make her a part of our lives if she wonât even meet you halfway. You canât do that to yourself, Drake.â
âAgreed.â
âSo sheâs going to have to understand that there are boundaries she canât cross. Itâs going to take some time for us to establish trust again.â
âSounds fair to me,â he considered, stroking her knuckles with his thumb as he looked to her face. âSheâs been through a lot, Jena. I donât want to put her through more than she deserves.â
âI know,â she responded quickly to the flash of pain in his eyes. âBut if she puts you through more than you deserve, sheâll have me to contend with.â Although her tone was light, they both knew that the threat was genuine.
He hoisted himself onto the fence beside her, dropping his hands to his sides. âI never thought Iâd be so happy to get back to Valtoria, but Iâm really looking forward to it.â
She offered a wry smile. âI am too. I know weâre going to try to work things out here, but I canât wait to get back to Dallas and then home.â
âItâs the last night of our trip, Wittman. How do you want to spend it?â
âSeeing as itâs the last night of our honeymoon,â she emphasized, âI was thinking room service, hot tub, andâŠsome drinks.â
âNow thatâs a plan I can get behind.â
âIâm not going overboard though. Weâve got a day full of traveling tomorrow.â
âWeâll sleep it off on the plane.â
âMaybe you will," she joked, hopping down from the fence. âIâll be awake for it all.â
âEven if I keep you up all night?â
Jena threw him a look over her shoulder. "That didnât exactly work for the trip out here." He extended a hand toward her and she settled into the space between his legs, running her palms against toned thighs that were stretched taut from his heels pressing into the lower rail.
"Iâll take that as a challenge.â The glint in his eyes sent tendrils of heat through her core.
âJust keeping you on your toes, Walker.âÂ
Drake shook his head at her accompanying wink.Â
âReady when you are,â she announced, rising to the tips of her toes. Drake cradled her cheek in his hand and leaned into the kiss. His lips were soft and warm, heated by the morning sun. She snaked her arms around his waist and melted into him with pleasure. When she finally pulled away, it took several moments for her head to clear.
The kiss told her all she needed to know. They would make it through this. Together.Â

If you had to choose 10 marxian econ books for someone who has only read marx, what would you recommend
by âmarxâ i have to assume you mean capital because that really is the root of âmarxian econâ. it wonât suffice to just have read the manifesto or something like that and i donât want to recommend books that will be saying things that youâre totally unfamiliar with because youâre skipping straight into the secondary literature which already largely assumes a reader which is familiar with capital. anyway, heres a list, which isnt in any particular order and which includes a few things that iâm still working through for myself:
1. essays on marxs theory of value - isaak rubinÂ
hugely important book which essentially all value-form theory derives from. written by an extremely knowledgeable marx scholar who had a much better idea of what marx was doing in capital than most marxists today. last month brill published a book called âresponses to marxs capitalâ which includes some of rubinâs other writings, most of them being published in english for the first time. hes a huge figure in the literature and definitely worth looking in to.Â
2. marx, capital, and the madness of economic reason - david harvey
i was obviously going to put something of harveyâs in here and i think his last book is a fairly good summary of the best of what hes done up to this point with some welcome additions (the visualization of capital, the stuff on anti-value, etc). not perfect but he definitely provides a good framework for how to understand the geography of capital which doesnt require necessarily agreeing with him on everything. honestly, if you keep up with harvey at all youâll be able to tell that its mostly just typical harveyisms with the inclusion of some stuff from his recent talks (which have all been almost exactly the same).Â
3. in the long run we are all dead - geoff mann
maybe this looks more like a book on keynesian rather than marxian econ, but its real argument is that keynesianism as a long historical project (meaning long before and after keynes himself) has been an immanent critique of liberalism and revolution and that keynes is to us what hegel was to marx. a really great book that covers a lot of ground which isnt always explicitly economic, but definitely worth the read if you have the patience. if you want a longer review, i left a pretty lengthy one on amazon a few months ago where you can get a better idea of what i got from this book, what its limitations are, and why i think its so important.Â
4. monopoly capital - paul baran & paul sweezyÂ
an older book which hasnt exactly aged well, but its thesis has become extremely popular again since the crisis. written by baran and sweezy, the fathers of âthe monthly review schoolâ of economics, its played a huge role in the direction of marxian debates from the 1960s up until today. the authors were both tending in the same intellectual direction in their earlier works (sweezyâs theory of capitalist development and baranâs political economy of growth, the former still being considered one of the best introductions to marxs work and its relevance to the 20th century, with much controversy of course) and this was the result of them coming together to talk about what they saw as a monopoly capitalism which was fairly different in character than the âcompetitive capitalismâ of marxâs day and therefore had to be dealt with differently.Â
5. capitalism - anwar shaikh
probably the most ambitious work the left has seen in a long time which tries to thoroughly critique neoclassical theory and develop an alternative economics which is rooted in what shaikh calls the âclassicalâ school (âclassical-marxianâ would probably be more appropriate but i think hes trying to downplay his reliance on marx). in it, shaikh takes a good look at many of the competing schools of thought (neoclassical, post-keynesian, sraffian/neo-ricardian, etc) and sees how they stand up analytically and empirically, taking issue with their underlying assumptions and the inevitable problems which arise from building a theory on false foundations.Â
one of his bigger points is that the neoclassical theory of âperfect competitionâ is nonsensical but wasnt thoroughly combatted by heterodox economists, who only made it so far as asserting the âimperfectâ nature of competition, which, in shaikhâs eyes, is to simply add imperfections after the fact into the theory which necessarily begins with the absurd assumption of perfection. the bookâs argument is that the theorists of âimperfect competitionâ still rely on the theory of âperfect competitionâ as their starting point and never really manage to escape the latter because they havent actually created an alternative way of thinking about competition, theyâve just inserted a complication into a theory which was a completely unrealistic assumption to begin with. much of his attack is directed at the monthly review school and the idea of a âmonopoly capitalismâ which is supposedly different in form than the allegedly âperfect competitionâ of capitalism during marxs life. in this sense, this book serves as a counterbalance to the MR approach and is also probably the most successful attempt at situating marxs TRPF within an empirical study of kondratiev waves.Â
hes also got a website with a bunch of resources and a lecture series from a course he did on the material in the book which is pretty interesting, but it assumes a good deal of familiarity with economics.Â
6. a history of marxian economics - michael howard & john king (2 volumes)
this is a pretty thorough history of the internal debates among marxian economists ever since the death of marx all the way up to 1990. it covers a lot of ground and doesnt shy away from controversies where marx didnt come out on top. of course, a good amount of this is subject to the interpretation of the authors and they definitely have a great deal of input, but its a very impressive work which i frequently use as a marxian encyclopedia of sorts.Â
7. the making of marxâs capital - roman rosdolsky
despite some problems, rosdolskyâs classic book on the development of marxâs critique of political economy is easily one of the most important marxological works ever written and it still holds a lot of sway. taking the grundrisse as its starting point, the author unpacks marxâs project and constantly asserts marxâs method and in particular his explicit reliance on hegelâs logic, pitting marx (as he was in his drafts) against the then contemporary thinkers and critics which were prone to misusing or misunderstanding the arguments in capital. as a disclaimer and partial criticism of rosdolskyâs portrait of marx, i dont believe that we can simply say that marx in the late 50s was identical to the marx of the 60s and 70s that wrote and published capital, but i also dont think that means we necessarily have to discount the grundrisse (or theories of surplus value, etc) simply because they werent written at precisely the right time for marxs thinking.Â
i only just got my own copy a couple of weeks ago so i cant say too much more but i have skimmed through chunks of the pdf and its totally unavoidable in the secondary literature so im not totally unfamiliar. its one i plan on tackling in full very soon.
8. moneybags must be so lucky - robert paul wolff
another marxological one, this tiny book is a literary analysis of capital and in particular the first part of volume 1. wolff does a great job of deconstructing the arguments in chapter 1 to try and clarify what marx is doing and why with a lot of humor and philosophical tangents. one of his biggest points is that marxs heavy reliance on irony was the only adequate way of capturing the contradictory nature of capitalism and is therefore part of the theory itself, rather than simply being a way to dress up the theory and make it more palatable to readers. i approached this book after id already âread marxâ too, but it was extremely useful because it wasnt until i read it that i finally started to actually understand marx. for that reason, i dont feel particularly bad about recommending it to anyone thats already familiar with capital because it does a great job of making the most difficult part of volume 1 infinitely more exciting and comprehensible â especially since its never enough to just read capital once.Â
9. the production of commodities by means of commodities - piero sraffa
against my better judgement, iâm putting this on the list knowing full-well that iâm going to be harassed by an anon which has been on my ass for about a year now ever since i first recommended sraffaâs book in a reading list despite the fact that ive never finished it (barely even read it to be more precise). i do, however, know that its had a huge influence on the trajectory of marxian thought since 1960 and that many of the thinkers are still trying to recover from the theoretical displacement implicit in sraffaâs thesis.Â
its a math-heavy book (which is why i havent been able to wade through it) and its status as a work coming from the âmarxianâ approach is hotly contested, but its certainly had its way with the marxian school (not to mention the neoclassical school, which has an easier time simply ignoring sraffa entirely), generating countless debates among scholars, many of whom simply wish that this book had never been written. for a short summary of the debate and whats apparently at stake, ive got an old post where i worked out some of the initial responses to sraffa and how this has snowballed into the controversy that it is today. ive got it on this list because of how unavoidable it is. you cant go into the secondary literature at anything resembling an intermediate level without knowing sraffaâs name and why everyone feels so strongly about him.
10. an introduction to the three volumes of karl marxs capital - michael heinrich
i dont quite like that im ending this list with a book that presents itself as an âintroductionâ when weâve already established that this is a bunch of recommendations for someone thats already acquainted with capital, but sadly this is the only full-length book that heinrich has in the english language and its reading of capital is so unorthodox that it feels totally alien against all the traditional interpretations of marx. honestly, it doesnt feel like an introduction in the first place, reading more like a challenge and an intervention into the secondary debates about what marx is saying in capital which derives from the german debates which constitute the parameters for the âneue marx-lektureâ, or âthe new reading of marxâ, which sits uncomfortably among the more typical marxisms that surround it on all sides, especially among non-german theorists/readers.Â
as far as the dominant reading of marx goes, nearly everything this book says betrays marxâs project, but heinrich knows marx very well, better than most of us (as even his biggest critics readily admit). this may be considered reflective of a ânew readingâ, but that doesnt mean the old ones are any better or that this one is necessarily a ârevisionistâ project as many claim (or at least, i wouldnt consider it to be revising marx even if its guilty of revising âmarxismâ, which is by no means necessarily a bad thing). on the contrary, i think heinrich has the best understanding of marx out of pretty much everyone else right now and thats why i wanted to end with this one. yes, you should read all of the others, especially since you cant understand the way we read and think about marx without coming across the work of people like sraffa and sweezy, but that doesnt really change the fact that heinrich points to a big problem with the way we read and think about marx, that the debates have been getting it wrong all along and largely misunderstanding marxs actual project, miscontextualizing it and falling into dogmatism for various political or academic reasons.Â
what heinrich does is to show how the way marx is read and interpreted often misses or downplays the most crucial elements of what marx is actually trying to get across. marxs critique of political economy simply gets converted into a newer, more correct political economy which simply builds on the classical school (shaikh), or it suffers in the hands of those that believe its foundations need to be updated as if it isnt all that relevant anymore (sweezy and baran), or that many of its categories are lacking utility and can simply be done away with (sraffa). rubinâs work plays a big part in establishing the NML reading and harvey draws on heinrichâs scholarship a lot, but nobody really does it as well as heinrich himself and i genuinely think hes lightyears ahead of everyone else. a lot of people are starting to agree and i was one of the most recent converts on the heinrich hype train which has been growing for the last couple of years.Â
any day now, we should be getting one of his older books, the science of value, in english and i plan on devouring it as fast as i can, but sadly its been in limbo for several years, with its initial release scheduled for 2014 (if i remember correctly). in the mean time though, weâve only got his introduction to capital and a bunch of shorter pieces/videos. Â
so i guess thats my list of 10 things to read after marx with some explanations on why i think theyre important, culminating in ideologically correct heinrich-worship. this was sorta fun and if you have any other questions feel free to ask.Â
