I assembled this zine to collect drabbles written for my D&D group, and I'm sharing it with you all today.

Special thanks to @fury-brand for drawing the illustrations used in this zine and for buying my drabble commission slots on behalf of the group. She has made a lot of really cool art for our group and for her character Dia especially, so you should check it out if you like this!

This was a really fun project. It was great to play in the 100 word limit with different styles and character voices to make something tailored for each character.

I assembled this zine so that I could make a special and unique home for all of the pieces together. It was put together in Scribus, a free and open source layout tool.

Embodied

The snow feels wrong. It mushes against the strange pliant dough stretched across her soles, shoots her through with a kind of pain she's never felt before. It bites, metallic, as though she can feel the pinprick of each shard of each snow flake. The air, too, grips her. All of this, wrong. Never before had the winds caused her pain, nor had snow felt anything but pleasant on even her tenderest scales. Winter has abandoned her. It was in her very weft and now all she has is this naked pink putty. No way for a dragon to live.

Life should be fun. Things would be far too boring without a bit of mischief to keep it interesting, ya know? Just a dash like spice in the stew. Nothing serious, maybe swipe a shiny here or snack there.

Things can change pretty fast out on the road though. It gets scary out there, with monsters and bad guys. Sometimes I think I should have just stayed home.

But hey, one minute you're strumming along up and down the strings of a bouzouki, tickling the melody to and fro, and bam! Out comes the zouka. Didn't expect that, didja spookies?

Just World Fallacy

Let us consider the situation rationally. Which situation is more likely?

The first, that I was conceived by two emotionally stunted people unprepared for the maturity, care, and mundane sacrifices of parenthood? That I lived at the whims of a man who took out rage and fear on his vulnerable son? That my mother could bring me into the world but shrink my existence so small in her heart that she could ignore it? That suffering is largely beyond our control and the world is fundamentally unfair?

Or that I am unloveable and it's my fault?

The answer is obvious.

My face mirrored in a gleaming scale. I chased it like the glint of oasis after days walking parched sands. Was it a mirage? I follow its path and come no closer, but the image does not fade. Still there, out of reach, ever on the horizon.

What is she really like? I've imagined her on the highest pedestal, with every sublime virtue, and in the deepest depravity, with every foul cruelty. Perhaps she is simply a well-meaning fool, doing her best.

Do I truly want to know? Would the mirage dissolve, and would that be for good or ill?

Halloween Spotlight!

We are getting into the Halloween spirit today with Luke Geddes's TV Guide parody zine TV Grime Vol. 1. Geddes describes TV Grime as “a compendium of deeply personal reflections on every Halloween-themed television episode I’ve ever seen, laid out in a TV Guide-style grid on over 100 newsprint pages.” His reviews are accompanied by a ratings system that judges each episode’s Autumnal Ambiance, Spooky Vibes, Fright Factor, and Overall Quality, along with a detailed channel guide on where to watch.  

The issue covers all the big-hitting sitcoms of the 80s, 90s and 00s, including Growing Pains, Fraiser, Martin, Party of Five, Freaks and Geeks, and delightfully has four pages dedicated to The Simpsons' annual Treehouse of Horror episodes. Sprinkled throughout, readers are treated to old network advertisements of their Halloween line-ups. 

TV Grime Vol. 1 was printed in Milwaukee, WI October 2022 by Geddes's record label and publishing company Works of Love and is available online here.

I'm going to release a Halloween special of Rewritten Sparks for an MHA zine!

To set the mood, I thought I'd share some spooky facts that I added to Rewritten Sparks plot.

So I'm not going to deny it. Some of the plot is inspired by both MLB and Madoka Magica, specifically All for One being able to corrupt civilians a la Hawk Moth. But there some cultural influence that I implanted.

The yokai of Japanese legend are actually AfO's first attempt at creating nomu, but his victims had a lot more free will than normal nomu, so they were essentially to him.

Those nomu were never able to move on, causing their souls to fester and linger in certain areas of the world. In Japan's case, they become yokai. The longer they stay planted in an area, the more infected it becomes, turning into a labyrinth like plane.

I am so sorry for answering this so late but a Halloween special does sound so interesting!

Love to see the inspiration from miraculous and madoka magic!!! Nice touch, tbh (yes, I am saying this because I have watched and low-key enjoyed both series even if there are problems with MLB's writing)

There's something so ironic about having AFO basically act like gabriel agreste. Maybe it's because they're so similar in terms of both of them not letting go of their loved ones, aka emille and yoichi.

The creation of an "akuma" could just be a quirk, or it could be one of Dr Garaki's experiments where he merged two quirks together to create a similar effect. This can probably be done with him merging a mind control quirk and another quirk to produce this hypnosis effect.

These nomu's become stuck in their own emotions, unable to move on. Due to the extremity of their emotions AFO would have a hard time controlling them and getting them to do what he wants them to do so he would probably abandon them which may just make the nomu's more powerful depending on their feelings towards AFO. I say this because during AFO's rise, people truly believed in him and viewed him almost as a ruler that dictated their entire beings, meaning that some may have truly been loyal to their master but were betrayed.

I think delving deep and using Japanese folklore for some of the yokai you show would also be interesting or having some of the yokai be inspired by Japanese folklore.

While neither the mha main manga or vigilantes delve deeply into the idea of ghosts or yokai, we do know and see that there are supernatural beings. The vestiges of people's quirks can be recognised as such, and in the vigilantes manga, it is stated that Aizawa's homeroom teacher has a quirk that allows him to see spirits and that he acts as an exorcist so there's definitely huge potential to explore this a lot more.

The fact that the manga states that their homeroom teacher is like an exorcist has me thinking that something like a labyrinth caused by a yokai definitely happened.

Little observation, but your idea for the Halloween special vaugley reminds me of yokai watch

Hey everyone!  I wanna do little reviews/writeups for the independently-published books I find on itch.io, and so, here I am.  I want to review one book every month or two (or quicker, if I’m lucky); it’ll get me reading more, and get authors who often go without feedback some thoughts on their work!  I think it’ll be cool for everyone!

It’s book time, and I’m gonna book all over the place!  Today, I’m taking a look at Tales From The Screens, a spooky tale told in the form of employee pamphlets for a haunted electronic store.  It’s written by literal_roach_king, an artist who specializes in creating kandi bracelets (which I LOVE), adoptables, and zines.  The pivot to Nightvale-inspired horror content seems a bit out of left field, but I see that as a good thing—after all, it’s awesome to expand your horizons and explore new territory!  Tales From The Screens launched with 3 zines/chapters, and I expect that there will be more in the future.  Let’s look over the story so far, shall we?

The first zine, A Guide For The Initiated, acts as an introduction to the story and world, informing new employees of the universe-defying job they’ve taken on.  We learn that the story takes place as Eidel’s Electronics, and the people who work at the store are known as “Keepers”.  To quote the book, “Here, you [the Keeper] are not simply guarding old TVs— you are protecting the world from the dangerous forces trapped inside them. These TVs hold the stories of those lost to the unknown, and your job is to ensure that these stories never escape.”  The electronics are “gateways to otherworldly realms”, who cannot be allowed to break free from their television prisons.

The book goes over basics of the store: the layout (which puts the “safest” TVs at the front, and the most dangerous TVs in the basements), types of images the TV may broadcast, rituals a Keeper must perform if a TV shows signs of breaking free, what indicates a customer has been entranced by the TV, and what to do in a big emergency.  The guide concludes with, “Never forget: the screens are always watching, and it is you who must ensure they never escape.”

The second & third zines—A Broadcast Too Long & Static In The Basement, respectively—give us employee testimonials of strange occurrences at the store, via transcripts of recorded interviews.  We also meet our main cast: Maya Calderón, a Keeper who’s quick on her feet; Jonah Harper, a senior Keeper; Callie Bennet, a Keeper-in-Training; and Arthur O’Connell aka “Artie”, whose title isn’t stated but who I assume is a Keeper-in Training.

In A Broadcast Too Long, Maya sees a strange flicker from a TV, and soon enough, the television has hypnotized all of the customers in the store.  She & Jonah manage to stop it from breaking free, but not before the TV asks Maya to join them, and says, “You can’t turn us off. We’re always here. Always watching.”

In Static In The Basement, Jonah goes with Callie, an overly-curious employee, after a staticy sound comes up from, well, the basement.  Once they get there, Callie is sucked into the TV, and the TV shows distorted images of her, turning & twisting her body.  Thankfully, Jonah & Maya manage to get Callie out of there.

Reading these zines reminded me of watching analog horror content, like The Mandela Catalogue.  I found the story & premise very interesting, and the story so far takes good advantage of the premise.  I also noticed that is appears that the story takes place in the past—the TVs are analog, and Artie is shown listening to a Walkman.

I do have some questions so far.  I ask these not to deride the work, but to genuinely try to engage with and understand the world & story:

Why are the TVs set up in a electronics shop at all?  If they feed off of people, why give them what they want by putting them in a storefront?

If these are employee pamphlets, then it’s safe to assume there’s a company of some sort that runs the electronic store and guards the TVs.  Who are they?  How did they come into existence?

How does one come across a job application to be a Keeper?  Does it look normal at first, or are they introduced to the strange right away?

If a Keeper gets fired, what’s to stop them from going rogue and trying to release the TVs?

I assume more employee pamphlets will be released as this series goes on, so perhaps I’ll revisit this in the future!  I really enjoyed what I saw and I’m looking forward to seeing where it goes.

monthly media recap: december 2023

King Arthur’s Enchantresses: Morgan and Her Sisters in Arthurian Tradition by Carolyne Larrington - an analysis of development of Morgan, Morgause, and different incarnations of the Lady of the Lake from the earlier Arthurian texts to modern retellings ("modern" going as late as the 20th century, so no mention of, say, BBC Merlin or Starz Camelot yet). What I found the most interesting was a glimpse into the romances/books I haven't read (yet) and the chapters on Arthurian female characters - mainly the Lady of the Lake - in Pre-Raphaelite art. Lowkey made me wanna reread A. S. Byatt's Possession too, because it was mentioned in this book at some point.

Hellebore Zine Yuletide Hauntings special - another nice batch of articles on the spooky and mysterious in the British history and literature, with beautiful illustrations to boot. This zine has really become one of my favourite little treats to get myself last year.

The School in Carmarthen (Школа в Кармартене) by Anna Korostelyova - a lowkey legendary Russian fantasy novel that's been only published online and in a couple of very small printing runs, and which I was recommended about nine years go (better late then never, yeah). It's set in a Welsh school of magic where the teachers are various mythical and historical figures. Apart from some loose plotlines such as students trying to uncover the past of some of the teachers and the school being threatened to be closed by the bureaucrats, it's basically a sitcom composed of many slices of life. Normally not my cup of tea. But I was reading something more plot-heavy at the same time, and this book was cute and actually funny, with some witty jabs ar British imperialism (and at Harry Potter; for example, one of the characters is basically Snape if he wasn't a dick), so I enjoyed it.

+ I read a couple of articles mentioned in this post (the ones on Villette and Rebecca specifically) and am now reading this research paper on same-sex intimacy and desire in Les Mis and its adaptations and thinking about how glad I am that most of what I see of the Les Mis fandom on my dashboard these days is focused on canon era. Also, still reading One Piece manga, currently at Ch. 839

Hello fellow horror fan! I'm so glad someone noticed!! Yes, I am a HUGE horror fanatic. It's like a major part of my identity!!! I love horror movies, video games, books, literally all things spooky. I've got posters all over my apartment, a stupid amount of trinkets, including a Pyramid Head plushie that's my pride and joy. :)

Horror is a fantastic genre brimming with creative ideas and it is such a healthy outlet for the anxieties of life. It is also uniquely relevant for the social scientist in me. Horror can provide great insights into how social problems become ingrained in the public consciousness, shedding light on the fears and concerns of different eras, especially in the last 100 or so years since the film industry was created. I took a monster-themed class on college last year, and am following it up with a film studies course this next semester. I write a lot about the monstorous feminine and gender studies in relation to the horror. Because, as horror reflects the concerns of the outside world, how women get treated within them is fascinating material to explore power dynamics, social expecations, and persistent fears. One of my favorites was a piece I did on feminist commentary in 2019's Ready or Not. My graduating project is going to be a zine-style work where I'm choosing 4 different horror films with 4 core aspects of the female experience and I'm so excited to start it!

To actually answer your question, my favorite horror films as of now go as:

As Scream is my favorite horror series, I'd have to say Sidney Prescott is my favorite final girl. She's just such a resilient badass and I love all of the Scream films and her journey so much!

Fear of Flying - A deep dive into my aerospace engineering special interest, technically includes a lot of hand-holding. (This one's really taking off.) (Oh no, it's stalled.)

Heating Pad - A cat adopts Hermann.

Expectation vs. Reality - My take on their first meeting. (Complete but needs another pass to make Hermann more of a dick.) (I added a fourth chapter as an afterthought and it's the best thing I've ever written. I reread this and I cry genuine tears, WTF.)

Hermann's Ex - Newt meets Hermann's siblings and Learns Things he never knew before. (Complete but the last chapter really went off the rails.)

Thriller - The Shatterdome is kind of spooky at night.

There Was Only One Bed - We like tropes here. (This was supposed to be a trope subversion but I forgot where it was going, so I guess it's just the trope now.)

Miserable, Lonely and Depressed (Pathetic) - The return of Cool Uncle Newt. (He's not cool, he's possessed.)

Vampire AU - I mean obviously I had to write a vampire AU at some point. (Comedy.)
