what are your top 5 fics by kudos?

1 - Unexpected (Bojack Horseman, Bojack/Mr. Peanutbutter fake dating to romance) has over 1.4k kudos. It's the second most kudosed fic in the fandom, and used to be the top before being surpassed by a massive crossover fic. I'm actually really proud of it--it's pretty different from what I usually write, and I think it's both pretty funny and feels true to the canon.

2 - you know what they say about assumptions (Star Wars, Anakin/Obi-Wan/Padme modern AU) has just over 900 kudos. It's the first fic of mine that someone podficced. I haven't reread it in a while, and I was in high school when I wrote it so I'm sure I can find a lot of flaws, but it got a good response.

3 - Into the Dark (IT Movies, Richie/Eddie, time loop) has just over 750 kudos. I wrote a lot of Reddie fics in the approximate 9-13k range and at this point they all sort of blend together, but this was one of the earlier ones I wrote and it's fix-it for the canon, so I assume that's why it's popular.

4 - The Kids Are Alright (IT Movies, Richie/Eddie, teenage getting together fic) has just over 700 kudos. Another longish Reddie fic from this era, and I have fond feelings about this one too!

5 - Lights Will Guide You Home (Star Wars unfinished epic fix-it fic) has just shy of 650 kudos and is almost out of the top five, thank god. This was an ambitious attempt that was the first fic I posted on this account, and I did not finish it and have not touched since high school. Sometimes I contemplate going back, but I have not updated it in... seven years, wow. I've grown and changed a lot as a writer since that time and have freed myself from Star Wars, so I'm not up to date on the lore.

do you respond to comments? why or why not?

I used to, and I also used to go back and respond in batches, but I've fallen off of that in a few years. Partly because I used to just do it as soon as I saw the email and then when I started doing exchanges I wanted to wait until author reveals, and then the backlog became overwhelming. As well as often feeling like I had very little to say and feeling kind of embarrassed about it, lol. I do try my best to go back and respond after author reveals of an exchange, at least to the recipient, but it doesn't always end up happening. I do read and appreciate every single comment, though.

what's the fic you've written with the angstiest ending?

Probably quiet birds in circled flight -- IT Movies, AU where Richie commits suicide instead of Stan. It's been a while since I've written just a straight up Grief Fic and I enjoy that writing headspace.

what's the fic you've written with the happiest ending?

That feels hard to define, haha. I write a lot of noncon and darkfic, and even the ones that aren't noncon or entirely dark have some darkness to them, but I think in IT fandom I did write a few longer, earn-your-happy ending fics. The two listed in my top five above fall into that category--and I guess the Bojack fic as well. full heart and other organs is a fairly sweet, essentially pre-relationship AFTG AU.

do you write crossovers?

I have not written one. I tried to write one for a fic event once and didn't finish it... and I found buried in my google docs two Magnus Archives/The Good Place crossover fics that I didn't finish. But none published, haha.

have you ever received hate on a fic?

I got a barrage of hate comments on a werewolf sex fic because it was a full form shifted werewolf and people thought that was the same as the character fucking an animal, but other than that, no lol.

do you write smut? if so, what kind?

Yeah...

I've written a very wide variety from fluff to kink to noncon. I enjoy writing it and I think it's probably the kind of writing I'm best at, just based on sheer amount written.

have you ever had a fic stolen?

I think someone posted some of my Reddie fic on Wattpad but tbh I don't think I even looked at it until it had already been taken down.

have you ever had a fic translated?

Yes! One of my AFTG fics has been translated into Russian.

have you ever co-written a fic before?

No. I'm interested in the idea, but writing is a very solitary activity for me, and I don't think I've ever had a specific idea that aligned enough with someone else (and both with an interest in writing it) to try it.

what's your all-time favorite ship?

Lol, I don't think I can confidently say! I tend to leave fandoms and then not really get pulled back in. The fandom I'm most confident in calling a forever fandom is AFTG, where Neil/Andrew is like, the better ship, but Neil/Riko lives in my hindbrain as a noncon ship of all time.

what's a wip that you want to finish but don't think you ever will?

Well, that Star Wars fic from 2017 >__> most of the others have not seen the light of day. Actually I finished a very long Danganronpa fic about a year ago and I recently realized I don't think I will be able to edit it or reread it maybe for a very long time, and probably not publish it even if I do, which does make me sad. Too tied up in my ex.

what are your writing strengths?

Porn. Lmao. But I think I'm also good at comedy, though maybe not consistently.

what are your writing weaknesses?

I'm not good at writing long or writing subplots. I struggle with research and being intimidated by the idea of research, so that feels very limiting in terms of what fandoms I can try to write.

what are your thoughts on writing dialogue in other languages in a fic?

I don't think I've ever done it. I can see narrative utility in certain cases, but most of the time "they said in French" or whatever will do just fine. A nickname from another language that is not the primary language the characters are speaking is not something I've written personally--I would probably only do that if it was established by canon.

what was the first fandom you wrote for?

The Hunger Games, when I was 12, on FFN. The first fandom I posted on AO3 was Star Wars.

what's a fandom/ship you haven't written for yet but want to?

I am between hyperfixations at the moment and the only thing I've started and have some hope for is... a bit embarrassing, so I probably won't talk about it until I publish it if I do so haha

what's your favourite fic you've written?

I like a lot of my fics, and I've had a lot of fun going back and rereading ones that I haven't read in long enough that I actually don't remember everything that's happening, but I think the fic I am proudest of is the fic I wrote for a TLT big bang last year, Crashing. It's the longest piece of fiction I have ever completed and it felt like a massive accomplishment.

(Your writings and analysis of in game dialogues has been a great enjoyment to read. I can even go as far to say that you are the hero we always need, expanding on the voice’s whereabouts after the ending of stp’s storyline. Great work, truly)

AAAAAA, THIS IS SO KIND OF YOU? Thank you truly, kind anonymous person, this was so flattering to wake up and find in my ask box ;-; I feel like there are a lot of ways the Voices after the story ends could be taken, and that's not just because of the many different endings! This one makes me really happy to think about, but there are one or two other ideas I might want to play with after this one... As for characterizing, I want to touch on that for a moment because it's been a lot of fun:

Ooh boy hyperfixation. I have done so much playing and watching this game and reading posts about it and having discussions about it. I have seen certain Voices's dialogue and actions a lot, though I still forget some of it sometimes!

I've been making little lists of synonyms for their Main Named Traits (and occasional other traits they exhibit in-game) to figure out, like, what are positive and negative traits an opportunistic person might have? (Aggressive, diligent, aspiring, industrious, enterprising, dynamic, ambitious, scrappy, energetic, competitive, backstabber, double-dealer, schemer, gossip...) It's surprisingly helpful and also pretty interesting~

It can also help with characterization to really pick specific ways that you see the characters that you really lean into and work to make logical and understandable. I can, for example, absolutely imagine not interpreting Cold as being the type to rise to Smitten's bullshit and actually attack him just due to being punched and challenged to a fight. But one thing I'm definitely leaning into for my fic, at least this fic, is the idea that almost no character in the game has existed for very long, and the Voices' only experience with fights have been ones that are incredibly violent and deadly. So a characterization trait I'm leaning into for this fic is that currently, all of them are treating a challenge as a threat and a scrap as something that could lead to death. This isn't characterization that everyone would use (or that I may use in every fic!), but it's something I feel makes a lot of sense and (I hope!) I can write in a way that feels natural.

ANYWAY YES that is my Process XD You may not have actually been asking about that but I hope it was of some interest anyway! It's a lot of fun to work on figuring out how characters might act in unusual situations, and it's been A Lot trying to juggle so many of them at once so I'm super super glad to hear that you enjoy them!! 💖

Headcanon - Xev and Axl headcanoned as autistic

AND A LITTLE MORE ON AXL IN THIS!!

I'm struggling coming up with headcanons lately and wanna write other things, so I might stop for a little bit after this one. My backlog of headcanons are a little short right now, esp ones that aren't spoiler heavy, so I'll stop for the moment and focus on writing other fics

Once I'll have more headcanons, you'll know when I post a new one!! Especially the world building headcanons when I write more for the towns!! I might post something I'm planning on writing today which I can finally post a new series on AO3 I've been meaning to make for the past few years!! I'm excited!!

Anyway, have this lengthy headcanon I have a lot of thoughts on~

Half a headcanon for Axl and half not for X just yet, I’m still deciding but

I wanted to talk about this primarily because I wanted some characters I can relate to in regards to this topic. Plus, either one has tendencies in one having the potential and the other having that kind of vibe period. At least to me, in most regards.

NEW CHAPTER ON AO3

I pretty much viewed Axl mostly with the autism I had in mind. Pretty much similar abilities and disabilities to mine- basically kinda projecting from this character but also making him his own, pretty much canon in his own right, and also kinda tweaking him to what I personally view him as.

We all know Axl is the young and ambitious but risk taking and noble hunter we've known up to X8. But that's basically all we know about him. I'll touch on his backstory sometime when I finally start the bio series for these characters.

But point is, that's all we know, and we don't have anything else to go off of except for our headcanons of him and depict it best we can from the source material. And this is my take on him besides the autism headcanon: He's a young adult and very ambitious, but from what he's learned from Red himself and his team of wannabe Maverick Hunters, he learns to adapt to his delta nano powers, gain close friendships and learn what his goal and purpose would be in life. Especially after certain events in his life that change it drastically. One that brings him into Red Alert into the first place, and years later after something happens to his found family.

He had to rush to the Maverick Hunters and rush for help in a panic when he couldn't face whatever was happening, and he was torn apart until he got to meet X and Zero in person. Except they're going through something themselves that he eventually had to get into the middle of. Especially bonding with Zero and trying to talk to X, which doesn't work.

Basically kind of a reverse scenario with Iris talking to Xev while Axl talks to Zero more in depth. And I do mean the key words being "kind of". Since Zero briefly talked to Iris, and he didn't need much talking to, for Xev, he needed budging. Whereas with Zero and Axl, he definitely needed that push as well down that time in the main story.

And he helps bring X and Zero back to their realities they needed to face and they, of course, face the big baddie head on. Which won't be Sigma, but I won't spoil who else ;3. Especially after this, he starts gaining a heart of gold and has another found family he can protect once he takes his powers and training more seriously. So he won't lose that second found family like he did his previous one.

Anyway, yeah that's what his general character is like in the AU, now for the Autistic headcanon. I don't know exactly where I got it from, other than I KNEW he had the vibes for it. So I slowly implemented what he would want as a stimulant, what he hyper focuses on, what his hyper fixations will be, what his sensory issues are, etc.

To which, I list that he stims with rubbing his thumbs, squishing things, vocal stimming and rocking. Either in a rocking chair or swinging. He gets a swing later on when his autism is being made more aware of in Hunter Base. He hyper focuses on what he vibes with and what he wants to do in that moment.

Anyway, what his hyper fixations/special interests would be, is he would wanna write music and play on his electric guitar. He loves stimming to softly playing and hearing the electric chords, btw. He loves doing it. He also hyper fixates on German Rock and hard rock from the 80s. Such as Def Leppard. he's a HUUUUUGE fan. Rick Savage, the late Steve Clark, and Joe Elliot are his favorite band members. He feels connected to them, and sometimes feels sad that he can't meet them, being he's in 21XX/22XX, and they're all long dead by then. Unless someone makes reploids out of them if their minds are preserved in data ;3. But, continuing on, he is OBSESSED with music theory and wants to write his own songs. Zero wants to write songs and has music theory down to an absolute tee- however, he won't know how to condense his deep love and feelings for Xev. He asks Axl for help, and they both collab and write a song together, which helps Zero gain an extra boost of experience in writing songs, which gives him the chance to write another song condensing his feelings for Xev for their wedding by writing "Only One Blue Jay in the Sky". What they both write together is called "Bird Wings Glide".

I’ll probably make another headcanon when I get the details down on the songwriting process of the two and Zero’s feelings and possibly the lyrics to what they’d be like in another post, maybe.

Another special interest he has is squishies. He loves to squish things, as stated previously, and squishies are his number 1 go to for that. He also loves pushing buttons or tapping on things. Especially when he loves making certain noises that tickle his neurodivergent A-Chip. He also loves remaking them. Repurposing them into something and making them into his own style he loves to make into art. Yeah, if you couldn't tell, Axl actually loves watching Moriah Elizabeth on Youtube lol. Don't worry about if youtube's still a thing or not, idk if I wanna figure that out for the AU at all yet lmao.

His sensory issues would be with smell and texture from coconuts, human bones (like basically touching them, especially the marrow), soapy water with grease, seeds in jam (yes, I said jam, not jelly), large crowds (especially when they touch him unprompted), sitting still without able to stim at all (I'm debating on headcannoning him with ADHD as well, haven’t decided yet), textures that feel rough (in his words, "icky", which I feel that, man) when rubbed the opposite direction of a texture he loves feeling. It's a very complicated one we both feel tbh haha

Anyway, that's all I can name at the top of my head, I'll probably make a list specifically to both his and Xev's things they have troubles with.

Which, speaking of Xev, it's still a more up in the air kind of thing, since I'm still not sure. This headcanon kind of spurs from a friend's headcanon I got from, @curtashiism specifically. They had an X that was headcanoned autistic and I really liked it cuz he had the potential to have autism, and it made the most sense to me so I figured I'd think about if I wanted the same thing for mine.

But I'm still unsure about it, really, even if I'm leaning towards wanting to do it. So, if I ever fully decide to go that route, I'll post the list of stuff he has trouble with, as well as his strengths in terms of what he loves doing, etc.

Two Graves - This was my first Cod-fic and just a short one, but I'm still really pleased with the emotional wallop I was able to pack into like 2k words.

Sparrow - It's still a wip but I love this fic. I still have a ways to go, but while I was writing this I fell in love with Ghost. I didn't really get him before but I do now. He and Morgan had crazy chemistry that I hadn't anticipated.

Night of the Wolf - I should be rewriting this novel instead of writing fanfiction tbh. It was the first novel I finished since high school and part of a really ambitious fantasy project. It's super fun and extremely self-indulgent.

Heavy Weighs the Crown - I'm pretty much guaranteed to have a good time crossing a lot of the fantasy world-building I did for NotW with the 141. Some really excellent work is in here too? Like some is close to my best (I've been growing a lot as a writer over the past few months).

Retirement Party - This one kind of blew up on me which is crazy. It's just a trope I enjoy and a dip into darker fiction. I'm not exactly going midnight with it, but it's a good stretch for me to work in some darker elements. My only other dark fic is Vienna and that one is a mess.

I'm a big fan of myself lmao. I write things I like to read. It's been fun to share things and find out that other people also like to read them though.

April 1: Boop (Writing Thoughts)

I really need to write more... I get so excited when I do even a little bit of writing or a little bit of planning. Working on the College AU yesterday has gotten me thinking about it more, and imagining more of the scenes closer to where I am, at the start, as opposed to stuff so far off in the future of the universe that it's probably not even going to be in this fic. It's feeling more real, is the point.

I have the first two scenes written and I think the chapter will finish out with the next one, basically. I have a pretty good sense of the second chapter, too. Which, like, realistically, is probably my writing for the rest of the year lol. But I've been tentatively trying to figure out chapter three.

The thing is that this fic might just end up being a repetitive series of encounters full of yearning followed by a repetitive series of fluffy established relationship scenes. Like--would that be so bad? This is about fun and indulgence after all. Nevertheless, I'm still trying to discern some kind of greater plot here, something that feels like events building on each other, and something... maybe more varied? But also let's not get too ambitious here. I don't know. It has plenty of time to stew on the backburner.

I was pretty decent at accomplishing things today although tumblr's April Fool's event was super distracting. I was barely even reading my dash, just kinda Pressing the Button. For me, it was all about the satisfaction of the little cat paw on the screen doing that little patting motion like they do. I miss my soft animals.

I can maybe kind of get to bed at an okay hour today? I still have drawer fic writing to do and I'm at a tough spot currently. I think I'm getting some kind of embarrassment or shame about it, which really defeats the point of doing something secret and just for me. But for whatever reason, this scene felt fine in my head and when I'm typing it, it just... I don't know, feels weird somehow. And honestly in the context of this fix that is REALLY saying something.

I have to get back to my WIP list stuff too because I do still care about it... but I'm also at this place where if I'm writing at all, I'm glad because it is TOUGH in my brain right now.

WIP Weekend

I caught up on Shadow & Bone and finished Witcher season 3 this weekend, which gave me so much renewed inspiration, and I got lots of words in! So I want to share a bit, as I've been quiet so much lately. Steadily closing in on the end of this fic ❤️

Then Bull's smirk dropped, and so too did her stomach. "Listen...something you should know, as an op-sec thing. Me being in Orlais, at Halamshiral, there's a possibility of one of my old clients being there."

From the way Bull said the word, Ellawyn knew he didn't mean a client from his mercenary jobs.

Her gut went cold. "How much of a chance?"

"Slim, but not impossible. I'm having Josephine check the guest list. Some of them were nobles with minor holdings, or third in line to some title or another. But you know how these things change. And it's been a few years."

Ellawyn nodded, numb and stiff, retreating automatically to the protective front of the detached, professional Inquisitor. She was just receiving an operational security report from one of her agents – that was all this was. "Did they know you were Ben-Hassrath?"

"A couple. They might've told others, though."

Nausea and an accompanying self loathing rose in the back of her throat. Who else did you share the truth of yourself with, Bull?

Just as quickly, she shoved that doubt back down. She knew the answer. She wasn't jealous of ghosts.

But he answered the question as if she'd actually asked it. "We traded secrets for favors at the time. Didn't think it'd come back to bite me in the ass – never planned I'd be there long." He shrugged. "'Course, they wouldn't know I'm Tal-Vashoth now. I don't see how it could hurt us in the negotiations, but this shit is complex. Best not to leave it to chance. Maybe we can even use it."

"How many were there, in total?" She struggled keeping emotion out of her voice.

"Maybe fifteen? Over the course of, what, three years? Something like that. Didn't keep records. It was pretty informal, nobody wanted anything traced back to 'em. Mostly short term, couple months, one or two longer than that. I ended everything on decent terms when I left. Shouldn't be anyone out there with a personal axe to grind as far as I'm aware. But hey, never good to trust ambitious nobles to keep their noses out of other people's business."

He rattled this off coolly, just giving an intelligence report as he'd likely done a thousand times, but Ellawyn was having a hard time concentrating on the details. Belatedly she nodded, knowing she was frowning and not able to meet his eye, but hoping he would assume she was trying to work out a plan.

"I might not recognize them with the masks, but they'd sure as shit recognize me, so they'll have the advantage on us. And nobody likes that. So I wanted to give you the heads-up." He tilted his horns, examining her closely-guarded reaction like he could read the thoughts behind them. He probably could. "Don't want rumors to fly before we have a chance to contain them, is all."

"Thanks," she said, trying for casual, feeling how tight her voice was but unable to stop it. "I'll have Leliana, or – or maybe Josie get ahead of it."

Bull shrugged. "Already on it. I think Red will have things well in hand. I'm meeting with her and Viv later to discuss how to mitigate any issues. Maybe we can even spin this to our advantage, who knows. I just wanted you to hear it from me." He paused and peered at her a little closer. "You good?"

What could she say? She could barely open her mouth for fear of being sick, but she couldn't lie around him. "I'm...slightly south of good, but it's not anything you need to concern yourself with."

"Is it this?" He jerked his thumb behind him toward the room they'd just left. Then his eye narrowed. "Or what I said to Viv? Because–"

"No," she said quickly. "It's not that at all."

He peered at her. Read her. He'd told her she wasn't great at bald-faced lies, but she hadn't been lying.

"That wasn't serious, back there."

"I know."

"You jealous, El?" He crossed his arms, eyebrows at an incredulous height, a slight amused smirk on his lips.

"No." She let out a small breath. "I don't care about Madame de Fer. Honestly, I don't know how to feel about this. I'm...closer to being intimidated."

"By Viv?"

"By being surrounded by your past," Ellawyn admitted with a breath. "It doesn't bother me. But the thought of people whispering behind their masks about you. What they'll think or assume when they see us together. Knowing who you are, knowing more about you than I do–"

"They don't," he cut in firmly. "They only know what I show 'em. And they'll only know what you show them, too."

Slash Ships to Get to Know Me

Thanks @autumnsup for tagging me! My brain immediately went haywire trying to think of this list. I might steal a few ships that you mentioned ;) also my definition of what constitutes slash is a pretty loose one. Some of these relationships I imagine as & instead of /, but I still froth at the mouth thinking about them so I'm including them here.

Velvet Goldmine - Jack Fairy/Curt Wild. This one isn't explicitly in the movie, but the dynamics of Jack and Curt just make it such a worthwhile relationship to explore. There's so much care and tenderness I can imagine between them, with Jack being there for Curt at one of his lowest points and the two of them working on music together. In my fic "In Berlin," I displayed their relationship as more or less platonic, but that doesn't mean I don't ABSOLUTELY LOVE the idea of them being together more intimately. There are some amazing gorgeous fics of Curt/Jack out there that I have read a million times over! (Close VG seconds are Arthur/Curt and Jack/Malcolm. Curt/Brian is important of course, and I love reading fic about it, but it's just too doomed for me to put my heart behind lol)

Our Flag Means Death - Ed Teach/Stede Bonnet. Oh my god. OH MY GOD. The way this show rotted my brain. The way these gay pirates seeped into my consciousness and won't leave. Their story so far has been so wonderful (and devastating - that goes without saying) and I'm so excited for their relationship to deepen in season 2. There's promise of more drama, more romance, and more spiciness! In the meantime, though, I'm eternally grateful to the literal tens of thousands of Ed/Stede fics that build on this love story. (Jim/Oluwande and Lucius/Pete are also incredible)

Beatles - McLennon. Okay, so this one is kind of wishy-washy for me because of the rpf element. There have been some McLennon fics that have given me everything I'd ever want and more. Then there have been fics that just made me uncomfy. This is a personal thing and not at all trying to hate on any fic writers; sometimes the spiciness gets too much when I remember John and Paul are real-life people. Regardless - McLennon is a love story. It is. They were in love, no matter how you look at it, and their relationship and how it manifested in their music and actions is such an interesting arc to observe. Ugh I just love reading their quotes about each other, seeing their studio interactions, analyzing their lyrics in songs directed at each other. And there have been so many fics that have captured this relationship between them so beautifully (whether or not it was accurate, it felt real enough to me). I've been in the Beatles fandom longer than in any other fandom, and even if I don't approach the John/Paul ship the way I do fictional ships, it brings me so much joy to learn about and read about and see art about their decades-long love story. (Another Beatles-ish relationship I've been loving lately is George/Bob Dylan. They are absolute girlies maximizing their joint slay)

Across the Universe - Jude/Max. This ship is kind of recent, though my love for the movie is years-old. On a recent rewatch, I realized that actually, no, Jude and Lucy aren't really right for each other, no matter how hopeful that ending seems for their story. And I love the dynamic between Max and Jude. And I've read some incredible fics recently covering just that. So yes, give me more Jude/Max please. And all Beatles fans should watch this movie btw. Also fans of trippy visuals and ambitious musical numbers and fun cameos (Bono? Eddie Izzard? Salma Hayek? Joe Cocker? sign me up)

Trainspotting - Renton/Sick Boy. Again a movie that has been a part of my life for so freaking long, but a ship that came a little later. I love their dynamic and how it changes through the films. In the 90s, they're kinda dicks to each other, but "he's a mate" so they tolerate each others' antics. The fics written about this era are so interesting, because on the surface there's a lot of shitty behavior to each other, but underneath there's always care and love. By the time they reach the 2010s, they've been estranged for twenty years, and yet they really do cling to each other. Part of that is just clinging to the past and trying to recreate some beautiful bygone days they're imagining, but still there's love between them. Anyway go read some Mark/Simon fic because it's always a good time.

First fic published on Ao3: House of Red Dreaming, a post-S4 Whitechapel fic following the detectives as they attend a remote team-building session which was definitely haunted. Intended to be the first in a series which would resolve the Louise Iver arc. Baby Duck was ambitious.

Last fic published: A Village Built on Bones, a Midsomer fic in which Barnaby & Winter investigate the murder of a gothic horror author. Not entirely sure when I'll be able to update it, what with Whumptober and NaNo coming up, so it's languishing a bit on the to-do list. Adult Duck is. also ambitious.

Fandom/ship I only wrote once: There are a few of these, but I'm going with Pyre (in which Owen has fire trauma) because frankly only having written once for Parkdale Haunt is an error I'm hoping to correct.

Favorite fic in most popular fandom/ship: Assuming the most popular ship I've written for is TMA's Jon/Martin (which I've not checked, but. it's Jon/Martin), Autumn, in which Martin is Missing Presumed Gone and Jon has feelings about it. It was the first Jon/Martin fic I wrote and a friend told me it made them cry at their workplace, which is the kind of review I'm proud of.

Fic I wish more people read: Going to go with Firelight's Edge/Paper Boats, in which a traumatised Nelson returns to Midsomer but can't quite make it home, and Winter tries to help while ignoring his rapidly-developing crush. Because it's my most Winter/Nelson fic so far and presumably if more people read it, that would mean that there were more people thinking about my pool noodle ship, and the more people think about the ship, the higher the odds of someone else also writing for it? This is how maths works, right? Also I think the fic's pretty good.

Fic I agonized over: I have 107 fics posted and I don't think there's a single one I didn't agonise over. So. All of them. Especially the ones I didn't post. For the purposes of this, though, between the dark and firelight, a RQG fic following Tjelvar, Edward and Carter as they're hired to seek an artefact that could bring magic back to the world. Big Bang fics are always agonising, trying to strike the balance between The Vision (TM) and what you have the time and ability to write, and this one had the additional difficulty of dealing with characters who were deeply traumatised in ways that made them behave badly towards others (and trying to treat that sensitively), while also trying to contain an adequate quest and romance arc. Might just be a case of "most recently quite agonising", though.

Fic that popped out fully-formed: prooobably blood on the beach and a wreck in the water, currently my only fic for The Secret of St Kilda, feat. Lockie hiding an injured Matthias post-S1, because if I don't see the body there's no MCD, and good luck with that in an audio medium, okay? I'd been struggling with writing and then I was poking bits of this out on my phone and the words came easily and felt good as I was writing them which. never happens. I'm scared to look at it again in case it isn't as good as I remember thinking it was.

Fic I'm proud of: uhhhhhh proud of things I've written isn't really a state that comes to me naturally but I guess I'll take In Sunlight, in which Edward searches for Tjelvar after escaping Rome. Ed/Tjelvar is a very special ship to me, as it started off as just me and two people who are now some of my fondest friends, one of whom worked with me on this fic as my Big Bang artist. It was one of two RQBB fics I wrote that year (we've since changed the rules not to let people do this because it turns out it's a fast-train to burnout, who would have thought?), so I'm kind of baffled that I finished it, and it had a great response for what will always in my head be a rarepair (though apparently has 88 works now? wild). The (69) comments assure me the fic is good which is very nice of them.

long time steddie fan (gotDAMN this community is great because we are blessed with so much content), first time participant in any sort of ST fandom event! boy-oh-boy was it a trip! This was the biggest bang I've ever participated in with over 100 fics during claims time which made it incredibly hard to make any sort of pared down list... however, I really shrieked and kicked my feet and chewed the hem of my shirt when i saw this particular fic and fell so in love i started the overly-ambitious journey of illustrating every chapter. because i'm insane. absolute delight to work with Sam on this, and i bet you'll dig their fic as much as i went coo-coo-bananas over illustrating it.

Below the divider I'll be explaining a bit of my process / reasons for doing what I've done if you've any interest!

⚠️!! WARNING !!⚠️ FIC SPOILERS BEYOND THIS POINT!⚠️

The first chapter of the fic is a Medieval AU, and I wanted to show Steve the way Eddie in the chapter sees him: golden, glowing, almost a deity-esque figure who seems untouchable in comparison to his lower status as a blacksmith's son. this was actually the second pose I attempted for steve, as the first one just wasn't cutting it for me in my preliminary sketches.

Tracked Time: 13hrs 9min

The second chapter takes place in a speakeasy during prohibition. Eddie is working class, somewhat of a goon if you will (pardon my '20s slang there) and although long hair was not in fashion during the time period, both my author and I agreed that the slicked back low-ponytail look felt right for Eddie's personality: a maverick but still somewhat within the bounds of reasonable for the time period. Steve is obviously the rich boy here, the ritzy palooka that Eddie first takes for a sucker. Unfortunately, Eddie realizes he's not so much a palooka as a sheik.

Chapter 3 is a Superhero AU, and while Steve is painted as the Metroman-esque figure of their city, Eddie is the villain, the dark smear on society. I put a lot of time into the background, as that's something I've been working on improving with my art and the strong perspective in the piece was a true challenge. The costume designs themselves were pretty simple; I wanted Steve to be sleek and streamline, a traditional superhero look. For Eddie, I wanted greaves and gauntlets and cuisses and an overall homage to medieval armor à la his love for D&D. I also struggled a lot deciding on costume color schemes. I wanted bright and pure looking for Steve, dark and muddied for Eddie but I also didn't want to just be brash about it. I ended up going through seven different color palettes until I finally settled on the ones I and my author liked best.

Chapter 4 is a Coffee Shop / Musician AU. Steve is a barista and Eddie a songwriter who patronizes the shop where he works, and wants to give him the song Eddie wrote for him. The shyness and overall vibes of like, small-town Hallmark movie longing in this chapter was beautiful and so I did the entire piece in a pencil sketch style, with a focus on Eddie in the foreground. I wanted it to have that same sort of longing that was so prominent in the chapter. I wanted to capture that wistful sort of transience that happens as the sunrise bathes the gray of night into the hues of dawn.

Chapter 5 is a "The Upside Down Never Happened" AU, set in the future. Eddie is a mechanic, and a freshly-divorced Steve rolls back into town, looking to tune up his old 1983 Bimmer. They reconnect, and the tentative, more mature relationship that grows between them is something gentle; honest and pure in a way that feels like a Hallmark movie, overlaid with all the grainy, warm nostalgia of youth. There's so much gorgeous imagery in this chapter and when you get to the vulnerability... get ready for your socks to go flying.

27. What do you listen to while writing?

To be honest, I don't listen to anything! I can't listen to anything with lyrics, because I get distracted. I'm quite verbally oriented in general, so even if the song is in a language different from what I'm writing, I still start to listen. I have also tried instrumental music, but it's hard to find anything with a suitable mood, and if it's something familiar, I get distracted again. And on the other hand, if I manage to get in the zone, I don't hear the music any more than I hear the TV or any other noises from the next room haha. So I just don't listen to anything.

3. What work are you most proud of (regardless of kudos/hits)?

I picked this one because it's a really, really hard question for me. I'm never fully happy with anything I write - even when it comes to my magnum opus, I'd say I'm only 85% happy! I am still 100% proud of that one, but the level of pride I take in my other works is always in flux. I can be super proud of something when I post it and still get so caught up on an error later on that I feel ashamed of the whole thing. On some occasions, I can also be a bit apologetic to begin with but grow prouder later on, and my feelings can change several times.

When it comes to my fics from 2023, I guess I'm pretty proud of The real deal. Not as proud as I would be if I'd been able to write more consistently, but the writing is still good and I think the story itself is compelling. While it is technically AU now since it's part of my S1-compliant series, I do think it shows that I've done a lot of research and tried to keep it as close to canon as possible (e.g. when it comes to the social dynamics of Hillerska). So in general, it's a good fic and I'm pretty proud of it.

Although TRD did already start in 2022, so out of the fics strictly written in 2023, it's definitely Last chance. It's not a complex or ambitious fic by any means, but it shows that it was a joy to write, and people got warm and fuzzy feelings from it which always makes me happy to know.

So yeah, like I said, this is a really hard question for me!

Coming Attractions!

First Monday of the month, so here we go!

As per usual, this is also an Open Question Night--anything I've posted about here or on AO3 is fair game; my askbox is always open but tonight I'll be keeping an eye on it and responding. I do take prompts, but no guarantees on how quickly I fill them.

Not a whole lot to report this month--mostly because moving took up A Lot of time/energy/etc., so I didn't get as much writing done as I would have hoped, so just a quick blitz through:

OTP Meme fills-- I'm still super behind, haha. I caught up on June, but I need to do July, August, and September for all five ships this month, so that'll be fun.

PodTogether-- It got posted! It ended up being not quite all I'd hoped it would be (our plans were a lot more ambitious than our execution, haha), but the three bits that did get finished/posted I think turned out pretty well. I do enjoy doing this event a lot; next summer should be less busy for me, too, so hopefully it'll go a little smoother/I'll get a little closer to whatever my partner(s) and I end up planning (although I think I might take Leverage off my fandoms list next time; we'll see.)

Other SW-- No real updates here, other than we at SWBB got an ask about next year's event already (signups don't open til like December!!!), so I'm going to dig up what I started last year and hopefully actually finish it so I can participate. I've been involved with that event for so long that it felt weird to only do modding/betaing/podfic and not Write for it this time. (Precipice!verse has the same update it has for the past several months. It will not die until I leave this fandom, but it hasn't been getting much/any active focus lately.)

BSG-- Signups are still open for GBB! We could use a few more artists and betas. Story detail submissions are coming in, and I'm excited for what I'm seeing. I also want to get a little more into actively working on TOB over the next few weeks/by the end of the year. It's been floating around in the back of my head for so long and I thiiiiiink I've named all of the people and patched enough of the plotholes to get started...of course, now I need to figure out exactly when/where I need to start (especially since...you know, need to introduce a bunch of OCs plus explain why Baltar ends up in a different position...so yeah XD) I do still have various crossover snippets that might get worked on (like the one I reblogged the other day; there's also the Zeb and Helo one that I thought turned out pretty well); plus The Blood of Angry Men which I do genuinely plan to write at some point, but structuring it is a complicated question XD (Zarek character study/backstory piece; mostly focused on everything that initially sent him to prison, told through the lens of him looking back on it as he faces down his execution in S4; some stuff about charisma and followers he's lost/led to their deaths; the balance between him believing in his rhetoric and wanting power/using that rhetoric to gain it...a lot of really interesting things to think about here, lol)

Les Mis-- P&J will update soon; I'm also working on Acheron which I'm super excited for. I've written snippets of dialogue for Provenance (companion to P&J) but that won't get posted until the main fic is complete (because it's probably more fun to watch Ari solve as much of the puzzle as is possible given modern-day available records/evidence before filling in some of the gaps with a somewhat more traditional-style fic, lol)

Castlevania-- Not really much to say here other than at some point I will pick up Incinctus; also when Nocturne starts airing I will probably be Very Tempted to do a more active/actual crossover with Vampire Chronicles (bookverse) because. Like. The Theatre is right there lol (I know the vampire rules are very different in the two canons; which is part of why Marius existing in Incinctus is only a quick Easter Egg cameo; also Alucard and Armand would hate each other so much lol and I love them both so I'm not...suuuuuper interested in writing about that XD) Anyway, we'll see how much Nocturne actually draws me in, but at the moment I'm looking forward to it.

...I think that about covers it! Moving is exhausting and expensive but while unpacking/setup is still going on we are Fully Moved at this point, so...yay! Hopefully next month will pick up some.

I've been low key obsessed with your blog. You've managed to cultivate a lot of interesting conversations and topics, so I wind up always coming back to scroll anything I may have missed. So, out of curiosity, what motivated you to create this blog, and what kinds of conversations and responses do you enjoy the most?

Heh. It's just my personal blog. I couldn't get my usual username, so the name is a random joke about some 1990s fandom wank I was reading about at the time. I don't really do side blogs or themed blogs usually. I just have a personal account wherever fandom has moved most recently.

What motivated me to join tumblr specifically was a promise I made to myself back in like 2003 to not be an embarrassing grandma next time we were all switching platforms and to try to be an early(ish) adopter of the next big thing instead of kvetching about it and needing to be dragged by my ear.

By now, I'm much more used to Tumblr, and Dreamwidth feels awkward and unfamiliar, which is pretty funny. I wouldn't have predicted that back in 2011.

I enjoy meta. I like it when people have long text comments about how they see a fandom or a trend in fandom. I love it when people post about bits of fandom history I don't know about. I like hearing about fandom outside of English. I like people posting personal impressions and anecdotes as much as harder facts, but I don't like appeals to emotion. I like people celebrating their rare fandoms and underappreciated fannish interests but not guilt trips.

If you really love the thing, go make the thing happen! Don't bitch about nobody else doing it for you! In fact, that's the root of a lot of what I like in fandom: the DIY, can-do attitude of community and infrastructure builders that we see in niche subcultures. I think it's been diluted a bit as fic fandom has become more accessible and mainstream, but it's still around.

Basically, I like an oldschool Livejournal and mailing list vibe. I'm in fandom for conversation and discussion and longform text.

I want that oldschool style but without the depressive wangsting about being left behind or the full dose of 'offa my lawn' that sometimes goes along with it in the genuinely oldschool spaces. I want to see younger people picking up bits of that LJ vibe because they enjoy it and it's a cultural style that can be applied to any community, not because they think they were born decades too late.

It's never too late to go consume old media or research an interest or pick up a hobby! It's never too late to create new communities, using what we like of the old and discarding the shitty bits. Somebody made a Miami Vice discord not so long ago. I was shocked but pleased.

I like it when fans who build things tell me about their cool projects, whether it's a little discord or something as ambitious as bobaboard. I like it when people ask me for help with their research or tell me the results of research they've already done. I love those "how do I find fandom history thing X?" questions that let us dive down a rabbit hole of figuring out what platform the thing would have been on and if there are any wayback links.

I guess I prefer happy things overall. We all need more happiness in our lives. But I'm not someone for whom pure squee of the "So dreamy!" *swoon* variety works very well: I express my love by analyzing and making things, and I like other fans who do the same.

I keep meaning to go back through the BTS a/b/o fic I've read and pick out all the weird gender roles and fun worldbuilding ones and write some meta about how this style of fandom led me to liking a/b/o where before I hated it. That's the kind of happy + navel gaze-y fandom thing I most enjoy. When I find someone else writing this kind of thing, even for fandoms I don't care about, I love it.

I dunno... I think it's pretty obvious what I enjoy from what I spend my time on: longform text, intellectualism, history, telling sanctimonious bullies to stuff it.

The New Site Section Has a Name and a State-of-the-Site Update

I'm excited to announce that the new section of the Silmarillion Writers' Guild site for non-Silmarillion Tolkien fanworks will be called Beyond the Silmarillion!

It was a close race and I want to thank everyone who voted and especially those of you who suggested names. Since we didn't collect names when gathering suggestions, if you are the person who suggested "Beyond the Silmarillion" and want to let me know so I can credit you for your winning name, send me an ask or email! (If you prefer to remain anonymous, that is of course fine too.)

I've also been busy this summer working on adding new features to the site. To find out more about what's in the works for the remainder of the year, check below the jump.

State of the Site Update

Back at the end of 2021, we opened a survey for SWG members to let us know what new features they would like to see added to our archive. Basically everything on the list was highly desirable to at least several someones and of interest to many, so we decided to do them all.

So far this year, we have added several new fanwork types: art, playlists, and link collections. Today, I opened beta-testing on the final two fanwork types: video and multimedia.

Video is self-explanatory, but multimedia fanworks will serve those of you who create works in multiple media that you'd like to see displayed together. Say you do a painting to go with a story. Or you post a work of meta with a link collection of suggested reading. Or a podfic recording of a story with a playlist of the songs you used in your soundtrack. Multimedia fanworks will let you display all of those elements together as a single fanwork.

As noted, beta-testing opened today. We are always looking for beta testers, so if you'd like to take videos or multimedia fanworks for a spin, let me know. I hope they are available on the site for everyone to use by the first week of August at the latest.

That will bring me to the new Beyond the Silmarillion section.

This one will be a fairly easy build compared with the multimedia fanworks (which, to be honest, have been a pain in the neck--a worthy pain in the neck but still!) I hope we will have the new site section up and running by the end of August.

Part of why we built out all of the fanwork types first is because Beyond the Silmarillion will allow you to post fanworks of all of the types available elsewhere on the archive.

After that, the only item on the survey that we still have to complete will be the ability for members to use the SWG archive to host events. This will take some information-gathering from me to see what possible event hosts would need or like to see and will likely end up being a pretty big undertaking. I'd like to see it well underway (if not complete but I'm probably being ambitious there!) by the end of the year. I also have on my to-do list a way to identify related works on the archive, e.g., if you remix another author's story or make a work of art, playlist, etc for a fic, those works can be associated with each other.
