I am DEFINITELY interested in another post ab travel journalist Emmett that's a million words long!!! but don't feel like you have to if you find me asking AGAIN super annoying x
i'm just super obsessed with this concept and idea! 🥲 your mind is brilliant 💓💓
hey babe sorry i took so long to respond! im trying to kick school’s ass rn but at the moment we’re equally matched
PLEASE you are not annoying!!! i always love yapping on here
AND THANK YOU 😭😭 you’re too sweet
emmett sadness beneath the cut
- i yapped about this so much with my dear old pal rue when i first came up with it
- im soooo inspired by tibetan pop stars by hop along because a lot of the lyrics feel very journalist emmett coded… the sort of distance and longing in the lyrics is very reflective of what he feels and what reader feels toward him in the au
- after he leaves he gets on a plane and flies off to some distant location. he has to really rough it out this time. but he doesn’t care. he’s used to having to tough it out, and this time he just wants to delve straight into it to forget all about you. a part of him treats it as just punishment too, for what he did.
- he has a local guide and interpreter, hired by the publication he works for, bring him around for this trip.
- he rows through rivers that cut through jungles, hikes through vast deserts, visits bustling city centres, drives out to rural towns. throughout all of this all he can think of is you. his guide catches that faraway look in his eye.
- the guide draws it out of emmett one night, their faces lit by campfire in the middle of vast, empty terrain. the guide tells a campfire story beneath a sky full of stars. one of love. he doesn’t say it, but emmett knows what he’s trying to say. he’s telling him to go after you. life is too short.
- that night, he writes you a note, just a piece of paper with the addresses of the stops on his journey, and a plea for you to forgive him and write.
- he’s nervous the whole journey toward the next stop. but then he arrives, and there’s a letter waiting for him.
- you write about how happy you are to hear from him again. that he’s safe. you tell him all will be forgiven if he can have it in him to come home, and stay, this time. no more running away. if he can write that promise to you, it’s all it’ll take for you to not give up on him.
- you start writing back and forth. your letters are heartbreakingly earnest. he tries to be honest and sincere, but he can’t. he tries. pages and pages of words, scribbled out smudged ink crumpled into waste paper baskets and scattered across borders in hotels, left on the tables in seedy restaurants and cafes, burned in kerosene lamps and campfires. he sends short notes, words scribbled on the back of photographs. his responses get slower, more sparse. one day, he stops writing back. he can’t find the words.
- you send a few more letters, but they slow down, and stop, eventually.
- he runs for another year.
- he tries avoiding going back to the city where he met you. but he’s called there on assignment, eventually.
- he’s walking down the street when he bumps into his old friend, the one whose house he had crashed in when he had met you.
- just seeing him makes emmett cringe. he invites emmett over for dinner. he’s reluctant, but his friend drags him back toward the house, the same house that makes his heart pound when he sees the facade of it and remembers all that went on within it,
- there’s too many people. there’s chatter, and everyone’s patting his friend on the back and congratulating him. it’s an engagement dinner, and the atmosphere is so suffocating emmett feels faint
- someone makes a quip about the lovely bride approaching. he turns to look up the stairs and sees you come down them, his heart dropping to his feet as the room cheers
- you smile at him. “hello, stranger.”
- he resents you for this, just a little. not nearly as much as he loves and misses you. you know this. you had resented him for a while, too, after he left.
- he tries, desperately, to kiss you in the kitchen. you push him away. you tell him it’s too late. you ask why he couldn’t have come home for you. you ask why he didn’t write back.
- he doesn’t know why. he just couldn’t.
- he leaves through the kitchen door and runs away, again.
this is so emo for no reason but i hope u enjoy!!!!!
