I hope you don’t mind I come with more questions!

I re-read Exile (which was the VERY FIRST fic from you I read which led me into the rabbit hole of reading all of your stuff).

How might the story have played out if the accomplice warlock had in fact told Magnus and Crew what happened?

How might the story have been altered if it was difficult if not slower to gain his memories back? Maybe also what other memory recalls you might have liked to write.

And something I have been pondering how might Magnus have approached figuring out how to help Alec get his runes back if the Silent Brothers couldn’t? I almost felt miffed on behalf of Magnus because he was so desperate to be with Alec and for things he could do.

You and your questions are a delightful highlight of my day, please never think otherwise :)

Re: If one of the warlocks had gone to Magnus to tell him what Imogen paid them to do: This could have been SO FUN! Them realizing with absolute horror that Alec is alive, somewhere unknown, without runes (what does a warlock removing runes even do to a Shadowhunter long-term? All they know is that he survived the procedure, not that he survived it long-term), with a broken parabatai bond, AND without his memory. The rush of them trying to figure out how how to find Alec, perhaps looking for weird spikes of demonic activity or maybe trying to infiltrate Imogen's people to see if they can get answers that way of where Alec is. All the while knowing that they might be too late. All this hope might turn to ash because Alec might still be dead. Thankfully he would have been decently easy to find, considering how Jace hacked the records of the apartment payments and other warlocks were already having a demonic activity spike that would have been happy to report it to Magnus if he sent a call through the Downworld about it. Them not finding him in Exile was because they didn't even know to look. With Imogen as a springboard they could have absolutely managed it.

Re: Memories: I definitely wanted to continue that thread but at a certain point the plots gotta move and my soul just wants to finish so I can start posting. A complication that I didn't get into with that but would have been really fun to play with would be Alec getting a bad memory back. His fight with Jace or his breakup with Magnus, for instance. Maybe he hides it from them but there's a backslide in trust. I also thought it would be fun if the memory sessions took way more of a toll on Alec's body, so they become these agonizing things that torture Magnus because he's essentially torturing Alec. I figured people would murder me if I continued down this too long.

Re: Runes: I didn't really have any other plans there, when things get too theoretical my brain hurts, lol, although then I keep then writing things like the collar breaking ritual or the time travel stuff so clearly I'm not very nice to my brain. I do think there could have been fun with maybe Alec's body just being so done that he really could have used Magnus there to stabilize him, maybe he gets called in halfway through and he's got to magically keep Alec going but also hold him still even though he's in pain. Knowing he can't stop this or Alec will shatter with the lost hope. Ultimately though, I do think that the Silent Brothers wouldn't tolerate Magnus helping them with the ritual, crappy as that was to cut him out after it was him healing Alec piece by piece for weeks.

It definitely could have been fun with the runes taking longer so Alec is left in limbo longer so we got more "loft is safest, stay in the loft" recovery time with Alec hiding in bathrooms when he got too overwhelmed. I liked that part, it was depressing but cute imo.

Thank you for asking! It's great stretching my Malec muscles, my brain has been very turned on to 9-1-1 and my Marked in Trust series so I haven't fallen into them lately. I have a Magnus-centric oneshot completed but I want to wait to post it until I'm in a mental place to use the comments to get me over the finish line for some of my other Malec WIPs and that's just taking a bit. Soon, I hope!

I. BTLIO has POVs from every single character. Malec, Rafe, Max, Ari, TMI Gang and even the warlock gang. It will depend upon the story.

There will be other Malec centric stories with Magnus POV.

The reason this story had only Alec POV is because of two reasons:

1. It was supposed to be a one-shot and changing POVs in one-shot isn’t ideal.

2. It’s easy to empathise for a character when you are only getting their POV. You can easily see how much Alec loves Magnus in BTLIO and his pining. But showing both their pining and love in single POV is difficult. I wanted to explore that. How to show Magnus’s love but through Alec’s POV. I’m just trying a few different writing styles through BTLIO. I hope I was able to convey Magnus’s feelings even though you don’t get a Magnus POV in the fic.

II. Magnus had talked to Rafael about Alec. Unlike Alec who barely mentioned Magnus to his kids, Magnus did, that’s why Rafael knew Alec’s name instantly through his company. That’s why he recognised him. My Rafael is kind of a bitchy character lmao. He’s very stubborn and reckless. But he loves Magnus more than anything obviously. They have a very sweet relationship.

And yes, he just wants his Bapak to be happy. Even for a few days.

III. Magnus is a famous designer. He does not have a fashion line of his own. You would know famous brand but not necessarily every designer they have. Also, Magnus specialises in traditional couture. That’s not something Ari wears a lot. So, she didn’t know about him either.

“Magnus, I’ve got him.” Cat’s voice was soft. Ever the proficient nurse. “I’ve got him. He will need a few hours of sleep, at least, but his injuries are mostly healed. He’ll be okay.” Magnus let out a breath. In front of him, Alec was laid out on his bed, body slack and positioned awkwardly as if he’d been knocked unconscious. He basically had been; Magnus knew from experience that Cat’s sedatives were strong. He reached forward, brushing a few stray bits of hair out of Alexander’s face. Gently, slowly, he cupped the arm that had been broken, feeling his stomach clench uncomfortably as he moved it as delicately as he could into a more comfortable position. It was fine now. Alexander was fine now. But before, when it had happened… “My dear Alexander,” he murmured, stroking Alexander’s arm lightly with the tips of his fingers. His skin was warm, probably warmer than it should have been, as if he had a fever. Cat smiled. “He’s strong. Resilient.” “He’s had to be.” Magnus knew even as he said it that it was an understatement. For all that he had done to try to protect his Shadowhunter, there was so much that Magnus hadn’t been able to do, so much that he hadn’t been able to fix.

Especially now, he reminded himself, shivering. 

Now he was as good as useless.

He pressed his fingers more firmly into Alexander’s wrist, feeling for the steadiness of his pulse. The quiet, fluttery thumping was a little fast, but healthy. An anchor. Alexander was his anchor, his rock, even while asleep. The thought should scare him. But somehow he couldn’t muster the energy for it. Cat tilted her head at him knowingly. “I rigged the room,” she told him. “You’ll be able to hear Alec’s breathing and pulse from anywhere in the house.” She rose, packing away the remaining bits of her medical equipment with an air of strung out fatigue. “You don’t have to sit here and watch him.” This was punctuated with a pointed look at Magnus. “You can eat. And rest. And have some time, to yourself.” Magnus nodded. “I suppose that I should sleep.” “Can I trust you to do that?” Cat asked, and the question was only halfway a joke. Both of them knew that there had been times in Magnus’s life where he had answered that question with a negative.

He knew that if he asked her, Cat would stay. But he also knew that she was eager to get back to the child in her care. “Yes, Cat, thank you. Now please, go home to Madzie.” She sighed, reaching out with one free arm to wrap Magnus in a quick, tight hug.  He accepted it, breathing her in and trying to pretend that it was comforting, instead of a reminder that he could no longer feel the buzz of her magic mingling with his, quick and smooth and frazzled as it always was. Had been. He knew that she could feel the difference too. “Take care of yourself, Magnus. Okay?” She leaned back to look him in the eye. “Call me if you need me.” “I will,” he lied. Her lip turned up wryly. “Goodnight, Magnus.” A quick peck on his cheek, and then she opened a portal in one fluid movement and stepped through. Magnus dropped his shoulders wearily. Alec’s deep and even breathing punctured the darkness in waves, sure and regular against the silence in Magnus’s mind. It was a comfort, but also a reminder. He sunk down to perch on the edge of the bed. “Alexander…” He couldn’t finish the thought. What could he say?  I’m sorry that I couldn’t save you? Thank you for being okay?

My condolences, for your unfortunate luck in falling in love with a half-demon storm of man?

Instead, he settled for leaning forward to brush his lips against Alexander’s forehead.

“You’re here,” Magnus said. He poured himself another two fingers of his drink, taking a quick shot of it before spinning the glass idly in his hand. “I’m surprised that you came.” The living room was dark, fragmented only by the lamp beside him and the one across from him. Bathed in that orange-tinted circle of light, sitting on the couch as if he’d never left, Ragnor smiled. Magnus looked back down at his hands. “I had wondered if you might have been…” “An apparition of your magic?” Ragnor’s lip quirked up again. “No,” he said, shifting his hands one over the other, palms up, as if he himself were about to cast a spell right then. “Your magic always did protect you well, but I’m afraid that even it can’t quite get my image right.”

Magnus snorted. He took another sip, letting his gaze linger on the amber liquid as it made rocky waves in his glass. He resolutely ignored the did. “Perhaps I could cut back on the martinis.” Ragnor smiled. “My dear friend,” he said, leaning forward, even as Magnus shuffled forward to meet him in the middle; he grasped the corner of Magnus’s chin gently between his thumb and forefinger. “You always were a foolish, foolish drunk. And—“ he added, leaning back again with a near audible stretch, “we both know that that abomination of a drink is not even close to a martini.” Magnus nodded absently, but couldn’t muster a retort. Instead he reached again for the silence, feeling needy for its reprieve. Unexpectedly, and rather uncomfortably, he was met with the jumbled noise of the cars going by on the road outside his window. He had put up wards to seal the sound out of his loft-- hadn’t he? He must have removed them. After all, time hadn’t been moving in the most linear fashion, recently. Just one more unfortunate consequence of war. “When you met me.” Magnus inhaled raggedly and let it go in a rush. “I was…” “A tremendously traumatized young man.” Ragnor’s voice was gentle. Magnus spun a ring around his finger. “Yes.” The light from the jewelry cast out around him in little spirals and dots of gold, reflecting off the window behind Ragnor’s image. “Nevertheless, I was… I was Asmodeus’s son. I am Asmodeus’s son.” Ragnor nodded, raising a pointed eyebrow. In the back room, Alec snorted and shuffled, blankets rustling and breathe speeding up before settling. “I fought so hard,” Magnus whispered, mostly to himself. “I tried so hard to be better than him.” I tried to be good, he almost added. I tried not to be destruction, but still I named myself in its honour and I walked in its wake. Ragnor’s eyes glinted. “You have always been a better man than him, Magnus.” What Ragnor meant was, you didn’t need to try. What Ragnor meant was, you’ve always been good. They’d played this game, had this back and forth, hundreds of times in hundreds of different ways over the course of Magnus’s long life. In speeches, in looks, in cups of tea, in drunken monologues and in moments that Magnus would never have let anyone else see. They didn’t need words anymore. Ragnor, who had found his own name in the concept of endings, had always looked at Magnus’s destruction and seen hope. “What would I do without you?” Magnus asked. It was automatic, a question that he had asked aloud to his friend many times before. This time, the implications hit him with a suddenness that left him winded. He choked on the urge to try to snatch the words back, take them deep into his chest where the coldness of the night around them couldn’t bear witness to them. Ragnor seemed to sense the delicacy of Magnus’s sudden anxiety, and left a soft pause before speaking. “You would be even more of a miserable wretch than you are now.” That startled a laugh from him. It bubbled out of Magnus from somewhere desperate and a little animalistic, a hysterical noise that he was glad that no one was around to hear. In the back, Alec’s heart rate was steady, though he mumbled something in his sleep. “What will I do without my magic?” Magnus asked, once he’d composed himself again. It came out like a plea. “I have nothing left, Ragnor.” Please, my oldest friend, tell me that I’m wrong again. Ragnor shook his head, some of his hair falling slightly forward to lay against his left horn. “You know that that’s not true.” Magnus twisted his ring again, watching the light spin over and over. A never ending, never breaking series of colour. “I’m going to die.” This time Ragnor rolled his eyes. “You were always going to die, my incorrigible friend. If you’re forgetting that, then perhaps I should take the whisky away from you.” Tears sprung, unbidden, to prick at Magnus’s eyes. Spitefully, he let them. Screw composure. Not now, not after this. His father had already taken his dignity.

Ragnor shuffled forward, leaning to pick up Magnus’s hand where he’d been reaching again for his glass. Ragnor caught it and held it firmly between both of his own, familiar warmth somehow seeping through to Magnus’s skin in a way that he didn’t want to understand. He didn’t care anymore how he could be with his friend, only that he could. Still, he stiffened. The last time his hand had been held was when he’d clung onto Alexander’s earlier that day; when his lovely, direly injured soldier had been lying there, on the concrete, gasping for air and looking like- “You will not die alone.” Magnus swallowed as the tears finally sprung forward, clouding his vision and choking up his throat. He raised his unclaimed hand and grabbed at his collar, feeling the need to claw the fabric off of himself. “I know.” His voice was hoarse, but steady. He thought of Catarina, with her freely given warmth and infinite understanding. And Raphael, troubled though the boy may be; though the thought that he was no longer able to support his son only caused him to dig his nails deeper into his collar. And Alexander… He glanced up at Ragnor, finally, who looked at him fondly and squeezed his hand. “No, you don’t,” Ragnor corrected gently. “But you will, my friend.” Ragnor’s gaze was intent, and Magnus found himself unable to dissolve the intensity in his words. His friend had always had him pinned like that. He supposed it was his weakness. “There will come a time when you will truly understand the magnitude of love that you have been able to build around you, Magnus. And then you will never feel alone again,” Ragnor smiled, revealing a rare flash of his teeth, “With or without me around to bang it into your stubborn head. That I can promise you, if nothing else.” Magnus smiled wetly, tasting salt on the edge of his tongue. He’d missed Ragnor, more than he had ever let himself think possible. “Your promises do have a pretty good track record,” Magnus conceded. Ragnor winked, and then paused, shifting his chin up to look behind Magnus’s head. His expression softened. “Here comes one promise right now.” Alexander. Magnus turned, to see that Ragnor was right-- Alexander stood in the doorway of his bedroom. The bed-rumpled Shadowhunter was half-slumped against the door frame and rubbing at his arm, watching Magnus with a curious expression. “Magnus.” His tilted head filled in the inflection, the question clear in his eyes. Magnus smiled. “I’m coming to bed, Alexander,” he assured, nodding at him. His heart constricted heavily. “Just give me one moment to finish up here, hmm?” Alexander nodded, dazed and tired. But he paused, for one electrified second, to hold eye contact with Magnus; then turned, as if he hadn’t just split Magnus’s heart open for that one infinite moment, to head back to bed. Leaving Magnus once again alone in the darkness. “My apologies for the interruption,” Magnus said to the emptiness, once he knew for certain that Alexander was out of earshot. He turned back to the couch where Ragnor had been sitting, knowing already in his heart that it would be empty. He had known as soon as the warmth had left his hand. “You’re right, though,” Magnus whispered anyway. “Like I said, my dear cabbage, you always give the best advice.”

After an unsurprising beat of silence, Magnus rose wearily, joints crackling in protest. He shuffled himself quietly into the bedroom, shedding his clothes as went until he was wearing nothing but his shirt and briefs. Lifting the blanket, he snuggled in gently next to Alexander, near enough to feel his warmth but careful to keep a safe distance from his injuries. “I miss you,” he told the ceiling. Inexplicably, foolishly unable to let go of his end of the conversation. He rubbed at an eye childishly, angry with his tears. “I wish you were still here with me for this.”

But if there was anything that Magnus had learned in his long life, it was that wishes weren’t worth much.

In his sleep, Alec grabbed for him, tugging Magnus gently toward his chest. Magnus smiled cautiously. Perhaps, he thought, he could allow the heat and closeness to make him feel safe. Just for one night.

Pressing another fleeting kiss to Alec’s forehead, Magnus also let himself imagine that he could see the glinting flash of a horn from behind his door frame- and perhaps the briefest glimpse of an approving smile. Then he closed his eyes, and let himself fall into sleep.

WIP Wednesday

It is Wednesday, my dudes!

I am in a weird place rn where my mood swings wildly, which is honestly kind of annoying, and not very good for my productivity levels. But! I got a bunch of chores done the last few days and I get a new oven tomorrow. So. Some things are looking up.

Fic-wise... They Say is still in progress. I think I've got all the text for chapter 28, just needs editing, and chapter 29 is coming along too. Chapter 30 still eludes me, unfortunately. I'm hoping it will be easier once I have more of 29 done.

Actually, I might move things around a bit, so that parts of 28 will be moved to 29 and some of the things I have planned for 29 will be in 30 instead, plus of course the vague notes I already have for 30. Might be less daunting, then. And also 28 and 29 are long.

I've actually also worked a little on the sequels I've got planned for Hiding From Your Home, though mostly in the sense that I've been typing up the notes I had in my notebooks so I have it all together in a word document.

Fandoms: goodness. I don’t think we have enough time to unpack all of that. but long story short: my first fandoms were Harry Potter & iCarly. I was on FFnet when ‘lemons’ & character conversations with the author were a thing on the A/N section haha (+ I’ve been on Tumblr for over a decade)

Two-shot: I don’t think I have any. My mind works in an all-or-nothing capacity; it’s either one-shot or ridiculous multi-chapters. (the closest is a three-shot, which is this Leverage/Stargate fusion I’m currently working on as a break from my other multi-chap giants)

Most popular multi-chapter: hmm. the one with the highest kudos count on ao3 is an Arya Stark-centric ficlet collection (yes, I’m a huge ASoIaF fan. no, I don’t like the TV show). but the one that really felt like it blew up (at least in terms of reader feedback) is this Shadowhunters fic I wrote back when I had my brief-yet-intense Malec hyperfixation. it’s On Hiatus because I lost my grip of the source material, but I’m still hoping to return to it someday. people still message me about it, and I really want to do right by them.

Actual worst part of writing: losing momentum. I am really not a prolific writer, and it’ so hard because my plot bunnies are like dust. they come out of nowhere & only accumulate when left unattended. sometimes, all I wanna do is shake myself so the stories come out without me having to go through the bloody & taxing process of actually making the words go.

How you choose your titles: funny thing, really. I’m almost always unable to start drafting without a working title & summary. I hate that I am that way, but that’s how it’s always been for as long as I can remember. now, choosing my title is a tricky process in and of itself. I need it to be as perfect as I can make it. it has to be SYMBOLIC and filled with FORESHADOWING (spoiler: I fail at this objective about 73% of the time), so I usually just end up parking myself in a corner & staring at nothing. sometimes, I have my phone with me to google synonyms and etymology of words.

Do you outline: yes! I’m a compulsive outliner. my outlines have outlines.

Ideas you probably won’t get to but wouldn’t it be nice: I have a lot, I’m afraid. far too many. (the Stargate ones will be featured in this blog every now and then, anyway, so you’ll get them when I share them heh).

one thing I’ve all but given up on is this Bleach AU that I’ve plotted for H50/McDanno. I started the first installment for what was supposed to be a series, but I doubt I’ll return to it anytime soon.

Callouts @ yourself: stop. entertaining. new. fic. ideas. (and no, not every OC / side character has to have a detailed backstory. it most likely won’t come up in the story, anyway)

Best writing traits: I’m apparently good at making people cry? I really just love angst. I had a reader once who told me that they had to lock themselves in the bathroom to hyperventilate after one particular narrative revelation. I actually got sincerely worried.

Spicy tangential opinion: writing in first-person POV should be for skilled writers. I know that it can be a great tool when used properly, but every time I open a fic and see ‘I’, “my”, “me”, or “mine”, I backtrack so fast I break the sound barrier.

Malec in late 2B

It's been *checks watch* three years and I've finally calmed down enough to try and untangle my feelings about the end of 2B in a coherent way.

1) Alec's decision not to tell Magnus about the Soul Sword. I've worked through my thoughts regarding that in this fic already where I go into Alec's reasoning for it. The tldr of which is that a) Alec consciously made the decision not to tell Magnus instead of running out of time to decide, b) he actually had good reasons for that and made that decision with Magnus's and the Downworld's best interests at heart and c) ultimately his love for Magnus was the very reason he didn't tell him because if he had cared about sparing Magnus's feelings a little less he would have told Magnus about the Soul Sword on condition that Magnus can't tell his people, damn the guilt Magnus will feel when warlocks die because they weren't forewarned.

2) Magnus's reaction to finding out. Magnus flips his shit, basically, lashes out, is deliberately hurtful and doesn't really listen to Alec's reasons for his decision. This is both an understandable and an ic reaction because Magnus is a very emotion-driven character and what he just learned is drastic. Could there have been a more graceful way to handle this revelation? Certainly. But it's nothing I would just expect from any given character. You'd have to be exceptionally level-headed to keep your cool in such a situation and I don't fault Magnus for not being that. His reaction was very human.

Alec gets points deduction for his line “Let's not make this personal” because dude, do you know your boyfriend at all? Have you realized that emotional compartmentalization isn't his strong forte? This line just angers Magnus more. (Alec also gets points deduction, with extreme prejudice, for trying to shush Magnus because what is wrong with you, man. I mean, this might just be a personal hang-up of mine but isn't that gesture patronizing as hell? Anyway.) On the other hand Alec gets some points for not going after Magnus. When I first watched that I thought it was very strange and kinda weird but in hindsight it is obviously the right choice. Magnus needed time and space to deal and Alec realized that trying to go after him and talk it out then was pointless and would have only angered Magnus more.

3) Magnus's reaction to Alec seeking him out because of Max. Admirable. Magnus puts all his (very understandable) anger aside to rush to the Lighwood family's aid. It doesn't matter that he can't help in the end, he is there as emotional support despite the frosty atmosphere between him and Alec. It is the decent thing to do but not everybody would have shown such kindness in his shoes. 10/10.

4) Magnus contemplating if he should take the Seelie Queen's offer aka sappy Malec flashbacks. I'm gonna place half the blame on show writers and half the blame on Magnus himself because, bro, this is not how you make a strategical decision for your people. Not even once is Magnus shown contemplating the repercussions of his decision for the warlocks or Valentine or the future of the Downworld. He only mopes about his boyfriend betraying his trust, basically. And I mean! I understand he's hurting a lot! And I understand people can't just turn off their emotions! But a good leader should be able to put his own emotions aside at least for a short time when an integral decision about his people has to be made, and quickly! And in that regard Magnus, uh, fails, apparently.

Again, I think half the blame lies with the show writers who wanted cute Malec flashbacks and generally fail at portraying inner Downworlder affairs if they don't serve the shadowhunter-centric plot. But I can't just yell “ooc behavior!!” and shrug it off because this isn't exactly ooc behavior for Magnus. Magnus is a very emotion-driven character who fails at separating personal and political matters. That's a theme. I point no further than the whole Camille-thing where he turned a blind eye to her bleeder dens because he felt personally indebted to her, and only stopped her when Raphael's life was at stake. So yeah... 0/10.

Full disclosure, I think there is a different way to read these scenes. Maybe Magnus wasn't just nursing his broken heart and missing the point. Maybe what he was actually contemplating was what he'd been fighting about with Luke before, namely if Alec can even be trusted as a person or if he's too much a shadowhunter to ever deserve their faith and cooperation because he will always treat Downworlders as lesser, because he's as racist as the Clave. In that case it would make sense for him to remember their private 1:1 interactions, to reassess Alec's character as a whole. But it would also mean that the conclusion he reached is that Alec is as corrupt as the rest of the Clave, and that would make them getting back together without ever talking about this... even more messed up than it already is! But I'm getting ahead of myself. Anyway, needless to say that I don't interpret it this way.

5) Magnus breaking up with Alec. To me personally (and to Alec) the breakup makes no sense. Magnus and Alec have different stances on, like, the implications of their relationship (and I'm emotionally wired like Alec is, at least in that regard). What I mean is this: Why does Magnus feel the need to break up with Alec? He's not an idiot, he knows that just because he breaks up with Alec his feelings for Alec will not miraculously evaporate as well. He'll be as emotionally compromised as he was before. And yet he says, “The only thing holding me back from [making difficult decisions to ensure the survival of my people] is you.”

Here's the thing. When Alec decides not to tell Magnus about the Soul Sword he does so in his capacity as the Head of the Institute, taking (almost) no account of his role as Magnus's lover. He is able to do that because he can compartmentalize between these two roles in an extreme way and therefor his relationship status has no influence on his decision. (Sure, not being with Magnus wouldn't have provided extra incentive to tell him, but work with me here. What I mean is that if Alec had rationally decided to tell Magnus about the Soul Sword, he would have made that same decision whether he was with Magnus at that point or not.) What did influence his decision making process were his feelings for Magnus, and these remain unchanged regardless of their relationship status.

Magnus has an entirely different stance. To him being in a relationship implies a certain kind of loyalty that must be maintained at all times. If their roles had been reversed I don't doubt that Magnus would have told Alec about the Soul Sword immediately because of said loyalty, and he would have thought it through for exactly zero seconds beforehand. He expected the same thing from Alec and that's why he feels so betrayed when he realizes that Alec kept it from him. This is why Magnus feels the need to break up with Alec: to disengage from this loyalty that keeps him from making decisions with only the warlocks in mind. Magnus's decision making hinges on their relationship status and the loyalty it demands, not his feelings for Alec.

Alec doesn't understand this. That's why he tells Magnus that he can have both: Alec, and the freedom to make the best choices for the warlocks, to act like the High Warlock of Brooklyn. Alec wouldn't hold it against him if he made the best decisions for his people while they are together because Alec, too, did have Magnus and made decisions as the Head of the Institute. But Magnus works differently. He'd feel like he's betraying Alec if he makes High Warlock of Brooklyn decisions while still being with Alec. And that's why he breaks up with Alec, and that's why it makes sense for Magnus to break up with him.

6) Magnus's behavior afterwards. Oh my god where do I even start.

--- Magnus being a petty bitch? Hell yeah.

--- Magnus hiding behind the Seelie Queen and running after her like he's her lap dog? Hell no. Wtf did I just watch!! Even better, he leaves Raphael behind? And Raphael then tells Izzy that Magnus was his ride and he's effectively trapped at the Institute because the sun is shining brightly outside?? I'm sorry, what. The Downworld just divorced the shadowhunters with a side of “hmm maybe we'll stop caring about the Accords as well in the near future” and Magnus leaves his Raphael behind? This is unacceptable!! I don't even know what to say to that!!

--- This has surely been discussed before but it needs to be said. Magnus implementing an anti-portal ward around New York that incinerates any angel-blooded creature that tries to pass it and not telling Alec about it. They hear about it from Luke instead and since Jace's reaction is immediately telling the shadowhunter extra next to him to stop shadowhunter movement in and out of the city immediately it is heavily implied that some shadowhunters already died thanks to this ward – since there are apparently troop movements in and out of the city that need to be stopped. (Which was to be expected! Sure, they know Valentine won't leave the city before he's got his hands on what he believes to be the mortal mirror locked away at the Institute, but he could surely be regrouping outside the city. Sending patrols into the near vicinity is the sensible thing to do.) Shadowhunter casualties due to the ward are further implied by Jace then leaning heavily on the desk and half-whispering to himself “No more shadowhunters die today.” Which makes sense. The patrols in question would have just vanished with no chance to report back what happened to them so they were probably assumed dead by Valentine's hand.

The point: Wtf Magnus. He must have been aware this could and would happen. The way I see it there are only two possible explanations: Magnus deliberately did not tell the NY Institute shadowhunters a) because he thought word might get around to Valentine or b) out of pettiness. And considering that knowing about the ward doesn't magically un-trap you and only means you will not cross it and therefore remain alive but contained, a) doesn't really make sense. The ward wasn't designed to lure Valentine to his death. It was designed to keep Valentine in the city so the other Downworld factions could hunt him down, and the ward will continue to do so even after Valentine learns of its existence. There s no harm in him knowing about it while there is a lot of harm in the NY shadowhunters not knowing about it because they will just die, for nothing, while trying to find Valentine. Magnus willingly risking that on the off-chance that Valentine walks into the ward at random is not his style at all. This leaves pettiness as motivation and sure, Magnus is petty, but not at the cost of so many casualties. This is so painfully ooc that I just can't!!

7) Their “reconciliation.” As you might have already guessed from those quotation marks: Thanks, I hate it. That adequately sums up my feelings on the matter. Don't get me wrong, the scene itself is lovely, I guess. But, content! They have this huge issue and they just don't talk about it! Magnus never learns of Alec's (legit) reasons for not telling him about the Soul Sword. Alec apologizes for.. what exactly? Doing something he was convinced was the right thing? And they never realize their differences in decision making which is even worse! This whole drama stemmed from the fact that they view the obligations that come with being in a relationship differently where their responsibilities as leaders are concerned. This is bound to become a problem again in the future!! And they just! dont! talk about it! aaaahhhhhhhh!!!! how!!!!!! are you adults or what!!!!!!! *sigh* just... –ꝏ /10

8) Aftermath. Oh right, this will of course not become a problem again in the future because Magnus loses his job. How neat.

Leaving the salt aside though I have to admit that I.. actually think the warlocks weren't entirely in the wrong in sacking Magnus. And before you kill me, hear me out. The first thing to note is that neither Raphael nor Luke get sacked for their decision to side with the Seelie Queen. Why is that? Because vampires and werewolves are fundamentally differently organized than warlocks. Warlocks have an international infrastructure. There's the Council, the Spiral Labyrinth, and stuff. Vampires and werewolves have their local clans and packs, and nothing more. Magnus has superiors. Raphael and Luke do not. After the Seelie Queen makes that deal with Valentine she condemns every Downworlder, except those located in New York, to death. Raziel's wish will kill every Downworlder on earth and only those in the Seelie Realm are safe. And as Magnus says in early 2x19

If Valentine had succeeded then literally all the other warlocks in the world would have died! Yes, the fact that the Seelie Queen threw them all under the bus isn't Magnus's fault, but

it was to be expected. Luke and Raphael both warn Magnus not to trust the Seelie Queen, that she has her own agenda and it's to rule over the Downworld, and that's why both Luke and Raphael were hesitant to accept her deal.

So I think it's pretty understandable why the other warlocks kicked Magnus out on his ass. In their eyes he would have been semi-complicit in their collective demise if Valentine had succeeded, having sided with the one who betrayed the Downworld. It doesn't matter that Magnus's choice means the warlocks at least wouldn't have gone entirely extinct if Valentine had won. It doesn't matter that the Seelie Queen would have made that deal with Valentine whether the other Downworlder factions had sided with her or not. (She had Simon in her Realm who could create new vampires, she probably would have kept Maia for new werewolves, and warlocks can be made by uuhh unethical means. What better Downworld than one that's never known anything but the Seelie Queen's uncontested reign? Yes, she absolutely would have let them all die.) None of that matters to the warlocks. They feel like Magnus betrayed them as a community and that's why they sack him.

Okay, so now we know why it made (in-universe) sense for the warlocks to fire Magnus. Make no mistake though – I don't approve of this reasoning. It's short-sighted and not very practical, and also unfair. Better save some of your species than none, right? Fine, Magnus should have informed the Council and stuff about what was going on so they could make their own deals with the Seelie Queen if they want to.. but then, do we even know if he did or didn't inform them? No. Any further discussion on this point is just poking in the dark so let's move on.

I did say that I think the warlocks weren't entirely in the wrong in dismissing Magnus from his job, though. Let me explain.

a) Magnus's decision to side with the Seelie Queen or remain sided with the Institute would have not made a difference regarding the whole Valentine-thing, right? Things would have played out exactly the same: Warlocks create anti-portal ward, Val makes a deal with the Seelie Queen and gets to Alicante anyway. The survival of the Downworld depended on Clary stabbing Valentine to death before he made the wish, and that remains unchanged no matter Magnus's decision. What Magnus's decision would have influenced (if this goddamn show knew what continuity is, lol) is what came after. Where does siding with the trigger-happy Seelie Queen, who made no secret of gunning for war with the Clave, leave the warlocks? On the Clave's bad side, that's for sure. Especially if things had escalated between the seelies and the shadowhunters (which they do in the books!!). In the show.. things just go back to how they were before the Downworld's little fail-rebellion. Either because the Downworld and the Clave mutually decide to just pretend none of it ever happened (since the Consul was exposed as a Circle Member, which, awkward) or, which I believe is more likely, because 3A focuses on The Owl Mystery and not on foreign policy and this show just sucks when it comes to including anything not strictly-plot-relevant. In any case!! Magnus's decision to side with the Seelie Queen should have had severe repercussions for the warlocks and their standing with the Clave aka dramatically worsened it, and for nothing (since nothing came of the “rebellion” and it's honestly doubtful how many warlocks would have wanted a full-on war with the shadowhunters anyway. They seem pretty good at laying low and doing their own thing). So in the long term siding with the Seelie Queen wasn't / wouldn't have been a strategically good decision (if it wasn’t followed up by a war of independence, which it wasn’t) and a legit reason to get fired.

b) More importantly, in 3x09 Lorenzo says to Magnus, “I took this position because you couldn't handle it. You let your heart dictate your actions and that will be your downfall,” which I always took to mean – since Lorenzo was god knows where when all of 2B happened – that the gossip in the warlock community is strong, and has it that Magnus only sided with the Seelie Queen as revenge for Alec not telling him about the Soul Sword / something relating to their breakup. No matter how this opinion formed in the community... *glances at 4)* they're not wrong? And this is definitely a legit reason to get fired.

So where does this leave us? I don't approve of the Council firing Magnus for the reason they did because it was a dumb reason. When I look at Lorenzo – lazy, self-centered, unwilling to actually do anything when push comes to shove – I don't think Magnus should be fired because he's obviously the much better choice as High Warlock. And I don't even think that siding with the Seelie Queen was, per se, a wrong choice. But the way Magnus made that choice left much to be desired and was a clear lapse in leadership, one where a dismissal would have been justified. And this should have been addressed in a constructive way so he can learn from his mistake.

Also I just want to say thanks for existing ❤️❤️ I love ur blogs and ur takes theyre amazing, I never was properly involved with 5he shadowhunters fandom when it was running bc A. I saw a clalec shipper and ran for the hills(What was that horrific thing) and B. The show is objectively terrible, I really love the fact that you say everything you want to say taking no prisoners!!! Sparing no fragile feelings!!! And I wanna say that I'm so sorry that you have to deal with so many insensitive asshole anons giving you shit

I'm gonna be honest that while I love them both equally, alec was the one I resonated with the most as a lesbian (magnus was the one I fancied ahahah) but I hadn't realised properly how centred Alec was in fandom spaces. Its almost like the ranking of favourite characters goes 1. Alec 2.malec and 3. Magnus, in how Magnus' emotions and boundaries are secondary to the maintaining of alecs relationship with him

I'd seen wisps of something similar in the marvel fandom but hadn't carried over how fans can ununtentially use characters of colour as mere rungs on the ladder to their success, even and especially within the relationship. I don't see this much with sambucky but back when SamSteve was popular Sam was often reduced to Steve's pet therapist who has no aspirations in life other than being Steve's boyfriend.

This is fan behaviour but just wanna say don't let the bastards get u down honey!! ❤️❤️❤️

i can't talk about sambucky and samsteve cuz i haven't actually been involved with the marvel fandom for years now, so i haven't read a lot of fic, and even now the very few tfatws blogs that i follow are all sam-centric cuz im trying to avoid stressing myself with Even More Fandom Buffonery lol, but my educated guess would be that every fandom with an interracial ship is going to have racist tropes, especially because Bucky Stans™ as a group are some of the most racist fandoms ive ever seen. it's actually one of the things that turned me off the MCU fandom, because bucky actually was and is one of my faves, but boiiiiiiiiii

i think most clalec shippers left the fandom long ago (they were never a big group anyway, but you know, at this point they haven't had reason to be active anymore, since most of their thing was to harrass malec shippers and yell about how clalec would prevail, and that fight is already over and done with lol)

Hey, so I have tried reading (and listening to the audio book) the whole mortal instruments series and can't seem to get past book 2. I'm just really not into book Clary for some reason. I loved the show and would like to read more malec stuff, so what book should I try starting with and in which order should I read them?

I have been saying this for over a year...Season 4 would have been a huge Magnus and Malec centric season...why I say this...is because season 3 was to finish off the Jonathan and Clary arc...following the books...which obviously the plan...BUT SEASON 4 WAS THE SEASON OF OPPORTUNITIES!!

Also...let’s be honest and talk business here...like so many shows...when you got they “It” couple...shows will tend to draw more attention and arcs to them. That’s just business. Not trying to diss any other ships. It’s just is. Ratings is money. But also, with a season 4...the other characters and ships will still have more opportunities and development. It’s a win for everyone.

BECAUSE trust me, I read the books...Asmodeus and Magnus NEVER got this much contents...this was the show opening doors. CAN YOU IMAGINE WHAT COULD HAVE BEEN? Asmodeus is a prince of hell, brother to Lucifer, and THE KING OF EDOM...I had no idea with the Lilith vs. him...he is a fallen angel. She was a wife of Adam. She was made by association with a fallen angel. She actually a mundane turned greater demon. In the Shadow World or the Mortal Instruments universe...he out ranks her. She even in the books, was romantically or sexually involved with a Shadowhunters. Don’t get me wrong. She is powerful and evil, but she doesn’t out rank him. They both rule Edom.

Asmodeus in the books, literally took over and destroyed Edom. Edom uses to be another dimension with their own mundanes, Downworlders, and Shadowhunters...he destroyed them all. Why would anyone be afraid of Jonathan? He really isn’t much of threat. Jonathan vs. Asmodeus? Asmodeus would destroy Jonathan with a snap of his fingers...And Magnus is his son. That means possibilities. And Magnus being Asmodeus’ son means he is... “ironically” has angel blood. Not from a cup like the Shadowhunters...but he was born with. Get the irony? Can you imagine Magnus’ “potentials”? Seriously, that’s how CC wrote it. It’s in the books. Why not explore this?

I hate everyone involved in the cancellation of Shadowhunters...because they took all the potentials arcs from Magnus, Alec, Malec...Izzy, Luke, etc...

The shadow world is so big...there’s so much that could have been...this cancellation will always haunt me.

Magnus as a prince is so underrated. Like he’s a prince of hell yeah but ppl who use that troupe generally write dark!magnus content that makes me want the death. BUT Magnus as a fairytale prince, Alec as a knight maybe, or a prince from another kingdom. Forbidden romance. The drama of politics. Catarina is Magnus’s advisor because of course she is, and Dot is like an oracle for the kingdom. Ragnor is the king, he’s not Magnus’s father but he took him in when Magnus was young and since Ragnor has no children he’s next in line for the throne. Asmodeus is dead in this au because I said so. Ragnor..........doesnt really have the personality of a king, he’s a little reclusive and a lot of the kingdom speculates that he’s gone crazy. Magnus, on the other hand, is BELOVED. He’s always got a little troupe of women (and men) sorta following him around. People ask Ragnor for Magnus’s hand in marriage like, every day. He spends a lot of time in the kingdom, traveling around and talking to people, helping. If we think of Alec as a prince from another kingdom....Robert and Maryse bring their children to Ragnor’s kingdom, trying to broker peace between the two of them, some kind of alliance. They want to marry off Izzy to Magnus, and Magnus and Izzy get along GREAT! But not romantically. But Izzy’s brother..............Magnus is........interested. Alec is also........interested. Maybe there’s some secret kisses, a little bit of a cat and mouse game. Alec’s next in line for the throne, so his parents don't want him to get married to Magnus, they want him home to rule their kingdom. Notably, Alec and Magnus don’t care. I won't even get to the other parts of this ask if i don't SHUT UP so basically they get married and rule together, Izzy rules the idris kingdom, everyone is happy and malec are in love. 

MERMAID MAGNUS!!! THIS IS BLESSED!!!! ALSO YES, NB MERMAIDS! TRANS MERMAIDS!! Fairytale societies in general with completely different concepts of gender to what humans have! I don’t have a huge plot idea for this one like I do for the prince au BUT some ideas! 

Mermaid Magnus and human Alec. 

Magnus being injured by a ship, or by hunters. He was probably trying to save someone, maybe a young mermaid (madzie???) that had been captured on the ship. He washes ashore, bleeding and passed out and Alec finds him

Idk who Alec is in this. Maybe he lives by the beach with his family, works as a sailor, or he’s a price for the like, little mermaid aesthetic. 

He sees Magnus, and he isn't sure what's going on, but he wants to help. He bandages up the wound. He notices that Magnus seems to get a little....lethargic being outside the water. He was moving a little before but now his breathing is slow, his heartbeat is slow, so he finds somewhere shallow, lays him so that the wound is outside.

okay maybe i do kinda have a plot

Magnus starts to wake up and at first he panics- he doesn’t recognize Alec, he panics, Alec tries to calm him down and Magnus is trying to fight back but eventually he calms down. 

His injury starts to heal itself, Magnus thanks Alec and leaves

The next time they meet, Alec is out in a storm. (LITTLE MERMAID AU) and he’s a dramatic bitch so he tries to go down with his ship. 

Magnus saves him from the wreckage, drags him up on an island near where he lives

as soon as Alec wakes up Magnus is all “we’ve got to stop meeting like this”

but before he leaves, Alec is all “how can i find you again”

so they pick a time

they meet around nightfall, every night, and they talk, exchange stories

Alec sits on a rock, and Magnus leans against it, body half in the water and half out. and they talk for hours, and Magnus thinks about how pretty Alec looks under the moonlight and Alec thinks about how the reflections of the stars in the water play across Magnus’s skin and make him look etheral. 

Magnus definitely doesn't become human forever. maybe there's some type of magic that lets him temporarily go out of water, or magic to let Alec come down and be part of his society

OKAY FAIRIES. Meliorn is also in this au bc of course they are. I’m not quite imagining seelies though. I am ABSOLUTELY imagining wings bc Magnus with wings is the BEST content. His wings are a little transparent, they’re golden, and they shine when the light flows through them. 

They’re absolutely beautiful, and once he and Alec are together, Alec spends hours just staring at them, stroking his hand over every bit. They don’t feel real, they feel so light and soft. 

I actually have no plot for this mostly just hhghghghg magnus with wings pretty im sorry fjdsklfjdlksa.
