What some people miss when talking about the Fionna and Cake finale is the fact that if Simon's and Betty's arc didn't end how it ended, they had no "happier" option that would be coherent with the series at large
They are the doomed pairing at the center of it all, them realizing just how doomed they were, recognizing it and having their goodbyes was as good as they'd have it, because any other course of action either still dooms them or it dooms the whole world, and that's what all the parallel universes showed
If Simon and Betty never got to the crown, maybe if Simon had gone on with Betty to see the petroglyphs and their sacrifices were more evened out from the beginning, still not too long later the mushroom war would still have erupted, the bombs dropped and as normal humans it's almost certain they'd have died. Marceline would grow up without Simon, and now we're in the universe of the star
If Simon stayed in a half-transformed state, where he's neither fully Ice King nor fully Simon, we get the Winter King and someone has to be the recipient of the "crown madness" as was PB in that universe (plus, more importantly to not feel "insane" he didn't transfer the magic or the Gunther that comes with the crown, he mostly just transferred his sadness about Betty which manifested in him stealing princesses to be his brides. Thus the Winter King doesn't even remember her)
If he'd become Ice King again, he'd turn back to living not as himself, lost within the crown and depressed deep down because of it. Plus the messaging of succumbing back to an addiction he couldn't get out of because he was absolutely self destructive since without Betty his life didn't matter to him
If he'd put on the crown and stopped the bomb, Betty probably would've continued living, forever missing his memory just as he forever missed her in the main timeline. Plus eventually we get to farmworld reality
Truly the only alternative course of action that maybe could've worked somehow in terms of keeping them both alive and together for more than like 2 years would be if Betty didn't leave through the Hambo portal and maybe stayed to find Marcy along with Simon, making him less self-destructive and careless about his transformation and what it brings at the same since she'd be there too. But then there'd come a point where unassisted with magic, Betty would die anyway, and Simon would go down the Ice King path again
They're forever doomed
The events will happen, happening, happened, so on and so forth
And at least in their doom they were able to recognize it, have a moment of sincerity, Simon apologized for not seeing her sacrifices, and they both know that things could've been different, maybe better, maybe not, but regardless all their actions were taken and they have to live with them. So all in all, it's great that at last they recognize it as an experience they wouldn't trade for anything anyway, and life goes on. For Simon, with Betty's support through Golb he was able to go back and see worth in jeeping on living and going on new adventures instead of remaining stagnant for her who's never going to be back as he knew her. And Betty got to be a god, she got omnipotence, she got to protect Simon from the last obstacle to his safety: himself. And in the end it seems to imply she might've separated from Golb and become a catalyst comet herself, to be reborn
It's that signature bitter sweetness and acceptance that flawed people live flawed lives with shitty and great parts alike that's so signature adventure time. And it all will happen, happening happened and will happen again and again

Adventure Time new episodes
This is for "Destiny" and "Winter King". I am not making a big analysis, honestly I have no idea where the miniseries is heading, but here are a couple of points I want to make.
So, to start us off, this is obviously Snake on a Nokia phone... the controls for this thing were absolute garbage but it did the job. Is the snake eating little bunnies????
It's interesting that designer bags are the same in both worlds, but that makes sense because this is just another future version of a world Simon lived in.
When I first saw Jay, I assumed he was Finn's baby brother from the Farmworld universe - wouldn't the baby brother be about the correct age??? - but he's actually Finn's son!
Jay and Bonnie are a reference to the episode Puhoy! Their mother was most likely Roselinen. Our Finn had specific reasons for naming them Jay (Jake) and Bonnie (PB). Farmworld Finn named them that too but unless he knew a farmworld PB it's more of a reference than anything else.
Also... against all reason, Farmworld Jake is still alive! Barely!
Finn had a LOT OF KIDS and also his wife his dead. Damn, even in this world. Most of his kids have his or Rosalinen's hair colour but the boy on the right looks a lot like Hunter from the first episode.
Take that as you will...
Like in the original S5 episodes there are farmworld versions of some characters like Choose Goose, Starchy, and Wildberry Princess. So there was probably farmworld versions of most of his friends. We already saw what happened to this version's Simon and Marcy, who both died brutally.
The crown is in the giant crater because it was evaporated by the goddamn nuke. Incredible that any part of it survived, really.
The rest of this episode speaks for itself. It was a fun look at an alternate universe where Finn lived a very different life. His personality here is nothing like our Finn who is a lot more adventurous. Farmworld has taken its toll on our boy.
Onto Winter King...
This penguin boy doesn't seem to be 100% ice. It's possible that his beak was stuck on like a snowman, but it's also possible this is a transformed version of Gunther.
This Ice King's history is very similar to our Ice King's. Most changes were 100 years ago when he transferred the twisted madness to PB.
Can someone explain to me why there is a naked chicken here???? I do not like this at all
I checked out two designs that I thought this place might be referencing. It doesn't look like either but, eh.
Below is Candy Kingdom concept art from 2008.
Below is Candy island from Flapjack!
And below, ironically the most similar looking, is Candy Island from Bob's Burgers.
Some interesting things about this alternate Simon...
This young Marceline with the axe has implications for why this Simon might've turned "evil". Marceline either ran away from him after what he did to PB, or she died at some stage. He made an "Ice Marcy" to replace her.... Young and adorable, just she was when he was Simon. This seems to be his method for dealing with any problems.
His science in this room was interesting... it reminded me of Princess Bubblegum's technology, or the stuff that Simon and Betty were able to make when combining science and magic in the land of Ooo. Honestly I don't feel that he'd have been successful in duplicating the crown, but he was immediately willing to try.
The reason Simon doesn't remember Betty as his great love is because this was an important part of his madness. When he transferred his madness to PB, he also transferred his obsession with Betty.
This is why Candy Queen is so obsessed with kidnapping Ice King and Simon, it's the exact reason why Ice King used to kidnap her!
Also, 10 out of 10 to Hynden Walch in this episode. I was convinced there was a different voice actress for Candy Queen, but upon checking the credits, it really is her. You can recognise her singing well too.
This version of PB has a lot more mastery over her candy elemental magic. It's probably a result of being possessed by the Crown's madness for so a hundred years. You see her doing all sorts of crazy stuff as Candy Queen, though in that state her abilities are a lot more like Ice King's than they are like the insane PB from the Elements miniseries.
It's really funny that PB is like "I'm trying not to dwell on it" about the hundred years thing. AT is very casual like that. Though she's gonna be very sad when she realises Fionna and Cake ripped the faces off most of her candy people. Brutal scene.
And it's funny how she kissed Fionna. She just does that with all her knights. I wonder if there is a Finn in this universe? Ice Prince seemed to expect the Ice girls to save him...
I found it sweet that Ice King really wanted to save someone else he saw as being possessed by madness. It was entirely possible that CQ was just "like that", but he was right on the money, and it shows how he contrasts to his alternate self, who is actively benefitting from this situation even if he gets regularly kidnapped. And it's not like Fionna is doing anything that Finn didn't do to Ice King!
This scene was brutal. Funnily enough I watched Infinity Train book 3 with Kim last night, this reminds me of the moment THAT Simon-- Oh my God, does this always happen to characters named Simon?
Fionna removed the magic from the crown, so Simon aged rapidly, just like in the episode "Betty". Though this time it happened instantaneously rather than across 11 minutes.
I think this is the part where Fionna realises her rampage across the multiverse is genuinely hurting people.
It was VERY CUTE watching Gary Prince (holy shit that name) show off his little Candy Kingdom. There's a lot of elements of PB there, and it parallels how ultimately the Candy Kingdom was PB's own version of the cake - she made all these characters and made little stories for them, which we know from the show was her way of dealing with the world.
What was REMARKABLY FUCKED UP was the shots to Fionna murdering possessed versions of these beloved characters. I mean... they're PROBABLY all still alive, but they are very fucked up now.
I also enjoy how the Lemoncarbs - Tree Trunks calls them that!! - are both here and alive, and superior to Gary lol. And I think Jinx Monsoon's voice acting here fits a lot better than in episode 4 where they tried to do a straight imitation of Lemongrab.
I haven't said much about these two but you can see how they contrast - Marshall just Does things, while Gary procrastinates constantly. And Marshall's behaviour can seem reckless but Gary would've never taken that big step forward without his help. It's funny how Marshall can just call his mother to summon the Lemoncarbs in the middle of the night, and sweet how he'd do that to help Gary.
Then he listens to the autistic boy gush about his characters. Awww.
This world here is obviously a joke about the elusive Adventure Time Babies show that Muto was terrified he'd be asked to make. Hell it's possible he pitched this show to CN once or twice. But Baby Looney Tunes and Tiny Titans are both famous spinoffs of this ilk, and Craig of the Creek got a spinoff about Craig's baby sister.
Simon is still determined to become Ice King again but he wants to "do it right". I still think he's HORRIBLY MISGUIDED but he is starting to realise that, maybe, he is the best version of himself. He could've been a huge ding dong like Ice Prince.
Also Chan is going to be so sad if that's the only time we see Young Finn and Jake.

Fun idea:
While living in the Treehouse, Snow Queen starts to mom Finn (And probably calls him Gunther? Who knows) because he is a kid, and she and Simon live there so obviously he has to be their son right? Now they are a family and Simon its never going to leave again.
Also Simon unwittingly starts to dad Finn around because he is Simon and he cant go around wthout adopting a child.
Finn feels a little weird because, while he already had Joshua and Margaret, these two are humans (Or in case of Betty, mostly human) and he doesnt know how to feel about it. His relationship with Simon could be extra awkward depending if the events of The Citadel already happened and Martin is already going around.
sir ma’am or mx you are a genius.
I’m thinking the Sugar Snow War takes place before Finn goes on his dad quest, so at this point he’s still under the impression that he’s the only human around… except for Simon, who they pulled out of an icicle a while ago and who they haven’t seen much of since he went to the Candy Kingdom. he used to visit a lot when he was in Wizard City, but after that he sort of went quiet. now he’s back, with the Snow Queen who’s utterly doting on him and seems very clingy, and with Marceline, who’s a mix of happy that her adoptive mom got her beloved back, and absolutely pissed that her ex tried to imprison said beloved for blackmail purposes and then went on to destroy her mom’s entire kingdom. Marceline leaves shortly after making sure that SQ and Simon will be good to stay at the treehouse (Jake said yes and what Jake says goes), but that just leaves them with Snow Queen, Simon, Finn, Jake, BMO, Shelby in the walls, and also Gunther, who keeps disappearing randomly (presumably to also be in the walls).
and then Finn comes down from i go stroom for breakfast the next morning, and Snow Queen has already set a place at the table for him next to the penguin and Simon is making pancakes, which is Weird, and Jake is already eating the pancakes, which isn’t as weird but it is a little odd that he’s not the one making them. apparently these two want to contribute to the household or something? Finn doesn’t really mind, the pancakes are good and Snow Queen is being pretty civil.
then it starts to get a little weirder.
she put snacks and a couple ice knives in his backpack before he went adventuring, ‘just in case’? she asked if he remembered his sword and said to have fun in the dungeon? she’s offering him life advice that is probably very illegal but not actually that bad? y’know what, maybe he will beset a wizard with penguins the next time they try to take his stuff. Magic Man has it coming, anyways.
it sort of reminds him of his mom — Jake’s mom first, but Finn’s mom, too. she’d done this sort of thing with a little less crazy and a little more sensibleness, but it’s the same gist anyways. it’s only when Snow Queen tries to fix his hair before putting his hat on him and calls him Gunther that he realises she’s trying to parent him.
and honestly, he doesn’t know that he’s really that opposed to it. sure, it’s kinda weird, but she’s not actually hurting anything. Simon’s been following her example to some degree, helping Finn with puzzles and artifacts, telling him about human stuff from the past, suggesting new tricks and games to try, but it doesn’t really feel like Joshua’s ‘tough love’. it’s something different, something Finn doesn’t really remember experiencing before — the closest thing he’s had to this is Jake, who’s definitely never been quite so parental about his worrying.
honestly, his only questions at this point are whether it would make Marceline his older sister if Snow Queen and Simon tried to adopt him (it would), and whether Jake is getting adopted too (he is).
(side note — Finn isn’t quite so messed up about Martin in this au because as soon as the events of the Citadel have played out, he walks himself straight over to the Snow Kingdom and lays on the floor until someone asks him what’s wrong, and then he gets to have Family Therapy with his third set of parents, since the first are half-unavailable and half-terrible, and the second are no longer around. He also gets to hold a penguin the entire time which is very therapeutic and does not leave him with the desire to rip Martin’s arm off.)

17. "No, no, no, you can't close your eyes right now!"
Tbh this fic started as a completely different concept but I think it fit really well with this request so yah

The realization is slow. Not in the way a predator creeps on an unsuspecting victim. Nor in the way an illness would, slowly taking over your body and mind until you can no longer ignore your decreasing abilities. No. It’s not even noticeable at first. Little hints here and there, indicative of something bigger.
And then it dawned on you. Suddenly. Like a spark igniting a rampant fire.
It happened when you looked up. The sky was different here. Strange. Nothing like Earth’s. There were no constellations - at least not yet. Two moons circled and twirled around the planet. Your new home.
You had neglected to look up since you landed. You couldn’t blame anyone. There was simply too much to do - buildings in need of building, resources to discover and study, maps to draw up of the surrounding area. Not only that, you joined your leads wherever you could.
You assisted Celci as she and her team revived colonists. You welcomed each new citizen with a smile and Welcome to our new planet! All 100,000 of them. Celci told you to take a break, get a nap, eat something. You would argue that everyone deserved to be welcomed, and it helped you get a grasp on just how many carpenters, engineers, scientists, medics, gun hands and others there actually were. She gave you a worried and disapproving side eye, but she couldn’t do anything to stop you.
Gunther worked to set up a perimeter where the first buildings could be set up. You helped to plan out which buildings went where, and exactly where your borders should be laid. And when he started setting up armed droids to keep an eye out for raging wildlife that could threaten your new beginnings? You were all too happy to put yourself to work, hauling the heavy automechanicals to each designated spot. If he made a comment about exerting yourself, you ignored it and kept on working.
Burt, with the lack of necessity for warp-core engineering (the thought made you flinch), helped out in home-building. He acted as foreman, making sure each sheet of metal had its place. As the framework finished, he and his team went in to affix lights and other electronic necessities. A few engineers even took plumbing jobs. (There was, unfortunately, a lack of those sent over from Earth.) Quiet as he was, the only time he pointed out your willingness to dive head first and help build foundations, framework and walls, was in a poetic waxing after a rather large building neared completion. You said it was a beautiful poem, but you didn’t quite understand its meaning. (You did.)
And Mark. Oh, god, Mark. With each new job you threw yourself into, he was always right there, running around like a headless chicken trying to help. If you were building a wall, he was right behind you (sometimes even right next to you, holding the metal in place as you bolted it in), keeping you up to date with the progress of the colony, messages from Earth, and other such things. He worried over you the most out of anyone else.
You couldn’t blame him, honestly. After the… adventure you both went on, you wouldn’t give yourself the time of day to even close your eyes. Once dark settled in, you threw yourself into paperwork and managerial nonsense. You couldn’t stop.
It had been one of these nights when you realized. You just finished talking to Celci, discussing the discoveries being made. The scientists just started working with the security crew to go out on excursions to study the flora and fauna. They just brought back a strange plant that they believed could be medicinal. It was exciting, truly.
But Celci had been short with the discussion. She had her arms crossed the whole time, shutting down branching topics with quick retorts. You need rest, she’d scolded. She shoved a protein bar in your hand and sent you to your tent, with orders not to do any work tomorrow. When you tried to protest, she enacted a rule that stated she - as lead officer for medical - could confine you to your quarters if you were not at your peak health, physical or otherwise. You couldn’t argue with her, and so trudged like a pouting child toward the temporary camp of tents everyone was staying in.
That’s when you looked up. You stopped, staring at the unfamiliar stars, the strange moons that lacked craters. The Invincible could just be seen, hovering in the atmosphere. You were waiting for orders from Earth to know what to do with her. You refused to dismantle the grand spaceship. Most likely, it would continue to remain high above the planet, run by a skeleton crew. Forever up there. Alone.
That is when the realization overcame you.
It was slow. And then it all came crashing down over top of you like a tsunami. A growing sense of guilt filled your chest. Was that it? Guilt. No, maybe it was… loss. Yes. A powerful sense of grief within you, bubbling to the surface.
Maybe it had always been there. You couldn’t rightly tell. But it was powerful. It grew, bubbling like a thick paste within you until it reached your tear ducts and buckled your knees. The ground was warm beneath you, and the sky full of strange new stars blurred into a swirl of watercolors. Maybe this was how Van Gogh saw the world. Through tears.
“Captain?”
Your lip trembled. You couldn’t look at him.
A warm body knelt next to you on the ground. His dark eyes burned into your skin, searching desperately for answers. Why were you crying? Why were you sitting out in the middle of the camp, staring at the sky? When he glanced up, following your gaze, he caught sight of the Invincible. He mentally damned the ship.
Was it because of the ship that you were crying? Far too often to be healthy, he, too, stared up at the ship. He remembered the warp core. The mistakes he made, and the ones he caused.
He had no idea what you saw up there. You never spoke about it. Now he wished he had. He wished he asked. He wished he knew what worlds, what alternate realities, what different timelines you’d witnessed. Maybe then he could understand what was wrong.
“Cap…?”
Your eyes were red now. Your face crinkled with grief and sorrow, fighting back the onslaught of tears. You gasped in a shaky breath. Out came a whisper. He thought, perhaps, you would tell him about the things you’d seen. You witnessed thousands of deaths; he had, too. But that was not what came out of your mouth.
“I don’t remember my name.”
Mark was stunned. Shock and confusion overtook his body. Your name? Well, of course, your name was… It’s…
Confused and frustrated, he remembered the IDs on file for every single crew member. He sifted through so many every day, trying to keep track of who was who. It took a few taps on his wrist pad to pull up your ID. He skimmed it for himself before holding out his arm to show you.
The image was fairly recent, only from a few months ago. But you looked… brighter. Hopeful. Determined. Your hair was a little shorter then, too. The bags under your eyes from rigorous study weren’t as prominent as they were now. You looked like a hollow shell of who you once were.
And, yes, that was your name. Or… was it? Was it really your name after everything that had happened?
No. That was their name.
You shook your head and furiously wiped at the tears on your cheeks. Every crass name, criminal title, and disparaging nickname flooded your mind. No. They didn’t have those titles. They didn’t deserve the hatred and vitriol that followed you through that wormhole. They were not the Captain. And you were not them.
“That’s not my name anymore,” you croaked. You shook your head again. You looked like a child having a breakdown in kindergarten over a broken toy. “That’s- That’s not me anymore.”
Mark couldn’t say he really understood why. The image of you, all crooked grins and academy-fresh confidence, was you. He remembered you gushing to him over flying your first airplane, and going through the rigorous training of outer-space flying. He remembered because it was you who gave him the idea for all those stupid windows. When you gushed over being so close to the night sky you felt you could reach out and pluck Polaris right out of the inky black.
But when he looked from the picture to you? He was reminded of the hardships. How you jumped from universe to universe, wracking up casualties, just to save him. And he started to get it. You went through too much to be even near the same plane of existence as your young, naive self.
“Who am I, Mark?”
When you fell to press your face unceremoniously into his shoulder, he wasted no time wrapping you up in his arms. The ID flickered away as the screen turned off. He tried to hold on tight enough to physically stop you from shaking with your sobs, but it was impossible.
“You’re our Captain.”
Maybe it wasn’t the right thing to say. But they were the only words he could find.
Anybody who passed by pretended they didn’t see anything. He hoped, anyway. He couldn’t meet their eyes. All he could do was hold on, as you had done for him once. Your sobs turned into stifled cries, and then only whimpers. He wasn’t concerned at first. In fact, he was a little relieved you were beginning to calm down. Until you became completely limp in his hold.
Even then, he still paused a second, before pulling you back until he could see your face. Had your skin always been so dull?
He shook you slightly. Maybe you were just sleeping, right? Your eyelids didn’t even flutter. Panic shot through his heart.
He shook you again, harder this time. No response.
“Captain?” Another shake, perhaps a little more vigorously than he intended. Your body was a rag doll, flopped in his lap. “No, no, no, you can’t close your eyes right now!”
His mind, scared and jumping to all the worst conclusions, raced to figure out what to do. He laid you on the ground and pressed an ear against your chest.
…
……
Okay. There’s a heartbeat. A little weaker than he thought was normal, but it was there. And your chest was moving, albeit slowly, with each breath. He pulled away. His hands, calloused with years of fiddling with wires and heavy machinery, floundered in the air. He didn’t know what to do.
Desperate cries for help, for Cici, for anyone were ripped from his lungs. He was gasping for air by the time half the camp rushed out to see what the commotion was. He couldn’t catch his breath until you were safe again.
He just needed you to be safe.
-
Word spread about the Captain’s health quickly. Mark couldn’t say he was surprised. Actually, he was sort of embarrassed.
That night - almost a week ago now - Celci had rushed to his side. She was the rational and cool-headed one. She commanded medics to grab a stretcher, to ready an IV, prepare a bed and equipment. All the while he screeched like a banshee, whaling for his old friend.
Uncharacteristically, though, she didn’t say a word about it. Nobody did. (Or, at least, not when he was within earshot.) She grabbed him a chair, some water and snacks, even a blanket. And as he sat by the Captain’s side, a permanent frown etched within his features, she kept him up to date on your condition and on the colony.
He knew his fears were wholly rational. After jumping through wormholes and witnessing first hand what consequences it brought, it was only natural for him to fret over the permanence of life now.
How stupid he’d been. Really. How many times did he grab your hand and jump back into the wormhole? More than he could count on one hand. The way he would be torn apart by a black hole or exploded by a supernova, and still step out of that pod with a giddy little grin, asking, almost begging, the Captain to jump in again. And again. And again.
Vaguely he remembered an airlock.
Neither of you were immortal now. Honestly, he hated immortality. It seems to amazing in theory…
He drags a hand down his face with a sigh. His shoulders are hunched. He leans his elbows against the edge of your bed.
He’s tired. Not like before. This wasn’t an exhaustion fueled by some silly false heroics or nonstop building of a catalyst to all your issues. No. He was exhausted with worry, and fear, and- God, emotions he didn’t even have words for. It all sat heavy in his soul.
Guilt, he decided to call it. But different. Guilt if it was slightly to the left.
Celci told him you just passed out from exhaustion and overworking yourself. Maybe he felt guilty for not picking up on it sooner, or for stopping you before it got so bad. It’s not as if the bags under your eyes were invisible, or that the way you carelessly rushed in to help every single person in need was subtle. He should have noticed.
Maybe then you would remember your name. Or, he thought back to your ID, believe you’re still you.
He wished his mind could shut up, for once.
A distraction. That’s what he needed, yeah.
He dragged his eyes from your face to your monitor. He was never very good with medical stuff. The numbers were odd. Was that blood pressure normal? Too high? Too low? Hell if he knew. Was your heart beating fast enough?
He contemplated for a brief moment the components that went into a monitor like that. The wires, connectors, screws, bolts, etc. And then he remembered this machine was making sure you were still alive. The idea of dismantling it was no longer appealing.
He turned to the IV next. A slow, continuous drip of fluids, hooked up to your arm. Needles always gave him a bad feeling. He felt nauseous looking at it.
Strange flowers caught his attention next. There were no roses or tulips or irises out here. Just… Well, they didn’t have names yet. The exobiologists were working on formulating latin names, genuses, and everything else that came with cataloging different flora. They were still beautiful, he couldn’t deny it. Bright orange petals with neon blue stamens that glowed at night. Razor-leaved stems that started as purple by the bloom and morphed into an odd black hue. They looked poisonous, actually. He was sure they wouldn’t be allowed in here if that was the case.
Paper was becoming a luxury at this point. Not that it mattered much, with everything accessible at the press of a button on their wrists. Still, they thought it would be best to ration out the remaining scraps throughout the colony. And everyone, seemingly unanimously, decided to use the rare material to write get well soon cards.
The little folds of parchment filled every possible surface. With 100,003 people writing get well and thank you, at some point the excess of good will notes had to be tucked away in a bin to be read later. He caught a nurse, once, rotating out the cards.
His frown softened when he thought of the very human way in which they cared about you. How human to utilize a precious resource just to say Thank you, wake up soon. How human to see something beautiful in nature, and to display it tenderly next to you. We found something beautiful, it made us think of you. How very human for those who stopped by, who saw him ever at your side like a steadfast protector, rested a hand on his shoulder or patted him on the back. You are not alone in your pain.
He wished, desperately, that you could be awake to witness the love humanity so freely handed out. Maybe then you could rediscover who you were.
“You look like shit.”
Mark startled awake. When did he fall asleep? Ah, dammit, it was dark outside. He must have been out for hours. He scrubbed at the exhaustion crusting his eyelids shut.
Wait…
His body froze. He was too scared to breathe. His heart was racing.
He couldn’t have heard that. He couldn’t have.
Heart in his throat, he slowly removed his hand from his eye and dragged his eye along your frame, still tucked safely under the blanket. Sure enough, when he finally reached your face, there was a smug grin waiting for him.
And with a jolt, his body came back to life.
You watched, half-amused as Mark threw himself from his chair to press a Call Nurse button on the opposite side of your bed. His eyes were wide and frantic. His hair was a mess. Bags under his eyes carried the weight of the world, tears of relief slipping down his cheeks before he could even think to stop them.
“You’re- You’re awake!” he croaked. His hands instinctively grabbed onto your shoulders. They were trembling.
You tried to reach up to hold onto his shoulder, maybe even his face to feel his concerning amount of stubble, but it felt so heavy. You held onto his forearm instead. “How long-?”
Celci came storming in, looking about as frantic as Mark, but better put together. Once she saw you were conscious, her expression morphed to be somewhere between joy and fury. Uh oh.
“Captain!” The only freedom from her intense stare came when she checked your vitals. Mark backed away so she had plenty of room to do so, but he kept a hand on one of your shoulders. He couldn’t pull himself away just yet. “I’m not going to say ‘I told you so’, but I told you this was going to happen if you kept pushing yourself so hard!”
“What exactly happened?”
The cryonics lead faltered. Mark gave her a pleading look. She realized, for the first time since stepping in here, that he had been- no, was crying. She had never seen him cry before.
Celci sighed and tapped a few things into her wrist pad. “I’m assigning you to bedrest and low-effort work until you decide to put your needs before those of the colony.” She leveled you with a concerned stare. “The colony needs you, Captain. You can’t be everywhere at once, helping with every last fiber of your being, no matter how much you want to. Let the rest of us carry the responsibilities we were sent here to carry.”
Mark turned away to wipe away his tears before she could glare at him next and give him a lecture, too. She huffed, nodded to you with a Captain, and left.
The air was thick. Things unsaid hung around in the air like dust caught in a sunbeam - everywhere you look and hard to ignore.
Mark didn’t look at you as he tried to gather himself together. The motes would continue lingering until he was ready to answer your questions.
Deciding to give him some space (as much as you could while bedridden), you looked to the side. The hordes of cards was utterly overwhelming. Each one was different from the next. Some had Captain written on the front in neat cursive, heavy-handed scrawls, or chicken scratch. Some people did their ‘C’s differently, or slurred their writing together in their plain-text handwriting. Other cards simple said Get well soon! or Feel better! You could see small paragraphs of writing inside the folds.
A rush of warmth flooded your chest. All of the command leads, all of the colonists - everyone thought about you. Maybe the idea of being thought of was just so foreign, but you didn’t think in any earnest capacity that this many people would care. The Leads, sure, you spent so much time with them up on the ship (more than they realized), but the most contact the vast majority of the colonists had with you was the simple welcome you gave them as they were thawed. And yet. Despite it all. Everyone had left a card.
Everyone cared about you.
The warm feeling in your chest turned sour as you remembered your conversation with Mark last night. (Was it last night?) The way the stars glimmered back without a care for you. The way you squeezed that protein bar so tight it became mush in its package. The way Mark held you.
I don’t remember my name.
Who am I, Mark?
You squeezed his arm, as much as you could in your weakened state.
You’re our Captain.
Reddened eyes met yours. His eyes were so dark, but they held a thousand thoughts, emotions, and ideas behind them. You remembered looking into those eyes, as you held onto him, refused to let him go even as he called you hateful names and ripped the crystal from your palm.
“You’ve been asleep for a week.” He sniffed. His hand trembled as he gave your shoulder a reassuring squeeze. “Cici said… You were overworking yourself, pushing yourself past your limit just to be there for everybody, and you weren’t taking care of yourself like you should have been and she said-” He swallowed thickly, fighting to speak through the lump in his throat. “You could have died.”
Oh. It had been that bad? You couldn’t recall feeling weak. Though, maybe it was from the endless running you did during the warp core fiasco. How long had you been awake during that endless nightmare? Your body had recovered once the cycle was broken, but your mind…
“I’m sorry.” It was all you could say. His shoulders fell. “I didn’t…” Your voice was quiet, almost too soft to be a whisper. As if you were afraid to say what was on your mind. “When we were in the wormhole, I was so tired. We both were. But it’s like, I don’t even know what it’s like to feel tired anymore, because nothing compares to what happened.”
You looked up at him, like a child seeking approval. In your eyes, he saw universes colliding, supernovas, and someone who never gave up hope. For the briefest hint of a second, he saw that same determined graduate from the ID.
“Does that make sense?”
He nodded without thinking. His hand left your shoulder, following the length of your arm to hold your hand. You didn’t have gloves on. It was… odd. He ignored the calloused scar that brushed against his palm. “I feel the same. I remember building the… it. I didn’t sleep at all, then. And now that I can, it feels… wrong. I’m not tired, but I am. I can’t explain it better than that.”
“I think we both need a nap.”
He huffed. It was nice to see him smile again. “On your orders, Captain.” His grin flickered, eyes darkened. “If you’d like, you can choose a different name. It wouldn’t be too hard to change your ID.”
“No,” you said. You smiled. “You were right, all along.”
“About what?”
“I’m your Captain.”

That one recent question about Amethyne RSV gave me another one; how would the event be if Lance ever met with one of the Amethynes?
Let's just say the family had something to do with the adventurers. Maybe they tried to established a new Ferngill Republic department of defense, or a private security company that specializes with monsters (it's just a prompt that I randomly came up with, I'm sorry if it sounds dumb 🥲)
They need someone they can consult with, or even better, establish collaboration. For some reason, they managed to contact Lance (either they asked Farmer, or just knew him since from one of Victor's heart event, Lance seems to be the type of adventurer who is famous and approachable due to his friendly nature)
I can imagine, since from what I heard somewhere, Lance came from a noble family. So he knew pretty well high society etiquette, but never show them to anyone because of his humble personality. But when he met the Amethyne, he unconsciously let those etiquette lesson seep out (again, this might sound dumb, but I just love a situation where Lance unknowingly let others see his nobility side, especially to other noble that doesn't know his family and known him only as an adventurer)
Thank you for reading my super long rambling
Yes yes yes yes! Y E S !
Be aware, dear anon 😅 also super long rumbling:
_________________________________________
I definitely remember discussing with someone the possibility of Lance meeting the Amethyne family (at least one of them, like Maive), as the Farmer's spouse, not on official business. But this event is entirely possible!
Because if you recall the events in SVE, civilians can hire adventurers as mercenaries and bodyguards, and it doesn't violate the rules of the Guilds themselves or the Order. How exactly this happens, and whether it is somehow documented (by contract) is unknown, and yet it is there. Gunther was able to hire a Farmer to accompany him to the Mines, so why can't other adventurers do such a thing if it means extra profit and glorification of the Guild's name?
The north of Ridgeside Village is teeming with monsters, and although ninja assassins stand guard, they don't officially show up anywhere. Also, people are realizing that monsters exist, which means that if the problem gets to be too big, it's time to call in the professionals. And since the Amethyne family are (officially or not - I can't say) patrons of Ridgeside Village, looking out for the very community, like Lenny, they will send urgent letters to verified Guilds, offering work in the "cleanup".
Maive would definitely push for an urgent meeting with the Guild heads or deputies, as she wouldn't allow a possible threat to Ridgeside Village, plus the area covered in monsters could be utilized. I came up with this "Maive want an expansion everywhere" theory, because I vividly remember meeting her at the resort on Ginger Island, and the first thing she said was about "expanding the resort and creating a tourist spot here", or something like that. That surprised me a little bit. I don't know why the hell our Madame thinks she can do whatever she wants, but apparently she has enough power and the means to do it, she feels so confident. So Maive can do the same with Ridge Forest.
Now the question: which Guilds will respond?
The famous Castle Village was the first choice, since it's all professional monster hunters (also the prices are sharp, as Morris confirms when he hired them for Spirit's Eve, but it's not a problem for wealthy noble family), but due to some personal factors, Camilla said no. Okay, whatever, Maive will complain, and starts looking for other options later. The Adventurer's Guild is the most logical option, as the headquarters is not far away, but Marlon is unlikely to agree to deal with this family of demanding aristocrats, even for a lot of money (his own nerves are more important). And The First Slash Clan comes to mind.
Jolyne could safely let Lance, as her second-in-command, negotiate such contracts if it meant a benefit to the First Slash itself. Given that our pink-haired adventurer is smart and well-mannered (we won't mention here the possibility that Lance can be a smug bitch), his charm, silver tongue and friendly nature, he will always make good deals, Jolyne trusts him to do so.
Maive will invite Lance to a meeting at her mansion for dinner because that's what the rules of hospitality in her house require (also headcanons, because idk how this things works). Madame was morally prepared for all the antics of the guest, considering adventurers rather rude in communication and ill-mannered. Anything to bargain for the work. And what was her surprise when Lance spoke to her according to all the rules, as a civilized man, knows table etiquette perfectly and in general a very pleasant and polite person. Maive's discerning eyes wouldn't miss it all. The conversation somehow touched on Lance's personal life, to which he would politely and modestly confirm his pedigree of noble adventurers.
So now the adventurer from First Slash will take care of the monster problem, because Maive is sure that at least one of their guild members can be dealt with properly.
She won't ask about Lance in more detail about his life, because with all due respect, these are rather personal matters and her upbringing doesn't allow her to go overboard. But it will be allowed if Lance also happens to be the husband of Farmer, best friend of all Amethyne members and grandchild of Maive's old friends. That's where she learns all the details.
_________________________________________
I apologize if my rumbling got a little chaotic, but I've always been in favor of the idea of Lance interacting with the Amethyne family and what would come of it. Thank you again for your interesting thoughts, I really enjoyed rereading your ask! 😊💖

Hey how is watching amphibia going for you? Thoughts?
Well, I mean that last episode of season two was... A lot, and I've hardly been able to not think about it all day, but otherwise, I've really been enjoying my journey through Amphibia. I mean, the humour's not too far removed from, like, The Owl House or Gravity Falls, so that's already something for me to latch on to. Some of the anime action touches that've been showing up near the end of season two have been amazing as well. Like, I really need to emphasize how incredible Sasha tossing off her gear in the third temple is; that was really cue to me like, "Oh, this kinda stuff 'boutta go nuts."
I thought I'd have a problem with each episode being split into two segments—I mean, the last two shows I watched, The Owl House and Avatar The Last Airbender, were full 22 minute-ers... But honestly, each segment has been well paced enough and has had enough stuff packed in that it's never felt like just a string of 11 minute adventures. I suppose I just forgot how well the "two segments" thing can be done.
I also didn't think I'd be as into the world as I am. Y'know, entirely amphibian-themed? I don't typically have any interest in frogs, but, hey, it's actually fun to see how a lot of it works. Plus, the little glimpses back into the human world have been fun—as of course it would be in a series with humor like this.
And the character relationships and dramas—I mean, that's even why the end of season two hit as hard for me as it has. Well, one half of why, anyway. But I am just so interested in watching these dynamics evolve and seeing these characters grow and change. And I mean all the characters, really. I think back to The Owl House, where most of my interest was directed towards Luz, King, Eda and Lilith. Which isn't that I didn't care about the rest of them; they're just not as central in my mind as those four. But here, even a lot of the reoccuring side characters have been holding me.
Then there's Marcy—the other reason why. I can't remember the last time a character became my favorite as hard as Marcy. She's just this adorable, autistic nerd, and I never want anything bad to happen to her. Jus', I don't even know what else I wanna say. I feel like I could gush on forever, but I think my love for her might just be that simple. I just look at her and I'm happy.
(Also, shout-outs to Maddie as my favorite non-human and non-Plantar.)
Looking ahead to the third season, well, it seems like it's gonna be doing the thing I wish The Owl House had had the time to do, so that's fun. Plus, hey, it looks like that thing from that one animatic is finally gonna show up. So, oh, boy, that's probably gonna be a lot to deal with as well.
'Coz the thing is, even though I came into this show aware of two major things from the latter half of the show (including Disney+'s thumbnail for the final episode), it's been a joy discovering how it gets to those points, and finding out all the other twists and destinations in-between. Y'know, that classic "It's not the destination, it's the journey" ordeal. Like, it wasn't as high up on my "to watch" list as The Owl House, largely thanks to how "funny frog land adventures" view from the surface, but just like The Owl House, I'm kicking myself for not getting to this sooner.
And, honestly, I might even like this a ltitle more than The Owl House? Which, I never woulda thought, 'coz that show has Eda and Lumity—and it's notlike it's a compeition, anyway, but there you go, I guess. I'm really looking forward to seeing what the third season dishes up.
I've really come a long way from Escape From Vault Disney making their episode on an episode of it all about interviewing Gunther.

Friend, could you explain to me the newest adventure time stuff? Like the simon/ice king thing, what's the plot/backstory that got revealed? At first I assumed these designs I kept seeing were new characters but then I started seeing art of the simon guy turning into the ice king. It's not a big deal but I'm curious what the context is
Sure! So the Simon thing is actually a plot point from the original show! If you’re like me and your adventure time knowledge was mainly the bumpers on Cartoon Network and covers of Marceline songs, then obviously, that’s not something you’d know because it absolutely hit me out of left field. And uh, goes without saying this whole thing is a massive spoiler for the original show. I’ve tried to keep any Fionna & Cake spoilers out, in case you want to watch that. (You should. You should also watch the original. And the Distant Lands shorts. Join us. You won’t regret it. Just maybe pace yourself and don’t watch it all in four nights like I did lol)
Anyway, to the best of my knowledge, it goes like this! Ice King was once a man named Simon Petrikov. When the world ended because of necromancy atomic bombs (btw the world ended), he survived because he discovered a magical crown. It continues to be the source of his ice magic in the main show, but at the time, when he was still Simon, he tried to keep himself from using it as each time he did, he lost a little more of himself. It’s so fucking tragic and way too goddamn relatable for me and my memory issues to see this man struggling to hold onto what makes him him, to the names of the people he loved or to what happened to them. Ice King in the main show has lost all of that. He doesn’t even know he was Simon. He doesn’t recognize Marceline, the girl he raised in the post-apocalypse and who he wore the crown to protect countless times.
It turns out a big theme of Adventure Time is destroying yourself to save the people you love. Who knew. But you watch the show and it just. keeps. happening. And you’re screaming at the characters to stop, to not make this sacrifice, that it isn’t worth it, that there is some other way. But of course, they do it anyway. Simon becomes the Ice King to protect Marceline, and in the end, loses everything that he was.
AND NOW FOR LORE. For you see, the crown does this for a reason! It is cursed! Throughout the show, Ice King calls his penguin companion and sometimes other characters “Gunther”, which seems like a funny gag for the first few seasons, and then! It turns out that Gunther was the name of the apprentice of the Ice Elemental (Original Ice King) who created the crown in the first place to stop a comet from destroying the Earth. When he couldn’t wear the crown himself, he told his apprentice, who he had consistently belittled and kept in the dark about most magic, to do it instead and make a wish to send the comet away.
Gunther wishes to become the Ice King instead. And now, anyone, including a Finn the Human of an alternate timeline where he got the crown, will be corrupted into Gunther’s idea of the Ice King, with a little of the original person’s identity left to shape the new person they become with the crown. (Also interesting and probably just a shortcut for time in the episode, is that alternate Finn corrupts very quickly whereas Simon fights the crown for years. I just think it’s fascinating that Simon could do that! He’s just some guy!!! But he resisted turning into the Ice King for so long!!! He faltered eventually, sure, but it’s still impressive!!!)
So, main show, we’ve got the Ice King, once Simon Petrikov, and he runs around kidnapping princess and making a nuisance of himself (until the rest of the cast befriends him once they learn about what happened to him. There’s a moment in the Elementals series of the original show where Finn calls the Ice King “Simon” for i think the first time? And the Ice King doesn’t know who that is, but Finn still calls him by his real name, something s1 Finn would never have done even if he knew it, and it’s!!! that scene makes my heart melt, it’s so small but it’s!!! yes! character growth for my boy and recognition of his tragedy for my old man!!!)
But why does he kidnap princesses? Where did this fixation come from? Well, when he first found the crown, he was dating a woman named Betty. His princess. Fionna & Cake goes deeper into their relationship, so I won’t spoil beyond where the original show goes. When he puts the crown on for the first time, he loses it, scaring her away when the crown takes over his mind and he shoots ice everywhere. Far in the future, a currently depowered Simon creates a time portal in order to just apologize to her, because he never saw her again after this incident. And why didn’t he see her again? Because, crazy insane fantastic woman that she is, she jumps THROUGH HIS TIME PORTAL. Betty then joins the main show’s timeline, spending the rest of the series trying to find a cure for the crown’s curse.
And. I reiterate, spoilers now for the AT finale, which is. so good. god i cried multiple times during it. that may have been the sleep deprivation though.
Betty’s last hope to save Simon is an ancient god of chaos they used to study together called GOLB. At this point, magic has begun to corrupt her too, due to shenanigans with the Magic man turned Normal man from Mars. (it’s a whole thing) and she’s desperate! In the victory of the Candy Kingdom over Bubblegum’s evil uncle (unrelated to the Ice King plotline, don’t worry about it, Bubblegum did some war crimes) Betty summons GOLB. It’s going to destroy the whole world. Eventually, it ends up eating Betty, the Ice King, and Finn. In the process of “digesting” them, it reverts them back to who they were before the magic got to them. Betty becomes normal Betty, Simon becomes Simon, Finn is perfect so he’s fine. The crown also reverts back to it’s precursed state, able to be used for wishing again. Through the power of love and song, Jake the Dog and all their friends create a passage out of GOLB for them to escape through.
Betty stays behind. Because this show is about destroying yourself if it means saving the people you love. And as the walls close in, she wishes for a way to save Simon. She becomes GOLB. GOLBetty. Simon doesn’t turn back into the Ice King. But she can never be changed back. She leaves, and Simon loses her again. But he’s free. After a thousand years, he’s himself.
(The crown is then put on by Gunther the Penguin, who turns into the Ice Thing. Another version of the Ice King, who the gang are still friends with but who the framing device of two friends far in the future learning about the tale of the Candy Kingdom’s war informs us that his happiness couldn’t last forever. Eventually, all the characters die or part ways with him, and the Ice Thing goes back to being a wizard in the mountains causing problems, without even a piece of Simon buried deep within him to help. Because, you know, Adventure Time needs to break your heart even about this little penguin dude.)
#ask#adventure time#simon petrikov#ice king#shows that broke my goddamn heart like holy shit why did no one let me watch this as a kid#i would’ve been destroyed

Reborn:
Truly what can one say about Reborn?
It begins, beautifully, with Hardwon getting a real chance to meet Lydia and explain to her what she means to him as a person, even without her direct influence on his life.
We then get the reincarnation. Almost rolling a gnome. Seeing melora again, getting tattooed. "I've been a half elf ever since I met you." The hammer taking hardwon back. The wrestling match. The fact that the audio was nearly lost to the ages, but Emily was able to recover it with a years-old forum post.
Entering Hill Home. Bev stopping to buy a comic about a cleric (Emily's cleric) to give to Erlin. Finding out that Erllin and Egwene have been off on their own adventures with Red and Gunther.
Bev’s devastating truth. Erlin’s natural, yet painful, reaction. Egwene reassuring Bev. Balnor’s reaction, making sure Bev knew this happens to people, and that things can still work out.
Moonshine meeting Lucanus. “Hey mom and dad!” Hardwon tackling Denny. Denny getting polymorphed into a boot because he’s just that weak. The conversation with Meemaw. The actual introduction to Lucanus. “A man who never thought he’d have a child, holding his child.”
Talking to Martha Toegold. The fact that she knows already what happened to Bev IV. Telling Bev about the tree in the back. “A Bestiary of Devils and Archdevils by the paladin Beverly Toegold I”. “Your father has given you an instruction manual on how to beat him”.
Every single goddamn thing in between. Goddamn.
One Big Bed:
Another one that’s quite difficult to describe.
The beginning is so soft and beautiful. Carrying Balnor back to the ship to rest after the Raise Dead. Budler framing Hardwon’s tasteful nude drawings and hanging them in the captain’s quarters. Lucanus putting the bubble back up around Gladeholm, and Moonshine sniffing out his magic. Moonshine making sure to help people because she doesn’t know how else to deal with everything. The apology tour by everyone who had attacked the Boobs while they were corrupted. Cobb’s apology.
Bev’s dad using Balnor as a speakerphone in the night to talk to Bev and bless his sword so he could smite with necrotic damage. Bev IV also taking time to heal Balnor while he was in there, making sure the resurrection aftermath was smoother for him. Calling Balnor Bev’s stepdad.
Moonshine and Meemaw heading back to the Crick. Seeing it can be beautiful even in the aftermath of a cataclysm. Finding the bullywugs in the GrandMaw Tree. “How long do half-elves live?” and the whole conversation that follows. “I guess, if I’m being honest, I just don’t know what it’s gonna be like to know Bahumia without Hardwon Surefoot. And there’s a part of me that doesn’t want to find out what that feels like.” Meemaw telling Moonshine to go catch nannerflies so she could zealous trance, allowing her to get a brief moment of childhood.
Jaina and Nerman trying to kidnap Hardwon for a party, and Hardwon resisting them too hard. McGannis naming him king for a day, and giving him a traditional dwarven send-off.
The Green Teens insisting on a jamboreen in a year. Deciding to go prank Denny. Failing horribly. The bullywug scuba suits as disguises. Nearly killing Denny by throwing him out a window.
Moonshine casting animal shapes on the whole party. All the dwarves wanting to be ducks. Jaina approaching Hardwon to make sure it was cool if she romanced Moonshine. The very suspicious way he said nothing was going on between them. “That’s one of the reasons why I fucking worship her”. Finally getting to have a moment himself with a suspiciously recognizable dwarf.
Luna finding Bev when she thought he was in trouble. Noting that Hardwon and Moonshine were “busy”. “Are they in danger?!?” “How old are you?”. Finding out where Thiala is headed.
Ending the night, all together again, in One Big Bed.
Moonshine waking up to cast spells on everyone. The send off they all tried to avoid. The smiles fading as soon as they were out of sight from the general population. Ready for war.

Dragonblade Deep Dive - Chapter Thirteen
Chapter Twelve
Chapter Thirteen – Pledge Brothers
Be advised that quotation marks are a real struggle in this chapter.
A shockingly refreshing moment of insight from Jane, wherein she acknowledges she is not responsible for Jester’s feelings for her or his resulting depressive state. I am astounded.
Pepper finishes tending to Robert’s injuries and moves on to feeding him, and Robert compliments him with a “warm, genuine smile” which “touches everyone gathered in the kitchen”. Gag, there goes my appetite. Nothing like universal adoration for an abusive predator to put me off my crumpets.
Theodore summons Jane. You may recall he was staggeringly drunk about 10 minutes ago. Well, bottle that miracle tonic, he’s perfectly sober now.
Lavinia announces she is going to check on the “pig egg”. Believe it or not, this is important later.
Jane and Theodore head to the throne room, where they have a conversation about comfort and discomfort, dreams and destiny. Sometimes I think the author *cough* Sir Theodore just likes hearing the sound of his own voice. He tells Jane a tale of time spent in a dungeon with Haroldus, Robert’s father, and an unnamed fourth man. Sir Theodore says this happened around 40 years ago, so already the maths doesn’t add up with Haroldus being not-yet-50 now. How was he an imprisoned “young adventurer for hire” scheduled for execution at less than 10-years-old?? Theodore’s story has more holes than a colander, but let’s take it at face value. He is here in the kingdom, and has been training Jane, and Haroldus has been doing whatever he’s been doing, AND Robert’s inherited obsession with dragons that his father had developed, and his resulting unhinged behaviour ALL come down to some long-dead young man’s dying wish based on something he read once?
Honestly?
Moving on.
Gunther is looking for Jester. He hopes he’s not in the tavern getting drunk. He then follows this thought with “(Jester) wasn’t much of a drinker, except when he was taking solace.” Umm, not the reassurance you think it is.
He finds Jester in the stables and psychoanalyses him, before filling him in further on Magnus’ schemes.
There’s more about how Magnus plans for Gunther to be married to Lavinia in his bid to take over control of the kingdom, and how Gunther plans to prevent it.
When Jester points out that Magnus will be executed for treason, Gunther has no issue with that, and in fact lists several benefits, including avenging his late mother. Has Gunther learned of his mother’s death, or just assumed it is so? We’ll probably never be told.
They talk about Lavinia, and Gunther points out that he’s not responsible for any confused feelings she may have, but he will have saved her from a twisted and loveless marriage to himself in which she will be used as a pawn for Magnus to control her kingdom. But you know, this makes Gunther heartless in Jester’s opinion. Because of course.
And now the conversation turns to Robert. Jester asks if he is one of Lavinia’s potential suitors (?!?!) Gunther says the man with the “pigtails and brooding eyes” is “far more handsome” than any of the portraits. Good grief. He asks Jester what he knows, and then pretends he and Jester are talking about something else when he hears Theodore approaching.
Theodore tells him to go babysit the drunk guests in the cellar. At this stage that’s Haroldus, right? Who else? Ivon will be there too, and Gunther is to let him do the drinking, while Gunther does the watching. It seems Theodore isn’t worried about what Gunther might hear. Interesting.
Theodore then asks Jester for his “wise council” and all three depart.
Lavinia’s presence in the hayloft is then revealed to the reader, where she has overheard everything and her world is losing all of its colour, apparently.
End chapter.
Overall impressions:
Theodore’s story/explanation/justification was a total stretch from start to finish, and doesn’t paint him or his motivations for anything in a very flattering light.
Gunther has a solution to Magnus’ frankly vile schemes which will save the Kingdom and Lavinia, and Jester’s first concern is for Magnus’ wellbeing??
How does Magnus’ plan make sense anyway, has he forgotten that Cuthbert is first in line to the throne and Gunther won’t become king by marrying Lavinia? Or is regicide also on his to-do list?
What wise counsel is Theodore seeking from Jester? For everyone’s sake I hope he’s not giving him any information about Jane.
Time passed since start of novel: day two, the never ending afternoon
Number of quotation mark abuses in this chapter: too many to count

it's not the same as it was
darkiplier x captain!reader, set pre-ISWM2
same snake, different skin.
The words echoed around your mind, like a memory you can't quite place. You couldn't remember who said it to you, or even when or where it had been said to you. You're not even sure why it's come back to you now, but watching as Mark argues with Celci for the third time today, it's there at the forefront of your mind. It makes you pause for a second, as you try to remember why someone called Mark a snake but the words seem to fade away as the argument worsens, forcing you to step in, and all you're left with is the nagging sense that you've forgotten something (or someone) important.
The next time you remember those words is when there's a borderline catastrophic problem with the ship. Gunther brings up the possibility of sabotage and it occurs to you (and potentially everyone else) that the only people with that level of clearance are yourself and Mark. The fact it returns surprises you, you've never doubted your head engineer before. You've never had reason to.
You're not sure if he can tell that somethings different, if he does he doesn't let on which you're thankful for. The last thing you need when the ship's announcing it's going to explode is to have an argument with the one person who can fix said ship. When it turns out that the computer just needed a system update and that's what was causing things to go haywire, you feel awful for doubting Mark but there's a small part of your brain that reminds you that the doubt must be there for a reason. Something must've happened to make you doubt Mark, if only you could place what it was.
It's only when you jump into a literal wormhole to try and save your crew and the colonists that the sentence suddenly starts to make sense, like a door has suddenly opened in your mind. You land in an area of perpetual darkness, the only thing visible is a desk about a foot in front of you.
"Do you ever tire of being paraded around like a trophy?" The question seems to come from the void, possibly behind you, but upon turning there's nothing but darkness. It's only when you turn back to the desk that you see him. He looks like Mark, but you immediately know this isn't your head engineer. There's something off about this doppelganger, something about being near to him that instantly puts you on edge. He's sat at a chair that wasn't there a second ago, and if you try and focus on him, he seems to flicker like some kind of projection on the blink. "Though of course you don't remember the last few times he's done this, do you?"
You want to ask him a hundred questions: who is he, where are you, what the fuck is going on, but for some reason your voice fails you. Panic slowly begins to sink in as one question rises to the surface of your frantic mind: did I die?
"I wouldn't worry too much about that. Death doesn't seem to be a permanent state for you, or for him for that matter. Death's never stopped him before and I doubt it would now." You're still trying to find your voice, to question what's going on but it feels like someone's stolen all the air from your lungs. It hurts in the same way that jumping into that wormhole hurt and part of you is waiting to open your eyes and find yourself in your cryotube again but another part of you knows you're not going anywhere until this...person has finished with you. It doesn't even occur to you that you didn't ask him if you'd died. Not out loud anyway.
"We don't have much time to catch up I'm afraid. That snake doesn't like not having you in his grasp, I'm sure he's already trying to work out where you've gone so he can rope you into his next great adventure. But whilst it's just the two of us here, let's enjoy the moment shall we? All your choices and it's led you back to me once more. I always did tell you that life is ours to choose, but I never really thought you took the sentiment to heart." It's only at this that your mind suddenly clears. Something about those words makes you snap out of your panic, though it takes a moment to work out why, to work out why you know those words. The fog suddenly lifts from your mind and when you look up, it's like you're looking at a whole new person. Instead of only seeing a twisted version of your head engineer, it's the face of an old friend that meets your eyes.
"D-damien?" Your voice is hoarse, but you suppose that not being able to speak for all that time will do that to your vocal chords. When you speak his name (is that still his name?), it's the first time you see a real emotion pass over his face, even if it only lasts a moment.
"Hello old friend. Let's catch up, shall we?"

Partners Reunited
ISWM Spoilers//
A/N: I finished the “Frozen Route” that involves Illinois finding us and then leaving us in the cryo pod and I’m like MAN why cant we go with him???
So I wanted to expand on the possibility of him recognizing us from Heist.
Soooo yeah! Enjoy! I miss writing this dude and I’m glad he’s back
...................
‘Maybe Celci’s right..maybe it’s meant to end this way.’
It’s ironic.
You’ve broken out of your cryo pod over and over again. God only knows how many times you’ve ended up back in it and immediately charged out to fix your mistakes or approach a problem differently.
Yet..this time you willingly crawled back into one, content with your choice.
The warp device in your palm was still frozen, utterly useless now. No matter how much you clicked, it was officially broken; the crystal lost its glow, having turned a bleak blue color.
There’s no use in trying it anymore.
After you ended up on this path, you’ve come to realize the grim reality of your situation: no matter what choice you made, who you tried to save, or what you did differently....you’re only led back to one of two things:
A light or a warp.
Even finding a planet to colonize wasn’t satisfying enough--despite that being the whole goal of this trip.
There was always something missing, and whenever you thought you found it....something else happens and you wind up reliving familiar situations.
This was the only unfamiliar situation: Gunther turning the drones on you, Burt merging with the Computer, and Celci controlling everything cryo-related.
She’s the one who insisted you went to sleep like the others, promising to take care of things.
That was a nice idea..just sleeping. You wouldn’t have to worry about anything anymore. No destructive wormholes, time-travel, or armored aliens to deal with.
You could finally get the rest a captain deserves.
In the back of your mind, you thought of Mark. You had no idea if he was dead or merged with some aspect of the ship in this timeline, but you were far too tired to search any further.
This was the best possible “ending” you’ll get. A way to stop these loops permanently.
It certainly wasn’t the first time your choices ended up screwing with the universe. But you’ll be sure this was the last. Everybody was suffering, even those innocent colonists who dreamed of that planet you vowed to reach.
Your only regret is not fulfilling that promise.
That weighed heavy on your heart as you entered the pod for the final time. The moment the door closed and locked itself, frost began coating your vision, blinding you in a blanket of white.
You’re uncertain what will happen now. Will you finally rest or just be thrown back into a loop?
Somehow..you had doubts. Celci was confident in her words. You trusted her, but couldn’t trust yourself to keep your own crew safe.
Perhaps this was for the best.
Slowly you lost consciousness, letting the cold lull you into deep sleep. In a way this was quite comforting. There wasn’t any noise.
No blaring alarms or Mark’s screaming or anything chaotic.
Just silence.
Blissful silence.
.
.
.
.
.
.
.
.
.
.
The silence was soon shattered by the sound of something hammering on the pod door.
It startled you awake only slightly. You had no clue how much time had passed. ‘Is it a rescue team? Or aliens trying to snag our tech?’
As you brushed the frost from your vision, you saw the door open with a loud hiss. Once you could clearly see what’s in front of you, you recognized the mysterious person and became shocked.
You thought you were still dreaming.
That hat....and that adventurous attire...it was him.
“Ah, a mummy!” He exclaimed, not sounding scared at all as he gazed up at you.
Your voice strained to say something, but no sound comes out at first. ‘Shit..must have been in here for a long time if I can’t even talk.’ This was going to be quite annoying if he didn’t recognize you.
So you tried reaching a hand out to him. Though he quickly (yet politely) pushes your hand down, under the assumption you’re some undead alien creature. “Sorry, friend. I don’t have time for your ancient curses.” He remarks, cool as the ice coating the entire ship. “Doesn’t matter how handsome and-or beautiful you used to be.”
Of course, he was flirty as ever. He hasn’t changed a bit.
But when he moves to close the pod, you start to panic and find the strength to lean your full weight against the door.
You changed your mind.
You wanted to live your life, not be stuck in some icy tomb forever.
There were no resets this time around, so...you had a chance to change. To put all of this behind you and start fresh.
He wasn’t Mark, but he was someone you considered a friend. And a friend is all you needed right now.
Illinois was surprised, staring at you with great confusion...and slight irritation at your stubbornness. “Hey now, I know I look like a fresh piece of meat. But I’d rather not get chased by zombies again-"
“I-Illy..”
He blinked. ‘Since when did zombies talk? And how did they know my name?’
Nobody ever called him that, except for...
“Wait..partner? I-Is that you?”
Nodding, you tore off your goggles and mask--both of which were almost stuck to your skin and made you wince slightly afterwards. You dropped them and looked at him, allowing him to see you weren’t some rotting corpse.
“I-In the living flesh.” You rasped with a weak smile.
He almost couldn’t believe it. His own smile grew as he laughed and helped you out of the pod. “Wow..I’ve been terribly mistaken. Y’know I was thinking about you after our adventure. I wondered where you went..and lo and behold, I find you in this abandoned spaceship exploring the final frontier.”
His words made your face grow warm, making the freezing air a little more bearable.
“I’m glad to see you again...but..aren’t you cold?” You tilted your head as you hugged yourself, still feeling chilly.
Looking down at himself, then all around him, and finally back to you..he only shrugged. “Nah. I’ve dealt with worse. I’d ask how you’ve been lately but..that seems redundant.”
“Don’t ask, don’t tell. I’ve made some...bad decisions and this is what happened.” You gestured to everything around you.
“Now, now I’m sure you didn’t mean it. You made some smart choices on our last adventure.” He reassured you. “I’m willing to bet you made the best ones possible given the circumstances...whatever those might’ve been here. I don’t know the full story.”
“I’d rather not say.”
“Fair enough. Well..seems like space travel’s not all it’s cracked up to be." Putting his hands on his hips, he smiled warmly. "Let’s get you outta this frozen wasteland and catch up. Maybe go on a calmer adventure. Whatdya say, partner?”
You couldn’t say no to that invitation.
So you smiled and brushed the snow from your gloves, ready to restart your life. Maybe this was the universe’s way of saying you had a shot at redemption.
No do-overs. Just a second chance.
“Yeah, I’d like that. And you’re right. Space travel’s overrated anyways.”

FAQ
Welcome to the Modern Time Adventure AU! It’s basically an interpretation of what Adventure Time might be like if it took place nowadays. Before getting into it you may want to check out this FAQ to figure out some basics of the AU. Enjoy!
Spoilers?
Yes yep yeah I've included events and characters that appear in both the original show, distant lands, and a teensy bit from the comics, so if you're looking for something spoiler free, this isn't it.
Plot?
As far as I'm concerned, there isn't really one. Mostly it's everyone being stupid and having fun but I hope to also included some sideplots based off the original show plots, such as certain relationships, events or scenarios happening.
What's different?
Honestly, I think the biggest thing that's changed is the timeline. It's my AU so I decided I can do whatever I want, so the occurrence of the events slightly different .. but other than that there are some small changes with character specifics that aren't really worth mentioning in detail here.
Does Finn lose his arm in this AU?
Short answer, yes. Long answer, I do feel it's important to Finn's character and arc that he loses his arm, however the basis of the AU is the gang having fun and I didn't want to make it too angsty. Also, Finn is only 15 here and the current thought is that he won't lose his arm until he's older, around age 17 like in the show.
About me:
Hiya my main is @mispelled and Adventure Time has become really special and close to my heart recently, I know I'm late and the fandom is pretty much dead but. I don't really care, I'm gonna have fun anyway :)

Punchy and Lolly run a collective home where they care for foster children. Some of the residents of the home include Pep, Earl and Hope Lemongrab, Bonnie and (formerly) Marceline. The Gumbalds also own a small candy store called "Candy Kingdom" where the kids will help out after school.
The Gumbald Foster Home
After Marceline's mother died, Simon, who was a close friend of Marcy's mom, took her in as his own. Marceline lived with Simon and Betty, his fiance, until soon after taking her in, Simon began experiencing a mental breakdown/psychotic episode that lasted a couple months, and is still recovering. Betty attempted to reunite Marceline and Hunson Abadeer, who wasn't interested in raising his kid. After the attempt ended in disaster, Betty was unable to care for Marcy and longer and she was transferred to the Gumbald Foster Home while Simon was committed to a psychiatric ward. Only when Simon was on the road to recovery and was released from the hospital did Marceline return to living with him and Betty.
The Simon/Marceline relationship
Simon had a mental breakdown/psychotic episode which ultimately resulted in dissociative amnesia. Marceline created an insert oc for him called The Ice King to try and help them both while dealing with the situation. Simon did get professional help but the amnesia remained for quite a while. He now attends an Amnesiac Support Group, which Susan also attends.
The Ice King Incident
Marcy and Bonnie were good friends throughout elementary school and the beginning of middle school, until they started to fall apart because of Bonnie adopting more responsibilities in her life (including helping her brother Neddy, dealing with family dynamics, the foster home, and accepting responsibilities at the candy shop) and as a result, Marcy felt ignored and left out especially because that's when she needed a friend (while going through her own issues with Simon's mental downfall). The two had a big fight and didn't talk for a few years but they're patching up their relationship and aren't dating yet, but both have feelings for each other.
Marceline/Bonnie relationship
Kara and Frieda were good friends as teenagers but after a fight, Kara stalked off and was involved in a car accident, leaving her with amnesia and aphasia. She subsequently ended up in the same ward as Simon and after a whole bunch of shenanigans involving changing her name to Susan, they were able to reconnect several years afterwards. Susan hasn't recovered her memories but has strong feelings of intuition and remembers knowing Frieda from before.

ring tv series ideas!
idk if it’s an omen that most of my posts apparently involve read-more links now
1. found footage comedy where alberich and loge are roommates and fuck shit up
- basically a rheingold prequel
- loge is the one with a camera/camcorder and he also comments on everything
- mime should also be running around somewhere
- bonus points if it features the young gods & giants as side characters
- should be mainly funny but we should also receive an explanation of why alberich is the way he is in rheingold
2. very dark Whatever Happened To Wotan’s Children series
- two parallel storylines that eventually diverge into three: the twins (who are separated pretty quickly) and the valkyries
- only element of lightheartedness: the valkyries when they’re between 3 and 12 because i don’t think they can do their job yet and instead probably bother the shit out of wotan
- but once each one turns 12, she’s sent to the battlefield
- a lot of gaslighting on wotan’s part is involved that ‘this is all a fun adventure! also, your new task for life involves my orders, which you shall never disobey OR ELSE’ when it’s very clear for the viewers that it is not at all what it is
- never mind, there’s one other element of humour: fricka and the valkyries trying to get along. fricka is like a side plot: she occasionally appears because she stalks wotan (she says so herself lol) and she does not like wotan’s daughters, but they kind of grudgingly respect each other.
- whatever happens to the twins is just straight-up terrible
- there should be a lot of ~foreshadowing~
- good casting would be paramount. hollywood’s tendency to cast 27-year olds as 15-year old teenagers does not fly at all here. half the point of this tv series is that everyone is too young for what’s happening and it has to look exactly that way.
- the other point of this tv series is to show how childhood events shape your person. wotan, while one of the worst parents to ever hit the stage, does love his children in some way. except he’s also abusive. and most of his children don’t really realise that, though they’re greatly affected by it. they have reasons to love him and reasons to be afraid of him, and it’s all very complicated and confusing for everyone involved and should reflect the complexities of growing up with an sometimes-abusive, sometimes-neglectful, always-mercurial parent.
3. siegfried-and-mime tragicomedy
- tragicomedy because it’s really fcking funny to see Siegfried The Little Monster Child overpower mime from age 7 but also really tragic.
- would be an interesting way of examining the power (im)balances in a parent-child relationship
- siegfried is relentless in terrorising mime
- and mime resorts to more and more trickery to get this kid to love him. or at least, not fucking kill him
- an interesting opportunity to examine what love is, and where usefulness starts. did mime try to love siegfried initially? how does he think love works? when did mime hatch the plan that the kid needs to fetch him the ring?
- most importantly: did mime go through the same development that alberich did: he can’t get love (parental love in this case), so he’ll take power instead? how lonely was mime in his little isolated life before this monstrous kid showed up?
4. hagen-and-the-gibichungs coming-of-age series
- various people growing up at the court of the gibichungs!
- there’s gunther, growing up in the shadow of his father, but no matter what he does, he can’t seem to match what’s expected of him. everyone seems to know that he’ll be a subpar king one day, and the older he grows, the more this feeling kills him. time to tell a story of failed ambition and skirted responsibilities!
- there’s gutrune, who grows up sheltered from much of it. there’s marriage, and that’s all she can hope for, kind of, so hopefully it’ll be fine. not a very good outlook on life in the first place, so she spends much time with mental and emotional escapism.
- there’s hagen, who tells no one about his misery. his misery is his father, who visits his nightmares from when he’s ten and doesn’t let him sleep.
(- this should be legit creepy and have a horror vibe)
- hagen grows up tired. so, so tired. it makes him cold and angry and dead on the inside. his father is the only one in the whole court who calls him ‘my hero’, even if it’s just to get hagen to like him. essentially a story of a similar vein as Whatever Happened To Wotan’s Children, but with aforementioned creepy horror vibe so it feels like childhood is an active nightmare and not a subtle manipulation that only the audience perceives in full
- should be narrated by either gutrune (who could prove a remarkable amount of observation skill for someone who’s not allowed to do much in life) or hagen (if we want a really depressed narrator, who nonetheless knows more than everyone else)
- they have to be proper friends. i won’t like it if they’re not proper friends :(

what's the game of rassilon thing???
Oh, thank you for giving me permission to invite all of your into my current hyperfixation hole.
The Game of Rassilon is a fan-made actual-play RPG podcast where a bunch of very funny and very creative people play the official Doctor Who roleplaying game. If you've been following me on Twitter recently you may have noticed I've done a fuckton of art for it. That's because it's extremely good! the adventures are well-thought-out, the roleplaying is choice, the goofs are hilarious and the emotional beats hit hard. it feels quite a lot like listening to a canon series of tv doctor who, except it's all improv and dice rolling and rpg.
the first two seasons are typical monster-of-the-week doctor who adventures with a gradually building plot revolving around the Doctor & co running from... someone (or perhaps something), and a Big Plan that even the Doctor isn't sure of the details of, at least at first. there is the Power of Friendship! there are Pokemon battles! there is freestyle jazz scatting, much to the Doctor's exasperation! it's all excellent. i haven't started season 3 yet because of Time Issues on my end, but I have no doubt it's going to be just as good as the first two seasons.
You can listen to it on their website (go to the start of the archive and start from the beginning) or on most podcast apps. The episodes are about 1/1-1/2 hours long each, and there's currently two and a half seasons out (20ish episodes each season, i believe) so it's not quite as intimidating as like. TAZ is. definitely not as scary as CritRole.
also i wrote fic for it. i would link to it here, but it's spoiler-y for all through to the start of season 2. and i am writing more, because i apparently just can't help myself when it comes to One Certain Character.
so yes. go listen to it and then come back and let me know so i know that i've got more people into it. i'm on a roll here. i will drag everyone i know into this very good podcast!
if you're curious about the content and don't mind mild spoilers, then come with me beneath the cut and I will introduce you to the Party, featuring some Fun Art From Me
The Doctor
played by Riley Silverman. eternally delightful force of chaos. 'the most 90s doctor', according to michael, and honestly he's not wrong. canonically trans! in the sense that her player is also trans and said 'if you think she's trans also i'm 100% behind you' and i choose to think she's trans
got stranded in the 90s for a while, which explains why the interior of her TARDIS currently resembles a 90s coffeeshop. gives very good very doctor-y speeches. stubborn. curious.
Travis Killian
played by Dan Peck (who is the sort of RPG player who breaks the game at least once every session. and it's great). worked at a library in New Jersey, 1998, and then Things Happened and now he lives in a time machine. you know how it goes. 'gentle ball of confident anxiety'. Star Wars fan, Pokemon nerd. basically half his character sheet is based around how much he loves his friends. Best Boy!! with a really genuinely excellent character arc.
welcome to the travis killian stan club. i love him very much.
Millie Earhart
yeah, that Amelia Earhart. big strong lady with a wrench who is very good at flying things! planes in particular but she's very adaptable. a bit of a walking paradox, considering she's supposed to, you know, die on a plane trip, but it's fiiiine. it's all fine. trust her! she's amelia earhart!!
Roman
technically an NPC (it's a bit complicated). still a member of the party, in my heart if nowhere else. i will not spoil anything to do with roman because his reveal is just too good to spoil. but please rest assured he's a delight and by s2 you will love him just as much as i do.
Carrie Vu
played by châu kate lê. carrie 'i think time lords should unionize' vu is also a delight who i will similarly not spoil, simply because she doesn't show up until about mid-s2. but i couldn't not mention her. also, she has a softball bat, and is keeping the doctor who tradition of 'tiny women going to town on aliens with blunt objects' alive and well. queen
Gunther
is the doctor's cat. she is a sweetheart and she is perfect and she is also currently my profile picture on most of my social media. we all love Gunther.
in conclusion come join me in the game of rassilon. i need someone to cry over roman with and i need to justify the fact that i've written over 50k of fanfiction from travis's point of view somehow

Lady & Peebles and You Made Me airing back to back (at least on streaming services) is such an interesting pair because they’re both PB-centric episodes that have...opposing viewpoints of her scientific mind, almost. Lady & Peebles shows her reliance on gadgets and ends with her besting someone in hand to hand combat BECAUSE her scientific mind gives her the upper hand, and then You Made Me turns around and goes “your science made this problem, figure it out”. She does, in the end, give Lemongrab a friend, realizing the bitter qualities she instilled in him (as you’ve discussed before with her creating him being an accidental mirror of her own bad traits), which is an emotional answer...but it’s still helped along by science allowing her to create life. And then there’s her outfits for them, which creates a huge visual disparity between the two episodes! A cute pink parka and science long johns for L&P, and then what I can only describe as a 1950s mom look for YMM. There’s a lot happening in both of these episodes for her and I think s4 was when all of these ideas were coalescing into a more concrete, multifaceted character, which is neat to see happen (again. Lol I’ve watched this season too much) Thoughts, O Adventure Time expert and fellow PB Appreciator?
Woop! This is a fun analysis to wake up to!
You’re right, season 4 is when they really took a step up with Peebles.
Adam Muto said that the crew were afraid they were writing the same stories with Finn and Jake all the time. So they changed the status quo up by having Finn find a new love interest, and started working on other characters, even having eps that don’t even feature Finn and Jake at all.
Princess Bubblegum was one of the many beneficiates of this change in focus, and the most immediate. There are a large number of season 4 eps designed to build her character up from Finn’s unrequited love interest into the mad scientist dictator she was always meant to be - “Goliad”, “Princess Cookie”, “Burning Low”, “Lady & Peebles”, “You Made Me”, “Reign of Gunthers”, and finally “The Lich”. And what’s incredible is every single one of these episodes shows a completely different side to her, as visually demonstrated by how she wears different costumes - different “masks” - in each of them. The use of outfits as “masks” would persist with Bubblegum’s character for the rest of the show, including some heavy symbolism in the finale itself and Obsidian.
For example, PB dressed like a mother in You Made Me, and she dressed like a goofy teen in Sky Witch, but in neither episode did she choose those outfits because that was what she knew she was doing. It was all coincidental, in-universe.
...
Through costume design the writers explore different aspects of their characters, and can make them feel like completely different people on an episode-by-episode basis. This really helped the characters translate to the audience.
So you’re right. This is when things started coalescing together. The crew had a fun character to work with who they had neglected for the previous 2 seasons, and damn, they took that bull by the horns straight away. They were also able to write a lot more stories than before, so this was a good time for her.
This would continue in season 5.... but not under Pen Ward - Pen left the show, but he was still working on the videogame about PB’s origin. When Adam Muto took over, he greenlit 3 episode concepts by Jesse Moynihan that were written about Princess Bubblegum - “The Suitor”, “Wizards Only, Fools”, and “The Vault”. He and the writing team also put together “Sky Witch” and gave that to Jmoyns/Acasta too because why not, they were doing a great job.
Anyway it’s at this point you begin to see the writers taking different approaches. Jesse (and Ako) liked to focus on Peebles as an individual. But Tom Herpich wrote episodes that focused on her relationship to others, like her citizens and Lemongrab - this is where Peebles as a “god figure” was mostly written in, especially since Tom wrote “Goliad” way back in season 4 as his first ever story concept that got approved, and he also worked on “You Made Me”. And finally, Cole Sanchez and Andy Ristaino usually worked on the eps that focused more on her darkest decisions as leader - “Rattleballs”, “James”, “The Cooler”, ”Hoots”. (They didn’t conceptualize those eps, they just happened to board them.)
In season 7 everything kind of settled down and rather than having entirely different sides of her personality about in each ep, she was written as a bit more consistent from then on. I mean, Peebles in Bonnie and Neddy>Varmints>Stakes>Broke his Crown>The Thin Yellow Line all still feel like very different sides to her character, but there are consistent elements across all those eps. Those elements relate back to the events of The Cooler and the season 6 finale - being more careful and considerate of others after scaring away her citizens and friends.
But then in season 10 you got some of that wackiness back. Like in “Blenanas”, which could not feel any more different from “Gumbaldia”, despite both eps dealing with the same subject matter of preparing for the war. Then in “come along with me” and “Obsidian” she is literally written by 4 different board teams in each, so all the characters get a shift in how they’re presented in each eighth of the episodes!
