Hii 🐸 everyone is talking/ complaining about noise music being the big trend in kpop rn and I thiiiiink i know what they mean? But I'm not sure I have the right idea of what the style is..? What are some kpop songs that you think are a good example of noise music? I don't mean that the song necessarily is good, just that it shows well what noise music IS... oh and what are your thoughts on the trend and why it became THE thing.. do you like noise music? (Sorry for the unnecessary length of this! Anyway I hope you're doing well 💜)
i miss when nct was indie.
in general, i'd define noise music (according to kpop stans) as anything with a heavy bassline, loud EDM, and harsh grating "unusual" sounds. a lot of noise music is actually based in 90s and 00s hip-hop production, with a mix of hyperpop from the 2010s. you'll notice that a lot of nct's producers and early kpop producers are actually hip-hop producers too. fans want anything that follow a nice abab cdcd rhythm with a predictable chorus, it never feels unpleasant to the ear (good recent examples are bts' dynamite, joy's hello, cherry bullet's lovesosweet, twice's alcohol-free). it's nice to listen to sometimes, but this gets super boring quickly (this music is very 2017 radio friendly) which is why noise music has gotten a lot more popular over the years primarily due to the rise in nct's popularity
some key examples of "noise" music are 127's songs fire truck, kick it, kitchen beat, chain, cherry bomb, punch, wakey wakey, simon says, etc and nct u's boss. you'll notice that the songs never have a traditional chorus, have a heavy bassline, and very grating electronic sounds that actually work well with the production (if you really listen to the song). other examples of noise music would be zimzalabim (hated by everyone on first listen), attaboy (a controversial reve bside that was obviously an f(x) song), 70% of itzy's discography, skz's titles, shinee's dcm, everglows titles (minus la di da). actually a lot of 2nd gen tracks would be considered noise in todays context too (ring ding dong, electric shock, the boys, lucifer, come back home....the list just goes on).
personally, i do like noise music.. after all im an f(x) and nct fan... i only think nct has been able to do noise music well in the later gen, its always been their Brand. sm's production for nct is super well done, while the later groups are just bad rip-offs of nct's sound. the new producers are very repetitive with the melodies and sounds they use, hence everything sounding the same and the trend becoming the new kpop 2010s tropical house obsession. to this day, nct's "noise" production is very original and unusual, i remember in the early days their music stuck out like a sore thumb...everybody overall hated fire truck and cherry bomb (their true indie era...and why the term noise music has always been associated with their sound in the first place). now noise music is what everyone uses to call a song too loud and grating (plus the insult is the lyrics lack meaning...but the question is why does everything have to have meaning?). as a final thought, i always think its strange how much ppl dislike noise music bcuz it becomes very obvious they havent listened to anything outside of white pop radio for the past ten years
