Btw, when it comes to that link, a lot of the things like sleeplessness and declining teen jobs and replacing soda with energy drinks can be attributed to schools putting more and demand on kids, giving them stress upon stress while the world around them (that they have no control over) is falling to shit. As someone who's right on the border between generations, I can confidently say that, while the above notes are... scary accurate, the link has a lot of charts and not a lot of real information. Adults, more often than not, are the real cause of every decline there, fearmongering because they're being fearmongered. Adults are terrified of the rise in personal freedoms and are trying to shut shit down. And it's working. Keeping teens from experiencing things, both good and bad, can lead to mixed results, like both the fall in early addiction and the fall in sexual freedom.

Not only that, but the grandparents and great grandparents raised their kids on dangerous levels of leniency that genuinely ruined a lot of kids' lives. It's a trend in parenting that the pendulum swings between dangerous lenience and toxic possessiveness due to parents remembering everything their own parents did wrong and trying to do the exact opposite. The only thing that's going to fix these kids is a solid middle ground, where they're treated with respect and given the freedom to develop while also making sure they understand real dangers of life that really should never have been a part of anyone's developing years. Maybe don't steal cigs or play with knives, but still adventure outdoors, do things with friends between school and home. Like, there's stuff that'll genuinely ruin you mixed with stuff that'll help you actually live life and it's all being treated with the same level of paranoia from parents. Kids need the freedom to experience it all paired with real guidance.

Unfortunately, that freedom can't be done without restructuring urban society. There used to be less cars speeding through neighborhoods, people who were stay-at-home parents or worked from home could easily keep watch while their kids played outside, you could trust your community to be there for you instead of every household for itself. Today, suburbs separated from businesses separated from schools has turned neighborhood comraderie to paranoia and over-protectiveness. Capitalism has torn trust away from our communities and that's half of what's driving parents to shelter their kids.

here's my hot take about my generation and people younger than me (I'm 22 years old)

The reason current teenagers and people in their really early 20s are conservative on accident and have such shitty takes on the internet is because our generation was much more sheltered than previous generations and because we were raised to be ok with orwellian servailence and that is 100% the fault of our parents, Reagan Era kidnapping panics, and the rise of technology all coming together to prevent us from doing the sketchy shit that sends parents into panic mode but which is also completely fundemental to childhood development. If your parents had even a crumb of money to their name and even a shred of free time they started tracking your phone as soon as it was possible to. I did not experience this because my parents are actively trying to live like it's the 1990s and still have not gotten cell phones of their own, and did not let me have one until I was 18 years old and it was no longer their choice, but literally over half of my friends in middle and high school had their phones tracked by their parents at some point or other, and we would occasionally find this out, not because their parents told them, but when we were trying to do the aforementioned sketchy shit and their parent's car would pull up. And I would, like a reasonable person after finding this out, encourage my friends to just leave their phones at home, and their response would be "What if I get kidnapped" or "My parents are just trying to keep me safe"

This in my estimation has lead to a combination of kids being terminally online because they do have internet access and are better at deleting search history than their parents think they are, but don't have the freedom to go out and do shit without their parents' knowledge or consent, so they have the most privacy from the people who control their lives while they're on the internet, and kids not having the real world experiences they should have, not knowing how to connect with other people irl, not feeling comfortable leaving the house because of the horror story lies their parents told them to make them ok with the surveillance they were inflicting on their kids. Kids these days are growing up in the fucking panopticon when they should be out in the woods playing with knives or stealing cigarettes from their older sibling and going out to an empty parking lot to smoke them or whatever and that shit is sticking with them into adulthood. Things that were "tee hee we could get in trouble isn't this so fun and daring" in the 1990s and 2000s have become in the 2010s and 2020s things that are "If I do that without texting my parents some sort of lie to excuse where my location is my parent's car will pull up and I will get grounded for the next two weeks."

Like even when I was 19 I had a 16 year old friend who would volunteer their time at a food shelf and that's how we knew each other. We would talk about dungeons and dragons together, and the game store was 4 blocks from the food shelf. One day we left the food shelf earlier than they had told their parents they would and they got punished for that. We were literally just going to look at dungeons and dragons miniatures and dice, which was self evident if you could see where we started and how far we walked and where too. I have to assume that this isn't uncommon. It's wrong, but it's not uncommon.

I do ship Solavellan (the angst potential is off the charts. i do not view it as sunshine and rainbows LOL) but I'm probably in the minority where I enjoy characters like Solas and Mythal specifically because they're flawed and tragic af.

I know Mythal isnt perfect and even if her relationship with Solas might be questionable (as he was bound to her service), I do believe their love for each other was genuine (on both sides!) and I do think that Solas showed more devotion to Mythal than he ever did to Lavellan WHICH I CAN EXPLAIN.

IMO, Solas' feelings for Lavellan is genuine but he couldn't show Lavellan the degree of love he showed Mythal because he held so much of himself back during his relationship with Lavellan.

And I think Solas knew that. He has his mission and he will NOT give Lavellan the truth of who he truly is until he can no longer keep it a secret (and even then he didn't tell her everything). He literally cannot devote himself fully into their relationship because there's a major part of himself he's withholding from her.

Like- You cant really build a loving healthy relationship on lies, obscured truths, and ginormous secrets especially when the omitted information is crucial to Lavellans life.

Solavellan and Sothal are both tragic and pretty toxic relationships (which makes it fun to read about!).

One could say Mythal was toxic for Solas because of him being bound to her service (even if Solas agreed to it).

But one can ALSO say that Solas was toxic for Lavellan because he had the upperhand throughout the entirety of their relationship (even if she chose to be with him).

they might all be consenting adults here but the power imbalance is still very much there.

Btw I'm definitely seeing parallels between Solavellan and Sothal. It seems Solas' tragic love life has this pattern of: choosing to leave shit unsaid, betrayals, and being on opposing sides with his loved ones etc etc.

So anyway in my DA run with Lavellan Solas is dying alone. Don't worry he has spirit friends he'll be fine hahah

what destroys me about them most is the fact they never got to make it right between them, and though they felt betrayed by each other for different reasons they were still deeply in love with each other and it eats at me to think about maybe if she wasn’t murdered, eventually they could have reconciled. i just think a lot of solavellans (and i say this as one myself) don’t like the fact solas and mythal’s connection runs so deep, and you guys might kill me for saying this but i hope you can remain civil and respectful, but solas loved mythal much more than he loves lavellan. to me solas and mythal seem to be star-crossed soulmates that fate was extremely unkind to. though solas loves lavellan their relationship could never hold up to the weight of the millennia between solas and mythal. also keep in mind the solavellan romance was added at the last minute and was never supposed to exist, and while it’s beautiful it is only “canon” in one world state. i don’t agree with my fellow solavellans who act like it’s the canon when there are seven other dai romances. mythal and solas were in love in the actual canon of the dragon age universe and that is a hard pill to swallow for many people. as people who claim to be tragic romance enjoyers you should be eating this up because solavellan is sunshine and rainbows compared to the gut wrenching tragedy of solas x mythal
