I'm remembering now that one of the reasons why the Isis Trilogy (or at least book 1) had such an impact on me as a teen was that it's one of the few YA books I've read where the male love interest acts like a complete asshole and the main character is just like "okay then, bye."

#powerful message to have an 'ugly' MC who's genetically altered to suit the extreme environment she lives in #and have her parental figure constantly tell her shes beautiful and all her 'ugly' features have a very important purpose #and then end the story w her like 'i don't want to be around soft pink humans anyway im going to go live in the Most extreme environment!'#yas queen you do you. fuck mike hes a douche #this book has its faults ie. the ridiculous instalove between olwen and mark but it does have a very good message #thinking about reading
