Behold! A chameleon!
#op#medieval art#this is from a bestiary from around 1226-1250#from what i can tell the image comes before the description and the description starts on the next page#the first line of which reads essentially 'chameleons don't have one colour' so i can only guess it's a chameleon#i can't really understand the rest of the paragraph alas. only other thing i can understand is camelo est similis and the word ethiopia#i'm guessing camelo est similis means camels are similar? but shrugs. there's two words before it but i can't quite make it out#capite tainem? tamen? tainen? i don't know nearly enough latin for this#can't wait till i can read more bc it's so interesting to see what they know of such animals compared to what we know#this book also has a number of winged serphents and also sirens#fascinating stuff
